“I wanted the stories of Arab queers to be told - we are not all oppressed, even if we don’t come out,” the show’s co-writer Fabia Abboud told express, “We can’t give up our family for anything... its more act of selflessness than fear of repercussions,” she explained. GLBT shows often struggle to get high viewing rates on television but using the internet has allowed I Luv U But (screened on www. iluvubut.tv) and sexy Australian Lesbian drama series Starting From Now to achieve success by getting their stories out to worldwide audiences. Law Change Affects Sex in New Zealand An archaic law banning sale of non-latex condoms in NZ finally overturned. Affective from Thursday 1 May, an amendment to the Contraception, Sterilisation, and Abortion Act approved by Minister of Health Tony Ryall, has allowed non-latex condoms to be sold in New Zealand. This includes Ansell’s internationally popular Skyn condoms for men made from polyisoprene and the FC2 female condoms made from nitrile. Jane Bruning of Positive Women Inc who contributed to the campaign the law change, says, “The Female Condom empowers women to take control over their sexual health and safety making it an important option for women.” gayexpress.co.nz

Troy’s Body Positive Moving on from a headline making month, Mr Gay New Zealand Troy Williams focuses on assisting HIV charity.

Good News For People Living With HIV

After helping to launch the Outtakes festival on Thursday 24 May, Troy Williams told express that he is now focusing on working with charity Body Positive. Body Positive provides support to people living with HIV.

Study shows people living with HIV who are on medication and have a fully suppressed viral load, present a zero-risk of passing on the virus to sexual partners. Body Positive CEO Bruce Kilmister says, “This is the most welcome piece of news people living with HIV have had in years. I hope it will help to reduce the stigma out there as most people living with HIV in New Zealand are on treatment and have excellent control of their virus. The real worry is that we estimate one in five gay men living with HIV in New Zealand is unaware of his status.” When asked if this could mean the end of condom use Bruce Kilmister said “God no – we are getting alarming reports about other sexually transmitted diseases. Over 80% of syphilis in this country is reported in gay men and we now have over 90 co-infected patients at Auckland Hospital who have HIV and Hepatitis C infection, which can be sexually transmitted.”

Trans Girl Takes on National Model Contest On Friday 2 May, 18-year-old trans-girl Amy Brosnahan will realise her dream of becoming a model when she competes on the catwalk with over 30 girls to win Battle Of The Babes. It has been a busy month for Amy who made it to the Auckland final of the competition, only to be told by the organisers that she could not be involved when she revealed she was trans. Pressure from trans rights groups led to the organisers inviting her back into the contest, and the resulting media storm, saw Brosnahan interviewed by Paul Henry. “He was lovely,” she tells express. “I’m a big fan – he’s so honest!” The night after her television appearance, she bussed into town and was one of seven girls from Auckland picked to make it to the national final. “It took me at least 30 seconds to get out of my seat when my name was called. I was so shocked I couldn’t uncross my feet.” Despite feeling nervous that she might recieve a negative reaction from the crowd and other contestants, Brosnahan was loudly cheered as she walked on stage, and says all the contestants were supportive.” She is ‘super eager’ about competing in the national finals and is looking for victory! “I’m definitely hoping I’ll win!” She exclaims.

Williams says he was impressed with their work and is keen to raise funds and raise awareness of the charity. “I can only imagine how tough it must be for someone diagnosed with HIV to try to readjust their life,” he tells us. “Being gay I know what it’s like to come out and feel some people are judging you and to have to come out as HIV and face that stigma even from members of your own community must be really hard.” Williams is currently brainstorming ‘novel fundraising ideas’, with a focus of getting the message of the importance of regular testing to younger gay men. “I know a lot of Gen Y’s who have a ‘meh, I’ll do it tomorrow’ attitude when it comes to looking after their own health.” Photo | Jarrad Mapp for express gayexpress.co.nz

MEET OUR COMMUNITY

Dancing with Politics What Now for Tamati Coffey Oliver Hall sat down with Labour’s new candidate for Rotorua, one of the GLBT community’s national gems Tamati Coffee. The former What Now presenter and Dancing with the Stars winner discusses his life, loves, pride and politics.

