HEAD COACH

FRANK

TATE

2009 HARRISON COUNTY COACH OF THE YEAR When Frank Tate was

named head coach of his alma mater in Febru-

ary 2004, he achieved a dream he never thought he would reach.

Six years later, he just keeps adding to that list. With one Little Kanawha Conference Championship

already in his trophy cabinet, he’s back and ready for more. The seventh-year head coach is coming off his most successful season as head coach of South Harrison as last season Tate led the Hawks to the program’s first sectional championship since 1997 and the second regional appearance in the program’s history, the first coming in 1984. Tate also picked up the school’s first Little Kanawha Conference Championship with a 2-1 win over Williamstown, a team the Hawks beat three times during the 2009 season. For the team’s record-breaking success, the 1995 graduate of South Harrison High School was named the Harrison County Coach of the Year by the Clarksburg Exponent-Telegram and made his second consecutive appearance as an assistant coach in the North-South All-Star game. The season continued the coach’s streak of winning at least 10 wins in a season while he also sent three players onto play collegiate baseball – first baseman Craig Chipps (Fairmont State), pitcher Travis

Gawthrop (Potomac State) and catcher Chase Snyder (Fairmont State). Gawthrop and Snyder also became the first pair of Hawk teammates to play in the North-South All-Star Game. They also impressed in the contest as both combined for five innings on the mound in Game 2, helping the North squad four-hit the South in a 1-0, 9-inning loss. Gawthrop started at third base in Game 1 and on the mound in Game 2, ending with three hitless innings. Snyder was his teammate’s battery partner in the nightcap, starting behind the plate while he finished 1-for-3 in the opener with a double. Only one other Class-A player was selected for the game. The pair helped lead Tate’s squad to a 14-9 season in a year plagued by rainouts and rescheduled contests. After a tough loss in the team’s season opener at Grafton, the Hawks responded well, winning eight of their next nine games to crack the top 10 of the West Virginia Associated Press Class-A standings.

HEAD COACH FRANK TATE The team only nearly missed claiming an upset of eventual Class-AA State Champion Lincoln, despite pitching two freshmen in the game. The Hawks moved on to claim a 2-1 win over Williamstown in the Little Kanawha Conference Semifinals to clinch the LKC Divisional Championship and eventually the league title, improving Tate’s record in the Little Kanawha Conference postseason to 3-0. It was also the school’s first LKC Tournament victory in the program’s history. The team breezed through the sectional tournament, claiming a 7-0 win over Doddridge County and a 14-5 victory over Notre Dame in the championship. The win over the Irish marked Tate’s 80th career victory as South Harrison’s head coach. The Hawks then beat Clay-Battelle 8-7 on the Cee-Bees’ home field in the first round of the regional tournament for the second regional victory in program’s history. The team eventually fell to No. 1 Moorefield, the eventual Class-A Champions, 6-1 at South Harrison. Their matchup with the Hawks was the Yellow Jackets’ closest game in the postseason. Tate is 81-70 (.536) in seven seasons as head man of his alma mater, although 31 of his losses are against opponents of either Class-AA or Class-AAA. Tate is 61-36 (.629) against Class-A teams and 41-30 against Little Kanawha Conference foes. Tate took over in 2004 and inherited a young team of just 12 players and three seniors, only two of which had played before. In his first year, Tate led the Hawks to a 10-8 mark, and although the season didn’t turn out as well as he would have liked, the team showed signs of promise with wins of Class-A powerhouse Madonna and Class-AA and Harrison County rival Lincoln. One year later, the Hawks broke through. South Harrison ended 13-9 with a 6-4 mark inside the Mason Dixon Conference with three of those losses coming against top-ranked Notre Dame.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

