General Information
Gold Coast Future Business Leaders of America invites all members and advisers to the 2011 FBLA Section Leadership Conference at West Ranch High School and Magic Mountain in Santa Clarita on Saturday, March 5, 2011. The Section Leadership Conference is the premier event for California FBLA’s Gold Coast Section and the first level of FBLA’s national business competition program. Your chapter won’t want to miss the exciting opportunities to: • • • • • •

General Information
Registration Fee: $15 per attendee ($20 if received after February 9 and before February 18 late registration deadline). Make checks payable to Gold Coast FBLA. Individual student checks are not accepted. Registration fees are not refundable. Magic Mountain:
$24 per ticket. Park admission is required for everyone attending the awards ceremony.

Registration is submitted through the online registration system. Please find the registration page on the CA FBLA website (www.cafbla.org). Registration is open now through February 9.
Mailing Materials: Please refer to page 11 for Important Dates and Deadlines. Please do not require a signature on materials sent to the Conference Committee. Proctors:
The Gold Coast Section Conference is a huge undertaking requiring many volunteers to make the event possible. Every adviser and chaperone is expected to help proctor events. Assignments will be made and advisers will be notified of their responsibilities a week before the conference. Your help is very much appreciated!
Student ID:
The provided nametags must be worn to all conference events. Student competing must show a photo STUDENT ID in order to enter the test room and compete. There is no exception to this rule. Forgotten IDs may NOT be faxed or otherwise accommodated for in any way.
Emergency Form: Please obtain Emergency Form signatures for all members attending the event. Two copies per student are needed – one to submit at registration and one for the adviser to keep. You may use the emergency medical form available online at www.cafbla.org (document library page) or your school district’s form.

Competitive Events
FBLA FORMAT GUIDE The FBLA Format Guide is to be used as a guide for all skill events that require word processing documents. This guide is available online at www.cafbla.org. TRANSCRIPTS The following events require transcripts: • Accounting I • Word Processing I The following events require proof of grade level: • Business Math • Creed Contest • FBLA Principles and Procedures • Introduction to Business • Introduction to Business Communication • Introduction to Technology Concepts • Public Speaking I Submit all transcripts to Eric To, Gold Coast Section Co-Director by February 9. TESTING SESSIONS When taking written tests, all students from the same school must take the test at the same time. All chapters need to plan which of the two sessions their members will test and work out any conflicts. Chapters with members taking the same test in two different sessions will have all their members in that competition disqualified. Advisers of chapters with many students in multiple events should submit a grid detailing how there are no conflicts within their chapters. Email this information by February 9 to Eric To, Section Director. Materials, electronic devices, textbooks, and other resource materials may not be taken to or used during competitive events. Exceptions are clearly identified in the guidelines for each individual event. Calculators will be provided. NUMBER OF COMPETITORS The number of students from each chapter entering events that start at the section level with only a written component is based on local chapter membership as of the official date for dues, February 3. 5-49 members 50-74 members 75-100 members 101+ members

Competitive Events
ENTREPRENEURSHIP & PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE Teams must indicate the name of an alternate competitor. The alternate may substitute if one team member cannot attend the conference. If an alternate is not listed, no substitute can be made and the team will be disqualified (Entrepreneurship) or if previously with five members, compete with the permitted four members (Parliamentary Procedure). JOB INTERVIEW All materials must be submitted by February 9. Please refer to the event guidelines for specific required details regarding the number of copies, use of file folders, and paper clipping. Take extra care with these details as it impacts your score (see guidelines). PUBLIC SPEAKING I AND II Public Speaking I is open to students in grades 7-10; Public Speaking II is open to students in grades 9-12. The required materials (i.e. outlines, see guidelines) are to be turned in on the day of the conference by your adviser at registration. Proof of grade verification is necessary for Public Speaking I and is to be submitted by February 9. FUTURE BUSINESS LEADER All materials are to be submitted at registration on the day of the conference. See guidelines for additional information. FBLA IMAGE AND DRESS CODE The official California FBLA Conference re dress code may be found on the state website (www.cafbla.org). This document and many other important FBLA documents are located on the “Document Library� page. Dress code for all competitive events, workshops, and sessions held at West Ranch High School is professional attire. This will be strictly enforced. Attire for the Awards of Excellence ceremony at the Magic Moments Theater inside Magic Mountain is either professional attire or business casual attire (i.e. polo shirts). Members wearing jeans and / or non-FBLA t-shirts will not be allowed into the theater.

