UP FRONT NORTHWEST WISCONSIN - Temperatures rose into the 30s this past weekend, a 60-degree rise in temperature from the beginning of last week. The polar vortex that plunged Wisconsin and most of the country into extreme cold has retreated, meaning the jet stream has moved north with the cold air. Tasos Kallas, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Green Bay, says last week the jet stream dipped much farther south than it normally does. “Now the jet stream has come a little farther north,â€? he said, referring to the snowstorm early this week. “That’s what’s led to this (week’s) system coming across Wisconsin as opposed to driving down toward St. Louis and Memphis as it has in the past.â€? This week’s weather system brought snow to many areas of Wisconsin and winds gusting up to 40 miles per hour in some parts of the state. Otherwise Kallas characterizes this week’s storm as “typicalâ€? for January in Wisconsin. - with information from Patty Murray/Wisconsin Public Radio ••• ST.
