something about life

by Nico Ramos

Just Emotions Like a surge from the west, sometimes, one gets hit by an emotional weather front. During the emergence of an over all abundance of sentiment, I can’t help but wonder what is the use of it all. I speak for many when I make this statement: don’t toil with someone’s emotions. Don’t play up on their fondness of another, don’t tease with their compassions, and don’t prey on their fears, insecurities, or expectations. It hurts. Not like the sensation of a knife on skin, a fall from a bike, or a bump in the head, it hurts from a place one can’t reach, where Tylenol cannot help. Also, it lingers. Physical pain often dissipates like a summer storm; emotional pain can often have its own rainy season. Recently, I have begged to whatever spiritual presence is governing this world for a cessation of emotions. Tired of gloom, tired of disappointment, and tired of unrequited sincerity, I have dreamed of a day where I could walk around and complete my responsibilities void of feeling for you, nervous of what others may presume, or sad for my inabilities to succeed in certain arenas. I am a logical person, believe it or not. I like to have reasons behind things or at least a semblance of purpose. With the logical aspect of my personality, I wanted to find the reason behind emotions, especially mine. A big search, I know! Music, personally speaking, is mankind’s most wide spread study on the presence and effects of human emotions. Love, joy, hurt, despondency, excitement, and disappointment are all emotional themes that are explored in the world of music. With lyrics such as: “Whats love got to do with it, who needs a heart when a heart can be broken,” “But its just emotions, taking me over, caught up in sorrow, lost in the song,” and one of the must painfully true musical lines, “Every time you build me up, you only let me down; everybody knows, almost doesn’t count,” the music industry has made billions of dollars talking about the human emotional state; however, for all its in depth observations, it does not provide a reason for them. I need a reason to provide clarity for my current tempestuous fog. Why do we have emotions? In the scientific scheme of it all, there is no concrete discovery for the uses of emotions or the reason humans experience them supplementary higher then anything else on this planet. It seems that emotions are such a hindrance on the daily lives of people. I can’t count how many precious 16 davidatlanta

minutes I have devoted to thinking about someone, infatuated and long full or how many hours wasted in disappointment over them; these are emotions we are subject to. One day it dawned on me, during an emotional hurricane of my own; emotions are human’s reminders that we are more than just ticking time bombs set to expire on an average of 70 years; emotions are the spiritual bonds that link every living human being and defines our species. During abolitionism, people argued against racism and inequality due to the fact that we are all equal, we all feel sadness, happiness, fear, and dispiritedness, all being common emotions. Emotions were used as a unifying force, not just a singular manifestation experienced individually. I guess understanding the web and interconnectedness of human emotions gives me a little more incentive to endure it all. Knowing that I am taking part in a shared experience of millions somehow makes me more understanding of people in similar circumstances, and dare I say more sympathetic? I guess, in the end, knowing that emotions contribute to the unity of the human race makes the lonely nights worth while and the good times that much sweeter. On a final note, an Emily Dickenson poem sums up two of the most wrenching emotions humans experience: heartache and longing. Heart, we will forget him! You and I, tonight! You may forget the warmth he gave, I will forget the light. When you have done, pray tell me That my thoughts may dim; Haste! Lest while you’re lagging. I may remember him! No matter what gender you assign your feelings towards, it is sentiment like this that further harkens my point that emotions are a unifying force. After all, haven’t we been there and done that at some point? Which ever of the plethora of emotions you experience, take solace that someone is experiencing it at the same time, and even though we may be in different worlds, or in regards to the poem, in a different time, we are all linked together because of what our hearts feel. Knowing this makes my sadness all the bit better and understandable.

