MADISON - Poverty is increasing among Wisconsin counties, and today nearly 36 percent of households with children under 18 live in poverty, according to a story released this week by University of Wisconsin-Extension. Recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey shows that poverty increased by more than 10 percent since 2000 in the majority of Wisconsin counties. Washburn County ranks 17th highest among Wisconsin’s 72 counties in percentage of residents living in poverty at 13, but is still lower than the surrounding counties of Burnett, at 17 percent, Sawyer at 19.6 percent (second highest in state), Rusk at 16.1 percent and is comparable with Douglas, Bayfield and Barron counties. Burnett County reported the largest growth in poverty since 2000 among all counties in the state, going up 8 percentage points from 2000. In 2000, only two counties reported poverty rates higher than 15 percent. During the 2005-2009 period, 10 counties reported rates above 15 percent. Poverty was highest in Menominee (29 percent) and Sawyer (20 percent) counties, followed by Forest, Milwaukee, Ashland, Burnett, Florence, Rusk, Vernon and Dunn counties. La Crosse and Eau Claire counties also reported high poverty, with approximately 15 percent of the population living below the official poverty line. The state average poverty rate was 11 percent. Toys for Tots

by Regan Kohler BARRONETT – The annual Toys for Tots Christmas event was held Sunday, Dec. 19, in the Barronett Community Center, with a lower number of families participating this year. Every year, the U.S. Marine Corpssponsored gift giveaway is held in Barronett and Rice Lake the week before Christmas. Over the year, Toys for Tots collects toys and monetary donations from individuals, businesses, organizations and large corporations, and families in need can come to the giveaways in the two towns. Each family can choose one large toy, two medium-sized toys and three small toys per child. Larry Miller, one of the organizers, said, “We got more toys this year.” There were two new corporations that (L to R:) Toys for Tots organizers Butch Holmes and Larry Miller, and U.S. donated toys and money to Toys for Tots: Marine Corps Sgt. largest increase was Florence County, in the northeastern part of the state, where poverty has grown from 9 to 16 percent since 2000. “An increasing proportion of Wisconsin residents are facing economic hardship,” says Katherine Curtis, demographic specialist with the UW-Extension and assistant professor in the Dept. of Community and Environmental Sociology at UW-Madison. “This has significant impacts, both immediate and long term, for individuals, their communities and the state. These numbers suggest that economic development, including living wages, health benefits, food security and housing affordability should be front and center in policy discussions.” Poverty declined modestly in some counties, Curtis said. The greatest decrease was reported by Bayfield County, where poverty fell from 13 to about 11 percent In 2005-09, poverty was lowest in Waukesha and Ozaukee counties at 4 percent, followed by Washington County at approximately 5 percent and Calumet County at 6 percent. These counties also reported the lowest poverty rates in 2000. Households

Hoop houses still available through EQIP

SPOONER — Last year, financial assistance was made available through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program for the first time. Once again hoop houses, a seasonal high-tunnel system for crops, will be available through the EQIP program. The purpose of the practice is to extend the growing season for fresh market vegetable producers, improve plant quality, improve soil quality and improve water quality from reduced nutrient and pesticide transport. Some of the criteria for hoop houses include that they are limited to 2,178 square feet in area, crops shall be planted directly into the soil underlying the high-tunnel system, and plants shall not be grown in pots or on racks. The tunnel frame must also be constructed of metal, wood or durable plastic and be at least 6 feet high. The sign-up for the EQIP program runs through Jan. 14. For more information regarding the EQIP sign-up and hoop houses see www.wi.nrcs.usda.gov or contact the NRCS office at 715-635-8228, Ext. 3. — from NRCS According to the same data, approximately 7.2 percent of family households in Wisconsin reported living in poverty in 2005-09. Among family households, nearly 36 percent of those with children under 18 years old were living below the poverty line. Recent research about Wisconsin shows that limited earnings potential, including the inability to find work or work that pays a living wage, is most strongly linked with economic vulnerability for family households. Singlemother households are constrained by one income and face the additional challenge of balancing the demands of employment and child rearing. Low education is a marker of a less competitive labor force. Research has also shown a higher prevalence of poverty among racial minorities. This pattern persists in 2005-09. Poverty was highest for African Americans, with nearly 35 percent living in poverty, followed by American Indians (about 27 percent) and Hispanics (23 percent). Approximately 13 percent of the state’s Asian residents were living in poverty. In contrast, 8.5 percent of nonHispanic whites were in poverty during the period. - Gary King with information from UW-Extension

Thursday, Dec. 16. Dennis DeWayne Bollman was driving alone in his 2005 Chevy Silverado truck. According to a Washburn County sheriff’s report, Bollman was traveling southbound on Hwy. 53 and his vehicle went off the roadway near Stub Road, traveled approximately 150 yards into trees and came to a stop against large trees. The report noted a medical condition

likely caused the accident. The report also noted Bollman’s truck did not have deployed airbags and that he was not wearing a seat belt, but was not ejected from the vehicle. Bollman was deceased upon arrival of emergency responders. The accident was called in by Gary Grubbs who contacted the sheriff’s department at 7:43 a.m. after seeing the truck off the road. - Jessica Beecroft

