Vacant seat on Spooner School Board to be determined at January special board meeting Danielle Danford| Staff writer SPOONER — The Spooner School Board discussed, voted on and ultimately tabled the decision of who will take the vacant seat during the board’s regular monthly meeting on Monday, Dec. 21. Six people applied to be considered a candidate to fill the vacant position. Those people are James Dienstl, Myles Macone, Nathaniel Melton, Chad Gibson, William Skidmore and Wayne Poteet. However, Poteet withdrew his candidacy prior to Monday night’s board meeting. Prior to entering discussion on the candidates, board member Robert Hoellen stated that the ultimate selection of one candidate isn’t a bad reflection on the other four.
“You are all worthy and thank you for signing up for this, uh, wonderful, job,” said Hoellen, apparently making a joke, which received some chuckles from the people watching the meeting unfold. Since all five of the interested candidates were present at the board meeting, John Hedlund, board chair, requested each address the board on why they wanted to be on the board. After Dienstl, Macone, Melton, Gibson and Skidmore each said their piece, Hedlund pointed out that board member Clay Halverson was absent from the meeting. He added that the board had the option to postpone the election to a special board meeting in January, however, it wasn’t until after Hoellen nominated Skidmore
that Christina Martin, board member, stated she wasn’t ready to make a decision. “If we could hold a special meeting that would be great and that would give the community time to reach out to board members with their thoughts,” said Martin. Kyle Pierce, board member, stated Jan. 11 was a tentative date for that special meeting to take place, but Hoellen stated that if they got a vote in that night, the sooner the position would be filled. At that time Pierce nominated Macone and Martin followed up by nominating Dienstl. It was determined that the election would be done in the way board officers are elected, where more than one nomina-
tion can be open at a time and each board member gets one vote for a nominated candidate. Votes were cast by a show of hands for the nominated candidate of their choice. After votes were cast the results were that Skidmore received one vote from Hoellen, Dienstl received one vote from Martin and Macone received three votes from Hedlund, Pierce and Goellner. While Macone received the majority vote it was not enough to elect him to the vacant position. The board agreed to table the vote until a special meeting could take place in January.
DMV helps individuals comply with new law Seller Notify online tool records private-vehicle sales
STATEWIDE - As of Jan. 1, a new Wisconsin state law, docs.legis.wisconsin. gov/statutes/statutes/342/III/41, requires an individual selling a privately owned motor vehicle to another private party to report that sale to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation within 30
days of the sale. To help state residents, WisDOT has developed an online service where sellers can conveniently submit their notice of sale electronically. Seller Notify is available at wisconsindmv.gov/SellerNotify. “We understand this is a new process for private-to-private sellers,” said Mitchell Warren, director of vehicle services. “Our goal is to make this as easy as possible for them to comply with the new law.” This requirement does not apply to businesses buying or selling vehicles or motor vehicle dealers, Warren said.
Private motor vehicle sellers can report the sale in three steps through Seller Notify. This online tool also enables the seller to print a receipt, email a copy or save the recorded information for their records. Sellers can also report the sale by completing and submitting a WisDMV form, MV 2870, by mail or at a local DMV Service Center. The Seller Notify system was designed to be compatible with mobile devices and desktop computers. Sellers can use their preferred platform, including phones and tablets, to submit sale data directly to Wis-
DOT in real time. Only the website with .gov is the official state DMV website. Others with .org and .com are not official and may have extra charges for forms or list information that is outdated or incorrect. In addition to the expanding services on its website, WisDOT connects with customers on Facebook, facebook.com/WisDOT, and Twitter @WisconsinDOT, twitter.com/ WisconsinDOT. — from WisDOT
Public meeting will address current status of Totogatic State Wildlife Area flowage and dam HAYWARD - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will host a public meeting Wednesday, Jan. 13, to share the current status of the flowage and dam at the Totogatic State Wildlife Area near Wozny Road. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the Hayward High School auditorium, 10320 N. Greenwood Lane, Hayward. As a result of dam safety concerns, the flowage has been drawn down approximately 2 feet to alleviate pressure on the dam. Based on the dam’s current condition, it must be removed and reconstructed or abandoned. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is currently
in the planning process of rerouting Wozny Road, which travels over the dam. A new route to the north would create a new bridge downstream. Background information regarding the Totogatic State Wildlife Area and its flowage can be found on the DNR website. Additional public meetings and opportunities in 2016 will gather additional public input. The flowage on Totogatic State Wildlife Area is an impoundment of the Totogatic River, which is directly downstream of the Nelson Lake dam and overlaps Sawyer and Washburn counties. Prior to drawdown, the impoundment was held at a

