GROVE CITY COLLEGE
COACHING STAFF
HEAD COACH TODD GIBSON Todd Gibson is in his third season as Grove City College’s head men’s and women’s track and field coach. He is looking to direct Grove City’s tradition-filled programs back to the top of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Last season, Grove City’s men took third in the conference and the women posted a strong fourth-place finish in the tightly-packed team standings. Sophomore John Green set a new school record in the 400 dash while on the women’s side, sophomore Sarah Cessar set a new Grove City mark in the 3000-meter steeplechase. In July 2010, Gibson joined the Department of Physical Education and Athletics as a full-time assistant professor of physical education and exercise science and head track and field coach. A native of Champion, Ohio, Gibson spent the 2009 and 2010 seasons as an assistant men’s and women’s track and field coach at the College prior to being promoted to head coach. He worked primarily with Grove City’s distance runners and guided eight athletes to Presidents’ Athletic Conference titles in that span. The men’s program captured the 2009 conference crown and earned second place in 2010. Four distance runners set new school records under Gibson's tutelage. In 2009, Derek Kruse set a new standard in the 1,500 and Dan Spaulding broke the school mark in the 10,000. Kruse also earned Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America following the 2010 season. On the women’s side, Kristen Carter qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in the 10,000-meter run in 2009. In 2010, Kate McRoberts broke a 10-year old school record in the 3,000-meter run and distance standout Emily Pierce captured the conference’s Most Valuable Performer award. In 2011, Wolverine athletes continued to excel within the conference. Grove City performers won six conference titles and distance ace Sara Fisher earned the league’s Track MVP award. A 2002 Grove City graduate, Gibson is in his ninth season as an assistant football coach at the College. He works specifically with the outside linebackers while also working as the program’s strength and conditioning coordinator. As a studentathlete at Grove City, he started for two seasons at split end in football from 1998 to 2001 and led the team in receiving as a senior. He helped the Wolverines to the conference title in 1998 and runner-up finishes in both 1999 and 2000. Gibson graduated from Grove City with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He also owns a bachelor’s degree in integrated social studies/secondary education from Youngstown State. In 2006, he completed his master’s degree in exercise science from California University of Pennsylvania. Gibson earmed his Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist credential through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Prior to taking over the sprint squad, Chinn coached Grove City’s throwers. Grove City throwers won nine conference titles under Chinn’s guidance. In 2009, Matt Six won the PAC title in the discus and Matt Ridge took first in the shot put. Both athletes successfully defended their respective conference title in 2010 and Six also broke a 24-year old school record in the discus with a throw of 161 feet, 4 inches. Grove City’s throwers accumulated 42 total team points at the 2010 conference championships. The 2009 throwing squad accumulated 51 team points on the men’s side. In 2007, Bob Perri earned NCAA Division III All-America honors in the shot put by placing eighth at the NCAA Championships. Chinn is also an assistant football coach at Grove City. He joined the Grove City athletic department in 2003 after spending six years -- including four as head football coach -at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Ill. GROVE CITY COLLEGE
2012 REVIEW
2012 MEN’S SEASON REVIEW Since taking over as Grove City College head track and field coach, Todd Gibson's goal has been to direct the Wolverine programs back to the top of the Presidents' Athletic Conference. In 2012, the Grove City men's squad made great strides toward that objective. Grove City concluded the 2012 regular season by placing third at the nine-team conference championships April 28 in Beaver Falls, Pa. The Wolverines' performance at the conference championships highlighted the depth and balance that Grove City displayed throughout the 2012 season. Seventeen Grove City athletes scored points at the season-ending meet, a trend that started in the season's infancy. Grove City opened the 2012 season March 20 with an unscored invitational at the Wolverines' Robert E. Thorn Field. Freshman Ethan Witmer made his collegiate debut by sweeping both hurdle events for Grove City while the Wolverines' 400- and 3200-meter relay teams both captured runner-up honors. Four days later, the Wolverines placed second out of seven Division III programs - and sixth out of 16 overall teams -- at Wheeling Jesuit University's Bill Van Horne Invitational. Senior David Ferreira earned second in the triple jump to lead the Wolverines. Grove City returned to action one week later at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational. Sophomore John Green led the Wolverines at the unscored meet by winning the 400 hurdles.
