FILM

The Cream of Our Crop – GLBT Picks from the International Film Festival With the Outtakes Film Festival taking a break this year, the New Zealand International Film Festival has stepped up with a huge line up of GLBT features. Here are some of express’ favourites:

Villani explains his struggle with his father (an ex-military man unable to accept that his son is gay or that he could ever make a living playing the piano), before scaling one of the summits of Rachmaninoff’s romantic repertoire.

54: The Director’s Cut

Duke of Burgundy

Seen at last in next-to-original form, Mark Christopher’s 1998 movie plugs us into late-70s discorama at its most delirious. Ryan Phillippe, 22 and shirtless in virtually every scene, is the starstruck Jersey studmuffin who becomes a busboy – delivering drugs and sexual services – at Manhattan’s legendary Studio 54. Alas, it was all too deviant for producer Harvey Weinstein. He cut 40 minutes and ordered reshoots, eliminating the hero’s bisexuality, toning down his amorality and creating a redemptive romance starring actress Neve Campbell. Now, Miramax has funded him to reinstate the tasty bits, not to mention the narrative arc, and treat us to the tragicomic celebration of pre-HIV decadence he always had in mind.

Crossing Rachmaninoff

Timothy Conigrave’s memoir, Holding the Man, is a love story for the ages, and this film honours it beautifully. Conigrave met John Caleo when they were teenagers at Xavier College in Melbourne in the 1970s. Tim was an aspiring actor. John was captain of the football team. Their romance lasted 15 years. John died at 33 from AIDS related illnesses. Forbidden by the Caleo family to speak at his lover’s funeral, Tim ensured through his memoir that the world would know the depth of tenderness they shared.

Tangerine

Leading ladies Sidse Babett Knudsen and Chiara D’Anna star as lovers locked in a game of mistress and servant in the opulently fetishistic Duke of Burgundy. This arty noir was inspired by European soft-core porn of the 1970s and makes 50 Shades Of Grey looks like weak cordial.

Grandma

This World Premiere is a portrait of Italianborn Auckland concert pianist Flavio Villani as he returns like the prodigal son to Italy for his concert debut. In this food-filled homecoming.

Holding The Man

The role GLBT activist Lily Tomlin was born to play. She stars as Ellie, a sharp-tongued lesbian grandmother, who needs to help raise $630 for her pregnant teenage granddaughter in this comedy-drama from About a Boy director Paul Weitz. A great supporting cast includes Marcia Gay Harden as her uptight daughter and Lavern Cox as her tatoo artist, but there’s no doubt this is Tomlin’s vehicle that could finally take her to Oscar success.

Shot on an iPhone5S, this R-rated comedy storms the streets, doughnut shops, brothels and clubs of West Hollywood on Christymas Eve as two transgirl prostitute BFFs Sin-Dee Rella (Kiki Kitana Rodriguez) and Alexandra (May Taylor) go on the hunt to ‘Chris Brown’ “Some white bitch’ (like a real bitch, “Like vagina and everything”) who has done them wrong. Tangerine is not to be missed! The New Zealand International Film Festival runs from Thursday 16 July to Sunday 2 August. For bookings and more information visit www.nziff.co.nz. Lucinda Bennett chats with Artspace’s new director Misal Adnan Yildiz. There is a common feeling in New Zealand that one must leave to see the world, as though New Zealand is not really part of the world. It has become so normal to jet off for years at a time that I can use the acronym OE and not even have to explain it to you. Misal Adnan YÄąldÄąz has made the opposite journey. Born in Anatolia, YÄąldÄąz has lived in Istanbul, Berlin, Stockholm and Stuttgart. At the end of 2014, YÄąldÄąz arrived in Auckland as the new director of Artspace. When asked why he came to Auckland, YÄąldÄąz is frank. “I was over living in Europe. I was 35 and I thought, if I don’t make this move I never will. I was never that person to go to India for six 10 | July 2015 |

months and you don’t hear about me. I think you have to do these strong contextual shifts in your life; it makes your life more interesting.â€? Fittingly, YÄąldÄąz’s inaugural exhibition at Artspace was titled 'On The Moment of Change there is Always a New Threshold of Imagination'. The show was experimental and ever-evolving, encouraging both Artspace and its audience to rethink their Auckland context and imagine an unknown landscape. I ask YÄąldÄąz if he had a specific vision for Artspace when he arrived: “In my head, of course, there is a universal model of how any public institution dedicated to art can, should, will operate, but there is also some work to do in terms of how you localize this model in a new context. I didn’t have an immediate vision for Artspace, I invited people to think about, demand,

create and invite change. I propose to make change collectively.â€? In accordance with this, posters for the show were created through open workshops, research documents were installed at local beaches, the Artspace Reading Room was transplanted into the middle of the main gallery, and for the first time in its 27 years of history, Artspace was part of the Pride Parade. “I believe Pride festivals are not just for GLBTIQ communities. I would love to see more diversity, more Asian and Pacific culture‌ the gay and lesbian revolution brings liberation not only for themselves but for the politics of representation it is a moment for a lot of people. If you are a non-profit institution on K Rd you have to respond to this public moment.â€? gayexpress.co.nz

