National trust For furniture and joinery manufacturers, keeping up to date with which new technologies and materials are available to help you meet (and exceed) customer expectations is an ongoing challenge – especially as our (outstanding) national trade show is only held every two years. Therefore, making the time to visit clients in person is a wonderful opportunity to not only see what’s on offer, but to fully evaluate who you would like to be working with. We all know that our work is full of ups and downs, and that difficulties, errors and challenges and are all part and parcel of running a furniture and joinery business. For me, it’s as much about how a company reacts when things go wrong. What back-up does a supplier offer? What can reasonably be done to alleviate a given issue? Why hasn’t my adhesive order turned up? What can I do now? Reliable and resourceful supply partners will have many eventualities covered – and some will even be able to offer practical suggestions when the inexplicable happens. One of the very best ways to get to know suppliers is to invest time in them – go the regular open house events initially, and if that goes well and you get a good feeling, return and check them out more directly at a later date. Last month I visited a number of open house events across the Midlands, and, to be fair, the ones I attended, whilst all very different, shared a fundamental characteristic – putting the customer foremost in their thinking.

COPY ADMINISTRATOR Steve Merrick Tel: 01424 776108 production@gearingmediagroup.com

Personally, that would be the first thing I would look for when investing to grow my own business. Of course, a huge amount of work then follows to verify that the product or service you invest in meets (and hopefully exceeds) your requirements. And if you don’t feel that you could rely on that company when the going gets tough, I would be exploring other options forthwith, without any qualms.

PROOF READER Keith Fitz–Hugh

With so many strong, reliable suppliers in our industry, there’s no need to settle for second best – but it often takes a closer look to establish who can truly be counted upon.

IDS unveils £1m distribution centre A £1m-plus investment in a new, purpose-built distribution centre in Thurrock is the first phase of a strategic development plan from International Decorative Surfaces (IDS) to further strengthen the company’s position in south-east England. The new depot, which opened in June, is situated at Logistics City in Thurrock, an enables the surface materials distribution specialist to better support growing markets in London and surrounding areas with an impressive 792,000ft3 of warehousing space. The Thurrock site represents an 82% increase in stockholding space and a 54% increase in the number of SKUs, with over £1m worth of key products in worktops, laminates, solid surface, panel products, flooring and wall panelling. Says IDS MD John Bagshaw: “This strategic undertaking in the south east demonstrates our ongoing commitment to growing by helping our customers and suppliers grow. Our surface portfolio is constantly developing, bringing the latest product innovations to market, and it’s really important to us that we continue to meet and exceed customer expectations. “This new facility at Thurrock is key to providing the high level of service our customers expect, with a wider depth and breadth of products than we’ve ever been able

to stock before to service the south east.” The new Thurrock warehouse investment comes on the back of a £1m spend to increase capacity at the company’s Woodford, Manchester, Ely and Nuneaton branches, to expand the Leeds and Stoke branches, and with work also planned for the Gateshead site. In addition, IDS recently invested £100,000 into upgrading its showrooms and offices at Rosyth and Gateshead, and completed a £200,000 refurbishment of its Norwich branch to increase its stockholding and provide additional office and meeting space. idsurfaces.co.uk

National bed event celebrates a strong performance

New brand manager for Alphacam

Hector Henry

The eighth annual NBF Bed Show 2017, which took place at Telford International Centre in September, enjoyed another strong year. Jessica Alexander, executive director of the NBF, which organises the show, says: “Exhibitor feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and visitors were impressed with the quality of this year’s show. Over the past eight years, visitor numbers have remained fairly consistent, and this show was no different. Over the two days, we had more than 1500 visitors, with 15% revisiting on the second day.” At the show, more than 80 brands presented the latest beds and mattresses, machinery and components. The show’s exhibitors were quick to offer

praise. “It clearly pays off, and this year’s event was another success for everyone involved,” commented David Hoyle, GMS, while Leggett & Platt’s Chris France said: “It just gets better and better… If you are serious about bedding, you seriously need to visit (or exhibit at) this show!” Jessica adds: “We also undertook visitor feedback exit surveys and will be analysing that data to find out if there’s anything we could improve for next year. We want to ensure that we are still creating an event that is cost effective for exhibitors but has the unique product focus and the best experience for visitors.” Next year’s show will take place on 18th and 19th September, 2018. bedshow.co.uk

Manufacturing boosts latest trade figures The UK economy grew by 0.4% in Q3 (July to Sept) 2017, following growth of 0.3% in the previous quarter. According the Office for National Statistics, this was driven by an expansion in production and services output, while construction continued to act as a drag. London has seen weaker average house price growth than the UK as a whole since December 2016, partly due to a fall in the average level of transactions. In the three months to August 2017, the unemployment rate remains at its lowest since 1975 and in real terms, average weekly earnings fell by 0.4% on the previous year (excluding bonuses). Commenting on today’s gross domestic product (GDP) figures, head of national accounts Darren Morgan said: “Growth in the third quarter of 2017 continued at a similar rate as seen in the first half of the year. Services, led by increases in IT, motor trades and retail, continued to drive GDP growth. Manufacturing also boosted the economy with an improved performance after a weak second quarter. However, construction output fell for the second consecutive quarter, although it remains above its predownturn peak.”

Vero Software has appointed Hector Henry as brand manager of its Alphacam CAD/ CAM solution. Having been promoted from his role of lead applications engineer, Hector’s new post involves working closely with strategic product director Raf Lobato in the evaluation of customers and stakeholders, as well as market conditions and innovations, to provide vision, leadership and a strong presence in today’s competitive global markets. Hector holds a degree in mechanical engineering, and his involvement with Alphacam dates back to 1999, when he was hired as a field service engineer by the SCM Group in North America. Hector joined Alphacam in 2016. Raf says: “These are exciting times for the CAD/CAM/CAE market, and Hector is the ideal person to ensure Alphacam is constantly ahead of the game for delivering solutions for increasingly complex CNC machine tools at an ever-increasing speed.”

Simple is more efficient All Kundig Sanders are simple to operate. A machine that is simple to operate means it is easy to use. If it is easy to use then it is user friendly. If it is user friendly anyone can use the machine correctly. If used correctly not only are the best results achieved, but using the machine correctly means less mistakes. Less mistakes means better efficiency. Better efficiency means higher productivity. Higher productivity means higher profit and as we all know time is money. Maybe this is why Kündig-sanders are beloved by those who work with them. Easy to use, they help reduce errors under stress. A Kündig always speaks the language of it’s user – whether it be English, German, French or even Russian.

