Home Improvement “Why do I have to be gay to just want to hang out with you sometime?” said the stunningly handsome Home Depot sales associate.
eyes off your chest!” Cleary she wasn’t going to be the deciding factor to this mystery. My gaydar was all on its own.
Lately he’d been the only thing stopping from killing myself as I fumbled through power tools and paint cans all for my do-ityourself home remodel. At present, however, he hovered above me with a puzzling grin, smelling like a mixture of freshly cut wood and whatever was left of the cologne he’d applied hours ago.
Not wanting to seem too eager I waited a day or two before putting his number to use. When I finally got up the nerve to call, his enthusiasm over the phone was just as hard to decipher as it had been in the store.
“Well, you don’t have to be,” I nervously replied. “But you are, right?” “How about you call me later and we’ll talk about it then,” he said before handing me a business card and walking away to help another customer. As if buying home construction supplies wasn’t confusing enough! On TV a renovation seems like such a gratifying experience. But in real life there are budget constraints, unreliable contractors, missed deadlines, and a shit load of unanticipated structural catastrophes that pop up at every turn. Now instead of relaxing on the couch every weekend I usually end up wandering aimlessly around hardware stores, silently praying I’ll return home to a HGTV crew and fully finished living space. That’s where the handsome sales associate comes in. Every time I’m there he seems to have the answer to every question I drum up. Not to mention just the right amount of charm to make me actually feel good about spending all my hard earned money on designer cabinetry knobs. Still, I could never quite tell whether or not there was more hidden behind his helpfulness. I decided I should probably get a second opinion before I went in for the kill and end up with a hammer down my throat. “Honey, give it up,” said my girlfriend Chase with her newborn daughter on one arm and pink paint samples for the baby’s room in the other. “He’s straight and he’s totally into me. I’m serious. He couldn’t take his eyes off my chest!” “Uh ma’am, you’re lactating through your t-shirt,” I informed her. “No one can take their 14 davidatlanta
After we chatted awhile about my various home improvement calamities our conversation shifted to my design plan in general. This caused him to laugh a bit when I described the theme as being “masculine” yet “romantic”. “That’s funny?” I asked. He paused for a moment before saying very carefully, “Well, I wouldn’t necessarily say masculine is the first word that comes to mind when I think of you.” “Okay. He’s definitely straight,” I thought to myself, and immediately began mentally fishing for a way to wrap this whole thing up and get back to my leaky bathroom pipes. “Don’t get me wrong though,” he said. “It works for you. But back to what I told you the other day in the store.” “Finally!” I thought to myself. “What I meant was that my sexuality shouldn’t really matter if all I want to do is get to know you more in a nonsexual way, right? Sometimes it would be good to find a friend first and figure out the sex part later on.” With that said I felt small; very small and really trashy, actually. Here this man is, sincerely offering friendship to me and all I wanted to know was whether or not our exchange would ultimately end up in the sack. We went on to talk for another hour before making plans to meet up for lunch next Saturday during my regular visit to the store. But before we got off the phone my inner whore just wouldn’t let well enough alone. “So to be clear,” I said hesitantly, before finally deciding there was no right way to ask the still unanswered question. “You are gay though, right?”

