THE JAMES E. LONGNECKER COMPETITON POOL

JAMES E. LONGNECKER POOL

The James E. Longnecker Competition Pool is one of the nation’s top small-college aquatic facilities. The 8-lane facility is regarded as one of the fastest pools in the region and is reserved solely for use by the College’s swimming and diving and water polo athletes. The Pool features two one-meter diving boards and one three-meter board as well as five Power Rack stations. A newly-installed eight-lane electronic Daktronics timing system is integrated into the pool and scoreboard. The shallow end of the Pool is seven feet; thus the facility is able to host several Collegiate Water Polo Association events that are restricted from “shallow-deep” pools. Since 2000, Grove City College has hosted several CWPA championship events, including the 2015 CWPA Division III Championships. The James E. Longnecker Competition Pool is 25 yards in length and 56 feet wide. It holds 408,913 gallons of water. The seating capacity of the Pool area is approximately 400. The Pool has been home to the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships since 1990.

DIVING COACH TAMMY FRITZ Tammy Fritz is in her 13th season as the diving coach at Grove City College. Grove City’s diving corps has become one of the region’s elite under Fritz’s guidance. She will work with a relatively young diving squad this winter. In 2014, Grove City placed three men in the top eight in 1-meter diving at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships. Junior Richie Klimek took third in both 1- and 3-meter diving and classmate Karter Gagliardo finished fourth in both events. In 2010, diver Kyle Grubbs provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships while setting a new school record in 1-meter diving. He earned the conference’s Most Valuable Diver award for the 2009-10 season and Fritz received the conference’s Men’s Diving Coach of the Year honor. In 2007, Fritz helped junior Joe Riddell provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships. Riddell and Grubbs placed 1-2 in the PAC Championships in 2007-08. Prior to joining the Grove City staff, Fritz worked as the diving coach at Chartiers Valley High School in Bridgeville, Pa. for two seasons. Fritz also has 14 years of experience coaching gymnastics at various age levels. Fritz is in her 13th year as an English teacher at Grove City High School. She also taught English for eight years at Chartiers Valley. Fritz graduated from Washington & Jefferson in 1992. In July 2002, she completed her master’s degree in education from Duquesne University. She lives in Slippery Rock with her husband, Dave, daughters Emily and Mary, and sons Hayden and Harrison.

Alyssa Hunt enters her second season as assistant men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach at Grove City College. In her first season at Grove City, she helped the men’s team place second in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference while aiding the women’s program in its drive to the conference title. Hunt is also Grove City’s head women’s water polo coach. In 2015, she guided a youthful Wolverine squad to a 7-11 mark, including a fourth-place finish at the season-ending Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships. She came to Grove City in 2014 after spending last five years at California Baptist University. She earned four letters as a member of the Cal Baptist women’s water polo team from 2010 to 2014, helping CBU to a 97-50 aggregate record and recording 70 career goals and 110 career assists during her four seasons of play (2010-12, 2014). Hunt graduated summa cum laude from Cal Baptist in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and earned her master’s degree in kinesiology at CBU in 2014.

ASSISTANT COACH LARISSA CASSANO Larissa Cassano is in her fourth season as an assistant men’s and women’s swimming coach at Grove City College. She joined the coaching staff prior to the 2012-13 season after a four-year career with the College’s women’s swimming and diving program. During her first three seasons as an assistant coach, Cassano has helped the men’s program to the 2014 Presidents’ Athletic Conference title along with conference runner-up honors in both 2013 and 2015. In addition, she helped direct the women’s squad to conference titles in each of the last three seasons. Cassano earned four letters as a butterflier for the Wolverines and helped Grove City earn four consecutive titles. She concluded her career fourth on Grove City’s all-time list in the 200 butterfly. She competed in the finals of the 200 butterfly at the conference championships in each of her four seasons. A Peters Township High School graduate, Cassano earned a bachelor of science in biology and exercise science from Grove City in 2012. She now lives in Grove City.

