TOM SEARS

second season | south harrison ‘97 | 7-15 It was a simple message from one of the greatest basketball players of all-time: “You can never focus on the goal, you have to focus on the work ahead.” That message from NBA great Michael Jordan is what South Harrison head coach Tom Sears is basing the 2009-10 season on. It is a season that could be one of the school’s best in nearly 10 years, according to Sears. However, the preparation must be done first. “I believe that, without a doubt, we have enough talent to become one of the top teams in not only Harrison County, but in Class-A,” Sears said. “If you get ahead of ON HEAD COACH TOM SEARS yourself and you say ‘we’re going to win “I don’t have much good to say about my a sectional championship or a regional basketball career, but anything that or state championship,’ then you’re doing I do have good to say has something yourself and every person involved with to do with Coach Sears .” that team an injustice. — assistant coach Zach Hayhurst “You have to focus on the work to get you to those long-term goals.” “He helps me through a lot of situations It is a philosophy that Sears, a 1997 outside of basketball. It has almost become an expectation and I wanted to change that perspective,” Sears said. “South Harrison can be successful and will be successful – that was what I wanted to instill in the kids from day one. They always thought they could be successful, they just needed somebody to tell them they could.” According to Sears, his mission was accomplished, despite the team’s 7-15 final record.

“He helps me through a lot of situations outside of basketball. Whenever I need help, he’s always there. He’s just a really good guy that I know I can depend on.” — senior D.J. Atha

“People don’t look at a 7-15 record and say ‘oh boy, that’s a strong season.’” Sears said. “But people involved in the program saw a different basketball team last year. There was a different energy in the gym and there was a different passion in the players.” An assistant coach from 2000-to2008, Sears didn’t find out he would become the head coach of the program until Nov. 17, 2008 – the first day of practice last season. He arrived to practice only to find out the team was without a head coach. Shortly thereafter, the South Harrison High School administration gave Sears the position he’s always wanted. “I was brought in and the administration said ‘can you do this?’ I said absolutely. I was just handed a high school basketball program,” Sears said. “I wasn’t prepared at all. I remember scrambling on what to do and how I should run practice. “There’s no way I was going to pass it up, though.” Sears became involved in youth basketball immediately after graduating in 1997. In fact, his impact is still felt today. Fresh out of senior season with the Hawks in which he scored 150 points and

average 6.8 points-per-game, the head coach created a basketball league in association with Harrison County Parks and Recreation for high school players who didn’t make their respective high school teams. To do so, Sears made over 200 phone calls within a two-day period to jump start the league, which is still in existence today. PASTORING TO PERFECTION Along with entering his 10th season with the South Harrison High School basketball program, Sears is also heading into his 10th year as a pastor and his fourth year at New Beginnings Church in Good Hope, W.Va. Sears began preaching as an associate pastor at his grandfather’s church before founding his own church in Jane Lew. One year later, the newly-founded church merged with New Beginnings, where Sears has been ever since. It’s no coincidence his two loves have multiple similarities. “It’s just like coaching high school basketball, to a point. You have to coach people in church and you have to motivate them. They have to believe in you as a pastor, just like players need to believe

2009-10 SOUTH HARRISON BASKETBALL in you if you want to succeed,” Sears said. “At either sports or the Christian faith, if you don’t work, you’re not going to be good at it.” Sears admits that he never has, or never will, invited a player to church – he lets them decide for themselves. Last season, his players did just that. One January morning, Sears walked up to his podium, looked to his right to see the front row filled with basketball players. “What a moment that was. It was very special to me,” Sears said. “Right then, I knew that despite our record, I had to be doing something right. “They told me they wanted to show they’re gratitude to me. It showed me that I’m not just their coach.” It was the least the players could do to repay their first-year head coach. The church attendance continued throughout the season and still continues today. “Whenever I need help, he’s always there. He helps me through a lot of situations outside of basketball,” said senior D.J. Atha. “He’s just a really good guy that I know I can always depend on.” That trust has been something the second-year head coach has taken pride in throughout his coaching career and a foundation of what he says makes a successful coach. ““I think the players have faith in me and I definitely have faith in my players. It’s crucial to have a coach that you want to play for and if you don’t, you won’t. I think they want to play for me,” Sears said. “The relationship I have with my players doesn’t end when they graduate and that’s special to me. To me, basketball is not life, but

