essentially major by Michael Jeffrey David Magazine Welcomes Back Michael Jeffrey
Beginning Again “So buying new things is supposed to create new energy?” said the drunk man mockingly at my empty mid-remodeled apartment. Was he joking? Couldn’t he see that I’d sold all my furniture, cleaned out all the closets; I’d even got a professional color consultation before choosing the new wall color for Christ’s sake! How could I more boldly create new energy than that? This whole home remodel only came about anyway when somewhere between the Fourth of July and New Years Eve I had what my psychotherapist friend Blair describes as a “breakdown”. It wasn’t like I burst into my office with a semiautomatic or anything stereotypically breakdown synonymous as that. But as one crisis after another fell in my lap, I watched my picture perfect Midtown world slowly come undone. Breakups, birthdays, cyber stalkers, weight gain … you name it, I went through it. But the real blow arrived when I got notice that David Magazine was closing its doors and my little column -- the only bit of light I had left -- was going away with it. “Fuck! What the hell are you going to do now?” said my best friend Chase once I relayed the bad news. This was also the reaction of every reader I ran into around the neighborhood. At bars or in the gym, the question was still the same. Once even the girl behind the counter at Insurrection demanded to know “what the hell I was going to do now” when all I really wanted to do in that moment was rent some porn and get the hell out of there. My private life falling to pieces behind closed doors was one thing, but being publically held up to inquisition about this loss at every turn was another. Especially since the question at hand was one I couldn’t quite find the answer too. What was I going to do now? By the time another depressing holiday season dragged by, the full weight of my hopelessness (not to mention the extra weight around my waistline) really started to overwhelm me. This called for drastic measures. So I did what any respectable gay man does when he breaks 12 davidatlanta
down. I sold my belongings and took myself shopping for all new everything. For the next two weeks my loft could have very easily been mistaken as a Salvation Army outpost. Potential buyers of my old furniture were in and out, while others came to sort through boxes of gently worn shoes and clothes. I’d even committed a chunk of the proceeds to an interior designer who vowed to professionally inject some new energy into what had literally become my den of self loathing. Then entered this drunk man who I foolishly allowed to follow me home after a reckless night on the town. We were standing front and center in my empty apartment when he found it necessary to add his two cents to my reenergizing efforts. “I’m just saying,” he slurred, while trying to keep his balance on the lone remaining barstool, “what’s the point in buying all this new shit when you’re still going to be the same person once it arrives?” That’s the problem with a mouthy drunk. Two bottles in and all of a sudden they’ve got the common sense of Mother Teresa. The trouble was he was right. The surface could change all it wanted, but on the inside I would be the same person until I committed to doing the real dirty work of remodeling that part too. Even more than being right, he was living evidence. What sense did it make to analyze paint colors for their emotional effect if I planned on dragging home every half-decent looking lush I could get my hands on? Fortunately, in life some things never completely change for good. Today I’m back home at David; this familiar place where I get to hang my dirty laundry out for all of gay Atlanta to giggle at every week. And just like my home remodel, I’m internally still under construction. But thanks to the drunk man I unceremoniously evicted from my apartment that evening, I think we’re both finally on the right track.