SEASON PREVIEW

SEASON PREVIEW The Grove City College men’s swimming and diving team aims to return to the top of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference this winter after posting a strong second-place finish in the league last season. Grove City returns 11 lettermen from last season as the Wolverines pursue the program’s seventh conference title in a nine-year span. Head coach Dave Fritz, now in his 14th season, will count on four seniors for both leadership and strong performances this year. Senior Jordan Dehli provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in the 50 free last year and will lead the Wolverines in the sprint events. Dehli is a three-year letterman who will also bolster Grove City in the backstroke. Fellow three-year letterwinner Tim Bergquist will help lead Grove City in the breaststroke. Bergquist posted top 10 finishes in both breaststroke events at last year’s conference championships and is also one of the Wolverines’ top returnees in the individual medley. Senior Nick Wargo, also a three-year letterman, returns in the backstroke and individual medley. Meanwhile, versatile two-year letterman Josh Blasdell is back in the butterfly and backstroke. A quintet of juniors return for Grove City this season. Letterman Josiah Vehrs emerged in 2014-15 and helped the Wolverines win the conference title in the 800 free relay. A First Team All-PAC selection last year, Vehrs will look to again be a key contributor in the freestyle events this year. Second-year junior Andrew Gonzalez will challenge for a regular spot in the lineup after making notable strides during his rookie season last year. Three sophomore lettermen also return for Grove City this winter in diver Samuel Archibald, butterflier Brett Gwynn and freestyle performer Andrew Kisak. Archibald capped his rookie season by taking sixth place in 1-meter diving at the conference championships last year. 2014-15 REVIEW

2014-15 SEASON REVIEW The 2014-15 season proved to be one of transition for the Grove City College men’s swimming and diving program. After winning six Presidents’ Athletic Conference titles in a seven-year span, graduation had claimed numerous standouts. However, those departures opened the door for a new generation of Grove City standouts to continue the program’s proud tradition. The youthful Wolverines capped the season by posting a strong second-place finish at the conference championships, held February 12-14, 2015 at Grove City’s James E. Longnecker Pool. Grove City crowned conference champions in five events at the three-day event. Sophomore Jeremy Kim earned two individual titles, taking the 200 butterfly and the 500 free. Kim provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in the 200 butterfly with his winning time of 1 minute, 52.77 seconds. Kim also set a Grove City record in the 500 with a time of 4:38.12. Kim, Josiah Vehrs, Jim Bossert and Drew Nosbisch won the 800 free relay in 6:55.69. That marked one of two Grove City’s relay victories at the Championships. Grove City’s 200 free relay, anchored by junior Jordan Dehli and senior Caleb McKusick, opened the meet with a winning time of 1:24.10. Bossert added a victory in the 200 individual medley to punctuate his final season at Grove City. Dehli also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 50 free with a time of 50.77 seconds. Following the season, Bossert, Dehli, Kim, Nosbisch and Vehrs all earned First Team All-PAC honors.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

PROGRAM HISTORY

PROGRAM HISTORY Few swimming and diving programs can match the tradition of excellence that has developed at Grove City College since the program’s 1937 inception. With 58 all-time NCAA All-Americans, five national champions, 574 victories and 61 straight winning seasons, one can see that success is a way of life at Grove City. Yet, numbers alone do not tell the story of the Grove City men’s swimming and diving program. The program has grown from humble beginnings into one of the nation’s finest over the past 70-plus years. Intercollegiate swimming and diving at Grove City College began during the 1937-38 academic year. During the program’s first five seasons, Grove City managed just eight total wins. World War II interrupted the program for four seasons but Grove City continued to gain traction. In 1950, the Wolverines went 5-6. Two years later, head coach Jim Loveless led Grove City to its first winning season with a 6-4 mark. That season began Grove City’s current run of 59 straight winning seasons. Loveless coached the team until 1954, when Russ Weider took over. In his one season as head coach, Weider led Grove City to a 9-1 record and the school’s first Penn-Ohio championship. Philip Sedgley coached the team to an 18-2 mark and two Penn-Ohio runner-up finishes from 1955-57. Following that season, Grove City hired a coach who would make an immeasurable impact on the swimming and diving program: Jim Longnecker. In Longnecker’s first year as head coach, 1957-58, the Wolverines went 6-5. That season, the program produced the first of its 58 all-time All-Americans as Ubbo van der Valk produced the eighth-fastest time in the nation in the 100-yard breaststroke. By 1962, Grove City emerged as the region’s preeminent program as the Wolverines went 12-0 and won the Penn-Ohio meet. That season began a run of seven straight league titles for Grove City. In 1964, Grove City hosted the first-ever NCAA College Division Swimming and Diving Championships. Grove City placed ninth in that inaugural meet. Unfortu-

