hello. Our second issue is finally here! After the amazing welcome following our launch, with so many copies of Gather finding their way into your hands so quickly, we were beyond excited to bring you this second issue. Settling in to our style and rhythm, knowing that we had so many things planned; interviews, photo-shoots and more, it was hard to keep it to ourselves. In this issue, I am proud to introduce you to the people that really inspire me. Those who have crafted a career from making things beautiful, such as accomplished stylist, Amber Armitage, who has used the Managwhai coast as her own muse. Adrian Daniel, who has used his passion for sneakers and photography to design his own career which suits his lifestyle. I had the best time spending the day with Merijen Oliver of My Little Flower Company, listening to her talk about her passion for what she does, all surrounded by beautiful flowers, where nearly all her customers are happy and celebrating. Our feature shoot was so much fun to produce, working alongside incredible talent, creating four uniquely stylish and inspiring spaces.

“Gather is all about inspiring, and we are so thankful with how much we have connected with, and inspired, our readers with our first issue.”

The life and stylings of amber armitage

Words by Kirsty Millar + Photography by Jessica Whiting

Gather caught up with Amber Armitage from a beautiful spot in Mangawhai to chat all things style and function. This special corner of the world is a second home for Amber. She blisses out her family’s bach, which shoulders the surf beach. It was from this setting that our chats traversed Christchurch, Auckland, London, and Mangawhai too. But first an introduction. Amber is a successful art director and stylist, content creator and print maker. Spreading her magic in visual storytelling, Amber works on a variety of projects from commercial, residential, editorial and food styling assignments, covering a wide range of industries and brands. Recently she collaborated with NZ’s coveted handbag brand, Saben, on their campaign imagery. She is also the author of limited-edition photographic prints, foraged from travels abroad - including a hand-picked selection of Mangawhai seascapes. Armed with a Bachelor in Design, Amber swooped at a chance to join popular lifestyle glossy, Homestyle Magazine as a graphic designer. Joining just a couple of issues after launching meant Amber was part of the close-knit team that helped shape the magazine into the lifestyle publication that it is today. The mighty OE soon called and Amber travelled to London. After two and half years of pausing from the design industry to nanny and roam, Amber then returned to Christchurch. Homestyle Magazine shoulder tapped her again, and she found herself covering a friend’s maternity leave.

“for me, it’s not appearances, it’s more about the function and feeling it generates”

Towards the end of this period, on 22 February 2011, the earthquake that shaped our country’s heritage also tattooed a mark on Amber. She witnessed first-hand the power of humanity, rallying together and abandoning things that no longer mattered. “It sounds flippant to talk about it, but it’s a profound event. It was amazing to see such humanity. Despite a time of zero rules, people cared and took time to check on a neighbour. I actually feel privileged to have gone through it. All the crap we worry about, when it’s stripped back it just becomes about the people we love.” For two days straight a small group of Amber’s colleagues and friends were holed up and glued to the telly for news. They didn’t know what was going on and sat waiting for information on people’s welfare and whereabouts.

Why did we side-step into this topic? Amber reveals, “I deal with products or styling ‘things’ which could be viewed as materialistic, but that couldn’t be further from the truth for me. The spaces we create affect the way we interact within that space and play a big part in how we feel - adding up to an enormous impact on people’s lives.” Big events like this strip people back to basics and serve as a reminder that all styling projects have a deeper responsibility than simply ‘what they should look like’. “For me, it’s not appearances, it’s more about the function and feeling it generates. If I work on residential homes I’ll always be clear on what’s required from a space - how people want to move in it and communicate within it. Starting from an understanding of the required function, I’ll then move onto how it should look. I like people to live in a space before changing things, then it’s known where the best light is found, or where people love to gather and chat.” Despite the earthquake chaos, the next issue of Homestyle was tucked away, even hitting the printers on deadline. Soon after, the business moved to Auckland along with Amber who continued a few more years with the publication. In August 2015, after simmering away on ideas, she decided it was time to go it alone. “A period of consistency and stability in my life had been great, but that’s not necessarily 4

Nowadays, Amber works from an office on K’Road in Auckland, sharing the beautifully renovated space with girl boss friends Material Creative and Hannah Design studio. “It’s so great to be able to talk through ideas and business decisions with people who you really respect both as creatives and in business.” “My other challenge is working out what areas of styling to focus on, residential assignments, editorial styling, real space fit-outs, homeware products, ceramics, art prints. I love them all but it is quite a juggle. Do I niche it down or just roll with it all? I’m yet to decide!”