“Hawk pride means everything to me. There’s such a sense of family and community here that I think some of the bigger schools are starting to lose. It’s all about Hawk Pride. Whether I’m on the court or off it, it’s all about this school.” — head coach Tom Sears

there’s a lot of life lessons that can be learned through basketball. “I think my job as a coach is leading those players to those life lessons effectively.” “FULL-TIME EVERYTHING” Due to WVSSAC rules, Sears continually has to reapply for the head coaching position because he does not hold a teaching degree. Yet. The second-year head coach is currently a full-time student working on earning his degree, and therefore securing the head coaching job. The schooling certainly doesn’t make life any easier for Sears. Along with pastoring, he also serves as the

8

Hawks’ football play-by-play announcer for WOTR 96.3 – a position he has held for the past six years. He’s a full-time husband to his wife Nacole, a full-time father to three children – Breanna (10), Faith (2) and Tommy (8), who can almost always be found alongside his father and among the players on the South Harrison bench. “I’m pretty much a full-time everything,” he said. “But I’m grateful. I’m grateful for the opportunity for the second year. I’m grateful to the administration, to [SHHS Athletic Director] Coach Jett and to the parents who entrust me with their kids. “I love every former player who continues to support the program and I’m thankful for all of the things I’ve learned.” “We’ve may have only had one team go to Charleston in this school’s existence. But I hope I am able to stay the head coach long enough for that to change.” The coach admits that as long as he has the opportunity to coach at his alma mater, he will never roam the sidelines of another basketball program. “[Former South Harrison head football coach] Gary Barnette stopped me one day and said, ‘there’s something about you...Orange and Black will always flow through your viens,’” Sears recalled. “He was right. “Hawk pride means everything to me. There’s such a sense of family and community out here that I think some of the bigger schools are starting to lose. It’s all about Hawk Pride. “Whether I’m on the court or off it, it’s all about this school.”

South Harrison assistant coach Stanley Coleman admits he may have been his calling. “I tell a lot of people I should’ve been a teacher,” Coleman said. In all reality, he is. Coleman, a 1981 graduate of South Harrison High School, has done everything but teach a class it seems. In the past, he has served as the head coach for the SHHS boys track and volleyball teams while he has also coached the South Harrison Middle School girls track team. “I love working with the kids, that’s the best part. I think it keeps me young,” he said. “When you’re involved in a lot of things, it gets tough. But it’s all worth it.” Coleman also volunteers with the Hawk football team and as previously been the Athletic Boosters President for the school. His biggest volunteer experience, however, would be with 4-H where he has been a leader for the Rockford Rockets 4-H Club for the past 20 years. “He’s a tremendous person with a great heart,” said South Harrison head coach Tom Sears. “He cares so much about the kids and this community.” The 2009-10 season is Coleman’s third consecutive with the Hawks basketball program. He has served as the junior varsity head coach for the past two seasons. “Sometimes you just need somebody to be a good support to you. He’s my support,” Sears said. Coleman resides in Lost Creek with wife Marilyn of 24 years and children Brad (23) and Rachel (20), both students at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Besides the players, it’s the pride in his hometown that keeps Coleman’s support at full strength. It’s the community. I’ve lived in this area since I was four years old, I’ve never left and I never will,” he said. “This is home and this is where it will always be.”

In his first season as an assistant basketball coach last year, Zach Hayhurst found out just what coaching was all about. It was more difficult than he thought. “It’s hard. You try to get them to see what you see,” Hayhurst said. “But no matter how hard you try, I don’t think you ever do.” Hayhurst returns for his second season under head coach Tom Sears. The 2006 graduate of South Harrison High School was a three-year member of the Hawks basketball team as a point guard. He finished with 216 career points and finished seventh all-time in SHHS history with 39 career 3-pointers made, including making 25 in his senior season with the Hawks. “Last year was fun just seeing everybody come out with different attitudes,” Hayhurst said. “Players were actually excited to come to practice, to come to games and just be around the gym in general.” He was also a four-year standout for the South Harrison football program including leading to the Hawks to a Class-A semifinal appearance in 2006. Hayhurst joined the SHHS football team as an assistant coach in charge of quarterbacks and the secondary this past season. “He’s a good man, a great man,” Sears said. “He’s so knowledgeable of the game and he’s a tremendous addition to the entire program.” Having Hayhurst join the staff was proof for Sears that he “must be doing something right.” “Everything I preach to the players about building relationships, he’s evidence of it,” Sears said. “I coached him and now he wants to work with me. It’s a big deal for the players to see that and I’m so proud that he wanted to come back and help develop this program.”

