Hafa Adai GCA Members As 2018 draws to a close, we are now starting the holiday season once again. It didn’t seem that long ago that we celebrated a new year. My how time flies! In October, GCA celebrated Careers in Construction Month (CIC) with a proclamation signing from the Calvo Administration and a Resolution by the 34th Guam Legislature. GCA held several events to celebrate the occasion. To kick off CIC, GCA held its 26th Annual GCA Family Day picnic at Ypao Beach Park. Here, member companies and their families enjoyed food, music, camaraderie and friendly competition among its members. The weather was beautiful, and fun was had by all. Also, as part of CIC, GCA launched a new outreach program to promote the career opportunities in the construction industry. The GCA Construction Warriors was created to showcase the various trades in the construction industry. It is an interactive career exploratory event that offers an educational opportunity to work with tools, understand safety requirements and learn about the construction trades. The event was opened to students in Guam’s middle and high schools enrolled in a Career Technical Education (CTE) and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) track. We had several GCA members who stepped up to the plate and offered financial and logistical support to make this happen. GCA hosted over 200 students at this event. This event was a joint effort between GCA and GCA Trades Academy. In November, GCA held its 2018 Excellence in Construction and Contractor of the Year Premier Awards Event at the Dusit Thani Guam Resort. Black Construction Corporation went away with an unprecedented sweep of awards this year to include 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place overall finishes, the Excellence in Safety Award and the coveted Contractor of the Year Award. This is the first time since I’ve been at GCA, that a company has swept all the awards. This year’s EIC awards were very close and the top five finishers were all within a fraction of a point of each other. This year, Guam will have five excellent projects entered in the National Excellence in Construction competition on March 27, 2019 in Long Beach CA. hosted by the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). We are looking forward to winning Eagle Awards from the national competition.

9 SAME Guam Post 15+ OCD
Started in 1952 as a training mission for the United States Air Force. It has since become the longest running United States Department of Defense mission in full operation, and the longest running humanitarian airlift in the world. Today this unique Christmas tradition is continued with the donations from the residents and businesses of Guam. Each box dropped from a C-130 aircraft weighs nearly 400 pounds (180 kg) and contains items such as fishing nets, construction materials, powdered milk, canned goods, rice, coolers, clothing, shoes, toys and school supplies.

did you know? Mornings: Make Them Productive! As a business owner or employee, you can’t afford to have slow mornings. How often do you find yourself dragging in the morning and not getting much accomplished? Not everyone can be “morning people,” but that doesn’t mean you should accept unproductive mornings. Here are a few things you can do to perk up your morning routine: • Rise and shine: Get to bed at a reasonable hour. Waking up in the morning will be much easier. Once you’re awake, do something you enjoy (exercise, catch up on the news, etc.) before heading to work. • “Micro-manage” your morning: Get your clothes ready, prepare your lunch, and do tasks that add stress to the start of your day. Getting up with these tasks already completed gives you a sense of accomplishment and saves you time (and stress). Also, make a to-do list that prioritizes tasks to complete when you get to work. Takes a few minutes to make a list, but it could save you hours the next day. • Have some brain food: The science is still out on whether breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but you can’t argue about the benefits it can have on your body. Eating high-protein foods when you wake up can help you naturally sustain energy. • Tailor your day to you: If you are more creative in the morning, block out the afternoon for more administrative tasks like phone calls, meetings, and emails (or vice versa if you're more creative later in the day). That way, your morning hours are set for tasks best suited to you at that time of day. • Chill out on the caffeine: Drinking coffee and other caffeinated beverages can lead to energy spikes and crashes that impact your productivity. Drink a glass of water to hydrate you and give you some energy before your morning coffee. Wait before having a second cup and give the caffeine time to kick in; you might not need more.

Delegation Is Not a Bad Thing As a business owner, manager, or leader; delegating can be a sticky situation. You may not want to relinquish control of a task or responsibility because someone else won’t “do the job correctly.” Rather than delegate, you may think it’s just easier to do the task yourself. What you may not realize is that delegating tasks is key to your business’ effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity. It can allow you to focus on high-level tasks, build trust with your team, and give you time to develop your skills while helping employees grow their own skillsets. Here are a few tips to create a system of delegation that works for you and your team: • Cut the cord: It can be hard to let someone else complete your work, so delegate small tasks before relinquishing your more important projects. • Decide what you can let go: Figure out which tasks you can and should delegate based on the expertise of your team. • Choose who you delegate to wisely: Get to know your team, including their work habits, strengths, weaknesses, and skillsets, so you can trust who you’re delegating to. • Be clear with instructions: Just because a task is second nature to you doesn’t mean it will be for someone else. Provide instructions on how you would like the assignment carried out, as well as any deadlines or milestones. Don’t micro-manage! • Give credit where credit’s due: Let your employees know when they’ve done well on a delegated task, praise them in public, and offer constructive criticism if they missed the mark.