What drives Tamati Coffey? I have an inner drive to always want better for myself. Why politics? Because I want to make sure that the future of our country is a great one for everybody and not just for the elite few at the top. The only way that you can do that is by getting in at the decisionmaking table. Why Labour? I’m the son of factory workers, Mum has been a union worker for most of her life. Labour’s values: equality, opportunity, kotahitanga - are my values. Labour has a proud history, filled with great personalities and as a party, has helped shape New Zealand’s future to make it a positive one. Why Rotorua? My whanau have been here for hundreds of years. Mum ran away from Rotorua when she was 17 years old, because there was no vision for young people. The situation hasn’t changed all that much. Our young people are still heading offshore to Australia, which is seen as the land of opportunity. I want to be part of the future vision for Rotorua, one which inspires people, young and old, to stay. How do you feel your sexuality will affect your chances of winning in Rotorua? We’re living in the modern world. I feel sorry for those good people in the past, that might not have been able to stand for elected positions because they were gay or lesbian. It was a different time back then. Thankfully, we’ve moved on and I am part of the new generation that will be judged on their ability to create change, as opposed to their sexuality. gayexpress.co.nz

Who do you see as being your toughest opponents for the Rotorua seat, and what do you think of them? Todd McClay is the National Party’s incumbent Rotorua MP and he has done some good things, but lots of bad too. He was the MP that put the ‘legal’ in ‘legal highs’ and it’s something that is ripping families in our town apart. After the Bill was put into law, it was his job to ensure the implementation of it, but something has gone terribly wrong. What do you intend to do about ‘legal highs’ if you are elected? I will do the hard yards to investigate the situation and clear things up so that it doesn’t continue to damage our young people and families. The implementation has gone wrong and the onus needs to be put back on the manufacturers who are rolling in profit, to society’s detriment. Do you think politics will be more cutthroat than television? I reckon it’s pretty darn similar to be honest! Are you ready for politics? Yes. Does this mean the end of your television career? No. I’ll just be on a different channel that’s all. Parliament TV! Who is the greatest Politcian New Zealand has ever had? Parekura Horomia. He was a politician that was loved by his people, still was able to make strong decisions, with heart and didn’t have to resort to being a mongrel in Parliament. He was ever the gentleman and his legacy is strong and will live on. What are the five most important moments

that have shaped your life thus far? 1. Coming out. It enabled me to start my life. 2. Graduating from University. I was the first in my family. 3. Getting the job on What Now. I was the kid that sat up early in the morning trying to win things by phone. 4. Winning Dancing With the Stars. It was a public display of potential disaster. 5. Getting the nod to stand for the Labour Party in Rotorua. The most beautiful place in the country – in my opinion! What would make you die happy? If it was my time, I would die happy tomorrow. I’ve done lots of things that I am proud of and have lived every moment to the fullest. I’d die even happier if I was able to get into Parliament, have a successful career in it and leave a legacy that I was proud of. What has been your proudest achievement in your life thus far? That I’ve been able to move forward and upward in a positive direction, whilst still being true to myself. I have a proud set of values that I haven’t compromised in my haphazard and crazy career so far. What do you believe GLBT people in New Zealand have left to fight for? I believe that our trans community have been left behind in the equality debate and we need to commit time and energy to ensuring that they are supported in our society to be free from the prejudice that was rife for us gay and lesbian people not so long ago. THEATRE