Talking with Yıldız, it is immediately clear that he is far more interested in the people of Auckland than the place. He tells me this is always true, for every city he has been in: “We all have our own way of understanding context, what is interesting is the human factor… food and nature is great and it can surprise you, but I think trying to understand people… I would never give it up. It is the most interesting thing for me.” Naturally, I am curious about his observations and understanding of Aucklanders, especially our gay community. “What I would love to do about this Auckland experience is write a novel. I would call it something like ‘I still don’t get it’! I haven’t experienced the gay scene here that

much, I’m still working on it, but what I can say is, it’s very small but its diverse, it’s very thoughtful and it’s considered and there is space for everybody… but guys are complicated!” In the seven months Yıldız has been at Artspace, he has already shown a lot of explicit material including video works by Fancy Violence (the cross-dressing alter-ego of painter Rodolpho Parigi), and multiple photographs of penises by a young Billy Apple. “Our education intern needed to readjust her programme around the fact that ever since I started there have been dicks installed as images in the exhibition, explicit material! I think people were surprised to see works from a young Billy Apple. They might think that they know his practice but actually he managed to

surprise them. My motto is: if you can’t surprise yourself, then you can’t surprise your audience”. Perhaps Yıldız means people were just surprised to see Billy Apple dick pics at Artspace while his highly reputable retrospective ran at Auckland Art Gallery. But I suspect his comment means more, that he has understood our insecurities and idiosyncrasies, that he gets us Aucklanders better than he thinks. A Solo exhibition by Polish born, London and Hong Kong based artist Marysia Lewandowska as part of the exhibition series “Singular Pluralities ∞ Plural Singularities”is on now at Artspace July 17 – August 22. The TT was a huge milestone for Audi launching into the modern coupé market and pushing the brand into a new direction. With the name TT deriving from a successful motor race, this car was built to be fun! Sporty is an easy word to describe this car. The model driven is a 2015 Audi TT S-line. Up front you have a dynamic 2000cc Turbo engine creating an exciting 370Nm of torque

and 169kW. The heart pulsating intake noise this engine creates when opened up is truly astounding. After collecting the TT from Continental Cars in Newmarket I couldn’t wait to go show off this sexy machine. With Audi Drive Select you can tailor the vehicles performance and handling to every situation. There are four pre-set modes Auto, Efficiency, Comfort, and Dynamic with each mode changing the way the car responds. For the control freaks in the audience there is also a custom mode you can program to take different aspects of each setting and create a driving profile all of your own. I really enjoy this car! At first I was all pedal down and damn, this girl can move! But by day two I was really starting to notice all the people staring at me, I was feeling super-hot… I realised soon it was the car people were staring at, but

I’m going to claim hot by association. If sporty and sexy isn't enough for you and you want something a little more sophisticated then no worries, Audi have got that covered, the 2015 TT is the first Audi to be released with a virtual cockpit. This is futuristic, full screen LCD digital dash technology which displays all the usual’s, like vehicle speed and engine RPM but can also be customised to show live vehicle data, 3D maps, incoming calls, and of course which Madonna track you are streaming from your phone via Bluetooth. This completely re-designed car is really something to write home about, inside and out. You can’t be disappointed. Make time in your schedule to drive this car! Article | Robert Adams.

WINTER ACTIVITIES

Make The Most of Winter Don’t hide away in doors. Get there and experience everything this magical season has to offer. express Express explores explores the the coolest coolest options options for for the the cold cold months. months.

Hit The Slopes at Gay Ski Week From Saturday 29 August Queenstown will be gayer than ever as Gay Ski Week explodes with colourful daily events and options to party into the wee small hours every night! “The atmosphere on the mountain is awesome. We met one of our best mates on the chair lift in our second year.” Gay Ski Week QT regular Tim McTigue told express. “We go back most years as a group with 5 or 6 others. I can’t recommend the week enough.” To Ski or to Snow Board, That is the Question! “Try both if you can, it may surprise you what you're good at,” Gay Ski Week QT aficionado Vicky Sefton tells us. She tried a one-day starter pack option for both sports, which she says was great value for money. “I've ridden a skateboard for years so assumed I would be better at snowboarding but it's actually turned out that I'm better at skiing… [Both] are good for fitness too! Ever wanted thighs of steel?!” She giggles. 14 | July 2015 |

Vicky admits there are technicalities to both sports that will suit different people. “It takes a few tries to get confident on a snowboard but once you've mastered the basics progression is pretty swift unlike skiing where often the progression at the beginning is pretty fast and then it tapers off leaving many people competent skiers with not so great style… I personally prefer skiing over boarding because I feel more in control on a black run than I do on a board. If you can do both then you can choose the best ride for the conditions on that day - skis are better in icy conditions, boards are better in fresh snow.” Despite swinging for skiing Vicky definitely sees the advantages for sole boarders. “I'm less worried about my knees when snowboarding, which means I'll take more risks when trying new things. On skis that can be a bit scary as there's always the risk of tearing a knee ligament when your legs end up in opposite directions.” And most importantly, “Snowboarding is just cool, there's no doubt about it and you feel cool when doing it, big lazy sweeping arcs and no poles

getting in the way so it's a very free feeling motion.” And when you’re not feeling ‘cool’ on the slopes Gay Ski Week QT has so many more Winter Activities to experience! The More FM Opening Party at funky popup bar The Find is always a fab way to introduce yourself to the other hot ski bunnies, but we warn you – don’t go too hard at this one, because you’ve still got a week full of parties to get through and the next night you’re going to be getting very wet (dramatic pause) at the LYC Wet & Wild Foam Party at Loco Cantina. Just when you know you can’t handle another hangover, you can chill out and test your brain cells rather than destroy them at the Durex Queer Quiz Night at The Ballarat Trading Company. gayexpress.co.nz

WINTER ACTIVITIES

After that calm evening, you can be looking your best at Highlands Hook Up Adventure Day where you can experience the speediest speed date of your life, hurtling around a racing track in a Porsche Cayenne, heading off into the sunset in a go-kart! It will be like an episode of the Bachelor on steroids. The following night will give the opportunity for quieter romance as you enjoy a five-course degustation menu at The Rees Hotel for the True South Dining Experience, with matching wines. The Caluzzi Girls will bring their brand of Auckland drag to Queenstown the following evening at the Gibbston Valley Cabaret Night at the Skyline Gondola, which boasts fabulous views. The legendary Skycity Queenstown Karaoke event is always bustling, but save some energy (and voice) for The Family Bar and Night Club ‘Life Is A Beach’ party the next night. Their pool party last year was one of the wildest of the week and with Adam Love DJing this beach party, we expect much of the same.