The Caroling Cops included Deb Nebel, law enforcement assistant; Deb Glessing, jailor/dispatcher; Gretchen Nielson, jailor/dispatcher; Jason Mayer, jailor/dispatcher; Gwen Bartholomew, who works at Indianhead Medical Center but was filling in for her husband Jason who is a jailor/dispatcher; Dawn Richter, secretary for the Spooner Police Department and Mike Richter, chief deputy. On the guitar is organizer Jamie Voelker. — Photo submitted WASHBURN COUNTY — Even though they were primarily Washburn County deputies, they called themselves the Caroling Cops, and this was the first year they ventured out with bookings at Lakeland Manor, Glenview, the Spooner Nursing Home and both Care Partners. Organizer Jamie Voelker, who once worked at a nursing home and knew what this kind of entertainment meant to the residents, began looking for volunteers a few weeks ago saying, “It’s about the only time when people come to sing at the homes. Sometimes there are several groups that come during a short period of time at Christmas, but even if it is only once a year, the residents always love the company and enjoy the singing.” The group sang seven songs at each stop, and they took time to talk to their

audience about activities in the songs. For instance, when they sang “Jingle Bells” they asked if anyone had ever ridden in a one-horse open sleigh, and many residents would respond and share their personal experiences. The group hit their first stop at 4:30 p.m. last Friday night and sang and visited and drove some more until 7:30 p.m. sharing Christmas cheer with everyone. Because the deputies did not go in uniform, they could hear several people at each place ask the person next to them who those people were. But Volker played her guitar and the rest sang and the evening was a success for both the performers and their audience. Plans are already under way to go again next year.

Letters to the editor Well, here we go. When Wisconsin voters foolishly elected at least three Tea Bag Party candidates this fall, many voters thought they were doing so because these candidates had principles. Well, we are already seeing where their principles are getting us. First, Gov.-elec. Walker, adhering to his principles, cancels a proposed commuter rail deal that would have cost Wisconsin little or nothing but does cost Wisconsin 5,500 good jobs.

Shame on you U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson for failing to recuse yourself before ruling the health-care act is unconstitutional. It’s time we expose the players from this Virginia courtroom. Then we hear that Sen.-elect Johnson didn’t even wait to be sworn in before he showed us his true principles by appointing a longtime right-wing Washington lobbyist as his chief of staff. That will certainly shake up Washington. MADISON – Livestock producers who incurred eligible livestock death losses due to recent winter storms may be eligible for the USDA Farm Service Agency’s Livestock Indemnity Program. “Producers who suffered livestock losses due to recent winter storms will be required to provide documentation of the livestock lost,” said Brad Pfaff, state executive director. “FSA staff can provide producers with a list of acceptable loss documentation that includes proof of death, producer records and verifiable inventory documentation.” For livestock losses that occurred in

calendar year 2010, producers will have 30 days after the death to file a notice of loss at FSA and will have until Jan. 30 to apply for payment. Adequate documentation must prove the death of eligible livestock occurred as a direct result of an eligible adverse weather event in the calendar year for which benefits are being requested. If adequate verifiable proof of death records documentation is not available, a livestock producer may provide reliable records, along with verifiable beginning and ending inventory, as proof of death. Certifications of livestock deaths by

third parties, who are not affiliated with the farming operation, may be accepted only if verifiable proof of death records or reliable proof of death records along with verifiable beginning and ending inventory records are not available. LIP indemnity payments will be based on 75 percent of the fair market value of the livestock as determined by FSA. Producers need to contact their local FSA county offices to sign up for LIP. Producers can also learn more about LIP by visiting www.fsa.usda.gov. — from USDA

Shell Lake Lions Club news

The Shell Lake Lions Club would like to wish all of you a merry Christmas and prosperous new year, hoping you find time to reflect on everything we have to be thankful for and also, ways of helping others. You can be sure your Shell Lake Lions Club will do their best to help. We’re proud to announce that, with your help, our major fundraiser, the calendar sale, was a success. For the first time we have no more calendars for distribution, although some members may possibly have a few unsold ones in their possession. If any members have any, and think they may not be able to sell them, please contact Jim Meyers who, along with others, have done such a great job on this project and we’ll see if we can find a home for them.

WASHBURN COUNTY — A recent study published by the Office of Drug Control Policy unveiled some new disturbing trends affecting traffic safety. While the study comes out of Washington, it should also be taken very seriously by residents of rural Wisconsin. According to one of the first-ever analyses of drug involvement in traffic fatalities, of all traffic accidents resulting in death in 2009, after which drug tests were performed, drugs were found in the system of 33 percent of the drivers. In fact, while overall traffic fatalities went down in the past five years, those involving drugs went up 5 percent. It should also be noted that in addition to illegal drugs, this study also tested for

