I was lucky to spend the first week of the month down in Queenstown for Gay Ski Week a nice way to farewell winter. Queenstown is breathtakingly beautiful, but there is no where quite like home. One of the things I love most about Auckland city is the vibrant arts and culture scene, something that is reflected throughout this month’s issue. In fact our cover features the two stars of Silo theatre’s upcoming show Hudson & Halls Live! We got to chat with the show’s director and co-creator Kip Chapman. We also preview Academy Cinema’s latest GLBT film nights and talk with hottie Shane Cortese about his new role in Auckland Theatre Companys Guys and Dolls. Make sure you also check out our interview with journalist and author Alison Mau on First Lady, the incredible story of New Zealand’s sex change pioneer, Liz Roberts. I hope you find this month’s issue both entertaining and informative in equal measure! Don’t forget we bring you all the news as it happens every day on gayexpress.co.nz! The Auckland Rainbow Advisory Panel members were named last month. With a few exceptions, those picked to be on the panel don’t exactly inspire confidence nor are they particularly representative of the wider community. But that’s the panel we will have to live with for the next year. The question now is whether they can make the most of the opportunity not for themselves, but for our community.
Feroz Ali stepped down as the chairperson of the Ethnic Advisory Panel in May saying he “didn’t feel comfortable getting paid $500 (per meeting) to chair a panel that has no legal mandate or to give advice to council that will actually make any impact.”
The bar for success for the Advisory Panel isn’t set all that high. If the Panel can ensure laws passed by council are GLBT friendly and inclusive as well as secure funding for our community's big events such as Auckland Pride, the panel can be considered a triumph.
There are a number on the political right who dismiss the Panel as a waste of money and completely unnecessary - I don’t agree with that. I think there is a convincing case to be made that a Panel is needed, particularly given the wide range of Panels already in existence. Also, $56,000 is small change to the council and if the Panel is listened to and given adequate scope, it can have a very real and positive impact for GLBT Aucklanders. Value for money really.
"The bar for success for the advisory panel isn’t set all that high."
Yet it is hard to be hopeful that will happen considering the dysfunction and tokenistic nature of many of the other advisory panels. Earlier this year, two members of the Ethnic Peoples Advisory Panel and one member of the Disability Panel quit over concerns the panels opinions were being ignored.
Another member called the Panel “tokenstic” and a “waste of time.” Why do we expect things will be any different for the Rainbow Advisory Panel?
The problem is, just like every other council Panel, they won’t have that scope and it is unlikely they will be listened to. It’s up to the newly appointed Panel members to try make sure our community’s voice is now heard. Levi Joule
HOTTIE OF THE MONTH
Shane Cortese Shane Cortese has been a fixture on New Zealand television for many years, starring in everything from Outrageous Fortune to Dancing With The Stars. But theatre was where he got his start. Cortese makes his return to Auckland’s theatre scene where he will star as Nathan Detroit in the Auckland Theatre Company’s Guys and Dolls, which opens on October 29 at Q theatre. Cortese is looking forward to returning to the stage, after spending the last eighteen months working on television shows The Brokenwood Mysteries and Step Dave. Speaking to express, Cortese says his first foray into acting was a result of a crush. “I was madly besotted with somebody involved in the industry and the only way to continue to see her was to pull the curtains and ring the bells backstage, so I did and I caught the acting bug.” “When the next show came along I auditioned for a part and got it because there was always a lack of men in those local productions and I just fell in love with everything about it,” Cortese says. More than two decades later, Cortese says he is as passionate about his work ever. “I wouldn’t change it for the world.” Article, Levi Joule. Photo, Siobhan Waterhouse. 10 | October 2015 |