Ethan Witmer made an immediate impact as a rookie in 2012, bolstering Grove City in the hurdle events. Following Easter Break, the Wolverines captured third in the 14-team team Westminster Invitational April 15 in New Wilmington, Pa. Sophomore Alec Schultz won the 10,000, edging junior teammate Francis Ridge. Ferreira earned second in the triple jump while Arleigh McRae captured second in the 1500. Grove City continued its preparation for the conference championships by competing in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Quad Meet in Beaver Falls April 17. Ferreira won the long and triple jumps for Grove City while sophomore Mark Talbott won the 5000 and Ben Lutz took the steeplechase. Green (400) and Witmer (high hurdles) also notched victories, helping Grove City take second with 169 team points. McRae won the 1500 at Indiana (Pa.) University's Ed Fry Invitational April 21 in Grove City's final tuneup for the conference championships. Grove City's 400-meter relay squad of sophomore Mun Whan Cho, sophomore Andrew Ledbetter, junior Patrik Miller and Green placed third at Indiana. At the conference championships, five Grove City athletes recorded third-place finishes during the two-day meet. Green earned third in both the 400 dash and 400 hurdles. He also joined Cho, Ledbetter and Miller on the third-place 400 relay. Lutz took third in the steeplechase while McRae garnered third in the 10,000. Witmer (110 hurdles) and Ferreira (triple jump) also finished third individually in those respective events. TRACK & FIELD 2013
2012 WOMEN’S SEASON REVIEW To say that youth dominated the 2012 Grove City College women's track and field team would be extremely accurate. Fueled by an underclassman-filled roster, the 2012 Wolverines concluded the season with a strong fourth-place finish at the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships April 27-28 in Beaver Falls, Pa. Underclassmen accounted for all 103 team points, setting up Grove City for even greater success in the future. Grove City opened the 2012 season March 20 by hosting an invitational at Robert E. Thorn Field. Grove City dominated the season-opening event as eight underclass performers contributed to wins. Sophomore Sarah Cessar, sophomore Cayla Clawson, freshman Caroline Kimpel and junior Ella Smith combined for a win in the 3200 relay. Junior Anna Dunsworth won the 1500, junior Mary Kate Breese captured the 3000 and sophomore Laurel Skorup won the steeplechase, completing a sweep of the distance events. Freshman Mara Womer made her collegiate debut by winning the 400 hurdles. The Wolverines opened the road portion of the schedule four days later at Wheeling Jesuit's Bill Van Horne Invitational, where Grove City took 12th in a 19-team field that featured numerous scholarship-level programs. Skorup set a new school record in the steeplechase with a runner-up time of 11:52.28 to help lead the Wolverine effort. One week later, Cessar broke Skorup's steeplechase standard at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational as she
Mara Womer quickly emerged as an integral part of Grove City’s hurdle and relay corps in 2012.
Ella Smith earned runner-up in both the 5000 and 10,000 at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships. 11

Smith prevailed in the 1500 and Breese won the 5000. With the conference championships looming on the horizon, the Wolverines made their final preparations for that meet by competing in Indiana (Pa.) University's Ed Fry Invitational April 21. Smith helped lead Grove City by taking second in the 5000, one spot ahead of Breese. Freshman Ellie Stoffer led Grove City in the field by earning fourth in the discus. At the conference championships April 27-28, Smith earned runner-up honors in both the 5000 and 10,000 while Cessar captured second in the steeplechase. ABOUT
THE
PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
ABOUT THE PAC Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high-pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. During the 2005-06 academic year, Chatham, Geneva and Saint Vincent all joined the PAC. Chatham competed for PAC championships for the first time during the 2007-08 academic year. Saint Vincent first competed for conference titles in 201011. Geneva became eligible for conference titles in 2011-12. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. AllConference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select all-league squads for all team sports, while in individual sports such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s AllSports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in conference competition. W&J won the Men’s All-Sports Trophy in 2011-12 and Westminster won the Women’s All-Sports Trophy. Grove City finished second with 114 total All-Sports points. In 2011-12, the league named 734 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who attain a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.

