HEAD COACH MATT ROYER

Matt Royer is Grove City’s interim head baseball coach for the 2016 season. A highly-decorated collegiate baseball coach, Royer returns to the NCAA Division III level after nearly two decades as a Division I and II head baseball coach. Royer has spent 19 seasons as a head baseball coach at the collegiate level. He worked for five years (2003-07) as head coach at Liberty University, his alma mater. The Flames earned runner-up honors in the Big South Conference three times under Royer. He guided Liberty to three 30-win seasons, including a program-record 39 wins during the 2006 season. Eight of his players were selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Prior to taking over at Liberty, Royer built Kutztown (Pa.) University into an NCAA Division II powerhouse in 10 years as coach from 1993 to 2002. He led the Bears to the 2001 and 2002 Division II World Series after winning the North Atlantic Region crown in each season. He earned North Atlantic Coach of the Year honors in 2001 and 2002 as well as four Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division Coach of the Year awards. Kutztown captured three division titles and two PSAC championships during Royer’s tenure. The Bears went 271-176 under Royer’s guidance. Kutztown inducted him its Hall of Fame in 2010. Royer’s collegiate coaching career began in 1989 at Harper (Ill.) College. In 1990, he took over as head baseball coach at Division III Wheaton (Ill.) College and coached the team for three seasons. Overall, he owns a 496-387 record as a head college baseball coach. Most recently, Royer served as head baseball coach at Twin Valley (Pa.) High School from 2009 to 2014. Royer earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education at Liberty and then added his master’s in physical education at The University of Arizona in 1982.

ASSISTANT COACH CORY HAKE

Cory Hake is in his ninth season as an assistant coach at Grove City College. He joined the Grove City staff after spending four years as the head baseball coach at nearby Slippery Rock High School (2002-05). Hake helped the Wolverines capture the Presidents’ Athletic Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Championship Tournament in 2008. In 2010, Grove City advanced to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Championship Tournament for the first time in program history. The 2011 team won the PAC regular season title as well as the ECAC Tournament crown. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Calvin College in 1994. Hake then completed his master’s degree from the U.S. Sports Academy in 2000. He is currently principal at nearby Slippery Rock High School.

SEASON PREVIEW

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

2016 SEASON PREVIEW The 2016 edition of the Grove City College baseball program will feature numerous familiar faces as seven starters and several other key contributors are back. The program has a new face at the helm, however, as longtime collegiate coach Matt Royer takes over as head coach for the 2016. He will look to merge his experiences with a veteran squad this year as Grove City looks to return to the Presidents’ Athletic Conference’s elite. INFIELD Grove City returns three starters in the infield, including Second Team All-PAC selection Matt Waugaman at first base. Waugaman led Grove City with six homers, 25 runs batted in and a .653 slugging percentage in 2015. The left-handed Waugaman is a two-year starter for Grove City. At shortstop, junior David Laylock returns after hitting .368 last season. Laylock is a two-year letterwinner in the Grove City infield. Fellow junior Brandon Gresh took over as Grove City’s starter at third base last year. He could shift over to second base to fill that vacancy. Versatile sophomore Drew Landis will likely see time at second, shortstop and third base this year. Landis cracked 11 doubles last season and started all 36 games as a rookie. Junior catcher Andy Fritz emerged in 2015 by hitting .473. He is expected to be an integral part of the Grove City offense this season.

Senior Travis Royer will compete for time at third base as well as at designated hitter. Sophomore second baseman Cameron Smail is also in the infield mix. Behind the plate, junior Andy Fritz returns for his second season as the starter after hitting a teamleading .473 in 29 games last year. Fritz also led the team in on-base percentage and ranked second to Waugaman in slugging percentage. A Second Team All-PAC selection last year, Fritz will likely be a key cog in the middle of the batting order this season. OUTFIELD Grove City returns two starters in the outfield – junior right fielder Nolan Myers and sophomore center fielder Tyler Graham. Myers has been a fixture in right field since the start of his freshman season and hit .366 in 2015. He could be penciled in at the top of the lineup or in the middle of the order. Graham led Grove City in runs and stolen bases last year and his speed will again be a major factor on both offense and defense again this season.