BEST IN CLASS October means our annual ‘Best in Class’ motoring issue! HONDA HR-V SPORT Right Up there! Honda make some very clever, well designed vehicles, often introducing new technology well before other makes. Indeed their ASIMO robot can even identify human emotions. While this feature is absent from their new HR-V range, not much else is missing! The new HR-V is Honda's re-entry into the smaller SUV market, one that is showing the largest growth of any motoring market sector. The model tested was the Sport model (one of six models) and incorporated a host of desirable features including LaneWatch Camera and the City Brake Assist System, which stops the car automatically if an imminent crash is detected. But the feature that appealed most was the panoramic glass roof. This is amazing! Other features included a Proximity key, LED headlights and push button start. The interior is quite lux but the touch button system can be quite distracting while driving, as you had to look at what you were doing rather than at the road. No feeling for functions such as radio volume for instance. Also the USB ports – a great feature – were hidden away under the dashboard and would require an extension lead for most uses. Particular mention has to be made of the interior layout. A centre mounted petrol tank allows a multiple choice of layouts

from large cargo to tall mode to long mode where long item such as skis can be accommodated with ease. Actually the new HR-V is surprisingly spacious and cannot be said to be really in the small SUV sector, rather the class above which includes such classy vehicles as the VW Tiguan. The driving experience was top rate. Quieter than other SUVs, the HR-V feels again that it belongs to a class above. An SUV, of course, gives you a higher ride height but in the past this has often meant compromised handling. Not so here! In NZ, Honda have given the HR-V a
1.8 litre non-turbo engine coupled with a CRV transmission. This gives smooth driving around town coupled with quite good fuel consumption. The Honda HR-V is a great competitor in the smaller SUV market. With six spec levels ranging from only $33,000 to $43,000 this is one classy, good looking vehicle. It is practical and for the most part well designed. If you are looking at the likes of a Nissan Qashqai or Suzuki Vitara you must also consider the new HR-V. It is better! Article | Robert Adams

SKODA FABIA COTY! If you need to be convinced of the superiority of capitalism over socialism, just look at the evolution of Skoda cars. The butt of many jokes when produced by the then communist Czechoslovakia, the Skoda range – under VW private management – has now evolved into a sophisticated selection of vehicles at the lower end of the of the Audi-VW range.
fuel economy figures. In Sports mode; the recommended way to drive the car, the performance was much more lively, though revving to 3000 rpm before dropping into third gear seemed rather noisy at times. Neither of the auto settings seemed ideal to me, but I understand the manual versions are now the preferred choice of rally drivers which speaks volumes!
There is even a NZ connection to the The Fabia comes in a range of colours and communist-era Skodas, when a Skoda trim settings. I loved the quilted fabric on drivetrain was used to power the local version of a Land Rover: the Trekka (now a cultural icon!) But in the last two years Coutts in Newmarket report a 200% increase in Skoda sales, and the growth of a loyal group of followers of the brand.
the sports seats but (reflecting its position at the bottom of the Audi-VW range) the interior did seem rather plasticy. The exterior appearance is unpretentious (it won’t stand out in a crowd, certainly not in a standard colour) but there’s an attractive masculine angularity to the car (like the new Golf ) that stands it apart from its more curvaceous competitors like the Mazda 2 and the Ford Fiesta. A range of colour and trim options (eg wheels) can be selected to customise the
car to individual requirements. At $26,990 in high spec and with the European COTY Award under its arm, this latest rendition of the 2015 Skoda Fabia will prove attractive to those seeking an environmentally-friendly and economical compact, with more boot capacity than its Polo cousin and a range of standard features that will satisfy the needs of even the most discerning small car buyer. Article | Stephen Rainbow
My test car was a 1.2 L turbo Fabia, the recently announced European car-ofthe-year. Speaking of Europeans, one of the most annoying aspects of the car – apparently an emissions reducing measure required in Europe – was the automatic switch-off of the engine within moments of stopping at the lights (as featured in Audi and other European makes now too). The lag between the lights turning green and take-off took some getting used to. Fortunately the auto turn-off could be switched off, but this has to be done manually every time the car is started. Once running, the car was lively and nifty, though with the auto set in standard mode the limited engine capacity of the car was evident, no doubt contributing to the exceptional

