Celebration of Lights continues in municipal park SHELL LAKE — Until January, residents and guests of Shell Lake can continue to enjoy the Shell Lake Lions-sponsored Celebration of Lights in the municipal park and campground. There is no cost to participate in the Celebration of Lights and this year there are 40 displays set up, including 12 new participants this season. The goal next year is to fill all the available spaces. The students in Shell Lake High School’s science, technology, engineering and math class created the winning display. Bob Forsythe and Darin Pollei teach the class. The judges felt that the STEM display was “highly creative and aligned perfectly with the festive theme.” The sails, decorated with an elf and snowman, use wind power to help showcase the display. If you haven’t already done so, treat yourself with a visit to the campground to enjoy the Celebration of Lights. — with submitted information

Pay increases, health-care consultant addressed by county board Danielle Danford | Staff writer SHELL LAKE — Three Washburn County highway management staff members will get an interim 15-percent pay increase after a vote by the Washburn County Board of Supervisors at their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 15. The three employees receiving the increase in salaries are the highway operations manager, highway office manager and highway field supervisor, because of workload increases since the former county highway commissioner resigned. The increase in pay would be made in back pay to those employees for hours worked from Oct. 8 until after a reasonable transition period once a new highway commissioner is hired. The funds will be paid from the highway department’s wages and salaries account balance. During board discussion, Dave Wilson, board representative 11, stated he didn’t think he’d heard a substantial reason for the pay increase, which was recommended at 7 percent over existing county policy. Wilson added that at least three other county employees have taken on other management tasks but were not given above the 8-percent policy recommendation. Greg Krantz, highway committee chair and board representative 13, stated there were discrepancies in the policy causing misunderstanding and that “these people have worked hard and they deserve the compensation.” The interim increase in pay was approved on a 14-to-5 roll-call vote. Health care consultant When the board took up a motion to approve the Horton Group’s proposal to be the county’s 2016 health-care consultant, some county board members shared their concerns and criticism of the measure. Horton was hired as the county’s consultant for 2015 to be the go-between for the county and potential health insurers to make sure the county was getting the best health insurance that followed Affordable Care Act rules and was affordable to the

county. The personnel committee recommended Horton continue their consultation status with the county to ensure those same measures be met in 2016. Horton’s consultation comes at a cost of $12,000 annually that is paid out $1,000 each month. Two board members, Beth Esser and Terry Leckel Jr., pointed out their concerns that Horton’s proposal states they may receive additional compensation from insurance companies or vendors in the form of contingent commission or bonus commission.

Thomas Ricci, board representative 6, stated he questions why the human resources director can’t handle the issue and that the county association has assistance that should be utilized instead of paying a consultant. The proposal was approved on a 17-to-2 roll-call vote with Ricci and Esser voting against the motion to approve. Previous to the roll-call vote, Esser motioned to table the resolution but it died for lack of second. Board members Michael Bobin and Clay Halverson were not in attendance for the duration of the meeting but board Chair Sather stated their absences were excused. Other resolutions approved by the board were: • Authorizing the withdrawal from the local government property insurance fund. • Ratification of the 2016 Jailer/Dispatchers Association Local 423 agreement. • Increase the 2015 Washburn County Aging and Disability Resource Center budget because the department was awarded a grant. This topic is covered in a separate story in this edition. See, New nutrition programs to benefit Washburn County seniors. • Carry over 2015 funds to the 2016 emergency government department budget. • Increase the 2015 highway department budget because the department received a wellness grant. • Authorize participation in the Department of Natural Resources dam grant program for the Birch Lake Dam project.

Sarona man bound over for trial in sexual assault case Danielle Danford | Staff writer SHELL LAKE - Probable cause was found in Washburn County court on Monday, Dec. 14, to bring a Sarona man to trial on a charge of repeated sexual assault of a child. Defense attorney Scott Schlough entered a not guilty plea for his client and defendant Russell Wilson, 48, Sarona, who has a cash bond set at $25,000.

Washburn County Sheriff’s Deputy William Shafer was called to the witness stand by District Attorney Tom Frost, whose line of questioning revealed the victim’s mother knew about the ongoing sexual assaults which she said began this past summer, previous to the victim’s 16th birthday. Frost’s questioning also proved that the victim had identified the person who had sexually assaulted her on at least

three occasions. Shafer stated the victim’s mother told him she knew about the assaults for about five weeks. Schlough’s cross-examination was limited to a question clarifying the date of when the sexual assaults took place. First-degree sexual assault of a child has a $100,000 maximum fine and four years imprisonment.

Wilson was found guilty of first-degree sexual assault of a child in 1993 in Barron County. Washburn County Judge Eugene Harrington stated that if the state can prove Wilson is a repeat offender a penalty enhancer could increase the sentence to life imprisonment.

Shell Lake woman pursued on multicounty high-speed chase SHELL LAKE — A Shell Lake woman, stopped for an equipment and seat belt violation, led law enforcement on a multicounty high-speed chase on Tuesday, Dec. 15. Lois A. Keenan, 28, had an active warrant for her arrest when she was pulled over by a Wisconsin state trooper at approximately 3 p.m. on CTH J located west of Hwy. 63 in Washburn County. Keenan’s driving status was also revoked and when

the trooper told Keenan to exit her vehicle, a handgun was seen by the center console. Keenan then fled the scene in the vehicle. The trooper pursued Keenan into Burnett County and eventually reached speeds of 115 mph. During the pursuit, Keenan tossed the handgun out the window while she went northbound on CTH H. The pursuit crossed Hwy. 70 and continued north on CTH H when Burnett

County deputies joined in the pursuit. Burnett County deputies eventually took over the pursuit because the state trooper sustained a flat tire. A short time later Keenan crashed on CTH A near Lipsett Lake Road. Keenan fled on foot from the crash scene but was eventually found in a tree and taken into custody. The discarded handgun, a loaded 44-magnum revolver, was found and secured by law enforcement.

