HEAD COACH MIKE DREVES

ASSISTANT COACH RYAN EDWARDS

Ryan Edwards enters his fourth season as an assistant men’s soccer coach at Grove City College. Edwards joined the Grove City program prior to the start of the 2010 season and helped the Wolverines to a 15-6-2 mark, along with a berth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Championship Tournament finals. Overall, Grove City owns a 35-21-4 mark with Edwards on the coaching staff. Edwards came to Grove City after playing four seasons at perennial national powerhouse Messiah College. He helped the Falcons to national titles in 2004, 2005 and 2006. As a senior in 2007, Edwards helped Messiah advance to the national semifinals. While at Messiah, Edwards worked at the school’s summer camps. He also worked at the United States Naval Academy’s summer soccer camp. Edwards works as a chemistry teacher for the Grove City Area School District. He lives in Grove City with his wife, Lynn.

COACHING STAFF

Mike Dreves enters his eighth season as Grove City College’s head men’s soccer coach. In his first seven seasons, Dreves has guided the Wolverines to 66 total wins and six Presidents’ Athletic Conference Tournament appearances. The 2011 Wolverines recorded 12 wins overall, including a 6-1-1 conference mark. Grove City qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Championship Tournament. In 2010, Dreves directed Grove City to 15 victories and to the championship match of the ECAC Tournament. In 2006 -- his first season at the helm -- Grove City advanced to the ECAC semifinals after upsetting top-seeded Swarthmore in the quarterfinals. Last year, Grove City went 8-9-2 overall, including a 5-2-1 conference record. A 1997 Grove City College graduate, Dreves took over as head coach in June 2006 after serving as an assistant coach for five seasons under retired head coach Dr. Don Lyle. As an assistant coach, he helped the Wolverines post four winning seasons, an average of 11 wins per season and two postseason berths. In 2005, Grove City captured its first-ever Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championship Tournament title with a 2-1 victory over top-seeded Washington & Jefferson. The Wolverines advanced to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Championship Tournament finals and finished 2005 with a 13-6-5 record. In addition to excelling on the field, Grove City players have also fared well in the classroom. The program earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award each year from 2008 to 2012. Grove City also received the NSCAA Ethics Award in 2009. Dreves earned four letters as a player at Grove City from 1993-96. He captained the 1995 and 1996 teams and helped lead the Wolverines to the 1996 PAC and ECAC titles. The 1996 team earned the program’s first PAC title and also posted a program-record 16 victories. Dreves’ coaching career began at the scholastic level. He guided the Titusville (Pa.) High School boys’ soccer program from 1997-2000, directing the Rockets to 39 wins and one Tri-County Athletic Conference championship (1998) in four seasons. He then joined the Grove City coaching staff prior to the start of the 2001 season. Dreves graduated from Grove City in May 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics/secondary education. He then earned his master’s degree in exercise science at nearby Slippery Rock University. Dreves has also attained the NSCAA “Premier” license as well as the United States Soccer Federation’s “A” license. He taught mathematics at both Titusville (1997-2001) and Mercer (2001-06) High Schools before coming to the College. Dreves joined the Grove City athletic department on a full-time basis in June 2006 as an assistant professor of physical education and as Fitness Room Coordinator. In June 2012, Dreves became the athletic department’s compliance coordinator. He lives in Pine Township with his wife Sue (also a 1997 Grove City graduate) and their two sons, Joshua and Isaac.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

SEASON PREVIEW

2013 SEASON PREVIEW Few programs in the region can match the longterm success of the Grove City College men's soccer program since its 1938 inception. For 74 years, the Wolverines have ranked among the area's small college elite. So it should come as no surprise that rampant optimism courses through the program as the 75th anniversary season approaches this fall. Eighth-year head coach Mike Dreves will welcome back seven full-time starters and several other key contributors for the 2013 season. The Wolverines will look to move back to the top of the Presidents' Athletic Conference after compiling a 5-2-1 mark in league play last year. Throughout Grove City's proud history, defense has been a staple of Wolverine success. Over the past 10 seasons, Grove City has recorded 75 shutouts and the Wolverines expect defense to be a strong suit again this fall. In goal, Grove City returns three veterans who all own extensive collegiate experience. Senior Chris Burgan earned First Team All-PAC as a freshman in 2010 but will battle two sophomores for the starting nod this fall.