ON HEAD COACH FRANK TATE “Playing for Coach Tate was an honor and a privilege. Coach is such a competitor that he wants perfection and pushed us all to strive for it. It was a great four years playing for someone who you knew would be fighting for you on every pitch .” — former player Kris Fridley “Coach Tate and Coach Richards were the ones who helped me play at the next level. Every year I learned something new under them. What they did for me is something I’ll never forget.” — former player Travis Gawthrop In his third season, Tate led his team to finish just two wins shy of becoming the first team in the program history to record 20 wins, ending with 18 – the second most in a single season in South Harrison history. The team started the season 9-1 until a tough 3-0 loss to No. 1-ranked Pendleton County in the McDonald’s Classic Baseball Tournament ended the streak. The team finished 6-2 against Class-AA and Class-AAA opponents and entered the sectional tournament on a four-game winning streak and 10-runned Doddridge County in the opening round. But the Hawks still couldn’t overcome the Irish. In a matchup between two of the top pitchers in the state, South Harrison’s Mark Frum and Notre Dame’s Preston Musgrave combined for 29 strikeouts in the eight-inning game, before a late Hawk error led to the Irish scoring the winning run. But it was 2007 that may have been Tate’s finest

season at the helm. The head coach took a young group which consisted of just three seniors to a No. 4 ranking in the Class-A Associated Press Poll after a 5-4 upset over then No.-3 Williamstown. The win was one of three upsets of ranked opponents in 2007 including a 10-5 victory over then-No. 6 AA Clay County and eventual Class-AA runner-up Grafton. The 2008 season was a year of rebuilding for the squad. The team finished 13-15 in a rough Little Kanawha Conference schedule, but fell just one win short of claiming the sectional championship. The Hawks saw plenty of individual honors, however, including those for senior Chris Bunnell who became the first player under Tate to be selected to the North-South All-Star Game. Tate is nothing new to leading the program to success, however. As a catcher, Tate finished his Hawk career as a four-year letterman in baseball where he garnered all-Harrison County honors (Fr., Jr., Sr.), All-Big 10 Conference honors (Jr., Sr.) as well as Class-AA All-State honorable mention his senior year. He also earned three varsity letters in football where he was a two-time all-Harrison County member and also earned All-Big 10 and All-State recognition. In 1990 as a 13-year-old, Tate led his Harrison County Babe Ruth All-Star team to the National Championship Series in Jamestown, N.Y., where he finished the tournament with a .600 batting average and was named the tournament’s most outstanding hitter – one of only two West Virginians to ever win the award. After graduating for South Harrison, Tate earned his degree from Fairmont State College in 2003. He currently teaches history at South Harrison High School while he has also been an assistant coach for the Hawks’ football team and head coach Brad Jett for the past 12 seasons. He resides in West Milford with his wife Justina and son, Dane.

Richards took over as head coach during the 2003 season where he led South Harrison to an 8-14 mark including a sectional semifinals appearance. He also helped nurture and develop future Hawk Class-A All-State players Mark Frum and Cory Morrison, who were freshmen at the time. Frum finished the year as the team’s go-to pitcher with a 4-1 record in 26 innings while striking out 35 batters en route to earning all-Harrison County honors. Morrison, meanwhile, saw action in eight games and is still the only freshman to hit a home run during his first season as a Hawk since 2003.

An outfielder with a lot of potential and enthusiasm, Allman returns to South Harrison and head coach Frank Tate after an encouraging freshman season in 2009. The sophomore can play both right and left field while he has also been worked at first base.

Effort is never in question for Atha, who will likely begin his first season in a starting role this season after serving as a valuable asset off the bench the past two seasons. As one of just four seniors, the 6-foot-4 three-sport athlete will be depended on to provide leadership to a otherwise youthful team.

Chamberlain showed last season he is capable of being a adequate replacement to take over at first base for the departed Craig Chipps. With plenty of room still to develop both at the plate and in the field, head coach Frank Tate is hoping a year of experience goes a long way for the sophomore.

Chipps burst onto the scene midway through last season, providing much-needed depth and a reliable bat to fill out the Hawks’ order, particularly in the postseason where he finished 4-for-10 with three runs and an RBI. Kirby will be depended on to solidify the middle of the Hawks’ order while manning the corner infield spots while possibly spending time in the outfield.