RANGE ROVER EVOQUE TD4 Top Form Continues! I had my first taste of the Range Rover Evoque upon release in 2012, so to be given the opportunity to review the compact SUV again I do ask, ‘are we still in the honeymoon phase’?
The Evoque is aimed at the ‘younger urban buyers’ market. If around 90% of sales of the new Evoque are to customers who have never previously owned a Land Rover product, what is all the fuss about?
When the Evoque arrived on the world stage in 2011, there were few if any peers in this vehicle class. Stiff competition has arrived with the Porsche Macan and the refreshed BMW X3, so is this Range Rover still desirable with the onslaught of the German fashionistas?
Without question, the Evoque still gets the attention in equal measure as any premium machine from Porsche or other such highly desirable rides. The response is strong and overwhelmingly positive. This quickly quantifies the aforementioned Evoques desirability. Clearly everyone wants a piece of this SUV. This is perhaps the greatest selling point of car, but is this beauty just skin deep?
The original formula of maintaining the desirability of the larger Range Rovers through a compact package with sharp lines and a thin waist still holds true. In 2011 the Evoque won great applause for keeping its genetic and visual appeal very close to that of the concept vehicle, the Land Rover LRX Concept. Land Rover took more than 18,000 orders for the Range Rover Evoque before the car started trundling down the production line at Halewood in the UK. This gives you some idea of how sought after this car was during its launch, owing much of this early preproduction success to keeping the product as close as possible to the original concept version. This success didn’t come by chance, as Land Rover initially undertook large scale customer research in order to further raise the desirability of the brand while ‘absolutely’ meeting the customers’ expectations of the Evoque.

The Evoque on test is the TD4 diesel turbo engine with automatic gearbox and paddle-shift. Since the car had only a handful of miles the drivetrain felt a little tight and hesitant but this is typical. Expect things to free up over time. Alongside a sexy exterior, the inside is still bang on the money for luxury, feel and materials. With such a slim and rakish rear end, visibility is limited, but with the reversing camera shown in large format on the infotainment touch-screen certainly helps. You tend to rely on this key feature for parking duties. As your hands move around the dash and cabin, you cannot be anything but in awe of the effort in material selection. So often in cars, interior materials are selected based purely on price add, with little effort gone into understanding and
optimising textural sensory responses. The seating position is somewhere in between the sit-up and command format of the Evoques, larger brothers and the more typical sedan position most people are used to.
high residual values on the second hand market New Zealanders' love affair with the Evoque still continues! Article | Martin Todd
Heading off to begin the daily chores, I remember the Evoque as a star in the corners. But this is the city and in typical fashion, with duties likely of most Evoque owners, this test will see traffic congestion, motorways while gazing out of the windows wanting to cruise the high street after hours with friends ready to hit the night life. The Evoque is a very nice and comfortable place to be, it doesn’t shout about its talent and still holds its head high with recent competition to the market. With

BMW M4 Desire Collecting an M4 for its test drive at Jerry Claytons Takapuna, I typically enjoy seeing other models on offer at dealerships, but it is hard to go past the twinkling eyes of the sales staff there. Even with the pending 2015 model due shortly, I had yet to drive the 2014 model and was rearing to get a taste of it. Originally M cars were as much an accoutrement as one's jumper being placed over the shoulders in an attempt to heighten one's general desirability. As time has progressed so has BMW's attempt at widening that appeal to a far broader spectrum of desire. So much so, it now becomes rather difficult to make

ACADEMY CINEMA'S OCTOBER GLBT FILM NIGHTS
Academy cinema continues showcasing some of the world’s best GLBT films this month. Stunning films are highlighted in October - Freeheld and Legend.
Freeheld - Don't Forget The Tissues!
Legend - Tom Hardy Delivers Knockout Performance
Freeheld premiered last month at the Toronto Film Festival and is based on the 2007 documentary short film of the same name about police officer Laurel Hester's fight against the Ocean County, New Jersey Board of Chosen Freeholders to allow her pension benefits to be transferred to her domestic partner after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Legend tells the story of the identical twin gangsters Reggie and Ronnie Kray, two of the most notorious criminals in British history, and their organised crime empire in the East End of London during the 1960s.
Freehold stars Julianne Moore and Ellen Page who have both been praised for their strong performances, which ultimately carry the film. A powerful film based on a real life event which would set in motion the campaign for full marriage equality in the United States. Well worth checking out, just remember to bring the tissues, there will be tears!
Tom Hardy stars as both Reggie and Ron in an incredible double performance, which has been praised by critics and audiences alike, with one reviewer describing Hardy’s performance as “smooth, clever, romantic and calculated.” A classic crime thriller taking viewers into the secret history of the 1960s and the extraordinary events that secured the infamy of the Kray twins., Legend also explores the sexuality of the twin brothers, who both identified as bisexual. In the film, Ron carouses in London’s gay underworld, making friends – and perhaps more – with Conservative peer Lord Boothby, at a time in which homosexuality was a criminal offence.

