FRANK TATE

When Frank Tate was named head coach of his alma mater in February 2004, he achieved a dream

he never thought he would reach.

Seven years later,

he keeps adding to that list. With one

Little Kanawha Conference Championship 4

and back-to-back Region II Section II Championships already in his trophy cabinet, he’s back and ready for more. With 11 of the team’s 18 players either freshmen and sophomores, including five in the starting lineup, the Hawks en2011 SOUTH HARRISON BASEBALL

dured a rebuilding season in 2010. Yet, under the guidance of Tate, South Harrison was still able to record its seventh-straight 10-win season – all coming under Tate – and won its second consecutive Region II Section II Championship after back-to-back come-frombehind victories against rival Notre Dame. The season follows the 2009 season, which is considered one of the most successful years in the program’s history. That’s when Tate, who is entering his eighth season as the Hawks’ head coach, led the Hawks to the program’s first sectional championship since 1997 and the third regional appearance

He sent three players onto play collegiate baseball – first baseman Craig Chipps (Fairmont State), pitcher Travis Gawthrop (Potomac State) and catcher Chase Snyder (Fairmont State). Gawthrop and Snyder also became the first pair of Hawk teammates to play in the North-

South All-Star Game where the duo combined for five innings on the mound in Game 2, helping the North squad four-hit the South in a 1-0, 9-inning loss. The 2009 team finished 14-9 season in a year plagued by rainouts and rescheduled contests. The Hawks won eight of their first 10 games to crack the top 10 of the West Virginia Associated Press Class-A standings. The team breezed through the sectional tournament, claiming a 14-5 victory over Notre Dame in the championship – the 80th win of Tate’s career – before beating Clay-Battelle on the road for the program’s third regional victory in its history. The team was eventually eliminated by No. 1 Moorefield, the eventual Class-A Champions, 6-1 at South Harrison. Their matchup with the Hawks was the Yellow Jackets’ closest game in their championship run. Tate took over in 2004 and inherited a young team of just 12 players and three seniors, only two of which had played before. In his first year, Tate led the Hawks to a 10-8 mark with wins of Class-A

powerhouse Madonna and Class-AA and Harrison County rival Lincoln. One year later, the Hawks broke through. SH ended 13-9 with three of those losses coming against top-ranked Notre Dame. In his third season, Tate led his team to finish just two wins shy of becoming the second team in program history to record 20 wins, ending with 18 – the second most in a single season in SHHS history. The team started the season 9-1 until a tough 3-0 loss to No. 1-ranked Pendleton County ended the streak. But the Hawks still couldn’t overcome the Irish in the sectional tournament. In a matchup between two of the top pitchers in the state, South Harrison’s Mark Frum and Notre Dame’s Preston Musgrave combined for 29 strikeouts in the 8-inning game, before a late Hawk error led to the Irish scoring the winning run. It was 2007 that may have been Tate’s finest season. The coach took a young group which consisted of just three seniors to a No. 4 ranking in the Class-A Associated Press Poll after a 5-4 upset over then No.-3 Williamstown. The win was one of three upsets of ranked opponents in 2007 including a 10-5 victory over then-No. 6 AA Clay County and eventual Class-AA runner-up Grafton. The 2008 season was a rebuilding year. The team finished 13-15 in a rough Little Kanawha Conference schedule. The Hawks saw plenty of individual honors, however, including those for senior Chris Bunnell who became the first player under Tate to be selected to the North-South All-Star Game. Tate is nothing new to leading the program to success, however. As a catcher, Tate finished his Hawk career as a fouryear letterman where he garnered all-Harrison County honors (Fr., Jr., Sr.), All-Big 10 Conference honors (Jr., Sr.) as well as Class-AA All-State honorable mention in 1995. In football, he was a two-time all-County member and also earned All-Big 10 and All-State recognition. In 1990 as a 13-year-old, Tate led his Harrison County Babe Ruth All-Star team to the National Championship Series where he finished the tournament with a .600 batting average and was named the tournament’s most outstanding hitter – one of only two West Virginians to ever win the award. After graduating from SHHS, Tate earned his degree from Fairmont State College in 2003. He currently teaches history at South Harrison High School while he has also been an assistant coach for the Hawks’ football team and head coach Brad Jett for the past 13 seasons. He resides in West Milford with his wife Justina and son, Dane.

ASSISTANT JEFF RICHARDS

assistant coach

Journey into the South Harrison dugout following a Hawks’ game or practice and you will likely find South

Harrison assistant coach Jeff Richards talking baseball.

It has become almost a tradition for Richards, who will beginning his 13th season with the South Harrison baseball program this season and his 34rd year in the coaching profession. “The man has forgotten more

about baseball that any of us players have ever known,” said former shortstop and outfielder Kris Fridley, who played four years under Richards. “Some of my favorite times were sitting in the dugout after practice 2011 SOUTH HARRISON BASEBALL

talking baseball with Coach Tate and Coach Richards. But it usually evolved into more than just sports because they know being a coach is about more than baseball. I got a lot of advice for both baseball and life, and they may not know it, but our seasons together meant a lot to me. “Even though my playing days are over, I always hope to help out in any way I can, and I still talk baseball with them any time I get a chance.” The 1971 graduate of South Harrison High School, who graduated as president of his senior class, has coached the Hawks baseball program on two

