CALIFORNIA FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE NOVEMBER 23-24, 2013 HILTON ANAHEIM

KEYNOTE SPEAKER LAYMON HICKS

All teens are troubled. It goes with the territory. A part of the “passage.” There is the typical “torment” of wanting to belong, to be the same, to be liked and accepted. Is my nose too big? My height too short? My hair too long? But not everyone belonged to the Brady Brunch. Drugs. Alcohol. Violence. Stress. Depression. Add the words bullying, peer pressure and self-doubt and you’ve entered the real world drama of too many of our young people today. Laymon Hicks was not a part of “all things Brady.” His passage was not typical. Sharing his troubled teen years, surrounded by drama, battled with feelings of abandonment, lured by peer pressure into becoming a bully to his ultimate expulsion from the National Honor Society and descent into depression, Laymon puts it all on the table. What he calls his “frustrations, flops and faults” are hungrily devoured by his audience. And then digested. For whatever the details, from one degree to another, the pain is universal. They all know it. Now they are hungry for the outcome. The resolution. The road to redemption. And Laymon delivers. He tells them that the real motivation comes from within. From wanting more. From needing to do better. From believing you deserve better. From “Get up! Get out! Go get it!” From knowing “You Can!” From knowing “You’re the BOMB.com!” His own path, from troubled youth to graduating high school with a 4.0 grade point average, is the perfect ending his young audiences are waiting for. But, in fact, it’s only the beginning. Laymon attended Florida State University, attaining both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, was Student Body President, has authored four inspirational books for students, has appeared as an on-air motivational expert for the #1 Nationally Syndicated Talk Show, Maury, offered keynote addresses and workshops at more than 100 schools and student conferences for over 50,000 young people. But he doesn’t soft soap the struggle. It’s hard, with lots of setbacks along the way. But his message remains clear. Compelling. “Failure is not fatal!” Laymon promises, his energy and passion pulsing through the room, “If you had the power to try – you have the power to try again! And again! You’ve got to be positive. Because...” But they already know it, “Because I am the BOMB.com!” His message has become their reality.

Don’t forget to get your participant card stamped after each Leadership Session. Be sure to trade in your fully stamped card for a Leadership Development Institute Graduation Certificate!

CODE OF CONDUCT

California FBLA members have an excellent reputation. Your conduct at every FBLA function should make a positive contribution to extending that reputation. Listed here are rules of conduct for the Leadership Development Institute. All delegates will be expected to: 1.

Behave in a courteous and respectful manner, refraining from language and actions that might bring discredit upon themselves, their school, other delegates, advisers, or upon FBLA.

2.

Obey all local, state, and federal laws.

3.

Avoid conduct not conducive to an educational conference. Such conduct includes, but is not limited to, actions disrupting the businesslike atmosphere, association with nonconference individuals, or activities that endanger self or others (running in the general sessions, standing on chairs, using laser pointers during workshops, bodysurfing at dances, etc.).

4.

Keep your advisers informed of your activities and whereabouts at all times. Accidents, injuries, and illnesses must be reported to the local or state advisers immediately.

5.

Avoid alcoholic beverages (for those under 21 years of age) and controlled or illegal substances of any form. These items must not be used or possessed at any time, or under any circumstances. Use or possession of such substances may subject the delegate to criminal prosecution.

6.

Act as guests of the hotel and conference center. Participants must obey the rules of these facilities. The facilities have the right to ask a member or members to leave. Do not throw anything out of windows or over balconies. Do not run down hallways. Noise should be kept at a reasonable volume, especially in the hotels.

Remember there are other guests in the hotels who have rights as well. Trash (this includes pizza boxes, bottles, cans, etc.) must be placed in the proper receptacles and not left on guest room or meeting room floors. Individuals or chapters responsible for damages to any property or furnishings will be responsible for its repair or replacement. Local advisers are responsible for the supervision of delegate conduct.

DISREGARDING OR VIOLATING THE CODE OF CONDUCT Delegates who disregard or violate this code will be subject to disciplinary action, including, but not limited to, forfeiture of privileges to attend further events, confinement to your hotel room, dismissal from the conference, and being sent home at your own expense. Parents and/or guardians will be notified and California FBLA reserves the right to notify law enforcement officials.

UNITED WAY

MISSION:

Get to know Corona-Norco United Way

Snap-shot of Programs

CORONA-NORCO UNITED WAY ENGAGES THE COMMUNITY TO SUPPORT AND TEACH INDIVIDUALS TOWARDS EDUCATIONAL SUCCESS, FINANCIAL STABILITY, HEALTHFUL LIVING AND INDEPENDENCE.

Problem: Education

Problem: Income

Problem: Health

Since 1971, education spending in the U.S. has grown from $8,300 to more than $9,000 per student. But, reading and Math have flatlined.

As many as one-third of working Americans do not earn enough money to meet their basic needs. Wages have not kept pace with the rising cost of housing, healthcare, and education and currently, 40 million Americans are working in low-paying jobs without basic health and retirement benefits.

More than 33% of children and adolescents are overweight or obese. That’s 25 million kids and teenagers.

Approximately 7,000 kids drop out of school every day.

United Way Solution: United Way focus is on parenting engagement. United Way believes that parents and care-takers play one of the most important roles in the education of their children. No one can influence the future of a child better than parents. However parents need to understand what's expected of them and how they can be a support to their children. The creation of the United Way adult school gives the opportunity to parents to engage in the education of their children by advancing their own education. The program allows the parent to learn the skills necessary to help their children with their homework in areas of Math, Social Studies, Science, Reading and Writing. Without the parents mastering these skills the child is in jeopardy of losing interest and ultimately dropping out of school.

For families walking a financial tightrope, unable to save for college, a home, or retirement, United Way is here to help.

United Way Solution: Financial responsibility at home is as important as it is at work. No one deserves to be in financial difficulty for the rest of their lives. United Way believes that the key to financial stability and independence is good financial management and self-discipline behaviors. The knowledge is not taught in school, so United Way has created a program to address that issue head-on. With basic knowledge and strong self-discipline the individual will learn how to budget and maintain his or her finances within their means.

Children with health coverage are better prepared to learn in school and succeed in life. The number of Americans without health insurance has increased steadily since the beginning of the century, now totaling about 47 million. More than 80% are working families. 8.7 million children live without health insurance – more than the total number enrolled in the first and second grades in U.S. public schools.

United Way Solution: Fortunately many organizations, including our government, have identified this epidemic creating ways and encouraging improved school meals and regular exercise. United Way believes in advocating and supporting community efforts to improve the health of our community members from the youngest to the oldest.

United Way believes in the power of parents, teachers, students, companies, elected officials and members of the community, working together for the common good. To know more about it, please visit us at www.cnunitedway.org or call our office at 951-736-0620