Mirka’s commitment to intelligent technology

Smart, wearable technology may have a significant impact on the workplace across various industries over the next few years, and by 2025 it is expected that people will become increasingly reliant on digital health monitoring and advice dispensed by machine algorithms – according to The Foresight Report, published by the Health and Safety Executive. Anticipating the changing environment, Mirka’s new Our Clean Commitments Sustainability Report focuses on the possibilities of digitalisation, so that the company can offer its customers intelligent tool solutions that generate added value, while also assisting in safeguarding workers’ health. Working closely with its customers, the R&D department in Jeppo, Finland has developed the myMirka dashboard to enable businesses to monitor and measure the working environment through the myWorkplace section of the

dashboard with the help of different sensors in the workplace. As part of the continued evolution of the system, Mirka will introduce sensors across its tools range for connecting to the dashboard, and can easily integrate customers’ own sensors to it. Some examples are related to safety – the myTools part of the dashboard shows the running hours, motor and PCB card

temperatures, speed etc, which are important predictive maintenance indicators. There is also considerable automated equipment used in the workplace, and myMirka dashboard services also allow these systems to be connected with the help of APIs, so the customer can easily see from one view that their equipment is safe to use. In addition, when its electric

sanders are connected with an operator, Mirka can monitor and follow how the operator is using the tool. If the speed and motor temperature are not at the recommended levels, the operator might be using the tool the wrong way, which is potentially dangerous from a health and safety standpoint. If this is the case, Mirka can offer the business more training on how to use the tools to correct these issues. Craig Daycock, MD of Mirka UK, says: “We understand how smart devices for health and safety are increasingly being used by the companies we work with, which is why we are continuing to invest in both intelligent tools and software to help protect our customers from injuries such as HAVs and educate them on the potential risks as well. “The myMirka dashboard allows you to monitor the whole exposure history of the operator and gives instant access to facts, figures and information in a digital form.” mirka.com

Whitehill Spindle Tools included in the UK Parliamentary Review 2017 Whitehill Spindle Tools has been selected by the UK Government to add industry insight into the Manufacturing Edition of the Parliamentary Review 2017. The company features alongside the Prime Minister and a small number of specifically-selected UK organisations that have shown outstanding results from excellent working methods and practices. The annual Parliamentary Review combines political commentary from leading journalists and sectorspecific insight from Secretaries of State, Ministers and MPs. Distributed to over 250,000 leading business owners and policy makers in the UK and internationally, the review demonstrates how sector industry leaders have responded to challenges in the political and

economic environment. The 2017 Review was released in September to coincide with the beginning of the Parliamentary year, and allows leading organisations and executives to share personal insight and discuss best-practice alongside Cabinet and senior ministers. The review highlight best practice as a learning tool to the public and private sectors and is aimed at sharing knowledge and raising standards within the engineering industry and the country at large. Whitehill’s contribution demonstrates how its significant and vital investments in product design have helped radically improve the wooden window and door market. The company’s efforts and success has helped reverse the downward trend of wood against the UPVC market. This has resulted

Whitehill MD, David Hudson, discussing the review with Andrew Neil, presenter of the BBC’s political review show, This Week

in impressive YOY growth for the Luton-based manufacturer over and beyond the last decade. This ongoing success has continued despite the unknown effects of Brexit, and shows no signs of abating. The enormous advances made by Whitehill has translated to its UK and international clients receiving fully-finished. UK-manufactured. quality-controlled products, which are fully backed by certificates of performance criteria. Whitehill’s MD, David Hudson, comments: “Our continual investment in our people and our machinery is in place to allow us to provide all customers, however large or small, with the best technical advice and incomparable quality for both products and service.”

David Hudson attending the Parliamentary Review Annual Gala at the Houses of Parliament

The Parliamentary Review is sent to over 250,000 leading policymakers across all policy areas, and the articles in the review act as both a blueprint for success and a template for reform. The Prime Minister commented that “this year’s Parliamentary Review follows a significant year in British politics”, and this is reflected in the articles from leading journalists and best-practice representatives alike. The PM’s former cabinet colleague, Sir Eric Pickles, who was recently appointed chairman of the review, said: “It has never been more important for Government to hear the views of business and the public sector in a constructive forum. It is also a vital time to share best practice and progress.” The Parliamentary Review director, Daniel Yossman, concurred, saying: ‘Whitehill Spindle Tools and other hardworking organisations from across the country have come together to make this year’s review possible. Sharing knowledge and insight with both peers and Government is essential work, and I am delighted that this year’s review will reach every corner of the British economy. “It’s always a real joy to hear from policymakers who tell me that something they have read in the review has had an effect on their thinking. “It is my belief that innovation is contagious, if only it is given the platform to spread. It is the review’s purpose to provide this platform, and I am confident we are fulfilling it.” An e-copy of The Parliamentary Review can be viewed at www. theparliamentaryreview.co.uk/ editions/manufacturing-services/ manufacturing-general

SCM UK open house event Designed to change how its customers think about manufacturing, SCM UK’s upcoming open house will show visitors how to improve business towards Industry 4.0 standards, and to implement innovative yet simple production automation, handling and software solutions, to gain the edge over competitors. The event also creates a platform to connect with key industry partners including software, tooling, edgebanding tapes, finance and more, all under SCM UK’s Bulwell showroom roof.

WINDOWS AND DOORS Five-axis machines Winner of the Gold Star Award at the AWISA exhibition, SCM says its Accord range of five-axis machines eliminates the need for aggregates. The use of simple and intuitive programming gives users extreme versatility. Visitors to the open house will be able to see production of sash windows and arches on the MATIC automatic table using SCM Maestro or Kosmosoft Archimede softwares, and appreciating the unrivalled finish of Oertli and Leitz tooling. On the new innovation-packed Morbidelli CNC Author M100, visitors will see door production with tandem loading, quick squaring, lock recess and hinges execution in three-axis mode. Demonstrations also include up to 6m-long stair strings as a demonstration of Author flexibility and capability. Window centre and moulders With productivity close to 30 windows per shift, the tried-and-tested combination of SCM’s automatic moulder Superset NT and window centre Dogma confirm how new touchscreen interfaces and traditional machining processes offer great quality, optimal precision and high productivity in a simple and reliable manner. Also likely to be of interest to solid wood companies will be Classical machines and sanders for all needs and investment capabilities – a Profiset 40 four sided moulder, Ti120 Class spindle moulder, S520 surface planer, Sandya 1, 300 and 600 sanders, and a Si350 table saw.

FURNITURE AND PANEL MANUFACTURING Panel nesting SCM maintains that when its competitors were only sizing panels with beam saws, SCM and Morbidelli were already nesting for small and large manufacturers. SCM Ergons have been producing,

often on multiple shifts, for over 20 years. SCM nesting is now getting even faster, with tooling solutions allowing cutting speeds of up to 50m/min. The Universal 3122 cell with loading and unloading offers flexibility and productivity backed by its Maestro Nest software, with optimisation paths to increase productivity up to 30%. For those that lack space in their factory, the company’s SCM Pratix S22 is a leader in compact high-speed nesting with small ticket price and high productivity, starting from footprints of less than 20m2. At the open house, visitors can test both CNCs to understand which solution meets their needs.

In Nottingham, visitors will be able to see the K560 complete with AirFusion technology, view and touch its seamless joint line, or check the industrial-level Solution XD with its multi-edge automatic changeover system. Any type of contemporary material – acrylic, aluminum edges with a protective film, high gloss materials, sanded or un-sanded wood and laser edges – can be applied, with total control from the onboard touchscreen computer. Stefani has invented and developed many of the edgebanding solutions later embraced by other manufacturers, and that has guaranteed its precision and reliability since 1952.

Edgebanding The company says that Stefani is the UK’s favourite soft-forming edgebander. Its J-Shape solution has also been awarded product of the year in several shows around the world. Edgebanding expertise in SCM starts from the small shop – Minimax Me20, 35 and 40 are the entry level variants of an impressive range of edgebanders.