His Big Break Tells Our Big Story Sam Snedden scored his first Auckland Theatre Compnay role in Once on Chunuk Bair, he sat down with Sam Brookes to discuss actin and war. Sitting right in the middle of 2014 Auckland’s theatre calendar, and coming on the centenary of the first shots fired in World War I, The Auckland Theatre Company’s production of Once On Chunuk Bair is positioning itself as a must-see. Despite being written by Maurice Shadbolt (Season of the Jew) and being a popular study tool in high schools, Once on Chunuk Bair has only been performed professionally twice before; for the play’s premiere in 1982 and again in 1989. It tells the story of the Wellington Regiment who are tasked with defending the recently captured Chunuk Bair. However, a Turkish counter-attack means their success is only fleeting. One of the actors in this new

production is Sam Snedden (a regular face to Auckland theatregoers, thanks to memorable performances in Silo plays like The Pride and Private Lives) plays one of these soldiers. He says the play is part of a broader shift in the way that we as New Zealanders look at history, “traditionally history was about monarchy, but increasingly history is about individuals … a story about a king can feel distant, but a story about a person who is just like you who ended up in a horrible situation, causes you to reflect on what you would do.” Once on Chunuk Bair plays from Thursday 12 June to Saturday 5 July at The Maidment Theatre, 8 Alfred Steet, Auckland. A Working Man From brothels to runways, Oliver Hall examines the roller coaster career of Aiden Shaw.

Aiden Shaw is a true enigma, and if Kate Moss proves anything – fashion loves enigmas. Shaw has not conducted interviews since 2012 when a shoot he did with GQ magazine in Berlin lead him to be signed to Success Models and Sight Management, who realised his weathered but handsome good looks, piercing eyes and signature beard could make the silver-fox 48-year-old the go-to face for clothing brands trying to appeal to mature males. Shoots with Vogue, Harpers Bizarre and CR Fashion Book confirmed they were right as Shaw successfully posed as a rugged outdoorsman and dinner-party sophisticate with equal conviction. Becoming one of the world’s top male models is yet another surprising twist in Shaw’s career. In the early nineties, after treading the boards at a brothel in London, armed with a near foot-long phallus, British-born Shaw headed to Los Angeles and became one of gay porn’s biggest stars, taking protagonist roles in over 50 films including the likes of Black Leather White Studs, Perfect Fit and Forced Entry. He would leave the industry in 99, two years after contracting HIV and having experienced success as a novelist and poet. After his third novel Wasted was released in 2001 Shaw’s writing slowed. Earning additional dollars as a sex-worker to the stars, Shaw’s disposable income enabled his recreational drug use to turn into addiction, all of which he would talk about when his tell-all autobiography My Undoing was finally released in 2006. After collecting a Masters in Creative Writing, he released a second gayexpress.co.nz

autobiography Sordid Truths in 2009. Promoting the book in an interview with Butt Magazine Shaw admitted “I wouldn’t wish my life on anybody.” At the time he was just 5 months sober, living in a council flat in London and admitted to letting his mum pay for dinner because she had more money than him. But with sobriety came success and just four years later he was living in Barcelona gracing fashion editorials the world over. It was in January this year that Shaw first arrived on our shores at the invitation of Kiwi label Working Style. “Aiden’s look is iconic in the global luxury market,” says Working Style’s creative director, Eddie von Dadelszen, who selected Shaw as the face of their new collection. “His multigenerational appeal felt to be a very natural fit for both the heritage aspect of our brand and the spirit of classical modernity that our autumn / winter 2014 collection portrays.” He says, assuring us that Shaw was a pleasure to work with, “his professionalism on-set paired with his personal aesthetic attest to why he is one of the world’s leading male models right now.” At 48 Shaw has fulfilled his own prophecy, by being more desired than ever. As he told Index magazine back in 2004, “I believe you can grow old and still be desirable. I came of age during a time when hitting forty meant you’d survived the AIDS epidemic. I want to celebrate that.” What bigger celebration is there than success? Article | Oliver Hall

GAY FILM FESTIVAL

Celluloid Stunners Sam Brookes’ top five flicks from Out Takes 2014. Out Takes is always an exciting event in any Auckland cinephile’s calendar. Where other film festivals throughout the year seem to lack in queer content, Out Takes more than fills this need with queer films from all around the world, from feel-good comedies to gritty historical dramas to incisive documentaries. Alongside are my personal picks that I’ll be looking out for in the festival, in no particular order:

I Feel Like Disco Billed as a German tragi-comedy, this tells the story of a recently bereaved gay teenager and his strict diving coach father learning to cope with each other’s worlds. If ‘German tragicomedy’ isn’t enough to turn you onto a film, the promise of a delicate account of a difficult relationship between a gay teenager and his tough dad should be.

