With one goal in mind, Frank Tate returns for his sixth season as head coach of his alma mater. “I want to bring a state championship to Lost Creek,” Tate said. “It haunts my dreams.” With what he has done in his first five years as the leader of the Hawks, that statement isn’t farfetched. The energetic player’s coach has recorded a 67-61 career record including averaging almost 15 wins a season in the past four years. In 2006, Tate led the Hawks to an 18-9 record, finishing just two wins shy of becoming the first team in program history to record a 20-win season. That year, SHHS finished 6-2 against AA and AAA schools. But it was 2007 that may have been Tate’s finest season at the helm. Tate took an young group that had just three seniors to a No. 4 ranking after a 5-4 upset over then No.-3 Williamstown. The win was one of three upsets of ranked opponents in 2007 including a 10-5 victory over then-No. 6 AA Clay County. Last year, he was selected as an assistant coach for the North squad in the North-South All-Star game in Charleston. A 1995 graduate of South Harrison High School, Tate’s no stranger to leading the Hawks to success. As a catcher, Tate finished his Hawk career as a four-year letterman in baseball where he garnered all-county honors (Fr., Jr., Sr.), All-Big 10 Conference honors (Jr., Sr.) and all-state honorable mention his senior year. He also earned three varsity letters in football where he was a two-time all-Harrison County member and also earned All-Big 10 and All-State recognition. In 1990 as a 13-year-old, Tate led his Harrison County Babe Ruth All-Star team to the National Championship Series in Jamestown, N.Y., where he finished the tournament with a .600 batting average and was named the tournament’s most outstanding hitter – one of only two West Virginians to ever win the award. After graduating from South Harrison, Tate earned his degree from Fairmont State College in 2003. He currently teaches history at SHHS while also serving as the offensive coordinator for the Hawks’ football team. He resides in West Milford with his wife Justina and son, Dane.

2008 (Fr.)

Previously known more for his above average defensive abilities, Chipps changed that mindset last season with a breakout year at the plate in his first year taking over full time at first base. One of the hardest workers and underrated players on the team, Chipps provided head coach Frank Tate with a reliable hitter in the middle of the order as the then-junior hit both fourth and fifth last season while continuing to lead the infield. His .492 career slugging percentage ranks fifth all-time among SHHS players over the last six seasons.

ALUMNI WEEKEND

An energetic second baseman, Chipps provide much needed depth to the Hawks’ middle infield. The aggressive 5-foot-5 sophomore has proven he’ll remain unfazed by higher competition as he battles for a starting position this season.