From Christchurch, Auckland and a few global corners in between, Amber cherishes time at Mangawhai with her family. Early business days unfolded from the table of her Auckland home, so a coastal escape would always be welcomed. Solo walks in nature are her idea-generators, and the famed cliff top walk in Mangawhai is a place where Auckland’s busyness can be forgotten. Meeting up with Amber was an irresistible chance to showcase her love affair with Mangawhai, matched by her styling prowess. Inspired by Mangawhai seascapes from her art print range, Amber has put together four room reveals. Pops of local product and homewares are found throughout the pages, matched by dreamy colours. My wife & kicks How Adrian Daniel turned a passion into a career. Words + Photography by Dalong Ye-Lee

Adrian Daniel is a youth pastor, freelance photographer, sneaker enthusiast and father of three hailing from Whangarei. Adrian inspires youth lives daily in work for his local church and is an incredibly talented content creator, collaborating on projects with international brands and making his name in the sneaker community as the creator of, My Wife and Kicks, a dedicated sneaker blog. Adrian sat down with Gather writer, Dalong Ye-Lee, a fellow sneaker enthusiast to chat about his work and how he started... BACKGROUND + WORK

You’ve established yourself out there as the mastermind behind My Wife and Kicks and for your role at church in youth work. Tell us more about yourself and your journey leading to today. I was born in Cape Town, South Africa and grew up living there for 15 years until my family decided to move to New Zealand. I settled in quite quickly and lived a pretty normal teenage life in east Auckland. After finishing high school I studied a BCom at The University of Auckland and loved it, and during my time at uni I was involved with a local youth group though a friend.

About six and a half years ago I was asked to move up to Whangarei for a position in leading the youth team up here. On a week to week basis my role involves leading and mentoring young people, preaching, MCing and running social media for the Church. It’s a pretty varied role and I really enjoy what I do! FA S H I O N A N D S N E A K E R S

So through all of your travels, education and work life where does fashion and your passion for sneakers take its place for you in the big picture? I guess I’ve always had an interest when it came to fashion. I remember I was about eight or nine in primary school and after school one day my dad came home with a pair of Levi’s Jeans and a Stussy T shirt for me. I was like, these- are the BEST pair of jeans I’ve ever had. From that moment on, I refused to wear anything else but Levi’s, I sorta had this little collection of Levi’s Jeans through primary school which was kinda crazy!

Skateboarding was always a part of my life and it was a culture I found myself immersed in. With that came skate shoes and various other interests in skating. It all started with chunky Globe I never grew up as a Christian nor and Etnies skate shoes, I remember went to Church, but I always believed having the Chet Thomas Pro-models there was a God that existed. The and some éS Kostons as well. One day atmosphere and involvement in the I was looking for a new pair of skate youth group really connected with me shoes and stumbled across a pair at a and it was through this experience that local skate store; Chad Muska’s third I really met God for myself, seeing him pro-model Supra Skytops in a black nu change and transform my life. Over buck. I googled them, looking for more time I saw my priorities, what I valued pictures and found them on the cover and what I wanted to do with my life of a magazine called Sneaker Freaker. slowly changing. I had witnessed my I discovered their website and forums life being impacted significantly as and was intrigued- even buying a copy a young person, and I wanted to see of their magazine! When I received other young people’s lives change in the the magazine I was blown away to same way. As I got stuck in serving at a see a price guide at the back of shoes Church and Youth Group, this passion selling for more than retail price.. and grew into a part time job and it was it blew my mind that there was this here I felt I had found my calling. whole community of people who were passionate about sneakers!

I began looking for some of the old releases, collaborations and pairs I was seeing in the magazine. I found the inspiration and stories behind Nike Skateboarding kicks fascinating and began hunting for them, finding Nike SB Space Jams sitting on sale at Cheapskates (Auckland). I guess here is where my hunt for sneakers and the entry into the sneaker game began. I then discovered a community of different people called NZ Sneakerheads (now Sole Central NZ). I’d seen the New Balance ‘N’ on the sides of shoes not really knowing what it was. I eventually discovered New balance through the Jeff Staple x NB White Pigeon collaboration. From there my love for New Balance began, I appreciated what the brand was about, being confident in who it is in making excellent shoes, rather than trying to be something it is not or following the hype. They still make shoes in England and USA, making the best shoes they can regardless of price, often more low key and understated. This is where I am now, with most of my interest in NB. PHOTOGRAPHY AND TURNING POINT IN SNEAKERS

It’s incredible to see how a passion for something can be sparked by such a seemingly minor happening! Where did your love for photography come from and how did this tie in with sneakers? Over time I had seen some great pictures out there of sneakers. At one point my wife had just received a Canon 550D for her birthday so I had decided to pick the camera up and have a go, teaching myself how to use it. I got into Instagram as it was pretty fresh back then and created a blog as a place to post high quality photos. One day I was in the lounge and “My Wife and Kids” was on TV in the background and I thought hey, I’ll call the blog “My Wife and Kicks!”. I initially thought the name was real corny and that I’d change it at some point, but it stuck! 9

