A LIFE WORTH CELEBRATING JERRY NATHANIEL DARDEN, JR.
December 2, 1958 - December 2, 2024
On December 2, 2024, Jerry Nathaniel Darden, Jr., of Newport News, Virginia, peacefully entered eternal rest on his 66th birthday. Born on December 2, 1958, to the late Jerry and Sarah Darden, Jerry grew up in Newport News, where he cultivated lifelong connections and a strong foundation of faith. He graduated as a proud member of the Warwick High School Class of 1976.
From an early age, Jerry's life was marked by his faith and dedication to service. He was baptized at The Way of the Cross Church of God in Christ and later became a devoted and faithful member of Gethsemane Baptist Church. At Gethsemane, he found joy and purpose in serving the Lord through the ushering ministry, warmly greeting all who entered, and by singing in the choir, where his voice added to the beauty of worship.
In his early working years, Jerry demonstrated diligence and a strong work ethic, contributing his time to local restaurants as a dishwasher. Even after becoming disabled, Jerry’s zest for life, kind spirit, and deep love for people remained unwavering. He had an extraordinary ability to engage those around him—whether through meaningful conversations, encouraging words, or simply sharing a lighthearted remark to brighten someone’s day. Jerry had a gift for making others feel seen, heard, and uplifted.
A man of simple joys, Jerry took delight in watching his favorite television programs, Cops and Rescue 911, often captivated by the real-life stories of bravery and service. These shows reflected qualities he val dedication, compassion, and a willingness to help others.
Jerry’s life was enriched by his family, whom he cherished deeply. He was predeceased by his loving parents, Jerry and Sarah Darden, and three siblings: Debra Denise Darden Austin, Glenwood Lestie Darden, and Karl Darden.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and treasured memories with his siblings: Shirley Darden, Karen Darden Owens, Theresa Darden-Perry, and Mark Darden. Jerry was also blessed to be surrounded by extended family, including the Daviss and Clifton families, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.
To those who knew him, Jerry was more than a brother, uncle, or friend— he was a source of kindness, strength, and encouragement. His genuine heart and unwavering faith were a testament to the life he lived and the countless lives he touched along the way.
I’m Free
Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free, I’m following the path God laid for me.
I took his hand when I heard his call, I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day, To laugh, to love, to work, to play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way, I’ve found that peace at the end of the day.
If my parting has left a void, Th en fi ll it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah, yes, these things too I will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My Life’s been full, I savoured much, Good friends, good times, a loved one’ touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me free.