Closing the week is Broken Shed’s Once Upon A Time Dance Party. Mark our words – get your costume now! There are no half measures in the South Island and everyone will dress up as their favourite fairytale. An enchanting closing night is guaranteed. Gay Ski Week NZ are also running parties in the same week. These kick off with a Break The Ice party at host hotel the Crown Plaza on Saturday 29 August. Skate Party takes over the Ice Arena on Monday 31 August. Followed by a VIP Degustation Dinner at acclaimed eatery Gantley’s on the Tuesday. Join Our Great Gay Rugby Team – The Falcons he was “looking to get back into team sport… The fundamentals of the Falcons are that we are a gay and inclusive team. There is a lot more social bonding than there might be with other teams.” Karl Wishier, age 24, joined the Falcons in 2014 having never played a game of rugby before. “I just had a friend who was a ref who dragged me along for a practice.” Karl has been playing ever since.

)DOFRQV -HUHP\ %UDQNLQ DQG .DUO :LVKLHU

Since the Falcons creation in 2013, the team has gone from strength to strength. The past two years have seen membership grow as well as public interest and community support. Last year the team competed at the Bingham Cup in Sydney, playing six games of rugby over three days and winning the Bowl final – not bad for a team that was competing in the tournament for the first time. Jeremy Brankin was a part of the group that got the Falcons going in 2013. He tells express that

16 | July 2015 |

He says the socialising that the team provides in addition to the game was a big incentive for him. “To me it’s a combination of a great social scene and also I can’t think of a bigger challenge as far as a sport goes. It’s incredibly rewarding getting through every game.” Karl says there are a number of players in the team who have never played rugby before, so inexperience in the game should be no barrier to joining. The Falcons play in a social grade, which Karl says is a good mix given the range of experience within the playing group. “It’s still incredibly challenging at that level.” Following on from their success at last year’s Bingham Cup, the Falcons will be hosting the The Purchas Cup in September where they will be up against some of the most competitive teams on the Australian gay rugby scene.

“Gay rugby is certainly on the rise within our community, especially after the first Bingham Cup.” Karl says, with the team’s success in Sydney generating more interest than ever before. “I’m really encouraged to see the people who join and stay.” Sam Learmonth says that he really wanted to play rugby at school, but for a number of reasons didn’t. “I’d played lots of other sports, but not rugby. I think it combines a good physical game and a really great team sport. It’s quite unique in Kiwi culture.” When he was invited to try it out, he said he felt the Falcons was a team where, “he could be himself.” He also notes an increase in his fitness level since starting with the team. The Falcons also run two touch teams, with one in summer and one in winter, so those wanting to play a less intense version of the game can participate. Sam says that the age range of the group is from those in their early twenties through to late thirties. Thinking of getting involved? Sam says, “Come down and give it a go. It’s a really great bunch of supportive guys that are more than happy to show you the ropes.” Jeremy agrees and says those interested should come down and watch a game on Saturday and put aside how they may have been treated in the past with other rugby teams, “If people had been hesitant in the past because they thought being gay was an issue, this is the team for you!” Anyone keen to join the team should visit www.nzfalcons.org.nz for more details or email nzfalcons@gmail.com. Find Warmth in Art & Culture and then the Regent Theatre from 1930 to 1970. Film will once again be at its heart as the Len Lye Centre incorporates a 62 seat cinema designed to present Lye's films to their best advantage and offer audiences the opportunity to rediscover the filmmaker's landmark works that pioneered innovation in film, media and art. The programme will pay particular attention to film innovation exploring experimental film, while also showcasing the complementary work of other national and international filmmakers and timebased artists.

New Plymouth is set to become New Zealand’s hub of contemporary art with the relaunch of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and opening of the Len Lye Centre. The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Zealand’s first and only museum of contemporary art, reopens this month with the brand new architectural addition of the Len Lye Centre – New Zealand’s first institution dedicated to a single artist; the pioneering filmmaker and kinetic sculptor, Len Lye. With its curved exterior walls of mirror-like stainless steel, the Len Lye Centre is set to be one of the country’s most iconic buildings. Inspired by the movement of light in Lye's sculptural and film work, Patterson Associates Ltd building design is deeply influenced by the life, ideas, writings and work of Len Lye. Forging with Lye’s belief that, “great architecture goes fifty-fifty with great art.” Len Lye (1901-1980) was a visionary pioneer of film and one of the most important and influential artists to emerge from New Zealand. Legendary among experimental filmmakers, his 18 | July 2015 |

'direct films' made by painting and scratching on celluloid were part of Lye's prescient vision for a new 'art of movement'. His dynamic and innovative motorised stainless steel sculptures of the 1960s express a creative energy that Lye also brought to film, painting, photography and poetry. Lye chose to make Taranaki the home of his works with a vision of making it, “the swingiest art gallery of the Antipodes.” Since 1980 the GovettBrewster Art Gallery, Len Lye (1901-1980). has housed and cared for the Len Lye Collection and Archive, in partnership with the Len Lye Foundation.

Relaunching on Saturday 25 July the opening exhibitions will include: "Len Lye: Four Fountains" in the new Large Works Gallery. Len Lye’s kinetic masterpiece, Trilogy (A Flip and Two Twisters) – a frenzy of movement and light designed for the Govett-Brewster’s highest gallery; and Our Hearts of Darkness, which charts the way that violence is embedded within NZ's identity. From 25 July, the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/ Len Lye Centre wil be open 6 days a week (closed Tuesdays) at 42 Queen Street, New Plymouth. Entry is free. Must See Home Grown Shows The cutting edge of kiwi theatre will be on display in Auckland this month as two modern hybrid shows tell tales of human connection.

while you still can. It lands at the Edinburgh festival this August and is likely to be inundated with international touring offers soon after.