Legendary head coach Jim Longnecker (left) and Ubbo van der Valk (right), Grove City’s first swimming AllAmerican. nately, it would be the last time Grove City participated in the national championships for some time. Following that year, the College banned its teams from participating in postseason competition. Despite a 33-9 dual-meet record and four PennOhio titles over the next four years, Grove City did not compete in the national meet, preventing several standouts from earning NCAA All-America honors. Grove City returned to the NCAA Championships in 1969, finishing 36th nationally. In 1975, after a 12-1 dual-meet record, Grove City took 13th at the inaugural Division III Championships. That marked the first of five top-20 national finishes for Grove City in the 1970s. Six years later, Grove City produced its first national champion as diver Chris Van De Mark swept both the 1- and 3-meter diving titles at the 1981 NCAA meet. In 1982, Van De Mark successfully defended his 1-meter title and earned runner-up in 3-meter diving after helping the team to a 12-0 dual-meet mark. The next year, Dan Young won the NCAA 1-meter diving title and in 1984, Clark Johnson captured the 3-meter diving national title. Grove City began competition in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference in 1984-85 and quickly emerged as the league’s dominant program by winning eight of 11 PAC titles.

Grove City College’s swimming program began in 193738 as the inaugural team took to the pool. 12

PROGRAM HISTORY pion as he won the NCAA title in the 100 free. In 2007, Courage defended his national title while teammate Tim Whitbeck won the NCAA title in the 50 free. Grove City returned to the top of the conference in 2008 as the Wolverines won their first PAC title since 2004. In 2009, Grove City repeated as conference champion and finished with a 12-2 dual-meet record. Eleven Wolverine swimmers earned NCAA All-America honors in helping Grove City finish sixth at the NCAA meet. Courage earned his third national title and set a new national mark in the 100 free with a time of 43.60. Grove City won its third straight league title in 2010 and finished with an 11-2 overall record. The Wolverines then won their fourth consecutive conference title in 2011 and finished with a 10-4 dual-meet mark. Grove City extended its conference title streak to five in 2012 as the Wolverines successfully defended their crown. The Wolverines placed second in the conference in 2013 but rebounded in 2014 to capture the program’s 26th all-time conference championship.

The Wolverines went 10-0 in 1986-87, then assembled 40 straight victories from 1993-96. Grove City went undefeated in 1993-94, 1994-95 and 1995-96. In Longnecker’s final season, 1996-97, Grove City went 10-2. Longnecker retired after 40 seasons with 366 wins, 44 All-Americans and 15 league titles to his credit. Following the 1997 season, 1983 Grove City grad Keith Bullion took over as head coach. During Bullion’s five years as head coach, Grove City won three league titles and went 33-17 overall. A new era began in 2002 as 1994 alum Dave Fritz replaced Bullion as head coach. In 2006, Caleb Courage became Grove City’s first men’s swimming national cham-

PROGRAM HISTORY Caleb Courage won three national titles in the 100 freestyle and earned 18 career All-America honors. He later qualified for the United States Olympic Trials.

Diver Chris Van De Mark won two national titles in 1981 and won the 1-meter NCAA title in 1982.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

ABOUT THE PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

ABOUT

THE

The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), built on the basic belief that an athletic program is an integral part of college life, but not an entity in itself, looks back on sixty years of growth and ahead to years of continued academic and athletic excellence. Formally organized in 1955 by Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Case Institute of Technology, and Wayne State University, the PAC was the result of a realization that college athletics, despite numerous virtues for the individual and the institution, were gradually becoming a financial and academic burden. If athletics were to be continued, action had to be taken to place the program on its proper level. This included the premise that benefits of participation should be provided to as many students as possible. Currently comprised of 10 select private institutions – Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College – the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics, with academics at the center of each member’s philosophy. In 2012, the PAC Presidents’ Council added Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University as affiliate members in the sport of football beginning with the 2014 season. The PAC crowns league champions and awards allconference honors in its 21 championship sports. Head coaches determine all-PAC squads for all team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. The PAC, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Grove City women and Waynesburg men captured the 2014-15 Trophies. Last year, the conference named 935 of its studentathletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who earn a term gradepoint average of 3.60 or above.