Kyra Mora Kyra Mora is a true Georgia Peach. Although born in Atlanta, she says she moved around Georgia a lot “ because I am a ‘military brat’. But, I moved back to Atlanta in 2007.” That was a good year for Kyra; the same year she started performing. Two and a half years later, she is one of Atlanta’s most promising drag performers. Being a firm believer that one never stops growing (as a person), she does look to her predecessors for inspiration, “I look up to those who have been doing this longer than me, like Jazelle, Bianca Nicole, Pandora and, of course, Nicole Paige Brooks because they offer so much for me to learn.” Like many entertainers, Kyra says she is influenced by many things, “but my biggest inspirations come from my friends.”

is a good thing because Kyra plans to get into the pageantry system when she finishes her courses at Atlanta’s Paul Mitchell School for cosmetology. She already has two titles under her belt. She is the reigning Miss Atlanta Rising Diva and Miss Gay Cobb County. You will definitely be seeing and hearing more from Kyra in 2010. You can see Kyra Mora on Saturday nights at Le Buzz in Marietta and in guest spots throughout Atlanta. “I like to have fun on and off the stage. Come see me and we can hang out after the show.” http://www.facebook.com/kyra.mora http://www.myspace.com/kyramora

If you have ever seen her perform, you know that Kyra loves getting a strong reaction from the crowd. “Nothing feels better than hearing people scream for you.” That

@ Tripp’s

Originally from Syracuse, NY, Julio moved to Atlanta 12 years ago and has been tending bar the same amount of time. He used to pour at what was Miss Q’s in Amsterdam Walk, but now stands proudly behind the bar at Tripp’s. “I agreed to it (working at the bar) while drunk when one of the owners asked me. I had forgotten about it the next day,” he says, laughing. That lapse in memory aside, Julio really enjoys his nights at Tripp’s. “The owners, other bartenders, and clientele are wonderful! They give me lots of love. We have a very diverse crowd, not phony… they like to have a good time.” Julio has two jobs, so when not working, he loves to experience new restaurants, go to the gym, and hang out at home. “I (also) love traveling. There are six more cities 24 davidatlanta

in the world that I want to see and then I’ll quit wasting money.” With all of that world traveling, you’re sure to have great conversation while sitting at Julio’s bar. You can visit Julio at Tripp’s on Saturday nights. “On a good night, this place is a Tripp—pun intended.” While there, try one of his Oatmeal Cookie Shots. “It’s the grown up version of the cookie. If you haven’t had one then there is your reason to come see me.”

It is that time of year again? Time to don your best Easter bonnet & heels and join the Armorettes for a drag race? Yes! Everyone knows that the campy drag troupe performs every Sunday night; it is a tradition. “But, the Easter Drag Races is a way to kick off the joys of Spring. A day of fun and frivolity with the infamous camp drag queens of the south,” states Armorette J’Licious. It is an event that has been around about as long as the Amorettes themselves. “We will take our regular show outside into the fresh air as Blake’s back lot becomes the biggest patio in Midtown.” There will be many games to play, includung games like ‘trash bag’ fashion, musical chairs, an actual ‘drag race’, and an Easter bonnet contest. Of course, you will also be able to see all of your favorite drag queens. Nurse Holly, an Armorette veteran, calls it a “camp drag country fair.” J’Licious says there will also be a drag Jell-O wrestling event, as well as a Jell-O toss and a condom blow up game. To add to the festivities, one Armorette, who won an eBay auction of 10 cases of Peeps “is threatening to come out in an edible outfit made of them.” There is expected to be a sizeable difference in this year’s foot traffic at the event, considering that it will be held at the corner of 10th and Piedmont Street, the epicenter of gay Atlanta. The event used to take place at Ansley Square when the Amorettes performed at Burkhart’s. Another reason for a larger crowd is “being close to so many great local businesses like Outwrite, Gilbert’s, and Nickiemoto’s,” says J’Licious. “With more 30 davidatlanta

bartenders than you can shake a chocolate bunny at.” Wild Cherry Sucret and Knomie Moore will be hosting the soiree this year. You will also see 11 other characters from the group, including two of the newest members. Ally ‘Queered Al’ Yankadik and Eve Michaels will be making their Easter debut. It is also rumored that Wild Cherry may be retiring, so this is definitely a party you do not want to miss. There will be a bittersweet air to the drag races this year. As you all know, the last several weeks have been emotional because of the passing of Armorette Dixie D Cupp. J’Licious reassures us, “For the Easter Drag Races, as with all of our performances, we take the stage doing what we do for those who have been touched by HIV/ AIDS. We know she will be with us, smiling, laughing, and dancing.” So, come out to the Easter Drag Races at Blake’s on the Park; have a cocktail, play a game, enter a contest, and show your support. Remember, by tipping an Armorette, you will be helping them get to the $2 million goal of helping all people with HIV/AIDS.