Keenan is currently being held at the Burnett County Sheriff’s Department. Officers from the Wisconsin State Patrol, St. Croix Tribal Police Department, and Burnett and Washburn County Sheriff’s departments assisted in the search. — Danielle Danford with information from the Wisconsin State Patrol

New nutrition programs to benefit Washburn County seniors Danielle Danford | Staff writer SHELL LAKE — Eggs and toast or blueberry pancakes are some of the breakfast options the Washburn County Aging and Disability Resource Center will offer at Schmitz’s Economart in Spooner starting Tuesday, Jan. 5. The new breakfast program called Rise N Dine was made possible through a $20,000 nutrition grant the Washburn County Aging and Disability Resource Center was awarded. “The mission of this revitalization initiative is to foster, encourage, and promote choice, innovation and opportunities for partnership that increase the nutritional and social well-being of older adults,” said Darby Simpson, interim nutrition program coordinator for Washburn

County ADRC. The Rise N Dine will take place from 7 to 11 a.m. starting Jan. 5 at the deli of Schmitz’s Economart in Spooner. “We are asking for a donation of $3.50 per meal but people can donate what they can afford,” said Stephanie Villella, Washburn County ADRC director. All meal donations are kept confidential. By providing another breakfast program along with the existing lunch program, the ADRC staff hopes to reach more adults 60 and older while offering balanced nutrition, socialization and independence. The Rise N Dine program was also made possible by Schmitz’s Economart in Spooner who partnered with the ADRC. “We are excited to work with the

county and offer great value to seniors for breakfast,” said Ted Schmitz, owner of Schmitz’s Economart. The Washburn County ADRC was one of eight ADRCs in the state to receive this funding from the Bureau of Aging and Disability Resources. The grant will also be used to fund grocery store tours and cooking classes at Economart. These programs will start in the spring of 2016. “A registered dietitian will be offering tours about where to find different things that are healthy for them and each week will feature a different topic,” said Villella. The twice a month tours will also include a healthy educational session with the registered dietician and once a month Ar-

lene Coco, a professional chef, will lead cooking demonstrations. “She is a wonderful chef with a lot of experience and she’s going to be helping us out and doing those demonstrations right at Economart,” said Villella. Chef Coco did a cooking class last year that was also funded through the county. The January and February editions of Washburn County ADRC’s Focus for Life paper will have more information about the tours and cooking classes. Villella and Simpson also encourage people with questions, comments and concerns to call them at the county’s ADRC office at 715635-4460.

Mother and son rescued from overturned vehicle SHELL LAKE - A mother and her son were rescued from their vehicle after icy road conditions caused it to swerve off the roadway and land in a pond on Saturday, Dec. 19. Alice Ridgeway, Barronett, and her 12-year-old son became trapped in the

Chrysler van which had landed on its side and broke through the thin ice covering the pond. Two Barronett residents, Charlie and Sally Wiesner, and a FedEx driver, name unknown, came upon the scene. Together these strangers got Ridgeway and her son to safety. Besides being wet, cold

and having few bruises, the mother and son had no serious injuries. “Both helped me out, and we waited in the guy’s car, while his wife brought us blankets, until the authorities arrived. We are … Just shook up and feel like we’ve been tossed in a blender,”Ridgeway stated

after the incident. The Washburn County Sheriff’s Office, Shell Lake Fire Department, and Cumberland Ambulance responded to the scene.Danielle Danford with information from DrydenWire.com

O’Connell considered for Kohl Teacher Fellowship SPOONER — Spooner Middle School teacher Michelle O’Connell will be considered by the state selection committee for a Kohl Teacher Fellowship. The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation offers the Kohl Teacher Fellowship annually to 100 teachers across Wisconsin. Teachers are recognized for their passion, commitment to students, and their ability to inspire a love of learning. “Spooner Middle School is very proud to have Mrs.

O’Connell on the team,” said Principal Brad Larrabee. “Her daily efforts inspire our students and staff and her passion for education is deserving of this recognition.” O’Connell was nominated for the Kohl Teacher Fellowship by her peers and principal. Recently, the local cooperative educational service agency, CESA 11, selected O’Connell’s application, out of more than 30, to send forward to the state selection committee. The Kohl Educational Foundation and the state selection commit-

tee will convene in February 2016 and applicants will be notified in March. Should O’Connell receive the prestigious Kohl Teacher Fellowship, she would be awarded $3,000 and the Spooner Middle School would receive $3,000 in matched funding. — from SASD

SHS seeks local photography SPOONER — The construction of Spooner Health System’s replacement hospital is going well with expected occupancy to occur in May 2016. “Early on in the building project,” says Mike Schafer, SHS CEO, “we formed a group to work closely with BWBR Architects to select interior finishes.”

To complement the interior, Spooner Health System is seeking photo submissions of local outdoor nature. Amateur and professional photographers are welcome to submit. CROIX FALLS — Author and former WCCO-TV news anchor Don Shelby will be performing as Mark Twain in his one-man show, “An Afternoon with Mark Twain,” at The Phipps Center for the Arts, 109 Locust St., Hudson, on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016. Shelby is an active outdoorsman and is passionate about protecting the St. Croix. In his play, Shelby will recount the life and times of Mark Twain on the river. When Shelby takes the stage, after a two-hour makeup transformation, he brings alive the life of Samuel Clemens, through a collection of actual Twain quotes and stories. The words spoken onstage are Twain’s entirely — humorous, dramatic, insightful and richly evocative of a past era of our history. Shelby has performed this show for 25 years and each time his hope is that for the two hours, the audience will not see the