water level that contained approximately 200 acres of open water. The wildlife property provides wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities, including hunting, fishing and trapping. The property lies between other statemanaged properties that adjoin the Totogatic River, including the Totogatic Lake Wildlife Area upstream and Totogatic Wild River properties downstream. The department will share additional information at the public meeting regarding the management history of the flowage, current status of the dam and potential resource impacts under different alternatives.

SAYHA’s plan for indoor rink/multiuse building moves forward, on questions impact raised Danielle Danford | Staff writer SPOONER —”What I mean by multiuse is it is just 240-foot-by-120-foot building, one roof, one piece of concrete,” said Tim Salo, president of the Spooner Area Youth Hockey Association. Salo came before the Spooner School Board at its regular monthly meeting on Monday, Dec. 21, to officially request some sort of use agreement between the school district and SAYHA for the use of school district land to construct that building. The kids of SAYHA have been without an indoor rink since the last time the Spooner Civic Center, or Ice House, closed, but that didn’t dampen their spirits. Since then the organization began looking into the possibility of building a multiuse facility. SAYHA envisions the building’s uses extending beyond hockey for batting practice, an indoor area for golfers to practice their swings, or flea markets. After SAYHA started their plan they understood acquiring property could be the biggest hurdle to making the building a reality. “So we approached the school board a couple different times with information that we had, just to keep them up to date, and they were always supportive and positive,” said Salo. But the organization always seemed to be missing a piece. By Monday night’s meeting SAYHA felt they had the proper documentation for the board to move forward. “We finally got a packet together with estimates, letters of recommendation, things like that,” said Salo. After giving a presentation on their plan to the school board’s buildings and grounds committee, the committee pushed their plan on

The piece of land in question is located at the east entrance to the Spooner High School parking lot with frontage on CTH A and is just under three acres in size. Salo explained that of the locations the organization looked at, this one already has sewer, water and electric on-site, not to mention an existing parking lot. “It would cost us a quarter of a million dollars to get the utilities to the other location,” said Salo, adding that SAYHA has the support of the Spooner City Council.
“They are willing to do whatever they can to help this work.” The district has sought the opinion of an attorney on entering into any agreement regarding SAYHA’s request. Some of the points identified from the attorney that should be considered include the sale of alcohol, the district’s potential liability, handicap parking and utility costs. “From the attorney’s perspective there is a standardized leasing process we can go through and engage in,” said Michelle Schwab, superintendent. The attorney’s
least-recommended option was for the district to sell the property to the city and have SAYHA lease it from the city. Schwab suggested the board also consider the district’s girl hockey players that participate in a co-op with Hayward and how the construction of the indoor rink could impact that agreement. “Would we then host our own hockey group here? … Could we grow enough girls to get our own girls team or could we co-op with Shell Lake like we do for soccer?” asked Schwab. She also pointed out the potential impact on the boys hockey Iceman model. “Could we get enough 9-12 student athletes to do maybe a Shell Lake, Webster, Spooner, Minong co-op team?” asked Schwab. Board member Kyle Pierce stated that not without additional thought would he be 100 percent in favor of the plan, “but what I can say is I am in favor of having a hockey program here.” Robert Hoellen followed Pierce’s statement by saying he was very supportive of the concept but working out the details will be important. “As you know we don’t have any extra money right now for what we do have. We can pay with property but not money,” said Hoellen. It was determined by a unanimous voice vote that the board would schedule future meetings to consider SAYHA’s request.