A balladeer… Rocks With Out Front Man By Dylan Beck

Pop music is being redefined by the edgy, socially-aware, supremely tuneful, and themed melodies of a balladeer. Creative sparks first ignited seven years ago when a young vocalist named Marinus was auditioning new guitarists in Holland; he came upon a string man and music arranger ‘with the best ears for sound’ named Erik. They joined forces with drummer Tijs and began writing hook-studded tunes, demonstrating solid songwriting and storytelling. They needed a name for their band but couldn’t find the title that best described their uniqueness. Marinus then remembered the word ‘balladeer’. He first heard it in a song and liked the sound of it, but even more, the figurative meaning: a bit of a drama queen. He wrote the word down in lowercase, placed a small ‘a’ in front of it, and was pleased with what he saw: a balladeer. The band was born. Though the trio keeps up with the times – “we’re on Twitter and Facebook a lot,” says Tijs - historical events play a significant part in their music. “I have a tendency to romanticize the past,” admits Marinus who writes most of the songs. “I’ve been accused of not living in the here and now, but I believe that only by studying society’s mistakes can we learn not to repeat them”. Inspired by Tori Amos and Joni Mitchell, his lyrics are personal and honest, many times with a healthy dose of melancholy. They tend to be short stories, mostly from Marinus’ own experience. Many of the tracks on their debut album, Where Are You, Bambi Woods? are inspired by Marinus’ year spent as an exchange student in Texas; however, others like ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ is Jackie Kennedy’s story about the day her husband was fatally shot and ‘Oh, California’ is an ode to Joni Mitchell. Thought-provoking? Absolutely. It is infectiously essential, too. a balladeer weaves together rollicking guitar riffs, earthy percussion, and soothing harmonies with a plethora of smart lyrics. They are regularly compared to the likes of Counting Crows, R.E.M., Keane, and Coldplay.

band was devastated, for a day. They regrouped and decided to record the album themselves. When executives at EMI discovered a balladeer had tapped a top producer, a well-known bass player and arranger Robert Kirby, to record the demo, they asked if they could drop by the studio. They listened, they ate and then left. At 2:00 a.m. in the morning, Marinus received a text message: “We’re gonna do it”.

“We don’t mind being compared to other bands,” explains Erik. “People do that, so do we. When someone asks us to describe our genre of music, we say pop/rock with singer/songwriter influences.” a balladeer made their debut live appearance in late 2006 at a club in Utrecht, Holland. “We were the support act for a Dutch band and experienced one technical failure after another that evening,” remembers Tijs.

It took another year before they were signed.

“It’s not fun to be on a stage when things don’t go right,” adds Marinus. “But those performances make the best memories.”

The band’s mission is to make a beautiful oeuvre. That might sound not very rock ‘n’ roll, but then again, a balladeer isn’t exactly rock ‘n’ roll. “The best moment is when a song I wrote with a broken heart turns out to be an anthem that everyone sings along to, with a beer in their hands,” says Marinus.

Something went right because soon after, the band received a phone call from the major record label EMI, requesting a demo CD. Unfortunately, after listening, the label felt they didn’t hear enough hit singles. The 32 davidatlanta

They spent the year touring and cultivating an audience, one they describe as young (a lot of students), 60% female and 40% sensitive males. They appreciate the occasional grey hair in the audience. “When it is 4:30 a.m. and you’ve got grandma on stage partying with you, you know something works,” laughs Tijs.

“That’s when I truly do feel like a balladeer.”