Drilling For automatic, fast and flexible drilling, visitors will see the Morbidelli Cyflex SR – a compact machine with vertical feeding of the panels to process all boring and routing patterns on nested or beam saw sized panels. SCM says that its impressive set up, drilling speed and precision will bring immediate benefit where heavy drilling is required. SCM’s three-day open house event takes place from 9am to 5pm on 7-9th November at Blenheim House, Camberley Road, Bulwell, Nottingham NG6 8UW. Open house success for AMS Advanced Machinery Services’ (AMS) recent open house event went very well – which was unsurprising, given that the Skeffington company had some 35 machines primed and ready to demonstrate to visitors.

AMS director Stephen McGloin reported a steady stream of visitors from the local region, and some making a considerable journey from further afield to visit the event. With new stock arriving weekly, the 10-year-old business is well known for its impressive rebuilt Wadkin planer moulders, but it is the Wadkin Bursgreen products which took centre stage at the company’s packed showroom. The company supplies a comprehensive range of furniture, woodworking and joinery machinery, and is widely recognised for its service setup, with excellent coverage across the UK. In addition, the company offers installation options, training and machine service and repair. AMS is also a firm believer in training its own future talent, and since January has taken on five apprentices, some whom have already started on advanced courses. Currently, the apprentices are working on the rebuilding of a planer/moulder under the watchful eye of South Leicester College. As well as the Wadkin Bursgreen machines, AMS also had a Masterwood five-axis CNC machining centre on display, along with Rojek

sliding table and panel saws and ancillary products including tooling and adhesives. In all 35 machines were on show, all of them ready to demonstrate to those interested. Significant business was carried out with customers attending from throughout the UK and Ireland. At times the demand was such that potential customers had to avail themselves of the pleasing hospitality whilst waiting for their demonstrations. Space was at a premium and, although the premises were purpose-designed and built only a short while ago, AMS is planning an extension to both the offices and factory to cope with training demand, machinery rebuilds, spares, servicing and tooling. The company also presented a new automatic table saw, and two edgebanders from its recently-introduced range – the Compacta 4TR with corner trimming, and a Basic C Edge model at the lower end. 0844 844 9949 advancedmachinery.co.uk

Intelligent software drives the a three axis robotic core and there is a eightposition automatic tool changer. Biesse says that the Opera R is the only technology of this kind performing sanding of non-flat panels automatically and with the highest quality results. The Opera R is also ideal for flat panels as well as shaker style cabinet doors with different levels continuos production possible. This impressive addition offers levels of machinability, precision and quality never before obtained with the technology of this sector.

Open house success for Daltons Wadkin Daltons Wadkin’s Wood & Panel Machinery Show, held from 3-5th October in Nottingham, was “the biggest and most successful” yet, according to director and show organiser Alex Dalton.

“I believe we have the strongest machinery portfolio of any woodworking machinery supplier in the UK and Ireland,” says Alex. “Our regular inhouse shows are an excellent opportunity to showcase our range of panel and solid wood processing machines. This year we had more visitors and more orders taken than at any of our previous shows.” With some 25 machines available for display and demonstration in the company’s Nottingham showrooms, the exhibition offered wide coverage of Daltons Wadkin’s extensive product range, from classical machines to CNC. Visitors travelled from all parts of the UK, and were able to view live demonstrations on Salvador straight and angle programmable crosscutting systems, Cehisa edgebanders, Kuper planer/ moulders, Kimla CNC routers, Elcon vertical and Altendorf sliding table

panel saws, a selection of Wadkin classical machines and a new Stenner ST100RS band resaw. By the end of the show the company had chalked up significant orders for a number of its major brands including Kimla, Cehisa, Stenner, Altendorf, Kuper and Wadkin, lending a major boost to its autumn sales pitch. Alex was pleased with both the results and the effort put in by the sales and demonstration teams. “We really pushed the boat out this year,” says Alex. “The display, the extensive range of machines on show and the opportunity to meet so many existing and new customers was everything we had hoped for. “I would like to thank all visitors to the show in making it such a success. For anyone that did not manage to make it, our showroom doors remain open for working demonstrations and expert advice.” 0115 986 5201 daltonswadkin.com

Homag UK’s innovative Open House attracts record visitor numbers A wide range of machinery was on show for visitors at Homag UK’s September Open House event – and record numbers turned out to appreciate the company’s innovation technology. Homag’s packed showroom featured an impressive new shop-floor breakout area for meetings and refreshments where less formal discussions could take place whilst in closer proximity to the machinery. But the main reason so many visitors made the journey to Homag UK’s Castle Donnington premises was to get hands-on with some of the world’s finest technology for furniture and joinery manufacturing. For businesses of all sizes, the event had plenty to offer from entrylevel classical machines through to more advanced, powerful technology for the larger business. At the show there were 18 models on demonstration including solutions for panel production, edge banding and a wide range of

CNC technology keeping visitors engaged. One of the stars of the show was Homag’s impressive intelliGuide system operating on an HPP 300 panel saw. The LED lighting is no gimmick, rather this intuitive option helps operators using colour-coded signals therefore eliminating costly errors. Making its UK debut at the show was Homag’s all new automatic spraying machine the GSF 100. This machine is ideal for those looking to improve on a traditional manual spray booth set-up and it will certainly increase throughput and produce a top quality finish every time. Homag also demonstrated the SWT 225 CH wide belt sander, a highly versatile sanding solution

and one of many models that Homag offers. Complete with touchscreen control and two sanding heads, this machine calibrates, finish sands and de-nibs lacquered parts with ease at the touch of a button. Another impressive machine which garnered much attention was the Venture 115M, a compact and versatile, entry level five-axis CNC processing centre. Its small footprint is ideal for the smaller workshop application where space is at a premium, but the company needs the consistent high quality capability and productivity. Speaking of space saving opportunities, Homag’s BHX 200 drilling and routing processing centre takes up just 10m2 and is a highly capable machine which

is blessed with a total of 36 high speed drilling spindles and delivers impressive levels of precision. Homag’s best-selling compact BHX 050 and BHX 055 machining centres processing panel were also on show. These powerhouses use between 8-13 vertical high-speed drilling spindles, all conforming to Homag’s own quick change drilling system. A real time-saver that offers true value to the customer. The company’s impressive Vantage 100/510 processing centre was also on display, demonstrating its versatility and efficiency in converting raw boards into fully machined components. The gantrystyle nesting CNC was be teamed with an outfeed conveyor belt, providing a seamless automatic throughfeed cell that maximises

material handling. Driven by a 12HP (9kW) HSK spindle, the routing head works effortlessly across a 3100 x 1550mm matrix table for the highest precision every time. A range of edge banding options was also being demonstrated, these included the compact Ambition 1120 FC. Although an entry-level model it is packed with features typically reserved for higher spec machines, such as pre-milling, hot melt adhesive tape application up to 3m/m, and corner rounding, scraping and finishing. Stepping up to the powerful Ambition 1230 airTec, users can

access zero glue line solutions. This edge bander is perfect for batch size production, bespoke or higher volume applications. Homag’s current premium edge banding option is its Ambition 2470 which is designed specifically for industrial scale production. This high speed machine can achieve feed speeds of 25m/m and is available with either airTec’s zero joint technology for invisible joints or PUR adhesive for ultimate edge quality. In terms of production solutions, Homag showed its MDE 120 carcass clamp and the imposing