ATLANTA WELCOMES
FEDRO By Alex Renteria
Born in Sonora, Mexico, Fedro began his career at 17 years old, starring in Spanish productions of American musicals like Rent, Cinderella, and Jesus Christ Superstar. Angelica Vale, a famous Mexican actress, who actually advised him to change his name to Fedro, befriended him. “She gave me the name [Fedro] because my original name is Fidel and she didn’t like it. So, she told me to change it. It comes from a Greek play.” (Indecently, Plato wrote the play called, Phaedrus.) After a few years of musical theater, Fedro decided that he wanted to devote himself to music full-time and joined a group known as Quattro. He then made his first national tour with the group and sang back up for Alejandra Guzman and Gloria Trevi, two very celebrated singers in Mexico. If you watch Spanish television, you can also see Fedro on Univision’s ‘Viva El Sueno’ (Live The Dream). It’s a performance contest show, similar to American Idol. Having an affinity for electronica style music, he had started working on his new CD two years earlier, “but when I started Viva El Sueno, I found out that people like to hear me sing pop ballads.” Then he
decided to add two new tracks (ballads) to the forthcoming CD that weren’t originally going to be on it. “I am very happy with my debut CD. It’s called Besos Excesos (Lots Of Kisses). I wrote three of the songs and am very proud of that.” Now about to travel across the United States, Fedro is very excited about his upcoming appearance at Chaparral in Atlanta. “I love the United States. Everywhere I go I like it. I would like to conquer more cities, but right now, I am excited to visit San Francisco and Atlanta! This will be my first time to Atlanta. I will give them the best that I have…I know the audience has to get to know me more, but I hope to conquer their hearts.” I don’t think that will be a problem, Fedro. You love being on stage and we love watching. For the future, he plans to “make more music, travel back to Atlanta, and continue to live my dream. Thank You so much!” You can also follow Fedro on facebook and you can watch Viva El Sueno every Sunday night at 8 pm on Univison. 17 davidatlanta

MARY EDITH PITTS Celebrates 20 Years
This Sunday, Mother’s Day, May 9th celebrates the 20th anniversary of one of Atlanta’s premiere fundraisers and most loveable entertainers, Mary Edith Pitts. And in true Mary Edith style, it is a fundraiser for two local AIDS Service Organizations, Jerusalem House and The Grady Infectious Disease Program. When asked how he came up with the character, Richard Cherry said he created the character for a camp contest “Ms. Backstreet 1990.” The body was created using a lime green polyester pantsuit stuffed with bed pillows and the boobs were inspired by Carol Burnett’s Norma Desmond character. After winning that contest, Mary Edith committed herself to raising money for HIV/ AIDS. As a frequent guest of the Armorettes and as Ms. Barfly 1992, Mary Edith’s unique brand of humor resonated with Armory audiences. In 1993, she was a candidate for Homecoming Queen and raised $12,000 for Project Open Hand. In 1994, she raised over $24,000 for The Grady Infectious Disease Program again as a candidate for Homecoming Queen. Finally in 1996 she was crowned Homecoming Queen after raising more than $29,000 for AID Atlanta. That same year she officially joined the cast of the Armorettes and volunteered with them
for almost 15 years. Over the last 5 years, she turned her birthday into a signature fundraiser that has raised almost $100K for HIV/AIDS. Her goal this year is to raise $60K. When asked what one moment she is most proud of in her career, she states “its any moment when a check is presented to an AIDS Service Organization. That is the culmination of everyone’s hard work and is truly a moment our community can be proud they came together.” Mary Edith has received numerous honors & awards including being voted Best Drag Queen by the readers of Creative Loafing, The President’s Award for Volunteerism, Best Up and Coming Activist by the readers of Southern Voice, Ms. Backstreet, Ms. Barfly, Homecoming Queen, and 1st Runner Up in Georgia Entertainer of the Year. Mary Edith Pitts 20th Anniversary Show is Mother’s Day, May 9th at 9PM at Burkhart’s. Along with raffles and a hunk auction, some of Atlanta’s finest entertainers can be seen giving of their time and tips including Tina Devore, Alicia Kelly, Shavonna B. Brooks, Savannah Leigh, Angelica D’Paige, Ashley Kruiz, Brent Star, Destiny Brooks and more. 33 davidatlanta

GAYLA GRACE Gayla Grace is from Detroit and has been living in Atlanta only a short time. Knowing how to sew, she used to help back stage at shows and pageants. Inspired by April Summers, Gayla entered an amateur contest one night and won. She won twice that night—the club offered her a job. “That started it all. I did that for five years and grew as an entertainer.” Since then, she has thrown herself in to performing. She praises those performers “that constantly compete on the road. It’s a hard thing to do. It takes dedication, determination, and true love of this art form.” Gayla must be working double duty because she has competed and she made it into the top ten at Miss National and Entertainer of the Year. She loves pageants and she is in the right city for them. “I have two [pageants] that I am working on this year.” She also loves to give the drama while on stage. Janet Jackson, Tina Turner, Shirley Bassey, and Rhianna are a few of the characters she likes to portray. “That takes a little more work than just doing a song . . .gestures, costuming, and the defined look come into play.” If you’ve seen Gayla perform, you know she is always on point. “I love for the audience to get life from what I’m doing. There’s nothing like hearing the applause or the screams.” When not performing, Gayla does work for a cosmetic company and loves spending time at home with her two cats, Milo and Mikimoto. Her hobbies include sketching, sewing, and watching movies. Although she doesn’t have a home bar in Atlanta yet, “I would love to perform at Jungle. I love that place and the cast.” You can still see Gayla in action as she has upcoming guest spots at Blake’s and Cocktail Cove in Atlanta and at Club 21 in Birmingham, AL.