WHO’S WHO IN FBLA The Who’s Who in FBLA event starts at the section level. Each chapter may nominate one member (in addition to any section / state officers) from their school. One winner per section will be considered for the state winner along with the state officers. All chapter nominees will be recognized at the state conference. For more details and official form, see the California FBLA Event Guidelines in the California Awards Program and in the Conference Registration Packet (FORM F). Forms must be postmarked to the Section Director by February 3. OUTSTANDING LOCAL CHAPTER ADVISER AWARD The Outstanding Local Chapter Adviser award starts at the section level. Each chapter may nominate an adviser. One adviser will be selected from the Gold Coast Section for this award. The official form is available in the Conference Registration Packet (FORM E) and in the California Awards Program. Applications are due to the Section Director by February 3. SECTION OFFICER CAMPAIGNS Section officer candidates will be campaigning at their booths and during the opening session of the conference. Find out all about your candidates and work with your voting delegates to pick the best people for the job. The positions are Section President (State Officer application needed – postmarked by the January 31 deadline), Vice President of Membership, Vice President of Activities, Secretary-Treasurer, and Public Relations Officer. All positions are open to members returning for the 2011-2012 school year. VOTING DELEGATES Two voting delegates from each chapter will participate in the voting delegates session at the conference to elect the 2011-2012 Gold Coast Section Officer Team. Please denote your two voting delegates on the online registration forms. Only the two representatives from each chapter will be allowed into the voting session. PARADE OF PRESIDENTS AND CHAPTER PRIORITY SEATING Chapter Presidents are invited to represent their chapter on stage at the Awards of Excellence ceremony in the Parade of Presidents. Presidents are to report to the main entrance of the Magic Moments Theater at 5:00 pm. Arrive on time! Late arrivals will be at a disadvantage in the “priority seating” lottery. Presidents who arrive on time will have the first chance to save the best seats in the theater. GOLD COAST’S FBLA ALL-STARS Gold Coast is hosting its annual FBLA All-Stars competition. The competition is open to FBLA students that want to strut their business stuff to fight for the title of 2011 Gold Coast Section FBLA All-Star. One contestant per chapter may apply. Applications and guidelines are available in the Conference Registration Packet (FORM G) and on the Gold Coast Section webpage.

CONFERENCE PROGRAM ADVISERTISMENTS AND SHOUTOUTS Get your message in the official Gold Coast Section Conference Program! From a chapter ‘shout-out’ message to a full-page advertisement, this is a great way to support Gold Coast FBLA while wishing your chapter the best at this year’s conference. Full advertisements are $100, half pages are $50, and shout-out messages are only $20. Email Section Director at goldcoastdirector@cafbla.org with your ad or message and submit the fee with your chapter registration money by February 9. MARCH OF DIMES GIFT BASKET RAFFLE A great way for chapters to contribute to the March of Dimes is to create a basket for Gold Coast’s Basket Raffle. Please drop off all baskets at the raffle table near the conference headquarters. Be sure to provide a list of all the items in the basket as well as the total cost of the items. Visit the raffle table throughout the day to buy tickets for your favorite baskets! Winners will be drawn and announced during the Awards of Excellence ceremony. Chapters, please attach a tag to your basket with a title and list of items. Helpful Basket Hints: • Have a catchy theme for your basket. Be creative! • Encourage member participation in putting together your basket. • Baskets should have an accumulated value of $20-$30 WORKSHOPS Workshops will be provided during both Leadership Achievement Sessions. Topics will be listed in the official conference program found in your registration packets on the morning of the conference. All members who are competing during a particular session must attend a workshop.

Official FBLA Dress Code
FBLA members and advisers should develop an awareness of the image one’s appearance projects. The purpose of the FBLA Conference Dress Code is to uphold the professional image of the association and its members and to prepare students for the business world. Appropriate attire is required for all attendees—advisers, members, and guests—at all general sessions, competitive events, section meetings, workshops, and other activities unless otherwise stated in the conference program. Conference name badges are part of this FBLA Conference Dress Code and must be worn for all conference functions. For safety reasons, do not wear name badges outside the school. Professional attire acceptable for official FBLA activities include: Males • Business suit with collared dress shirt, and necktie or • Sport coat, dress slacks, collared shirt, and necktie or • Dress slacks, collared shirt, and necktie. • Banded collared shirt may be worn only if sport coat or business suit is worn. • Dress shoes and socks.
Females • Business suit with blouse or • Business pantsuit with blouse or • Skirt or dress slacks with blouse or sweater or • Business dress. • Capris or gauchos with coordinating jacket/suit, worn below the knee. • Dress shoes.
Inappropriate attire for both men and women includes: • Jewelry in visible body piercing, other than ears • Denim or chambray fabric clothing of any kind, overalls, shorts, skorts, stretch or stirrup pants, exercise or bike shorts • Backless, see-through, tight-fitting, spaghetti straps, strapless, extremely short, or low-cut blouses/tops/dresses/skirts • T-shirts, Lycra, spandex, midriff tops, tank tops, bathing suits • Sandals, athletic shoes, industrial work shoes, hiking boots, bare feet, or over-the-knee boots • Athletic wear, including sneakers • Hats or flannel fabric clothing • Bolo ties • Visible foundation garments Clarification: Many women’s two-piece suits are currently designed so that they do not require a blouse. Therefore, this will be accepted. In addition, sling-back shoes, open-toe shoes, and sleeveless dresses are accepted. New fashion trends may be in style but not necessarily appropriate. The best way to operate is to avoid walking the line. If there is a doubt, select something else to wear. Be a professional.