Leather Pride Fest Premieres in Atlanta By Jesse A. Hancock
Put on your best leather chaps and gear this weekend and head to The Atlanta Eagle. Atlanta is joining the ranks of San Francisco, New York City, Los Angeles, Toronto, Chicago and other cities in hosting Atlanta Leather Pride, the city’s first ever leather event weekend, April 9 - 11. The festivities include parties, a Black and Blue ball, and a leather family brunch to name a few. The main event will be the crowning of Mr. Atlanta Eagle on Saturday April 10 at 9 p.m. During the contest members of Panther L/L and The Hotlanta Rubber Group will be helping run the show. Special guest bartenders from Atlanta S&M Solidarity will be serving drinks all night, and all tips that night and donations throughout the weekend will be sent to support the Leather Archives and Museum of Chicago. This year’s head judge for the Mr. Atlanta Eagle contest is Alan Penrod, who won the event last year and was recognized as second runner up for International Mister Leather 2009. International Mister Leather (IML) is an international conference and contest of leathermen and leatherwomen in May. IML began in Chicago in 1979 and has grown vastly since then. To qualify, IML contestants must either be the winner of a bar, local or regional leather contest or be sponsored by a leather bar, business, club, or organization. Penrod, who holds a Ph.D. and works in public health education, moved to Atlanta from Ft. Lauderdale about five years ago. He is a member of several leather and fetish organizations dedicated to education and community service, including Panther LL, Inc. and the Hotlanta Rubber Group. “My commitment to increasing awareness of critical health and safety issues affecting gay men, particularly young men who have sex with men has extended well beyond my professional life and into my community service and fundraising efforts both in Atlanta and Ft. Lauderdale, my previous home of 20 years,” said Penrod. “In my far too limited free time, I enjoy spending quality time with my partner and our dog, hanging out with my club brothers and sisters, and lifting weights at the gym. I have been lifting weights for over 25 years. I enjoy going out and can usually be found wearing a snug pair of black leather chaps and motorcycle boots or slicked-up in rubber gear at the Atlanta Eagle.”

Another guest judge is Jeffrey Payne, International Mr. Leather 2009. After the death of his mother Sharon St. Cyr, Payne grew up in an orphanage in Louisiana. Once he was crowned IML 2009, he was inspired to create the Sharon St. Cyr Fund (SSC Fund) to help raise funds and awareness for charities such as the Leather Archives & Museum, National Coalition for Sexual Freedom and Hearing from the Heart, a charity he and his husband sponsor to help hearing impaired people within the leather community. Originally from Maine, he and his husband David Roy now live together in Dallas, Texas with their four dogs, and in addition is a member of the Leather Knights, Dallas Area Male Naturalists, NLA-I, NCSF, Couples Metro Dallas, and is a voting member of the Leather Archives and Museum. The other judges are Alex Lindsay (American Leatherman 2009), Insatiable Amazon, Matt Hennie (founder and managing editor of Project Q Atlanta), adult film star Scott Spears, and Matt Neumann (publisher and editor of David Atlanta Magazine and Southern Voice). Be part of this history-making event in Atlanta, leather fans! For more details go to www.atlantaleatherpride.com.

something about life
by Nico Ramos
The Rain
The rain, so torrential and forceful, hits the pavement. As instantaneous as the water falls, a stream in the road is formed, and the dirt, the debris, and the grime along the lonely curb are cleared away. As the scene is played out from my bedroom window, I unbelievably envy the curb. Because it, unlike my self, has been cleaned and renewed in a metaphorical way that I could only dream of.
There is something so intrinsic, so symbolic about the rain. Maybe it is because after a rainstorm, there is a rainbow left behind? Is that our little colorful reminder of hope? Either way, when I see the rain, I am constantly reminded that there is a renewing force that will restart my life. I just don’t know when it will occur.
18 davidatlanta
Perhaps, we all wish some proverbial rainstorm will wash over us. Maybe that rainstorm will come in the form of a relationship or in a friend. No matter what form it comes in, we are all waiting for the rain. I am tired of waiting. I will not wait anymore for some relationship to restart me, and God knows I refuse to wait for a friend to do that job. Instead, I am relying on my self. I could be wrong, but why do we use ourselves as a back up plan? When did having faith in ourselves become secondary to having faith in others? Personally, after having faith in others get thrown into my face time and again, I have started to have faith in myself. It is never to late for us to wash away our own problems and make them go away ourselves; so that eventually we will be ready for something great in our lives, so that we will have a friend or relationship enhance us instead of complete us. Starting now, I will let the rain poor down, because the rain, the cleansing, will start within me.

