‘22 Annual Report Digital Version
To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

From the Executive Director,

It is with pride and gratitude that I present to you the Annual Report of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Napa Valley. This past year has been a remarkable journey as we continue to expand, deepen our engagement, and become a beacon of support for our community in times crisis and calm.

In 2021, we witnessed the transformative power of our programs as 2,093 children walked through our doors. Behind each digit lies a face, a story, and a life forever touched by the opportunities and guidance provided by the Club. I am thrilled to announce that this number has grown exponentially, reaching an astonishing 5,273 children by the close of 2022.

This past summer, I had the privilege of visiting with our children and staff as we launched the largest suite of summer programs in the history of our organization. With over 1,000 children benefitting from these enriching experiences, it was a testament to our commitment to their growth and well-being. But our endeavors did not end there. In the fall, alongside expanding our existing programs, we celebrated the opening of new locations at Browns Valley, Redwood, Unidos, and American Canyon Middle School. These achievements marked the beginning of a transformative period that continues to unfold.

Throughout the following months, hundreds of children and their families experienced the magic of the Club, both within our walls and beyond. From engaging in art projects and dodgeball to exploring the world of robotics and receiving academic support, our Club members thrived in an environment where they were seen, cared for, and nurtured. Moreover, we showcased the vibrant side of Napa to our children, taking our kids ice skating at Meritage, unforgettable rides on the wine train, and exhibiting their artwork at Jessup Cellars. We also celebrated their talents and stories as eight of our Club members took the center stage at the Uptown Theater, captivating a caring community with their heartfelt narratives.

While some see us as daycare, our kids passionately testify that the Club so much more. We are a second home, and extended family. The bonds forged within our walls are transcendent, creating a profound sense of belonging and support that empowers our youth to thrive.

I am deeply honored to witness the incredible work being done with these young individuals, as it not only elevates our community today but also lays the foundation for a brighter tomorrow. Within the pages of this Annual Report, you will find the collective achievements, stories, and shared aspirations that have shaped our journey over the past year. It is my sincerest hope that you will be inspired by the remarkable transformations and empowered to join us in fostering a brighter future for the children and teens of Napa Valley.

Thank you for your unwavering support and belief in our mission. Together, we are creating a lasting positive impact in the lives of our Club members and the entire community we proudly serve.

If we were to consolidate the diverse backgrounds and circumstances of the youth attending the Boys & Girls Club into a single story, it would look something like this: The average member of the Boys & Girls Club resides and goes to school in Napa. They belong to a family of four, typically accompanied by a sibling who also goes to the Club. Their parents are full-time employees, collectively earning an annual income of less than $80,000. Their living situation involves sharing a rented home with other family members or close friends. However, despite the communal resources, financial constraints often create difficulties in meeting basic needs such as nutrition and housing. Consequently, their parents find themselves juggling multiple jobs, relying on the Club's support to ensure their children are cared for when school is not in session.

“I felt disconnected when I first moved to Napa but the Boys & Girls Club quickly became my second home. The Club was my place to connect with friends. It was my place to connect with people who cared about me. It was the place I chose to give back to as a teen, as a coach, and as a leader. I found myself here, and that helped make me who I am, and I can’t wait to turn that around and share my time with kids at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Napa Valley.”

The Club leverages diverse revenue streams to ensure that our work is appropriately resourced.

The Club approach to income has evolved since the pandemic but here are some important trends between 2021 and 2022.

Despite unprecedented growth our overall reliance on fees dropped by almost half the previous year.

The rise of the UnGala has been a huge boon for Napa Valley Kids and the funds raised there allow us to offer more scholarships!

District Support in the form of ELOP has added a whole new layer of support and continues to drive our expansion.

The Club continues to leverage local, state, and national supports to drive our efforts. We devote as much funding as possible to staff and supplies because those are the most important direct service aspects of our work. We still have bills to pay though!

The Club approach to income has evolved since the pandemic but here are some important trends between 2021 and 2022.

We’ve more than doubled the amount of funding dedicated to programs both in supply but also in the number and quality of staff working directly with kids.

We’re committed to the long haul and that’s why were investing in core supports with Capital Improvements in our buildings and expanding core support structures.

If you were to summarize the average Club member’s entire year (after school, Spring, Summer, and Winter breaks into one 24 hour period here is how that time would be allotted.

over the course of the year spend more time at the Club then they do at school!

If every child who visited the Club in 2021 was the average height of a 5th grader (4.5 feet) and we laid them out head to toe, that line of kids would stretch the length of the Golden Gate Bridge (1.7 Miles). If we did the same thing for number of kids who attended in 2022 that line would stretch from Napa to Yountville! (4.5 Miles)

In the total number of kids served by the Club was greater than the number of kids served in both 2021 and 2020 combined!

If you were to take all the children attending afterschool programs in the county of Napa and combined them into a village of 100…

67 of them attend the Boys & Girls Clubs of Napa Valley.

18 of them attend programs run by Napa County. 15 of them attend other programs.