AGREEMENT As an adviser at the FBLA Section Leadership Conference on Saturday, March 5, 2011, I agree and understand that: 1. Advisers stand in loco parentis (in place of the parent) with respect to the student during the time the student is under control of the school while attending all FBLA activities. 2. I am in full authority of my students from the time of departure to the FBLA conference through and including return from the conference. 3. I must be concerned with my measure of responsibility since I have authority—adequate supervision is a must. 4. The established conduct code must be adhered to and I am responsibility for enforcing it. 5. I am required to obtain a signed copy of the FBLA Conduct Code forms from each delegate. FBLA will collect these forms at conference registration; I am responsible for having these forms and any forms required by my school in my possession for the duration of the conference. 6. I agree to assist FBLA in ensuring that the conference experience is a strong educational opportunity for the student’s delegates. I understand that I am responsible for chaperoning and may be asked to assist with other activities. I agree to accept these assignments and carry out the necessary responsibilities. 7. Advisers and students attend conferences, field trips, etc. purely for their own benefit and advantage; thus control and liability rests with the local school and its agents. Medical Release and District Permission Forms are the responsibility of the FBLA chapter adviser. NOTE: Each school district has established their own requirements on accepted principles regarding student control on educational trips, which correlate with the accepted principles stated above.

FBLA, as an integral part of the business education program in California, offers training to students with career objectives in business and office occupations. Because individual conduct and appearance is a phase of this training, it becomes the responsibility of all persons to see that proper conduct is adhered to at all times from the time they leave home until they return home. Attendance at any FBLA sponsored activity is a special privilege. Knowing any organization is judged largely by the behavior of its individuals, the following Code of Conduct is subscribed to buy members, guests, and advisers who attend Section, State, and National events of Future Business Leaders of America. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

All chapter members attending FBLA events are expected to attend all sessions of the events. All persons shall behave in a courteous and respectful manner, refraining from language and actions that might bring discredit upon them, their school, their home, their friends, the conference, or upon the FBLA organization. Because delegates are guests using the facilities, special care should be taken to not deface or destroy any property. Any damages to any property of furnishings in the hotel rooms or buildings must be paid by the individual or chapter involved. Dress regulations established for the event shall be business attire. Conservative sportswear will be appropriate in specifically designed situations. Read conference packets for specific instructions. Student delegates shall: (1) Keep their adult advisers informed of their activities and whereabouts at all times; (2) Not use their own cars or ride in cars belonging to others during the conference, unless accompanied by an authorized adviser; (3) Not engage in dating activities with nonconference students; and (4) Not participate in hazing activities. No alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs or smoking material shall be possessed or used at any time under any circumstances on public or private properties. School district policy shall be in effect for adviser/student ratio during all FBLA activities. Identification badges are to be worn at all appropriate times. Serious misconduct shall be reported to the adviser, principal, parents, and if necessary the proper authorities. Any further disciplinary action will be determined by board action and may result in one calendar year of ineligibility. It is agreed that upon violation of the Code of Conduct, the violators may be asked to vacate withdraw from the event activities by proper FBLA authorities. Parents must be aware that under these circumstances they would be notified that their child is being sent home and it is understood that the parent will be available to pick them up. Anyone being in the willful companionship of another person violating the FBLA Code of Conduct will also be subject to disciplinary action.

The contest will be held during Opening Session, where you will be introduced with the information provided below. Each contestant will be given three (3) and only three minutes to showcase your talent, so please prepare your performance accordingly. As the conference will be running on a tight schedule, once you reach the three-minute mark, you will be asked to stop. If you wish, you may change into different attire (however appropriate) for the contest. Also, please be prepared for FBLA trivia questions as part of the contest. The winner will be chosen at the Awards of Excellence Ceremony.