Sophomore Drew Landis started all 36 games in 2015. He will look to maintain a starting spot this spring.

BASEBALL 2016

2016 SEASON PREVIEW

Junior Cameron Lawson made seven starts last season and will look to remain a key member of Grove City’s starting rotation in 2016.

Senior Travis Royer will look to earn a full-time spot at either designated hitter or the infield in 2016. He is a two-year letterwinner for the Wolverines.

Junior Nolan Myers is a two-year starter in right field for Grove City. Myers could also see time on the mound in 2016.

5

SEASON PREVIEW

He will likely hit leadoff or in the No. 9 spot to best utilize his skill set. Several candidates are vying for time in left field, including a handful of newcomers. Travis Royer is the top candidate to be the DH. Fritz could DH when not catching. PITCHING While Grove City has few questions regarding its position players, the pitching staff remains somewhat of a puzzle entering the season. Junior Cameron Lawson emerged as one of the Wolverines’ rotation mainstays last year, going 3-3 in seven starts. Classmate Ben Finlan has made eight starts in each of his first two seasons and will look to again be a key member of the starting rotation. Senior Ryan Gallagher made a team-high 19 relief appearances in 2015 but is a strong candidate to join the starting rotation this year. He made four starts as a sophomore. Landis and junior left-hander Cedric Hils are also expected to challenge for roles in the pitching staff this season. Myers, senior Kenny Saltsman and several newcomers could comprise the bullpen.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

2015 IN REVIEW

2015 IN REVIEW In 2015, the Grove City College baseball team continued to set the foundation for greater successes as the Wolverines posted a five-win improvement over the previous season. Numerous players stepped to the forefront for Grove City during the 2015 campaign. Sophomore catcher Andy Fritz closed the season on a Grove Cityrecord 23-game hitting streak and won the Presidents’ Athletic Conference batting title with a .473 average. Sophomore first baseman Matt Waugaman set a new Grove City record for home runs by a left-handed hitter with six round-trippers. He also drove in a teamhigh 25 runs. Both Fritz and Waugaman earned Second Team All-PAC recognition from the league’s head coaches after the season. Grove City’s four-man senior class also made notable contributions throughout the season. Pitcher Mason Stephens led a young starting rotation with four wins while also averaging nearly a strikeout per inning. Senior reliever Chris Curran made 12 appearances for Grove City, which ranked third on the squad. Senior Josh Hodges made 32 starts while solidifying the Wolverine infield at second base. Meanwhile, senior Reese Swatsworth took over as Grove City’s regular DH and hit a career-best .317 in 21 games.

Senior second baseman Josh Hodges made 32 starts for Grove City in 2015.

HALL

OF

FAME

Seven men associated with Grove City baseball have been inducted into the College’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Ron Plano ‘60

Todd Alexander ’64

Todd Alexander earned 10 letters in three sports at Grove City College from 1960-64. Alexander’s versatility came to the forefront on the baseball diamond as a center fielder and pitcher. The right arm that earned him two letters as a track thrower also served him well on the mound as he averaged a strikeout per inning during his career. As a senior, Alexander led Grove City in runs, home runs and total bases. He also led the pitching staff with a 1.48 earned run average. His combination of tools caught the eyes of major league scouts and following college, he spent one year in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Alexander capped his career at Grove City by earning Sportsman of the Year as a senior in 1964.

New Castle’s Ron Plano played a pivotal role in the rebirth of football and the return of baseball at Grove City from 1956 to 1960. Plano helped aid the return of baseball at the College. Grove City resumed play in 1959 and Plano led the team in wins, strikeouts and earned run average. As a senior, Plano led Grove City in hitting, home runs, runs batted in and ERA. He earned All-West Penn.