THEATRE
HUDSON & HALLS LIVE! Hudson & Halls Live! is Silo Theatre’s final show for the year, and is set to be a stunner. Premiering at Auckland Live’s Herald Theatre from 5 November – 5 December, Hudson & Halls Live! offers a glimpse into the remarkable journey and terrible behaviour of two incredible personalities that were New Zealand’s original great gay love story. Silo believes that the remarkable story of the charismatic duo that was Peter Hudson and David Halls is long overdue to be told. Working with theatrical daredevil director and co-creator Kip Chapman (Apollo 13: Mission Control), this is a show that gives audiences a truly immersive experience. Arriving at the Herald Theatre, audience are “cast” as the live TV studio audience for what is the couple’s first live broadcast – a Christmas special with all the trimmings. Hudson & Halls has been described by Silo Theatre as NZ’s original gay love story. By 1981 the show was regularly ranked in the week’s five most highly-rated TV programmes in New Zealand and the duo won a Feltex Award for Best Entertainer of the Year. Why do you think they managed to be so embraced by middle class NZ? New Zealanders had many different relationships with them. You can’t 22 | October 2015 |
put it down to one thing. They were just so fun and exciting. Some people watched it for the horror of it all. Some little old ladies saw them as two bachelors that would make their daughters fine husbands one day and about 26 people probably watched it for the cooking.
They were famous for their onscreen bickering and ‘creative recipes’ – has any of this made it into the play? The show follows the greatest night of TV that the pair ever made in their entire lives. They start
off by calming their nerves with champagne. Peter is desperate to nail the turkey. Like any best laid plans things start to unravel. David starts drinking more. Peter is of the vintage, "if you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em". This is the Camp Family Christmas where everything that gayexpress.co.nz
could go wrong does go wrong. What’s so great about the characters is that they were genuinely funny and that really comes through on the screen. Actor Chris Parker is one of the finest improvisers in the country. His comedic skills are genuinely great. Todd who has been touring with Daffodils is also a trained chef. Without the skills of both of these talented actors, the show would be incredibly hard to perform. Who helped with your research for the play? The creation of this play was inspired by actress Rima Te Wiata who used to work with them. She was the worst waitress they’d ever had. She was so bad and they would scream at her from the kitchen. People absolutely loved it. Max Cryer also gave a great insight into their world and Tony Astle advised how they fitted into the high-end restaurant scene in Auckland. You mention Hudson and Halls to children of the eighties and they are excited, but what can young people expect to take away from the production? Outside of the story will be a wild and really, really funny experience. I make theatre that I want to see gayexpress.co.nz
and I see a lot of really boring theatre. This will not be that. We are going to transform the whole of the Herald Theatre including the foyer into a TV studio. It will be truly immersive. Come for the fun. The couple’s story ended tragically when Hudson died of cancer in 1992 and Halls, griefstricken, committed suicide the following year. Does any of this more somber element make it into Hudson & Halls Live!? We could have told the story heaps of different ways. We decided to make it live, telling the story in real time. You will get a sense of what their entire relationship was like. I want audiences to ask… oh god why are they like this?

