WASHBURN COUNTY – Carol Buck, emergency management director, wants to ensure that the county is prepared for the worst of winter weather. “If we get an ice storm, we could be without electricity for a long duration. It is important for people to be prepared,” she said. “Our people around here know how to survive in the winter, but the most important thing is to plan for the unexpected.” For instance, in Kansas, after an ice storm almost the entire state was without electricity for almost 30 days. “It’s important to have water to drink because your pump isn’t going to work for the faucet,” Buck noted. “You have to have a way to cook food, stay warm and survive until help can come. The standard used to be three days, and now it has been urged to prepare for five days and even talk about going up to seven days. If the power lines are down, it’s going to take a long time for people to get electricity restored. What’s important is to be prepared for the unexpected. If you end up down in a ditch where no one can see you, it’s important that you have your gas tank filled up, having winter clothes on hand, a little food, a candle, the cell phone with charger.” Buck also confirms that if you have a digital home phone, the phone will not work after a few hours and it is important to have backup. Another option is to make sure that neighbors check on neighbors in case of emergency. Steps to getting prepared can be found on the Washburn County Web site under Emergency Management. Buck has included links to the state Web site that shows in detail ways to be prepared. – Jessica Beecroft