Bearapalooza Bearapalooza began eight years ago as way to get musicians and performers in the Bear community together to celebrate life. Singer-songwriter Freddy Freeman started it and since it’s 2002 New York City premiere, it has become a national musical celebration of ursine unity. In August of 2009, Roy McLeroy, owner of Roy’s Hideaway in Southern Georgia, met with Freeman and decided to book Bearapalooza at his new membersonly GLBT compound, which is located just south of Savannah. Originally from Palm Springs, CA and a former Mr. Palm Springs Bear 2004, McLeroy and his partner, Eduardo, left California a few years earlier in pursuit of their dream of opening a place where the community could come together, be themselves, and have fun. They ended up in Collins, GA and named their vision, Roy’s Hideaway. McElroy and Freeman talked about bringing their two worlds together. After 8 years of traveling the country, Freeman and his partner, Jay, moved to Roy’s Hideaway. Now, for the first time at its new home, Bearapalooza is having a Bear Run and Outdoor Music Festival, ‘Mega Bearapalooza—80’s Rewind Weekend’, April 15-18. This is the perfect time of year for camping and for relaxing in a ’clothing optional’ heated pool and spa. This is a festival that you will not want to miss, as it

will be a weekend filled with fun for all. The Southern Bears of Atlanta are promising to keep everyone entertained at all times. Some of the musical talent that will be in attendance include Freddy Freeman, Kendall, Elijah Black, Yolanda Mapes, Don Harvey, Rockcub, and John Porco— just to name a few. There will also be 80’s dance and after-hours parties with DJ Moose and DJ Calvin, both from Atlanta. However, the fun does not stop there. You will see the Project WOOFTEASE Fashion Show, a comedy and variety show with comedian William Brown, and there will be games and contests, like Boom Box Bingo and Break Dance Throw Down. A camping experience would not be complete without a marshmallow roast and sing-along and a ‘Back Yard Cookout’. There will also be a camera crew on the campground that weekend filming the show and interviewing some of the artists and guests for a documentary called, Bear World. Therefore, come on out to Roy’s Hideaway and support the Southern Bears. This is sure to be one of the biggest GLBT events this year.

the Brent Star report

How would you like your egg sir?

Easter is the time to celebrate a ‘coming out’ party! Oh, trust me honey, I don’t do ‘blasphemy’, but isn’t it a time where we celebrate when Christ came rrrrrrrrrrrrrright on out that tomb! That’s right, let’s all come out and paint those eggs honey! Go ahead and put on the loudest Buford Hwy pastel colored prom dress, wear the brightest bonnets, chase some white rabbits and eat some chocolate bunnies and just be happy and gay! Wait, this is normally the Easter tradition of the Armorettes. And guess what, it still is, but this year the fun group who has raised more than a million dollars for HIV/AIDS will be laying their eggs this year in their new backyard, at BLAKES ON THE PARK @ 4pm. I’m going for two reasons. 1. They always put on a fun, high energy audience participation show. 2. To see how they’re going to pull it off! You might not want to miss this one! Speaking of Blakes, I just performed there last night. Child, that itsy bitsy dressing room was full of Easter Eggs getting dressed for the Monday night show! Imagine a broom closet. Now imagine me with my 3 piece luggage set trying to get dressed while bending over in front of a wigless Martina Diamante giving me an Evil look, as a matter of fact this whole night was an evil look contest, cause Lateasha Shunte Shantel was next, WHY did I spill some of my foreign imported glitter onto one of Lateasha’s blonde wigs! Oh instead of a look, she rubbed those long 13” nails of hers together while looking at me like a piece of steak, and I thought Fantasy Girl Phoenix gave black diamond Angelica D’Paige attitude for barging into the dressing room without knocking first, Sonique looked pissed cause there was no room for her to practice her flips. Oh honey, the evil looks didn’t just stop there, when I went downstairs to the “happy to be here” mixed crowd awaiting for the show to start, Lena Lust was sitting by the door giving me one ole evil look…for passing by without giving her a hug. I love her (… and…Eartha Kitt). Now what I really can’t believe is when everybody over heard Monday night host Alexandria Martin telling this one queen to…oh child I‘m sorry boo boo, but I’ve seem to have run out of time. Until next week, guess what I heard? 46 davidatlanta

Easter Fun Fact The custom of giving eggs at Easter time has been traced back to Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans to whom the egg was a symbol of life. (Hmmm. I wonder what they would think of an omelette? )

Music Scene

The current top song is Rihanna’s Rude Boy. But the VIDEO that everybody is talking about is by Lady Gaga featuring Beyonce. I don’t get the video but who cares, it’s crazy visual and Beyonce is a honey bun eating lesbian!

