SHELL LAKE — The Washburn County Board of Supervisors invites youth in grades 9, 10 and 11 who are residents of Washburn County to apply to serve as youth representatives on the county board. This initiative provides Washburn County youth an opportunity to play a valuable and active leadership role in the governance of the county while enhancing their interest in the operation of local government and civic participation. Two young people will be selected to serve a one-year term, April 2012–April 2013, and three will be selected to serve a two-year term, April 2012–April 2014. “Youth who are currently serving in these roles have found their experience to be very educational and a good use of their time. County board supervisors have been very supportive and recognize the value of having the voice of young people on the board,” said Annette Haas, 4-H youth development educator in Washburn County. Application materials are online at washburn.uwex.edu/4-h-youth-development/ or contact the Washburn County UW-Extension Office in Spooner, 715-635-4444. Deadline for submitting application materials is Monday, Feb. 27. — from UWExtension •••

IOWA - The smallest of margins - eight votes - gave GOP front-runner Mitt Romney a victory over dark horse Rick Santorum in the Iowa caucuses Tuesday night, Jan. 3, with Ron Paul finishing third. It was the opening contest for the GOP presidential nomination. Romney earned 30,015 votes and Santorum 30,007 votes. The losers Tuesday were Newt Gingrich in fourth, Rick Perry in fifth and Michele Bachmann in sixth. The outcome offered Santorum an opportunity to emerge as the alternative to Romney as the race moves to New Hampshire and South Carolina without Gov. Rick Perry, who announced that he was returning to Texas to assess his candidacy. “The Iowa caucuses did not deliver a clean answer to what type of candidate Republicans intend to rally behind to try to defeat President Obama and win back the White House,” noted an article Wednesday in the New York Times. Which GOP candidate, if any, do you support? See the Register’s poll question below. - with information from Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and New York Times