Many thousands of dollars were raised in Washburn County to provide food and gifts for those in need. Gratitude is extended to all the businesses and individuals who donated time, money or in many cases, both, to ensure worthy families in our extended community will experience some Christmas joy. Sherry Timmermann, executive director of New Paradigm Partners, said that in her work with the Rural CODE Coalition, the topic of drugged driving keeps coming up more and more often, and from all different levels of law enforcement. “The topic has percolated from across the board, and they all report seeing more and more incidences of drugged driving,” she said. Brett Heino with the state highway patrol’s Spooner office affirms that the highway patrol has indeed seen an increase in drugged driving arrests and believes drugged driving will continue to be a huge problem for the local area. While Heino believes Washburn County to be statistically similar to the rest of the country when it comes to drug use and driving, he says that higher incidences of meth is a big problem in north-

ern Wisconsin. Stemming from these law enforcement concerns, NPP is currently seeking a grant, which would help fund training for drug-recognition experts. According to Heino, someone driving under the influence of drugs behaves differently when pulled over than someone stopped for drunk driving. While neither has, “the mental-physical correlated functions it takes to safely operate a vehicle,” Heino said, “someone under the influence of, for example marijuana, does not slur their words as badly as someone who is drunk.” It is NPPs intent to get a greater number of officers trained to recognize drugged driving on active duty. Timmermann is careful to point out that enhanced enforcement will and should be accompanied by community education programs, teaching community members not only about illegal drug use and driving but also about how their

Once again, we extend gratitude to Hugh and Sue Smith for their kind donation of the commemorative rifle, which recently went to the highest bidder, which increased our activities account by $2,000. What a generous gift by the Smiths in this, the giving season. Recently the Lions also contributed $1,000 toward the purchase of crosscountry skis and boots for use by students in the Shell Lake School District. This donation, along with a generous contribution from the ski club and the school district, will allow students to learn what we hope will be a lifelong, healthy outdoor activity. Our gratitude to Dave Swan for making the trip to the Twin Cities in the snowstorm to make this happen.

own prescription drugs might affect their ability to drive. While drugged driving is a serious problem in the area, as in the rest of the country, Timmermann believes that grassroots coalitions like the NPP Rural CODE Coalition responding to the expressed needs of their communities can have a great impact and help turn negative trends around. Marlene Hansen expects daughter Krista and son Jaydon from Minot, N.D., to fly in on Wednesday. Sad to report Jeanne Hovde, 78, lost her battle with cancer. The funeral was at Holy Trinity in Haugen on Wednesday. She and her late husband, Ted, operated a dairy farm by Long Lake. Jeanne was a very intelligent lady, graduated valedictorian of the Rice Lake class of 1950 and moved to Washington, D.C., to work at the Pentagon before marriage and moving back to the area. They had 12 children, two sets of twins and always said they were cheaper by the dozen. In the later years, she carved out time to write poetry and short stories as well as children’s books, having three published. The last one was published internationally. She was a dear friend of ours. The last time Carol Sauer and I got together with her was

Folks are anxious for families to arrive, the hustle, bustle getting ready, planning, baking, wrapping, shopping and writing, and keeping warm as it sure has been a cold December. Jon Krugar’s funeral was a big one, very nice and lots of food. His aunt, Lois Hoh, came from Fort Meyers, Fla., Elfreda West and I attended. It was so nice to see so many friends from my home area. Sam West’s girls were together last week at the Whitney home on Long Lake when Dan was at a show. Cara Whitney and children from Nebraska, Arin Swensen and children and Jody, Jake and Julie West and children and grandma Deb West from Spooner and great-grandmas Mary West with Gene and Avis Thompson got to spend some time with them.

The Bad Christmas

by Mary B. Olsen, Shell Lake Our third-grade class had hardly gotten settled into our seats in our classroom than our teacher, Mrs. Mahan, told us to get out a sheet of tablet paper. “She cleared her throat, smiled cheerfully, and said, “I want everyone to write a short essay about your Christmas experience. Begin now.” I was stunned. How could I put into words the true story of my recent Christmas? I had to plan it just right. I could start with how sick I had been for the whole week. Then I could list the presents I gave people and the presents people gave me. I saw all the kids around me writing what looked like Santa Claus letters, list of presents. I wanted to tell my own story in my own way. I began my essay. “It was the worst Christmas of my life.” Could I write about how I had been awakened by my sister in the middle of the night? I walked sleepily, in my footed pajamas, into the living room where the tree lights were on. It looked so beautiful, it took my breath away. My sister and brothers were scurrying around, squealing, and bubbling with excitement, showing each other their presents, the ones Santa Claus had left that had not been wrapped. Suddenly, I stumbled and fell. When someone turned on a light I discovered I had fallen over a present for me. It was a pretty little doll bed with a little mattress and pillow and quilt on it. I had flattened it, breaking off the headboard and the footboard. I felt sick already, as I had all

Worst Christmas?