VKS 250 box making cell with its 3D scanner. The clamp can be used inline or standalone. The VKS 250 cuts boxes to specific sizes as measured on the scanner. This creates the most efficient box size eliminating wasted space and the need for packaging fillers, thus keeping costs to a minimum. Two other critical elements which visitors were able to look into at the event were the all-important issues of software and finance. Homag has an array of software packages for product design, 3D rendering, estimating, ordering CAM interface and CNC programming. Specialists were on hand throughout the event to demonstrate the varying options and take interested paties on a ‘test drive’ of solutions such as woodWOP, woodCAD|CAM, MagiCut as well as the world’s first industry 4.0 platform – Tapio. The Homag finance team was also on hand offering advice on purchase plan options and providing individual, tailored solutions where required. Following the show, Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director at Homag said: “We were absolutely delighted with the number of visitors that we

19

welcomed to Homag UK during our Open House exhibition. This was by far our best event ever. The mood was positive from all of our visitors and we are certainly in exciting times right now. It was particularly pleasing to see a high number of first time visitors to Homag. “Many I spoke with were pleasantly amazed by the array of equipment we had on display, all of which was fully operational. We enjoyed a good order intake at the event and our sales team are busy following up the large number of new enquiries that we were given by visitors. I would like to thank everyone that came to see us and for helping make our Open House event an enjoyable one!” All in all, the Homag Open House is a terrific event with all the technical and professional experience on hand to make the visitors time spent there very worthwhile. For those who missed the event, but wish to discuss upgrading their production, contact Adele Hunt on 01332 856424 to make arrangements to view the showroom and discuss opportunities for innovation with Homag UK. 01332 856500 homag.com

A new version of WorkPlan, the ERP and production management solution from Vero Software, is now available, dedicated to the woodworking industry.

New version of WorkPlan dedicated to woodworkers

WorkPlan is already widely acclaimed in the automotive and aeronautics sectors, and this new version has been specifically designed for the carpentry, woodworking and fittings sector. Vero has drawn on the vast experience gained through its Cabinet Vision CAD/CAM and Alphacam CAM software solutions, which have been leaders in this sector for over 20 years, to create a fully-integrated CAD/CAM/ ERP system for the woodworking industry’s specific requirements. The development came after Cabinet Vision wanted to expand its range of services to over 10,000 active clients in North America, and it was agreed to offer a completely integrated solution by incorporating the sales activity and production control management modules from the WorkPlan software. Within a period of just a few months, the sales and technical teams developed the interfaces

that were required to allow technical data synchronisation and the creation of quotations in WorkPlan from information generated in the quotations menu (design and price calculations in Cabinet Vision). Design information originating from Cabinet Vision is automatically fed into WorkPlan. The list of panels to be cut is clearly identified, along with – for each – the list of produced parts and the CNC programs generated by Cabinet Vision’s Screen-To-Machine module or Alphacam. Panel supply management is simplified by using purchase orders or the stock, with prior reservation if necessary. Labels generated by Cabinet Vision allow production to be monitored at each stage of the

cutting process, by reading the panels’ barcode. WorkPlan’s business manager Christophe Mas says: “The seamless integration of the two software applications will allow users to improve their productivity by optimising project job tracking, supply management and stock control, along with production monitoring.” New functions have been developed for this dedicated woodworking-focused version of WorkPlan, including packing

management. “This will be available in the 2018 R1 release, and all users will be able to benefit, whatever their sector of activity,” says Christophe. The woodworking version of WorkPlan was previewed at the AWFS trade fair in Las Vegas last summer, which led to interest from a large number of projects on Vero’s stand – over 30 concrete projects have now been finalised. CAD+T is a leading supplier of complete software solutions for joineries and interior fit-out companies.

Next-generation CNC technology from CAD+T CAD+T drafting software is based on AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor, and offers specialised add-ons which focus on the requirements of the interior fit-out industry. Besides drafting and ERP solutions, CAD+T offers nextgeneration CNC technology. So far, CNC data has been either programmed manually directly on the machine, or imported from AutoCAD or Inventor in DXF

format, which requires a great deal of manual input before the CNC program is ready. This process has changed, thanks to CAD+T’s CNC technology. The CAD+T CAM interface enables the user to import all the required CNC information directly from the CAD+T drafting system. Based on the material configuration specified in the technical drawings, the system will automatically read the geometry of the parts, as well as

the machining details required. The manufacturing method necessary to assign the correct oversize parameters, tools, starting points and work steps will be sent automatically to the machine through the CAD+T interface. With all this information, the software will generate the correct file and file extension for every machine as required. One of its specialities is the NC drive of large tools, which take the

most logical sawing process for five-axis machines – for example, making every cut from the top, or following material-dependent work steps. CAD+T offers interfaces to all current three- and five-axis CNC machines, as well as tools for edgebanding and nesting. Nesting in 3D, which is required for carcasses with mitres, is also available. cadt-solutions.com

Symphony Coatings has announced its exclusive partnership with impra, to supply the impra-lan exterior joinery range in the UK.

Presenting impra, superior products for timber Symphony Coatings, a premier independent UK supplier of professional and technicallyadvanced wood finishes and metal coatings, has been chosen by impra to be its exclusive partner for the professional impra-lan range. impra is a German brand that offers high-quality surface coating systems and timber impregnation protection from Rütgers Organics. Established over 140 years ago, it has become a market leader through continual research and innovation. impra-lan is the company’s professional range of water-based coatings for external timber. Manfred Oberreiter, impra’s European sales director, says: “Following our great success with the range in Germany and Europe we are very pleased to be in partnership with Symphony Coatings to supply our impra-lan range in the UK. Symphony are able provide full national coverage with rapid colour matching and full technical support to our many customers.” James Nuttall, Symphony Coatings’ group purchasing manager, adds: “We have been selling impra wood coatings in several of our depots for many years, and extensive testing and feedback from customers has

shown the range to have excellent performance in even the most challenging of environments. “Through our partnership with impra, we have been able to expand our capability and supply the market-leading range from all of our 10 depots across the country, with full local colour matching and next-day delivery.” The impra-lan range is a waterbased system for industrial surface coating of timber, and has been designed to give a long-lasting and attractive finish, whatever the species, colour or application method. The impra-Ian range is able to offer high protection against UV damage and wood rot, providing a higher-quality finish over a longer lifetime. Symphony Coatings’ rapid colour-matching service is available across the UK, meaning customers can get any colour their project requires, from internationallyrecognised colour standards to a bespoke colour match. impra’s translucent systems accentuate the wood’s properties, whilst giving it an attractive natural look and protection from the elements. Where this finish is required, Symphony recommends the impra-lan-Grund G100 Primer and impra-lan-Lasur S100 Topcoat systems. Impressive results have been achieved with the impra

translucent system, and the range has been certified in accordance with DIN EN 927-2 guidelines. impra-lan-Grund G100 transparent wood stain enhances the natural grain of timber. The stain can deluge by dipping or spraying, and is tintable to nearly any colour required. G100 does not contain biocides, and protects against mould and algae. Its low grain raising provides strong adhesion and is suitable for dimensionally stable and unstable wooden elements such as windows and exterior cladding. The film is moisture regulating, breathable, dries evenly and is weather resistant soon after application. impra-lan-Lasur S100 is the highsolids, transparent, water-based, film-forming intermediate and top coat. It has a very high level of transparency and a silk gloss finish. In woods rich in ingredients, impra’s Opaque systems offer good protection against discoloration in conjunction with their isolating primers. Wood has to be protected against the elements so problems do not arise – should moisture ever penetrate, the isolating primer and intermediate coating impralan-Füller F350 offer a dependable protection against discoloration and wood extractives. Wood protection and priming are reached in just one step, saving time and money.

