It has come to our notice that some groups have non-members attending their activities. Some members have failed to renew their membership which leaves us with two problems. First, in the event of any injury or incident, a non-member will not be covered by U3A PL Insurance. That means the group leader/co-ordinator will be liable for any insurance claim. Secondly if the group is filled by non-members, it is unfair for members who are waiting to join the group. If you are unsure about the situation, please contact one of the principle officers or the Group Co-ordinator Liaising officer: Pauline Campbell at groupcoordinatorofficer@grimsbyandcleethorpesu3a.org.uk June 2014

Pauline Campbell came to Grimsby some 44 years ago with her family for work reasons and has been here ever since. She was a Legal Secretary for many years in Hull and after a 10 year break working for the local Careers Office, she returned to legal work working for two national as well as local legal firms. In the past in her leisure time she has held positions as Secretary and also Treasurer on Committees mainly to do with competitive swimming as her son and daughter were members of the Grimsby Santa Marina Swimming Club and also Cleethorpes and District Swimming Club. She was a qualified Time Keeper and travelled around the country officiating at local Swimming Galas as well as the larger district ones. She met her husband Dave after her first marriage broke up. She purchased a house and took on a young lodger to help pay the bills, this lodger being Dave’s youngest son and Dave often visited his son and chatted to the landlady. That is how they met and they married the following year. Dave had been in the RAF for 22 years and had lived in Germany, Gibraltar and the Shetland Islands before returning to his birthplace of Grimsby upon his retirement and in civilian life began working for a local Dental Practice. They have lived in New Waltham since 1997 and had to move to their present property in 2010 as stairs were difficult for Pauline and the large garden was proving difficult for them both to manage without help. They joined the Grimsby & Cleethorpes U3A some 6 or so years ago and Pauline became Membership Secretary and as they took the register at the door it enabled them to meet the members of the U3A and even to try to remember names to faces. It’s not that easy and Pauline took the first memory course which has proved invaluable when meeting new people and trying to remember names! Pauline became Groups Liaison Officer in October 2013 although not a member of the Committee. She can usually be found helping with the raffle on General Meeting Days with her husband that is when he is not helping the two ladies in the kitchen with the washing up. Apart from their interest in the U3A and groups they belong to Dave and Pauline between them have five sons and a daughter, thirteen grandchildren (one more due in May) and two great grandchildren.

If you know, any member is unwell, please contact Marj Dalby