spotlight WILD CHERRY SUCRET Wild Cherry Sucret started performing in 1995 at the Boybutante Ball in Athens, GA. There were two other flavors—Honey Lemon and Eucalyptus. They were known as The Sucrets. Now, in Atlanta, Wild Cherry has been part of the Armorette organization for 10 years. “I started doing drag to help raise money and support HIV/ AIDS services. I also wanted to entertain and help people forget their problems and laugh.” Her work has paid off. The Armorettes are very close to making their $2 million goal. Wild Cherry and all of the Armorettes couldn’t do it without your support. “I love the people. They energize me so much.” She said that several years ago, after a performance at Backstreet, a man approached her and told her that he was HIV+. He then mentioned that he laughed (while watching the show) for the first time in two months. “That’s why I do it—to help people escape and have fun.” Although the fight for the cause is very serious to her, Wild Cherry tries not to take herself to seriously. She mentions that she looks up to all of her Armorette sisters-
past and present-for being so generous with their time and energy. She says for all new and upcoming performers “…be true to yourself and do it for the right reasons. Don’t take yourself to seriously…at the end of the day you’re still a man in a dress.” In addition to working with the Armorettes, Wild Cherry also coordinates the Atlanta Pride Annual Starlight Cabaret. When not performing, she watches TiVo and loves to travel. “I have been on every continent except Antarctica.” You can see Wild Cherry Sucret perform with the Armorettes on Sunday nights at Blake’s On The Park; however, she won’t be there much longer. If you have heard the rumor that she may be retiring from performing, you heard right. “My farewell show is Saturday, June 12 at Jungle. It’s called ‘This Is It.’ Think Michael Jackson’s funeral…with a twist.”
Jeff
@ Blake’s on the Park
Jeff started tending bar in 1992 at The Quest in Birmingham, AL and has been doing it ever since. Originally, from Tuscaloosa, he has been living in Atlanta for 13 years and works at one of the most popular bars in Atlanta—Blake’s On The Park. “I love being involved in the nightlife scene here in Atlanta. This is definitely the place to be if you want to be in the middle of it. The hottest guys in Atlanta come into Blake’s!” In addition to having fun at work, Jeff (aka Alabama) likes to hang out with friends, enjoys fishing, cooking, and “enjoy life. I love to gamble and to travel—when I can.” You can see Jeff at Blake’s On The Park on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday nights. While you are there, try one of his specialty drinks: “It’s called ‘Beam Me Over’. It’s made with Southern Comfort and Amaretto…come try one.” 28 davidatlanta

the Brent Star report
Who’s the Master? There’s so much that a hot, sexy trick like me can do on Fridays. I decided to explore my options and went to The Eagle. Besides, I needed to go see what all the fuss is about with all the pending lawsuits. Ok, why 3 bears attacked me when I first walked in (it felt inda hot though). Nice crowd tonight actually. They have so many different ‘rooms’ in this place. A casino table in one room (very Oceans 11), a pool room, a couple of ‘bar’ rooms, a legendary gate on a stairway that says BEWARE OF DOG…in which…we…never…see…a dog. Oh and what fun, the Eagle is one of those nightclubs with a gift shop (a little different than the ‘gift shop’ they have in the restrooms at Swinging Richards). Child, you should have seen the ‘toys’ and ‘men’s apparels’ in this shop, however the only thing I purchased was a pack of big red gum. I had a brief chit chat with the young hottie behind the counter who told me he was a “slave” and I should speak to his “master”. Gurrl, this was getting interesting. His name is Master du-Wayne Ray. He was the guy making leather stuff behind the glass door. At first I was a little intimidated by the 20 piercings on his face putting me in the mindset of that tall villain from the movie 300. However, once we started talking, I felt like I’ve known this fella for awhile. In fact before he became store manager for the Eagle, he used to do boy drag under the name Joey Neverland. That was roughly 13 years ago, but he’s still somewhat in the game as he has made award winning leather costumes for GiGi Monroe, Lauren LeMasters, and Angelica D’ Paige to name a few. Now you know we talked about him making me one so I can be ‘Master Star’ (hmm, I wonder if “Master P” wears leather and has a slave). He informed me that the crowd tonight was ‘dominated’ by a black leather goup called ONYX. Vice President EJ Session informed me that it’s a national group that’s based out of Chicago. They don’t just wear leather though, they often times give back to the community through their charity program benefiting organizations like Chris Kids and Israel House. Ok, after all this I was parched. I went and got me some much needed Jack. Danced a little and had a great time. Later, I thought about what Master du-Wayne was telling me about how he noticed some people still feel uncomfortable about coming to the club every since the big raid happened there. Well, I went and recommend you to 36 davidatlanta
support your local establishments. He then told me the story of how 13 years ago the Eagle made him feel at home and that he got his MOM to come one night who later told him that she had the best time EVER! So to that, I say be your own Master and not a slave where people try and stop you from going to a club with their raid tactics. Later that night I left to meet a friend of mine over at Blakes. Tonight was crazy! Why was there a life size blow up white rabbit floating in the crowd as if in a concert? Probably bartender Rusty’s idea. The bar staff was swinging those drinks out like their freaking LIFE depended on it! It was like they were in a race! Why not, they had those flag banners everywhere like it was about to be a drag race…wait, it is, the Armorettes Easter Drag Races! I’m supposed to be there in a couple of hours. I gotta go, stay tuned for next week as I give you dirt!

