Early snowmelt combined with warm and windy weather have created extremely high wildfire danger, according to Grantsburg Fire Chief Derek Zeiler. DNR officials suspended burning permits last week and warn residents to use caution with fire outdoors. The Grantsburg, Siren and Webster fire departments, along with DNR personnel from Webster, Minong and Spooner, responded to a 3.2-acre fire in a wooded area along Spaulding Road, Tuesday, March 30. During the same time, the Grantsburg DNR, Crex Meadows DNR and the Webster Ranger Station personnel were assisting in fighting another fire located in Sterling Township in Polk County that burned 100 acres. - Photo by Priscilla Bauer

Sixth-Annual All-Leader Girls Basketball Team by Marty Seeger and Greg Marsten FREDERIC – Another season in the books and likely one of the most competitive girls basketball seasons in recent memory. No team was safe entering conference play and despite most teams falling early in the playoffs this season, the majority of the same teams will be back and better than ever next year. Luck and Siren were very deserving of a share of the conference trophy this season, but the records of St. Croix Falls and Frederic should be no indication that they fell to the wayside. The Saints were

the only team in the Lakeland to boast the regional championship trophy, and had the Frederic girls been able to bounce the Bears in the regional semifinal, they may have created some major noise in the regional championship and beyond. As for Webster, Grantsburg and Unity, next year will be a major step in the right direction, as they’ll have everyone back and ready for more. Most teams have some very promising freshmen that will almost certainly grace the All-Leader selections next year. Congratulations on another great season.

Carley Emery Siren

Name: Morgan Denny School: Luck Comments: The junior has improved dramatically over the past couple of years and proved she could compete with just about anyone in the paint. Denny led the team with an average of 12 points per game and led with 234 rebounds, with most coming on defense. She was an unselfish player who also had 51 assists.

Chrissy Chenal Frederic

Name: Chrissy Chenal School: Frederic Comments: The Vikings forward ended her senior season on a high note, leading the team with an average of over 11 points per game, and was a master on the defensive side, clutching 36 steals and 29 blocks. She led her team with 172 rebounds and was a consistant leader that showed up with a competitive edge each game.

Name: Ashley Guevara School: Siren Comments: Siren's Ashley Guevara is talented on both ends of the court, and a consistent scorer who makes tough points. Guevara is the type of player who works hard for every point, and makes her teammates work hard, as well. She is involved in every play, and is solid on defense to match her double-digit scoring average.

Siren: Meghan Baasch, Jamie Fischbach, Abigail Mitchell

Grantsburg: Haley Larson, Gabrielle Witzany, Liz Gaffney

Unity: Marisa Hacker, Brittany Thomfohrda, Brittany Petznick

Luck: Aleah Lemieux, Bailee Swenson, Ashlyn Petersen

Webster: Mary Johnson, Kendra Spurgeon, Shauna Rein

St. Croix Falls: Caitlyn Olson, Sydney Geisness, Racheal Hansen

Taryn Pilz Luck

Name: Taryn Pilz School: Luck Comments: Pilz is one of the great scrappers inside. She's not afraid to get into the mix on both ends, pull down doubledigit boards and take shots from anywhere inside the 3-point line. She's one of the players others fear and respect, and her play improved as much as anyone in the region over the last few years. Marissa Campeau

Name: Marissa Campeau School: St. Croix Falls Comments: The senior ended a memorable season by hitting her 1,000th point, and helped lead the Saints to their first regional title in over a decade. Campeau was a constant threat under the basket but didn’t hesitate to step from beyond the arc to drop one of several 3-point buckets.

Name: Sarah Petznick School: St. Croix Falls Comments: She was a key component throughout the season and a big reason for the Saints regional championship. Petznick continues to improve on her game and has another two years to prove herself as one of the premier point guards in the West Lakeland Conference. She’s just a sophomore, on a very young, talented team.

