Frisse nieuwe wind bij The Bronx

Vele oudere (en minder oudere) Amsterdammers zullen The Bronx wel kennen als een weliswaar vertrouwde maar ook wat oubollige gay shop. De oudste gay shop van Amsterdam bedient haar klanten al sinds 1976 vanuit de lekker centrale locatie in de Kerkstraat, om de hoek van de Leidsestraat en vlakbij de populaire homo uitgaansgelegenheden de Spijker en Club Church.

Frisse nieuwe wind

Sinds vorig jaar is echter een nieuwe wind gaan waaien in de winkel. ‘En dat was ook hard nodig’ volgens de nieuwe store manager, Wouter Geurtsen; ‘de loop was er een beetje uit. De inrichting was nog uit de tijd van videocabines en veel collecties waren verouderd. Als eerste hebben we de Corona-golf aangegrepen als moment om het interieur grondig onder handen te nemen. Weg met die donkere kleuren en massieve meubels. Nu is alles lekker licht en open, een verademing was dat.’ ‘Vroeger was The Bronx echt puur een gay shop maar ook daar hebben we bewust een vernieuwingsslag op gemaakt. Ten eerste is Amsterdam niet meer de Gay Capital die het vroeger was; de stad heeft niet meer haar internationale aantrekkingskracht op de internationale gay toerist. Hoewel de winkel als echte Amsterdamse winkel nooit echt afhankelijk was van toerisme, we merkten dat wel natuurlijk, net zoals alle gay stores en bars dat doen.’ Maar de winkel signaleerde ook dat de samenleving aan het veranderen is en wilde daar ook op inspelen: “Vooral na Fifty Shades of Grey merkten we dat’, vervolgt Wouter Geurtsen, ‘maar ook in het algemeen. ‘Seksualiteit en het hele denken over gender en hoe je vorm geeft aan je intieme leven is veel opener geworden, veel vloeiender. Natuurlijk is het belangrijk dat onze oude homo-doelgroep zich thuis blijft voelen en goed bediend wordt en blijft worden in de winkel. Maar we merken ook een veel grotere belangstelling van vrouwen, stelletjes en van wat ik zou omschrijven als queer folk voor de winkel, en dan met name voor de speeltjes, en dat is natuurlijk super’.

’Toen de winkel een nieuwe richting in wilde slaan is dus gelijk duidelijk gekozen voor een verbreding van de doelgroep en assortiment, en dan met name qua seksspeeltjes.’ ‘Amsterdam heeft al genoeg goede fetish stores, dat ging hem niet worden. Maar er is behoefte aan een echte toy specialist store waar je ongeacht je gender, seksualiteit en leeftijd naar toe kunt gaan en waar je veel keuze hebt – met bijbehorende informatie en service van de medewerkers’.

Natuurlijk is Gay News een kijkje gaan nemen in de vernieuwde winkel. En inderdaad, het is een mooie lichte winkel geworden met veel spannende toys, vaak ook niet al te duur. We vroegen Chris en Ricardo, de jongens van de winkel, natuurlijk ook naar het laatste nieuws: ‘We hebben net PUMP Underwear binnen, geweldig!’ aldus de boys. En inderdaad: naast de zeer uitgebreide toy collectie is deze prachtige ondergoed-collectie een lust voor het oog. Dus het is echt waar: The Bronx heeft zich verjongd, van Gay shop naar Erotic Lifestyle Store.

THE BRONX: FROM GAY SHOP TO EROTIC LIFESTYLE STORE

Many older (and younger) Amsterdammers will be familiar with The Bronx as a somewhat old-fashioned gay shop. The oldest gay shop in Amsterdam has been serving its customers since 1976 from its wonderfully central location on Kerkstraat, close to the popular gay night-life spots Spijker Bar and Club Church. Fresh Approach Since last year, however, there was a wind of change blowing. “And that was badly needed’ according to the new store manager, Wouter Geurtsen, as “the shop wasn’t that popular any more. The furnishings were from the time of video booths, and many collections were outdated. First of all, we seized the moment that was forced upon us by COVID-19 to redecorate. We got rid of these dark colours and our massive furniture. Now everything is light and open, which is a great relief.

The Bronx used to be purely a gay shop, but we have also deliberately made a conscious effort to innovate there. First of all, Amsterdam is no longer the Gay Capital it used to be; the city no longer has the international appeal for gay tourist Amsterdam was famous for. Although the store was never completely dependent on tourism, we have noticed a decline, as did all other gay stores and bars.

New Direction But the store also saw that society is changing and wanted to incorporate that change: “Especially after Fifty Shades of Grey”, Wouter Geurtsen adds, “but also in general. Sexuality and the general

ideas about gender and how you shape your intimate life has become much more open, much more fluid. Naturally it is important that our old gay target group continues to feel at home here and is well-served. But we also noticed a much greater interest from women, couples and what I would describe as queer folk, especially in the toys, and that’s wonderful of course. When the management of the store decided to go in a new direction, it was immediately decided to broaden the target group and range, especially in terms of sex toys. Amsterdam has enough good fetish stores already, so going in that direction was unwise. But there is a need for a real toy specialist store where you can go regardless of your gender, sexuality and age, and where you have a lot of choice - with corresponding information and client service.” Having A Look Naturally, Gay News had a look at the renovated store. It has indeed turned into a friendly store, freshly and brightly decorated, with many exciting toys that are often not too expensive.

We also asked Chris and Ricardo, the guys from the store, about the latest news: “We just received some PUMP Underwear, great!” say the boys. And indeed: in addition to the very extensive toy collection, this beautiful underwear collection is a sight for sore eyes. It is definitely true: The Bronx has rejuvenated itself - from Gay Shop to Erotic Lifestyle Store.