Primers are the link between wooden surfaces and coating. impra-lan-Vorlack V100 is a white intermediate coat with good isolating properties against soluble timber ingredients, in a one-coat application. impra-lan-Vorlack V100 is ideal for hard and soft wood, doors and window frames. The Opaque topcoats are particularly tough, and give wooden windows and doors a significantly greater durability. impra-lanDecklack D100 is a top coat with extremely high covering properties and extended resistance to weathering. It is highly elastic, block resistant and very good at covering edges. Symphony Coatings can tint to any colour desired, including RAL, NCS, Pantone and more. 0800 840 8201 symphonycoatings.co.uk

Whitehill Spindle Tools’ latest investment in a new state-of-the-art CNC robotic grinder allows the company to produce carbide knives around the clock, giving it the ability to produce accurate, precision-ground knives that are dispatched within 48 hours.

Whitehill Tooling catalyses joinery manufacture

Disposable tip tooling for all types of solid wood profiling has revolutionised joinery manufacture – particularly for SMEs – and has given every company the ability to attain production capacities and finish quality that were once only available to large producers. Solid carbide disposable tips guarantee finish quality by being easy and fast to replace as soon as the knife shows signs of wear, ensuring tools are always sharp, and with a positive location that

will give exactly the same knife placement every time. Tool diameter is always constant with disposable knives, which reduces set-up times to a minimum and, when used in conjunction with zero setting as in a window system, only one set-up is required to run all the tools in a whole system. Whitehill understands that grinding accuracy in knife production is crucial. This latest investment leaves its two existing CNC robotic grinders to be used

solely for HSS knife production, also working 24 hours a day, six days a week, producing accurate profile knives within the same impressive short lead times. Whitehill’s increased capacity in both carbide and HSS knives further strengthens its profile as one of the UK’s leading tooling manufacturers, and the firm prides itself on accuracy, precision, technical expertise and fast response time. 01582 736881 sales@whitehill-tools.com

Is it more advantageous to invest in fully-customised CNC routers, or will standardised off-the-shelf alternative machines be sufficient to meet production requirements? This is a question that companies in the woodworking industry generally – and the cabinetmaking and furniture manufacturing sectors in particular – will inevitably ask, says AXYZ International …

Determining the value of investment in customised CNC routers The decision is not an easy one, and a number of factors have to be considered before determining which of the two options is the most appropriate in relation to individual requirements. In this article, leading global manufacturer and distributor of high-performance CNC routing, engraving and cutting machines, AXYZ International, examines some of these factors and offers advice on how to avoid pitfalls that can occur during the purchasing process. Every company endeavours to demonstrate due diligence when deciding between a fullycustomised CNC machine and an off-the-shelf one. The evaluation process can be quite complex, given the fact that customised CNC routers have evolved rapidly over the past decade to offer considerably more functionality. The focus of potential buyers has to be on both the present and future requirements of their businesses in the context of a router’s capabilities, the quality of the finished output (particularly in relation to edge finishing), production volumes, the effective use of time and labour and the contribution the machine will make to the future growth and prosperity of the business. Tried-and-tested traditional methods of woodworking, furniture manufacturing and more specialised cabinetmaking have existed for years. The drawback, however, has always been the commitment of time and labour, particularly when it came to cutting and shaping complex arch pieces or doorways. A drill press or hand drill were then the only options available to carry out this kind of complex work, but these were rapidly replaced following the advent of the CNC router, which dramatically

altered these work processes by increasing and speeding up production capabilities. At that point, off-the-shelf routers seemed a logical option, particularly for small or start-up companies that basically either ruled out any notion of customisation and perceived CNC routers as being too expensive in the context of the bottom line of the business, or failed to appreciate the potential that existed with customised machines in terms of business growth and profitability in both the short and long term. Such thinking exists today within some small and/or start-up companies, primarily due to the lower initial investment requirement on off-theshelf machines. However, the continually expanding capabilities of customised CNC routers has now changed this perception, with the availability of a plethora of additional and highly-advanced machine enhancements that enable engagement with highly complex and/or industrial-grade applications, for which off-the-shelf routers would be totally unsuited in view of their limited capabilities. This would explain the growing interest in NBM (Nested-Based Manufacturing) by small or startup companies, which now view fully-customised CNC routers as an opportunity for expansion, business growth and increased profitability. In stark contrast, off-the-shelf standardised routers are very limited in their use. They are invariably sourced via the internet from a third-party reseller or distributor, with no direct access to the manufacturer when technical support or necessary spare parts are required, and offer little or no operator training. They also incorporate only the basic standard production

Some key considerations to be made before arriving at a decision to purchase either type of machine are: • I f a lower-cost machine is opted for, make sure it will deliver precisely what is required for the work being undertaken and the need for future business growth •D o not misjudge the type of tooling required to process widely differing materials – particularly since some tools have been designed for highlyspecialised routing, cutting and shaping applications •B e aware of the parts and accessories required to maximise production to prevent incurring additional costs later •C heck the level of support that would be available (it is more efficient in terms of cost and maintenance when the supplier of the machine is also the technical support adviser, particularly since third-party providers are invariably more expensive and less reliable) •D efine supplier responsibilities by making sure the supplier offers comprehensive training programmes and can maintain spare parts availability •M ake sure the machine purchased is capable of future upgrades in order to take advantage of new technological advances and their capabilities

tools (invariably just a single routing head, as one example), cannot use different production tools and controllers, and have insufficient torque to undertake heavier and more complex work, as well as being unable to carry out vital machine upgrades. Whilst there is an understandable reason for small or start-up business owners to initially opt for an off-the-shelf machine in spite of these drawbacks, the dramatically enhanced capabilities of fully-customised CNC routers can now be harnessed without unduly impacting the bottom line of any business, regardless of size and financial status. 01952 291600 axyz.co.uk

British Manufacturers of modern wood energy systems have a broad product range available The Talbott brand has been established since the mid-seventies where they have been manufacturing a broad range of heating systems designed for using wood waste. Their original manual fed, air heating units the ‘Talbott T range’ are still the most popular today. Their manual fed air heaters are available in four sizes designed to heat anything from 1,500ft2 up to 10,000ft2, depending on the insulation properties of the building. The units are easy to operate and they simply distribute hot air for space heating throughout the factory, to which ducting can be incorporated to target specific areas. They are exempt appliances under the Clean Air Act for use within smoke control areas. Talbotts has installed thousands of these over the years, where customers have come back repeatedly for further units or to upgrade in line with increases in production. As these units are kept in stock Talbotts can offer a quick turnaround for supply and installation. An automatic version of the T range is available to heat larger spaces and utilise wood, MDF and chipboard dust, along with shredded wood off cuts. This being a simple, cost effective solution to factory wood waste disposal and heating. Talbotts latest success is the deployment of their ‘MWE’ Modern Wood Energy range which as standard incorporate automatic de-ash, heat exchange cleaning, oxygen trim ‘lambda control’, all to ensure efficient, clean and complete combustion. There are four sizes available in the range rated at 199, 300, 600 and 999kW with larger sizes expected to be available soon. All of these units are boiler based and eligible for the Governments renewable heat incentive scheme where they have RHI emissions certification. They are designed to use such wood based fuels as MDF, Chipboard, Hardwood and Softwoods. Talbotts now have a number of accredited installations where the support of the RHI has enabled such investments to ensure the most efficient and clean combustion of on site generated wood waste, along with massive reductions in fossil fuel usage. This having a positive impact on the environment due to reducing companies carbon footprint.