the Brent Star report Basketball and Fried Chicken I can’t express how much I love to see people break stereotypes. Example-à I know a few nameless popular, pretty, dolled up glamorous drag performers who love to TOP. Speaking of which, I also know some drag queens who like to date women. Speaking of dating women, Tiger Woods broke the stereotype idea that golf belongs to older white men only. Get to the point you ask? I’m at My Sisters Room watching a stereotype breaker. You should know by now that Hip hop is not just for black folks. But I was still in awe to see this blonde Paris Hilton or Megan Fox “lipstick” lesbian type do hip hop better than most black folks I know (like me and Princess Charles) and knowing all the damn words and gestures, and in full gear wearing the hat on top of the scarf , (this Drag King’s name is Jager, you know like the shot). I also thought it was interesting that she pulled another pretty white girl on stage for her back up dancer. Hold on for a second, this lollipop I’m sucking on is the ONE! Oh, speaking of Lollipop, child the host of the show, Tiff’nay (yep she’s white too) came out and did Lil Wayne sporting Lil Wayne dreads, the bling bling grill in her mouth, the gangsta bandana parlayed across that foe’ head,…oh it wasn’t just about the costume, you can feel her passion for this genre of music that she expressed. I would LOVE to see her and Lateasha Shunte Shantel go at it. If you don’t know Lateasha, she’s known to be the blackest bitch in town (but ah…not on the outside). Ok, let me explain whats going on right quick. My Sisters Room is holding a Drag Race competition that I told you about a few columns ago. I also told you that I’m apart of it and made it through two rounds (without being involved in a drive by). I came here tonight folks to support and do my Mariah mix as a special guest child. I don’t do too much hip hop, I can’t rap my way out of a Nyquil cup….but hold on, I would date a few of the rappers. Oh yea, but the gag would be, would I be the one on top? …crickettes…Ok, THIS Friday is the finals at My Sis Room of this two month long competition. It’s six of us trying to win that top dollar prize. You don’t want to miss this! May 7th. And remember, NEVER, fall into the trap of a “stereotype”. It doesn’t matter what color your pussy is, be YOU and be what you feel! If 46 davidatlanta
you’re a 7 foot black man who rather wear a tu tu and go grocery shopping than play basketball, do YOU. I don’t believe you have to fall into a stereotype just because you’re a certain color or gender. Speaking of stereotypes, I feel like eating some fried chicken. I sure do. AND?! Moving right along, here I come Publix! And remember, don’t read the girls, read The Brent Star Report!

March 21st-April 19th You need to be utterly shameless right now -- which isn’t too hard for you! Your colleagues are in your service more than anyone realizes, and you need to get them to do your bidding if you want to have fun. April 20th-May 20th It’s one of those weeks when everything seems to be going along smoothly for you -- your reflexes and instincts are all serving you well! Make sure that you spend some quality time with someone you love. May 21st-June 21st You should be able to get your friends to help you right now -- at some cost. They may decide it’s time to take over your life, and nobody loves being bossed around. It’s still worth it!
Cancer
June 22nd-July 22nd Life might be a bit too much for you now, so see if you can get your friends to cover for you. All your major responsibilities should be covered, but you still need some approval.
