TRAINING & SPORT
Dressage arena savvy by Theresa Odendaal
H
ave you ever looked at a dressage arena and wondered at the seemingly haphazard sequence of the letters, where the exact size comes from and what prompted the dressage fathers to adopt this formula as standard? Well, you are probably not the only one. There are two kinds of dressage arenas: Firstly there is the small or children-sized arena, which is 40 x 20 m in size. The letters around the outside are clockwise from the entrance: A. K, E, H, C, M, B and F – which has given rise to that little poem, " All King Edward's Horses Carry Many Big Fools". Along the centre line we have the letters D, X and G.
A 6m F
D
K 12 m
P
L
V 12 m
B
X
E 12 m
R
I
S 12 m
H
G
M 6m
C
The second arena is the full-size or standard arena and the letters, clockwise along the outside from the entrance, are: A, K, V, E, S, H, C, M, R, B, P, F, and along the centre line, D, L, X, I and G. In both arenas, X marks the centre of the arena. The letters closest to the corners along the long side, are 6 m from the corner and the other letters are 12 m apart. But why? Did those who designed the arena not know their alphabets, or is there some other reason behind this seemingly random selection of letters? Why the size and exact measurements? It is commonly believed that the German cavalry had a space of 20 x 60 m in between the barracks in which to practice and exercise their horses, and that the letters were the letters posted above the barrack doors. The measurements between the letters were the exact distances between the barracks (Wikipedia). At least according to this belief, one is assured that there is some method behind the madness! SAH

The First Silver Medal is Earned in the USEA Volunteer Medal Program
Diane Bird’s path to a silver medal: • • • • •
By Claire Kelley - USEA Staff
2021: 161 hours and 58 minutes 2020: 222 hours and 43 minutes 2019: 307 hours and 31 minutes 2018: 213 hours and 40 minutes 2017: 103 hours and 27 minutes
Seven volunteers earned their bronze medal in 2020, and this year, five more volunteers have joined the group of bronze medal volunteers. These newly minted bronze medal volunteers include John Bandrofchak, David Slagle, Dick Owen, James B Newman, and Joan Harper, who have recorded over 500 volunteer hours.
Launched in 2020, the USEA Volunteer Medal Program recognizes the volunteers who consistently volunteer year after year. Hours earned are cumulative over a lifetime of volunteer service. To earn a bronze medal, volunteers must record 500 volunteer hours; to earn a silver medal, volunteers must record 1,000 volunteer hours; and to earn a gold medal, volunteers must record 2,000 volunteer hours eventingvolunteers.com.
**These volunteers will be receiving their bronze medal and silver medal awards at the end of the year. The USEA would like to thank all eventing volunteers for their tireless efforts. About the USEA Volunteer Incentive Program Volunteers are the lifeblood of our sport, the unsung heroes, and the people who make it possible to keep the sport alive. In efforts to recognize the dedication, commitment, and hard work that volunteers put into eventing, USEA formed the Volunteer Incentive Program (VIP) in 2015. In 2017, an online management portal was designed for volunteers, organizers, and volunteer coordinators at EventingVolunteers.com (available as an app for iOS and Android).
Diane and her husband Art Bird.
Volunteer incentives include national and area recognition, year-end awards with ribbons, cash prizes, and trophies, a top ten USEA Volunteer leaderboard, and a Volunteer of the Year award, which is given to the volunteer who tops the leaderboard by accumulating the most volunteer hours over the USEA competition year. Click https://useventing.com/eventscompetitions/volunteers to learn more about the USEA Volunteer Incentive Program.
Diane Bird recently clocked in her 1,000th volunteer hour at Stable View Spring H.T., making her the first volunteer to earn a silver medal in the USEA Volunteer Medal Program. Since Dec. 1, 2016, Bird has recorded 1,009 volunteer hours and 19 minutes and is the leading volunteer featured on the Volunteer Medal Program leaderboard. Bird has recorded over 100 volunteer hours every year since 2017. She was the 2019 USEA Volunteer of the Year presented by Sunsprite Warmbloods, and in the last three years, she has always been ranked in the top five on the National Volunteer leaderboard. Get to know more about Diane Bird by visiting: https://useventing.com/news-media/news/after-31years-in-eventing-diane-bird-earns-nationalrecognition.
The USEA would like to thank Sunsprite Warmbloods for sponsoring the Volunteer Incentive Program.

Are You Interested in Joining a USEA Committee? Here's How!
USEA/Jessica Duffy Photo
Are you interested in joining a committee for the USEA? The first step is to understand what role a committee plays in the USEA how decisions are made. Committees make up one of the three main groups that support the USEA, along with task forces and the Board of Governors (BOG). Every committee reports to one BOG member, who ultimately makes the final decisions. Currently, there are 26 committees with anywhere from five to 25 members on each. These committees work together to come up with decisions involving handbooks, volunteers, scoring systems, and several other important factors. Now that we know more information about the committees, the next step in joining one is to get involved in your local Area. Volunteer leaders are crucial and needed at the local level in Areas. Working and getting engaged locally is a great way to be appointed to a national committee. The best and easiest way to do this is to contact your local USEA Area. Additionally, you can reach out to USEA Committee Chair members, or the Staff Liaison to the national committee, and discuss your interest in helping. People are added or approved to committees when spots become available or if additional help is needed. Both the USEA President, Max Corcoran, and the Board of Governors approve every committee member. Although this process is not always instant, people are often approved in a timely manner. Committees and the members behind them are an integral part of the USEA. From small details to large decisions, USEA committees are there to come up with the best solution possible. Making connections within the USEA and your local Area is one of the best ways to get involved and have the possibility of joining a committee.