For a different twist on the holiday season, some staff members of the Register felt it would be interesting to encourage readers to write about their worst Christmas. If what I am about to share is my worst Christmas you may realize how blessed my life has been. In the fall of 1972 my father suffered from food poisoning. This triggered several events in his life that would require a long hospital stay. My dad always knew he had a heart condition but at this point his kidneys were also failing him. The heart problem was first attributed to his having rheumatic Suzanne fever as a child. After being treated for food poisoning it was Johnson determined that Dad would have to have a Teflon patch put on a hole in his heart. Dad was in a Twin Cities hospital the month of November and most of December that year. He came home for Christmas and was scheduled to return to the hospital in early January 1973 to have open-heart surgery; that is if he survived the visit home. His doctor told him after he was recovering from surgery that basically he had been sent home to die and since he didn’t they went ahead with the sur-

week, and I began to cry. How could I have broken my little doll bed? It was ruined. “This is yours, it’s a new doll. I have one, too, and they both have a lot of clothes,” my sister told me. She put the doll in my arms and I tried to stop crying. I went back to bed, clutching my new doll and snuggled in, getting tears on my pillow. In the morning at daylight I awoke and I felt wonderful. My new doll lay beside me, a girl doll with real blond hair and a pretty face. What a wonderful day! My stomach didn’t hurt anymore. I hurried into the living room and joined the Christmas morning fun. It was a joyous day. Mother let me go outside with the others and we played in the snow and tried out the boys’ sleds on our hill. We drank warm cocoa and ate cookies. I wore my new Christmas dress. Later, we had a wonderful dinner and lots of company. We opened gaily wrapped presents. I had new mittens and a scarf and hat to match. I had a new scrapbook. My mother liked the gifts I gave her, the calendar we made in school and the special Christmas cookie I had written Mother on in red sugar. My dad liked the new screwdriver I had given him. He told me he would fix the doll bed so it would be as good as new. I found, under the edge of a chair in the living room, a present I had overlooked. It was a box of chocolates with my name on it. My sister and I cut out paper doll clothes. We sang carols around the piano. It was the most wonderful Christmas ever. It had started out to be terrible but I was well and that was the best Christmas present. It was good to be able to get outdoors gery. Dad was 35 years old. Christmas was different that year as Dad was literally a 98-pound weakling. He couldn’t be around many people for fear of getting sick. Rather than heading over the river and through the woods as a family to our grandparents’ house, two of my uncles came and picked up my siblings and me to celebrate Christmas Eve at Granny and Grandpa’s house. Even though the five of us weren’t orphans, we did feel a bit odd celebrating Christmas without our parents. After the evening meal, gifts were passed out. I didn’t receive a gift nor did I say anything to my grandparents. When it was time to leave, my siblings were thanking the gift givers and I didn’t say anything. Sister Konnie finally spoke up and said that I hadn’t received a gift. My grandpa felt bad and said there was something for me. A search around the Christmas tree began and a small package was found that had my name on it. I received a coin purse with a $5 bill inside. Although this was a different Christmas for me, it was also the beginning of a new life for my dad. Since that first heart surgery he has received a mechanical valve and has had his pacemaker replaced twice before receiving a pacemaker/defibrillator. Through all this, Dad basically has received a new heart. A new heart in the sense that he now celebrates Christmas with the meaning of what Christmas is…the birth of Jesus Christ his savior. Was Christmas 1972 my worst Christmas? Perhaps not.

again and enjoy the most wonderful Christmas of my life. “Everyone hand in your paper now,” Miss Foley said. But I wasn’t finished. Mrs. Mahan glanced at the paper and the sentence I had written. She looked at me with an expression quite like pity. I was so embarrassed, I hid my face and laid my head down over my arms. My teacher thought I had not had any presents at all. A needy child. Well, I thought it over and decided that was fine. There was no reason to explain. I held the past Christmas in my heart. Later on, I found I had been given a B+ on my paper. Pretty good for one sentence.

BARRON — Barron Electric employees, directors and the cooperative donated more than $19,000 to community, health and education not-for-profit organizations. “Since the program began in 1996, more than $74,000 has been donated. This program is an excellent example of how employees and directors concern for the community helps local organizations,” said Barron Electric’s general manager Dallas Sloan. Some of the organizations that have received donations included Barron Food Pantry, Prairie Farm – Ridgeland Food Pantry, Lakeview Medical Center – Hospice, Special Olympics – Barron County, Spooner Area Fire Department, Shell Lake Arts Center, Shell Lake Fire Department, Faith in Action – Washburn County, Barron County Humane Society, and Boys and Girls Club of Barron County. “We appreciate Barron Electric’s support of the Washburn County Food Pantry. Last month, 372 households used the food pantry. We provide approximately 12,000 meals per month,” said Sue Adams, director of the food pantry. — submitted

Dealing with heavy snow loads on agricultural buildings

MADISON — Due to the recent heavy snowfall, there is reason to have concern over heavy snow loads on farm buildings. There have been several reports of farm buildings going down in western Wisconsin. In addition, many have concerns for buildings that still have significant amounts of snow on them, especially if more snow falls before the current snow melts or slides off. “Snow and ice accumulations on roofs cause a loading which can cause roof collapse when the roof is not strong enough to resist the load,” said Brian Holmes, University of Wisconsin-Extension agricultural engineer. He added, “The more dense the snow and ice, the greater the load for a given depth. Wind blown-off and snow slide-off can reduce snow load on a roof. However, snow drifting into leeward or lower roofs and valleys and snow slide onto lower roofs can add significant

