NZ Idol’s Tranformation Former NZ Idol finalist Nikki Lee Carlson has spent the last seven years working out who she is. Reassured by the support around her, she is ready to tell the world and perform music again. “I’m on a journey at the moment to become as feminine as I can be – I don’t know yet where that will take me,” Nikki tells express when we met at a K’ Road café, looking very different from the handsome boy who had made it to the final’s of New Zealand Idol. Nikki started dressing as a girl in 2007. “It got to the point where I didn’t want to take it off.” She says. “I grew up wishing I was a girl. Now I’m being the girl I always wanted to be.” “When I first left the house dressed like this. It felt like a second life,” she tells us admitting she was unsure of the reaction she would receive. “Going into a shop or going out on the town – even straight men have been supportive – strangers have told me I’m ‘courageous’… I feel overwhelmed by the support and encouragement around me.” Still feeling connected to her masculine side, Nikki connects most with the rarely-used label of bi-gender, which falls under the transgender umbrella. Nikki says the liberation she has felt being herself and honouring her desires has made her feel stronger and more confident then ever. Currently working in retail, she is now keen to return to music. “Being on Idol got me about five years worth of gigs. After my dad passed away, I felt so lost and needed to re-evaluate my life.” Dressing up and working out who she was took over Nikki’s passion for music, but she would now like to gett back into the business, this time performing as the person she e truly is. “I sing a little differently now. When you present yourself ourself like this - you naturally choose more feminine songss and sing a little softer.”

Released from prison in 2011, Birch was not legally allowed to opperate a company until 2015. Revenge which is owned by Shortland St actor Rudi Vodanovich, closed in mid-March and was yet to reopen as express went to print.

New Transgender MP candidate Kelly Ellis has successfully beaten Winston Peters’ sister Lynette Stewart to become the Labour candidate for the Whangerei electorate. Her battles are not over as the trained lawyer will be competing for a seat that has been held by National for 39 years. “They don’t have an incumbent MP sitting,” Ellis says, suggesting that her and National’s Shane Reti are on a more even playing field than one many think. Reti may not be her only competition if rumours that Winston Peters will also compete for the seat are true. “If he does, he would suck up much of National’s grey vote – which would also work in my favour,” she tells us. gayexpress.co.nz

George Michael Reveals All While promoting his new album Symphonica, George Michael has participated in his first media interviews in five years. He opened up to magazine The Big Issue about his eight-week prison sentence, saying: “Jail wasn’t great. I just thought, get your head down and get on with it. It turned out to be easier than I was expecting because I knew I deserved to be there.” He said that in the aftermath he has ‘completely stopped’ using drugs and has remained clean for “well over a year-and-a-half.” In his next interview with the BBC he told them, “My gay life didn’t get easier when I came out. Quite the opposite happened, really.” Blaming the media for taking delight in destroying his ‘straight audience’. he also pinned part of the reason he stayed in the closet well into his thirties, on his relationship with his mother. “In the years when HIV was a killer, any parent of an openly gay person was terrified. I knew my mother well enough that she would spend every day praying that I didn’t come across that virus.”

Mr Gay NOT Hosting Sex Party 2014 title-holder Troy Williams is surprised his name has been used to promote a Muscle Sex Party at Auckland sex-on-site venue Lateshift. A sex party, taking place from 2-5pm on Easter Monday has been advertised using an image of Williams, claiming to be, ‘hosted by Mr Gay New Zealand’. Williams told express, “I work a shift at Lateshift on Friday and Saturday mornings… I’ve only done a couple of shifts but it’s been pretty good because it’s quiet, so I do my uni assignments.” He confirms that Lateshift’s owner-operator Jay Bennie had asked him to work at the party. “The whole conversation we had was, ‘we’re having a themed muscle party would you mind working that…’, then all of sudden I’m promoting or hosting the party... My boyfriend is completely pissed about it,” Williams explains, admitting he is concerned how community members may view the Mr Gay New Zealand title being linked to a sex party. “I can see people would take it the wrong way – particularly with the banner it’s been given, which again is different from what I understood the event was. It’s promoted as a sex party which I’m not happy with…” He says he will speak to Bennie about it when he returns from holiday after express has gone to print. “I don’t want to sideline him m by going around saying I never agreed to this, but we do need to have a conversation… I’m sure the party will still go ahead, but it won’t be me promoting it or tied to my name.” For more on this story visit www.gayexpress.co.nz. COMEDY

Queen of Camp Returns

Steven K A Out Brit comedian Steven K Amos on laughs, dinner and dancing. Who’s the funniest person you know and why? My mate Sean. He simply says it like it is, which in some situations can be belly achingly funny. In other instances, he should have thought twice. For me equally funny! What advice would you give to wannabe GLBTT comedians? Comedy audiences can be a tough crowd and you can’t take things too personally. To any comedian, gay or straight, you must try and find the truth in your story. It’s very important to find your own voice and although it’s great to be out and proud, does one’s sexuality define you?