news anchor, but rather be “transported back in time.” Best known for his novel “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” 1876, and its sequel, “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” 1884, Twain also worked as a master riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before the Civil War. Heart of the community comes together SPOONER — When a community comes together to help meet the needs of those less fortunate, it can overwhelm you with gratitude for the essence of giving. That is exactly what happened to locally owned and operated Spooner Physical Therapy Rehab Specialists in the month of November. Owner and director Dr. Erik Larson, DPT, hosted his annual food drive partnering with Chuck and Sue Adams of the Washburn County Food Pantry. In the spirit of the great people of Spooner, 50 patients and residents came together to double the amount of food donated at last year’s drive to an astonishing 600 pounds of food. The Adamses were overwhelmed with gratitude for the outpouring of generosity of the people of Spooner. Their organization is solely nonprofit and 100 percent of the donations always go to families in need. Sue Adams made sure her gratitude didn’t go unsaid, stating, “We were completely overwhelmed by the amount of food. This is going to feed a lot of families in need. We truly appreciate your help. We are so very thankful to receive over 600 pounds in food donations; this food will go to many people in need this year right here in Spooner and the surrounding area.” Also during the month of November, alongside the food drive, Larson’s clinic held a coloring contest for

the little ones. The windows of the physical therapy clinic were covered in artwork made by the children of Spooner. Displayed proudly were 300 admissions for the contest. The enthusiasm of the local children was evident as they accompanied their parents to donate food. The clinic selected five winners, all of whom received a $10 gift card to Denelies. Excitement was in the air of this great community as the citizens came together, giving one of the most basic things we oftentimes take for granted, food. Dr. Larson and his staff at Spooner Physical Therapy have always kept a deep conviction to give back to the town that has given them so much through the years, a sense of home. The talented young artist winners were: Kindergarten: Graceann Harris, Spooner; first grade: Addison Robarti, Spooner; second grade: Zoie Richards, Shell Lake; third grade: Hailey Stariha, Spooner; and fourth grade: Shania Rogers, Shell Lake. Another exciting thing that Spooner Physical Therapy did was anyone who dropped off an item of food got entered into a drawing for $50 in Chamber Bucks. The lucky winner of that drawing was Ella Kostner. Larson is profoundly grateful to Ted Schmitz, owner of Schmitz Economart, who gave a sizable donation. Schmitz was proud to help out, giving back in what he

is passionate about to begin with, feeding the residents of Spooner. “We are proud to be longtime supporters of the WCFP and the great things they do for our county. We make weekly donations to the food pantry throughout the year and are happy to do so, but it is especially gratifying to assist such a vital organization during the holiday season. We were pleased to match funds with Spooner Physical Therapy during their food drive.” Schmitz said. Having a strong sense of compassion and duty to less fortunate people within the Spooner family, Larson is touched by the outpouring of support the food drive received. In his own words he says it best, that it takes a village to build a foundation of community. Whether you’re running a physical therapy clinic, helping injured folks get their lives back, or helping out a family that may be out of work and can’t provide food for their families, that it is imperative that a strong village sticks together, through rain and shine. “First off I need to thank Chuck and Sue Adams for the saint-like work they are doing in Washburn County, really amazing people. Ted Schmitz is also a pillar in the community and donated a very sizable amount of food. We must recognize the many, many community members, patients, friends and families who really got behind the second-annual food drive and more than doubled last year’s total donation. Register memories 1955 – 60 Years Ago • The Lakers won their fifth game in as many starts by defeating Minong 70-40. Bob Parks and Dick Swan hit the double figures for the Lakers with 16 and 14 points respectively. • The ice-skating rink in Shell Lake was flooded and the warming house opened and the floodlights were turned on. The Boy Scouts maintained the rink and the public was asked to help to keep the rink clear of snow. • A severe chimney fire at the Earl Cusick home destroyed the chimney. • Mrs. Roy Stellrecht was the new correspondent for the South Shell Lake news published in the Register.

1965 – 50 Years Ago

• White Birch Printing was selling new and used typewriters and adding machines. A 500-sheet ream of typing paper was $1.25. • Brad Pederson and his dad, Wendell, caught a nice 7-pound, 2-ounce walleye in Shell Lake while fishing in the South Bay using live minnows for bait. • Winners of the Christmas home decoration contest were Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Arrasmith, first place; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Brown, second; and C.L. Lewis, third. Honorable mention went to the Jacobs boys’ tree house, John Schnell, Glenn Hile, Milt Lenz, Charles Foley, J.B. Beardsley, D.V. Moen and Jack Blume. • Luther League members from the three churches of the Barronett Parish presented a Christmas candlelight service at the Barronett church. The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. Am I crazy or am I grieving?

his was subject of a video viewed by my grief support group. The attendees’ lost loved ones ran the gamut. Although my wife, Dora, had only been gone for 2-1⁄2 weeks, these meetings were greatly beneficial for me. Our first assignment was to talk to our deceased loved one and about them to others frequently, using their name. Perhaps this sounds odd but it made changes. The confusion gave way to clarity, frozen to thawed, withdrawn to open and disbelief to reality. The wall holding back emotions and feelings began to crumble. I had many nicknames for Dora. However nothing was sweeter to my ears than when she said “Jim.” Ensuing weeks saw us bring things of our loved one. They could be personal items, artifacts, poems, pictures or stories. In short, anything descriptive of them. Shared sometimes through a sprinkling of tears, these items related volumes about this lost person. I brought pictures of some of Dora’s creations. Often people said, “Dora is so very talented.” Another week we discussed what we learned from our lost love. The more we met and shared the more we were like peeling onions, layer after layer, removal revealing our broken hearts. Some things I learned from our leader, the rest of the group and videos are that everyone grieves differently and at their own pace. As Americans, we want rapid closure. As I walked from my wife’s graveside service a friend said, “Well, Jim, now you have closure and can move on.” It does not work that way nor that quickly. Neither does grieving move from completed stage to completed stage. Emotions ebb and flow and wash over you in waves tossing back and forth. At first I kept busy. If I occupied my thoughts I