loads from accumulated snow.” In addition to estimating the roof loading, it’s important to know the loading the roof can resist. Wisconsin’s Uniform Dwelling Code requires most homes to have a minimum snow load rating of 30-40 pounds per square foot, with the greater requirement for northern Wisconsin. Agricultural structures are exempt from this requirement. Furthermore, structural failures can occur at snow loads less than the building was designed for if the structure was not designed, just built, if trusses/rafters/purlins/ with reduced quality materials or smaller dimensions than specified in design were used, if trusses/rafters/purlins were installed at a wider spacing than specified, if critical bracing was not installed or improperly installed, if moisture condensed on or leaked onto structural members causes decay/corrosion weakening of the structure, or if loads were added to the roof, which were not considered in the original design. Top chords of trusses, rafters, purlins and truss plates are particularly susceptible. Examples include ceiling, roof surface overlay, equipment installed on roof or hung from trusses. At snow loads greater than recommended or if the structure is showing stress from the snow, i.e. sagging, trusses out of alignment or bowed, creaking sounds etc., you may need to remove some snow. If you are unsure of the snow load on your roof, a ballpark estimate can be made using the formula: Calculated roof loading (lb./ft.2) equals depth (ft.) x density (lb./ft.2 /ft. depth). The approximate density (lb./ft.2

/ft. depth) for light snow is 5-20, packed snow 20-40, packed snow with ice 40-58 and ice 58. So for example, a roof with 3 feet of light snow has a estimated roof loading of 60 lb./ft.2 (3 ft. depth X 20 lb./ft.2/ft. depth density equals 60 lb./ft.2). If you need to remove snow from a roof, use caution. Falls from roofs or from ladders going to the roof can easily occur. Removing snow can allow the snow up slope to suddenly slide down, burying people or animals below. Using a roof rake from a safe distance away can reduce some of this risk to the person removing the snow. Some precautions to take when removing snow from a roof are in uninsulated sheds, use a portable heater to warm the interior enough to encourage snow to slide off the roof so you don’t have to manually remove it. Unvented heaters can cause oxygen depletion and carbon monoxide accumulation in an unventilated space. Plan to ventilate the warmed shed before re-entering. Use a snow roof rake if at all possible. This allows you to stand on the ground in a safe place. Check the local hardware store or building supply store. Removing snow from the edge of the roof could allow snow above the edge to avalanche. Make sure you are out of the fall zone when scraping snow from a smooth roof surface. Use fall protection equipment when workers are on the roof. Tie workers off so they don’t fall from the roof. If ladders are used, locate and secure them so they do not fall while workers are standing on them. Also, locate ladders so they do not fall if snow slides off the roof knocking workers off the ladder or leaving them stranded on the roof. Generally remove snow from the most heavily loaded areas first. Remove snow in narrow strips instead of large areas to help keep loading somewhat uniform. Don’t pile removed snow onto snow-covered roof areas increasing the load in those areas. Use plastic shovels or wooden roof rakes to avoid damaging roofing material. Don’t feel as if all snow must be removed. A layer of snow next to the roof surface can protect the surface from damage during the snow removal process. Do not pick or chip at ice near the roof surface to avoid damaging roofing material. Do not use snowblowers as they can damage the roof. — from UW-Extension

New Year’s Day free to see and do

With the opening of the new addition, the Body Shop now has more equipment than anyone else within a wide radius. Here owner Matt Dryden stands on his latest piece of equipment with daughters Tia and Mya. — Photos submitted equipment to assist those who have been in a physical therapy program and now are on their own. “I want people to realize the importance of beginning on a continuing fitness program for the betterment of their lifestyle or the lifestyle they wish to have. Any age is the right age to exercise.” This facility is more than just a fitness center, as the name Body Shop states, because there are also two tanning rooms available and tanning lotions and aftertan skin-care products. To complete your experience there is a heated hydro-massage table, where you lay fully dressed and 96-degree water is pulsated through jets as it provides a full-body massage. Both are available in a tranquil spa set-

ting for your relaxing pleasure. “Many people fall asleep during a massage or tanning session and it has done what is was meant to do, to give you 15 to 20 minutes to yourself to relax and leave the stresses of life behind if even for a short time.” The grand opening is on Saturday, Jan. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be free refreshments, free tanning and free hydro massages and door prizes. Don’t miss this opportunity to see what’s available for you as this new year approaches. For more information call the Body Shop at 715-468-7776. — submitted

SHELL LAKE — Now that the new year is right around the corner you’re not the only one who thinks you should get back into shape. No, we’re not talking about your significant other; we’re talking about your doctor. Maybe you’ve been thinking about doing something to start to make a change in your body, to be stronger and more flexible so that your everyday life is not as much of a physical struggle. Now that the long winter months are here, according to the Farmer’s Almanac and all the weather services, it will be a long, cold winter with lots of snow to shovel. Why not get into better shape now? If you stop in at the Body Shop Fitness Center in Shell Lake on New Year’s Day you can see for yourself and it’s all free. Owner Matt Dryden is opening his entire facility for free tanning, hydro massage, refreshments and equipment usage, just remember to bring gym shoes and wear comfortable clothing. Or, if you don’t have the time that day, grab a coupon and come back on your schedule. Dryden is celebrating the third anniversary of his Body Shop Fitness Center and another part of the celebration includes experiencing the new 2,200square-foot retro gym addition. “You might say it’s an old-school gym like those from years ago with unique equipment for body building, fitness and sports-specific training. There are cardio ropes, as seen on Ropes Gone Wild via YouTube, chains, heavy-duty resistance bands, punching bags, speed bag, sledgehammers, tires and dumbbells up to 150 pounds.” This gym was built to adapt to different training arenas such the typical bodypower lifting, cardio building, kickboxing, group fitness classes and specialized athletic training. This addition also allows the two large garage doors to be opened, season appropriate, allowing the members to continue lifting outdoors overlooking beautiful Shell Lake. “It’s like California’s Venice Beach comes to Shell Lake.” In the original gym, updating has been done in the cardio theater that includes a variety of equipment such as ellipticals, treadmills, stair steppers and several stationary bike options. There is a wide variety of cable machines, plate-loaded equipment and dumbbells all sitting on a new rubber-matted floor. Dryden offers consultation in weight loss and management along with designing personal fitness programs based on client’s goals. The fitness center has incorporated