FEATURE STORY
By: R.D. Gibson The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Titanic, West Side Story, The Last Emperor, and The Silence of the Lambs. All these films share a lot of in common. They have all been blockbuster films; ones that have shaped the landscape of cinema within the last 50 years. They swept the Oscars, especially Silence of the Lambs, which took home the coveted Big Five Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay! In the spirit of sweeping awards, this year we congratulate Black Construction Corporation on not just another notch for Excellence in Construction, but 2018’s Contractor of the Year award - their 16th. No, seriously. Two years ago, we were congratulating them for winning the same award, as well. Additionally, we wrote about the ongoing saga of BCC - the cunning protagonist whose narrative has spanned six decades. Moreover, the BCC family is one that is rooted in excellence, teamwork, quality work, a dynamic culture of safety, and above all, community involvement. The BCC packet boasts their commitment to long-term growth within their expansive network. BCC’s portfolio isn’t just impressive. It is immaculate and demonstrates how committed they are to their projects and how unafraid they are to conquer what some may perceive as impossible. That is how saga heroes are supposed to be. These include the Kosrae Public Safety and Jailhouse Building Project (2015), Guam Commercial Port Improvement Project Facility Expansion (2015), Ordot Dump Closure and Dero Road Sewer Improvements (2016), and Chuuk International Airport Runway Rehabilitation (2017) for which BCC received the ABC National Excellence in Construction awards; They also received a National Excellence in Construction Pyramid Award in 2017 for the regulatory closure of the Puerto Rico Dump. And, just recently they received the 2018 ENR International Award of Merit for the previous

project as well as the Construction of the Eloy S. Inos Peace Park. These awards speak to the professionalism and enduring commitment to safety Black Construction has built their reputation upon. Moreover, their network expands beyond the horizons of Guam sandy beaches and sunsets; as close as the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia to the Indian Ocean and the Philippines. It’s in these various pockets where BCC finds themselves making a real difference not just in local infrastructure and construction, but in their respective communities. They’re investing in the where they work and live - wanting to make a difference - and BCC does that through their employees. These employees find places where Black can help - be it technology, public safety, or education - and they make it happen! It’s evident in several of their committees, which highlight community dialogue, volunteerism, participation in activities. Isn’t that what we all look for in a protagonist, a hero, anyway? Valiant, brave, and courageous desire to do good for the people they want to protect. Sure, they are swinging swords and fighting dragons or whatever fearful creature, but in this case, Black is using heavy equipment and making sure to stay in deadline to keep a community from remaining stagnant and growing continuously. All heroes are not one-size-fits all after all, right? I can understand how authors can get writers block. It isn’t because there isn’t enough to write about, but the exact opposite. But, what do we highlight? Where do we guide the characters? What twists and turns do we lead them toward? What obstacles do we place in their way? (It’s only fair.) Do we want them to win in the end? Of course, we do! However, what attributes do heroes need? Is it just to be fearless? It is impossible to think that all of the heroes

throughout history weren’t scared. Or, how about confidence? Not arrogance. Confidence: the belief in one’s abilities. And Black is confident because of their experience. If the list of awards and projects in their portfolio isn’t any indication, we don’t know what is. It’s what they have done with this confidence that shines through in their community outreach, the work and training they have done with their employees, and the overall satisfaction of their customers and community partners that makes BCC an invulnerable protagonist, who we continue to root for until the very end - which appears may not exist.
14 Contractor of the Year awards, it goes to show that hard work, a touch of bravery, a dash of confidence, and heart are the very essence of any saga. I wonder how many installments will be included in this potential film/hardcover franchise. Anyway, the envelope, please. And this year’s Contractor of the Year and the Excellence in Construction awards go to - none other than - Black Construction Corporation. On behalf of the Guam Contractors Association and the communities you serve, congratulations and sen dangkulo’ na si Yu’os Ma’åse!
This mantlepiece doesn’t signify the end of this story. As we look toward the future of construction and development throughout the region, we can only anticipate there will be additions, inserts, and greater adventures that await the BCC family. However, with