Town of Minong, village of Birchwood caucuses soon Residents to nominate candidates for April election
Gregg Westigard | Staff writer WASHBURN COUNTY — Residents in the Town of Minong and the village of Birchwood will soon gather at nominating caucuses to select candidates for the April 5, 2016, election. The Birchwood Village caucus is Tuesday, Jan. 5. The Minong town caucus is Monday, Jan. 11. Minong is the only town in Washburn County with a five-member board and annual town elections. In Minong, the seats of town Supervisors Linda Featherly and James Smith will
be up in 2016. Residents at the caucus will be able to nominate up to four candidates for the two seats. The winners of the April election will join the three continuing board members elected in the spring of 2015, town Chair Harold “Smokey” Smith and supervisors Chuck Warner and Roger Wojt. The Birchwood Village caucus will nominates two trustee candidates for the five-member village board. The seats now held by Nancy Seffinga and Linda Zillmer are up in 2016. The continuing board members elected in April 2015 are village president Virginia Hurchman and Trustees Rocky VanGilder and Stacie Small. While most villages have seven-person councils, Birchwood has chosen to have a
five-person council. All village residents of voting age can take part in the caucus, which will nominate up to two candidates for each seat. Nominated residents don’t need to be at the caucus but if a person nominated is not present and declines the nomination, that spot stays blank on the ballot.
The village of Minong and the cities of Spooner and Shell Lake use nominating papers to place candidates on the ballot. Those papers are being circulated now with a deadline of Jan. 5 for getting on the ballot.

Science Olympiad members make presentation at school board meeting Larry Samson | Staff writer SHELL LAKE — The regular monthly meeting of the Shell Lake School Board was held Monday, Dec. 21, after the annual school social for school staff, administrators and school board members. It was an opportunity for staff to talk to board members in a relaxed atmosphere. Daniel Parish and Keagan Blazer, two members from the Science Olympiad team, presented a short update on the Science Olympiad competition at the Boyceville High School earlier in the month. The Boyceville Tournament is the largest in the nation. Shell Lake place eighth in the small school division. Parish and Blazer demonstrated an electric car that they had built for the tournament. It placed fifth overall and third in the small school division out of 77 cars. They explained that Shell Lake has 65 members in the program, three teams of 15 members, which is the maximum allowed. Blazer also reported on behalf of the student council. The council raised $290 to sponsor a family for Christmas. The members shopped from a list that the single-

She reported that the council was sponsoring a winter homecoming on Friday, Feb. 8. Instead of a dance, they are looking at a ski and tubing trip to one of the ski lodges in the area. The school board reviewed the 2015 audit report and approved it on a voice vote. The school district is in good shape after paying down the fund balance so it would more in line with the state recommendations. Athletic director Jim Campbell was on the agenda to discuss the proposed Lakeland Conference realignment for the 2017 football season. Campbell, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, was not able to attend so after a short discussion, the matter was postponed to the next meeting. The Lakeland Conference has two 11-man football conferences. The North Conference has the largest five schools and the South Conference has four of the smallest schools. Eight-man football and co-ops between schools have changed the makeup of the conference that once had three smaller conferences, Lakeland East, Lakeland West and Lakeland South. The conference goes from as far south as Lake Pepin to as far north as Bayfield and Washburn. Where does Shell Lake, with its less-than-190-student enrollment and weak football program, fit in? This will be discussed at the Monday, Jan. 18, meeting. The school board also voted to send out a survey to district teachers as they begin to formulate a new teacher compensation system. Superior mayor stands by remarks about Obama, citing First Amendment rights Danielle Kaeding | WPR News SUPERIOR - Superior’s mayor is not backing away from controversial comments he made about President Barack Obama and the first lady on his personal Facebook page last week, even as a number of groups are planning protests and a city councilor moves to censure the city leader. Under a Facebook photo of Michelle Obama, Superior Mayor Bruce Hagen wrote that she and the president have “destroyed the fabric of democracy,” and described the president as a “Muslim.” Amid the subsequent public outcry, Hagen said he wouldn’t
resign, citing his right to free speech. Twin Ports human rights activist Kym Young said she’s disappointed with the mayor. She said that groups were planning to shut down city offices Monday, Dec. 28, and boycott city events. “The people of this community have a voice too, that this was not acceptable,” she said. Young said the mayor’s comments are damaging. “Has he involved us now to the point where we will be seeing an escalated amount of violence and Islamophobia in this community?” she said.
Washburn County Area Humane Society I think we just might have the most perfect cat, I usually don’t like to say things such as that. But High life, yes, High life is super laid --back, I would say he’s fine as a new Cadillac. He’s friendly, he’s neutered, he likes everyone, Like when he meets new cats he won’t even run. He likes your attention but won’t drive you nuts, High life will even hang out with your mutts. His little meow, it’s as sweet as can be, But don’t call him “lightweight” he’s a solid 12.3 pounds. Besides all of that he’s quite handsome as well, Now it wouldn’t be surprising if High life could spell. OK, yes that’s silly, but you get my point, You still need to come meet the coolest cat in the joint.