In The Name Of… Coming off a Teddy Award at the Berlin Film Festival, this doesn’t need my recommendation. The subject matter alone, a Catholic priest in rural Poland working with troubled teenagers coming to terms with his own sexual feelings, is almost begging to be watched. A story of queer male desire coming from a female director, also piques my interest.

The Out Takes Film Festival runs from Thurs 22 May – Mon 2 June at Rialto Cinemas, Newmarket, Auckland. From Thurs 29 May – Wed 11 June at the Paramount cinema

GAY FILM FESTIVAL

It Gets Better The Thai cinema scene is one that has always had me intrigued with their lyrical style and left-field narratives, but with the exception of Apichatpong Weerasethakul, few Thai films ever get to our shores. That alone is enough to get me to see this film, but the actual focus of the film, which follows three Thai lady-boys on their quests for acceptance, whether it be from family or community or from within, sounds like it’ll be a must-see.

Molly’s Girl A fun-sounding comedy, the film follows Mercedes, a gay-marriage activist who is dumped by her girlfriend at the start of the film, who meets Molly, a straight girl she ends up having a one night stand with. When she finds out Molly’s father is an influential senator who opposes gay marriage, she hatches a plan. A comedy with a serious political bent is sometimes what the doctor ordered and Molly’s Girl looks to deliver.

Getting Go: The Go Doc Project A truly modern queer film; a film student who has the unlikely name Doc is desperate to meet his online obsession: A hot go-go dancer with the similarly unlikely name, Go. He asks him if he would like to be interviewed, and Go agrees to this. This sounds like it could be one of the lighter films in the festival, but the modern bent has me intrigued! A Cheeky Night Out K’ Road’s Encore Cabaret revamp Ladies Night like you’ve Never Seen Before! The concept was simple director Chris Mears told us. Take the classic New Zealand comedy about a motley bunch of male strippers, give it a fresh new cast of experienced up and comers and stage it in a venue designed to host strippers! Mears feel by doing this, “We’ve been able to give this popular play a new injection of reality!” “We wanted to actually provide an atmosphere that is so true to the story that the audience will actually feel as if they are part of the experience,” he tells us and Encore does seem the perfect venue if you want to get close to the action and who wouldn’t with cuties like Alex Bevin and Alex Ewan (pictured) taking on lead roles. Ladies Night starts from Saturday 3 May and will continue throughout the month every Tuesday to Saturday. For booking visit www.iticket.co.nz or call 09 361 1000. express’ guide of GLBT Comics

In highlights from www.gayexpress. co.nz series, Sam Orchard searches his shelves for the erotic alumni of gay graphic novels. We live in a time where geek has become chic and every blockbuster movie and sci-fi show has originated from a graphic novel or comic book. GLBT comics are a sub-genre of this massive and influential industry and have a long history of predominantly exploring erotic stories in comic form. For Sam’s full A-Z guide check

out our website. Here are a few tasty tid-bits of the most note-worthy illustrated epics: B. Billy Goes Out – Howard Cruse Howard Cruse needs an article all to himself; he is one of the most important authors of gay comics – particularly his graphic novel Stuck Rubber Baby. Billy Goes Out is a short story that was published in the first issue of Gay Comix (one of the longest-running underground comic anthologies) and details the

journey of an emerging gay guy heading out on the town to pick up. Set before the outbreak of AIDS, but written afterwards, the comic is an important reflection from an historically important time. C. Colleen Coover Colleen Coover has created a wide variety of comics, and currently writes for Marvel’s X-Men. However, in the early 2000’s she penned an incredible “girly porno comic collection entitled Small Favors.