I was at an event at a skate store called Co-Lab in Britomart, Auckland. I was heavily into NB at that point and ended up in a conversation with Phillip Bell (DJ Sir-Vere). He was surprised to have met somebody as passionate about NB, which was rare then. Phil passed me onto Kevin, a sales rep at NB and we started to connect via email. This was the turning point in sneakers for me. Over time Kevin invited me to events, I was able to meet people at NB and got collaborating with events such as Pac Heat where I’d had my own collection on display. CURRENT LIFE

Having moved to Whangarei from Auckland, what changes did you experience in the move and what comparisons can you draw between the difference in your lifestyle?

online and creating relationships down in Auckland getting people to assist with releases or travelling down where I could, such as at Qubic Store. The culture up in Whangarei is a lot more slow paced, and people are more interested in beaches and outdoor activities which really appeals to me. Living up here is cool because I love skateboarding and surfing. The cost of living is also way cheaper than in Auckland so it’s a bit of a bonus when raising a family. You seem like a man of many talents, what would be your best advice for being able to juggle all of your hobbies and interests alongside family? It’s exactly that, [laughs] it’s always a juggle! I have a wife, two kids, and another on the way, a full time job, my work with My Wife and Kicks and social media. I always try to be fully present in all that I do, whether it be family or connecting with people and through work and photography.

Obviously Whangarei is much smaller than Auckland, with roughly 90,000 people in the wider region so the retail experience is definitely different. You don’t get any boutiques or local sneaker It’s a matter of identifying what needs attention and when, never at the releases up here so being a part of the expense of my family or my priorities. sneaker community involves shopping

It’s being okay to pull back when needed and push forward when you have the capacity to. BONUS SNEAKER QUESTION

Which sneaker silhouettes are your favourites of all time, and which sneakers so do particularly take a lot of interest in? I love the simplicity in design of 80s era sneakers. I like the aesthetic which is simple and understated, especially runners in grey. I feel 90s sneakers got a bit crazier in design and colours which I’m not really a fan of. The NB 1300 is my favourite, a stand out pair, they have been manufactured in several places including the USA, UK, Korea and even Ireland. The NB 1500 is another favourite, mainly the pairs made in USA and England; These shoes have quite a bit of history behind them. I love the NB 99X series, such as the NB 991 and NB 990 and other models following. I really have an appreciation for the Nike Air Max One among other models. In general 80s runner are what I do. 

the contemporary ceramics of Simone Baker

Words by Holly Brooker + Photography by Jessica Whiting

Handmade arts and crafts are firmly back in vogue and thankfully, for the less talented amongst us, skilled creatives and artisans are filling the gap. Mainstream shoppers can enjoy the beauty of individualised handmade goods over mass-produced factory-made products.

Business development hasn’t come naturally, she explains, it’s been more of a trial and error approach. “I’ve had to learn as I go and it can be incredibly rewarding at times, and at other times you get a quick reality check. I often have entrepreneurial ideas, but having the time and resources to execute them is a challenge at this stage in my life.” For now, One such entrepreneur is local artisan Simone Baker, who has made a business (and a good name for herself) through Simone is focussing on what she loves and can realistically achieve, but the ideas are there simmering. To speed up the her talent in pottery. It was the bold move from Auckland to Te Arai three years ago which led the skilled artisan to launch manufacturing process, Simone is working on changing her pottery range, Cemetery Road Collection. It’s really special to see one of her suppliers is a local nine-year-old student from them blossom at different times of the year.” Mangawhai Beach School, who loves growing plants! But moving into their new home certainly wasn’t all roses and tree blossoms. Swapping city for country, during the middle of a house build that wasn’t going quite as planned, with two energetic preschoolers, Simone found a way to ease the pressure. “My pottery became an amazing creative outlet for me, giving me time out to be at one with nature.” Thankfully the home is now finished and the family couldn’t be happier with their country abode. “Surrounded by native bush, it’s truly spectacular even on days when it’s pouring with rain. We are still working on ‘mastering’ the lifestyle change here, but most boxes are ticked and we are dedicated to making it work. We love the benefits a rural upbringing brings for our boys. The community here is amazing, I have met so many like-minded people. And of course, we love our local Te Arai beaches”. Admittedly, the launch of the business itself was born more out of necessity. “While moving to Mangawhai was an exciting lifestyle idea, we left behind professional careers and hadn’t fully considered our career options.” It made sense to start selling her ceramic creations and earn an income.