community Christopher Rice Returns to Outwrite With New Thriller Tuesday, April 13
Award-winning author CHRISTOPHER RICE returns to Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse on TUESDAY, APRIL 13, at 7:30 p.m., to read from and sign copies of his new novel of international intrigue, THE MOONLIT EARTH (Scribner). Outwrite is located at 991 Piedmont Ave., at the corner of Tenth St. in Midtown Atlanta, 404-607-0082. This is a line ticket event. Tickets are free with purchase of a copy of THE MOONLIT EARTH. Rice, author of four New York Times bestselling novels by the age of thirty, returns with his first female protagonist since The Snow Garden. In THE MOONLIT EARTH, he delivers a compelling psychological thriller about a young woman who must act to save her brother’s reputation and life when he is accused of being involved in a terrorist event. When Megan and Cameron Reynolds’s father walked out on their mother, they forged an unbreakable bond. If their father could not be there to take care of them, they would always be there to take care of each other. But life intervenes, and siblings go separate ways… until something happens to reforge that bond. At thirty, faced with disappointments in career and romance, Megan Reynolds returns to the safety of Cathedral Beach, the home of her mother, who lives among the wealthy with no money of her own. Cameron worries that his sister will lose herself around their mother’s frivolous life, but Megan worries more about her brother. She worries that Cameron’s 42 davidatlanta
carefree charm, which makes him popular in both his work as a flight attendant on a luxury airline and the West Hollywood party scene he enjoys, could lead him into danger. When a bomb goes off in a high-end hotel in Hong Kong, security-camera footage appears on television showing two men escaping: one Middle Eastern and one American. Megan and her mother recognize the young American as Cameron — and find that he has become enmeshed with a mysterious family of wealthy Saudis. In her desperate journey to save her brother’s life, Megan uncovers a trail of secrets and intrigue that snakes from the decadent beaches of southern Thailand to the glass skyscrapers of Hong Kong — and finds herself part of a dark global conspiracy that involves a member of her own family. At 29, Rice is the author of three best selling novels and a regular columnist for The Advocate magazine. His first novel, A Density of Souls was published when the author was 22 years old, and to a landslide of media attention, most of it due to the fact that Christopher is the son of best-selling vampire novelist Anne Rice. Shortly thereafter, Christopher followed up with a second New York Times best selling thriller, The Snow Garden, a dark tale of infidelity and art history set on a New England college campus.

around the block after work. Not only will you be Although you may not have followed through on that New Year’s resolution to exercise, there’s no reason not getting activity but you can use it as a time to “destress” and forget the workday’s routine. to start now. Many people think that getting exercise has to be a big production with a gym membership or home equipment, clothing and accessories. There is also the common misconception that good exercise takes a lot of time. Not so.
Another alternative is dancing. Cue up Cher, Pink! or your current favorite diva. Keep moving through a few songs and you’ll be well on your way to getting your heart rate up and your muscles and joints loosened up.
