Wiregrass announces summer hours Valdosta, Ga. – Wiregrass Georgia Technical College announces new operational hours for summer semester. Beginning May 18 until July 31 all Wiregrass campuses will be open on Monday through Thursday and closed on Friday. Most Wiregrass offices will operate on a Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. schedule with the campuses open until evening classes area completed. Driver’s Education Classes are now free at Wiregrass Fitzgerald, GA –Wiregrass is excited to announce that for a limited time Driver’s Education classes will be free. Learning to drive is a major milestone in a teen’s life. It’s important for young or inexperienced drivers to learn safe driving techniques. Joshua’s Law requires 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 additional hours of drive time with an instructor to receive a Class D license. Most insurance companies also give a reduction, approximately 10%, on insurance premiums upon successful completion. Normal cost for the course is $350, but through a tuition scholarship paid for by the Georgia Driver’s Education Commission, it is free through December 2015. Class sizes are limited so it’s important to register early. Participants must be between the ages of 15 – 18 and possess a Learner’s Permit. Those no eligible must pay the $350 tuition, part of which can be tax deductible. Summer classes being held on the Ben Hill-Irwin campus will run Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. June 22 – June 25, July 13 – July 16 and August 3 – August 6. Classes for the Coffee Campus are June 15 – June 18, and July 20 – July 23. The Wilcox Adult Education Center will hold classes on 4 consecutive Saturdays July 11, 18, 25, and August 1. School year options will run 4 consecutive Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. On the Ben Hill- Irwin campus those dates are September 5, 12, 19, and 26; October 3, 10, 17, and 24; and December 12, 19, 21, and 22. For the Coffee Campus the dates are September 5, 12, 19, and 26; November 7, 14, 21, and 28 and December 12, 19, 21, and 22. To ensure your space in the class, a completed registration form and a copy of the learner’s permit must be submitted. PASS Families Gather for End of the Year Celebration On Monday, May 11, 2015, the Wilcox Co. PASS program held its final Parent engagement event for the school year. Families joined their children in the WCES gymnasium for an afternoon of entertainment and refreshments. Susan Cravey, Family Engagement Coordinator, welcomed parents and guests. Project Director, Ginny Clack gave updates on PASS activities and reported on a recent field trip to the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. Lynn Young, PASS teacher, has been working with the Middle and High PASS students on a new program called “Reader's Theater”. Mrs. Young introduced the play, “Chaos in Fairy Tale Forest” performed by the students. Dressed up in costumes of their own making, Little Red Riding Hood meets Hansel and Gretel while Goldilocks is looking for Robin Hood. Robin Hood has killed the 3 bears, while Snow White is looking for her prince! The audience was enchanted with the mixed story lines and plots presented in the play. After the play everyone gathered in the cafeteria for ice cream and cookies prepared and served by Peggy Harris and Wendy Bohannon. Parents had the opportunity to interact with staff and fellowship with other families. Summer School will be in operation from June1st through June 25th. Wiregrass introduces 3D technology to the classroom Valdosta, Georgia – Imagine learning in 3D about the heart or pulmonary functions of the body. Seeing the procedures come to life in front of you without being in a clinical setting is now a reality. Wiregrass Georgia Technical College has introduced 3D AVRover technology to classroom instruction. The 3D AVRover is an amazing technology that allows instructors to engage students in learning early on in their programs. Training modules are available in a variety of subjects that include 3D videos, interactive objects, and virtual simulations that can be integrated into the course curriculum to enhance lessons by bringing the topics to life. The 3D AVRover is versatile and can be used to support the needs of all types of learners. “By investing in the 3D AVRover systems, Wiregrass is committed to providing our faculty with tools they can use to improve the quality of instruction while giving students access to technology they need to meet the demands of the 21st century workplace,” shared Marsha Dukes, Center of Excellence director. Some of the categories of learning content include; physical science, life science, earth and space science, science in personal and social perspectives, and math. Esthetics Program Coordinator and Instructor Kelly Ramirez shared, “I use the 3D Rover to teach Anatomy and Physiology as well as Skin Histology. Having the images pop off the screen gives students a better understanding of the subject matter through visual 3D images. Students are testing better in these areas as a result, and that makes them happy and their instructor happy!