Throughout the design process of her ceramics, Simone reflects on what she would like in her own home and on what will work to compliment her love for plants. “I’m really inspired by mid-century modern interiors, the contrast of black and white and the softness of earthy colours and layered textures and this plays into my work. And I love plant life”. With a background in fashion textiles spanning a decade, supplying top designers such as Karen Walker, Trelise Cooper and Kate Sylvester, Simone’s love for beautiful natural textures plays into her ceramic creations and constantly inspires her to expand her offerings. Currently, Cemetery Road Collection is sold at markets, including the local Mangawhai Village Market, and there are plans in the pipeline this year to launch a new website for online sales. Are the pieces perfect? Absolutely not and proudly so. Simone admits, “My pieces are very handmade, and I make no excuses for wonkiness and imperfections — it’s a reflection of life and our humanity, and I love that!”  13

Mangawhai based Florist, Merijen Oliver, is a gem. One of the warmest people I’ve had the pleasure of spending a day with. From the moment you meet her, she just exudes kindness, it radiates from her face and you can’t help but smile. It’s no wonder that she runs such a successful business, a business that pivots around happiness and joy. My Little Flower Company began in April 2014, being a Florist was never previously on Merijen’s radar of career options. It was while she was on a camping trip with some close friends, having a casual conversation around wanting a new challenge in her life, that the idea of a boutique floral company came about. “I just thought, why not?” she says “I love to be creative! I did a bit of googling to see what was around locally, and there wasn’t much, nothing like what I was wanting to do, so I began getting excited”. She attended some training to learn the basics and gain technical knowledge, and has since developed her own contemporary and modern

“I’m a bit of a perfectionist, I wouldn’t want anyone to have a bouquet that I wasn’t 100% happy with receiving myself” style. “I love the creativity involved, I’m a bit of a perfectionist, I wouldn’t want anyone to have a bouquet that I wasn’t 100% happy with receiving myself. I’ll keep arranging and editing until I think it’s good enough”. It’s that kind of love that her customers can see and why they keep coming back “some of my regulars feel like good friends now!”. The care and attention is easy to see as we visit the flower auctions, Merijen carefully selects and goes over each of the flowers she is bringing back to Mangawhai, moving through the trolleys of blooms “I love to keep an eye out for something a little different, something a little unexpected, you know?” she says as she is picking out her choices, holding them gently in the crook of her arm. Every flower you see in her arrangements has been picked out this way, packed carefully and brought back north. Her favourites? “A little classic, but I do love dahlias, peonies and roses” she says “I especially love delicate wildflowers, like cornflowers”. Each week for Merijen is different, but she loves the days she comes down to the auctions the most. It’s a chance for her to reconnect with her suppliers, visit friends and family in Auckland, before returning home to Mangawhai and filling her retail space within Bennetts Café with colour, happiness and joy.  16

Jarrod mcgregor Meet the Head Chef leading Rothko at Sculptureum

Words by Kirsty Millar + Photography by Jessica Whiting

As Head Chef at Rothko restaurant within The Sculptureum Park in Matakana, Jarrod McGregor brings an undeniable passion for food and creativity to the table. It all began as a teenager turning his back on school. Jarrod had the nod from his parents on one condition, “I couldn’t drop out unless I had something to move forward with. I saw an ad in the paper for a chefs apprenticeship scheme. After a successful interview, I signed up and started my degree at a bar in Auckland’s viaduct harbour.” He says. The central Auckland setting was Acquiring a chef’s a fantastic grooming ground for Jarrod where on any given day hat within a record- the team would serve up to 800 lunch and dinner. From here, breaking 12 weeks of over Jarrod hopped around a few opening for a popular prominent Auckland restaurants. is particularly proud of the Ponsonby eatery, is He roles he has played in new a particular career restaurant openings. Acquiring a chef’s hat within a record-breaking highlight 12 weeks of opening for a popular Ponsonby eatery is a particular career highlight. To the uninitiated, a chef’s hat is the crème de la crème industry award, assessed against a restaurant’s overall experience — flavour, technique, knowledge, presentation, ambience, and so on. Eventually, all paths led to Rothko, perfect really because Jarrod and his fiancé had recently purchased a home just North of Orewa and the daily city commute was wearing thin. “The restaurant was being built at the time and it was exciting to see the owners’ sheer scale and passion being poured into the project. I run quite a small team, less is best for honesty. We have good mutual respect going on, and I believe you’ve got to have fun. I don’t tend to yell.” The clientele at Rothko is an eclectic mix which makes the job exciting. On any given week there 24

will be locals enjoying the evening dining, family groups on the weekend and international guests during the weekday. Wherever possible, Jarrod supports local produce. Northland lamb is a definite; he’s sourcing yellow belly flounder and other fish from Leigh Fisheries, and Kaipara Bay summer oysters. All of the foraged goods are on the doorstep too. From ingredient sourcing right through to plate, Jarrod stays incredibly close to the process. He believes garnishes are not just that, they must go beyond looking pretty on the plate and play a strong role when it comes to flavour. “I understand the importance of vegan dishes and paleo based cooking and I’ve incorporated a lot of this knowledge into my role at Rothko.” Jarrod’s family are not necessarily within the industry but they have a big appreciation for dining out and good food. His father is a natural in the kitchen, and with a Maori heritage, the family respects in-ground cooking — even dirt baked pork found its way onto Rothko’s menu at one stage. Dishes are changed out seasonally, but Jarrod’s also a dab-hand at pickling and fermenting goodies — making seasons last longer, with very little waste. Compared to a city lifestyle, he now loves the local beaches and he’s not missing the concrete jungle, nor the constant rush of the city diners, and traffic — ah no, he doesn’t miss that! Rothko sits within The Sculptureum Park and is an inspiring place to work, “When I see how dedicated the owners are to their art offering, I just know we’re a good match. They appreciate my approach, it’s all about classic techniques but pushing the boundaries and being playful with food.” 

