From tranquil farmland waters to treacherous wilderness rapids, four young Iowans in two old canoes experienced an adventure that every kid talks about, but few take. With leaky tents, little experience, and no TV cameras or bigtime sponsors, the lads set out in 1979 on a 2-1/2-month journey from Minnesota to the polar bears of Hudson Bay. Three decades later, their inspiring and heartwarming tale has been captured in the book, “This Water Goes North.” Author Dennis Weidemann will be presenting a slide show of the expedition at the Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum, 312 Front St., Spooner, on Friday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. Books will be available for sale and signing. — from WCHM SARONA —The Sarona United Methodist Church will be holding a two-day centennial celebration on Saturday, Aug. 27, and Sunday, Aug. 28. Saturday ceremonies will begin at 11 a.m. with a rededication service and program including former pastors, special music presentations by the Shell Lake congregation and sharing memories of the past. At 1 p.m. a full dinner will be served followed by socializing, viewing of historical picture boards, tours of the enhanced church building and just simply reminiscing with neighbors and friends. Everyone is invited to come and stay the day. Sunday worship service will be held at the normal time of 9 a.m. followed by coffee and cake. On sale during the celebration will be a centennial book covering the past 100 years since the formation of the church, organ music CDs by organist Jean Henntsch and signed and framed pictures by Bill Hrudka. Come and help the congregation of the Sarona United Methodist Church celebrate this great event. — submitted
