GCVS is now working with our membership to deliver expert training
GCVS has delivered training to voluntary and community organisations in Glasgow and beyond for almost twenty years. For the past four of those years we have owned and operated the Albany Learning and Conference Centre, and our courses and learning events have begun to earn a reputation throughout Scotland. In this programme, we are taking this service to another level again, by utilising some of the skills and knowledge that lie within our member organisations.
Recently, we contacted our 600-strong membership, and asked them to express an interest in delivering select training courses for us. We did so in the knowledge that the sector is full of people with specialist expertise - expertise that other organisations could and should be able to benefit from. Our two conditions for accepting submissions were: 1) that the training is useful and necessary for our Third Sector audience, and 2) that the person tutoring is experienced in delivering training.
We thus have six new courses in this calendar that are delivered by some of our member groups. These are noted in the course descriptors.

Five minutes from Glasgow city centre, the Albany Centre is a fully accessible building, featuring ramp entrance, lift to all floors and accessible toilets. We provide catering for training in our in award-winning, on-site cafe.

Flexible Training Opportunities can help your training budget go further.
Up to £5000 towards your organisation’s training costs!
GCVS has teamed up with Skills Development Scotland to help you to access potential training rebates through Flexible Training Opportunities. They will refund 50% of the cost of up to 10 training courses – at up to £500 per course.
So, for example, if your training costs £600, Skills Development Scotland will refund £300. If it costs £1200, they will refund up to £600. Any Scottish company with fewer than 100 employees can apply. Beneficiaries can include volunteers with your organisation.
The most important criteria for a positive decision is that you can make a business case for your training.
How do you apply for this funding for the training in this brochure?
We have negotiated to make it as hassle-free as possible:
1. Simply look for the Skills Development Scotland logo against the course descriptors in this brochure. It looks like this: Skills FTO Development Scotland

3. Apply to Skills Development Scotland, stating the training you or your staff wish to undertake. They will take you through the information they need, and have a decision within five days.

The term ‘social enterprise’ is widely used to describe enterprising third sector organisations but what does it actually mean? To answer this, reference will be made to the wide diversity of social enterprise organisations currently operating in Scotland and the UK, the range of services and activities provided by these organisations, and how social enterprises develop their income generation potential.
This half day course will also introduce the range of legal structures currently available for the Third Sector and how these structures relate to social enterprises, including the traditional ones of Company Limited by Guarantee and Development Trusts, and the newer Community Interest Company (CIC), and Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) structures. The course will also cover issues around Charitable Status, setting up a trading subsidiary, what is a Trustee, and roles and responsibilities for Directors. Volunteer Friendly Award – mutual support
Opportunities to meet up, share progress and discuss achievements and challenges
The Volunteer Friendly Award is a simple, user-friendly quality standard designed by Volunteer Centre Dundee to support, recognise and reward groups in Scotland who are good at involving volunteers. Volunteer Friendly helps you to take a systematic look at what you do and how you do it. It offers a flexible approach which allows your group to work at its own pace, with full support from Volunteer Glasgow.
Following on from a successful new initiative in 2012, Volunteer Glasgow are currently hosting regular, Mutual Support Group meetings. These began in October 2012 and the group is gradually growing. Venue: The Albany Centre, 44 Ashley Street, Glasgow, G3 6DS Dates: 5 March; 16 April; 21 May; 25 June; 6 August (9:30 to 12:00)

We work with a wide range of trainers and consultants, all of them proven experts in their field. And we can provide training rooms at the Albany Learning and Conference Centre, or, if it suits you better, we can deliver training at your own premises.