Dogs for adoption: 2-year-old large tan/white pit bull; 8-week-old female German shepherd mix pup; 5-year-old spayed yellow Lab mix; 2-year-old male shepherd/Akita mix and a neutered 4-1/2-year-old brindle pit bull/retriever mix. Hagen released a statement Wednesday, Dec. 23, saying he is not a racist and offered no apology. He wrote: “My choice of words in responding to, what I believe to be insulting to me, may not have been versed well or to the liking of some. However, I, like any other citizen or public official, have the unalienable right to speak and represent my beliefs through the First Amendment.” He added that he’s willing to repair any damages “directly and openly.” Said Young in response to the mayor’s statement: “He might think he’s done talking about it … but we will be seeking a redress for his actions.” A press conference was planned by groups like the Superior African Heritage Community and Justice City Coalition at Superior’s government center Monday morning, Dec. 28. Nick Alexander, Superior’s police chief, issued a press release about Monday’s gathering, noting that obstructing any entries or exits to the government center is against the law. “City employees should have the peace of

mind that they can come and go from work and be safe,” he wrote. Alexander said that he was reaching out to organizers of the shutdown to avoid “unnecessary conflict.” Meanwhile, councilor Graham Garfield said he planned to put a motion before the city council to censure Mayor Hagen. “A motion to censure would be very appropriate, whereby we formally condemn his actions and put it on the record that he behaved inappropriately as a mayor,” said Garfield. Garfield said he feels the mayor will be forced to resign and possibly face a recall election next spring. “Due to the fact that he didn’t choose to apologize and that he kind of tried to take this route that it was his right to make these comments, I feel that there really is no course for him but to resign or step down at this point,” said Garfield. The councilor said it’s likely an emergency city council meeting will be called after the holidays.

Some feedback from the past year This week’s Register is featuring a Year in Review of the first six months of 2015. Next week’s edition Beyond the will continue with the final six months of highlights of 2015 for the Shell Lake community. office door This week’s Beyond the Office Door is sort of a year in review, as I will share some of the feedback I have received over the past year in regard to what was shared in this column. I appreciate those that take the time to give feedback on what they read in the Register. Some of the information I am going to share here has come from those that have called, emailed, or stopped in to the newspaper office to give comments on Beyond the Office Door. After I wrote about the rubbery-plastic dog I received for my first Christmas in 1960, Karen stopped in to show me her toy cat that was from the same era. My little dog, with chew marks on his ear and tail, was mostly white with brown accents. Karen’s cat was white and gray. Although the two toys were the same size, texture and face, Karen’s cat did not have chewing marks left behind by a teething toddler. When I asked the question, “Goats, are they the new monkey?” Becky emailed me telling that the column had reminded her of when her children were growing up and they drank goats’ milk. Her son wouldn’t drink formula and on the advice of her doctor she tried 1-percent, 2-percent, and then whole milk. It wasn’t until she tried goats’ milk that her son would drink milk. Archie stopped in one day with a metal commemorative 50th anniversary sign for me after he read about my fascination with the Mustang cars. Naturally I received a lot of feedback when I wrote about saving Mrs. Beasley, who was destined for the garbage truck. “Coffee with doughnuts is the best!” is what an