Quote of the Week: “You must learn to be still in the midst of activity, and be vibrantly alive in response”. Well, atleast that’s what they told me when I first went to Peek a Boo.

Brent Star’s Weekly Schedule:

Mondays at Blakes Thursdays at Café Con Leche (Heretic) with free tequila shots Saturdays at Tijuana Garage Sunday brunch at Las Margaritas and everywhere else that pays! .

biography

Maximillian Corwell “A lot of people were upset about the Eagle events, and I just happened to be one of the many who had an opinion to voice. Honestly, without Laura Gentle and Jeff Schade, these events may have already been forgotten. They really pushed forward and kept this alive, I was just happy to be a part in helping them get it started.” Maximillian was a crucial part in helping rally people together for the giant protest after the Eagle events took place. Maximillian took to his Facebook, called anybody who would listen, and organized an army of people who were ready to fight. Maximillian’s work garnered international attention, and was featured on CNN, NPR, Perez Hilton, London’s Daily Star, and other major publications.

Atlanta: the city of cheap sex, booze, easy thrills, and shady men. At least that’s what it is to many of the gay youth here in Atlanta. We have all seen the young kid trying to sneak into the bar, and the teens that are obsessed with material items. We’ve seen the teens who look for daddies, and the ones who, sadly, get addicted to drugs. Maximillian Corwell was just a quiet, down to earth teen when he moved back to Atlanta in 2005. He moved here and quickly became intoxicated on the exciting adventures the city had to offer. Maximillian’s transformation, which many us of in Gay Atlanta have watched unfold before us, is a unique one: From naïve teen, to promiscuous teen, to a successful business man, all within 5 years, Maximillian’s growth is something we can all learn from. “I was going down a horrible path after I moved here.” Maximillian said via email “It was all a new world, big city adventures, and the rush of trying to get away with anything you could. I thought I was on top of the world, independent, popular, and ultimately invincible. Truth is, I was human just like everybody else, and I was sucked into a dark place that wasn’t easy to escape from.” “It took a long time, but I finally realized you can still have fun, but without the dangerous behavior. It wasn’t easy to change my lifestyle though.” After many bad decisions, Maximillian decided to change the person he was, and become somebody who would make an impact in others lives in his community, one step at a time. “It started with YouthPride years ago, when I would help set up, coordinate, and promote dances for YouthPride members, along with some of the other volunteers. It was a great way to show kids you can have fun, without having to sneak into a club.” Maximillian ended up leaving YouthPride, but his work to help change Atlanta didn’t stop there. Since his YouthPride days Maximillian has fought city and state officials on legislation, organized petitions and protests, and raised money for programs in the city and local neighborhoods. His work also includes teaching at a local High School, and soon will include a new fight against HIV/AIDS. Most people probably know Maximillian for garnering international media attention to the now infamous Eagle raid. 48 davidatlanta

Today, Maximillian now co-owns a successful real estate team, The Corwell Group, where he assists Buyers, Sellers & Renters in finding the perfect home. However, his work still helps different causes. “Currently, every property we close, we are donating 10% of our net profits to a

charity or church of the clients choosing.” These donations have already helped benefit many local organizations and establishments, including a new park in Virginia Highlands. “We feel that many people want to give back, but financially aren’t able to, or don’t have the time. This lets them give back, without it costing anything.” Maximillian isn’t all work and no play; he has a very active social life, which includes acting in local filmmaker Eddie Ray/Ebola Entertainment’s horror short films. Maximillian also is running a new entertainment blog, using his former nickname, Max The Boy Lion, as its URL address. “All in all, I hope to be a role model to any youth in this city, gay or straight. Atlanta offers much more then just a place to get in trouble. Hopefully people can see what I have accomplished, and where I’ve come from, and get inspired to go do the same. The youth is what will make our city great, or make it fail. Hopefully they fight to see is flourish.” Maximillian Corwell owns and operates The Corwell Group in partnership with PalmerHouse Properties. His blog can be found at Maxtheboylion.Com max@thecorwellgroup.com

Sagittarius

March 21st-April 19th You’re on your way home, in one way or another. Maybe you’re moving toward what feels most comfortable for you, or maybe you’re trying to retreat a bit so you can get a better strategic view. April 20th-May 20th Transportation issues -- ranging from getting across town to getting to another continent -- are fresh on your mind lately, and you may have some great ideas about how you can get moving. May 21st-June 21st You can get a good deal this week if you go looking -- there’s sure to be someone willing to sell you what you need at the right price. It may take a while, but your mindset is perfect for hunting.

