C I R E D E FR Vikings look to be top contenders again this year

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer FREDERIC – Frederic’s Ken Belanger is in his 46th year of coaching football and is in his 11th season as a Frederic Viking. He’s no doubt seen just about every type of team imaginable, but says this year’s Vikings team isn’t a real vocal team. Perhaps they’re saving their energy for the regular season, but Belanger says his kids are still enKen Belanger thusiastic. With a scrimmage already in the books, Belanger said he wasn’t exactly pleased with how things went. He said they have a FREDERIC VIKINGS FOOTBALL ROSTER

solid run-defense, were a bit wobbly on their pass defense and didn’t execute well offensively. “We’ve definitely made some adjustments,” Belanger said, noting that a few didn’t play, and only two players at the scrimmage were at the same positions they played last season. At least five positions on offense, and six on defense, had changed back to their old positions prior to their first game of the season against Northwood/Solon Springs. “We now know exactly what direction we’re going in,” Belanger said. The Vikings have some size on their line this year with Chris Hopp, Bryce Williamson, Dayton Rivera and Ryan

Wylie, and Blaine Clemons at center. Along with size, the Vikings have a little speed despite losing Tony Peterson and Ben Ackerley to graduation. Peterson rushed for 1,545 yards last season, and Ackerley passed for over 900 yards and was the team's second leading rusher. Waylon Buck is stepping in at quarterback, this season, but was the Vikes leading receiver last year, leaving a bit of a void at the receiver core. None of them have caught a varsity ball yet, but that will soon change as Buck is a good passer and quick out of the pocket. “Buck is quick at quarterback and he’s looking good. He’s done a nice

job,” Belanger said. Along with a good line, and even despite the loss of two offensive powers, Belanger still expects to have a solid running game and run-defense. Along with Buck, Adam Chenal at fullback, and even a 5’ 10” freshman named Peter Chenal, it could be a lot of fun to watch this Vikings team progress. “I think we’ve got some really good players,” Belanger said. G R U B S T N A R G Pirates hope to ride the O-line to success this season

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer GRANTSBURG – If the Pirates offensive line stays healthy, you could see big things from their running game this fall. It will be interesting to see who replaces 1,000-yard rusher Derek Bertlesen, and the speedy Kyle Johnson, who were a big part of the Pirates offense before graduation took them away. The Pirates football team will hope to combine a stellar offensive line with a quality backfield this season. Once those two elements mesh, Grantsburg could be a very dangerous team. we’ll open some things up front,” said coach Keith Lehne, who is in his 14th season with the Pirates. The core of the Pirates O-line, with an average weight of 227 pounds, includes seniors Damien Rasmussen, Seth Coy, David Ohnstad and Andy Jones and junior Colton Tretszven. For the past 10 years, the responsibility of the Pirates line has fallen on coach Josh Watt, who has molded these particular linemen from the ground up. “I think he’s done a tremendous job with those guys,” Lehne said. Along with quarterback Daniel Larsen, who filled in nicely last season when Brent Myers went down with injury, the Pirates will be going with a

different look on defense under second-year defensive coordinator, Adam Hale. The team actually gained a safety on defense this season with senior Thomas Labatt, who is 6’ 3’’, 200 pounds, and played as a freshman. But it looks as though this team is being built on its offense. “I think with this big offensive line that we do have, there’ll be some opportunities to run some different things,” Lehne said, and he hopes his team can build on last year's first round playoff win. “I think last year was a big turnaround for us, and it was good to get back into the playoffs and kind of reset that tone of expectation. Hopefully we

can play well in our conference and go from there,” said Lehne. Although it's tough for any coach to speculate who’s going to come out on top in the end, Lehne said Cameron is a real contender for the conference title. But don’t count out the Pirates. “I’m hopeful that we stay healthy and our kids play well, and I hope we’re right in that mix when we come down to the end,” said Lehne.