K’ Rd Strip – A Place to Stand examines the ‘history and the tales of the misfits who roamed in and out of the shadows up the infamous strip!’ The show which enjoyed 21 sold-out shows in 2013 will return to Auckland for six nights before hitting Hamilton and Rotorua.

Another show that looks set to be a must see is The Deliberate Disappearance of My Friend, Jack Hartnett, performed by Westside star Todd Emerson with a live band.

. 5G 6WULS

A multi-faceted, collaborative dance theatre piece, expect beautiful boys, ancient Māori mythology, entwined with contemporary dance, theatre, haka, drag and live vocals. Sexy, provocative and humorous, K’ Rd Strip flows as a stream of consciousness, set against a backdrop of New Zealand music including Gin Wigmore, Crowded House and Split Enz. express recommends seeing this unique kiwi show gayexpress.co.nz

Jack Hartnett is the second production from the Bullet Heart Club, who produced last years enormously successful Daffodils. “The central idea behind Jack Hartnett is that you can never truly know anyone. We all have the power and potential to do anything and be anyone. In the story of Jack Hartnett, we follow two men that are desperate for human connection and self-fullfilment through the manipulation of others.” Co-director of Bullet Heart Club Kitan Petkovski tells us. The pressure is on for Bullet Heart Club after the success of Daffodils lead Auckland monthly Metro to brand them, ‘the most exciting new company to arrive in Auckland.’ “We were absolutely chuffed by Metro’s comment and by all the reviews for Daffodils...With our second show, we hope to open up a whole new perspective of what the NZ genre of theatre/music crossover can be. We’re excited by the potential.” Explains Kitan, adding, “just like a second album following a successful debut – the expectations are always high. Our challenge with Jack Hartnett is to create something completely different and unexpected. We named our company 18 months ago, Bullet

Heart Club, with Daffodils, we brought the heart – with Jack we bring you the bullet!”

-DFN +DUWQHWW

“The music, lyrics and score for Jack Hartnett are created by multi-instrumentalist and music producer Abraham Kunin (The Means). The sound for the show, as described by Abraham, is “dreamy, dark, spacious, pop music – the kind that turns thoughts inwards. At times, industrial and brazen. The soundtrack takes listeners beyond their comfort in the sensory and emotional realms”. Artists that have inspired the work include Thom Yorke and Bon Iver. We’re expecting audiences to walk out buzzing from the beauty of the sound,” says Kitan. The live band have been confirmed to include Kunin, Leon Radojkovic (Brel, Live, Live Cinema) and Alex Freer, who will tour with Tiny Ruins and Bic Runga later this year. K’ Rd Strip – A Place to Stand will open at Auckland’s Q Theatre on 14 July, Rotorua’s Blue Baths on 21 July and Hamilton’s Meteor Theatre on 23 July. Jack Hartnett will play the Q Theatre Loft from 24 July - 8 August. Tickets for both shows can be purchased from www.qtheatre.co.nz or by calling 09 309 9771. | July 2015 | 19

The Beat Goes On at TAP Those looking to carry on the party after being kicked out of Family at 4am now have a place to dance until the sun rises TAP aka The After Party is a new ‘dry bar’ located at 268 K Road, which will serve non-alcoholic drinks between 12 – 8am. The bar is a joint venture between Wayne Clark and Grady Elliott, both innovative pioneers of the gay bar scene in New Zealand. The concept for TAP is simple – a place to go to carry on partying after licensed venues are forced to close their doors at 4am. “We want the party to carry on. There’s a void in the market, because the licensed places all close at 4am” Grady says he is optimistic of the

bar’s potential to succeed saying the concept of unlicensed bars has worked well overseas and that there is consumer demand for a bar like TAP in Auckland. “The feedback we’re getting from people is that they want to wind down, slow down but still dance, so we’re offering that to them.” TAP will be an inclusive venue, which aims to attract a broad range of patrons. Grady tells express that he expects there to be a good mix of straight and gay customers. “We’re going to be the only one in Auckland, so we are expecting a good mix of people.” “Instead of going home at 4am, people will now have a place to go.”

TAP will be opening on Friday 3 July. The club will open at midnight and stay open until 8am, with entry during the first hour free. There will then be a $10 entry fee from 1am to 3am and $15 then. Article | Levi Joule. Photo | Oliver Hall.

HEALTH

The Windows to the Soul Supplement: tablets aren’t just for playing on. Your vision requires a lot of nutrient care, ensuring you have good levels of Vitamin C and E, beta-carotene, Zinc, Zeaxanthin, selenium and lutein will help to ensure you’re giving your eyes the best chance of maintaining their health. Essential fatty acids from fish oils will also provide some help in protecting the eyes. All in all, looking after your eye health is just as important as going to the gym. So rather than just giving your eyes a work out looking up and down whilst at the gym or club ensure you are giving them all they need to be able to check out the hotties for years to come. Health 2000’s Stu Cook examines what can go wrong with our eyes and how do we stop it or at least slow it down. There are many problems we can have with our eyes, from simple clarity that can be fixed with glasses, contacts or laser surgery, through to glaucoma, detached retinas or even blindness, which may not be able to be cured. Frighteningly the cause of these scary eye health problems can stem from diabetes, strokes and high blood pressure, through to trauma, reactions to medications and chemicals. Ultimately what we want to know though, is how do we look after our eyes? In this day and age eating your carrots isn’t going to cut it. They do provide some beta-carotene which the body uses to make Vitamin A. Vitamin A helps the eye convert light into understandable waves, plus it helps support the cornea, the clear part at the front of the eye. However, the amount of carrots you would need to consume would not really be helpful and may lead to other issues. So, what can we do that will help? Eat correctly: cut the crap. Sugar can lead to obesity, obesity can lead to diabetes, and diabetes can lead to blindness - scary! Stick to green, leafy veges, oily fish, eggs, beans and other non-meat 22 | July 2015 |

protein sources. Citrus fruits can also add some protection.