Leo
July 23rd-August 22nd Your desires are quite strong lately, which might mean that your disappointment is equally strong! That’s not to say you’re sure to lose, only that you need to expect the people in your life to have other priorities.
Virgo
August 23rd-September 23rd You are having too much fun -- or at least that’s how it seems to one of your friends or family members. They may try to cut you off or do something else that’s in your ‘best interest.’
50 davidatlanta
September 23rd-October 22nd You may have to deal with a leash this week -figuratively speaking, of course. You generally aren’t into harnesses or limits of any kind, and you need to speak your mind. If it comes from a friend, though, you may relent. October 23rd-November 21st Your savvy instincts are finely honed right now, and you should be able to get your friends to watch your back while you deal with whatever threat has appeared to challenge your supremacy. November 22nd-December 21st Your focus on the lively arts is striking this week -- you may be singing tomorrow, putting on a show for your friends the next day and sitting down to watch the drama with your peeps this weekend.
Capricorn
December 22nd-January 19th Someone you like quite a bit finally warms up to the point where you can really tell what they think of you. You hate uncertainty, so your relief is palpable and makes the neighborhood nicer.
Aquarius
January 20th-February 18th You may want nothing more than to take care of one vitally important problem, but if you don’t stay focused, you are sure to miss your big chance. If your colleagues think you’re nuts, you’re on the right track!
Pisces
February 19th-March 20th You need to show how helpful you can be -- though it’s not like your coworkers are really wondering whether you’re worth your paycheck! You just want to help them take care of all their business this week.

bitches
Please keep all your uneducated twinks and trolls inside the Perimeter! Honey, please stop telling people that you got your “coutur” shirt during your last trip to L.A. I was with you when you bought it at TJ Maxx. And when the hell do you ever have the money to fly anywhere, least of all cross-country? He’s gay and has a cat. Of course he’s a bottom. Enough is enough. Give up your silly dreams of success or end the relationship. It is time for you to choose! Who cares about your frequent travels when you’re so damn annoying. The glory hole is back? I never knew it left. So where exactly are you having sex? Marriage is for the insecure. Honey, if you spend one more minute in the sun you’re going to look like an Oompa Loompa. Bitches, the only place flip-flops belong is n the beach or in the gym shower. I hope some drunk guy crushes your fucking toes at the club .
Forty dollars for Gay. com, $30 for Manhunt, $400 for the gym, and a whole lot of time working out and web surfing. Argument over Prostitutes are cheaper. I guess I’m old school. Back in the day, the best things about being gay were that you didn’t have to join the military during the Vietnam War and you didn’t have to worry about getting married and having kids. Now it seems all gays want to do is get married, have kids and join the military. What the heck happened ? How come the only time I walk in on two guys having oral sex in my building’s laundry room, the two guys look like Dick Cheney and Peter Griffith?
What is it with gay guys and vodka and rum ? Aren’t there any men around who like hard, dark liquor like Hennessy or Jack ? Before you judge men by their lack of body hair, maybe you might want to get to know him! My penis is spectacularly more photogenic than my face. I use it as bait and it works better than you could imagine. It’s easy to say no to my face but hard to resist my penis. Twinks really can stay young and beautiful forever - by sucking the life out of everyone else! No, I didn’t turn you down because you’re “too good for me.” I turned you down because you’re way too skinny for me. The last thing I want poking me during the night is your ribcage.
Putting a nappy wig on your head and stuffing tube socks down your shirt doesn’t make you a drag queen. Have some respect for the real artists out there trying to make a living. The stippers in this town have great bodies but I was wondering if they are all bottoms? Can someone who knows confirm or deny that for me ? Dear Bartender, It doesn’t make me any less of a man when I order an Appletini, it makes you an incompetent bartender because you don’t know how to make one. Hint, your job title is bartender, you might wanna learn how to ten bar . I let you crash on my couch for a week and you have a different trick over every single night. And to top it off you don’t even ask me to join in on the fun??? Very classy. No, we don’t want to go home with you. Why don’t you just do your job instead of hitting on us while we’re trying to enjoy our night out.
The best thing about warm weather? Those clingy nylon shorts all the straight jocks wear with boxers.