Community voices James Coil would not have time to feel so much hurt. This does not work except temporarily for some relief. It simply postpones the grieving process. It is a journey you must travel. No one can do it for you. Memories with accompanying feelings and emotions are set off by what is termed “triggers.” As I see couples walking hand in hand it reminds me of us. I had every detail planned. Dora, my new love, and I would walk down the railroad right of way, stop, talk and kiss. I had not planned on the rain. She did not mind the rain. Ah, those first months of falling in love were awesome! While swirling in a romantic haze, I crashed into the back of our office on my riding lawn mower. A quick patch and I told no one. That is until now. Although it has been months since my Dora died, coming home late from work I remember how she used to be fighting sleep waiting up for me to make certain I got home safely. Or when I learn something I wish to tell her, then I realize my best friend is not there to share it. As I watch couples dance, visions of Dora flood my

mind. How she absolutely lit up on the dance floor and how she danced so gracefully. She would burst into laughter at my latest signature move. An ad for the Red Barn Theater and next year’s season tickets caught my attention. These often turned up gifted by Santa in our stocking. She would receive one to take her “best fella,” and I to take my “best gal.” That was always each other. Dora looked with puzzlement one Christmas when she received an old pie tin. It made sense the next morning when a can of cherry pie filling was in her stocking. My favorite! When driving past a hospital I thought of the promise I made to Dora as she lay in a hospital bed. I was to deliver her bicycle to a young lady that she had promised it to. Kindness and generosity flowed through her whole life as she helped a couple to pay rent so they were not evicted, purchased a white shirt for a man so he could serve at an event or donated a creation for a fundraiser. Great! Someone to attend church with after so many years of each of us attending alone. It is that remembrance and her being by my side that cause tears to fall at some point in every service. Sharing and reveling in God’s great love created an immovable closeness and an unbreakable bond. If any of the aforementioned seems familiar, you know that you are not alone. Know there is help and there are others who will identify with you. The answer is that you certainly are not crazy. You are simply grieving. Make some plans for the holidays to be around those you love and those who loved your lost loved one. Be open and share some sweet memories. That’s my plan! Merry Christmas!

Green holiday tips for the season

appy Holidays goes out to all faithful readers of the Earth Notes column, and for those visiting family and friends. ‘Tis the season to give, celebrate and renew. It may seem like a monumental task for one to do alone, but in reality, it really only takes a small, conscious commitment to protect the environment. Below are some simple ways you can make a difference this holiday season. • Bows, bags, fabrics, string, newspaper comics, magazines and decorative boxes can be used to package gifts. These items can also be reused every year. I also use old calendar pictures to wrap gifts in. • Wrapping paper can be recycled year after year, if you are careful when opening your gift; but if the paper is too ripped to save you can recycle it through your curbside hauler or one of the drop-off bins at the recycling site. • Tissue paper is also reusable and recyclable. • Try using a timer on your house and tree lights this Christmas to avoid keeping lights on all night. • This year, use washable plates, cups and silverware for parties and family gatherings instead of disposable products. • To avoid wasting food, cook only the amount of food necessary, or make up an extra plate for an elderly neighbor and bring it over as a surprise. • Lower your thermostat a bit when you are sleeping or at work and save energy. • Give compact fluorescent lights this year to those who may not be fully aware of the benefits, both environmentally and monetarily, these bulbs can bring. Remember, spent CFLs must be treated responsibly and taken to one of five recycling sites located in the region for safe disposal. You can save $200 a year by using rechargeable batteries instead of disposables in one CD player used two hours a day. Wow! • Use a real camera instead of disposable ones. If you take 24 pictures each month you will save $144 each year. Better yet, think about getting a digital camera and stop paying for pictures that didn’t turn out well. • Try using an electric razor or hand razor with replaceable blades instead of disposable razors. • Also, save to buy high-quality/long-life tires, they cost less per mile traveled and provide for better gas mileage. • To reduce all those disposable cups, use a washable commuter mug for your morning coffee and eliminate a foam or plastic cup every day. That one should be a no-brainer. A great idea is to get rid of those disposable cups in offices altogether, this forces folks to use ceramic coffee cups. • Why not bring your own bags to the grocery store, either cloth or your old used paper and plastic bags from a previous trip, many stores will credit your

bill for using your own bags. Also, when buying only a few items, don’t take a bag. You can recycle plastic film like bags and those used for food packaging at all recycling locations throughout the two-county region. • To preserve the life of your appliances, computers, tools and cars, keep them clean and serviced. That way they will enjoy an even longer life before you will have to replace them. • Consider sharing equipment, or renting items from rental stores that may be used infrequently — such as hedge clippers, pruners, weed whips or chain saws. Did you know that a family of four can save $3,000 a year simply by buying products in the largest size they can use and by buying long-lasting reusable items? Think about the effect of your purchases on the environment when you shop. Items with excess packaging and products that need to be discarded after only a few uses cost more money, use up valuable resources and create more waste. This is all just stuff you don’t really need. Some good examples of this are individually packaged servings of applesauce, string cheese and chips. It is also important to familiarize yourself with what types of containers and items can be recycled or reused in your local recycling program, or at home. Once you know what you can recycle, look for products that come in the containers that you know you will be able to recycle when the products are all used up. After all, you’re buying the packaging too. Please remember to break down and recycle all those cardboard boxes that will pile up over the holidays. Sarona resident named winner of Goellner-Godwin Professional Development Award RICE LAKE — UW-Barron County Foundation recently announced Lee Friederich, Sarona, as the winner of the first Goellner-Godwin Professional Development Award. Friederich has been accepted to take part in an advanced practitioner Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Certificate program from TESOL International, the major professional organization in this field. Friederich, a UWBC senior lecturer of English who teaches immigrant and international students, is an International Programs coordinator and advises the One World International Club at UW-Barron County. The advanced practitioner certificate from TESOL International will also allow her to collaborate more effectively with colleagues both on campus and throughout the UW Colleges’ northern region. After earning this certification, Friederich hopes to be able to offer professional development opportunities to others who might need further training as well. The Goellner-Godwin Professional Development Award was endowed and established by Paul Goellner and Bette Colville, Spooner, as a tribute to Paul’s parents, Karl E. and Ruth E. (nee Godwin) Goellner, who believed