chris RICHARDS varsity assistant first season

The 2009-10 season is Richards’ first as an assistant coach for head coach Tom Sears and the South Harrison basketball program. A 1989 graduate of South Harrison High School, Richards previously helped the Hawks during the allotted three-week summer training session before Sears asked if he’d join the staff full-time for the season. “I know it would be something I’d like to do,” Richards said. “I was thrilled when he asked me to be a part of the staff.” That three-week period, Richards admits, was just as beneficial to him as it was the players. Along with the new offense that was in the process of being installed, Richards also used the time to introduce himself and his coaching style with the players. He was learning the ways “as much as the freshmen were.” “With the new offense along with getting to know the kids, those three weeks were just as important to me than it was to them,” Richards said. “We played 16 games in three weeks and that gave me a chance to develop some rapport with the players and that was important. “It’s been a little harder than I expected, but the other coaches have helped a lot. We all get along and we all have that Hawk Pride because we’re all from here.” Richards was a two-year second basemen at West Virginia Tech from 1990 through 1991 after lettering two years at South Harrison High School. He was also a member of the Hawks’ track and basketball teams. Richards is a full-time baseball umpire where he umpires junior varsity and varsity high school baseball along with offseason collegiate wooden bat leagues.

YEAR IN REVIEW “Last year was a starting point; It was a building block for success. Last year’s seniors set a foundation that this year’s group is going to build on.” — head coach Tom Sears

While walking off the court following last season’s 66-64 win over in-county rival Liberty on Senior Night, first-year South Harrison head coach Tom Sears couldn’t help but look back at what his team had already accomplished. Though the Hawks entered the game with a 6-13 record, the South Harrison gymnasium was at capacity to watch the rejuvenated Hawks win their second game over the Mountaineers that season and see seven seniors play their final home game in the Orange and Black. The game lived up to its expectations, as the Hawks jumped out to an early lead and held on late. “That was the point where you really felt a sense of accomplishment. We hadn’t arrived, but that showed that we were taking steps in the right direction,” Sears said. “It’s been a long time since South Harrison had a win on senior night. “That felt pretty good, especially with such a large crowd, a lot of family and a lot of community.” Sears admits he saw it coming, however, even after his team’s first game of the season at home against Lincoln. South Harrison led the Class-AA Cougars for most

of the first half before falling late, the new-look team was obvious to those in attendance. “There was a new energy in the gym, there was a new passion in the players and you could definitely see a transition from the old into the new,” Sears said. Although a loss to Doddridge County in the Sectional Tournament ended the Hawks’ season with a 7-15 record, Sears admits that progress was certainly made in his first season as head coach. The group ended with five wins over Class-AA opponents and featured one of Harrison County’s leading scorers in point guard Davey Wriston. Wriston ended his career with one of the program’s top 10 individual seasons, averaging 14.7 points-per-game while making 91 free-throws – third most of any individual season in South Harrison history. “Last year was a starting point; It was a building block for success. Even though the record was a losing one, if had we done just a few little things differently, we could have been 15-7,” Sears said. “Last year’s seniors set a foundation that this year’s group is going to build on.”