The renewable heat incentive scheme is financial support provided by the Government where the end user gets paid for every kW of eligible heat used in their premises. This may be for factory space heating, heating for offices or a process. Therefore companies involved in wood based manufacturing industries such as kitchen, furniture makers or timber processors can not only benefit from a reduction in wood waste disposal and energy costs but also from a cash back incentive paid by the Government. A quick pay back from the initial capital investment is achieved and once accredited to the scheme, end users can earn year on year, up to 20 years in total. Talbotts are one of the only manufacturers where they have RHI emissions certification for a wide range of wood based fuels such as MDF, Chipboard, MFC, OSB, Softwood, Hardwood, Particle Board, Plywood, Wood Chips and Wood Pellets. Their boilers have been fully tested in order to achieve this certification ensuring they meet the most stringent emissions and quality criteria. Talbotts have built up a large customer base where they are accredited to the RHI and to name a few; Biker Group, DFS, AW Champion, Allport Packaging, Hills Panel Products, Welcome Furniture, Vincent Timber, Sven Christiansen, Select Timber, Midland Building Products and most recently B D Living part of the prestigious Barratt Developments PLC.

Since 1958, building over 400,000 houses, Barratt have become one of the best known and largest house builders in the UK and have achieved 5 star house builder status for the last 8 years. Barratt Development PLC includes Barratt Homes, David Wilson Homes, Barratt London and Wilson Bowden Developments. Combined, these businesses build and sell thousands of new homes in towns and rural areas, helping meet Britain’s growing housing needs and providing homes for all incomes, including shared ownership. Approximately 65 people are employed at the 25,000ft2 BD Living Coalville factory. Previously BD living were disposing of 270 tonnes of wood waste each year and their factory was heated by a gas system. BD Living wanted to reduce the cost both financially and environmentally for disposing of their wood waste and decided to invest into a Talbott ‘MWE’ biomass boiler and Untha Wood shredder. They also took the opportunity to upgrade their wood waste extraction system, supplied by Air Plants Dust Extraction Ltd, Leicester. They opted for a Talbott MWE300 solution, Untha LR700 shredder with pipe work distribution supplied by Air Plants Heating. Talbotts and Air Plants worked closely to manage the full turnkey project in order to ensure minimum disruption to production and smooth operation. Talbotts have dedicated RHI, service, spare parts and technical departments to ensure customers needs are responded to efficiently. They have a broad product range available consisting of fully automated comprehensive biomass boiler solutions, automatic and simple manual fed air space heating solutions and Untha wood shredders, to which they are UK distributors. Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS) have commissioned a new dust extraction filter unit and energy-saving Ecogate system for John Turner Construction Group’s joinery division at its manufacturing facility in Preston, Lancashire.

DCS retrofit for John Turner Construction

DCS installed a 20,400m3/hr capacity NFSZ3000 modular filter unit for John Turner Construction Group

Established over a century ago, the company has been responsible for construction of some of the most prominent buildings in the North West of England, including the iconic Preston Guild Hall, in 1972, as well as works at many of the region’s well-known ecclesiastical buildings and educational establishments. Today, with a turnover in excess of £75 million, and divisions covering Construction, Maintenance, Joinery Manufacturing and Electrical Services, the group operates across the North West from premises in Preston, Liverpool and Manchester. The Joinery Division is BWF accredited, employs a highly skilled workforce of traditionally trained craftsmen, and specialises in the manufacture of bespoke joinery products including architectural joinery and window frames, wall panelling and mouldings, stairs and balustrades, and boardroom furniture. The previous dust filter unit, also installed by Dust Control Systems, had performed commendably for the past 25 years, but the time had come to invest in a modern, efficient and cost-effective replacement. Following discussions with Peter Newton, John Turner’s divisional joinery manager, DCS sales director, Melvyn Bathgate, put forward a proposal to replace the old filter with an NFSZ3000 modular filter unit. Powered by a low-noise, 37kW direct drive main fan, and benefitting from high-performance Superbag polyester filter bags, the space-saving modular filter unit is capable of providing an air volume capacity of 20,400m3/hr. The unit is installed at ground level, with filtered dust and woodwaste discharged pressure-free, by means of a rotary valve, before being transferred by a closed-loop waste transfer system into an enclosed collection trailer – the

waste is then recycled by a local farmer. The joinery facility at John Turner Construction occupies around 11,000ft2 and is equipped with all the usual high-powered production machinery to be found in any typical joinery workshop. However, as is the case at most joinery shops, it is unusual for all the machines to be running at the same time. To maximise extraction efficiency, DCS have supplied and installed an energy-saving Ecogate extraction optimisation system, controlled by an Ecogate PowerMASTER unit with integrated variable speed drive inverter unit. Variable speed drive technology maximises energy savings by providing continual adjustment of the extraction fan speed; matching the ever changing demand as the various machines come on or off line. Installing Ecogate on an existing extraction system can often avoid the need for upgrading or installing additional fans when new production machinery is installed, and new systems can be designed up to 40% smaller than with conventional technology. At John Turner’s, DCS were required to connect the new filter unit to the existing ductwork arrangement and automatic Ecogate dampers were retro-fitted into the existing ductwork runs

serving machines on the shop floor. “With the inclusion of Ecogate technology, the average extraction volume at John Turner Construction will be reduced by over 20%” explains Melvyn Bathgate, “and our design engineers conservatively predict annual energy savings of over 50%.” The bespoke nature of the work undertaken at John Turner’s also necessitates the use of a number of smaller hand tools and, to provide appropriate extraction for these individual tools, DCS designed and installed a secondary extraction system with a series of twin take-off points – 63mm diameter flexible hoses, with a push-fit fixing, are used to connect hand tools to the extraction points, as and when required. A total of five twin extraction points are provided, and up to three of these points can be used at any one time; providing extraction for up to six different machine tools. To complete the project, DCS have also installed a return air manifold, with manually operated dampers, allowing clean warm air to be returned to the factory during colder winter months or discharged to atmosphere when not required. The system has also been brought up to ATEXrecommended standards by the inclusion of a CARZ back-pressure flap valve; in the unlikely event of a dust explosion, the valve is designed to prevent the effects of a pressure wave and flames travelling from the filter, back along ductwork, and into the factory. 0800 040 7116 dcslimited.co.uk

Homag machinery user Atlas Washroom Systems is a £2.5m turnover, privately-owned company specialising in supplying washroom cubicles and systems to both the private and public sectors.