Weekend Brunching

Simple recipes to wow your weekend guests. Words, Recipes + Food Styling by Chantelle Cambell, Photography + Shoot Styling by Jessica Whiting

Gather will have you serving Sunday brunch in style, this meal is an absolute show stopper and has something for everyone. This tart looks fabulous, and is suprisingly easy to prepare despite being so impressive. It can be made all year round, simply use seasonal produce making it a very versatile recipe. Try it Chantelle’s way, or mix it up to make it your own. This is most definitely a recipe to have fun with!

Roast Vegetable Tart

Honey Glazed Salmon

INGREDIENTS

INGREDIENTS

1kg mixed roasting vegetables 6 small/medium sized tomatoes 125g haloumi (or feta) 8 free range eggs 4 Tbsp of cream 2 sheets of ready rolled puffed pastry 4 Tbsp of olive oil 1 Tbsp of white balsamic vinegar Salt and pepper to taste

1kg side of fresh salmon 3 tsp of Mangawhai honey 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp smoked paprika 1 clove fresh minced garlic Salt and pepper to taste

METHOD

Pre heat oven to 180°c Peel and chop your vegetables, I like different shapes but try to keep them to a similar size for even cooking. Roll in oil and salt/pepper. Lay over an oven tray. Roast for 20mins until golden. On a seperate tray, lay out tomatos. Roll in oil, balsamic and salt and pepper. Roast for 10 minutes. Line a round 25cm diameter pie tin with pastry, prick with a fork and blind bake* for 20 minutes, remove from oven and take out baking paper and weights. Whisk together eggs and cream, then pour into your pie dish, put back into the oven for 10-15mins or until egg has set.

METHOD

Preheat oven to 180°c Pin bone the side of salmon. Run your finger across the back of the salmon to lift the tiny bones, remove with kitchen tweezers. If your honey is hard, create a bain-marie by adding boiling water to a bowl, place another bowl on top and spoon in honey and whisk. The hot water underneath the bowl will gently soften the honey. Add the other ingredients and wisk together to combine. Place the salmon on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Spoon over half the glaze, ensuring good coverage of your salmon and keeping the remaining half aside.

Cook for 10 minutes. Spoon over the remaining glaze to the salmon cook for a further 10 minutes until done and To assemble your tart, layer up roasted vegetables, tomatoes serve warm. and haloumi and serve warm. Slice haloumi and fry.

COOKING NOTES

For your tart, any vegetables can be roasted and used on top, what ever might be in season, making this an all year round dish. In this instance, I’ve used baby carrots, parsnip, beetroot, red onion, pumpkin and kumara. Try mixing it up — asparagus in Spring, courgette in Summer, mushrooms in Winter. *

Blind bake: to pre cook the pastry lay a piece of baking paper on top of the pastry pour in pasty weights or un cooked rice works just as well.

Chocolate Brown

Honest Chocolat

Bennetts of Mangawhai

This Warkworth store is like walking into Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, the walls are lined with large jars of colourful lollies, it’s as much a feast for your eyes as it is for your taste buds. Chocolate boxes and fudge line the shelves, the ultimate stop for those with a sweet tooth.

This stunning little shop is set in the heart of Matakana. Walking in to this sophisticated, minimalist decor, excites me. Offering an eclectic range, Honest Chocolat source as many organic products as possible to make their tasty morsels.

Set in a French Provincial style building, this is a romantic setting for an exquisite chocolatier.

The Café on-site is open for brunch and lunch — a perfect little road trip stop when you’re heading north. First thing to catch my eye is the large window in the back of the shop, showcasing the chocolaterie in operation.

The hand-crafted water ganache bonbons are bright, rich and decadent, all in beautiful luxury packaging. Honest Chocolat caters to lots of dietary needs such as gluten free, dairy free, soy free, plus all chocolates are free of palm oil.

The chocolate gift boxes at Chocolate Brown are a unique point of difference. Rather than tucking the chocolates away and hiding them, they are on full show through a window on the box lid, allowing you to see all the colours and shapes.

Two of their beautifully packaged chocolate blocks have taken out accolades at the 2017 NZ Chocolate Awards. Gold and Best in Class for their Salted Caramel & Buckwheat, and Silver for their Blueberry & Raspberry. My choice of indulgence at Honest Chocolat is the blueberry and raspberry block.