Spooner holiday ski race planned SPOONER — The Spooner Nordic Ski Team will hold the Spooner Holiday Ski Race on Tuesday, Dec. 27. The race begins at 11 a.m. at the high school. The boys will lead out a 6.5-kilometer race on the city park trails. The high school girls will follow. The middle school combined girls and boys race will then follow the high school skiers. Participating teams include Drummond, Hayward, Chippewa Valley, Iola and Spooner There will also be a 1K kids ski race following the middle school race. The race is free and open to any children who would like to participate. The race will be rescheduled if there is a lack of snow. There will be a $5 chili dinner and awards in the commons following the race. The public is invited. The Spooner team will be traveling to Hayward to participate in the Hayward Christmas Classic on Monday, Dec. 26. — from SNST

nd while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. She gave birth to her first child, a son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them. That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior – yes, the Messiah, the Lord – has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! Suzanne Johnson and decorated. They have mailed out letters and cards to family and friends and perhaps to a few acquaintances. They have planned, shopped and prepared a lovely meal. And then there are some that see the date on the calendar, show up at the table, open presents and sit back and think, “Wow! This all happened by magic!” At this point, I can envision a frazzled wife looking at her husband and rolling her eyes. This column includes a photo of the Christmas gift I received from my friend, Val. Knowing that I enjoy knitting, she cleverly wrapped my gift by strategically placing items in layers of yarn. Actually using three skeins of yarn to complete her wrapping. You may wonder what Val gifted me with. I don’t know yet, as I am having fun showing my uniquely wrapped gift that I have yet to open.

But there are lots of gifts that don’t look anything like that. A gift could be a smile to a stranger on the street, Or maybe stop and chat a bit with your neighbor when you meet. We love to get that card from our friends just down the way, It reads just thinking ‘bout you, that’s all it has to say. A gift could be a helping hand to a child at work or play, The smile that you get in return will last you all the day. Or maybe just a phone call to someone who’s alone, It’s awful nice to hear a voice, if only on the phone. Maybe just go and help your neighbor for a day, It makes you feel so good inside, and never mention pay. So next time that we give a gift, we might get a surprise, We might get way more back than what we realize. — RAM Merry Christmas!

Sound of music

n my hometown in Illinois, which had begun as a coal mining town, there were people of different nationalities from Europe who came to work in the mines. There were Austrians, Germans, Italians, Poles, Lithuanians, English and Irish. These families with children in school learned to speak English, and tried to be Americans in every way. But they celebrated their holiday season in the traditions from the old country. My father was Irish and grew up the last child of the family without many traditions except going to church on Christmas and having a nice dinner. My mother grew up with nearly all the wonderful traditions celebrated by her Austrian parents. She handed them down to her children. Ours was a Christmas resplendent with greenery and glowing candles and music. We enjoyed the cookies and decorations. In 1948, in early December, I was 16, and I went along with my mother and aunts and an uncle to Peoria, about 50 miles from home, for a concert. The Trapp Family Singers were performing at the Elks Hall there. Mother had all Maria Trapp’s records. They sang their wonderful music in chorus. It was like we were hearing the angels sing. There were only two boys, one tall and the other a small boy, and Father Wasner, the priest who directed their musical numbers. Georg von Trapp had passed away the year before. Maria introduced the songs and added her funny little jokes that kept the audience happy. She explained that the shoe-buckler folk dance they were going to perform needed more men, but a couple of the girls would be men for this dance. Everyone laughed and applauded as they danced, clomping on that old wooden floor and slapping their shoes. The girls in their Austrian costumes showed a bit of petticoat and bowed like the men. Maria and the family yodeled and sang the old melodies sung in the villages and farms and in the mountains. She said they tried with their music to keep alive the old songs that were being lost because of the trend toward modern music. They sang classical music of Brahms and Mozart. It was wonderful. They also sang “Pistol Packin’ Mama” and “Old Black Joe.” And the beautiful “Edelweiss” about the little white alpine flower that will always be happy to meet you, and will bless your homeland forever. Touching. After an intermission, they returned and the stage was dim, with candlelight. The family sat at a big table and sang their Christmas carols and songs, as Maria said, like they did at home in Austria, or on the road as a singing family, or at their home in Stowe, Vt. There was an Advent wreath with the five candles, the scent of the burning wax, the Christmas tree holding candles, and the boy who carried in his own little chair

It was so much like our own Christmas when my brothers and sisters gathered around the piano and sang the Christmas carols on the Sunday evenings of Advent. I could almost smell the Lebkuchen and Pfeffernusse, those cookies Mother always made, and the gingerbread boys. They ended the show with “Silent Night.” There was thundering applause. Yesterday I picked up the book “Maria,” written by Maria in 1972. She had already written four other books. I came across a mention of having been performing a concert in Peoria, Ill., where after the performance she had to go to the St. Francis Hospital suffering from a kidney infection and the family had to leave her and go on to the next performance without her. That poor woman who danced and sang and gave us that wonderful concert was certainly a trooper. I am thankful that the show went on. If you have seen the movie “The Sound of Music,” or the stage play, or read Maria’s books, or visited their lodge or music camp in Vermont, you have heard the story of this amazing family. Maria had entered Nonnberg Abbey at 18 to be a nun, because she was a bit wild and thought she needed the discipline. Maria said she was quite like they portrayed her in the film, with the song, “What are we going to do about Maria?” She was teaching a class of children and suddenly she had a message from the mother superior saying she was to come to her office immediately. Rather frightened, she found there was a need for a nun to tutor a child in a family of seven children whose mother had died, and she could have that job for nine months. In a matter of moments, she agreed, and without saying goodbye to the postulants or her class, she was on the way to the train station. She reported to the huge mansion in Salzburg, the home of Georg von Trapp, the baron, who was an Austrian war hero and was to be addressed as “Captain.” The man who answered the door was a butler, who she called Captain. He introduced her to the children. The real captain was seldom at home. She soon fell