CA RD IN AL S

K C U L Luck Cardinals have depth and speed this season

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer LUCK – The Luck Cardinals earned a playoff berth last season after moving from the Large Lakeland and into the Small Lakeland. It was a classic year of football last season as the Cardinals renewed their rivalry with Don Kendzior Frederic, and the two teams met for the first time in 17 years. That contest ended in a 20-17 win for the Vikings, despite a 17-0 halftime lead for Luck. The two teams won’t be seeing each other this fall until the second-to-last game of the season, in early October, and it could turn out to be a conference title game. There’s a lot of competition in the Small Lakeland this year and many coaches are looking at Frederic, Northwood-Solon Springs and Shell Lake to be top contenders. But that’s not to say Luck won’t be right in the mix. Coach Don Kendzior, in his ninth season as a

head coach for the Cards, has nine winning seasons, and four conference championships to boot, including eight playoff appearances. Overall, Kendzior says this year’s team has size and depth, as well as overall team speed and work ethic, which is a good start for any high school football team. There are at least 10 returning players who saw considerable action last season including Evan Armour, Ben Kufalk, Cole Engstrand, Hunter Wilson, Brodie Kunze Karsten Petersen Joe Christenson, Jacob LaDuke, John Denny and Kyle Hunter. Just three of those players are seniors on a roster with a dozen juniors and about the same number of sophomores and freshmen. Kendzior said the Cardinals will look to finish in the top half of the conference, and it also appears early on that Luck High School is going to continue a strong tradition of football.

there won’t be a lot of new schemes for the Saints, he does see some of the players moving into new positions, which could surprise some of the their past opponents. As for the returning Saints, Sempf has several three-year starters, including Erik Segelstrom, Erik Swenson and Jake Rademacher. “Obviously, we’ll look to them to lead the team,” he said, also noting Ben Clausen in the secondary, and improved play at the line. “I really look to a bunch of guys contributing this season,” he said. “We’re going to be really diversified on offense.” Last season, the Saints had three backs with around or over 700-yards rushing, which Sempf said would be a likely scenario again for 2011. “We’ve got a lot of guys who can carry the ball. Just a lot of skilled guys, and all willing to work.” The Saints start the season with plenty of hard opponents, including Osceola, Ladysmith and Cameron, although Sempf thinks the Lakeland will be strong across the board, and he expects some solid, close competition all season long. “I don’t think there’s one dominant group this year,” he said. “I really think everyone should be able to compete. Unity’s got a lot of guys back and good athletes. Webster, also. I think it’s hard to pick. I don’t know, I wouldn’t be surprised if any of the teams win conference.” Sempf has high praise for his coaching staff this season, with Grant Belisle, Paul Gilbert, Rob Bullard, and a new coach in Chris Wallace, as well as lots of helpers and volunteers along the way. “We’re looking forward to having a great year. Working with parents, fans and having a good season for St. Croix Falls,” he said. “It’s a good group of guys. They’ve really raised the bar for expectations.”

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer SIREN – The Dragons are eyeing an opportunity to join other small schools during the 2012 season in eight-man football, but will be taking 11 athletes to the gridiron in 2011. While the team is short a bit on numbers due to Bill Hoefler a few nagging injuries, the Dragons should surprise a few this season with some talented athletes. team does possess a few threats. When asked what he’s most excited for this season, Hoefler said, “The versatility of my players to play multiple positions, and we have some good speed at important positions.” Leading receiver

Andrew Brown will be a deep threat this season for the Dragons and was an All-Conference selection last year, and behind the arm of Elijah Hinze, the Dragons will almost certainly have a few tricks up their sleeves to get the ball into the end zone. Other key returning players from last season include Evan Oachs, Isaac Wegner, Murdock Smith, Will Haines and Shay Johnson. Hoefler said the eight senior players will be the biggest strengths of the team this season, but at least five

other starters are underclassmen, who have limited varsity experience. There’s a lot to build on from last season’s team, who finished 3-6, and Hoefler thinks the conference is relatively balanced this year. “We, as a team, hope to improve on last year's record and be more competitive in all games we play,” Hoefler said.

