WHAT KIND OF SYMBOLISM DOES THE VIDEO USES ? The Odyssey is a Florence Welch฀s ambitious project. It is a short movie with 48 minutes long, directed by Vincent Haycock, that tells the journey of a woman stuck on a troubled relationship. Although she fights to keep her conjugal life, she can฀t feel the reciprocity from her partner. The woman must learn that, despite the dependency she feels for him, she must reach her happiness by herself, through self knowledge. What Kind of Man is the first part of her journey, where the characters and the symbolism are set for us to understand the plot. The video begins with the couple in the car, the man talks to the woman that she had a nightmare the previous night, but he doesn't wanted to wake her up because she seemed to be suffering. She gets confused and asks him why he didn't interfere, questioning if a couple that suffers together wouldn't be more connected than one that just contends. In the second moment we see the woman reporting to her partner a dream she had, where the couple was in the middle of a big storm. She tells that, despite the slack she could feel that the storm would strike them sooner or later.
THE STORM To the symbology, the storm can mean fight, conflict, loss or catastrophe. It also means fears or repressed emotions, like anger, sorrow and shock. In a brighter side, the storm can symbolizes the growth of the spirituality. It can also represents quick changes and transformations.
THE GODDESS The figure of the Triple Goddess cames from prechristian times and can be find in several pagan cultures around the world, where the Goddess was the center of the cult in many religions. Many times She represents the planet earth and the nature. In a modern definition with roots in paganism, the Goddess has three aspects, which are: The maiden, the mother and the lady. The maiden represents innocence and the seek for knowledge, the mother represents feminine power and protection, the lady represents wisdom and renovation.
THE TEMPTATION The womans first task is resist the temptation, manifested in the form of men, which are trying to separate her from the beloved. We can see she fighting with them, she tries to reach her partner, but is always interrupted. The scene becomes a dance while she figures out that must let the beloved go if she wants to advances to the next phase of her spiritual evolution. In the second moment we see the woman inside what looks like a dungeon, surrounded by men. The men seems strange to her callings and suffering this time. They act like this, so she can face the fact that none of them can help her during the journey. She must do it by herself.
THE PURGATORY Many people had realized references to the poem The Divine Comedy, by Dante Alighieri. The epic is divided in three parts, which narrates Dantes journey through Hell, Purgatory and Heaven. Some people associates the womans journey with the descend to hell, however the Purgatory's part seems to be more appropriate, because she is letting her flaws go to become a better person. Many allegorical elements from Dantes artwork can be found in the short movie The Odyssey.