In the very-public world of social media and entertainment, awards shows are the pinnacle of recognizing up-and-comers, the talented, and even the infamous. They help artists make comebacks and prove the world wrong, but they can also be laden with some of the cringiest moments. Even though they can be embarrassing, awards season calls to mind some of the biggest mess ups in award shows history. Awards shows never want to mess up and recognize the wrong person or group. For instance, there was the Oscars debacle when La La Land was named Best Picture when it was really awarded to Moonlight in 2017. What about when John Travolta introduced Idina Menzel as Adele Dazeem? Then there was the infamous Steve Harvey flub of the century when he proclaimed Miss Colombia was to be crowned Miss Universe instead of the real winner Miss Philippines. Comical memes follow and it usually dies out after a while.

Every year the Guam Contractors Association and its membership celebrate the Contractor of the Year and the Excellence in Construction awards. Fortunately, the Guam Contractors Association doesn’t have a live broadcast. There is no opportunity to mishear the correct name. Yet, the unnerving task has everybody on their toes. How can we equate each company, their individual achievements - their stand-out projects, commitment to the environment, an impeccable safety record, and overall commitment to the island? It is daunting. It is stressful. It is anxiety-ridden. It keeps the judges up at night. Okay, that last part may have been an embellishment. Yet, in an industry where companies vary in their product and services, the task of choosing the winners can be a frustrating one - especially when the GCA membership boasts powerhouse companies who aren’t just literally building our community, but strengthen the figurative foundation of compassion, assistance, and inafa’maolek.

The only joint venture company to vie for the Contractor of the Year is running on one, single project. But, it’s a big one. And this just goes to show that nominations do not require extensive project lists and expositions. Granite-Obayashi Joint Venture’s $165 million Finegayan Utilities and Site Improvements Project. This project is in preparation for the move nearly 2,000 U.S. Marines. All the construction is for creating buildings and infrastructure needed to support the influx of the population. As a joint venture, it makes sense that they would be working with other businesses to enhance their work - bidding out other work to smaller businesses. At its core, Granite-Obayashi is all about partnership and collaboration, something that is evident in the community that they are bringing together. In light of the four nominees, it is without a doubt that they are all deserving of these awards. This list highlights community engagement, a variety of projects, and safety. The GCA has the tough job of choosing between some of the best contractors not just in the region but throughout the world.
With humble beginnings, Ian “Jay” Chong started Ian Corporation with his bare hands - literally. Since 1989 and in various capacities, his construction experience let to the founding of Ian Corporation in 2005. With quality workmanship, on-time delivery, and total customer satisfaction at the forefront of its mission as a small business, Ian Corporation continues to keep the big fish on their toes. This includes their sole-distributor role in Guam for GMA Trench Protection Services, their extensive list of government and military contracts, and expansive internal growth within the last decade. This is manifest, not just with their work portfolio, but the awards they have been nominated for and received, including numerous Excellence awards, Special Safety awards, and even an ABC National Safety Excellence Award in 2017. This was their 6th year to be nominated for the Guam Contractors Association Contractor of the Year award.

People understand Murphy’s Law as “if something can go wrong, it will go wrong.” Ironically enough, Murphy Enterprises, Inc. has been working for the last 27 years to do the exact opposite. Their core services are renovations, roofing, painting, and specialty coatings. These services have been provided to a wide array of facilities including schools, military facilities, warehouses, hotels, residences, and restaurants. Their list of past projects brings to mind numerous landmarks on island, including John F. Kennedy High School, Bishop Baumgartner Middle School, Lotte Hotel, Pacific Islands Club, the Guam International Airport Authority, the Guam Main Facility, the Guam Department of Education, and Guam Housing and Urban Renewal Authority. Their portfolio is vast and impressive, and demonstrates MEI’s commitment to building, fortifying, and making sure things go right.
Established in 1992, Smithbridge Guam, Inc. has had 26 years of service in Guam. Sometimes it takes dialing things back and taking a simplistic approach to getting the job done. At Smithbridge, their business runs on collaboration between all the employees that fuels their reputation, often avoiding the spotlight and using that reputation and skillset to generate their buzz about their services. For Smithbridge, it’s about making moves as a family, and this family boasts over 4 million manhours without a lost time injury and a 2016 GCA Safety award. Sometimes it is all about heart, and that’s what Smithbridge has and demonstrates through their work in the community with local organizations, schools, sports clubs, charities, churches, and within the industry itself. Sometimes that’s all you need.