Miller hopes to follow up his record-setting junior season with a strong final year as a Hawk. The right fielder became the team’s main power threat in 2009, tying a junior record with three home runs. He returns as the team’s leading hitter and one of the main focuses of the offense.

After a standout freshman season, Snyder will return to the Hawks looking for an even more impressive sophomore campaign. After holding down second base last season, Snyder will likely be counted on to take over at shortstop for the Hawks while also being one of head coach Frank Tate’s leading hitters and go-to pitchers.

Swenskie turned a concern last season into a strength when the freshman held down centerfield for the Hawks. The athletic sophomore returns in 2010 with plenty of potential still to reach both on the mound and at the plate and will be one of South Harrison’s biggest all-around threats this season.

1 GAME

The Inaugural Alumni Game Twenty-three former South Harrison baseball standouts were on hand for the inaugural South Harrison Baseball Alumni Game held on June 13, 2009. Rain forced the previously schedule Alumni Weekend which was scheduled for May 2nd. The 7-inning game featured players for as early as 2009 graduates and as late as 1970. But the game wasn’t the only event that made the day an memorable one for the baseball program. Before the game, the No. 17 of former South Harrison catcher Brian Elliott was retired, making it the first retired jersey number in program history. Elliott’s parents, Butch and Janet, as well as other family members were on hand for the ceremony. Billy Reed, 1997 graduate,

17 BRIAN ELLIOTT

Former South Harrison catcher Brian Elliott’s No. 17 became the first jersey number retired in the 42-year history of the South Harrison Baseball Program on June 13, 2009. Elliott was an all-Harrison County catcher and a four-year starter for the Hawks from 1984 to 1987 under thenhead coach John Scotchie. He was also a standout kicker for the SHHS football team where he made the all-Harrison County team all three seasons. In 1995, Elliott was struck and killed by a drunk driver on his way home from work. Since, his parents Butch and Janet have been crucial members in the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Organization at both the county and state level. Both were presented with a framed replica No. 17 jersey before the inaugural South Harrison Baseball Alumni Game.

2009 ALUMNI GAME

started on the mound for the Black squad while Mike Evans of 1984 pitched first for Orange. The Black squad, which consisted of graduates of odd graduation years wasted no time early in the game, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning to cruise to a 10-6 victory. Shortstop and former Alderson-Broaddus middle infielder Mike Johnson (1993) got things started for the Black squad. Johnson, who batted leadoff, scored the first run of the game and finished 2-for-3 in the game with two doubles and three RBI. Teammate Stu Hurd (1982) was the only player in the game to pick up three hits, finishing 3-for-3 with a double. John Swenskie also ended with a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3 with a

run scored for the Black squad. Meanwhile, the knuckleballer Reed threw three scoreless innings for the Black squad before giving way to Jimmy Radcliff, who didn’t allow a run in two innings pitched. After four innings, the Black team held a 7-0 advantage. Ray Cantrell (1981) pitched the final two innings for the Black. Despite the large deficit, the Orange squad battled back late. Behind a 1-for-3 performance including a double from Wayne Huffman (1978) and a two-RBI single from Mike Short in the fourth inning, the Orange cut the lead to two before the Black team scored three runs in the sixth inning to seal the victory. Reed picked up the victory for the Black team while Evans suffered the tough loss. Larry Stephens (1988) and Kris Southern (1992) pitched the third and fourth innings for the Orange squad before giving way to 2006 graduate Mark Frum and 2009’s Travis Gawthrop for the final two innings.

craig CHIPPS

3-year letterman | 2-year starter

It’s not often a high school player makes a name for himself with his defensive abilities. Craig Chipps, however, did just that. The two-year starter for the Hawks prided himself on his performance in the field and it paid off as in his three years at South Harrison, Chipps became known as likely the strongest defensive first baseman in both Harrison County and the Little Kanawha Conference. While Chipps could have been the first to blame for the Hawks’ success in the infield, his performance at the plate usually went unnoticed. The three-year letterman endured a breakdown season as his first full year as a starter in 2008 where he eclipsed the 30-hit mark and finished within the top 10 in RBI among Harrison County hitters. He finished his career sixth among South Harrison hitters since 2003 in RBI, ending with 48 for his career although he missed his freshman season with a foot injury. Chipps went on to attend Fairmont State University in Fairmont, W.Va., where he played one semester as a Falcon under head coach George Yanchek. kris FRIDLEY