Steve Shilling ‘93

Jack Behringer

A native of Defiance, Ohio, R. Jack Behringer served as Grove City College’s athletic director for 40 years. He resurrected the College’s baseball program in 1959 and coached the team until 1988, finishing with 236 wins. Behringer succeeded Robert Thorn as athletic director in 1957. He helped engineer the College’s entrance into the Presidents’ Athletic Conference in 1984. He retired September 1, 1996 and passed away October 5, 2011.

Larry Sawyer ‘70

Larry Sawyer earned four letters as a pitcher and outfielder from 1967 to 1970. Sawyer graduated as Grove City’s career leader with 17 victories, 185 innings pitched, 139 strikeouts and 25 games started. His 23 career complete games remain a Grove City record. He posted a 1.19 earned run average and also picked off 18 runners in 1969. Sawyer earned All-District recognition and participated in the Tri-State All-Star Game at Forbes Field following the 1969 and 1970 seasons.

Bart Niemeyer ‘62

Peters Township (Pa.) High School product Bart Niemeyer excelled in both baseball and basketball at Grove City College from 1958 to 1962. Grove City reactivated varsity baseball in 1959 and Niemeyer earned three letters at third base for head coach Jack Behringer. After his junior year, Niemeyer received ODK’s Sportsman of the Year. In basketball, Niemeyer led Grove City in both scoring and rebounding in his junior and senior seasons and earned All-West Penn Conference. He served as team captain both years and graduated as the second all-time leading scorer with 1,145 points.

Michael Zeigler ‘68

Mike Zeigler starred in football and baseball at Grove City between 1964-67 and earned the West Penn Conference’s Most Valuable Player in both sports during the 1966-67 year. As a pitcher-infielder for the Wolverines, Zeigler posted a career 8-4 mark with a 2.37 earned run average on the mound. In 96 career innings, he surrendered just 74 hits. He fired a no-hitter against West Penn rival Geneva during his sophomore season. He then hit .375 as a senior shortstop, earning conference “Player of the Year” distinction.

As a junior in 1992, he established a new school record by posting a .919 slugging percentage. He led the conference with seven home runs and 32 runs batted in during the 1993 season while also hitting .397. Shilling capped his career by earning CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.

ABOUT

THE

PAC

this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics, with academics at the center of each member’s philosophy. In 2012, the PAC Presidents’ Council added Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University as affiliate members in the sport of football beginning with the 2014 season. The PAC crowns league champions and awards all-conference honors in its 21 championship sports. Head coaches determine all-PAC squads for all team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. The PAC, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Grove City women and Waynesburg men captured the 2014-15 Trophies. Last year, the conference named 935 of its studentathletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who earn a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.

PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), built on the basic belief that an athletic program is an integral part of college life, but not an entity in itself, looks back on sixty years of growth and ahead to years of continued academic and athletic excellence. Formally organized in 1955 by Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Case Institute of Technology, and Wayne State University, the PAC was the result of a realization that college athletics, despite numerous virtues for the individual and the institution, were gradually becoming a financial and academic burden. If athletics were to be continued, action had to be taken to place the program on its proper level. This included the premise that benefits of participation should be provided to as many students as possible. Currently comprised of 10 select private institutions – Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College – the PAC remains a unique organization in

ABOUT GROVE CITY COLLEGE

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

ABOUT

The beautifully landscaped campus of Grove City College stretches over 150 acres and includes 28 neo-Gothic buildings. It is considered one of the loveliest in the nation. While the College has changed to meet the needs of the society it serves, its basic philosophy has remained unchanged since its founding in 1876. It is a Christian, liberal arts institution, dedicated to the principle of providing the highest quality education at the lowest possible cost. Wishing to remain truly independent and to retain its distinctive qualities as a private school governed by private citizens (trustees), it is one of few colleges in the country that does not accept federal funds. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but not narrowly denominational, the College believes that to be well-educated a student should be exposed to the central ideas of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Grove City College offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, sciences, engineering, business, and music and is distinguished as a national leader in education. Grove City’s programs in electrical and mechanical engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission Board of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The “big business school curriculum” prepares students for today’s global business reality. An extensive variety of internship opportunities are provided across the curriculum. Grove City College wants its students to be prepared in this age of mobile information technology. Each entering freshman receives a tablet computer which is his or hers to keep upon graduation with a four-year degree. This is part of the Information Technology Initiative, a total program integrating technology across the curriculum.