by Shawn Johnson Wisconsin Public Radio MADISON - Democratic state lawmakers are still debating amongst themselves whether to call an extraordinary session to pass overdue state employee contracts. Several state workers showed up at the Capitol Tuesday, Dec. 14, to urge legislators to ratify these contracts. But it was Marty Biel, longtime director of the Wisconsin State Employees Union, who was the most adamant. He told reporters legislators have a duty to take this vote. “They still are elected officials. If they want to go Christmas shopping instead of dealing with state employees, so be it. But they will reap the punishment for that.” The contracts themselves include no raises and continued unpaid furloughs that amount to 3-percent pay cuts. They also call for members to pay more for their health care and retirement. Gov.-elect Scott Walker has said he wants more concessions. Kenosha resident Deborah Prijic showed up at a public hearing to testify against the deals. She told lawmakers they should wait for Walker to take office, asking them to not tie the hands of the incoming administration. Approval of the contracts is by no means a done deal. Outgoing Majority Leader Russ Decker has yet to call an extraordinary session to vote on the contracts and he gave no sign Tuesday that he would. It’s left Democrats like Madison Sen. Fred Risser contemplating ways to get around Decker. Risser says there are a couple of options, one is to get half the Senate to sign a petition for an extraordinary session. He says another procedural option is to have the majority party, which is still the Democratic Party — select new leaders. “You’ll remember the leadership was changed during the session several years ago,” says Risser. “Could happen again, I don’t know.” The options Risser mentioned are far from ordinary, and the fact that Democrats are even mulling them is a clear sign that the normally mundane contract approval process has taken a different turn this year.

CESA 11 Rural Health Dental Clinic visits Shell Lake school

pay. He says the biggest cause for dental access issues in the state is directly related to the low reimbursement rates that dentists get for treating people on Medicare and BadgerCare. Wisconsin currently has only one dental school, at Marquette in Milwaukee. Most dental and medical programs are in urban areas, but the president of Marshfield Clinic, Karl Ulrich, says the proposed school would help even things out and may entice graduates to work in less-populated areas. “The thought is, if we train people in less urban areas, the chances of them retaining some sites and professionalism in rural areas would be enhanced.” Ulrich says Marshfield Clinic currently partners with the state on seven dental sites in northern and central Wisconsin. He says the number of patients who need care in that area is overwhelming and that there’s a

by Shamane Mills Wisconsin Public Radio MARSHFIELD - The state building commission approved $10 million toward a new dental school in central Wisconsin. Some question whether this will solve a longstanding problem of access in some parts of the state. A dental group says Wisconsin really needs to pay more to provide tooth care for low-income people and that access issues won’t necessarily be addressed by locating a dental school in a rural area. Gene Shoemaker is president of the Wisconsin Dental Association. That group was originally neutral on the Marshfield location when it was first proposed as an educational facility, not a dental school. Shoemaker says this doesn’t solve the longstanding issue of what dentists get to care for patients who can’t

Colton Wykel probably wishes he was in class taking a spelling test rather than in the principal’s office that has been set up as a temporary dental clinic. The clinic was part of the CESA 11 Rural Health Dental Clinic that was at the school Wednesday, Dec. 15 and saw 30 children.

Linda Degner, Bashaw Valley Greenhouse, put her skills to work making this 8-foot wreath that greets shoppers at Economart in Spooner. It took Degner about 2-1/2 hours to make and decorate. “I had to put the greens on early in November when the weather was nice, and I could work outside because it was too big to put together inside the garage where we make all the wreaths. It was then covered in a shaded area to stay cool until I could decorate it.” The wreath took approximately 75 pounds of boughs and two spools of wire. The pinecones came from Alabama and extra-wide ribbon had to be ordered to make the bow. “The wreath was great fun to make,” commented Degner. “I believe it is the largest wreath in Spooner and maybe even Washburn County.” — Photo by Suzanne Johnson