If we apply the median Household income in Napa to the typical family we serve, of their $7,000 monthly income, $6,500 goes to basic needs like Housing, Transportation, Utilities, Groceries; leaving just $500 to spend on other essentials like child care. 70% of the households we serve live below this income threshold and receive full scholarships to attend the Boys & Girls Clubs of Napa Valley.

“In California, the cost of a typical day-care center is now equal to almost half of the median income of a single mother.” (Source: The Hell of American Daycare, The New Republic) As of 2021, the average cost of childcare in Napa was $12,000 every year. The total fee to attend the Club After School for a year would be $1,000. Money never stands between a kid and the Club.

attended the Club at no Cost with a total of

in fees waived in 2022!

If you reduce the number of kids we serve to a village of 100… 60 kids live in a dual parent household.

36 kids live in households with one parent.

4 kids are homeless or in the foster care system.

Ask anyone and they’ll tell you that their kids come first. And with our Club families represented in every facet of the Napa Valley Economy we play a big role in ensuring a stable workforce.

According to survey data were able to continue to work in Napa knowing that their kids were safe and engaged at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Napa Valley!

At its core, the Club’s primary vehicle for impact can be found in the relationships between youth and staff. There is nothing more important than the quality of the person who works directly with our kids. And while we have increased staff pay dramatically over the last three years, we need to do more.

2022 2021 2020 2019

Generally speaking, when school is out, Clubs are in. After eight hours of school, kids are hungry and need to RUN, JUMP, and PLAY. We make sure they have a healthy snack and then give them some unstructured time to decompress after school.

Power Hour is a National Boys & Girls Club program that creates structured time for homework assistance and academic enrichment. When kids are done with or have no homework, they’re still engaged in activities that reinforce school day curriculum like Math-ketbal & Language Relays.

The last portion of the day is completely dedicated to enrichment that help our kids to step outside of their comfort zone. In addition to national programs like Fine Arts, Triple Play Sports, and Healthy Habits Cooking, we challenge our kids and staff to come up with a range of new and engaging programs and activities that inspire kids to do and be more.

I'm so thankful to have affordable, quality after-school care at the school site. This allows both parents to work and support the family.

The Club provides an immense value to our family as we can work while we know our child is in a safe and engaging environment. The monthly rate helps greatly our family budget. Thank you for being here!

You have been a tremendous help- in addition to after school care- my child loves the Club. It is also a huge help to me that her homework is completed so that I actually have time to engage with her when we’re home. I could not do this without You! Thanks!

My kids love the program. They love the staff too. We rely on the program as my husband and I are unable to pick them up after school. We also love the activities they do and the exposure to so many fun things.

This is SAFE place for my child and it gives us peace of mind knowing she is with people who care.

It is very important because I don’t have a babysitter who I can trust. B &G is one of the only places where my kids feel secure.

It is important to us as a family to have an afterschool place for our little one, due to work and he can also mingle with friends in a safety, trustful and fun environment. Thank you SOO much for existing!

The Club is a huge blessing for my family. I can work and I don’t have to worry about my child. I know he is safe and cared for.

My daughter loves it there and always looks forward to attending the program daily. She does her homework at the Club. She loves socializing with her peers and enjoys all the art activities.

The Club is a great community service and helps out parents like me who cant afford care after school. They have done so well with my 3 kids, everyone is so nice and great and my kids learn allot from them.

Without the Club we have no idea what we would do with our younger children. The staffs help with their overall wellbeing, homework, and social skills allows us to focus on the parenting.

I don’t have someone to pick up my kids after school. Boys and Girls Club is a huge help for us. Thanks for everything you guys do to keep our children happy and help them grow.

Its important for me and my child, to my child on his socialization with others, homework, and fun activities. For me it's important because I have a secure place for my child after school. A place I know he loves.

As my brothers and I walk down Pueblo Avenue in Napa, the street we grew up on, I see a beautiful community full of culture, loyalty, hardworking people, and family. At the same time, my community is surrounded by gangs, violence, and a lot of opportunity to make bad decisions. That’s why I found myself at the Club, the...

Some moments seem inconsequential at the time but turn out to be anything but. They spark something in you and though the immediate impact isn’t clear it brings out something within you- things you didn't know were possible.

The Club is expanding on programmatic enrichment supports and has an array of opportunities currently ongoing and in development. In addition to core enrichment programs like Keystone, Youth of the Year, Athletics, and the Arts we plan to expand programs like Ready. Set. Work, a career panel program, with a VR training component for skill building. One of the biggest challenges we face is found in our expansion to school based locations. With so many sites in operation it’s challenging to organize and implement broad, equitable, and meaningful enrichment opportunities across all locations. So, here are a couple pilot programs we are hoping to roll out over the 23/24 year.

We love sharing data points and since July 1 of 2021 the Club’s publications have reached over 50,000 people locally. Over 9,000 individuals have spent significant time clicking through our magazines, resulting in thousands of unique clicks to our website or social media pages. That’s important because, as you know Napa is a small community and when people visit our website or review these publications, they want to know who is helping to make this work possible and whether you’re a parent, a participant or a sponsor, that continues to be you; so, THANK YOU!
