THINGS TO DO

DAY OF THE

IGUANA By John McCloud

When John Huston, Richard Burton, Deborah Kerr and Ava Gardner arrived in Puerto Vallarta in 1962 to film the Tennessee Williams play The Night of the Iguana, the city had only a few thousand residents. Though a small coterie of adventurous travelers had been coming to the small beach town since the early '50s, Vallarta was far off standard tourist maps. There were no large hotels or luxury inns, and the notion of million-dollar condos overlooking the bay was beyond conception. But within weeks of the crew's arrival, things changed dramatically, with the bayfront village making front-page news and journalists and photographers descending en masse to implant the image of Puerto Vallarta in the imagination of millions of movie fans around the globe. It wasn't the movie itself that attracted the attention but rather the illicit affair between Burton, the film's primary star, and Elizabeth Taylor, who had tagged along to be with her paramour. The fact that both were married to other people at the time made their romance a major scandal.

More than 50 years later, The Night of the Iguana remains entrenched in the city's history, but things have changed so much that only a few physical reminders of the film remain. You can make a quick tour of them in a single day. Begin at Casa Kimberly (Zaragoza 445) a few blocks above the main church. Liz stayed here during filming, and afterward Burton bought the home for her. The couple, who liked Vallarta so much they continued visiting for years after, subsequently bought a neighboring casa to house guests, connecting the structures with a bridge spanning the street. Taylor sold the properties in 1990 and bought a new home in Marina Vallarta, but the casas remain, drawing a steady stream of gawkers. Huston lived several miles south of town at Las Caletas; you can visit his estate as part of the “Rhythms of the Night” tour.

10

What time is it? • ¿Qué hora es?

The movie was shot south of town at Playa Mismaloya, then accessible only by boat. The set remains standing but has fallen into disrepair and been fenced off. At night the cast and crew hung out at the beachfront bar and restaurant of Hotel El Dorado (now condominiums, at Amapas and Púlpito), the only hotel south of the river at the time. It quickly became the social gathering spot for the entire town. Though the restaurant has gone through multiple owners and redesigns, it's still a popular hangout. Shortly before Huston's death in 1987, his personal chef, Archie Alpenia, opened Archie's Wok two blocks away at Francisca Rodríguez 130. The highly-regarded Asian fusion restaurant (still operated by Archie’s wife Cyndi, daughter Kiyoki and son Sergio) continues to draw big crowds.

John McCloud has been a professional free-lance journalist for more than 30 years. He has written regularly for the New York Times, World Architecture, California Real Estate Journal and many other publications.

For other reminders of the movie, a somewhat cheesy statue of Burton and Taylor stands inside the Fuente del Puente restaurant near the north end of the Insurgentes bridge. Below the bridge, on Isla Cuale, is a classier statue of Huston. The most peculiar tribute to the stars has to be the Elizabeth Taylor Theater at 5 de Febrero 265, which now shows porno movies.

ACTIVIDADES

At night, Burton and frequent guest actor Peter O'Toole would often meet Huston a few blocks from Casa Kimberly at the bar in Hotel Océano (Paseo Díaz Ordaz 565), where reportedly they would drink till they passed out. The hotel is closed, but the bar, under different owners and renamed Océano Tropical, has remained, though it has moved upstairs to what had been the hotel's restaurant.

PART I: Discovery

PARTE I: Descubrimiento

The onset of fame of Puerto Vallarta as a gay destination goes back many years. It is imperative to go back to when Puerto Vallarta started to become known throughout the world. Know the different factors that together made the miracle of a gay destination in one of the most macho of Mexico states. We will test different theories circulating by word of mouth, which try to identify the start of gay life in our city. Join me to know the interesting story in the voices

When can I see you again? • ¿Cuándo nos vemos de Nuevo?

Being located on the coast at the foot of the mountains, without any means of communication except the water, made Puerto Vallarta a beautiful typical village isolated from the supply of building materials that could change its architecture. If we add this to the friendly people, beautiful beaches and forests, we have a potential tropical destination. It only needed to be discovered.

In mid-1938 a group of teens stole the yacht of Mr. Lou Foote, owner of an aviation company in the port of Aptos, California. The boys had planned an adventure to South America, but when reaching the Bay of Banderas, they realized their lack of food and fuel. Having no other choice they had to port with no gas and broken engines. Authorities examined the yacht and promptly proceeded to arrest the teens as they did not have any documentation. Mr. Foote had already reported to all ports the loss of his boat. Once the boys confessed, authorities contacted Mr. Foote who quickly moved came to Vallarta in his own plane accompanied by a consul. been urged to prosecute the young offenders, but being a compassionate person he decided instead to take them back onto his yacht and give them jobs as sailors. The charm of the port at that time caught Mr. Foote, who thought that was a paradise Vallarta and he loved the place. He went back to California, only to return to Vallarta with more visitors, who, in turn, spread the "discovery" of this tropical corner and all the attributes that surround it. This was the beginning that attracted visitors who year after year would increase, gradually giving Puerto Vallarta its vocation as a tourist destination. This is a small excerpt from part one of Our Story So Far. There will be more installments each month on our website and in the next edition of GAY PV.

TRICEP LIFTS: Put a sturdy chair against a wall. With your back to the chair reach back and place both hands on the chair. Put your feet out in front of you so that your body weight is transferred to your shoulders and triceps. Steady yourself in a comfortable safe position. Slowly lower your upper body until your triceps are perpendicular with the chair and floor. Hold for five seconds and push up to straighten out your arm. This is one rep. Complete three sets of as many reps as will fatigue your muscle.

For Sweat Collection owners and married couple Tal Thompson and Ron Smith, a daily jog along the malecón is one of the many things they enjoy when in Puerto Vallarta. Since forming Sweat Collection three years ago, they have found it very natural to mix business with pleasure. You may see them doing photo shoots at Los Muertos Beach, hosting an event at one of the many PV night clubs, or spending the afternoon zip lining. They decided to create their own workout gear that was a matching fit to underwear, keeping the same high quality construction, breathable fabric, and supersoft, non-pinching waistbands as their briefs. “Men are in much better shape now than our fathers were at our age, and they want to show off what they've earned at the gym. They want choices in clothes that look and feel sexy”, says Smith. Both Tal and Ron love to meet customers, so if you see them wandering the local scene in Puerto Vallarta, please stop and say hello. Would you like a drink? • ¿Te invite una copa?