Small Favors is an incredibly funny, light, and almost Disney-esque comic series about ladies who love making love with other ladies. F. Patrick Fillion Hot super heroes with giant cocks. Magdalene For sexy sci-fi erotica of various genders, sexualities, and preferences look no further than M.Magdalene’s Curvy comic! www.c.urvy.org/ N. No Straight Lines No Straight Lines is Justin Hall’s recent

anthology that details the history of GLBT comics. This is an incredible collection of underground gay comics, and emerging GLBTIartists. A wee gem. P. Young Protectors The Young Protectors is a recent web comic that has popped up on (gay webcomic website) Yaoi911 in the last two years. It tells the story of a closeted superhero Kyle, who finds himself rising to power. It’s incredibly drawn and colored, and hella romantic.

R. Trina Robbins Trina Robbins is an old school feminist comics writer, and the author of the first comic strip to feature an ‘out’ lesbian Sandy Comes Out. For those interested in classic comics, her work can be found in the ‘Wimmens Comix’ from the 1970s. T. Tom of Finland Tom of Finland, aka Touko Laakonsen, is one of the founding fathers of gay erotic images. His work is easily recognisable for muscle men in tight

clothing, and fetish gear. He was producing underground comics as early as the 1940s, and often sold to mainstream publications such as Physique Pictorial – a ‘men’s health’ magazine. U. Unusual Sexiness – AKA Hentai While Hentai can be used as a catchall for all manga erotica, it’s also used to describe particularly unusual sex – y’know octopus sex, for example! John Waters The gay love child of Quentin Crisp and Roger Corman; John Waters is the patron saint of queer trash cinema. Mostly known for the musical hairspray (1988) and its modern 2008 remake, Waters began his career making kitschy exploitation films with the Dreamlanders troupe of performers; whose manifesto was to above all appal, offend, and scandalise. This they achieved with aplomb in early features Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble and Polyester, all staring the incomparable Divine Brown, Waters’ transvestite muse whose fearlessness lends these films ms their scatological edge. After the success off Hairspray, Waters turned, with varying degrees ees of success, towards the mainstream with the Johnny Depp-staring Cry-Baby, and nd the riotous Kathleen Turner-staring Serial rial Mom, his most accessible film after Hairspray.

Gregg Araki Volitile, sexually subversive and brimming with anger, Araki’s early works The Living End, Totally F**ked Up and The Doom Generation captured what it meant to be young and queer in a materialistic world physically and socially hostile to any form of self-expression. The yearning for identity common to this early period carry through to Araki’s modern, mature phase, beginning with what is regarded as his masterpiece: Mysterious Skin, a Scott Helm adaptation chronicling two young men united by an early trauma, and the increasingly experienced by both devastating fallout ex in early adulthood. Amongst these are a (Smiley Face), a gay-spin pot-comedy (Sm on Beverly Hills 9 90210 (Nowhere), and a drama (Splendor), assuring polygamy dram matter your sensibilities, that no ma will - without fail Arraki w challenge them. challe

Rainer Werner Fassbinder In 13 years Fassbinder created 40 wildly diverse feature films, not to mention stage plays, short films and acting roles too numerous to count. The prodigious talent that was German Director Fassbinder lived a short tumultuous life, from which it is difficult to separate art from reputation. Ranging from reinterpreting a Douglas Sirkmelodrama as a comment on racism, to examining the psychological baggage of changing one’s sex, Fassbinder brought a deep empathy to the outcasts of post-war German society in their common search for stability and intimacy. His effervescent work ethic, however, eventually led to his death in 1982 from an overdose of cocaine and barbiturates, leaving behind a back catalogue of misfit protagonists overflowing with emotion and craft. Tayor is the reason we all love a good girl gone bad. The 20 year old started her career as a movie actress, before becoming Jenny Humphrey on the bitchy series Gossip Girl. Jump forward five years, Taylor has left acting behind and become a fully-fledged member of the church of rock and roll. Her band, The Pretty Reckless have just released their second album Going To Hell. Having toured with the likes of Marilyn Manson and Evanescence, Taylor can rock out with the best of them. Her rock’n’roll looks have also scored her gigs as the face of Galliano, UK high-street staple New Look and Madonna’s Material Girl fashion line. Now guess where that crucifix ends?