Sitting just feet away from his shrine to Fanny the Wonder Dog, Julian Clary phones express to discuss the merits of finding a man. “It’s like visiting a very liberal and fairly inebriated friend,” says Julian of his return to New Zealand. His new show, Position Vacant, can truly claim to be a different experience every night because he relies so much on audience participation. “It’s my search for a husband. Each show I go into the audience and select ten men I like the look of and heard them into a sheep pen with a cattle prod. There are various elimination rounds, and in the end of the performance I marry the winner. In a rather touching ceremony with bridesmaids and confetti... I never get bored because I don’t know what they’re going to say or what I’m going to say… It’s always very dangerous!” The performance does not reflect reality. Clary has been in a settled relationship for ten years, but admits “my stage persona is that of a rampant homosexual!” He met his partner at a party on a yacht in Ibiza.

Ever the traditionalist, Julian recommends meeting a man on a night out. “There’s nothing like eyes yes across a room in a dark smoky club,” ub,” he concludes.“On Grindr, you can’t an’t smell the pheromones.” Perhaps on the app’s next update you can. Our interview concludes with Clary’s y’s recommendations for aspiring comedians. medians. “Find out what’s unique about you. u. For me it was all the things that were a problem oblem when I was in high school; my mannerisms, nnerisms, my voice, all turned out to be an asset for comedy. A rather sweet revenge!”” Julian Clary performs Position Vacant cant at 7.30pm, Sunday 27 April at the SkyCity yCity Theatre, Auckland. Tickets are $70 from www.ticketek.com or 0800 842 538. 8.

Who are your favourite gay comedians? I love Hannah Gadsby, Tom Ballard and one or two that I can’t name because they’re not out yet! If you could have a dinner party with any gay person living or dead – who would you invite? Oscar Wilde and Ellen DeGeneres, with music by the Village People. What club anthem, without fail, will get you on the dance floor? I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor. Auckland Theatre Company brings us Broadway hit Other Desert Cities, the latest play from brothers and sisters creator Jon Robin Baitz. Fresh out of rehearsal, Erin Fae caught up with Hera Dunleavy to discuss the upcoming show in which she is playing the part of Brooke Wyeth. “If people saw August: Osage County and liked that, Other Desert Cities is definitely in that vain: a family drama, American-style set at Christmas,” Hera explains. “It’s just really well written. There’s a fantastic part played by Elizabeth Hawthorne, [she’s] an ex-junkie who gets all the best lines! It’s just a fantastic mix of drama and family and it’s so nice that you can sit back and enjoy someone else’s dysfunctional family at a distance.” The play follows the story of Brooke Wyeth who after a six-year absence, comes to celebrate the festive season with her Republican

PARTY

Orange Tan / White Party This year celebrating it’s 25th anniversary; the White Party is an institution in the US that has influenced gay culture the world over. express caught up with Palm Springs organizer Jeff Sanker to find out more about the circuit party that tops all others. Buffed, bronzed, speedo clad and dressed only in white, partygoers will pile into the Palm Springs Renaissance Hotel for ‘The largest gay dance festival in the world.’ Jeff’s original inspiration for the party is almost comical, “the event originally started as a weekend getaway event for a lot of my LA friends.” He told express without the slightest hint of awareness of how OTT his lavish lifestyle is. Every year the party got bigger, attracting increasing numbers of international guests. Similar parties in the US and indeed the world began to appear, often on dates selected so party-goers could travel from one on to the next; and the gay circuit party scene was born. “I think imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” he tells us. “Now there are White Party-styled events not only in a few other states here in the US, but around the world in 36 countries. All the gay cruises also have some type of White Party themed event.” Jeff’s success was even being honoured last month with him being inducted into the Palm Springs ‘Walk of Stars’ where he joined the likes of Leberace, Bob Hope and numerous former US gayexpress.co.nz

Presidents. He admits the parties have come a long way from an era where sexual preference was not talked about. “Many had to attend secretly for fear of losing their jobs if someone found out - especially members of the US Military. Now they are able to attend freely and openly.” Over the years the parties have secured impressive line-ups of including the liked of Grace Jones, Boy George and Ke$ha. Jeff admits to having favourites, selecting

Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga, who has played the event twice. He assures us that all the celebs who attend behave badly! “One year we had a performer running down the halls naked, chasing boys everywhere.”

