Our new SCIO Registration and Conversion Service

The Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) is a new legal form for registered Scottish charities. It was developed to reduce the burden on charities who wish to incorporate. More and more charities are converting to a SCIO.

Although registering or converting to a SCIO is free, the process can be both daunting and time-consuming for many organisations. The GCVS Organisational Development Service team has specialist knowledge of SCIO inceptions and conversions, and can make the process easy for you!

New SCIO Registrations

For the cost of a few hours consultancy, we:

. Have an initial meeting with your organisation to ensure you are fully aware of the legislation, regulations and the duties and responsibilities of Trustees who manage a SCIO

. Draft your constitution, complete the application forms based on the information you have provided, and provide Trustee Declaration forms for you to give to your trustees for completion.

. We will then help you to manage any queries from OSCR, ensuring the process is simple and as hassle-free as possible.

Typically, from our initial meeting until your forms are sent to OSCR could potentially take one working week. This timescale is far, far less than most organisations that go through the process by themselves.

SCIO Conversions

The SCIO conversion process is more complex than simply registering, and depends on whether you are an existing charity or a Company limited. We will provide the services mentioned above, but in addition, will help you to:

. . . .

Identify where you need permission from OSCR before starting the process and guide you through the requirements. Draw up the required legal resolutions to present to your membership for conversion approval.

Prepare all the required forms and paperwork for submission to OSCR.

Help to prepare your organisation’s processes for managing the new entity.

The timescales for conversions will vary depending on the type of organisation you are and whether your constitution allows changes to be made. Our advisor can give you an indication of timescales when we meet with you to discuss your needs.

SCIO Costs

SCIO registration and conversion services are available elsewhere – but typically at almost double the GCVS charge, and some professional agencies charge up to £2000. The GCVS charges are:

SCIO First Registration £250 plus VAT

SCIO Conversions from £370 plus VAT

Both our SCIO services also offer the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you are contracting with GCVS – the membership organisation and advocate body for Glasgow community and voluntary sector, with over forty years of providing advice and support, and a membership base of 600 voluntary and community organisations.