Quit smoking: not just to save your life. Smoking can lead to a higher prevalence of cataracts and optic nerve damage. There are so many reasons to quit, and so many products to help. Going blind is just another reason to stop! Wear sunglasses: U’Ve been warned! Ensure that the sunglasses have UV protection, they don’t have to be expensive but they do need to block the harmful UVA and UVB rays. Look away from the computer: don’t work too hard. Staring at anything or anyone can get you into trouble, but staring at a computer screen for too long can lead to many eye health issues. Eye strain, blurry vision, dry eyes, the list goes on. Rest your eyes frequently when working at the computer.

ARTS

Life is Beautiful Bede Stevens examines the male form through the lense of Alex Efimoff. Wellington photographer Alex Efimoff is 36, he was born and raised in Russia surrounded by his artist father’s sculptures of Soviet life and sometimes nude women. Those of us familiar with Alex’s art now know him to be surrounded by lush, intensely focused photographs of nude males. Alex remarked to me that being immersed in his father’s art gave him a “perception of balance”; indeed Alex’s male nudes are solid forms, exquisitely lit (and sometimes kitted out in a modern fashioned version of Caravaggio’s boys) with a weight that is palpable; sculptural. Alex also creates tender “life” photographs of deep focus black and white. In their stillness, their quietness, their spiritualism these architectural works recall the eye of renowned NZ photographic artist Laurence Aberhart; as if to unwittingly agree Alex refers refers to these as, “monochromatic documentary”. His series on Christchurch city after the 2011 earthquake and his images of children’s graves in Waikumete

Cemetery are testament to his sensitivity. However this is “express” and so back to the male nudes. I mentioned the images of a bearded male fully nude transfixing me with their details, remarking to Alex that so often the details of a face or genitals can be so distracting in nude works –smaller areas of intense detail at either end of a vast tract of flesh – but not in Alex’s work. With his use of deep focus every pore is subjected to the same intense stare. Everything is so scrutinised that small marks on his bearded model become fascinating as one questions what they are? And so Alex Efimoff is responsible for some very beautiful nudes especially in the intensity

of his models flesh; the smallest flawed nick of flesh providing the viewer with as much interest as an exquisitely lit torso or the folds of a penis. In his adoptive city of Wellington, Alex appreciates the combination of interesting buildings within the accessibility the compact city allows, together with its great vibe. This humming city and the country have seen Alex work – within a comparatively brief time – for fashion and sport magazines, dance companies and Royal New Zealand Ballet dancers. But he yearns for further opportunities to work with NZ male and female models to take on the role of the artist’s muse to further his art. Amanaki Prescott-Faletau took Auckland Pride by storm with her acting and dancing; this month she makes her debut as a playwright co-writing Inky Pinky Ponky as part of Auckland Theatre Company’s triumphant Next Big Thing festival. Inky Pinky Ponky tells the story of Lisa, a fabulous fakaleiti who is put through her paces as the new ‘boy’ at St Valentine’s High, only to find as the school ball looms, that love is in the air. The story co-written by Leki Jackson-Bourke was inspired by Amanaki’s real-life story as a Tongan fakaleiti attending an Auckland Catholic high school. Amanaki tells express she wants to see fakaleiti stories told, “Because I feel like they haven't been told before, but promises Inky Pinky Ponky will tell a take everyone can relate too. “This story is really [just] about a human looking for love. She explains. Caitlyn Reminds The World: All Trans Lives Matter!

Ramon Te Wake explores the impact Caitlyn Jenner’s public transition has had on the trans community. On 29 May 29 2014 history was made when trans actress and activist Laverne Cox was featured on the cover of Time Magazine. The cover title read – “The Transgender Tipping Point”. It was a critical moment for all trans people but more so because Time had featured a trans woman of colour as there cover girl. #blacklivesmatter #Includingblacktranswoman On 1 June 2015, trans reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner was revealed to the world on the cover of Vanity Fair. The caption was simple “Call me Caitlyn”. Caitlyn’s cover didn’t just slip on by like a casual stroll through the park she god damn smashed it and broke the Internet while she was at it. #sorrynotsorryKimK 28 | July 2015 |

Caitlyn’s revelation held the world by the balls and demanded we all stop and pay attention. And the world did. I can’t remember a time when trans swept the globe like this. When trans was on the lips, fingertips and minds of literally everyone on social media and beyond. People had a lot to say – the good, the mostly good and the bad. But regardless of where people stand on the Caitlyn spectrum this was a game changer for trans people. What it did was create a much, needed space for conversations to be had around the complex range of issues that impact the trans community. Not just the glamorous kind, which always tends to dominate the media. The triumphs and tragedies, remembering those who have gone before us - paying respect to the thousands of trans individuals and organizations who fight for our rights every day

… but most importantly, using the platform to talk about the work that desperately needs to be done and there’s still a lot of work to be done. Discrimination with housing, health care, transphobia, homelessness, sexual and physical violence – bullying, unreported murders, and suicide. The list is long and tragically uneven when it comes to awareness and visibility. Even in the wake of Caitlyn’s global take over people are continuing these conversations on all social media platforms. The audience is huge. The reach undeniable, and that’s what counts. Caitlyn has fame and money, her transition swift and seemingly effortless. All carried out right before our eyes, scrutinized and criticized. TV star. Fair game. Most of us will never be able to transition with that level of financial ease and Hollywood support. #onlyforcertaintransfolk. And that alone has created a lot of backlash. gayexpress.co.nz

It could be said that Caitlyn’s social status #whiterichprivilege is lost on the disenfranchised. How can she make a difference in the lives of trans kids who are poor and homeless and living on the streets? Maybe she can’t. But I think her story and representation is part of a much bigger picture. Despite the flash and cash, the lovers and the haters, any trans person who steps forward into their own authentic skin and reveals themselves, to their families and the world, is gutsy in my books.