Junior defender George DeAugustino has made 38 consecutive starts for Grove City entering the 2013 season.

Second-year performer Brenden Alfery started 11 matches as a rookie last year and compiled a 1.03 goals-against average. Classmate Ben Weaver started eight matches in 2012 and recorded a 1.15 goals-against mark. An experienced group of defenders will augment Grove City's goalkeepers this fall. Senior Daniel Adams returns at outside back after making 53 total starts over his first three seasons. He led Grove City in assists last year and earned Second Team All-Conference recognition. Like Adams, junior George DeAugustino has been a starter at outside back since his freshman season. He has helped the Wolverines to 14 shutouts over his first two seasons and is expected to be a vital part of the backline this fall. Senior Brian Wilkes will challenge for a starting spot at defender after lettering in each of the previous two seasons. Sophomore defender Jake Botzenhart will also look to break into the lineup after playing as a reserve in 2012. Numerous veterans will patrol the midfield area for the Wolverines this fall.

Sophomore Brenden Alfery started 11 matches in goal for Grove City during the 2012 season. He will compete for the full-time starting spot in goal this fall.

MEN’S SOCCER 2013 -- THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON

2013 SEASON PREVIEW At forward, junior Jordan Carmichael, junior Jonathan Rothgeb and sophomore Tim Shackleton all lettered in 2012 and are in the mix for starting assignments. Rothgeb and Carmichael both appeared in all 19 matches last year while Shackleton played in 18. Sophomore Ben Hinkle will also contend for a spot in the lineup after playing in 11 matches as a rookie. A number of newcomers may also compete for time this season. Grove City opens the 2013 season August 30-31 with a pair of matches at Frostburg State. Grove City faces Frostburg State in the opener, then squares off with Buffalo State the next day. The home schedule begins September 4 against longtime non-conference rival Allegheny. The conference schedule also starts at home October 4 when Waynesburg visits College Field on Homecoming Weekend. Grove City wraps up the regular season November 2 against conference rival Thomas More.

SEASON PREVIEW

Sophomore Justin Phillips returns as a starting midfielder for Grove City. He started all 19 matches as a freshman last year.

Seniors Richie Kocur and Kyle Matherne both return as regular starters for Grove City. Matherne tied for second on the team with three goals in 2012 while Kocur is Grove City's active career leader with 58 appearances. Junior Mike Shupp is a two-year letterman who will contend for a full-time starting spot in 2013. Grove City also returns its leading scorer from 2012 in sophomore midfielder Seth Loew. A First Team AllPAC selection, Loew made an immediate splash as a rookie by scoring a team-high six goals. His 15 points also led the team. Sophomore Justin Phillips earned a starting spot in preseason camp at midfielder and returns after starting all 19 matches in 2012. Sophomore Jonathan Mathes will look to break into the lineup at midfielder after seeing spot duty as a reserve.

Senior midfielder Kyle Matherne returns for his fourth season at Grove City. He will look to maintain a full-time starting spot this fall.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

2012 IN REVIEW

2012 IN REVIEW The Grove City College men's soccer team's 2012 season proves that simply glancing at an overall record does not begin to tell the entire story. The Wolverines finished 8-9-2 overall, including a 5-2-1 record in Presidents' Athletic Conference play. Six of Grove City's 19 matches went to overtime or double overtime and one goal decided five other matches. The Wolverines recorded eight shutouts and held opponents to a 1.07 goals-against average for the season. Grove City posted six shutout victories and yielded just one goal over the final 400 minutes of the season. Nineteen men started multiple matches during the season and 12 scored at least one goal. Senior defender Josh Kern and freshman midfielder Seth Loew both earned First Team All-Conference after the season while senior forward Andrew Quinn and junior defender Daniel Adams both captured Second Team All-PAC recognition. Senior midfielder Alex Ayer earned Honorable Mention from the league's head coaches. Loew led Grove City with six goals and 15 points while Quinn and Ayer both tied for second with eight points on three goals and two assists.