The White Party 2014 Friday 25 April – Sunday April 27 Tickets: www.jeffreysankertickets. com Article | Oliver Hall

If he could get anyone Jeff says his dream line-up would be Cher, Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Mariah Carey and Britney Spears. Hyping this year’s anniversary by adding, “maybe we might even possibly have something like that this year!”

OPINION

I Now Pronounce You… More Equal relationships are equal, but some are more equal than others. I eschew marriage not because I don’t love my partner, but because civil union gave us an opportunity to define a relationship on our own terms; it did not come tarnished with the history of marriage through the ages. I like being part of the new generation where the old rules don’t apply and the institution is modern, fresh and unencumbered.

Why Vaughan Meneses doesn’t put a ring on it. Now anyone can get married and the queer marriage is no less valid than the other kind, and that is kinda cool. But to my mind only kinda. You see, I have no intention of getting married, as I am perfectly happy in my civil union. It’s just that now I have to defend my relationship choice to those who think I should automatically want to ‘upgrade’ to a marriage. It must be even worse for those choosing not to legally formalise their relationship in any way. I mean, now that we can get married, why wouldn’t we want to? After all everyone wants the same thing, right? Marriage, of course, has its roots in property rights and the ownership and control of women. For some that is still a sad truth. Luckily for us it has evolved a little into something more civilized; in our part of the world anyway. No longer is a marriage synonymous with the ball and chain of possession, like slavery. Today it is seen as a reasonable way of defining a civil connection betwe two people, between altho although in the minds of some it is still some kind re of religious stamp of appr approval, coming back full-cir full-circle to the masterservan arrangement of servant olden olde days. If I have to hear

14 | April 2014 |

I celebrate relationships in all of their forms and the people who enter them have their own reasons for defining them in the way that feels right for them. I don’t want to end up with hierarchy of relationships in our community, where some are perceived to be more valid than others and I don’t want to throw stones at anyone’s glass house.

another lecture encouraging me to have my relationship validated by marriage, I may just have to do the ‘Wellington walk’ and step out on Manners Street directly into the path of a big yellow bus. My relationship is awesome just as it is, thank you. Stop telling me it needs an upgrade. Stop asking me why I “don’t want to be married?” My mum was married; four times. Ain’t nobody got time for that! You see, I never actually felt particularly less equal when I couldn’t get married. I crossed that bridge in 1993 with the passing of the Human Rights Amendment Act. I do hasten to add, however,

that I think the recent ability to allow marriage between any two consenting adults is a good step; it’s just that I don’t feel we should feel obligated to race towards it as if it is the holy grail of relationships. It isn’t. Isn’t the point of equality and freedom though, just that? Equality and freedom. I’m happy with civil union, I know plenty of others who are happy living “in sin” and I know plenty more who are happy flying solo. My fear however is that like the characters in Animal Farm we may be in the throes of a quiet revolution within our community where all

So as we celebrate the ability to marry, let’s not lose our freedom to choose other configurations. Many fought hard and long for the moment where the last bastions of disenfranchisement fell to the ground, but their struggle had never been for sameness; it was for equity. Let’s not become the kind of people we once fought against. Let’s make sure that in our communities we fight to keep the barriers down forever and not create hierarchies of straw that we will one day need to pull down. Let equal be equal, everywhere and for all. Marriage is not the pinnacle of relationships; it is merely another expression of one; no less valid, beautiful, meaningful or more important than any other. gayexpress.co.nz