2008-09 SEASON:

Games: 12 Points-per-game: 0.8 Total points: 9 Field goals: 3 3-pointers: 1 Free-throw percentage: 100% (2/2) South Harrison senior D.J. Atha enters the 2009-10 basketball season with three years of valuable experience. He wants his fourth year to count. The senior saw action in 12 varsity contests last season, averaging 0.8 points-per-game, but plans on making an immediate impact as one of three Hawks over 6-foot-4. “I’m trying to lead a little bit more than I have in past years,” Atha said. “I try to talk more and I’m working hard. “I’m just trying to be the best team player I can be and help out in any way I can.” Because of his height, South Harrison head coach Tom Sears feels Atha will play a vital role in the backcourt for the Hawks and will help establish a presence under the basket. “He’s been a big surprise. He has worked so hard over the off season and it has shown,” Sears said. “He’s really invested into his senior season and because of it, I think he’s going to have a great one.” Atha is also a three-year member of the Hawk baseball program as an outfielder where he has scored six career runs, no more so important than his game-winning run in the 12th inning against Roane County last season. He’s been a three-year member of the South Harrison golf team, as well. Atha hopes to attend radiology school after graduation. As for his senior year, Atha believes it is important to set his goals high. “We want to win sectionals and we want to head to states,” he said. “It’s my senior year and it’s just now starting to hit me. I want to make the most of it.”

2008-09 SEASON:

Games: 5 Points-per-game: 0.2 Total points: 1 Field goals: 0 3-pointers: 0 Free-throw percentage: 50% (1/2) All South Harrison players have received ‘the look’ from Hawk head coach Tom Sears at least once in their career. “It makes you wonder what he’s thinking,” said senior Troy Devericks. When Sears gave Devericks the look after the end of last season, the then-junior knew exactly what his coach was meaning. “He told me that I had to work hard in the offseason and he’s the main reason why I have worked so hard,” Devericks said. “I don’t want to disappoint him.” Since the end of last season, the senior surely hasn’t as his head coach has noticed the change. With only five games of varsity experience last season, Devericks is expected to start at shooting guard for the Hawks. He was also named one of the Hawks’ three captains. It’s two honors that, according to Sears, can be credited to his beneficial offseason. “He’s one of our hardest workers and he’s also one of our most improved players,” Sears said. “He’s a tremendous shooter who will see a lot of minutes for us this year. He’s a great, great kid.” Devericks said his biggest improvement has been seen in his mid-range jump shot, which he focused on during the allotted three-week training period in the summer. It wasn’t just personal progress that the senior noticed during the summer, however. “People have no clue how much those three weeks help,” he said. “When we entered the regular season practices, they ran so much smoother because we just get in and get out. Everyone knows our offense and we don’t have to keep going over things.” Devericks believes it’s his responsibility to translate that offseason progress into SHHS’s first winning season since 2003. “Being a captain, you want to set an example and set the tone for this team’s attitude and how we approach a game,” he said. “We’ve all been working hard since last season ended and we want to show everybody how hard we’ve worked.”

Games: 22 Points-per-game: 4.6 Total points: 101 Field goals: 39 3-pointers: 0 Free-throw percentage: 45.1% (23/51) South Harrison forward Dakota Kirby is entering the 200910 season with a vastly different approach than his first three seasons with the Hawks. Before, Kirby was simply a follower on senior-led teams. Now, as one of South Harrison’s leading returners, Kirby will help make up the core for head coach Tom Sears. “I used to be the young guy because I had to follow everybody’s orders,” Kirby said. “Now I’m in a different role. I can’t get scared and hide behind the other guys. I have to stay calm under pressure and handle whatever comes our way.” Kirby made more starts and fields goals (39) than any other returning player this season. He will also enter as the team’s second-leading returning scorer as his 101 points in 2008-09 was fifth on the team. “You get the feeling that there’s a lot more respect for you, just because you’re depended on to answer a lot of questions, especially from the younger guys,” Kirby said. “But I want to do help because I think I can. I have an understanding of what is going on in a game and what to expect. I know the tempo and I know our goals so I can help everyone else so no one gets carried away at times.” Kirby’s senior year is also different because one particular new teammate, brother Logan who is a freshman on the Hawks’ junior varsity team. The elder Kirby admits his brother is likely more developed than he was as a freshman, but he still can’t help but get frustrated at his brother’s progress on the court. “I’ll sit over and watch him in some situations during practice and I get angry with him sometimes,” Kirby said. “I might explain how not to do something, but he’s just like most freshman and it takes him awhile to catch on.” That frustration is all a part of learning the leadership process, according to Sears. “He’s one of the most experience players we have coming back and that has shown as far as leadership is concerned. His experience is huge.,” Sears said. “We’re going to be so much more versatile just because of the things he can do for us.”