4-year letterman | 3-year starter

A three-sport standout during his time at South Harrison, what Kris Fridley brought to head coach Frank Tate’s crew will surely be missed in the upcoming season. The versatile Fridley served as Tate’s go-to player when it came to adding flexibility into the lineup and the three-year starter was solid at all three outfield positions during his time as a Hawk while moving to shortstop during his senior year. He also made one appearance at first base as a freshman. His versatility could be directly correlated with Fridley’s vast knowledge of the game, which allowed him to become one of the Hawks’ biggest threats on the base paths in the Tate era and in the batter’s box. As a senior, the four-year letterman took over the leadoff spot in the order where he scored a team-high 21 runs, 12 stolen bases and two triples. He became only the fifth South Harrison player in the Tate era to have at least three seasons of double-figure hits and runs scored. The three-year starter finished in the top five among Hawks since 2003 in runs scored, stolen bases, games played and sacrifices, despite being utilized in just 12 games as a freshman. He currently attends West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va., where is in enrolled in the school’s Pre-Pharmacy program. SENIOR (2009): Named to special honorable mention Class-A All-State team... selected to first-team All-Harrison County...received second-team All-Little Kanawha Conference honors...recorded third straight season of at least 20 hits, joining only teammates Mark Frum, Brian Gawthrop, Cory Morrison and Chase Snyder to accomplish the feat since 2003...set a career-high in RBI (9) and stolen bases (12)...finished career first in sacrifices (9), tied for second with 28 stolen bases and third in runs scored (64) among South Harrison players since 2003...12 stolen bases in 2009 fifth all-time in a single season since 2003...ended second since 2003 among seniors in triples (2) and fourth among seniors in runs (21) and stolen bases (12)...began season on six-game hit streak...went 2-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base in 8-5 win over Clay County...hit first career triple in 9-8 loss to Braxton County. Hit second career triple one day later in 9-8 win over

Roane County...scored two runs and stole a base in 7-0 sectional semifinal win over Doddridge County. Junior (2008): Set career highs in batting average (.477), on-base percentage (.556) and slugging percentage (.636) despite missing over two weeks due to mononucleosis and strep throat...average is second-best among South Harrison juniors over last six seasons and third best overall in last seven seasons...tied career-high with eight RBI...finished 9-of-11 on stolen base attempts...hit first career home run at Braxton County...finished 3-for-4 with a stolen base in 9-6 loss to Clay County...went a combined 5-for-6 in doubleheader sweep over Calhoun County...eight-game hitting streak ranks fourth among South Harrison players over last seven seasons. Sophomore (2007): Endured a breakout season in his first full season as a starter...saw time at nearly every infield position while mainly patrolling left field...led team with 25 runs scored, good enough for sixth-best among Harrison County hitters...26 hits ranks second among all South Harrison sophomores over the past seven seasons...led team in sacrifices (3), third-best in Harrison County... finished 2-for-2 in Hawks’ 5-4 upset over No.3 Williamstown...went 3-for-4 with three runs and two doubles in 18-3 win over Braxton County...scored three runs and two stolen bases in 11-1 win over Tygarts Valley...went 3-for-3 in 10-0 win over Calhoun County. travis GAWTHROP