6 Mill Lane, Warkworth

Matakana Village, 2 Matakana Valley Road, Matakana

When visiting, be sure to try the gluten My favourite pick from their 16 chocolate box is the Butter Caramel, the free and dairy free hot chocolate — delicious! filling is so velvety.

Flawless and pristine, Mangawhai is so lucky to have Bennetts. If you are in the area, this is a must visit. While you are choosing your chocolates, the shop boasts an exclusive range of wines to buy alongside your chocolates. Beautifully boxed packages are on display, or walk along the glass stretch and choose your own, the choices are endless! They make a beautiful gift or a decadent treat for yourself. In the Summer months it can often be too hot for desserts, so a perfect end to a meal for me is a dessert platter with fresh fruit, and a selection of Bennetts chocolates, nougat and marshmallows. When in store I can’t go past the Macadamia Trio. Three macadamia nuts nestled into caramel on a chocolate disc — heaven!

No strangers to building projects, Nic and Sarina own NF Construction, a business they started in 2012 after moving to Mangawhai. Nic project manages while Sarina is the creative director. Since moving to Mangawhai, the couple has, in what most would consider a very short space of time, custom built and lived in three homes before on selling. Initially seeking sea views, Nic and Sarina admit to being captivated by the beauty surrounding their site. “We were struck by the tranquillity and privacy you felt, yet it was still close enough to the main centre and beach. We couldn’t help fall in love with the section.” After gaining consent, the 320 square metre home took four months to build with Sarina and Nic moving in July 2017. A few short months later, baby Arlo (now five months) was born. Situated on 2.4 hectares of land the home boasts five bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, open-plan living-dining-kitchen and a double garage. A selfcontained flat perfect for guests, hosts its own bathroom and kitchenette. The build wasn’t without its complexities. The extensive nature of the cut and fill earthworks to create the building platform along with the home’s high ceiling heights both proved challenging. Inspired by Sarina’s love of Japanese minimalism design, the connectivity to nature is evident throughout their home. Black aluminium floor-toceiling architectural sliders provide unobstructed views. A well-considered approach to allow light to shine through across the polished concrete floors. The large open-plan living-dining-kitchen creates an expansive sense of space and will serve the family as it grows over time. Beautiful Cedar timber features are used both inside on the interior timber panelling and outside to create detail. Minimalism continues through to the kitchen where the focus is on entertainment and open plan living. Monochromatic tones of black overhead cupboards, white drawers and a grey marbled tiled splash back pair with the black Smeg oven. A cleverly designed scullery, now-turned-bar neighbours the kitchen and living space with ease. An open timber shelving and bar fridge are perfect for entertaining. A master wing was initially designed to house the master bedroom, office and a future nursery. With Arlo’s earlier arrival, the space was reconfigured during the building process, and the home office was moved a few rooms down the hallway. Stepping outdoors on to the expansive deck, the exterior of the home is clad in James Hardie Linear weatherboard with Cedar details on the soffits, scribers and pillars. The thoughtful approach to materials and sustainability extends through to the couple’s choice of home decor. “We try to keep things minimal and only buy what we genuinely love,” explains Sarina. “We’re happy to spend more on a handmade or feature item that will be long wearing and is ethically produced. One of our biggest splurges was our couch from King Living. It was important to us with the living-dining-kitchen space being open-plan to create two separate zones.” It’s all about balance though, and Sarina’s not averse to the odd bargain piece from Kmart or Mocka. “It just needs to have a purpose or a place before I purchase it.” Preferring to source locally from New Zealand businesses, market stall finds and local ceramics from Cemetery Road are mixed with favourite New Zealand stores Alex & Corban, Citta and Flux Boutique. Arlo’s room is mostly sourced from New Zealand businesses including Dapper Mr Bear, The Gathered Store, Nature Baby and Burrow & Be. Sarina’s design nous extends far beyond her role with NF Construction. A trained artist, Sarina creates plywood portraits and artworks for her Sarina Khoo brand. With her own studio to work from Sarina explains “Art has always been part of my life. It’s so important to me to be creative for myself.” 35