REVIEW

Brunch at its Best Mark Garrison immerses himself in eggs at The Officers Mess. Sunday brunch has always been my favourite meal of the week, and judging from the jammed packed cafes around town, the same holds true for a lot of people. The Officers Mess at Fort Takapuna has been attracting hungry diners to lovely Narrow Neck Beach, for its beautiful food and terrific views of Rangitoto Island and the Hauraki Gulf. The lovingly restored building is open for brunch only on Sundays (9 am – 2.30 pm), the rest of the time serving as a gay-friendly wedding venue. Chef Jeremy Schmid, who formerly owned 215 Bistro on Dominion Rd, is in charge at The Officers Mess and his breakfasts are truly fabulous. The eggs benedict with bacon or salmon ($18.50), feature perfectly poached eggs and a blissfully rich and delicious hollandaise. The big breakfast with bacon, eggs, field mushrooms, vine tomatoes, sausages and potato hash ($20.50)

was beautifully presented and well-proportioned. French toast with cinnamon roast pears and mascarpone ($17.50) was also a crowd pleaser and seeing the homemade muesli, yogurt and seeped berries ($13.50) pass by, made me long for a larger stomach. The highlight of the menu however is the smoked fish cakes with poached eggs, pea shoots and hollandaise ($18.50). The cakes were mouthwateringly moist and flavourful and played off perfectly against the richness of the eggs and sauce. Service was speedy and friendly and the coffee well-prepared. The room, bathed in sunlight, is calm and tranquil and on sunny Sundays there is seating on the large patio. A terrific place for a languid Sunday brunch. The Officer’s Mess at Fort Takapuna can be found at 170 Vauxhall Road, Narrow Neck, Auckland. Article | Mark Garrison

Only God Forgives We just can’t stop staring at Ryan Gosling and here he can be found in one of his grittiest roles as a boxer and drug dealer, forced by his family to seek vengance in Bangkok’s seedy underworld. Check out Kristin Scott Thomas’ show stopping performance as his hardened mother.

Therese D One of the many French films premiering this month, Francois Mauriac’s book is brought to life in one of Claude Miller’s final films. Audrey Tautou takes the title role as an unhappily married woman struggling to conform as an ideal country wife and to fit into her husband’s oppressive family.

Laurence Anyways Five-time Cannes winner Canadian Xavier Dolan chronicles a decade between the moment when Laurence tells his girlfriend that he wants to become a woman and still be together. The film won the Queer Palm award and the Un Certain Regard - Best Actress for Suzanne Clément as Lawrence’s girlfriend.

Ask Lisa Rainbow Counsellor Lisa Michelle is here to help with your problems. My partner and I have been together for almost a year, and I thought at last I had found Mr Right. He is really sweet most of the time, but if he sees me talking to other guys he goes off his nut. I have found him reading my messages on my phone, and he won’t let me go anywhere without him. He says he loves me and wants to protect me, but I’m no longer the outgoing guy I was because I don’t want to upset him. What can I do?

Presenting some of the finest winter

It sounds like you are in a relationship with someone who is very insecure. Talking to other guys is not a crime, and never a reason to lose your cool. If you are flirting with other guys then that is a different story, if you know flirting upsets him. Reading your private correspondence is not okay, and insisting on going everywhere with you is unhealthy, as you are two separate beings choosing to share life together, not two people connected at the hip. What concerns me the most, however, is that you are allowing his moods and behaviour to change who you are. Get out before it’s too late.
