July2014

Marj Dalby says : I was born and raised in Hull, where my father was a lorry driver and my mother a chiropodist's assistant. I attended St Mary's grammar school and left with 13 'O' levels to become a cadet nurse at the Western General Hospital in Hull. I continued to do my nursing training and after a short stint as a staff nurse did Midwifery training, part 1 in Cornwall and part two in Hull. After a few months as a district midwife I felt the need for change so went to Rio de Janeiro where I worked as theatre nurse in the Hospital dos Estrangeros. My contract was for 2 years but the political unrest in the country was such that I returned after one year. Brazil had a revolution 2 months later! On returning home I worked as a surgical ward sister at the Western General, but felt all the administration was not for me so went to the local college for a year during which time I took physics and chemistry from scratch to O level (it was not considered ladylike at school), plus two A levels. Leeds University kindly accepted my SRN, SCM as equivalent to a third A level, and I did my medical training in Leeds, followed by 3 years GP training in Pontefract.

I became a GP in Cleethorpes which I loved, and during which time I was briefly married, but had a car accident after only 9 years in the post in 1984. I had a total of 26 fractures, was ventilated for 3 weeks and have since had a total of 70 operations to keep me going. I also have regular acupuncture which keeps pain at bay. Driving with hand controls has helped me to maintain some independence. Needing something to do, I taught first aid for several years at the local Red Cross, and volunteered as a counsellor at the Well women centre on a weekly basis. I also became a Trustee of the Across trust which ran the Jumbulance, providing holidays and pilgrimages for the sick and disabled. I travelled as the Doctor on 33 trips, which was wonderful as I could practice some medicine and a 'pusher' was provided in return for my services! During this time my wheelchair was my greatest asset as the other disabled folk knew I understood their difficulties. Through Across I met a good friend (actually many good friends) in Father Paul who later accompanied me as 'pusher' on several cruises to the Mediterranean, the Baltic and the Caribbean. Our last trip before the funds ran out was to South Africa, where I got to see Victoria Falls, the Big Hole at Kimberley and Table Mountain in Cape Town. Cont. on page 7

If you know, any member is unwell, please contact Marj Dalby

Cont from page2 Re: Marj Dalby Feeling the need for more mental stimulation I trained to be a magistrate including chairmanship training and sat on Grimsby and Cleethorpes bench for 19 years until mandatory retirement at aged 70. The court staff were fantastic and arranged ramps and grab rails, and the porter would collect me in the wheelchair from the car park. . In the 1990's I did several Internet courses on Spiritual philosophy and then taught a small group at a monthly class for 5 years, until I felt I was covering the same ground a second time. At the age of 66 I enrolled at Hull University to do a Masters degree in Criminology, which I enjoyed tremendously, my dissertation being on Women in the Criminal Justice system. Again the staff were great and arranged for me to be collected from the car park and wheeled to lectures. I joined U3A in 2009, and became a committee member in 2002, where I am currently the welfare officer. I attend the monthly meetings and enjoy the book club and the card making group.

Play Reading Group

Croquet summer 2014

Play Reading Group will not be meeting in August. Please note that Play Reading Group will meet on 1st Thursday 4th September instead of usual meeting day on 2nd Thursday.

Vibrancy is the word -- from the croquet group. members bring with them.

Social Cycling Group

Croquet has got off to a good start with 5 new members joining us this year. There is a mixture of talent and one member managed a "Hole in one ", or should I say a "hoop in one". All players prove very apt at the game.

Are you interested in leisurely cycling? You would love to cycle but you do not have a cycle. Please contact Pauline Campbell.

It is the enthusiasm the

The croquet group has been up and running for 20 years at New Waltham. I have been helping for 17 of those years each Tuesday.

Group will meet on Wednesday 9th and 23rd July. Request to All Group Co-ordinators It is important that you share your group activities with the rest of the U3A membership through this newsletter and our website. Information can be sent to Anne, Pauline or Himanshu. Request to All the Members We like our members to be active participants in all the U3A activities. Our website is interactive. You can share your views and opinions on website or in the suggestion box at the main meetings.

Committee would like to hear from you. Gardening Group II

Our U3A gardening group II recently spent a most enjoyable visit at Pear Tree Cottage, Glouceby, Nr. Louth, LN11 9UP. The Owners of the garden welcomed us most warmly with refreshment before showing us around their most beautiful garden. If you are looking for a very pleasant outing, you could visit this garden which is open for the National Garden Scheme on Sunday 20th July 2014 between 11.00am and 4.00pm

As members increased in 2005 Dennis and I took the decision to extend the meeting to 2 days a week. We then enjoyed the game on Tuesdays and Fridays so the 35 members were split into 2 groups, choosing which day they wanted to come. Unfortunately, the loss of loved ones and other health problems relating to age affected the numbers in 2013. We downsized to approximately 25. Also the ad-hoc arrangements., (me being away with family a lot). 2014 commenced in June a month later than norm. To date -- showing about 18 members who are interested in this friendly sociable "Golf Croquet game". Tuesday is the regular day. I have dispensed with Friday on a regular basis as it is too much for me. Past members who are unable to attend on Tuesdays due to other commitments and U3A activities have been informed that they can contact me if the weather is fine and I am here, enabling them to play on a Friday "Ad-Hoc". I have requested croquet players to sign in their next of kin on the forms I provided -- for U3A insurance purposes. Hopefully I might find the energy to do our usual strawberry tea and end of season party. In past years we have dressed up as " bathing belles of the 1920's era" "Edwardian ladies playing croquet" - "All whites theme" and visited Woodhall Spa for three years on the trot playing croquet on their green and enjoying coffee on arrival followed by buffet lunch 12noon - and afternoon tea, as well as taking a stroll to admire the gardens of beautiful Rhododendrons in bloom when not engaged in playing croquet. A talented photographer/player - Brian - was always at hand to record these events. My albums are full of these joyous occasions. Everyone appeared to enjoy the game and these social get togethers-thank you to all who took part, without you it wouldn't have happened. Berenice.