Adams led the Wolverines with a career-high five assists. In goal, freshmen Brenden Alfery and Ben Weaver combined to start all 19 matches, providing strong support for defenders Adams, Kern, senior Jesse Wilson and sophomore George DeAugustino. DeAugustino, Kern and Wilson all started 19 matches in 2012, as did Ayer and freshman midfielder Justin Phillips. Grove City opened the season with four consecutive road matches. After dropping a pair of overtime decisions during that first week of play, the Wolverines broke through September 7 and earned a 1-0 win at Adrian. Ayer scored in the 54th minute to break the scoreless tie. Alfery posted his first collegiate shutout. The next day, Grove City opened its home schedule by rolling to a 6-2 victory over visiting Hilbert. Quinn scored twice in a 22-second span in the first half to help Grove City bolt to a 4-0 lead. Jonathan Rothgeb added a goal and an assist in the victory while Weaver stopped seven shots for his first win. The Wolverines celebrated Homecoming Weekend September 21 by blanking visiting Point Park at College Field, 1-0, as freshman Tim Shackleton scored his first collegiate goal in the 36th minute. Alfery stopped three shots to preserve the win. Grove City opened conference play September 29 by blasting Bethany 4-0 at College Field. Loew scored twice in the triumph while Ayer and sophomore Mike Shupp also scored. A 1-0 overtime setback against Thomas More October 3 evened Grove City's league record at 1-1. However, the Wolverines quickly recovered three days later against visiting Waynesburg. Rothgeb scored 10 minutes into the match and Kyle Matherne's goal at 83:31 sewed up the win. The win marked the 500th in program history for Grove City, which also improved to 2-1 in the conference. Grove City concluded its four-match homestand with a 3-0 win over conference foe Thiel. Junior Richie Kocur put the Wolverines ahead at 23:01 by directing a loose ball into the net. In the second half, Ayer and Matherne both scored in the first 3:07 to clinch the win. Weaver and Chris Burgan combined for the shutout in goal. Following a 3-2 overtime setback October 17 against non-conference rival Carnegie Mellon, the nation's eighth-ranked squad, Grove City moved closer to a berth in the conference tournament by earning a 0-0 draw at Geneva.

Senior forward Andrew Quinn earned Second Team AllPresidents’ Athletic Conference honors following the 2012 season.

Grove City raised its league record to 4-2-1 October 24 by vanquishing Saint Vincent, 5-1, in the regular season road finale. Sophomore Jordan Carmichael registered his first collegiate hat trick and also assisted on a Loew goal. Loew also assisted two of Carmichael's scores. Grove City owned a 33-9 advantage in shots and a 7-1 corner kick edge. The Wolverines capped the regular season October 27 with a 1-0 home win over archrival Westminster. Grove City surrendered just four total shots as Alfery notched the shutout win. Loew scored an unassisted goal 18 minutes into the match. The run to another conference title came to an end in the conference tournament semifinals at Geneva October 31, however. Again, Grove City blanked Geneva for 110 minutes before the teams proceeded into a shootout. Geneva advanced to the tournament finals by edging Grove City in the shootout, 8-7.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

PROGRAM HISTORY

PROGRAM HISTORY

Since its humble beginnings in 1938, the Grove City College men’s soccer program has emerged as one of the region’s finest. Few programs can match the sustained level of excellence that the Grove City program has attained over the last 70 years. The soccer program began in 1938 under the direction of legendary coach/athletic director Robert E. “Bob” Thorn. Grove City’s rise to the area’s elite began during those formative years as the Wolverines posted a 10-3 record in the 1941-42 seasons. Following World War II, Grove City continued to excel on the field. In 1948, the Wolverines recorded their first undefeated season by going 5-0-3. Four years later, Grove City completed its first perfect season by winning all six matches on the 1952 schedule. Grove City followed with an 18-4-2 mark over the next three seasons. In 1956, Grove City went 7-0-0. Frank

Grove City made its first appearance in the NCAA Championship Tournament in 1962.