football coaching involvement, he is confident this is a team to be proud of and rally behind. “We have great team chemistry this year,” he said, noting that while they have plenty of new players to fill the shoes of some talented graduation losses, they all have worked very hard to make the school, team and fans proud. Anderson was a familiar face this summer at various village boards. He's promoting a plan to bring the Unity Eagle homecoming celebration back into Milltown, Centuria and Balsam Lake with parades, events and a swelling of pride in a celebrated athletic program, hoping to spread that red, white and blue Eagle spirit across the district. And you can expect the gridiron on Richard O. Klatt Field to be where that Eagle pride will shine. “Our offense, defense and special teams are all new this year,” Anderson said, without giving too much away. He knows they have numerous hurdles to overcome in the Large Lakeland Conference, which is loaded with talented squads. “St. Croix Falls and Grantsburg are always big games for us,” he said. Anderson is confident in the dedication to their cause of his players, especially the veterans. “All of our seniors will play a big part for our team this year,” he said. “Most have had one or two years of starting experience.” He thinks that aforementioned conditioning will only add to their confidence come game time. “The amount of time that our players put into the weight room over the summer is a big strength,” Anderson said. “Teams should not overlook Unity in the Large Lakeland this year.” Although they might have a hard time looking over them.

Senior leadership will be key for a successful Tiger season

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer WEBSTER – The Webster Tigers fell short of the playoffs last year and won just three games, but their final game of the season against Unity showed how the team came together at the right time, and held on in a close 31-23 victory. “Our kids played their best game of the season, and it was a wonderful way to to end the 2010 season,” said coach Jeromie Voeltz Jeromie Voeltz after the win. He later added that it was a big win for his senior squad, who has since graduated, but nine new seniors will look to lead the team to victory this fall, and their leadership on the field at the start of the season could set a winning tone throughout the year. “We are excited about the possibilities of our football team,” Voeltz said. Seniors Randy Rankin, Taylor Heinz Aaron Clay, Austin Bork, Brad Krause, Josh Baer, Ben Leef, Anthony Dietmeier and Garrett Eichman will be the forces keeping the Tigers together this season, as the roster boasts just three juniors, 17 sophomores and a dozen

freshmen. While it could be a lean year for the Tigers, don’t expect them to be an easy out. Voeltz said there will be a some new faces in different positions, but the teams success will ultimately rest on the shoulders of the entire team. On the team's biggest strength this season, Voeltz said, “Our willingness to work hard and together.” The Tigers opened up their regular season with a home game against Washburn on Friday, Aug. 19, and the game story and photos of that game can be found in the Wednesday, Aug. 24, edition of the Inter-County Leader.

Strong Pirate boys team eyeing another trip to state

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer GRANTSBURG – There’s a significant number of bright spots on the Grantsburg cross-country team this season, not only for the boys, but also for the girls. Coach Paul Huskamp, who is in his eighth year of coaching, even seemed a bit surprised to see that he has twice the number of athletes to work with this season, as opposed to last. He’s even still trying to recruit a few players, but for now, he’s already got 15 boys and nine girls. That means, he’ll have a full team for both. The boys, in particular, have the highest expectations. “I am really looking forward to it. Last year, we weren’t expected to Paul Huskamp be at state at all and we took eighth. This year, we plan to improve greatly on that,” Huskamp said. The boys lost one member of last year's state qualifying team to graduation, but the rest are back, including seniors Kyle

Sophomore Jacob Ohnstad will likely round out the top five in this year’s boys team, but Huskamp said several other newcomers are eyeing the sixth and seventh spots that are allowed to go to state and compete. Many of the starting core logged several miles over the summer as well. “Everybody will be pushing everybody. We have good cohesion,” Huskamp said, adding that a

big part of the Pirate boys success will lie in their ability to run as a pack. For the girls, only two of the nine have running experience, including senior Kaelah Maslow and sophomore Jaden Cook, but they could be competing at an experienced level by the end of the season.