in love with the children. She didn’t like the captain. There were two boys, Rupert and Werner, and five girls, Johanna, Maria, who was to be tutored, Hedwig, Agathe, and the youngest, 3-year-old Martha. Maria assumed the teaching of all the children. They were very good with music. They sang together for some events, and came to the attention of an opera singer. She encouraged them to enter contests. The archbishop sent Father Wasner to stay with them and become their music director. He was very pleasant but strict about the music. Their music improved. The baron fell in love with Maria and asked her to marry him. She ran off and returned to the abbey and the mother superior told her it was God’s will. She went back and they were married. She did it for the children, but after some time she came to love this man, 25 years older than her, and they loved each other dearly and she was accepted by the children. He sang with the family and they took prizes and were asked to go to perform in Italy. In 1938, Hitler took over the Austrian government. Georg didn’t want to go to war for Hitler or his party. Problems with the bank took all of his money. He was ordered to duty. He called the family together and asked them if they were willing to give up their home and all their worldly possessions or their faith and honor. They all agreed and decided to run off. But how? They slipped out for the tour to Italy, and did not come back. They could make a living singing as long as the singing dates kept coming. They came to America and toured as a singing family, bought land in Stowe, and became Americans. Their former estate was used by Himmler as his residence. They toured for 20 years. Maria wrote her first book, and sold it for $9,000 and lost the rights to it. Many fortunes were made on the play and movie and they never received any other compensation. They earned their living on tour and had a music camp in the summer where people came to learn to sing in Stowe. There were mountains like those in Austria. They had a ski resort and a gift store. The two boys were drafted into the Army. They all became citizens. Maria and Georg had three children, Rosmarie, Lorli and Johannes. Georg died in May of 1947, after they were married 20 years. Maria died in 1987. She was 82 years old. Rupert became a doctor, and Werner managed their business. They all married and had children. The child Maria was called to tutor was the last of the Trapp family of the baron and she died at 99 in Stowe, Feb. 22, 2014. The Trapp family singers toured and sang in Mexico and South America, Australia and Europe, and at the leper colony in Hawaii.

Washburn County hazard mitigation plan update adopted SHELL LAKE — Washburn County, like the rest of the state of Wisconsin, is vulnerable to a variety of disasters. Wisconsin has incurred disaster-related damages totaling $3 billion in the last three decades but future losses can be reduced through mitigation activities. A recent study by the Multihazard Mitigation Council shows that each dollar spent on mitigation saves society an average of $4. Since 1993, more than 400 disasters have occurred in the United States, affecting communities in all 50 states, costing the country over $500 million per week and killing over 24,000 people.

Mitigation actions reduce or eliminate the long-term risk to human life and property from hazards. These preventative actions can be as simple as elevating a furnace in a basement that sometimes has water on the floor. Mitigation can also have a comprehensive approach such as relocating buildings out of the floodplain or strengthening critical facilities to prevent wind damage and provide stronger shelter. In an effort to better prepare Washburn County to manage its vulnerability to disasters, Washburn County Emergency Management applied for, received, and

has completed a Pre-Disaster Mitigation update planning grant. This plan update serves as a road map that outlines potential cost-effective hazard mitigation activities, some of which might be available for future grant funding. The updated plan outlines the risks and vulnerabilities that the county faces from natural disaster and highlights mitigation strategies that might reduce future losses. The Washburn County Board of Supervisors as well as every city, village and town in the county, demonstrating the county’s commitment to reducing future disaster losses through future-oriented spending on mitigation

strategies, adopted the completed hazard mitigation plan update. The updated plan was distributed to all municipalities and can be viewed at the Washburn County Emergency Management webpage at co.washburn.wi.us/ departments/emergency-management or in person at the county clerk’s office, 10 Fourth Ave., Shell Lake. — from WCEM

Merry Christmas! The Barronett Lutheran Church kids Christmas program, “The Best Christmas Present Ever,” was great. The youngsters participating in the play were Kylie Hohweiler, Conner Schrankel, Kaytlynn Peer, Kaylee Peer, Tatum Schrankel, Jessica Schrankel, Caitlynn Yawn, Colt Miller and Jay Miller. Teacher Peg Thompson and the children had spent a lot of time rehearsing. All the kids did a very good job playing their roles, and Kirsten Hohweiler did a wonderful job reading the Christmas story. Sitting, relaxing and watching the kids perform was a great way to spend the evening. Christmas Eve candlelight service at Barronett Lutheran will be held this Thursday evening at 7 p.m. Please plan to join us. Pastor Todd will be reading the Christmas story and we will be singing the old familiar carols. Come and relax before you have to face the chaos of Christmas morning. Steve Hopkins called and asked me to let you know that Mitchell Zuckoffs new book, “Thirteen Hours in Benghazi,” is now available at the Cumberland library. Scott Wickland, who grew up right across the street from Richard and Marie Hill-

man’s farm, was one of the men on duty at that time. The incident took place in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11 and 12, 2012. Scott was a bodyguard for Ambassador Christopher Stevens. Ambassador Stevens was killed, and Scott was wounded trying to protect him. A movie is being made of the incident, and I think it will be out next month. If you would like to read the book, stop by the library and pick it up or, you can even order it online. Sounds like it would be one of those that, once you start it, you won’t be able to put it down until you’ve finished it. Merl and Shirley Overvig were in the area again on Friday. Shirley came up to help Judy Norton with some of the things Judy is learning about being the treasurer for Barronett Lutheran. I’m not sure if anyone told Judy when she agreed to take over those duties that you (almost) have to move out of town in order to have someone take over for you. I’m kind of kidding but, because we’re such a little church, we do tend to hold on to people who volunteer to take on duties. Anyway, after Shirley worked with Judy, she and Merl stopped by Ruth and Dick Grover’s home to visit with them. Then they stopped by to visit with Duane

Hank and Karen Mangelsen went to Siren on Monday night, Dec. 14, and attended the Siren Middle School/High School band and choir Christmas concert. Granddaughters Hannah Mangelsen, and Mandy and Patty Close were all performers in the program. Bob and Pam Bentz went to the Twin Cities on Tuesday, Dec. 15, and visited Bob’s sister, Cora. Donna and Gerry Hines called on Karen and Hank Mangelsen on Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday they visited Nina and Lawrence Hines. Karen and Hank Mangelsen attended the elementary Christmas program at Siren School on Thursday afternoon to watch granddaughter Grace Mangelsen sing with her fourth-grade classmates. The fifth-grade band played and the kindergarten through fifth grade each sang several songs. Ronda and Maynard Mangelsen went to the Shell Lake Clinic Christmas party Friday night at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Dunham. Hank and Karen Mangelsen took Grace Mangelsen to Grantsburg Continuing Care Center Friday evening where