Buttner became the College’s first two-time All-American as he earned First Team All-America in both 1958 and 1959. Cliff Wettig replaced Leviton as head coach in 1962 and made an immediate -- and immeasurable -- impact on the program. In his first season, Wettig guided Grove City to a 6-4-1 record and the school’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. The next year, John Mulholland earned Honorable Mention All-America at fullback as Grove City went 63-0. The 1964 team set a new program record for wins by going 9-0-0. In 1965, only a 1-1 draw against Pitt

Grove City’s 1948 team (above) went 5-0-3 while the 1952 team (below) went 6-0-0.

The 1964 team (above) went 9-0-0 while many of the same contributors helped the 1965 Wolverines (below) register an 8-0-1 mark.

Sbrocco became the College’s first All-American as he earned Honorable Mention at outside left that season. Ross Emerson graduated as the squad’s all-time leading scorer with 48 goals. Following Thorn’s retirement, Dan Leviton took over as head coach from 1957-61. During his tenure, Peter kept Grove City from a second straight perfect season as the Wolverines went 8-0-1. The 1969 squad tied the single-season program record for wins by going 9-2. Fullback Matthew Lux earned Second Team All-America that year. The Wolverines compiled a 7-3-0 record in 1970, Wettig’s final year as head coach. Russ Trimmer then coached Grove City to a 5-3-1 mark in 1971. Don Lyle became the fifth head coach in program history prior to the start of the 1972 season. After four

PROGRAM HISTORY solid seasons, Grove City broke through in 1976 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship Tournament. In the process, the Wolverines won a school-record 10 matches and advanced further in an NCAA Tournament than any other Grove City squad. In 1977, Grove City again broke the single-season win mark by going 11-3-0. The Wolverines closed the

The Wolverines also captured the program’s first ECAC title. Greg Kreutzberg scored a school-record 25 goals. Following a 10-win season in 2000, the Wolverines then returned to the ECAC Tournament with a 13-6-1 overall record.

In 1996, Grove City won 16 matches, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference title and the ECAC Tournament.

Following a brief dry spell, Grove City rebounded in the middle of the 1980s. The Wolverines followed up a 9-4-1 mark in 1985 by going 11-2-1 in 1986. Defender Bill Juergens earned Second Team All-America honors following the 1986 season. Grove City returned to the postseason in 1995 by qualifying for the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship Tournament (ECAC). The next year, Grove City shattered the single-season win record by going 16-2 and earning a share of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference crown.

PROGRAM HISTORY

The 1980 team made Grove City’s third all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

The new decade continued to prove bountiful for Grove City. After 23 total wins in 2003 and 2004, the Wolverines won their first-ever outright PAC title in 2005. Grove City also reached the ECAC Tournament finals. Mike Dreves, who captained the 1995 and 1996 teams, succeeded Lyle as head coach in 2006. He guided Grove City to 11 wins and a berth in the ECAC semifinals in his first season as coach. That year, Bob McNees became Grove City’s all-time leader in goals with 63. In 2010, Grove City posted 15 wins and advanced to the ECAC Tournament finals. Senior Chuck Witt became the program’s first First Team CoSIDA Academic All-American following the season. Tim Boswell and Brian Eckenhoff both earned Academic All-America in 2011 after helping the Wolverines to 12 wins and another ECAC Tournament invitation.

The Wolverines celebrated the country’s bicentennial in 1976 by advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals.

THE PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Comprised of 10 select private colleges and universities - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high-pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. During the 2005-06 academic year, Chatham, Geneva and Saint Vincent all joined the PAC. Chatham competed for PAC championships for the first time during the 2007-08 academic year. Saint Vincent first competed for conference titles in 2010-11.