How would you describe your design aesthetic? Minimal and monochromatic. I like clean lines for creating a calming aesthetic and introduce warmth through timber features and other natural elements and textures. My personal style is drawn from aspects of my favourite designs; Japanese modernism, Industrial design and Scandinavian design. I am a big fan of organisation. Abundant storage and functionality within interiors is a must. Where do you draw inspiration from? I took inspiration from our setting and sought to bring the tranquillity of nature into our home. This included incorporating natural elements in our colour palette and feature timber panelling. Modern Japanese architecture was a key reference point when we designed our home. The use of minimal clean lines, bringing nature indoors and creating a calming zen approach. Pinterest is a great tool for inspiration and one I use for all our build projects. Once I’ve decided on a design brief and aesthetic, I create a new board for each project. It helps me hone my choices and get a feel for the style of each home. What is your favourite part of your home? The open-plan living space, our high ceilings, bathrooms and Arlo’s room. What do you love about living here? We adore the laid-back lifestyle in a small community beach town, not to mention the minimal commute times. Living here we’ve noticed our work-life balance has improved. You can’t go past that rural feel while still being so close to the beach and town, with an abundance of nature, wildlife and sea views. The perfect playground to keep our son Arlo (and Nic) entertained. What’s next for your home? I’m looking forward to finishing off our landscaping; planting fruit trees, adding a veggie garden and creating our dream outdoor entertaining area. 

coastal planting Unexpected specimens to try in your coastal garden

Words by Shannon Poynter + Illustrations by Jana Allen

Here in northern New Zealand we are graced with such a plethora of planting options for our gardens, but we need not be shy about trying something new, or branch out, so to speak! We often get stuck in a cycle of going back to the same tried and tested specimens, but let’s not be basic. Let me share with you some of my favourite plants for particular situations, all which will thrive in our toasty warm climate. MEXICAN ALDER — ALNUS JORULLENSIS

This evergreen beauty has always had my heart. Whether planted as a hedge, shelter, or as a feature, it really pleases the eye and it promises strength. Native to Mexico and Guatemala it easily adapts to heat, rain and dry periods, which is perfect for our moody northern NZ weather. The lightweight branches can handle the wind and the leaves have got the knack of dappling light down to a fine art. It will grow slower in sandy soil, but that’s ok as it can reach a magnificent height of 25m tall. But fear not, as it is happily pruned and can be kept compact, or left to grow and weep majestically, like an Aztec prince with a broken heart. L O M A N D R A ‘ TA N I K A’

This guy is my ‘go to’ and for so many good reasons! You want attractiveness, low maintenance, hardiness and flexibility? Well here it is my friend. I often advise Tanika in replacement of

ornamental flaxes as I believe its lovely free flowing foliage is more modern and pleasing to the eye. Planted en masse they can make quite the show especially in a more minimalist garden. Lomandra ‘Tanika’ is also one of those lucky plants that makes other plants look good, as the bright green foliage is a great backdrop to any other colour. Even if you have a dull one metre sized hole in your established beds, chuck a ‘Tanika’ in there, you won’t regret it! If I could fist bump this plant in appreciation, I would.

HEN & CHICKEN FERN — ASPLENIUM BULBIFERUM

Fun Fact! Many people assume that the Hen and Chicken Fern is named after the small island group that can be seen from my hometown beach of Mangawhai, but this is not so! It is named thus due to the small bulbils or ‘chickens’ that grow on the mother plant or ‘hen’. The ‘chickens’ fall off and plant themselves in the soil around the ‘hen’. What an adorable way to procreate.

This is by far my favourite native fern, and the reason are three-fold. First it’s the ideal plant for a shady spot If you want a plant who knows how in your garden. Its native habitat is to put on a show, look no further! lowland forest and coastal so it can Convolvulus cneorum has grey foliage handle sandy soil but prefers shade with silky hairs that shimmer like to semi shade. Secondly, it looks so silver in the sunshine and has such quintessentially kiwi! The lush green an impressive display of fresh white colouring, the delicate fronds that flowers, they nearly cover the whole uncurl from the centre and the relaxed, plant. I planted three of these on top easy habit. And thirdly, it is a valued of a rock bank and the striking foliage ingredient in traditional Maori cuisine. and startling prolific sprays of flowers Known as piko piko or bush asparagus caught the eye and gave me happy it is delicious steamed or as a garnish, feelings every time I saw them. The but please friends, research before flowers open in late spring and continue you harvest. throughout summer and into autumn. With any living thing, always remember They are a native to Italy and Croatia that they require food, water and love. and are often found growing in rocks Plants are no different from us in this next to the coast. They definitely sense, so when planting any one of prefer free draining soil, so a bank, these guys, read the requirements, add sandy situation or rock garden is ideal lots of compost and water regularly as for our metallic friend. Growing your own blueberries

Words by Shannon Poynter Photography + Styling by Jessica Whiting

I am yet to meet an individual, youngster or adult who doesn’t like blueberries. These little indigo gems will always have a safe place in our hearts, as they really do taste like New Zealand summer.

Find a warm sunny spot with free draining soil, and allow enough room for growth. They reach a size of 1.5m-3m. The leaves start as a cool blue/green and then put on a delightful autumnal show of rusts, oranges and scarlet.

But why buy them from the shops when you can grow them yourself? With a little attention and care you will have the full benefits of these nutrient-dense superfoods in your very own backyard.

