You are what you tweet: using Social Media to connect with journalists Stephen Naysmith, The Herald
The world of social media is a threat to traditional journalism, and newspapers, like everyone else, are working hard to adapt.
Like charities, journalists are wrestling with big questions about technologies such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Flickr. What is it for? Why do I need it? How should I do it? Is it wise to leave inexperienced but tech-savvy interns and trainees to manage something so potentially vital? But traditional media is also still important and can be crucial to a social media strategy. The Herald Society Editor, Stephen Naysmith, will share lessons which can organisations can learn from how journalists are using social media, and how can they use them to get coverage and support using both traditional and new media.
What's the risk? - Social media policies and the importance of experimentation Ross McCulloch - Third Sector Lab
Ross , Director of website design and social media strategy agency Third Sector Lab, looks at the importance of creating a social media policy which gives your staff the freedom to explore, experiment and get the most out of online channels. Drawing on his wide range of third sector social media experience Ross will use real-life examples to show how the most engaging and thought-provoking online campaigns are those which involve some element of risk.

During the workshop you’ll explore tone of voice and how you can give yourself a fighting chance of being heard online.
Lessons Learned: engaging with young people using Social Media Robbie Forsyth, Youth Football Scotland
Since it's launch in November of 2010, Youth Football Scotland has worked relentlessly to interact and engage with the young players and volunteers of the youth football community across the country. Social media has played a huge role in that, with the organisation's Facebook page and Twitter account being the first port of call for a large percentage of users. Over the two and a half year stretch some of Youth Football Scotland's social media tactics have worked to a tee and some have, to use social media terms, 'epically failed'. In this workshop Robbie will give you an insight into what to do and what not to do when trying to engage with young people online.
The National Trust for Scotland - telling Scotland's stories through Social Media
Adam Coulson - The National Trust for Scotland
As a conservation charity, the National Trust for Scotland engages with a number of audiences online from parents and families to horticulturalists, archaeologists, outdoor enthusiasts and many more. This session will look at the tools available online to help organisations carry out range of functions such as databases, event planning/reporting, monitoring work, data management and backup. Ian will help you understand which cloud tools will work best for your organisation.
Captivating Stuff: how Young Scot use social media to connect with their key audiences Kyle Usher, Young Scot
Are young people just not listening to you? Are you trying to engage but they think you are out of touch? If you’ve answered yes to either of those questions the chances are you’re either a parent or a third sector organisation. Young Scot’s Digital Development Co-ordinator will lead an interactive workshop on how to gain and keep a captivated audience of young people online. Based in his wealth of experience Kyle will look at what young people want, how to stay relevant, what to avoid and how to design youth focused media.