ABOUT GROVE CITY COLLEGE
ABOUT THE COLLEGE The beautifully landscaped campus of Grove City College stretches over 150 acres and includes 28 neoGothic buildings. It is considered one of the loveliest in the nation. While the College has changed to meet the needs of the society it serves, its basic philosophy has remained unchanged since its founding in 1876. It is a Christian, liberal arts institution, dedicated to the principle of providing the highest quality education at the lowest possible cost. Wishing to remain truly independent and to retain its distinctive qualities as a private school governed by private citizens (trustees), it is one of few colleges in the country that does not accept federal funds. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but not narrowly denominational, the College believes that to be well-educated a student should be exposed to the central ideas of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Grove City College offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, sciences, engineering, business, and music and is distinguished as a national leader in education. Grove City’s programs in electrical and mechanical engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission Board of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The “big business school curriculum” prepares students for today’s global business reality. An extensive variety of internship opportunities are provided across the curriculum. Grove City College wants its students to be prepared in this age of mobile information technology. Each entering freshman receives a tablet computer which is his or hers to keep upon graduation with a four-year degree. This is part of the Information Technology Initiative, a total program integrating technology across the curriculum.
PROGRAMS AND MAJORS
Grove City College’s Breen Student Union
The College believes that its student body has a unique mix of talents and abilities. Its Career Services program helps students identify those key assets during the first year and then builds a four-year strategy to help them pursue a satisfying career. Personal counseling, professional speakers, databases, alumni contacts, summer internships, corporate visits, employer presentations and more are incorporated into the career preparation experience. Grove City follows the semester calendar plan, in addition to offering two-week sessions in January and May. Most of the 2,500 students live in separate men’s and women’s dormitories. The rest are local commuters or married students. A full program of cultural, professional, athletic and social activities is offered, including 19 intercollegiate varsity athletic teams. Grove City, a town of 8,100 people, is located 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. It is located near Interstates 79 and 80 and has a municipal airport.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES All 19 of Grove City College’s intercollegiate varsity athletic teams utilize the College’s superior facilities for competition, practices and off-season training and conditioning. Grove City’s athletic facilities have undergone numerous renovations and improvements in recent years, with more upgrades scheduled in the immediate future. On lower campus, Robert E. Thorn Field is home to the College’s football and track and field teams. The College installed CSTurf at Robert E. Thorn Field. CSTurf is a synthetic playing surface that features polyethylene LSR grass fibers and a rubber infill system. The College also installed lights and resurfaced the 8-lane track around the field. Grove City also reconfigured its setup for track meets during these renovations. In 2011, the College installed a new state-ofthe-art scoreboard and new bleachers on the visitors’ side at Thorn Field. These upgrades benefit the entire campus community as the complex is used by both the College’s club sports teams and its intramural program, along with the varsity teams. The track is also available for use by recreational walkers and joggers. The complex also features 10 all-weather tennis courts next to the stadium. Phillips Field House, located at the north end of the complex, features several locker rooms, an athletic training room, meeting rooms and coaches’ offices. It is used by the football, track and tennis programs throughout the academic year. The Physical Learning Center (PLC) houses the Grove City College Arena, home to the College’s basketball and volleyball programs. In summer 2012, the College renovated the Arena by installing new lighting and a new playing floor. In recent years, the Arena has also received new scoreboards and scorers’ tables.

In 2012, the College also hosted the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships at the James E. Longnecker Pool. The PLC also features a second pool, the Recreational Pool, which is used by members of the College community year-round. A fitness room featuring aerobic and Cybex equipment and a separate weight room with free and mechanized weights are also keystone areas of the facility. The PLC also features six racquetball/handball courts as well as two adjacent intramural rooms. The intramural rooms each feature four basketball courts, four indoor tennis courts, four volleyball courts, an indoor track and two indoor jumping pits. The College installed new synthetic flooring and several new electronic scoreboards throughout the intramural rooms. The Physical Learning Center houses the athletic training room, locker rooms and offices for coaches and physical education faculty. The College recently constructed a new office suite for coaches and athletic administration, while also incorporating its Athletic Hall of Fame area. Grove City’s outdoor athletic facilities have also received numerous upgrades in recent years. The varsity soccer field, College Field, was expanded and re-sodded during the summer of 2005. College Field also received a new press box during the summer of 2007. Meanwhile, Grove City’s baseball and softball facilities recently received major facelifts as new dugouts, new fencing and electronic scoreboards were installed on both fields.