Cancer

June 22nd-July 22nd You can say almost anything this week -- your powers are peaking, and your more assertive qualities are showing themselves. It’s a really good time to tell your boss or partner how it’s going to be from now on.

Leo

July 23rd-August 22nd Trust your intuitive powers to guide you. You might not have much luck otherwise! Most people aren’t exactly being clear about their intentions, and you need those hunches to clear the path.

Virgo

August 23rd-September 23rd Try harder to meet people on their own ground this week -- it is certainly much easier for you than last week! You can score big points with them by showing your concern, and anything can happen.

68 davidatlanta

September 23rd-October 22nd Lie low and let others take the heat for a while -- even if you can’t tell when or where the heat is coming! You just need to make sure that you’ve got your own bases covered, as things shouldn’t take long. October 23rd-November 21st Put that big brain of yours to use this week -- it needs some exercise! You’re full of great energy, so you should be able to solve some tough problems or dream up some creative ideas for home or business. November 22nd-December 21st Your philosophical musings are keeping people rapt lately -- so keep them coming! You may not get much work done at the office or at home, but you should dream up a few hot new ideas!

Capricorn

December 22nd-January 19th Try to deal with the changes coming your way -- you can see them coming, and that’s at least half the battle. Your energy is just about right for getting friends and family to adjust their ways, too.

Aquarius

January 20th-February 18th You can’t tarry too long with chores this week -you need to just deal with them and then move on. If things start to get bogged down leave them behind if possible and move to the next on the list.

Pisces

February 19th-March 20th Keep up the creative energy -- you’ve got plenty to spare right now! You may find a new way to get work done faster, or discover a new inspiration for your artistic drives. Don’t deny yourself!

bitchsession You better be glad today is the Lord’s Day…I can’t really be a bitch. You make me want to cheat on you. Are you asking me how often you should shave? Cut down the trees but leave some grass.

Yes, I think I’m too good for you, just as I’m sure you think you’re too good for the guy who’s 100 lbs heavier than you too! If you wanna be with a guy like me then why don’t you get on a damn treadmill!

“Did we meet at flex?” Do you have grindr? I’m sorry if I have a blackberry. An uncut penis is like a game of peek-a-boo. Things fall apart; its natural; instead of saying, “I wish you the best,” which is total dishonesty, why can’t we say, “I hope you get fat and contract Chlamydia?” I feel like that it is honest, and the truth will set you free. For example, if someone I have a failed relationship with twists their ankle or tears their ACL tendon (yes, that specific), I may feel sorry for them, but secretly I laugh because now they can’t move very much and therefore, they will become chunky, and walk funny. Yes, I know it is bad, but life is tough; get a helmet. In the words of Lily Allen, “At first when I see you cry, it makes me smile. At worst, I feel bad for a while, and then I just smile.” I commend her, because she is speaking her mind. Why don’t we start?

You say you are bored of the gays in Atlanta. Just go out and make some new friends or something, oh wait.... you can’t, you have slept with them all.

To the cruisers at the Laundromat: When I hold my underwear up to fold them, don’t ask to smell them. If I’m folding them, it means they’re clean.

After weeks of eating out at nice restaurants, movies, and nights out on my tab... you decide to tell me your not ready for a serious relationship.

Please for the love of fish sticks…practice your “boom-boom-kats” before you enter Blakes and attempt to dance. You look like you are having a stroke!

You’re not pregnant…you’re gay. Don’t use earrings as a conversation starter. You were happy until we started talking about your highlights. He’s not feminine…he dots his “i’s” with hearts.

I love how every time I get on Facebook we seem to have more and more in common. You don’t even know them you f’ing CREEPER!!!