Grace then stayed overnight with her grandparents. Saturday visitors of Karen and Hank Mangelsen were Melba Denotter, and Jake and Hannah Mangelsen. People visiting Maynard and Ronda Mangelsen Saturday were Desi and Aubrey Rosselli, Daisy Wohlford, and Hank and Karen Mangelsen. An ugly Christmas sweater contest was held after the service at Lakeview United Methodist Church Sunday morning. Winning first prize was Dan Makosky wearing a pink sweatshirt with snowmen on it. Second place went to Pastor Starr who wore a red vest decorated with reindeer and snowmen, and third prize was won by Dan Sutton in a red vest with jewels on it. Karen and Hank Mangelsen went to River Falls on Sunday to attend the Sunday school program of grandson Baxter Mangelsen. Then they came to Siren and visited Mandy, Patty, Dave and April Close. They helped Mandy celebrate her 16th birthday.

Duane, on the other hand, is probably getting pretty tired of black walnuts. He has been cracking a lot of them. He brought in two pint jars filled to the brim with nutmeats already. Oh, and speaking of Sharai, she can barely speak right now. She stopped by the house on Sunday afternoon and couldn’t talk above a croaky whisper. She said that Dick Grover told her that he likes her better this way. She will be working at the Red Brick this week, so stop by and engage her in conversation. It’s fun watching her struggle to get a word out. Actually, this is only funny because it’s temporary. She’ll be better soon and then I’m sure she will give me a piece of her mind for making fun of her. I guess that’s about all I know from Barronett this week. I hope you have a very merry Christmas. Academic news MENOMONIE — During the fall semester, University of Wisconsin - Stout students, through a class called Abuse and the Family, went to schools, jails and other facilities in west-central Wisconsin to raise awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault. Professor Susan Wolfgram from the human development and family studies department taught the class. Wolfgram’s students presented their message of domestic violence awareness and prevention at six sites during the fall semester. October was Domestic Violence Awareness Month. “Students are part of

All she wanted for her birthday was to be able to watch the Viking game and the Packer game with her family who are all Packer fans. Naturally she wanted to see the Vikings lose and the Packers win. Well, she got half of her birthday wish anyway. Lynn Thon, Duane and I went to Hudson to have breakfast with Sanara and her dad, Jerry, Sunday morning. She’s very excited to be finished with school, and was very happy to be home for a few days. Our family will all be traveling to Massachusetts in May when Sanara will participate in the graduation ceremony with the rest of her class. Sharai Hefty brought us some more black walnuts. December remains unseasonably mild. Sounds like it will be nice weather for Christmas. Gas prices continue to fall. It is under $2 per gallon in Shell Lake and Spooner. Mary Krantz’s girls, Vicki, Kathy, Brenda and Denise, took her to Perkin’s in Rice Lake and celebrated Denise’s birthday. They decorated their mom’s Christmas tree and her door as they have a door-decorating contest where she now lives at the Woodstone Senior Associated Living in Rice Lake. They will be getting together again this weekend to celebrate Christmas together with her there. Brenda Pederson spent some time in Fargo, N.C., with son Jerid and Rachel and five children and to meet her newest baby grandson, Levi. Carolyn and Hokey West sent the neatest Christmas cards this year. It’s pictures of their family every 10 years. Front says, “Same crew, same field, different year.” Years, ’65, ’75, ‘85, ‘95, ’05 and 2015. The setting is the same, by the fireplace and all are in the same positions with them and their five children: Brian, Laura, Paula, Denis and Gretchen, for the past 50 years. Tuesday found Diane at Shell Lake Schools and Thursday she went to Faith Lutheran Church for her great-grandson Charles Murray’s Christmas program. Charles is 4 years old and I’m sure it was very cute. Good news this day. Harold Stone has been home for about two weeks. He spent time in an Eau Claire nursing home. The training will begin Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, at no charge, and continues each Monday and Thursday evening through Jan. 28. Hospice volunteers are men and women of all ages and backgrounds who give a few hours a week to assist the terminally ill and their loved ones within the LMCH program. and Loretta went to Lakeview Medical Center and had the staples out. Afterward they enjoyed lunch at Culver’s. It was worth getting those staples out, wasn’t it, for the Culver’s treat, Loretta? Talking with Betty Meister, she says they have all their Christmas gifts bought. They buy for the grandchildren and give their kids special gifts from their hearts. Does anyone get the magazine Our Wisconsin? It is such a great magazine with such colorful pictures. I really enjoy it. The photography in it is outstanding. It reminds me of how Larry Samson takes such great pictures. You know back when I was growing up, we didn’t have electricity until I think 1949 and Christmas was coming. Well we put icicles on the tree and put the pretty bulbs on the trees and then we had candles that were like on a saucer. The candles were hooked to the saucer and we kids would attach them to the tree limbs. Then we kids got to light them. And behold, there was a fire in the house! We kids thought we had the world with the burning of the

It was nice getting out and kind of fun wheeling around in the electric shopping cart, seeing things at a child’s level. Wednesday, son-in-law John Marschall, took me to the Class of 1950 Christmas get-together with 17 attending. Nice to have Dale Larson make it, coming from Inver Grove Heights, Minn. He said it was sunny and mild when he left, then hit mist, windy, sleet and rain, then a snow mix here and colder in the 1-1/2-hour drive up. That’s winter in Wisconsin. Bonnie Helmer visited me Thursday and drove me to physical therapy. There are lots of cards arriving and also the tax greetings and at this writing only one week until Christmas. Lots of programs and Christmas get-togethers coming up fast. Call me with your holiday news. Put my sister, Nell Lee, on your prayer list. She had lost her voice and had surgery on her voice box last Monday

candles. They were so pretty and dainty. Along came electricity and that spoiled it all for us kids. It was onward to bubble lights. They too were fastened onto the tree limbs and they would light up and they would bubble. Oh, they were so pretty in all colors, especially the red ones. Then it went onto the normal bulbs and today we see all kinds of different bulbs. But you know what? I think those candles were the greatest. Back then we kids appreciated the little things and we, I guess, didn’t know any better. But as I think of Christmas, I think I remember Christmas as the happiest time for all of us. Scatter sunshine! Have a great week! Exchange students share their experiences and culture