Homag helps Atlas Washrooms almost double capacity Founded in 2001, Atlas Washroom Systems has continually invested a substantial amount of time and resources into developing washroom systems that provide fit-for-purpose solutions across all market sectors. The strong company is customer-focused, and takes great pride in supplying first-class products on time and within budget, using only the highest quality materials, components and machinery in its 20,000ft2 facility in West Auckland. When it comes to that machinery, MD Gerald Shervington cannot speak too highly of Homag: “I’ve been in the industry for over 30 years and I’ve always found Homag to be very, very proficient in every aspect, from sales through to service and everything in between,” he says. “The machinery and the people are exceptional. In 2003, shortly after we started Atlas, we decided to invest in a Homag CHP 320 Optimat beam saw because we wanted a machine that we could not only rely on 100%, but that would also deliver the first-class quality we demand. The backbone of the business “That first saw from Homag gave us the foundation to build the successful business we have today. Prior to getting that saw we suffered with production disruptions because of unreliable machinery. So, in 2011, when we needed to add another saw to increase our capacity, it didn’t take too much research before we settled on a new Homag 380 HPP beam saw. “Those two saws formed the backbone of our business, and although the original CHP 320 saw was still working reliably up to the end of 2015, by 2016 we needed to increase our capacity yet again. As a consequence, we bought a Homag HPP 300 to replace the CHP 320” High quality, reliability and great service “One of the real benefits of working with a company like Homag is the quality of their staff. Everyone you deal with is not only friendly and professional, but also straight-talking – you know exactly where you stand and you can trust them, they never try to pull the wool over your eyes. “Our area manager, John Shepherd, is a case in point. I’ve known John for almost 30 years, and a more honest and knowledgeable person you couldn’t wish to meet. When John gives us his advice, we know he has the best interests of Atlas Washrooms at heart. “His expertise came to the fore late in 2016 when we were looking to invest in an edge bander. Our original machine was 20 years old and, not surprisingly, was slow and unreliable. Also the quality just wasn’t consistent or up to the standards our customers expect from Atlas. “John invited us along to the Castle Donington

The Homag HPP 300 with label printer helps Atlas maintain control and efficiencies

showroom and gave us demonstrations of three or four different edge banders, from entry-level to mass production models. For each machine, John highlighted the features that would be of particular benefit to Atlas Washrooms. “In the end, we followed John’s advice, investing in a new Homag Highflex 1650 edge bander. I have to say, it was a great call. The quality from the Highflex 1650 is excellent and it has almost doubled our capacity. With the old model we often had to hand-finish the edges, but the new machine is fantastic, we never have to hand-finish the edges despite the higher running speed. “The key advantage of this machine is its ability to automatically change from one set-up to the next with repeatable accuracy. Also, Homag’s powerTouch controller makes operating the machine simple, easy and accurate.” Installation, training and service “Another benefit of dealing with Homag is the precision of everything they do – the German engineering heritage really does shine through. Installation of the machines has always been a very easy process. At all times, it is planned down to the last detail and consequently runs like clockwork. “As an example, the Highflex 1650 edge bander was delivered, installed and commissioned in one day, and following the training from the Homag engineers our guys were even edging a few panels on it that day – it was very impressive. “The Homag engineers are very professional. They understand the challenges of learning new control systems for machinery and are highly skilled at training people so they can get up to speed as fast as possible. The new touchscreen

control panels also help to make operating the machines very easy, even for new machine operators.” Financial support “The one thing we love about Homag is that it’s a one-stop shop. You can get anything you need from them and they are always willing to help. For instance, Homag offers great financial support if you need it when buying machinery. The deals they negotiate are pretty competitive, too. “When we bought the Highflex in February this year, we looked at different options, but Homag’s finance deal was the best, ahead of one of the major global banks. Homag made the whole process straightforward, taking the pain out of arranging funding which was great for us. “Since we began dealing with Homag back in 2003, they haven’t put a foot wrong. All their equipment is extremely reliable, solidly built and delivers excellent quality day-in, day-out. This has allowed us to double our business over the last few years, and with our present equipment we are on course to double it again over the next three to four years. “Almost certainly, we will achieve return on investment in less than three years, but more importantly for us, we know when we turn on the machines each day they will work and produce first-class products without fail. And, on the very rare occasion there is a hitch, Homag’s online support gets us up and running within minutes. It is a fantastic service,” concludes Gerald. Dassault Falcon Jet digitalises its value chain Marked by a relentless pursuit of excellence and innovation, building some of the most advanced business jets on the market, Dassault Falcon Jet has earned a reputation as one of the finest aircraft companies in the world. The company focuses on highquality production to personalise business jets, meeting customers’ exacting requirements. The process begins in France, where the airframe, engine and avionics are assembled, ending in Little Rock, where the aircraft is finished with a custom livery and interior handcrafted to precise specifications. Due to its customers’ ability to change interior design specifications during completion, Dassault Falcon Jet needed greater flexibility to meet customer requests faster and more efficiently. Design for manufacturability is a major consideration due to aggressive cost targets, and a chief reason behind the company’s digital specification-to-delivery process, which is the most advanced in the

industry. The Little Rock upholstery shop has recently undergone significant reorganisation to align the production of aircraft interiors with the digital specification-to-delivery process. After first streamlining its design studio with DesignConcept 3D design and costing software, Dassault Falcon Jet turned to Lectra to revolutionise its cutting room with the acquisition of a Versalis digital leather cutting solution. Following a successful proof of concept, Dassault Falcon Jet progressively implemented six DesignConcept workstations, laying the foundation for a fully digital development process. Following Dassault Falcon Jet’s switch to 3D design and prototyping, the company turned its efforts to increasing efficiency and productivity in the upholstery shop. Acquisition of a Versalis has enabled the customer to extend the digital value chain from seat design through to leather cutting execution. Now Dassault Falcon Jet can develop patterns using

DesignConcept prototyping software, and directly export 3D data into the Versalis digital leather cutting solution. Powered by data intelligence and advanced cut preparation software, Versalis eliminates variation and reduces the number of over-cuts to optimise yield on expensive full-grain leather. The advanced cutting technology incorporates hide scanning and laser projection to give operators a high degree of control over the placement of parts. By eliminating the deformation of cut parts, Dassault Falcon Jet has achieved a substantial improvement

in quality. Leather cut execution is now more accurate, with a rate of rejected pieces approaching zero. The upholstery shop’s leather yield has furthermore increased from 5% to 10%. With the addition of Versalis, Dassault Falcon Jet now benefits from an end-to-end digital process, with 3D design and prototyping, direct merging of data and digital cutting. The fully-automated Versalis enables Dassault Falcon Jet to deliver within budget by cutting costs, improving productivity and minimising waste. lectra.com

B&B Italia continues to pioneer with Lectra’s Versalis Research, innovation and quality are the founding values of B&B Italia. When Piero Ambrogio Busnelli established the company in 1966, he sought to transcend the limits of the traditional methods of upholstered furniture production. B&B’s appetite for innovation extends to the company’s production processes. B&B Italia’s desire to find the best way to produce its highquality, contemporary designs led the company to Lectra, and the two companies have been collaborating since 1987. B&B Italia sought to change not only its leather-cutting equipment, but also its production process, in order to boost overall productivity, increase efficiency and standardise quality. However, these changes had to coalesce with the elements of their process that would remain in place.