It’s important to note that every trans person’s transition is different and unique according, to their own life journey and no two experiences are the same. Each should be acknowledged and valued regardless of social standing, geography and economics. The struggle is always real and the adversities affect each of us in different ways. However, the more we accept our kids and family members for being beautifully trans the more chance we have of changing minds and saving lives. On 24 April 2015, 17 million people tuned in to watch Caitlyn reveal her truth to Diane Sawyer … that’s a lot of eyes on a trans woman and her lifetime struggle with gender identity. I watched it. It was compelling. But what was crucial for me was how loving and supportive her children were and I thought that’s her sweet spot. That’s where gayexpress.co.nz

she has the ability to make a real difference. At the core of the Caitlyn story it’s all about family. Sure she comes from one of the most famous family dynasties on the globe and even in their own dysfunctional, annoying and fantastical way – they love, fight, disagree and figure stuff out like any other family. I feel you rolling your eyes. #richpeoplesproblems. But a family nonetheless … Let’s hope that Caitlyn’s star power and reachability to a mainstream TV audience is what helps bring more awareness and education to families with trans kids, siblings and parents. Lets hope we can keep the conversations alive, using the platform to push laws through that protect trans people, in particular those most vulnerable and marginalized. #alltranslivesmatter. Let’s hope that Caitlyn’s story has shown all of us that love and acceptance is not found on the cover of a magazine but in our homes and within our own families. Let’s keep stepping forward, sharing our stories and keep making a difference. And hopefully we can save more lives. Caitlyn Jenner will make her first live appearance since transitioning on Wednesday 15 July when she accepts ESPN’s Arthur Ashe Award for Courage in Los Angeles. Article | Ramon Te Wake. Giapo Auckland’s Most Popular Gelato Store Honours Caitlyn Jenner To mark Caitlyn Jenner’s coming out, acclaimed Gelato-maker Giapo Grazioli created a portrait of Jenner on white chocolate. “When I saw the Vanity Fair photo I thought She looks hot” Grazioli told express, “I wanted to do something to show my support for her and what she’s achieved.” Grazioli's creation took the Vanity Fair cover photo and printed it on a cocoa butter sheet, which is left to set on crystallising white chocolate. $5 from the sale of each ice cream was donated to Rainbow Youth. Not only does he make beautiful creations, he often does so with a purpose higher than profit making. Grazioli (who also created an bright yellow and gold ice cream for express’ cover last month) has been a fierce advocate for GLBT rights. He says the issue is one, which is close to his heart. “I believe people should be free to be who they are,” he confirms. | July 2015 | 29

Meet Our Community herbs and plum sauce to die for. What are the three things you are most passionate about? I love travel, even if it is a simple short road trip, photography is a must, cinema and all its glamour!

Kiss & Tell t She may be getting poked with the royal sword for all her good work, but our blood-hound is telling us that this colourful activist is not to be trusted and would have cost us the marriage equality bill if her arguments had been heard. t Auckland is set to be a one-horse town no longer. The cowboy who knows how to make things work not only intends to cater to the parched, but also the burly and hairy. Time to dig out some camouflage! t Which self-important blogger is now accusing high-ranking officials of our most frequently used acronym of not practising what they preach? Maybe they don’t ‘love’ theirs as much as we thought? t Last month we heard a little tweet that last year’s biggest resignation was linked to missing funds. This month those ‘hand in the till’ rumours have gone from twitters to full blown squawks! Smoke without fire? t It’s usually bumper-to-bumper on this road, except for that special day when it becomes ours! However the director of our traffic has said ‘no-more’ and wants a different position. Preferably a role that doesn’t require turning up for high-profile TV interviews.

If you could walk a mile in a famous GLBT person’s shoes, who’s would they be? And why? It would be Adam Lambert. Seriously? That boy can sing and to be able to take over the world on the wings of one of the best rock band’s that ever existed [Queen] - great way to go! Originally from Brazil, Laurindo Sousa has lived in Queenstown for 10 years, working in Photography and Hospitality Management. When did you first come out? I’ve always known about my sexuality since I was kid, but it was in 2006 when I’ve decided it was time to embrace what I really am and just be happy. How was coming out for you? When did you tell your parents? It was scary and exciting at first. Didn’t know how my family and friends would react knowing about my sexuality. I told my parents about 1 year later and it was the biggest challenge I ever had. I come from a Christian family and to my surprise it went better than I expected. Who are your greatest influences? I have to say my Mother! She raised ten kids without a single tumble. Who does this these days? She is my inspiration for strength, motivation to chase the dream and never lose the cool. What are the most important lessons your parents taught you? Never take anything for granted. Work hard and honesty above all. What’s the best thing you cook? I love to create and experiment in the kitchen. I am a lover of pork and I am very comfortable to say that I can cook a very succulent pork belly on lemon