4-year letterman | 4-year starter

Travis Gawthrop had a senior season most high school athletes only hope for. The senior set career-highs in nearly every pitching and hitting category including allowing just nine earned runs and five walks all season. At the plate, Gawthrop endured a breakout season, leading the team in hits while batting in the leadoff spot. The dominant right-hander became known for his ability to deliver in big games, especially after maintaining a one-run lead to help the Hawks’ earn only their second Regional Championship appearance in school history and giving up just one run in a complete game effort against Williamstown, giving South Harrison its first Little Kanawha Championship in the program’s history. He also drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning against Roane County to help give the Hawks their LKC Championship berth. He leaves as the school’s leader in appearances, innings pitched, wins, strikeouts and earned run average leader since the 2003 season. Gawthrop currently attends Potomac State Junior College in Keyser, W.Va., where he pitched one semester for head coach Doug Little and the 1995 Junior College champions Catamounts. tyler GOLDSMITH 3-year letterman

Considering the long layoff he had from baseball before the 2007 season, Tyler Goldsmith made more progress through his three seasons with the Hawks baseball program than most previously expected. Goldsmith appeared in 21 games with South Harrison where he saw action in the outfield and as a courtesy runner while also making his first career pitching appearance against Lewis County last season. It was more than just Goldsmith’s production on the field, however, as he became known for his ability to keep the team either loose or focused with whatever the situation called for – a trait learned from his combined seven seasons with the Hawks’ football and basketball teams. Goldsmith is currently employed by attended Potomac State College in Keyser, W.Va., for the Fall 2009 semester. SENIOR (2009): Hit first career double and drove in first career RBI with double to drive in game’s first run in 8-5 win over Clay County...made first career pitching appearance in 9-5 loss to Lewis County, going one inning and suffering the loss. freshman (2006): Did not play. Personal: Two-year member of South Harrison football team where played both offensive and defensive lines under head coach Brad Jett.

2-year letterman | 1-year starter

Cody Myers played baseball just two years under head coach Frank Tate. Judging by his senior season, however, Myers looked like an experienced veteran. In the 2009 season, Myers stepped up and developed into the Hawks’ No. 2 pitcher, tallying 21 innings and recording the second-lowest earned run average among South Harrison seniors since 2003. The workhorse appeared in 11 games last season, more than five times his career total entering the season, and once pitched in every game in a three-game stretch against Class-AA schools Lincoln, Braxton County and Roane County. Myers also provided a solid performance throughout the season at third base – a position of worry for the Hawks entering the season. SENIOR (2009): Earned All-Little Kanawha Conference Special Honorable Mention honors...ERA (2.00) was second-best among South Harrison seniors and fourth-best since 2003...11 appearances third most among seniors and fifth best in Coach Frank Tate era...hit first career double in 9-1 win over Williamstown...earned win in 8-3 victory over Williamstown, giving the Hawks the sweep...threw one shutout inning in 11-6 loss to St. Mary’s...pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing just two earned runs to pick up 8-5 win against Clay County...pitched on three consecutive days – Lincoln, Braxton, Roane (Game 2)...threw two hitless innings in 4-2 loss to Wirt County... pitched two scoreless innings in 14-5 win against Notre Dame in the Sectional Championship, including striking out the final batter of the game...received significant time on the mound and at third base for Clarksburg Post 13 American Legion Baseball in the summer. chase SNYDER

4-year letterman | 4-year starter

Chase Snyder ended his South Harrison baseball career as one of the most highlyrespected catchers in the program’s history. The four-year starter leaves as the Hawks’ leader in games played, at-bats, hits, doubles, triples and RBI in the head coach Frank Tate era and was just one of two Hawk players to play in 100 career games. He missed just one game in his career – one of only three South Harrison players to do so under Tate. The four-year starter was one of the most reliable batters under Tate and batted inside the top five spots in the order his entire career. But as solid as Snyder was at the plate, his true skill was behind it as his defensive skills and ability to call a game was frequently noticed by opposing coaches and allowed him to become the most feared defensive catcher in Harrison County. He was a four-year allHarrison County member, was selected to the Class-A All-State team three years and finished runner-up in the 2009 Little Kanawha Conference Player of the Year voting while also earning North-South All-Star Game honors. After receiving interest from Duquesne University, LaRoche College and West Virginia Wesleyan College, Snyder signed with Fairmont State University and head coach George Yanchak and is currently one of five catchers for the Falcons.
