Midnight witness New Year’s celebrations combine with a full moon for a ride-along by Greg Marsten BALSAM LAKE – The full moon glowed like a million-watt, warm azure night-light above us as Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy Nathan Ferris slipped the Dodge Charger police
cruiser into drive and slid into the night. It was two hours before the New Year, 2010. And while the moon glow gave the subzero landscape a surreal trace of shadows, it also is a traditional trigger for all sorts of bizarre behavior. Yes, it really was a “blue moon” – meaning the second full moon of the month - but it was also the traditionally biggest drinking night of the year