2008-09 SEASON:

Games: 6 Points-per-game: 0.2 Total points: 1 Field goals: 0 3-pointers: 0 Free-throw percentage: 50% (1/2) Derrick Matheny would be the first to admit he won’t lead the team in many statistical categories this season. It’s not his job, he says. “I can score when I need to, but I’m not the best scorer on the team so I’m not going to try and be,” Matheny said. “My job is to get the ball to the better shooters.” South Harrison head coach Tom Sears adds Matheny’s The second-year head coach considers the senior one of the best defenders he has to his disposal. “He’s special on the defensive end and he’s as fast as lightning. He’s all over the place,” Sears said. “He’s a great kid from a great family and he’s going to be a big help this season.” Matheny gives most of that credit to Sears, who he says taught him how to be “scrappy and aggressive” during the junior varsity season in 2007-08 while Sears was still an assistant coach. From there, it all came naturally for the guard. “That’s my main thing and that’s how I’m going to contribute most to this team,” Matheny said. “I take the utmost pride in the way I play defense.” Playing pick-up games with teammate and twin brother, Dustin, doesn’t hurt either. Derrick considers his brother one of the “best offensive players around,” therefore helping him develop as a player. “He’s really challenging to guard,” Derrick said. “Guarding him in practice makes me quick and makes me versatile because I always have to find ways to stop him. That carries over into games.” Now in his fourth and final year with the Hawks, Matheny says he still can’t believe his career is almost over. “I remember my first three years and how all of the seniors were getting their last chance to play. It seemed like I would never be a senior,” he said. “This year is just flying by, it’s just crazy to believe. “It’s hard to capture and enjoy it because sometimes it seems like everything is in third person and I’m just along for the ride.”

He’s developed a confident strategy in order not to do so. “You have to take things as they come,” Matheny said. “Everyone on this team expects us to do some really good things, but we have to take it one game at a time. We have to accomplish our little goals first.” If the Hawks are going to accomplish their goals, it’ll likely be Matheny leading them there. The senior is the leading returning scorer for South Harrison after averaging 6.7 points-per-game in a limited role off the bench for the majority of the 2008-09 season. Still, his 19 games of varsity experience is expected to pay dividends this season. “He’s our best all-around player. He’s such a tremendous scorer with such a clean shot,” said South Harrison head coach Tom Sears. “He’s a very hard worker and because of that, he has developed into a great leader.” The junior has already etched his name into the South Harrison basketball recordbooks. Matheny finished 67-for-93 from the foul line year, good enough for the sixth-best free-throw percentage in school history. His 67 free-throws made ranks 10th. The point guard’s 12 free throws made against Doddridge County on Feb. 17, 2009 ranks third all-time in school history. Matheny credits part of his offensive success to his teammate and twin brother, Derrick. “It’s like having another set of eyes,” Dustin said. “He’s my criticizer. Whenever I make a mistake that I didn’t notice, he’s always there to tell me what I did wrong and how to fix it. “He’s probably the best defender we have so it’s always good when he’s on me in practice because he makes me adjust. I have to find out new ways to get by him.” Despite last year’s success, Matheny is hoping his on-thecourt performance translates into more team achievements in 2009. “I expect a good season. I want a winning season and hopefully we can get past sectionals at least,” he said.

MERANCIO senior | 5-foot-8 | 155 lbs.

2008-09 SEASON:

Games: N/A Points-per-game: N/A Total points: N/A Field goals: N/A 3-pointers: N/A Free-throw percentage: N/A It has been a two-year absence from the hardwood for South Harrison senior Zach Merancio. His journey back to the court has been rougher than he previously expected. “I’ve been a little rusty. It was hard keeping up with everybody, but I think I’m catching on quick,” Merancio said. “Thankfully the guys have been picking me up. “Dustin (Matheny), especially, has been helping me out a lot. When I have questions, he talks to me and helps me understand since he runs the point, too.” Merancio last played for the Hawks’ freshman team under current junior-varsity coach Stanley Coleman. “He hasn’t played in awhile but he’s such a nice addition to the team because he’s so athletic and he has been catching on quickly,” said South Harrison head coach Tom Sears. “We’re excited to work him in.” Merancio was a standout running back for the Hawk football program where he led the Hawks to a 6-4 season, earning all-Harrison County honors along the way. Running back and point guard has many similarities, according to the senior. “You see things develop just like when you’re trying to get through the offensive line,” he said. “You see lanes open up and you find ways to score.” One thing football didn’t prepare Merancio for, however, was the extra conditioning during the preseason. Even with brutal football workouts, the senior still said it “took time to get used to.” With one final year to wear the Orange and Black, Merancio said he’s not expecting much other than a memorable final season. “I’m not coming in looking to start. I don’t expect to start and I know I have to earn what I get,” he said. “I just want to come in and hopefully bring a little leadership and help out as much as I can and in whatever way I can. “I’m just looking forward to having fun. I’ve really been looking forward to that first game.”