different occasions and under three different head coaches. Beginning in 1998, Richards helped current Robert C. Byrd head baseball coach Brad Nutter for two years before helping current Lincoln head softball coach Frank Lopez in 2000 and again in 2002. Richards took over as head coach during the 2003 season where he led South Harrison to an 8-14 mark including a sectional semifinals appearance. He also helped nurture and develop future Hawk Class-A All-State players Mark Frum and Cory Morrison, who were freshmen at the time. Frum finished the year as the team’s go-to pitcher with a 4-1 record in 26 innings while striking out 35 batters en route to earning all-Harrison County honors. Morrison, meanwhile, saw action in eight games and is still the only freshman to hit a home run during his first season as a Hawk since 2003. One year later in 2004, Richards became the assistant coach under current South Harrison baseball head coach Frank Tate where the pair have averaged 13 wins a season, featured two first-team all-state players, three first team all-Little Kanawha Conference selections and nine players earn first-team allHarrison County on 12 different occasions. Richards has also help guide three players – Chris Bunnell, Travis Gawthrop and Chase Snyder – to be selected to the North-South All-Star Game

while in 2009, Gawthrop was selected as the program’s first Little Kanawha Conference Player of the Year. “Every player wants to play for coaches like them,” Gawthrop said of Richards and Tate. “They will help you out anyway they can and it doesn’t matter if its on and off the field – if you have a problem, they’ll help you solve it. “My four years playing for the Hawks under them couldn’t have been better.” Richards has also served as South Harrison’s head wrestling and golf coach where he coached Hawk baseball players Brandon Allman, D.J. Atha, Chadd Chipps, Denny Chamberlain, Brandon Coffman, Gawthrop, Brandon Hatton, Dakota Kirby, Chris Miller and Snyder. He has also been an assistant high school softball coach under former head coach Bernie Hurst in 2001 while also assisting former wrestling coach Mike Barnette. 2011 SOUTH HARRISON BASEBALL

He served as head middle school football coach for five years (1999-2003) where in 2002, he led the Hawks to a Harrison County Championship – a team led by Frum and Morrison. Richards graduated from Fairmont State College in 1975 and currently resides in West Milford with his wife, Arline. They have two children. His oldest, Andrew, is a former infielder for the Hawks who graduated in 1999 and is currently the head golf pro at Black Creek Golf Course in Ellabell, Ga. Karson graduated from South Harrison in 2001 before playing one year of softball at AldersonBroaddus College in Philippi, W.Va. She is currently a teacher in the Harrison County School System and is in her fourth season as head coach of the South Harrison softball team where she has led the Hawks to two state tournament appearances and won the school’s first-ever West Virginia State Championship in 2010.

2011 SOUTH HARRISON BASEBALL

Former South Harrison catcher Brian Elliott’s No. 17 became the first jersey number retired in the 44-year history of the South Harrison Baseball Program on June 13, 2009. Elliott was an all-Harrison County catcher and a four-year starter for the Hawks from 1984 to 1987 under then-head coach John Scotchie. He was also a standout kicker for the South Harrison football team under former head coach Gary Barnette where he selected to the all-Harrison County squad for three seasons. On Aug. 3, 1995, Elliott was struck and killed by a drunk driver on his way home from work. Since, his parents Butch and Janet have been crucial members in the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Organization at both the county and state level. Through multiple fundraising efforts, the Elliotts have continually supported Hawk Baseball through donations from the Brian Elliott “Field of Dreams” Fund. Both were presented with a framed replica No. 17 jersey before the inaugural South Harrison Baseball Alumni Game in 2009.

ALUMNI GAME

Five decades of South Harrison Baseball came together once again for the second annual South Har-

rison Alumni Game on

June 26, 2010.

Twenty-eight former Hawk baseball players whose graduation years spanned from 1969 to 2009, participated in the game in front of a large group of Hawk baseball supporters. After the graduates from odd years claimed a 10-6 win in the inaugural game on June 13, 2009, the graduates from even years got payback with a 14-7 victory in the 9-inning game under the lights at South Harrison’s Field of Dreams. After pitching three innings,

2006 graduate Mark Frum picked up the win for Black (even) squad, striking out six batters in the process. Josh Haggerty (1996) also logged three innings for the Black, while Cory Morrison (2006) pitched the seventh and eighth innings. Mike Evans, a 1984 graduate and the father of current Hawk sophomore Gaige Evans, pitched the final inning of the game and didn’t allow a hit. Jimmy Radcliff, a 1993 graduate, started on the mound for the Orange (odd) squad. Despite allowing just one earned run, the right-hander suffered the loss. Billy Reed, a 1997 graduate and the winning pitcher in the inaugural SHHS Alumni Game, and Frank Blake (1993) threw two innings each and combined for eight strikeouts. Brian Gawthrop (2007) and Wayne Evans (1981) threw the final 2011 SOUTH HARRISON BASEBALL

two innings of the game for the Orange. The Orange struck first by scoring in the top of the first inning after 1993 graduate and former Harrison County Baseball Player of the Year Mike Johnson singled, stole second base, and scored on a bases-loaded walk by former high school teammate Matt Tate. But the Black squad scored twice in the bottom of the inning when Jeff Hileman (1984) and Wayne Huffman (1978) each scored on a Bubby Jones (2004) single and an error off the bat of 2008 graduate Jonathan Jett. After the Orange team tied the game again in the third, Black team representatives Clay Stonestreet (1980) and Tim Johnson (1982) both scored to put the Black squad up for good. The Orange team scored twice in the fifth and seventh innings, but it wasn’t enough, especially after the Black team scored six runs with an 8-7 lead in the bottom of the eighth to win easy. Stonestreet led the Black team, finishing as the only member of the team to finish with two hits, while Stonestreet, Tim Johnson, and Hileman each scored twice. Tim Johnson also added an RBI triple in the sixth inning that scored Haggerty. Blake, Gawthrop and Wayne Evans each finished with two hits for the Orange team. Eric Short, a 1997 graduate, and Kris Fridley (2009) each scored two runs. Both Gawthrop and Frum had doubles in the game, while John Swenskie (1985) joined Mike Johnson as the only players to record a stolen base.