If you’re just starting out, are overweight or just completely out of shape, take your time in getting up to speed. If you start out too quickly or intensely, you can get discouraged and quit altogether. Instead, work up to the ideal work out time and intensity. Walking is a great place to begin. Start with a trip
Aim for getting up and moving 5 days a week. Make it part of your daily routine. Keeping a journal of what you’ve done when allows you to track your progress.

Moto Bistro
Atlantans love to eat and venture out in to the world and its flavors. Since Atlanta itself is a melting pot, fusion cuisine is bound to enter our palates sooner or later. The latest new comer offering such fusion cuisine is Moto Bistro located at 2257 Lenox Rd. The ambiance is calm and serine with the sound of a waterfall in the background. The décor has Thai/Zen influence with touch of class from France. With candle lights, colorful paintings on the wall, along with plants, all elements of earth seem to be the theme here. Teddy, who is one of the owners was welcoming with his Asian accent and explained the wonderful menu and said that French food combined with an exotic touch is the latest food trend, thus in “fashion”. The menu is created by Teddy and the Head Chef Christopher Micou, who hails from Marcel, France. He earned his culinary skills from Europe and experience from the world. With as many as ten items each in appetizer, soup/salads and entrees, one can definitely see France and Thailand in one sitting. Items such as Duck breast with Orange glaze and Salmon with Star Anise butter show the intense French influence with hint of Thai spices. Tarts are the main highlight for dessert, varying from lemon, to pear and strawberry. A full bar is in progress with variety of French wine and exotic cocktails, adequate to suite the ambiance of Moto Bistro. Prices seem to be quite reasonable, which makes the wallet happy. Staff adds another star to the restaurant as 48 davidatlanta
the service is quick and friendly. There is no dress code but when on a date, do dress to impress. Although casual attire does get the same five star treatment. Moto Bistro is the latest gem added to the melting pot of Atlanta, and is here to stay.

GLBT Fans Get Advance Screening of
Lookingglass Alice at Alliance Theater
By Jesse A. Hancock
Attention all queens! You won’t want to miss the Alliance Theater’s production of Lookingglass Alice, now through May 2. On April 1 the Alliance Theater hosted Queen Night, a special pre-screening for the GLBT community, complete with a post-show cocktail party and crowning of the best-dressed queen. Hosted by local superstar Nicole Paige Brooks, the party was a great success and the entire evening set the stage for an exciting running of this play. In this sequel to Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland (1865), written seven years later, Alice wants desperately to become a queen, but the path she takes in getting there is not so easy and full of surprises. It’s always 6 o’clock in this fantasy versus reality story. Lookingglass Theatre in Chicago is famous for taking a famous story and creating a unique, deeper version through exaggerated theatrical techniques, especially acrobatics. Most people who have ever seen a Lookingglass show would describe it as a combination of live theater and Circque du Soleil. In Lookingglass Alice, Alice climbs and swings from ropes over the audience, and other characters jump and climb onto each other’s shoulders. The White Knight even rides a unicycle. “As a fan of the book, I was in awe at how they brought those iconic fantasy characters to life without the help of billion dollar animation and studio green screens,” said Drew McGaskill, who attended the show. “I loved the athleticism and the opportunities to be a part of the production. The Cheshire cat was almost deliciously naughty, and that made me smile! There was great singing, choreography, acrobatics and a picnic basket chock full of surprises and wonder--none of which I expected! It was a delight; I completely forgot I had to pee!” The show is all about the art of illusion, which is created at times with simple props. For instance, Alice literally falls through a rabbit hole in the form of an acrobatic hoop suspended center stage in air.