email stated after I wrote about National Donut Day. In August I shared that my great-aunt who is my godmother posed for a Life magazine photographer while she demonstrated the executive yo-yo for her employer, Duncan Yo-Yo. Darlene shared with me how she at one time also worked for Duncan Yo-Yo. After reading that column I was challenged by a reader. He wrote, “I want to see Suzanne waterskiing on one or two skis just holding a yo-yo! That would out do Pat. I could have said Milt, but I have to be somewhat realistic. You and Konnie, both skiing, would really sell papers!” Then after reading the column about Konnie and I flipping the paddleboat over backwards, the same avid reader wrote, “Please delete the recommendation that you and Konnie have a picture taken while waterskiing! In fact, stay off the water unless accompanied by your husbands! I was breathing deeply after reading Beyond the Office Door.” Concerning the same column about the paddleboat experience, Lowell wrote, “You and Konnie had quite an adventure. Glad we can laugh about it. My muscles ached just thinking about getting free from the paddleboat and having to climb onto the pontoon. Carol and I have decided that we have already experienced our last paddleboat ride.
A 50 Years of the Mustang commemorative sign is the background for a Mustang model. — Photo by Suzanne Johnson I think waterskiing would be more fun, but it’s been over 20 years since I’ve done that.” I have been asked where I get my ideas for writing a column. It’s just my life experiences. I hope that what I have written will take the reader back to remembering some of his or her own life experiences as well. There are times I’ve considered trying something new just to have something to write about. Then again, if I write about things that may cause a reader to have an abnormal breathing rate, or to be feeling the pain of aching muscles, I may have to reconsider. Here’s to 2016, may I find things to write about to entertain you and to help you relive memories of your life, too.
Saying goodbye old and hello new year There’s a certain kind of sadness that tugs at our hearts when we have to bid goodbye to the year that is passing, never to return. It is like losing an old friend. We say so long to the old bewhiskered grim reaper with his scythe as he lumbers on into the mists of time. Sometimes you cannot find the words to give the old fellow a proper send-off. Famous last lines from old movies sometimes say it best. At the end of the movie “The Greatest Show on Earth,” Edmond O’Brien proclaims, “That’s all, ladies and gentlemen, that’s all. Come again to the greatest show on earth. Bring the children. Bring the old folks. You can shake the sawdust off your feet but you can’t shake it out of your heart. Come again, folks. The greatest show on earth. Come again!” To inspire us, we can find energy for the new year. William Shatner declared in “Star Trek II, The wrath of Khan: “Space; the final frontier. These are the continuing voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Her ongoing mission to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.” Martin Landau summed it up pretty well. In the movie “Crimes and Misdemeanors,” he stated, “Human happiness does not seem to have been included in the design of creation. It is only we, with our capacity to love, that give meaning to the indifferent universe. And yet most human beings seem to have the ability to keep trying and even to find joy from simple things, like their family, their work, and from the hope that future gen-
Old wife’s tales Mary B. Olsen erations might understand more.” I like the lines of Woody Allen talking about his childhood in “Radio Days.” “I never forgot that New Year’s Eve when Aunt Bea awakened me to watch 1944 come in. And I’ve never forgotten any of those people, or any of the voices we used to hear on the radio. Although the truth is, with the passing of each New Year’s Eve, those voices do seem to grow dimmer and dimmer.’” Maybe some people are more like me, thinking back to other beginnings when they were very young. Sometimes I was allowed to stay up until midnight. I would doze off, and then my parents would call out, “Happy New Year!” I might hear someone out there in the dark shooting a gun. A car horn might toot and honk a little and that would be the end of the year and the new year starting.
In other years when we had parties with everyone gathered at Mother and Dad’s house it seemed like the young husbands were off somewhere on an errand at the moment of importance and we young wives would welcome them back scolding them, but giving New Year’s kisses. Everyone would be hugging the children and each other and wishing our loved ones a Happy New Year. Remember the scene in the movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life” where the family and all their friends gathered and they are all happy to find the character played by James Stewart safe and sound? Whenever I watch the movie I get all teary during that great happy scene. Then there is the ringing of the bell on the Christmas tree, “Attaboy, Clarence.” The angel who helped him in his darkest hour has graduated to Angel First Class. No one knows what the new year will bring. As Tom Hanks said in “Forrest Gump, “My mama always said, lifeis like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” That goes for all of us. Like the song sung as the new year commences, “Should old acquaintance be forgot in days of auld lang syne”... forgive and forget and begin with a clear conscience. It’s a good Scottish song. May many a friendship deepen and add joy to the days ahead in this coming new year.