Name: Sarah Howe School: Siren Comments: Howe was a constant presence on the court for the Dragons and the offensive game plan wasn’t complete without her. On defense, she made it difficult for teams to score and forced many athletes into coughing up the ball on several occasions with her intensity and relentless pressure.

St. Croix Falls

SPTeam ORandTSCoach of the Year All-Leader Second

Morgan Denny Luck

Name: Marty Messar School: Luck Comments: He's a coach who doesn't scream, yell or make a scene. He quietly turns a small group of girls into a sound, consistent and threatening basketball team, concentrating on the fundamentals, year after year. Few coaches get as much respect on and off the court as Messar, and none deserve it more.

Ashley Guevara Siren

Name: Avery Steen School: Luck Comments: A freshman with a senior's confidence. Steen may be one of the most exciting players to come out of the West Lakeland in a generation. She is a master on the fast break and deadly from anywhere on the court. Her passing improved dramatically through the season, making her a complete threat.

Sarah Petznick St. Croix Falls

Name: Crystal Donahue School: Unity Comments: Donahue is a natural athlete with the ability to play every position on the court. She led a scrappy Eagles team with 10 points per game and will be back again to lead as a senior next season. Donahue also led the team with 130 rebounds, and was third in assists with 44.

Marty Messar Luck

Sam Nelson Frederic

Name: Sam Nelson School: Frederic Comments: Nelson is about as unselfish as any player in the conference. She is an excellent passer and ball handler with a great eye for the court, and in spite of being a small package, she plays big. She is also a solid defensive player who is not afraid to match up with anyone or dive after any loose ball.

Avery Steen Luck

Name: Michelle Gibbs School: Webster Comments: Gibbs has an amazing gift for seeing the whole court. She is a master at intercepting passes, and promises to be among the top Lakeland scorers next year. Her offensive role on the Tigers is huge. She can do it all, and has as complete a game as any player in her conference.

Honorable Mentions Frederic: Corissa Schmidt, Sage Karl, Haley Kurkowski

First Team All-Leader selections Name: Carley Emery School: Siren Comments: Carley Emery is the most dominant basketball player in the West Lakeland and certainly deserves the honor of gracing the Division 4, WBCA All-State team this season. She was the third-best scorer in the state in any division, averaging nearly 23 points, four steals and four assists per game, and will be back next year.

Limit on liquor licenses to be repealed

Crystal Donahue Unity

Name: Kortney Morrin School: Grantsburg Comments: She can play any position, post up with anyone and is a solid scorer. When the Pirates were down, Morrin was always there as a steady presence and threat to bring them back. She not only led her team in scoring but is among the most versatile, physical players in the conference.

Kendra Wells Frederic

Name: Kendra Wells School: Frederic Comments: A senior with a great feel for the basket, wherever it was. She had moments this season where she kept her squad alive in tough situations, with steady inside work, solid play and an ability to score when nobody else could. Injuries may have hampered her, but she was a treat to watch when healthy.

Name: Jade Johnson School: Frederic Comments: She was a consistent scorer for the Vikings all season long, and wasn’t afraid to take the ball to the hoop, averaging 11 points per game, and helping her teammates to points as well with a season total of 49 assists, which was second on the team. She was also a scrapper on defense, leading the team with 82 steals.

Obey checks off two career goals Calls efforts by attorneys general to challenge health bill a “political stunt” by Gary King WASHINGTON, D.C. - While waiting to head back to the floor of Congress to approve final changes to the historic and sweeping health-care overhaul legislation, Dave Obey found some time to revisit some of the countless letters he’s received from constituents in Burnett, Polk and other counties in the 7th District. “When you read these letters, you’re reminded of why this is so important,” Obey said in a phone interDave Obey view last Thursday. “More than 900 people in our Congressional district went bankrupt due to medical costs, and half of all home foreclosures were tied to medical bills.” Obey presided over the House during the closing debate, March 21, which capped a bitter bipartisan battle over what has been labeled the most far-reaching social legislation in nearly half