Equality, Family & Love

LOVE & MARRIAGE

Three fabulous reasons that Rob Sykes and Vinnue MacBride-Stewart tied the knot. To mark the anniversary of parliament passing the marriage equality bill express brings you our most lavish wedding feature ever. It was apparent when they met that Rob (pictured in maroon) and Vinnie (in grey) had a fair bit in common. Both the youngest children from deeply religious families (Vinnie’s catholic, Rob’s Mormon), both worked in the corporate world, both were the same age. But when Vinnie first opened his NZdating messages to see a simple, ‘Cute pic bro,’ from Rob who would have known that eight years on they would be happily married husbands. “He was one of the few people I met who had credit to text me back,” jokes Vinnie, who admits, “Though neither of us were looking for anything serious, we were seriously dating within about a week. When you least expect things, wonderful things happen.” When they met for the first time on the second of January, Rob was impressed that when talking about his children (a son and a daughter, now respectively aged 12 and 14), Vinnie wasn’t scared off. “I learnt to trust others with my babies as Vinnie became a part of their life,” Rob tells us. Sadly being a parent in a same-sex relationship is still not easy, Rob describes an incident where his son was bullied because of his two dads as, ‘heartbreaking’. “All we

want is for them to feel that our modern family is normal and that they are loved.” He says, assuring us that his son, “came through it strong, and is a beautiful young man.” With the motivations of building a secure family structure, and being head-over-heels in love, Vinnie maxed out his credit cards to buy a diamond ring, took Rob for fish and chips on the beach at Mission Bay and proposed. “Shaking with nerves, I asked Rob if he would spend the rest of his life with me.” Vinnie remembers. “It took him an hour or so to stop crying after he had said yes!” Ten months of planning and thousands of dollars later, the two were ‘Civil-Unionised’ with a 95-guest ceremony in the same spot on the beach that Vinnie had proposed, followed by a reception at the Ponsonby’s Old Fire Station on Williamson Avenue. As Louisa Wall’s Marriage Equality bill made it into parliament, Rob and Vinnie put forward passionate submissions including a deeply personal oral submission, where Vinnie spoke of some of the horrendous scars inequality had given members of our community. When the bill passed Rob decided it was his turn to propose six years after the first proposal and chose the lucky second (the same date they met, proposed and civilly unionised on) as the day to do it. Recruiting Rob’s best friend Tania to assist, he got her to call Vinnie to say her car had broken down at Mission Bay and she needed his help.

“When I got there I could not see Tania. I kept on ringing... She kept on hanging up on me,” Vinnie explains. “I looked over at the beach, and saw Rob. We were in tears; he got down on one knee and proposed. Tania was hiding in the bushes taking photos.” Three months later Rob began to experience long-lasting headaches. Eventually an acoustic MRI uncovered a foreign mass in the right hand side of his brain, which specialists diagnosed as a tumour. Despite being devastated by the news, the couple affirmed to remain as positive, focusing on the fact: the tumour had been found early, was slow growing and was located in a part of the brain that is least used. Rob tells us,“I don’t underestimate

the seriousness of it. It is not curable. They will operate to get as much of it out as possible.”Through the ordeal he describes Vinnie as his rock. “He even had to tell our babies. I couldn’t do it myself.” He says solemnly. “He has helped me to feel loved, protected and safe. [But] I know it’s been tough on him.”

Penny Ashton, who they had met through mutual friends. “[She] pulled together a heartfelt, honest, witty and love filled ceremony that shared the love we have for each other and for our babies, and the respect we have for our parents who were right there at our sides regardless of religious belief.”

“This is one of the many things that has come into our lives that is a challenge to overcome. Every time we face something like this our love grows stronger, and we become even closer… this tumour simply makes us realise how much we need and love each other.”

The reception that followed saw the boys enter to Jason Te Mete singing John Legend’s So High, followed by performances from drag queens Buckwheat and Tess Tickle to the 200 guests. Vinnie presented Rob with the Korowai (feather cloak) that his nieces and nephews had lovingly made without his knowledge to show how much Mana (strength) he has.

The ceremony, once again on Mission Bay beach, was made up of just 12: the grooms, their best friends, their children and parents. As with their Civil Union, it was overseen by celebrant

LOVE & MARRIAGE

A Fairytale Setting for Versatile Weddings Every dream wedding, needs a dream wedding venue. express peruses Auckland gem Highwic. Highwic – the stately home in Newmarket cared for by the NZ Historic Places Trust – is developing a reputation for its glittering fairytale same-sex weddings and civil unions. The 152-year-old mansion doubles as both revered heritage icon and ‘venue with verve’ for glam gay couples tying the knot, according to Highwic’s Visitor Services Coordinator, Christiane Pracht. “The first thing people understand about Highwic when they come and visit us is its flexibility. We can do everything from ‘venerable’ to ‘vixen’ – and every ‘v’ in between,” says Christiane. “We are Victorian – but we are also versatile!” Additional selling points include Highwic’s authentic Ballroom, a Billiard House that seats 60 people for formal dining – and room for a marquee. All within a floral bouquet’s throw of Newmarket’s premier shopping spots and restaurants. “Highwic really has a lot to offer our clients. Where else can guests enjoy cocktails and a game of croquet in the garden before coming inside and experiencing the kauri panelling, Victorian antiques and original artwork of the Ballroom?” “Or what about letting rip with your music and light show in a marquee on the lawn?” she says. As well as years of experience in weddings and functions, Highwic staff are GLBTT friendly, professional and always up for a challenge.