St. Francis students perform Christmas concert
The St. Francis fourth-grade junior band played several songs during their Christmas concert held Friday, Dec. 18. The advantage of a small school is the individual lessons that the students receive. Music is a very large part of the education program at St. Francis. Shown (L to R): Deagan Cleveland, Zachary Glessing, Benjamin Reedy and Severin Undem.
Photos by Larry Samson Taylor Horrell and Elizabeth Haines were the narrators in the musical. “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.”
Father Ed Anderson starts the program out with a prayer. Father Ed stressed the fact that there is only one letter difference in our family and your family. The St. Francis Middle School choir teamed up with the third-grade recorder class for several songs. The music program starts in third grade with students learning their notes with the recorder.
Fifth-grader Henry Schmitz is playing the trumpet in the concert band.
The theme of this year’s Christmas pageant was the Littlest Angel Choir. Molly Snider and Macey Coblentz are singing in the angel choir.

In the first game against Tomah the NW Icemen JV lost a close game 5-4. The evenly matched teams played a great JV battle that included hard work and scoring from both teams. Their coach said, “It was good to see the offense out of the Icemen but we need to clean up the positional play in our own defensive zone. It was a good effort, we just need to tighten up between the pipes and play smarter at the blue lines with the puck.” The varsity played at 7 p.m. and came
out victorious with a 3-2 victory. The Icemen put triple the shots on the Tomah goalie but only managed to put three goals in the net. The Icemen led 3-1 late in the period but were scored on to make the game interesting coming down to the wire. From the coaches perspective, “It was a good win that featured a lot of offensive chances that were created by hard work. It would have been nice to see a couple more goals rewarded for the effort but sometimes you run into a hot goalie. It was very positive that we didn’t panic protecting a 3-2 lead late in the third and ended with the win.” Senior goalie Trevor Brimblecom has been solid in the

E
veryone looks forward to a new year and the hope it represents. Well-wishers come at us from every direction wanting us to reap a harvest of joy and happiness, peace and prosperity. A good new year is a universal desire that everyone seeks. But how can we assure ourselves of having a happy new year? The answer comes from Isaiah 41:10. First, we must honor the two “nots” - do not be afraid and do not be dismayed. Fear and dismay will disturb our minds, trouble our souls and destroy our health. Only as we place our faith in the goodness and grace of God will our fears evaporate and dismay vanish. Second, add the two “I ams” - I am with you and I am your God. Our God is always with us and we are never beyond his reach. When problems arise he wants to solve them. When needs arise he will meet them. When foes would destroy us he will conquer them. When storms appear he will calm them. Third, we need to mix them with the three “I wills.” I will strengthen you. He has all the strength we need with some to spare. I will help you. Here is help that is seeking us and is sufficient for every situation. I will uphold you. With what? The very same hands that hold the universe together. If we want 2016 to be a happy new year we must begin every day of every week of every month of the year reading God’s word and spending time in prayer.