Hammered dulcimer concert at Lake Park Alliance

SHELL LAKE — The 2010 National Hammered Dulcimer Champion, Ted Yoder, will perform music from his new Christmas album, “Comfort and Joy,” at Lake Park Alliance Church in Shell Lake on Sunday, Jan. 2, at 5 p.m. All are invited to attend this Christmas concert with refreshments to follow. A freewill offering will be taken. “The goal of my music is to take the breath of every day and sing it through the hammer dulcimer. Our days pulse with the beat of life — from the gorgeous strains of wedding music or the tender memories of the birth of a child to the darker tones of the loss of a loved one. All of these moments add cadence and chords of intense beauty and passion to the sound track of our lives. Our stories write the music and in the melodies we hear home, friendship and love. Pause and listen. Life is beautiful, it is fleeting and it is now. Live life now,” commented Yoder. Come, bring a friend to enjoy a last celebration of this holiday season. Barronett by Judy Pieper

Imagine a drumroll here! We finally have a shop open in Barronett. Organic and Local 20 Mile General Store opened for business Friday evening. Duane went over to do some shopping there and said they have fantastic frozen custard, produce, cheese and handcrafted items. You still have a couple of days to shop before Christmas so why not come check it out and see what they have. You’ll be amazed. We had a lot of fun at the women’s Christmas party on Saturday. There were about a dozen attendees, mostly women from Barronett Lutheran but Annie Egstad brought a couple of guests — her sister-in-law and niece, Judy and Sherry Snowbank. The food was excellent. Peg Thompson read one very touching poem and one very funny poem. We sang carols, gambled and stole, and had a wonderful time. We’d like to thank Geri Pittman for organizing things this year. The Sunday school Christmas program, which was presented on Sunday evening, was very well-attended. Peg Thompson rounded up every child that she could find in the area to help with the program. The little actors and actresses were: Holly Hendrick, Max Hendrick, Ethan Thompson, Zachary Thompson, Morgan Neitzel, Trystin Neitzel, Casihm Rivera and Erika Yawn. The title of the play this year was, “You Can’t Cancel Christmas.” After the play, refreshments were served in the church basement. We’d all like to thank Peg and her helper, Becky Hendrick, for all the hard work they did with rehearsals, props and getting the children ready for the play. Congratulations go out to Jennifer Rasmussen and Gordon Patraw who were married at Barronett Lutheran on Sunday, Dec. 19. We wish them many years of marital bliss.

Pumarlo; and great-aunt Janet Lombard. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 23, at the Spooner Wesleyan Church in Spooner, with the Rev. Ron Gormong officiating. Visitation will be held from 3-8 p.m., Wednesday and 10-11 a.m., Thursday at the Spooner Wesleyan Church, 1100 W. Maple St., Spooner. The Appleyard’s Home for Funerals, Rice Lake, was entrusted with arrangements.

Melissa S. Gabrio

Melissa S. Gabrio, 31, died unexpectedly Saturday Dec. 18, 2010, at Osceola Medical Center, Osceola. Melissa was born Dec. 10, 1979, at Shell Lake to David and Dawn Davey. She graduated from Pequot Lakes High School in 1998 and attended Central Lakes Community College in Brainerd. Melissa worked as a convenience store manager. In her free time she enjoyed scrapbooking, reading, family and friends. Melissa was preceded in death by her grandparents, great-grandparents, uncle Mike Marion and great-uncle Norman Elliott. She is survived by her daughters, Emily Davidson, Bailey Gabrio; son, Logan Gabrio; parents David and Dawn Davey; sister, Devon Davey of Taylors Falls, Minn.; boyfriend, Nelson Bloom; grandparents, Jean Marion of Siren, Don Davey of Phoenix, Ariz., Pete and Juanita Parendo of South Range; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 28, at the Grandstrand Funeral Home in Lindstrom. Condolences may be left at www.grandstrandfh.com. The Grandstrand Funeral Home, Lindstrom, was entrusted with arrangements.

I had a very strange phone call this week. A man called and said he was looking at a beautiful Norwegian wedding cake but wasn’t allowed to touch it because it belonged to Sharon Herman. I told him I had one that was nearly identical right in front of me. He was a very good talker, so he got the one in front of me for his mother. I hope she enjoys it. The BCC girls hockey team played in a tournament in Ashland this weekend. There were teams from Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota and Canada. They lost the first game to a team from Michigan, beat Ashland in the second game and they lost to Ozaki in the consolation playoffs. That broke their winning streak but they plan to go into their next game playing even harder and we know that they will do well. We had breakfast at the Red Brick Cafe with Pooch and Ken Olson on Sunday morning. Pooch and Ken were up just for the day and were going back to White Bear Lake, Minn., to spend Christmas with their family. We wish Marilynn Shaurette a belated happy birthday. Marilynn celebrated her birthday on Dec. 15 at the Bistro. She especially enjoyed Sharon Herman and Rachel Nickell’s rendition of “Happy Birthday.” We had some sad news this week. Geri Pittman told us that she’d talked to Pastor John Simundson and he told her that Alice has been very ill. Please remember the Simundson family in your prayers. Sharai Hefty reported that Erv Greb is very ill. Please remember the Greb family in your prayers, too. I hope you have a very merry Christmas! I guess that’s about all I know from Barronett this week. See you next time.