PROGRAMS AND MAJORS

Grove City College’s Breen Student Union

The College believes that its student body has a unique mix of talents and abilities. Its Career Services program helps students identify those key assets during the first year and then builds a four-year strategy to help them pursue a satisfying career. Personal counseling, professional speakers, databases, alumni contacts, summer internships, corporate visits, employer presentations and more are incorporated into the career preparation experience. Grove City follows the semester calendar plan, in addition to offering two-week sessions in January and May. Most of the 2,500 students live in separate men’s and women’s dormitories. The rest are local commuters or married students. A full program of cultural, professional, athletic and social activities is offered, including 19 intercollegiate varsity athletic teams. Grove City, a town of 8,100 people, is located 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. It is located near Interstates 79 and 80 and has a municipal airport.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES All 21 of Grove City College’s intercollegiate varsity athletic teams utilize the College’s superior facilities for competition, practices and off-season training and conditioning. Grove City’s athletic facilities have undergone numerous renovations and improvements in recent years, with more upgrades scheduled in the immediate future. On lower campus, Robert E. Thorn Field is home to the College’s football and track and field teams. The College installed CSTurf at Robert E. Thorn Field. CSTurf is a synthetic playing surface that features polyethylene LSR grass fibers and a rubber infill system. The College also installed lights and resurfaced the 8-lane track around the field. Grove City also reconfigured its setup for track meets during these renovations. In 2011, the College installed a new stateof-the-art scoreboard and new bleachers on the visitors’ side at Thorn Field. These upgrades benefit the entire campus community as the complex is used by both the College’s club sports teams and its intramural program, along with the varsity teams. The track is also available for use by recreational walkers and joggers. The complex also features 10 all-weather tennis courts next to the stadium. Phillips Field House, located at the north end of the complex, features several locker rooms, an athletic training room, meeting rooms and coaches’ offices. It is used by the football, track and tennis programs throughout the academic year. The Physical Learning Center (PLC) houses the Grove City College Arena, home to the College’s basketball and volleyball programs. In summer 2012, the College renovated the Arena by installing new lighting and a new playing floor.

The home of Grove City’s football and track and field teams, Robert E. Thorn Field has received numerous renovations in recent years.

The James E. Longnecker Pool is one of the nation’s premier small-college venues for both swimming and diving and water polo.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

In recent years, the Arena has also received new scoreboards and scorers’ tables. In addition, the PLC features the James E. Longnecker Pool, one of the premier aquatic facilities in the region. Each year, Grove City hosts the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the state-of-the-art facility. In 2015, the College also hosted the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships at the James E. Longnecker Pool. The PLC also features a second pool, the Recreational Pool, which is used by members of the College community year-round. A fitness room featuring aerobic and Cybex equipment and a separate weight room with free and mechanized weights are also keystone areas of the facility. The PLC also features six racquetball/handball courts as well as two adjacent intramural rooms. The intramural rooms feature four basketball courts, four indoor tennis courts, four volleyball courts, an indoor track and two indoor jumping pits. The College installed new synthetic flooring and several new electronic scoreboards throughout the intramural rooms. The Physical Learning Center houses the athletic training room, locker rooms and offices for coaches and physical education faculty. The College recently constructed a new office suite for coaches and athletic administration, while also incorporating its Athletic Hall of Fame area. Grove City’s outdoor athletic facilities have also received numerous upgrades in recent years. The varsity soccer field, College Field, received a new press box during the summer of 2007. Meanwhile, Grove City’s baseball and softball facilities recently received major facelifts as new dugouts, new fencing and electronic scoreboards were installed on both fields.