Thanks to an extensive programme of restoration and repainting last year, Highwic is looking better than ever. It also offers on-site parking and close proximity to public transport. “And of course people are not just limited to our opening hours. Highwic is available for functions any day of the week – and people can rock until midnight.” Highwic is open 10.30am-4.30pm on Wednesdays to Sunday or by prior appointment. EXHIBITION

A Moving Display

In ‘30’, his second exhibition as Film Archive Curator-at-Large, Gareth Watkins reflects on the history of HIV AIDS in New Zealand. The first death of a person in New Zealand with an AIDS related illness was in 1984 when a young man returned from overseas to his home in New Plymouth. In 1986 a paper was published in the New Zealand Medical Journal that described the first 11 patients with AIDS to be treated at Auckland Hospital. Over half died within 13 months of diagnosis. All were homosexual males, aged between 28 and 43. The exhibition’s title not only marks the 30th anniversary of the first death in New Zealand, but it also highlights the age group that many of these gay men were in, when they passed away. “I didn’t come out until the early 1990s and so this exhibition helps me understand some of our shared history,” says Watkins. “Shared – in that when I was going through high school, AIDS and homosexuality were [though to be] intertwined.

28 | April 2014 |

There was a ‘joke’, ‘What does gay stand for? Got AIDS Yet’. That’s how many people saw it. It was one of my parent’s biggest fears of my coming out… Re-enforced in school when the only mention of homosexuality was in health classes where we learnt about STIs and AIDS.” The exhibition is made up of seven screens; each randomly displaying themed sequences: remembrance, media coverage, artistic responses, stigma, self-esteem, treatment, prevention and individuals and communities affected. “I thought it was particularly important to have a sequence relating to self-esteem; as this is still a factor in risk-taking behaviours. A sense of worthlessness and isolation are feelings shared by many marginalised people. The Hero Festival, established by Rex Halliday in the early 1990s, began to tackle these issues within rainbow communities.” “It was also important to highlight the stigma surrounding HIV AIDS and how that continues to

have a negative effect on the day-to-day lives of many people.” “In addition to the achieval footage, the New Zealand AIDS Memorial Quilt has generously allowed us to display five quilt panels,” says Watkins. “These panels are living memorials created by family, friends and groups to acknowledge those that have passed. It is incredibly special to have them with us for the duration of the exhibition.” 30 opens 6.30pm Tuesday 15 April at the New Zealand Film Archieve, 84 Taranaki St, Te Aro, Wellington, with a screening of 30 significant HIV AIDS moments from the Film Archive collection, followed by a reception. 30 will be exhibited until Saturday 14 June. HOTTIE OF THE MONTH

Taylor Momsen Tayor is the reason we all love a good girl gone bad. The 20 year old started her career as a movie actress, before becoming Jenny Humphrey on the bitchy series Gossip Girl. Jump forward five years, Taylor has left acting behind and become a fully-fledged member of the church of rock and roll. Her band, The Pretty Reckless have just released their second album Going To Hell. Having toured with the likes of Marilyn Manson and Evanescence, Taylor can rock out with the best of them. Her rock’n’roll looks have also scored her gigs as the face of Galliano, UK high-street staple New Look and Madonna’s Material Girl fashion line. Now guess where that crucifix ends?

MUSIC

The Future Lordes Five New Zealand musicians who’s band wagon you should immediately jump on. Indi 19 year old Indira Force has also had the honour of opening for Lorde, as lead singer of electronictrip band Doprah. Not content with dominating alternative radio charts with the band, her solo work sees her collaborate with NZ music darling, Lorde-producer Joel Little. Two musical projects, both going places very fast. https://soundcloud.com/indycloud

Young Hellions As ex-Cat Venom band-mate Zowie fades from the pop-music scene, her former band-mate, Maeve Munro steps into the spotlight with her solo project, Young Hellions. Blessed with solid reviews (from infamous website The Corner, no less) and songs getting to apathy-inducing levels of rotation on alternative radio, her selftitled EP is out now through MUZAI Records. http://www.facebook. com/younghellions