She also passes through a looking glass to the other side where everything is opposite. Lookingglass Alice began at Lookingglass Theatre in Chicago in 1988. This is truly an ensemble cast with each actor getting a turn at stealing the scene. Alice is portrayed flawlessly by Lindsey Noel Whiting, who recently played the same role at Actor’s Theater in Louisville and Syracuse Stage. Along the path to becoming a queen, Alice is met with characters who sometimes help but more often challenge and frustrate her. She also speaks directly with a character representing Lewis Carroll, born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. Mr. Dodgson challenges her to question where she is going and why she wants to go there. As in the original Alice, she is also forced by several characters to attempt to answer riddles with no answers. Fans of Alice in Wonderland will delight as Alice meets up again with some familiar characters such as the sultry, scene stealing Cheshire Cat, played by Anthony Fleming III, a very unique caterpillar played by three actors, and Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. Alice also meets Humpty Dumpty, a White Queen who ages backwards, and a hilarious, over-the-top Red Queen. At one hour and forty minutes with no intermission, the play moves quickly and each scene is more unpredictable and entertaining than the next, at times with audience participation. Only five actors are in the show, but they play as many as fifteen characters each, coming and going seamlessly in and out of each scene. Lewis Carroll said, “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there.” Does Alice succeed in her quest to become a queen? Find out by letting your road take you to this extraordinary and delightful play. To purchase tickets online or read more about the show, go to www.alliancetheatre.org.

bitchsession We may not have worked out, but I can walk away with my head held high, knowing I’m prettier. I chose Vodka over you because unlike you, vodka doesn’t bitch at me...nor does it tell me how to swallow it. Before I put my foot in my mouth or up your ass, Ill put it on the floor and remind my self that my shoes are too expensive The reason I don’t give you back your clothes is because I have taken them to good will. They are too ugly for you to wear.
“When life gives you lemons, squeeze them in your enemy’s eyes, and then run. And if you can, pelt some oranges, cantaloupes and watermelons at them too. Who said fruits can’t be dangerous?” Okay, so who do you think you are? You send me so many mixed messages that I could do a better job of listening to a music album by Helen Keller. Seriously, give it to me traight. Don’t touch me and say your hand slipped, don’t kiss me and say you tripped, and don’t play with my feelings. Need I remind you that I have seen you naked and well, my emotions are not the only thing getting the short end of the stick? Short being the key word. In most cases, after the exchange of body fluids and sharing of personal information, when things go south, I say, “I hope life gives you all it needs, I wish you happiness, and you are a really great person.” That is completely and totally fallacious; aren’t we really thinking: “I hope you develop an addiction to donuts, I hope you become interminably depressed with out me, and that you are not a good person, in fact you are a lousy person who I decided to charitably donate myself to you.” We also often hear, “Be the better person.” Well, yes, of course I want to be the better person, but more than anything, at the end of a relationship, I really want to be the betterlooking person. The pieces don’t fit always fit, but damn it, at least my skinny jeans will. Do you like seafood? Because I hope you get crabs.
If I hear people talking about Twilight, Supernatural or any other form of sexually active mythological creature, I do not know what I will do. If creatures that don’t exist are getting more action than me, I am doing something wrong. And if someone tells me Team Edward or Team Jacob, I will call for team bulldozer and run your ass over. “You know how I told you it was good for me? Well, I just wanted you to pay for drinks.” Maybe once we are able to face up to the fact that we fantasize about embarrassing our ex’s in public, spilling a drink on them, or introducing your much hotter lover to them and telling them that they were a bad kisser, or far less endowed, we might be able to come to an understanding with that person. Eventually things might be able to work out in the long run, and if you do get all of your frustrations out, then maybe a new form of relationship can begin. But until then…may your privates stop working.
“We did not work, therefore, you need not exist. That is a wonderful statement for the relationship challenged. So make like Lindsay Lohan’s career and dissapear.” Pride in October again really? So instead of hot boys in their underwear we get flannel, I think I’ll skip again this year. I love Blakes and all, but to move the ever so popular drag races too place that has no parking to begin with and close their parking lot is insanity! Why does the “gayest city in the US” have only one real dance club, and it s a stretch to call it that. Some of us don’t want to be your little j/o fantasy for latter, that’s why we go to the stall to change, you freaking perv! Why is when strait people say “If we allow Gay’s to marry, then what’s next. People marrying animals?” Uhm, it wasn’t gays that brought up the marriage of animals. And also, do you see us trying to marry relatives?