Marie G. Crowley Marie G. Crowley, 89, passed away peacefully Dec. 19, 2015, at Maple Ridge Care Center in Spooner. Marie G. Johnson was born Jan. 28, 1926, in Merrill, the daughter of Arvel and Martha (Duginski) Johnson. She grew up on the family farm and helped with milking the cows until, at the age of 18, she left to work at the Weinbrenner Shoe Factory in Merrill. After
working in Merrill for five years, she moved to Rockford, Ill., where she was employed for over 30 years as an inspector at Sunstrand Aviation. She met her husband, James Crowley, “on the job,” as he was also employed at Sunstrand Aviation. They were married April 25, 1959, in Rockford. Marie and James lived in Rockford for 12 years until they built their home in Belvidere, Ill., where they lived for the next 19 years. Upon their retirement, they moved to the Long Lake area south of Spooner where they made their home until James’ death in June of 2006. At that time, Marie sold their home and moved to Spooner. In her younger days, Marie enjoyed bowling

Mogansen, Alyssa Hansen, Travis Vanderhoof, Lois Stellrecht, Rose Sexton and Emily Marie Dorweiler with lots more to come. Jan. 12 a very happy anniversary to Josh and Rana Cooper when they enjoy their day together with lots more to come. Ralph Smith, way down in Texas, a very happy birthday to you as you enjoy your special day and also to Olivia Hile as she enjoys that special day on Jan. 13. Saturday, Dec. 19, Diane Hulleman took her nursing friends out to the Tower House for lunch. Joining Diane were Piper and Nancy. Beth Crosby told me she was excited about Christmas with Chad and Ashley and children Chase, Morgan and Joyel coming Dec. 23 with the rest of the family of Tom and Sunshine, Isaac, Josie and Alycia, and Shorty and Melissa and Tyler home from Madison where he is taking the short course, and Katie. All planned to be together on Dec. 24 at Garry and Beth’s. Beth tells us their aunt Gert Davis died, with her funeral being held in Janesville. Gert was a sister to Lorraine Crosby. Sympathy to the family. Also deepest sympathy to the family of Bee Lee, Glen’s sister. Her funeral was held in Frederic. All the family came to Beth’s for lunch after the funeral with near 40 attending. It certainly helps to find our gas prices down, doesn’t it? Yes, they are down to about $2 per gallon, which I think could drop a lot more but every little bit helps. We find Johnson Lumber has been sold. Yes, Arrow Building Center has made an offer and it will be done

before the end of the year. Johnson Lumber has been in the Johnson name since 1942, which is a long, long time, 73 years to add it up. I know we did buy lots from Johnson Lumber and they were certainly nice to work with. U.S. farm incomes are expected to drop 38 percent in 2015 with the lowest number in the past 13 years. Yes, milk is down, corn is down and also soybeans are down in our area. It certainly hurts the farmers. One Angus farmer tells us, “We need to expect more from Angus, and we must do more than expect, we must have a plan.” Sunday, Dec. 20, found Jerry and Gretchen Best at Gretchen’s sister-in-law’s, Gwen Strege’s, for a family get-together. It was potluck with lots of relatives attending. On Dec. 25, Jerry and Gretchen were over to Gretchen’s mom’s, Lillian Strege’s, for potluck with lots of relatives and friends attending. Scatter sunshine! Have a great week! A very happy New Year to one and all. May 2016 bring all that you have wished for! Pauline and my three boys, Rory, Rambo and Razz

Fourth-grade students Vickie Christenson, Levi Olson and Nolan Miller accompany the class choir’s song “Silver Bells” with Tam Smith on piano. The fifth-grade choir sang “Calypso Lullaby” and “The Santa Claus Rock.” It was obvious students had more fun singing the latter song.
Trumpet players Carlton Miller and Wyatt Kemp, in the sixth-grade band, gave it their all to the song “A Jubilant Carol.”
The fourthgrade class got creative with their song “Hip Hop Reindeer” by creating choreography to the lyrics. The students are making antlers on their heads with their hands to represent reindeer in the song.
