HALF-DAY
Thursday 12th June 2014
(9:30am – 1:00pm)
The term ‘social enterprise’ is widely used to describe enterprising third sector organisations but what does it actually mean? To answer this, reference will be made to the wide diversity of social enterprise organisations currently operating in Scotland and the UK, the range of services and activities provided by these organisations, and how social enterprises develop their income generation potential.
This half day course will also introduce the range of legal structures currently available for the Third Sector and how these structures relate to social enterprises, including the traditional ones of Company Limited by Guarantee and Development Trusts, and the newer Community Interest Company (CIC), and Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) structures. The course will also cover issues around Charitable Status, setting up a trading subsidiary, what is a Trustee, and roles and responsibilities for Directors. Where appropriate, references will be made about the social business reasons influencing such structural developments.

Budgeting effectively is one of the cornerstones of any well-managed organisation. This practical and participative one day course is specifically designed to identify all the issues you need to consider when constructing an annual budget for your organisation.
A budget generally is made up of 2 separate components – Income and Expenditure and Cash Flow. This course demonstrates how they differ and highlights the importance of good cash management. Funding applications are increasingly more demanding with respect to the amount of financial information required to support applications. The latter part of the day demonstrates how to adapt your budget and periodic accounts in order to reflect the effects a successful funding application has on your business in order to clearly show the benefits of the award. If you want to stay open, setting a good price for your services is absolutely crucial. Too low and you’ll go bust. Too high and your competitors will get all the business. This short course looks at the main elements that go into setting a price that will be acceptable to your clients and at the same time keep you in business. We look at different pricing models - should you charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a variable project fee? Also, how do you decide your perceived value to your customer – ie, how much they are willing to pay? And how can you be more aware of what competitors are charging for similar services in the marketplace? It is recommended that you first attend Costing Your Services (see above). Developing your organisation is a constant process, and especially important when the economy is stagnating. This programme provides you with expertly-facilitated time out to learn about organisational development.
We use a variety of learning tools, processes and organisational change theories in a series of modules and coaching sessions. And crucially, over the duration of the learning programme, you will actually work upon an organisational development initiative that is tailored to your own organisation’s needs.
By learning together with other organisations on the programme you will broaden your applied working knowledge about how change happens, as well as creating a network of peers who are sharing the challenge. The programme takes five days, spread over three months. We start with a two-day module, followed by individual coaching sessions, then another two-day module, more coaching and a final review day. To get the best from this programme, we encourage organisations to send two participants at management / development worker level who can work together in implementing the planned organisational change that comes out of this learning.

Equalities
ILM Mainstreaming Equalities Organisational Development Programme
This Institute of Leadership and Management endorsed training course is specifically designed for Third Sector organisations. The course is jointly hosted by GCVS and CRER, and takes place over four dates at
the Albany Learning and Conference Centre in Glasgow.
Monday 11 August 2014 Monday 15 September 2014 Monday 6 October 2014 Tuesday 4 November 2014 All sessions from 10.00am – 4.00pm.

• Build capacity to embed equality in everything your organisation does • Understand legal obligations under the Equality Act 2010 • Share equalities knowledge and experience with Voluntary Sector colleagues • Practical actions to meet the developing equality requirements of Public Sector funders • Includes access to extensive training materials and resources
Subjects include: • Key equality concepts • Equality in employment, volunteering and procurement • Equality Impact Assessment and planning for equality Tribunal case law and avoiding conflict
• The Equality Act 2010 • Consultation, involvement and engagement • Case studies based on Employment • Practical tips for embedding mainstreaming
The training course itself is free of charge for workers or board members from Third Sector organisations. It is possible to take the course without receiving ILM certification. For those wishing to gain an ILM certificate, there are a limited number of subsidised places available and the remaining participants will be charged the basic costs required to process ILM certification.
Course participants should have the authority within their organisation to make positive changes and the ability to effectively share the knowledge they gain from participation. Participants should therefore ideally be at a senior level within the organisation. However, we recognise the difficulty of time management within organisations and so any person can attend on behalf of their organisation provided they have the delegated authority to take action to mainstream equality.
It is suggested that two people from each organisation attend if possible; this provides more support within the organisation and minimises any disruption as a result of unavoidable absence. For all participants, we strongly recommend attendance at all four days. Although handouts and materials will be available, these do not replace the experience of participating in learning and sharing knowledge with others.
The training course has a strong focus on the organisation taking action itself. This means that participants will be required to do some work in between sessions as well as prior to the start of the course. This work will include sharing knowledge with others in the organisation and looking at the organisation’s policies, services and functions. The final assessed piece of coursework is an essay which will explore a selection of the topics covered during the training. This is required for participants wishing to receive an ILM completion certificate.
