A club of one Luck senior is the lone National Merit Scholar finalist in the region by Greg Marsten LUCK – Luck senior Mary MaidenMuller is arguably an exceptional student, but until a recent fundraising supper at Luck High School, she had no idea just how exceptional she was. “I was at the lasagna supper on Friday night when Mr. (Mark) Gobler came up to me and congratulated me for being a National Merit Scholarship finalist,” Maiden-Muller said with a grin. “I didn’t even know!” To say she is part of an exclusive club is an understatement. Out of the hundreds of high school students in northwestern Wisconsin, and the thousands who apply for the honor and the award,
she is the lone local finalist for a National Merit Scholarship. There are numerous requirements to reach that level of recognition, including high scores on PSAT/NMSQT tests, documentation of school course work, community service, extracurriculars and the all-important essay. Maiden-Mueller then took the SATs in the Twin Cities to solidify her chances. All that is left for her to find out is whether she will receive a monetary award from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation itself or from the college she chooses to attend. “I’m pretty sure I’m going to Luther College in Iowa,” Maiden-Mueller said. “Pretty sure it’s where I’m meant to be.” Maiden-Mueller makes no apologies about her serious attitude for learning. In fact, while many students would cherish some time out of class to have a private media discussion, Maiden-