Randa He played Big Day Out earlier this year, has been nominated for a VNZMA for his video “Frankenstein” (produced by fantastic beat-maker Totems) and seems to be the ‘cause celebre’ regarding raps no longer having lengthy verses! Trans rapper Randa’s rhymes allude to pop culture, specifically the nineties which conjure up more nostalgia than seeing a boxed set of Friends at a car boot sale. Check out his latest releases ‘Cosby Kid’ and Dan Aux collaboration ‘Kelly Bundy’. http://www.larzranda.com

Yumi Zouma Remember (Charlie Ryder’s) Bang! Bang! Eche! or (Josh Burgess’) Sleepy Age? No? Then go back and start there before jumping on the coat tails of their new band. Yumi Zouma’s debut EP has already featured on buzz blogs such as Gorilla Vs. Bear, Brooklyn Vegan and Stereogum. REVIEW

The Toast of Queenstown The Public Kitchen and Bar in Queenstown is arguably the most beautiful location for a restaurant in New Zealand. Located on Steamer Wharf, the Public is a cool, casual and trendy spot highlighted by its outdoor section, with its incredible views of the Remarkables. The menu is extensive and offers some unusual selections. We started with lamb koftas ($24) which were suitably moist and delicious. The cod croquettes were hot and slightly gooey ($15) and Marty’s hand-made sausage and lentil sauce ($16) was rich and satisfying. For dessert we loved the massive serving of trifle ($14) with limoncello

and finished with summer berries. The wine and beverage list is extensive and the pricing is surprisingly moderate. Our server Lucy was terrific. In a city where service can be hit or miss. She had a great energy and seemed to really care about making sure we were having a good time. The Public Kitchen and bar is exactly the sort of restaurant Queenstown has been aching for; casual and relaxed, but also offering smart food and the best views in the city. Buono Gustoso!

We’re sad to see the end of long, warm summer days but are consoling ourselves in the fact that soon we’ll have an excuse (like we need one!) to go to Xi’an Noodle Bar and have one of our favourite Auckland winter dishes – hand-pulled ‘biangbiang’ noodles with spicy braised pork. One of the best $9.50 you’ll ever spend in this fair city. Xi’an Noodle Bar 242a Dominion Rd Mt Eden (also branches in Mt Albert, the CBD, New Lynn and Panmure)

Recently opened Gusto at the Grand is the talk of the town, and it’s no wonder really. The food is sublime and it’s a beautifully fittedout space in the Sky City Grand Hotel (is there anywhere to dine but Federal Street these days?) Chef, Sean Connolly, has come up with a fabulous Italian menu and after a ‘Chef’s Table’ experience with the man himself we can highly recommend the house-made ricotta drizzled with honey and pine nuts, melt-in-the-mouth Sardinian ravioli, crumbed veal cutlet, radicchio, orange, shaved fennel salad, kingfish tail saltimbocca and (of course) his famous duck fat potatoes. If you have space, his signature dessert Rum Baba ‘1835’ will make you think you’ve died and gone to heaven. Show Us Your Meat We’ve long been fans of Salash Delicatessen’s incredible cured meats and sausages so are beyond excited to hear they now have their own retail space in Auckland’s Victoria Park Market. It’s a great traditional-looking delicatessen with their entire product plus cheeses and other delights. Even better, if you pop in at lunchtime you can grab one of their sausages or top quality pork or beef, cooked and served in beautiful artisan bread with salad and sauces. They have also branched out into fresh product; their aged marinated eye fillet has to be tasted to be believed. Salash Delicatessen, Victoria Park Market, Auckland www.salash.co.nz

Fri 21 March. Photos | Evan Donnelly express arrived at Poof in style - on the Pink Bus! The only way to travel the Daffney Bush hosted bus has been getting busier and busier. It’s your free link between Family and Poof. Daffney had been unsure what to wear (a rare occasion) so opted for her (pictured) Poofthemed onesy! She is being held up by the appropriately names Hans!

Rugby & Drag! Sat 22 March. Photos | Evan Donnelly Family was packed to the rafters this Saturday. Ribena was out in full regalia showing Wellington drag friends what gay Auckland is all about! The NZ Falcons rugby team had flocked there following their end of season drinks. Everyone cut shapes on the newly refurbished dance-floor until the wee small hours. The Canadian tourists who had just one night in Auckland before touring the rest of the country – wished they could have stayed longer.