Returning seniors Alex Frey and Rashaud Kelash will be the driving force for the boys, and just missed state last year. “Both earned All-Conference honors last season and should easily do so again this year ... we are going to work hard to make sure they both make it [to state] this year.” For the ladies, All-Conference junior Allie Holmdahl returns, as well as Autumn Erickson, who just missed out on All-Conference honors. “They all emanate a sense of sportsmanship and a competitive edge that makes coaching them a pleasure.” One downside is that Clemins has six male seniors. “I’ll have to recruit a great deal for next year to make up for this loss. But I’m excited to be working with such an amazing and dedicated group of student athletes. It should be an unforgettable season!”

by Greg Marsten Leader staff writer ST. CROIX FALLS – Saints cross-country head coach Jennifer Clemins is back. “I am happy to return as the head coach again this year after being on maternity.” While some schools have struggled to fill a roster, it’s just the opposite for Clemins. “We have one of our biggest teams this year, with many new faces: Erica Bergmann, Taylor Orton, Jordan Johnson and Joleen Gravelle. It will be a pleasure to watch them develop as the season progresses.” Clemins thinks her boys team will make an impact. “I think we have a solid chance to become the Lakeland champs, and adJennifer Clemins vance a few individuals - Alex Frey, Rashaud Kelash, and Henry Klein - on to the state championships.” Clemins often calls the team a family, and plans to build on that approach with assistant coach Tammi Braund and volunteer coach Ryan Stridde. “We plan to incorporate strength training circuit workouts, more training games - to help keep the art of running fun.”

by Greg Marsten Leader staff writer BALSAM LAKE – There are some new faces on the Unity/Luck cross-country squad this year, as the cooperative program has moved to new heights under fourth-year head coach Lori Anderson. They have a solid contingency of senior boys, while their girls are generally younger this season. But they also have plenty to look forward to in a sport that is known for having strong runners at younger grade levels. “The start of a new year is something I

regularly look forward to," Anderson said. “Things are fresh and everyone starts over with a clean slate.” That clean slate also means the possibility of some surprises this season, and Anderson said Lori Anderson the team worked hard in the off-season, although most distance runners

know there is no “off season.” “I appreciate the growth the athletes exhibit from the previous season,” she said. “Of course, I also eagerly look forward to what the seniors will choose to do in their final year of this program.” Unity’s exceptional swimming pool is back up and running more efficiently than ever this season, and Anderson has been stressing it as a wonderful training tool that few teams have as an option. “It will be exciting to spend some workout sessions in the pool,” she said, noting that she was very involved in var-

k c u L / y t i Un

ious clinics and training regimens to help develop her runners the best ways possible. “Additionally, I again attended the WCCCA Convention in Milwaukee last January, so plan to implement some of the valuable ideas obtained from the clinic during the season,” she said. Anderson is not one to rule any opponent out, and thinks this season will be proof positive of that. “Every opponent is key,” she said. “I believe all athletes are in the sport to give it their best effort and compete to their highest ability so we go into each meet expecting peak performances from all schools.”

Emma Kelby and Kally Schiller should help lead the team and had great seasons last year, but a foreign exchange Jim Muus student from Norway, Roselinn Takvam, could fill that third spot along with junior Molly Brown. There’s also Melissa Gustavson, who has never run in cross country before, but is a talented sprinter in track. Senior Olivia Kopecky and a

handful of other girls will also add a lot of depth to a promising girls team. “The nice thing is that they’re all working hard and doing what they can,” said Tigers coach Jim Muus, who sees a shift in the number of girls, to the number of boys competing, but the boys should still be solid with senior Joey Erickson leading the way. Erickson was never far behind Taylor last season and has made great strides to get even better over the summer. “He has gone to camps and is excited to get going,” Muus said. Senior Cody Isaacson and junior Matt Smith have also had success with the Tigers but for many, it’s all new. “I would say that they’ll probably be OK, but right now it's kind of a learning situation. New head coach Maria Gjovig is excited about the opportunity, but also about the fresh group of players, who now have a home in the Heart of the North Conference. “We’re all new!” Gjovig exclaimed with a smile. “I am very excited to watch them improve with each match and to help build that passion for the game.” The Saints have a fresh crop of young talent this year, all of them freshmen except for junior Caitlyn Olson, who moves from the volleyball court to the links. “We’re excited to have her,” Gjovig said. “Each girl has already improved their game by 10 strokes or more. I look for this to continue as the season goes on.” Being in the Heart of the North Conference means some lengthy road trips. “From what I understand, Hayward is the team to beat, along with Superior.