ABOUT GROVE CITY COLLEGE

ABOUT THE COLLEGE

The beautifully landscaped campus of Grove City College stretches over 150 acres and includes 28 neoGothic buildings. It is considered one of the loveliest in the nation. While the College has changed to meet the needs of the society it serves, its basic philosophy has remained unchanged since its founding in 1876. It is a Christian, liberal arts institution, dedicated to the principle of providing the highest quality education at the lowest possible cost. Wishing to remain truly independent and to retain its distinctive qualities as a private school governed by private citizens (trustees), it is one of few colleges in the country that does not accept federal funds. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but not narrowly denominational, the College believes that to be well-educated a student should be exposed to the central ideas of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Grove City College offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, sciences, engineering, business, and music and is distinguished as a national leader in education. Grove City’s programs in electrical and mechanical engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission Board of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The “big business school curriculum” prepares students for today’s global business reality. An extensive variety of internship opportunities are provided across the curriculum. Grove City College wants its students to be prepared in this age of mobile information technology. Each entering freshman receives a tablet computer which is his or hers to keep upon graduation with a four-year degree. This is part of the Information Technology Initiative, a total program integrating technology across the curriculum.

PROGRAMS AND MAJORS

Grove City College’s Breen Student Union

The College believes that its student body has a unique mix of talents and abilities. Its Career Services program helps students identify those key assets during the first year and then builds a four-year strategy to help them pursue a satisfying career. Personal counseling, professional speakers, databases, alumni contacts, summer internships, corporate visits, employer presentations and more are incorporated into the career preparation experience. Grove City follows the semester calendar plan, in addition to offering two-week sessions in January and May. Most of the 2,500 students live in separate men’s and women’s dormitories. The rest are local commuters or married students. A full program of cultural, professional, athletic and social activities is offered, including 19 intercollegiate varsity athletic teams. Grove City, a town of 8,100 people, is located 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. It is located near Interstates 79 and 80 and has a municipal airport.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

All 19 of Grove City College’s intercollegiate varsity athletic teams utilize the College’s superior facilities for competition, practices and off-season training and conditioning. Grove City’s athletic facilities have undergone numerous renovations and improvements in recent years, with more upgrades scheduled in the immediate future. On lower campus, Robert E. Thorn Field is home to the College’s football and track and field teams. The College installed CSTurf at Robert E. Thorn Field. CSTurf is a synthetic playing surface that features polyethylene LSR grass fibers and a rubber infill system. The College also installed lights and resurfaced the 8-lane track around the field. Grove City also reconfigured its setup for track meets during these renovations. In 2011, the College installed a new state-ofthe-art scoreboard and new bleachers on the visitors’ side at Thorn Field. These upgrades benefit the entire campus community as the complex is used by both the College’s club sports teams and its intramural program, along with the varsity teams. The track is also available for use by recreational walkers and joggers. The complex also features 10 all-weather tennis courts next to the stadium. Phillips Field House, located at the north end of the complex, features several locker rooms, an athletic training room, meeting rooms and coaches’ offices. It is used by the football, track and tennis programs throughout the academic year. The Physical Learning Center (PLC) houses the Grove City College Arena, home to the College’s basketball and volleyball programs. In summer 2012, the College renovated the Arena by installing new lighting and a new playing floor. In recent years, the Arena has also received new scoreboards and scorers’ tables.

In addition, the PLC features the James E. Longnecker Pool, one of the premier aquatic facilities in the region. Each year, Grove City hosts the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the state-of-the-art facility. In 2012, the College also hosted the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships at the James E. Longnecker Pool. The PLC also features a second pool, the Recreational Pool, which is used by members of the College community year-round. A fitness room featuring aerobic and Cybex equipment and a separate weight room with free and mechanized weights are also keystone areas of the facility. The PLC also features six racquetball/handball courts as well as two adjacent intramural rooms. The intramural rooms each feature four basketball courts, four indoor tennis courts, four volleyball courts, an indoor track and two indoor jumping pits. The College installed new synthetic flooring and several new electronic scoreboards throughout the intramural rooms. The Physical Learning Center houses the athletic training room, locker rooms and offices for coaches and physical education faculty. The College recently constructed a new office suite for coaches and athletic administration, while also incorporating its Athletic Hall of Fame area. Grove City’s outdoor athletic facilities have also received numerous upgrades in recent years. The varsity soccer field, College Field, was expanded and re-sodded during the summer of 2005. College Field also received a new press box during the summer of 2007. Meanwhile, Grove City’s baseball and softball facilities recently received major facelifts as new dugouts, new fencing and electronic scoreboards were installed on both fields.