MERRILL senior | 6-foot-5 | 270 lbs.

2008-09 SEASON:

Games: 20 Points-per-game: 1.7 Total points: 34 Field goals: 14 3-pointers: 0 Free-throw percentage: 40% (6/15) South Harrison head coach Tom Sears has three post players over 6-foot-4 to his disposal. The heart of those three is likely Andy Merrill, a 6-foot-5 center who returns after seeing action in 20 varsity games last season. “He’s pretty much unstoppable in the paint when he gets the ball,” Sears said. Merrill finished with 34 points while going 40-percent from the free-throw line. With 6-foot-4 D.J. Atha and 6-foot-6 Issac Gaines all returning after playing large roles in last season’s 7-15 finish, Merrill said the increased backcourt presence will be one of the main differences this season. “It’s going to help us out a lot,” Merrill said. “We’re going to be a lot stronger in the paint just because we’re all coming back from last year. “Even us bigger guys, we can still handle the ball pretty well and shoot a decent jump shot.” Coming back after being the main inside presence for the Hawks last season has already been beneficial to Merrill and has allowed him to help develop younger post players for upcoming seasons. The biggest aid for both the team and himself, however, was the allotted 3-week training over the summer, which the center said “helped tremendously.” “I’ve never had anything like that before but I think it will definitely pay off,” Merrill said. “It gave me and the entire team a lot of encouragement. It let us know how good we could be.” Knee injuries have plagued the senior throughout his career and will likely keep him from playing in full strength once again, he said. “It keeps me off the floor a lot and I hate that. Then when I’m out there, I might not be as explosive as I want to be,” he said. “It’s kind of a wait-and-see thing. “But I’m looking forward to this season. Coach Sears is back for his second year, it’s my senior year and we have a lot of expectations that we’re trying hard to meet.”

SWIGER senior | 5-foot-11 | 145 lbs.

2008-09 SEASON:

Games: 9 Points-per-game: 0.9 Total points: 8 Field goals: 2 3-pointers: 1 Free-throw percentage: 50% (3/6) The 2009-10 season doesn’t seem real for South Harrison guard Jesse Swiger. “It’s been a great year, but I don’t feel like I senior,” Swiger said. “Nothing great has happened like you imagine a senior year would.” The senior is confident that this year’s basketball season will have plenty of those memorable moments, however. Swiger is in just his second year at South Harrison after transferring from Hedgesville High School following his sophomore year. Adjusting to new surroundings and new teammates hasn’t come easy, he admits, but the progress is finally starting to show. “Coming in and getting used to playing with these guys in just two years has kind of been hard, especially because most of the team has played together all their lives,” Swiger said. “Then, most of these guys were playing varsity last year and I was still on J.V. so we didn’t get that chance to get used to each other. “But I think we’re finally getting used to each other.” The process has been much easier on the offensive side of the ball which Swiger admits is his strength. He showed that last year as he scored eight points in just nine varsity games in limited action. “He has natural offensive ability,” Sears said. “He’s one of the better pure shooters I’ve seen.” Sears also believes Swiger is developing into a 3-point threat for the Hawks. That, the guard says, is just fine with him. “Offense is where I can help this team the most,” Swiger said. “It’s more of my game and what I understand the best. I take a lot of pride in my offense; I’ve always been like that.” Swiger is also a member of the Hawks baseball team as an outfielder and a pitcher. He saw action in 18 games for head coach Frank Tate, finishing with six runs, six RBI, five stolen bases and a .263 batting average. He is also a member of the South Harrison High School Pep Club and Student Council.