Luke 2:11 is an ocean of thought in a drop of words. It begins with you and it ends with the Lord. It’s personal: “Unto you is born …” It opened my eyes to the love of God and my heart to the God of love. It’s profitable: “Unto you is born this day … a Savior.” He was born in a supernatural way, without a human father and without sin; for a Jesus born in sin couldn’t save us from our sins. It’s pleasurable: Jesus brings “great joy.” There are two sides to a gift, giving and receiving. God gave the savior on the first Christmas morning. Isn’t it time you received him? Jordan Anthony Lombard, 26, Spooner, died Dec. 17, 2010. Jordan was en route to his home to spend his final days at home with his family, friends and his beloved pets. Jordan had graciously and courageously battled illness for the past few years, all the while maintaining his sense of humor and touching the people around him. Jordan was born to Anthony and Perri (Rohde) Lombard on Oct. 30, 1984, in St. Paul, Minn. Jordan’s life was full of activity and friends. His love of cows, Subway, Wii bowling, movies, making phone calls, dancing at weddings, his “boy, Jack” the dog and his family was evident to all. Jordan had participated in Special Olympics and always enjoyed being recognized for his finish, no matter what the place. His passion for football was the core of who he was. A Sunday of church, breakfast with family and friends after, followed by an afternoon of football was the perfect day for Jordan. Whether at the grocery store, the hospital, at church or at a restaurant, Jordan was always making new friends and entertaining old ones. His outgoing personality and sense of humor charmed everyone he encountered. Jordan touched, impacted and enriched so many lives in his short time here; he will be greatly missed by many people far and wide. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Fred Rohde, and an aunt Stacy, Lombard. Jordan is survived by his parents, Tony and Perri Lombard, Spooner; brother Joshua Shervey (Grace), Spooner; sister Caitlin Lombard (Scot), Minneapolis, Minn.; nephew Aris Shervey; paternal grandparents Bob and Ruth Lombard, Spooner; maternal grandmother Phyllis Rohde, Spooner; uncle Mike (Leslie) Rohde; cousin Amy (Dan)

Friendship Commons by Theresa Sigmund

Our Christmas party was well-attended. Those present were Connee and Tim Brabec, Ruth Twining, Mable Perry, Sally Peterson, Carol Hubin, Mary and Marvin Raeshler, Theresa Sigmund, Mary Ellen Ryall, Marie Shipley, Janice Nelson, Mabel Blaha and Bill Campbell. It sure was a fun day. Santa was here. He passed out gifts, and we all sat on his lap, one at a time of course. We had our pictures taken with him. Thank you, Tim. Our dinner was very good. We were served chicken and rice along with dessert, milk coffee and bread.

Ruth Twining surprised us by singing and tap dancing. It was awesome. Mary Raeshler played the guitar and sang Christmas songs beautifully. We also had a sing-along. While waiting for supper of sandwiches and lots of cookies, some of us played Smear while others chatted. I brought cookies back to the apartment, and a group of us women sat soaking our feet and eating cookies waiting for Donna’s clippers. Altogether it was an interesting day.

There was only four of us at Tuesday night Smear. So we decided to start playing Smear starting Tuesday, Dec. 28, at 1 p.m. Book club will start Monday, Jan. 31, at 1 p.m. Our tree will come down Wednesday, Jan. 5. One day this week I’ll spend the afternoon at Terraceview Living Center playing cards with Gerry Baker and whoever wants to join us. Laughter translates into any language. – from a Menard’s flyer

Elementary school Principal Mike Werner sang a solo with the fourth-grade class. While most of the students liked his singing, two young girls in the front row seemed more critical of his ability.

Santa’s helpers

by Larry Samson SPOONER — Sometimes Santa needs a little help for Christmas Day. That’s why the Spooner-Trego and Shell Lake Lions clubs have set up the Christmas fund to help area families. This marks the 25th year that the Spooner-Trego Lions Club has lived up to the Christmas spirit. The Shell Lake Lions Club has been involved with the project for several years; the cooperation between the two organizations has been outstanding. The member volunteers gathered at the United Methodist Church in Spooner on Wednesday, Dec. 15, packaging the requests from 200 families. “My goal this year was 200 and we reached that goal,” project manager Brenda DeWitt said. In her fourth year as project manager, she is overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support the communities have given. “We would not be able to do this if it were not for their generosity of the people in the community.” The work is not easy, but the volunteers working in an orderly fashion make it look easy. The volunteers worked three days sorting and packing everything for distribution on Friday, Dec. 17.

Five-year-old Cadence DeWitt holds the presents that will go to some little child in the area due to the efforts of members in the community who opened their hearts and donated to the Christmas fund. Her grandmother, Brenda DeWitt, is the project manager for the Spooner-Trego and Shell Lake Lions Club Christmas Fund program that will bring smiles to many children this Christmas.

RIGHT - Spooner-Trego Lions Club member Mary Kutchere is making a list and checking it twice to make sure that every family has their needs and wants fulfilled this Christmas. The book she is looking through contains the wishes for 200 families from the area for this Christmas.

Three-year-old Eve helps her great-grandfather, charter member Tom DeWitt. This is DeWitt’s 25th year as a volunteer to the Christmas fund project.

LEFT - Packaging the food boxes that will make a Christmas dinner for area families in these troubling times is a monumental undertaking. Working together, the Spooner-Trego and Shell Lake Lions Club volunteers pack enough food for 200 families.