Gay Ski Week QT! Queenstown, Saturday 29 August – Sunday 6 September. Photos and Words, Levi Joule. Gay Ski Week QT certainly didn’t disappoint, returning once more with nine events running across the week including a foam party, quiz night, skyline cabaret and to close the week a ‘once upon a time’ themed party. Every event was packed, leading organisers to consider next year’s cabaret night possibly being shifted to a bigger venue to accommodate the huge crowd! The week drew a diverse range of partygoers from across New Zealand, Australia and even a few from as far as the United States. Recognising the importance of the event to the local tourism industry, Queenstown got into the spirit of the week as well, with rainbow themed shop displays and gay pride flags flying all over the town. Organisers Sally and Mandy say the week was one of their most successful yet and planning for 2016’s event is well under way already. gayexpress.co.nz

OUR FIRST LADY Levi Joule chats with Liz Roberts and Alison Mau about First Lady, a book that tells the story of New Zealand’s sex change pioneer. Liz Roberts’ story is pretty remarkable. Gay Ski Week NZ Queenstown, Sunday 30 August – Sunday 6 September. Photos and Words, Levi Joule. Newcomers to Queenstown made an impressive debut this year with an action packed week with something for everybody. The first night’s welcoming drinks, intended to be a quiet affair, were anything but, with the party going well into the early hours. This set the pace for a full on week of events, including a ice skating party, VIP dinner, pool party at the Hilton and two dance parties featuring the legendary DJ Kitty Gliter, flown into Queenstown direct from New York. A largely Australian crowd spent the seven days soaking up all the fun that Queenstown had to offer, hitting the ski fields during the day, while partying away the nights. Organisers said the week exceeded expectations and they will be returning in 2016 when Queenstown will play host to another Gay Ski Week NZ. gayexpress.co.nz

HOW BEST TO SERVICE YOURSELF When we think about launching our bodies into spring, we are often talking about picking up the running, cycling and gym routines that may have lapsed over the winter months. However, launching straight into them can actually do more harm than good. I’ve spoken before about our bodies being like an engine, but now I want to liken our activities to race day of Formula One or even Bathurst if you’re that way inclined. These guys don’t just get the cars out of the garage on race day and off they go – there is a huge amount of preparation, just like there needs to be when getting back into exercise after quite some time off. Service yourself Think about your body like a race car - you need to get a tune up and service, and not in the usual way. A good detox with wheatgrass or other natural product will do the trick, and will certainly get you feeling better. Cutting out sugar and alcohol for a while won’t do any harm either.
getting the cornering and acceleration right. Getting back into activity is the same. Make sure your technique is right. Start with light weights at the gym, or a short, easy jog. Build up your stamina and strength slowly, and your body will thank you for it. Additives Just like those fuel additives that promise the world but never deliver, so too are there pre-workout drinks and powders that can do the same thing. Look for clean products from well-known and reliable sources, and don’t be driven by the picture on the pack. We all want that flawless sixpack, but training like a zombie isn’t the way to do it.
Mental attitude Eighty percent of what we want to achieve is mental. Drivers often talk about getting in the zone, knowing Lube job and fuel what they want to achieve and going Now we have cleaned out, we for it. This is the same for getting need to replace with good oil and back into fitness. It’s about having good fuel. This to me equates the willpower to say "no" to empty to good nutrition and the right calories, and saying "yes" to getting supplementation. Finding a highup at 6am on a grey, cold day to go quality protein without the chemical training. And of course, saying "yes" additives is a good start, and eating to pushing yourself a little bit more lots of seasonal veggies will keep each time. Getting the right thought nutrition levels high. patterns is essential. Ease into it The Formula One driver doesn’t just get in the car and go racing; they practice and build up, taking the time to learn new techniques, and gayexpress.co.nz