If you could have five GLBT people (living or dead) over for dinner who would you choose and why? Sir Elton John, Boy George, Ellen DeGeneres, Neil Patrick Harris and the gorgeous Ricky Martin. It would be the perfect combination of great music, sharp sense of humour and hotness all in one package. What can't you live without? My camera and hair wax! Please complete this sentence: The world would be a better place if… I could be cloned!!! Where are your favourite gay spots in New Zealand? Caluzzi Bar and Cabaret Auckland. Fantastic, or dragtastic as they say! Have you ever had a recurring dream - if so what happened? Yes, I very often dream about being a fugitive with my brothers. We end up on my mother’s doorstep, hand her avocados and she advises us to keep running. Never understood the meaning of it. Please complete the sentence: I will die happy if… I still have my six pack at the age of 80!!! Want to see Laurindo in the flesh? Get down to Gay Ski Week QT from Saturday 29 August. FOOD

Foodie Bites

Yummies from Scratch We checked out the recently opened Scratch Bakers cafe in Graham Street in the city the other day. This new flagship space for the popular Auckland bakery is very industrial chic (but oddly really-homely at the same time) and embarrassingly we can now personally vouch for the brioche, apple donut, frangipani tart and raw chilli chocolate fudge. All in the name of research. Scratch Bakers HQ, 5 Graham Street, CBD www. scratchbakers.co.nz The Cold Brew trend Seems like cold brew coffee is becoming quite the trend. We've seen it in three places in the last two weeks! Clever Alex Huseyin-Isik from Deco Eatery in Titirangi is doing a sixteen hour brew, Harpoon Cold Brew are selling their concentrate in Nosh Stores and our lovely friends at Kokako are still enjoying huge success with their version that's been around a while. It takes a bit of getting used to since most of us associate coffee with a hot drink format , but once you get past it, it's pretty fab. gayexpress.co.nz

Foodie Gathering The end of this month brings a highlight in the annual food calendar – the Auckland Food Show. Bigger than ever, there will be the usual array of interesting food to sample as well as lots of demos by favourites like Nadia Lim, Simon Gault, Chelsea Winter, Ray McVinnie and Karena and Kasey. We're looking forward to seeing the gorgeous Gareth Stewart smouldering behind the stove as well as the lovely Bondi Harvest boys with their beautiful food and sun kissed Sydney surfer looks. Auckland Food Show, ASB Showgrounds, 30 July - 2 August www.foodshow.co.nz Lewisham Winners We attended the Lewisham awards last month and were very proud to see community favourite Mark Wallbank's Woodpecker Hill take out the award for Outstanding New Venue and LittleWolf caterers take out the NZ Outstanding Caterer award. We have to admit to getting slightly mistyeyed when Emma Connell (Mama Wolf ) took the stage and thanked her beautiful wife. We didn't stay till the wee hours but we could see there were going to be some sore heads from that after party.

Raw Eating Hits Mainstream We quite like the idea that those who want to eat a bit cleaner can now get raw, paleo-friendly, sugarfree, dairy and gluten free options at Columbus Coffee stores. While we'd all love to eat at Little Bird or Wilder and Hunt every day, it's not always convenient to where we are and all too often that becomes an excuse to grab junk food. The coffee franchise has released a new Lifestyle Favourites range for people trying to live a bit healthier. Every store will carry at least two products in this category and they will be specially marked. Article | Alexia Santamaria. The Work Horse behind the Studs:

The David Forest Story As a young hot shot in LA’s music industry David Forest was working with the likes of Stevie Nicks and Santana throughout the seventies, but over the next decade swapped singers for sex, and managed adult actors instead! From Ken Ryker to Ryan Idol, Jeff Stryker to Zeb Atlas; David Forest has had a hand in the careers of some of the biggest male names the adult industry has ever produced. It would have been impossible to predict the path his career would take when he started studying to become a plastic surgeon at the prestigious Stanford University. The young entrepreneur began organising gigs for college bands around campus and found it so lucrative he dropped out of his classes to book bands full time. He began managing the careers of Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham who would go on to become stars when they joined Fleetwood Mac. His success saw Forest booking big festivals like Woodstock, and he was soon headhunted by David Geffen to work at his legendary Hollywood agency to the 32 | July 2015 |

stars, CMA. “That was my indoctrination to the real showbiz world,” he reminisces. Geffen signed stars like James Taylor and Van Morrison, then passed them onto Forest to book their appearances. Forest describes Geffen, who went on to co-found Dreamworks Pictures, as a ‘tiger.’ This year Forbes magazine estimated David Geffen to be worth US$6.9 billion. Unsurprisingly he is considered to be one of the most influential men in Hollywood. He is also openly gay. “When I first met Geffen, he took a liking to me and we went out a few times to gay bars in Los Angeles, but where I was very open about my sexuality, he was not at all back then. When he did open up that was great but it took him a while,” Forest says. Over the years GLBT commentators have accused Geffen of holding back the gay agenda in Hollywood. Some hypothesizing he has advised gay celebrities to stay in the closet. Forest believes it is important to remember that Geffen is first and foremost, a businessman.

Billy Herrington

“He helped those who he felt he could benefit from… Geffen’s all about the dollars and cents.” He points out. In the Summer of 1981, Forest says he ‘tumbled’ out of the music business, “in pretty bad shape.” He had left CMA to start his own agency, and in two years had declared bankruptcy. He was picking up rent boys on Santa Monica Boulevard, when his next career brainwave hit and he invited the hustlers to come and live with him. Initially pimping them out under the banner ‘Brad’s Buddies’ a service he advertised in The Advocate. In the video age, Forest realised the potential money that could be made by having the guys: star in adult movies, promote themselves with live paid performances at nightclubs and be available for private meetings with fans. The lines between business and pleasure became blurred along the way, Forest ended up having gayexpress.co.nz

relationships with some of his stars including Jamie Wingo and Cody Cash. “In order to really fight for those guys and stand up and be their representative you’re going to have to have a love for them or an obsession, which I did,” Forrest confirms. “I have been criticised for sometimes mixing it too much. I don’t have a problem with that... if there’s an occasional little playtime – so what?!”

to be a different way of handling the private meetings. The one way is you don’t discuss any sex with the clientele; you’re just inviting meetings… I never tried to talk anyone into doing it, these boys were all already doing it! Even Zeb Atlas, who I thought was totally straight, was doing tricks with men. You know how these bodybuilders are - they always have sponsors!” He chuckles.