Danielle Danford | Staff writer SHELL LAKE — Each year the Washburn County Register newspaper profiles the exchange students attending school in Shell Lake. This year the school has welcomed six foreign exchange students hailing from France, Germany, Kazakhstan, Spain and Sweden. This week the remaining three students will share information about themselves, how they celebrate the holidays and about his or her experience in the United States. ••• Sarah Greife is 17 and from Narbromme, France. The city of Narbromme is located in the south of France just nine miles from the Mediterranean Sea. Greife’s host family is Shane and Melissa Williams. The following is in Greife’s own words. “I really like going to high school in America, it’s different, like school spirit and team sports. I like the atmosphere and all the different kinds of activities that we have the possibility to do. People are very welcoming and you feel integrated very quickly. “I like history at school but I don’t excel in it. “My favorite activity is dancing. I dance in a club in France. I like hanging out with my friends and doing funny stuff. I like being spontaneous. I really like listening to good music especially in the car, loud. In summer I love going to the beach with my friends and surfing. “For Christmas we meet with family. My family lives in Paris so I go with my family in Paris. We eat turkey foie gras, which is very tasty, and all kinds of food that you eat too in America. On the first Sunday of December we celebrate the first Advent. “We have an Advent wreath with pine tree branches, red ribbons and pinecones with four big candles. We light the first candle the first Sunday of Advent. Then, until Christmas, every Sunday we light another candle. So for Christmas all the candles are lit. We have an Advent calendar, too. Every day from the first December to Christmas we open a box with the date from that day and candies are in the boxes. “I am looking forward to Thanksgiving, we don’t have it in Europe, and prom, we don’t have that either. “As an exchange student I hope I am learning another culture, learning to speak English fluently and meet new people. the Russian Federation. The country of Kazakhstan is the ninth largest country in the world. Koxegenov’s host family is Peter and Danette Hopke. The following is in Koxegenov’s own words. “Firstly, just living in a small town such as Shell Lake is an experience to me. My hometown in Kazakhstan has a population of 500,000 people but I like to live here in Shell Lake more. It’s relatively quiet and I’m enjoying the natural beauty of this place. “I think my favorite subject is psychology. I love the importance it has on everyday life and its relevance. In addition I just like American education and school system, it offers a rich field of choices and you’re free to choose whatever you want to study. “There are a lot of sports out here in American schools and it’s great, because I am a big fan of sports. I did cross country as a fall sport and I met a lot of wonderful people. When I only came I’ve tried to play American football, it was a huge experience. Now I’m doing one of the toughest and most exhausting sports — wrestling. It is unlike any other sport and I like it so much. “We don’t have Christmas but our celebration of New Year is pretty similar to it. “New Year is all about family and the coming new year. We have a Christmas tree, presents and all that stuff. The main celebration happens on the night of Dec. 31 to Jan. 1. We watch our president talk about our country’s plans for the coming year and then wait for midnight when we go outside and watch incredible firework shows. “As an exchange student I want to share my country’s culture and traditions and at the same time learn about American culture. I like being here and representing Kazakhstan. I am looking forward to meeting a lot of new people and discovering new things about American life. “Being a foreign exchange student is interesting. Sometimes it might be hard because it forces you to adapt to things that are unfamiliar and unusual to From you but it is always a great experience. my first football game, my first Thanksgiving and Black Friday. “I like art and metals class where I can create things with my hands. But I’m also good in the natural studies field like biology, chemistry and psychology. I also really like the programming class where I’ve learned to make a ball bounce up and down on my screen from only writing code. So cool. “In Sweden I do Thai boxing and that’s pretty much the only sport I like so I’m not doing any sports here. I love video games, especially fantasy ones. Dragon Age Inquisition is my favorite. I like music and going to festivals. Bluegrass and Celtic music are some things I like. Radiohead is my favorite band and I also like Coldplay and many more. “In Sweden we celebrate Christmas on the 24th. We have a Julbord or a Christmas table, which it would translate to, where we have traditional Swedish Christmas food such as prinskorv, which are small sausages, janssons freslelse, a potato dish, meatballs, Christmas ham with mustard and much more. Then we watch a special Christmas episode of different Disney movies called ‘Kalle Ankas Jul,’ us Swedes watch this every single year. Then it’s time for gifts that are lying under the tree or Santa comes with a sack of gifts, depending on the family. Under the tree we have a Christmas elk made of straw. We open everything and then sit and eat chocolate or saffron buns or gingerbread cookies the rest of the night. “My family Christmas is one of my sisters and I go to our summer house and celebrate. We cut down our own tree and decorate it the day before Christmas. Then

a couple of days after the real Christmas I celebrate with my mom’s part of the family; me, two of my sisters and my mom’s husband. We open gifts and eat gingerbread. “I’m really looking forward to going to California in February. Also I really want to go skiing, which we are going to do in January. I’m in the school play so I’m looking forward to working more with that this spring and of course I’m looking forward to Christmas. “As a foreign exchange student I hope to gain more experience about the world. When living in the same place your entire life you create an image of how the world around you works so it’s interesting to see how different it can be if you take a plane somewhere else. “Being an exchange student is an amazing cultural experience which is impossible to get without living with a family from a different culture. I also hope to grow as an individual. Normally you’re around people you know and who know you, but when going alone to a different country you have to make new friends and connections. I also think that I’ve learned to appreciate what I have and the people I love more than before. When being so far away from everyone you stop taking them for granted which is easily done when you’re always spending time with them. “So by being an exchange student I’ve not only got to learn, see and get to know another society and country, but it also feels like I’ve gotten closer to my home country and my friends and family at home. It’s really an amazing but hard experience.”