HOTTIE OF THE MONTH
Anisha S Yan October’s female hottie of the month, Anisha S Yan, has just finished a stint on the New Zealand Fashion Week catwalk. Anisha says she has long harbored a desire to model “I grew up reading Girlfriend and Dolly magazines. I would always look at the models in awe and it became a secret ambition of mine to delve into the fashion industry,” she explains. Her parents debate were not so keen on her modelling dream. “My parents are quite conservative so I had to wait till I had finished high school until I could seriously pursue modelling for myself.” Anisha finally got to realise her dream last year and her modelling career has gone from strength to strength. Anisha made her debut at NZFW last year - after only a couple of months of modelling. Anisha says she is unsure what the future holds but says simply that her long-term aspiration is “to be successful - whether that means making it big on an international stage, chasing other career alternatives (she is about to finish her bachelor of science with a double major in geography/ environmental science), or settling down and having a happy family, I have yet to find out!” Article, Levi Joule. Our schools are unfortunately still not all safe spaces for all young people and staff to be open about their sexuality or gender identity. Casual and even aggressive homophobia and transphobia are regular occurrences, even in seemingly inclusive learning communities. It is the responsibility of all boards, leaders, staff, and even student, to ensure out schools are safe spaces for all, and I think this needs to be a top priority for our community. Many of the issues stem from ignorance, so schools are in the perfect position to respond to these issues with open communication and education in acceptance and diversity.
Helen Clark Aunty Helen has gone on to bigger and better things since losing the Prime Ministership in 2008 and is odds on favourite to take over the top job at the UN doing NZ proud once again.
Family Bar’s Wayne Clarke With two hot new bars set to open, on K Road, Family Bar owner Wayne Clarke’s constant innovation means he has stayed firmly at the top of Auckland’s gay bar scene.
Tamati Coffey Our favourite ex weather presenter celebrated his birthday recently and from all accounts, his new bar Ponsomby Road in Rotorua still goes strong!

Body Positive’s Office Closure A tragic loss for those living with HIV/ AIDS in our nation’s capital.
Tony Abbott You won’t be missed.
What are some of the measures being taken to address these issues? Rainbow Youth has of course been working in this space for a long time (I worked with them before I started teaching) and they continue to raise awareness directly in schools and in Paul Stevens is a first year art teacher at Albany senior high school. the wider community around how He serves as the North Shore delegate for the Post Primary Teachers we can deal with homophobia and Association and has previously worked for RainbowYouth. transphobia in our schools. Double Passes to Robbie Williams Robbie Williams brings his Let Me Entertain You tour to Wellington’s Basin Reserve on Saturday 31 October.
Ask Agony Aunt Lisa Rainbow Counsellor Lisa Michelle is here to help with your problems. My girlfriend and I have been together for almost a year but I'm not sure how much longer I can stay with her. She gets upset all the time and I feel I'm walking on eggshells. If I say or do something she doesn't like, she storms off without even telling me what it is! I'm left confused and thinking I've done something wrong so I apologise and hug her and she's fine again. What shall I do?
My 15-year-old son has just come out to us and plans to come out at school. We don't mind that he's gay, but we are afraid of how others in our extended family and his school will react. My wife has become quite distressed over this, as it's her side of the family who we fear could do the most damage. I am not sure how to handle this and I'm worried for my wife and my son.
Pushing boundaries is a sign of seeking reassurance or stability - common in those who have grown up in an invalidating or unstable environment. So long as you are letting her, your girlfriend will continue to push to have her way. As Dr Phil says, "We teach others how to treat us". You are teaching her that no matter how emotionally draining her behaviour is, you will always allow it. How would you prefer your relationship to be? Let her know what is okay and what is not, and what the consequences will be if she continues this tirade - then, and most importantly, follow through.
Firstly, I am proud of you for reaching out for support. Your son is lucky to have you. I would be wary of the pressure your wife's distress may behaving on your son. He can not feel responsible for something he can not control. Your wife needs support and there is a group called Holding Our Own (HOO) who provide a safe space for parents of Rainbow kids to come together. I'd also suggest you arrange a meeting with the School Principal and ensure they have policies in place that will both support and protect their GLBTIQ students. Bless you for having your son's back.
Lisa Michelle is a Chaplain and Counsellor for the GLBT Community, working with both Rainbow Youth and OUTLine NZ as an independent consultant and also on the board of OUTLine. If you have an issue you would like Lisa to talk about in express, email and let her know at ask@gayexpress.co.nz.