Forest’s list of haters grew even more rapidly than his list of stars. “The main thing that people didn’t like about me is that I would orchestrate these boys to do these private meetings.” With stories swirling that Forest has secured $10,000 for Jeff Stryker to meet with a wealthy Texan and the high-profile bust of Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss; Forest who had had mainly incidental brushes with the law previously, could remain untouchable no longer; he served 19 months in prison from 1996-98.

Forest’s view on the future of gay porn is bleak. “Places like Men.com and Sean Cody are a dollar a month... Of course the less they charge, the less they can pay the actors, and the less they pay the actors, the less quality of actors they are going to attract. Back in the eighties the money that was being offered was pretty damn good. That’s why they got the Jeff Strykers and Ken Rykers... [Now] You’re going to see less and less of that quality.”

He sentence left him unapologetic for his practises. “After getting out I realised there had gayexpress.co.nz

Naturally it was Forest that orchestrated gay porn’s last big performance payout. “I got Zeb Atlas $25,000 for his first movie, Best Men with

Falcon [Studios in 2008]. He did two scenes... that was the last time anyone got that kind of money again.” Considering Forest ‘old school management fees’, (“20% of everything you earn”) it was clearly a profitable exchange for everyone involved. These days the payments are rather more meagre. “Companies don’t want to pay anything now. $3000 for a scene is a lot of money these days, normally only $1000 or $1500.” Compare that to 20 years ago when Forest says $5000 per scene was an average rate. Perhaps the lack of money has also led to a lack of finesse in the industry. Forest notes that his star building formula is largely ignored these days. “[Internet studio] Corbin Fisher get some hot guys but they don’t even give them a last name. They do a few scenes and that’s the end of it. They’re not building any lasting stars.” At 66, Forest says his next step he says is to write his autobiography, and “make some money.” It should be quite a read! INTERVIEW

ZEB ATLAS: GOD OF PORN Named after the Greek Titan who held the world on his shoulders, Zeb Atlas is one of the most successful gay-for-pay porn stars of all time. He spoke to Oliver Hall about entering the industry, earning big bucks and the misconceptions surrounding porn. You have a degree in Health Science and Sport when you first began studying what sort of career were you hoping for? Somewhere in fitness program management. Probably a big corporation coordinating their onsite program to keep their employees healthy… But, as a teen I loved bodybuilding shows. I did one when I finished college and the photographer, Ron Lloyd, was there. Ron approached me about doing some physique modelling. He offered me $3000 for a solo photo shoot and J/O (jerk off). I felt that was great money so I did it. Everything followed from there. Zeb Atlas was born. I didn’t worry about the ‘corporate fitness program’ stuff seeing the kind of money the physique modelling could bring. Tell us about the very first time you had sex with a man on camera (with Adam Killian for Falcon’s Best Men)?

on’ gay sex on camera experience made it special and more exciting than any other scene I did after it. It was my favourite scene I’ve done all these years. What advice would you give to straight guys who are considering doing some gay-for-pay scenes? Be ready to get criticized but be strong and do what your heart says to do. Don’t think that just because you’re straight you can get away with minimal sexual activity. If you want to make good money you have to be very good at the sex. Kissing and being orally versatile (front and back) is mandatory. If you can handle being versatile in anal - great. I’m only a top because that’s just what my body dictates. I have done everything possible. What do you feel is the biggest misconception about the life of an adult actor? That they have all kinds of sex every day. That they make great money and don’t need any other work. Do all your family know you work as an adult film actor?

It was surprisingly very smooth and comfortable for me (I think Adam thought the same). I had done gay sex a few times, prior, with clients so it wasn’t like my very first experience with a guy.

They all have found out, eventually. But, it’s just not discussed at least not with me. I’m sure they do mention it to themselves!

What do you think made that scene so successful? [It won a Grabby award for Best Duo in 2009.]

Retired, living in a big beach home and being healthy and happy.

Good chemistry and a great connection between Adam and I really made it all work. The fact that it was Adam’s first time having sex on camera and my first ‘full gayexpress.co.nz

Next Month’s Special Feature:

Ask Agony Aunt Lisa Rainbow Counsellor Lisa Michelle is here to help with your problems. I have been with my girlfriend for 7 years and she just told me she has always felt like a male, and would like to transition this year. I am devastated. I am lesbian and I believed she was too. Now what do I do? I can't imagine how that feels. I have a friend who was in the same situation a few years back, and she shared how difficult it was when her wife had top surgery as she was, of course, attracted to breasts. That said, she is still married to her now-husband and has demonstrated love for his spirit regardless of his body. I pray things work out for you and your girlfriend, whether you choose to stay together or not. If you choose to stay, it will take some time to get your head around so don't be afraid to reach out for some support. OUTLine provide both phone and face-to-face counselling and can be contacted on 0800 688 5463. Go well.

My partner and I had a huge fight yesterday and have not spoken to each other since. He accused me of being like his dad, which really pissed me off because his dad was very controlling. How do I teach him that I am not his father? You are not his father, and you should not have to teach him that. You do, however, need to sit down together and ask him how you remind him of his father. Perhaps you have some habits that could appear to be controlling? The silent treatment, as such, is a form of passive aggression so one of you needs to break the silence. How about a candid conversation around what is behind controlling behaviour - fear, and the feeling of being out of control - to ascertain any projection from your partner onto you which is really intended for his father. Best of luck.

If you have an issue you would like Lisa to talk about in express, email and let her know at ask@gayexpress.co.nz
