Training and Learning at the Albany Centre

www.gcvs.org.uk/training

August 2012 - March 2013

There’s something for everyone in the new Albany Centre community programme

Evening and weekend activities for you!

Community activities come to the Albany Centre

The Albany Centre has been open since 2008, and since that time we have worked hard to establish its core functions and services. But we have also had longer term ambitions to use the Albany Centre to provide a vibrant programme of evening and weekend events and activities. In early 2012 we won Enterprise Growth Fund funding, to allow us to do just that!

Who can attend?

Anyone! We are offering a mix of community-based events, self-improvement classes, things to help you in the workplace, exercise and dance classes, art and design workshops, jewellery-making - and more. Simply contact us for a brochure, or go online: www.gcvs.org.uk

Get involved!

We are constantly looking for new talent - people within the voluntary sector or beyond, who have skills, talents or information that they want to share with others. If you would like to be involved: • Sharing ideas for new services or activities • Hiring spaces for your own community activities • Helping to run activities or delivering a session yourself • Volunteering time or resources

We will be delighted to talk to you! Our contact details are here

Voluntary Sector organisations must be responsive to the needs of their service users and staff in order to comply with equalities law, but with such a wide range of needs, how can we plan ahead to meet our responsibilities? This course looks at a wide range of accessibility issues – physical, social, communication and cultural. It offers an introduction to basic equalities concepts, access auditing and the legal basis behind the need for accessibility. It provides plenty of examples of accessibility issues in employment and service provision, as well as opportunities to share your own experiences with voluntary sector colleagues.

Future Matters

A TWO DAY COURSE: Early 2013 - date tbc

Take your organisation forward in difficult times!

We are all coping with the financial downturn and communities in crisis. We have to deal with cuts or, at best, stand-still grant funding. Tight contracts are bringing change on a scale that few of us have experienced before. And it feels like we are running just to stand still.

But DON’T underestimate the importance of stopping and taking time out to think and plan!

Organisations that know and plan for the worst and work to understand their value and worth, that are focussed on what is important to them and their communities, will be in a much stronger position to navigate the financial storms and survive fit and strong and able to respond to the new world.

This programme has been designed to help your organisation’s management understand what the future holds. It will provide you with information, help you understand and use tried-and-tested organisational planning tools - but probably just as importantly give you a space to think and plan. Over the two days we will also explore different models, case studies ideas and options around organisational transformation. The two-day programme is aimed at senior managers, project leaders and boards and will be a mixture of learning, work and space to think - so ideally you will come in pairs or small groups from your organisation.

Trainers: Consultant Trainer John Ithell and GCVS Senior Manager Helen Scammell

This event is FREE .Please be committed to attending if you book spaces. Non-attendance costs other organisations the chance to attend.

Analysis or Paralysis

A HALF DAY SESSION Early 2013 - date tbc

In a fast changing operating environment it is important for organisations to be aware of the impact of external issues and ensure that they are capable of responding positively and proactively to change. Analysis of internal and external issues is vital to future sustainability by avoiding paralysis (caught in the headlights) at a crucial time. This half day will provide you with thinking space and an opportunity to explore driving and restraining forces and planning your response by working through Force Field analysis with consultancy support. The aim is to ensure you leave the session with confidence that you have carried out a detailed analysis and you have a plan to develop your organisation. Trainers: Consultant Trainer John Ithell and GCVS Senior Manager Helen Scammell

This event is FREE. Please be committed to attending if you book spaces. Non-attendance costs other organisations the chance to attend.

Working with clients who feel vulnerable and all alone? Look out for the upcoming

Swapping Shoes Programme

GCVS will be working with teaching consultancy Later Learning over the coming year to help them deliver sessions of their innovative Swapping Shoes programme. The sessions are intended for clients of voluntary and community organisations and will be very competitively priced.

What is Swapping Shoes? Swapping Shoes is a unique adult learning experience which brings together groups of adults with common experiences and challenges. This programme provides an opportunity for them to look into the lives of others who face similar situations and challenges. Attendees are encouraged to use the knowledge and learning they already have to discuss and develop ways to make things better. The aim is to create a comfortable environment for the customer, where they are more likely to engage in, and share common experiences with others who are participating. Swapping Shoes will explore: . What they believe currently in terms of their common situation, what they hope for in terms of the future . What each thinks are their strengths in their current situation . Where they think the need to improve and find new solutions . What they think they can pass on from their experiences which could benefit others in the same situation.

Swapping Shoes sessions are designed for people facing common challenges, who can help each other. This may be . Family domestic carers who look after dependent family members . People who are suddenly unemployed in later life . People who find themselves in places of refuge and safety . Those recovering from alcohol or drugs dependency, sometimes linked to abusive relationships . Recent school leavers who have underachieved and need guidance and direction . Recently divorced or widowed older people, who need to rediscover their independence . Older people in the community who are experiencing loneliness, isolation and lack of information.

Adult learners are pre-screened though interview, to assess compatibility with the wider group. The adult learning outcomes are explained and it is made clear what is expected of participants and that their agreement to engage is required.

Look out for GCVS publicity on upcoming individual Swapping Shoes sessions. Meantime, if you would like to express interest in your clients taking part, contact Tel: John Kimmet on 07817183757 Email: info@laterlearning.org
