Foreclosures down slightly statewide

Making a colorful splash

Extension resource shows Washburn County filings

WASHBURN COUNTY — Housing foreclosures remained high but declined slightly across the state in the first quarter of 2011 according to data compiled by the University of Wisconsin-Extension Center for Community and Economic Development and the UWWhitewater. Overall, there was a slight decline of 3.4 percent in foreclosures statewide from the fourth quarter of 2010 and a decline of 14.4 percent from the first quarter of 2010. Total foreclosures fell from 7,620 in the first quarter of 2010 to 6,519 in the first quarter of 2011. At the time of publication, data from Portage County was not yet included in the state totals. Milwaukee County continued to account for the greatest percentage, 22 percent, of foreclosures in the state for the first quarter of 2011. Calculations are based on nonduplicated foreclosure cases filed in civil court for each Wisconsin county. From the fourth quarter of 2010 to the first quarter of 2011, the number of housing foreclosures in Washburn County rose from 23 to 27. However, the first quarter of 2011 foreclosure number was down eight from the first quarter

No wireless Internet access

by Jessica Beecroft SHELL LAKE – The Information Technology Committee of Washburn County voted Monday, May 16, to not put wireless Internet access in the senior center or the courthouse. The router was offered as a gift for the county; however, the cost of installation and setup would run approximately $400 according to Tom Miller, IT director. “I’m not hip with this,” said Tom Mackie, IT chairperson, after hearing the possibility of security issues becoming a problem. Miller explained that if wireless Internet access is offered, “the county would be held responsible and have to pay fines if illegal downloads were being made (with the county’s wireless access).” The committee received only a limited amount of interest shown for the wireless access to the courthouse and only a limited amount of usage would be planned for the Shell Lake Senior Center. The IT committee has voted against setting up the wire-

less access at this time. It was noted that if there was more interest in the access shown, the IT committee may act at that time. The initial request came from the aging committee. All other senior centers in the county pay for their own Internet access. The senior center, however, is connected

with the county. The committee asked Miller what the court’s take was on the issue. Miller answered, “They’ve had people that ask for it. The judge has no problem with it. They do have a lot of downtime when you are sitting in the courts waiting for things to go on. And rather than taking a recess to go get a fax, they can just get an e-mail right there in the courts. There is a lot of timesaving and efficiency things like it. The judge would be the one to say ‘no.’ He doesn’t want it upstairs. We could charge for it - $25-30 a year - and they wouldn’t have a problem with that.” “I’d like to see a proposal coming out of the court,” said Mackie. “If they really want it, they can come back and ask for it,” said William Allard. So, all interested parties are asked to submit their requests to the information technology committee of Washburn County.