Most blueberries do prefer a more acidic soil, but rabbiteyes can handle a more neutral Ph. Plant them with lots of compost and mulch with pine needles, as this will supply some acid.

ALL THE GOOD STUFF!

Alternatively, you can plant with some peat to give them a bit more oomph!

Along with tasting ridiculously good, blueberries won the antioxidant lottery when it comes to superfoods. They are high in the antioxidant anthocyanins, which is known to be anti-inflammatory and is very effective in lowering the ‘bad cholesterol’, and we are all down with natural remedies to help with common illnesses.

LONG TERM CARE

The biggest bane to a blueberry grower is birds, bless their feathery little hearts. They love the little cyan nuggets just as much as us, and they won’t even wait until they are ripe.

PICKING YOUR PLANTS

I would highly recommend draping some bird-netting over through the fruiting season. If you are thinking of planting more than a few bushes, have the room, and are handy with a hammer, constructing a wooden frame surrounded by chicken wire is the most effective way of keeping the chirpers out, and you have your very own blueberry home!

If you would like to plant blueberries and you live anywhere from Auckland north, then I would personally recommend planting the rabbiteye variety, or vaccinium ashei.

Cut back any old, diseased, or weak looking growth yearly. The berries grow on the growth of the previous year, with the strongest growth producing the heftiest fruit.

Rabbiteye blueberries are much more drought-tolerant and need less chill time throughout the colder months.

If you want to do a more severe prune for shape, this is best done in winter as the growth is dormant.

Blueberries prefer to be planted in pairs so they can cross pollinate. A winning combination is Blueberry ‘Tifblue’ and Blueberry ‘Tasty Blue’. You should be able to find these at any well known garden centre.

Within three to four years you can be looking upwards of 5kg of blueberry yields per plant.

They have shown to improve the effects of aging, are helpful for urinary tract health, and are high in folic acid. Need I say more, let’s all give three cheers for blueberries!

Eat fresh, freeze for winter, and share the love!  47

bracket shelf

Up your shelfie game with this simple addition to not only have a great looking place to display your favourite things, but clear the clutter too! You don’t need endless amounts of tools for this simple DIY, most places you purchase timber from will gladly cut your lengths to size for a small fee. For our shelf, we’ve used pre-made IKEA brackets purchased online and stained our shelf and brackets with Resene Colorwood Whitewash, which helps protect the wood for the occasional wipe over or dust. YOU WILL NEED:

++ ++ ++ ++ ++ ++ ++ ++ ++

Piece of pine plank, cut to size 2 x pre-made brackets Screws and wall anchors Resene Colorwood Whitewash Stud finder Power drill Pencil Level Ruler or tape measure

INSTRUCTIONS:

Measure the space where your shelf is going to go to get your shelf width. For anything around 80-125cm wide we recommend using a third bracket in the centre for added stability. Paint your brackets and shelf and allow to dry. Using the stud finder, locate your wall studs. If there are no studs behind your wall, you will need to use wall anchors. Mark with a pencil where you need to place your wall anchors (or drill directly if you are drilling into a wall stud), make sure your markings are level. Attach your wall brackets to the wall, place your shelf on top and secure with smaller screws from the underside. Decorate with your favourite things and marvel at a job well done!  51

Veuve Cliquot

tasting

Photography by Jessica Whiting

Bennetts of Mangawhai was transformed into a champagne paradise, thanks to Veuve Clicquot and Food By Chantelle. The ticket only event invited guests to taste and learn about Veuve Clicquot, with money being raised from the night going to Plunket Mangawhai. The food was beautifully matched, with every canapé complimenting the champagne being tasted, which included Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label NV, Rosé NV and Vintage 2008. We have a set of 4, limited edition Veuve Clicquot glasses that we will be giving away via our Instagram over the coming month. Follow us to find out how you can go in the draw.  53

launching gather Styling by Jessica Whiting Photography by Caren Davis, The Treehouse Creative

What is a beautiful magazine, without an equally stunning launch event? We held an intimate launch at Te Whai Bay Wines Vineyard in Mangawhai to celebrate our first issue. Sheltered within the beautiful, architectural conservatory, our special guests were able to finally flip through the launch issue of Gather while taking in the most amazing scenic backdrop. Limited edition Te Whai Bay Rosé was poured, and guests enjoyed cocktail canapés expertly made by Food By Chantelle while listening to live music from Tony Baker and guests. Special thanks to Caren Davis of The Treehouse Creative for our event photography, My Little Flower Company for the beautiful flowers and Honest Chocolat for the sweet treats in our guest favours, and of course thank you to all our guests! 

Our interviewee reading picks...

Adrian Daniel David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell “The premise of the book is that sometimes what seems like a strength is in fact a weakness. I’m a big fan of Gladwells books, I like this one because it’s a reminder of the importance of perspective. Sometimes things we perceive to be flaws or disadvantages are in fact the opposite.”