ABOUT GROVE CITY COLLEGE

ABOUT

The beautifully landscaped campus of Grove City College stretches over 150 acres and includes 28 neo-Gothic buildings. It is considered one of the loveliest in the nation. While the College has changed to meet the needs of the society it serves, its basic philosophy has remained unchanged since its founding in 1876. It is a Christian, liberal arts institution, dedicated to the principle of providing the highest quality education at the lowest possible cost. Wishing to remain truly independent and to retain its distinctive qualities as a private school governed by private citizens (trustees), it is one of few colleges in the country that does not accept federal funds. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but not narrowly denominational, the College believes that to be well-educated a student should be exposed to the central ideas of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Grove City College offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, sciences, engineering, business, and music and is distinguished as a national leader in education. Grove City’s programs in electrical and mechanical engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission Board of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The “big business school curriculum” prepares students for today’s global business reality. An extensive variety of internship opportunities are provided across the curriculum. Grove City College wants its students to be prepared in this age of mobile information technology. Each entering freshman receives a tablet computer which is his or hers to keep upon graduation with a four-year degree. This is part of the Information Technology Initiative, a total program integrating technology across the curriculum.

PROGRAMS AND MAJORS

Grove City College’s Breen Student Union

The College believes that its student body has a unique mix of talents and abilities. Its Career Services program helps students identify those key assets during the first year and then builds a four-year strategy to help them pursue a satisfying career. Personal counseling, professional speakers, databases, alumni contacts, summer internships, corporate visits, employer presentations and more are incorporated into the career preparation experience. Grove City follows the semester calendar plan, in addition to offering two-week sessions in January and May. Most of the 2,500 students live in separate men’s and women’s dormitories. The rest are local commuters or married students. A full program of cultural, professional, athletic and social activities is offered, including 19 intercollegiate varsity athletic teams. Grove City, a town of 8,100 people, is located 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. It is located near Interstates 79 and 80 and has a municipal airport.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

All 21 of Grove City College’s intercollegiate varsity athletic teams utilize the College’s superior facilities for competition, practices and off-season training and conditioning. Grove City’s athletic facilities have undergone numerous renovations and improvements in recent years, with more upgrades scheduled in the immediate future. On lower campus, Robert E. Thorn Field is home to the College’s football and track and field teams. The College installed CSTurf at Robert E. Thorn Field. CSTurf is a synthetic playing surface that features polyethylene LSR grass fibers and a rubber infill system. The College also installed lights and resurfaced the 8-lane track around the field. Grove City also reconfigured its setup for track meets during these renovations. In 2011, the College installed a new stateof-the-art scoreboard and new bleachers on the visitors’ side at Thorn Field. These upgrades benefit the entire campus community as the complex is used by both the College’s club sports teams and its intramural program, along with the varsity teams. The track is also available for use by recreational walkers and joggers. The complex also features 10 all-weather tennis courts next to the stadium. Phillips Field House, located at the north end of the complex, features several locker rooms, an athletic training room, meeting rooms and coaches’ offices. It is used by the football, track and tennis programs throughout the academic year. The Physical Learning Center (PLC) houses the Grove City College Arena, home to the College’s basketball and volleyball programs. In summer 2012, the College renovated the Arena by installing new lighting and a new playing floor. In recent years, the Arena has also received new scoreboards and scorers’ tables.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

In addition, the PLC features the James E. Longnecker Pool, one of the premier aquatic facilities in the region. Each year, Grove City hosts the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the state-of-the-art facility. In 2015, the College also hosted the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships at the James E. Longnecker Pool. The PLC also features a second pool, the Recreational Pool, which is used by members of the College community year-round. A fitness room featuring aerobic and Cybex equipment and a separate weight room with free and mechanized weights are also keystone areas of the facility. The PLC also features six racquetball/handball courts as well as two adjacent intramural rooms. The intramural rooms feature four basketball courts, four indoor tennis courts, four volleyball courts, an indoor track and two indoor jumping pits. The College installed new synthetic flooring and several new electronic scoreboards throughout the intramural rooms. The Physical Learning Center houses the athletic training room, locker rooms and offices for coaches and physical education faculty. The College recently constructed a new office suite for coaches and athletic administration, while also incorporating its Athletic Hall of Fame area. Grove City’s outdoor athletic facilities have also received numerous upgrades in recent years. The varsity soccer field, College Field, received a new press box during the summer of 2007. Meanwhile, Grove City’s baseball and softball facilities recently received major facelifts as new dugouts, new fencing and electronic scoreboards were installed on both fields.