“A very knowledgeable Lectra team stepped in to help us analyse each step of our process, from hide selection to offloading, and identify the non-value added activities,” explains plant director Marco Piantoni. “The team immersed themselves in our reality, understood our needs and proposed a solution that adhered to B&B Italia’s mission of providing the highest quality products to our customers.” Following this analysis, Lectra recommended the Versalis offline solution. In the offline process, operators perform nesting, hide management and cutting activities in parallel, at separate workstations. Each stage is optimised to obtain the best results in terms of flow, efficiency and quality. “Separating the flaw identification phase from the cutting phase allows us to carefully choose the hides that comply with our quality standards without impacting cutting time. As a result, we can make significant gains in productivity and quality,” says Marco. Using this process marked a significant departure from B&B Italia’s previous process. To avoid disruption to production, Lectra experts helped the company prepare for the arrival of their new solutions. Operator training, assignment of leather quality zones, data collection and sharing of best practices were done with the arrival of the digitising station. Once the Versalis system

arrived, the only thing left to do was plug it in and begin. With this new offline process, B&B Italia has gained the flexibility to implement changes into the process during cutting, reduced lead time and gained a reliable source of data with which to measure performance. “After five months of using the offline process, we increased productivity by 30% and reduced material consumption by 3%,” says Marco. The benefits are also qualitative. “The offline process aligns with B&B Italia’s mission to provide its customers with the highest quality products. We can digitise hides immediately after reception, record the readings and give prompt feedback about hide quality to the supplier,” says Marco. This information is also used to improve the nesting process. Instead of nesting pieces on a hide-by-hide basis, multi-hide nesting software tests combinations of hides in the same work order to find the ‘winning combination’. “Lectra and B&B Italia share the same commitment to innovation, in products and processes. We consider Lectra an important partner – one that helps us understand how to improve the way we cut,” states Marco. “Once again, we are the first in Italy to use cutting-edge technology to have a better quality product,” concludes CEO Giorgio Busnelli. Long-established, High Wycombe-based trade supplier Isaac Lord stocks a considerable range of hinges and fittings from industry-leading brands such as Blum, Simonswerk, Rampa, Häfele and Carlisle Brass.

High quality hinges and fittings, both traditional and contemporary This breadth of quality products means of course that Isaac Lord is focused on only supplying high quality products that won’t let customers down. The company says it works closely with its suppliers to ensure that it is able to offer both traditional goods whilst also keeping items which keep up to date with the latest trends to suit customers’ varying projects. Hinges Traditional, high quality, solid drawn brass butt hinges have never gone out of fashion and still offer a strong and long-lasting solution for cabinets. These are now available in a wide range of finishes including satin and even black. These high quality hinges have evolved to cope with today’s high safety standards and are now available as long life, ball bearing, class 13 rated hinges for fire doors. Customers are invited to call Isaac Lord’s GAI accredited staff for advice on the suitability of a particular hinge for any given application. The kitchen cabinet hinge is now a highly complex piece of engineering and can give effortless service for many years. Blum’s soft closing Blumotion technology enables cabinet doors to shut with grace and ease, whilst its push-to-open TIP-ON system allows cupboard doors to remain handleless. Fittings One of the latest trends in kitchen cabinet fittings can be summarised with Blum’s Space Tower. A replacement for the traditional larder, full extension drawers enable the home owner easy access to all of their provisions in one cabinet. Gone are the days of dark larders where things are seemingly lost forever. Full extension drawers enable the user to access even the very back of the cabinet with ease and comfort. Whether stainless steel with glass side elements, or the simple lines of Legrabox free, this can now become an attractive piece of functional furniture at the heart of the kitchen. Whether its lift-up systems, soft close stays, catches, latches or knobs and handles, Isaac Lord has fittings to suit every possible application. Cabinet and furniture production still involves joining multiple pieces of wood together. Some

Blum’s exceptional quality fittings offer effortless performance

Traditional fittings include a range of shelving options

A class 13 hinge ideal for fire door application of the company’s customers still produce traditional hand cut dovetail joints, but there is a myriad of cabinet assembly fittings which each have their own unique features. Cam and dowel, KD blocks, JCBB bolts and insert nuts all allow the furniture to be delivered flat-packed and assembled on site. Despite use of electronic gadgets, books are just as popular and require shelving fittings to best display and access them. Surface mounted or flush bookcase strips offer impressive levels of adjustability, but support fittings such as

shelving studs can offer an attractive and strong alternative. Founded in 1892, Isaac Lord has grown to become one of the leading suppliers in the joinery and furniture industries and the company prides itself on being a one-stop-shop for all joinery and fitting needs. The company started as a traditional ironmonger, and that heritage has helped shape its business today. Isaac Lord still has a strong focus on ironmongery and the staff knowledge in that area is second to none. isaaclord.co.uk

Anyone looking for a larder unit that offers plenty of storage space, whose inner pull-outs can be planned and designed individually and that gives easy access to items from all three sides, should consider the Space Tower by Blum – a convenient and ergonomic way to store food in modern kitchens.

Convenient food storage with Blum’s Space Tower Well-thought-out cabinet solutions make optimal use of the storage space available and enhance everyday kitchen workflows, and Blum’s practical Space Tower larder unit is a good example – it has a door and inner pull-outs that can be planned and designed individually. The larder unit is available in every height, width and depth. Flexible inner dividing systems such as Ambia-Line or Orga-Line organise the interiors, offering clear visibility and securely holding items such as provisions and bottles. The Space Tower larder unit has full extensions that give clear visibility and direct access to contents – from all three sides and from above. Tall items, such as bottles, can be easily removed from above. Another advantage is that the user does not have to pull open the weight of the entire cabinet to remove one item, but only to open the pull-out needed.

Users opting for high, closed drawer sides can create up to 55% more storage space. In addition, each Space Tower inner pull-out has a load bearing capacity of up to 70kg. Thanks to integrated, soft-close Blumotion, the pull-outs will always close softly and effortlessly, and these can also be equipped with the Servo-Drive electric motion support system. To implement handle-less kitchens, the user can simply equip the doors with the Tip-On mechanical opening support system. All the fittings used for the Space Tower larder unit are either standard fittings from the Tandembox range (Blum’s tried-and-tested pull-out system), or standard fittings from the Legrabox range (Blum’s new box system with straight drawer sides). This ensures that the entire kitchen has a coherent design, yet provides plenty of scope for the design of cabinet interiors. Combined with the new Legrabox free design option, As far as assembly is inner pull-outs have a light and transparent look concerned, the cutting dimensions

of the base and back panel of both box systems stay the same. Fronts are simply clipped on. In addition, the user is free to choose the front they want. Blum’s Dynalog planning software makes it easy to determine the exact fixing positions of fittings. The software also helps the user order the right fittings components for the Space Towerlarder unit quickly and simply. 01908 285700 blum.com

Vauth-Sagel presented its new corner unit solution, Cornerstone Maxx, at interzum earlier this year. The company aims to effectively unlock the often wasted and untidy interiors of corner units in fitted kitchens. CEO Claus Sagel says: “We have understood what consumers would like to see in their homes, what kitchen fitters expect, and what retailers and the industry need. “And we took all of these realisations on board when we designed Cornerstone Maxx. With this totally innovative corner unit solution, we are setting new benchmarks in the market.” The innovative system brings the contents of two tray-like shelves to the front of the unit – Cornerstone Maxx does not obstruct the adjacent units as it swings open and comes to rest in front of its own unit. The movement sequence is supported by a PAM (power assisted movement) system. “Thanks to this lifting and a soft open/soft close mechanism, the interior slides in and out almost effortlessly, and noiselessly,” says Claus. The fixing system is almost invisible, yet achieves a load-bearing capacity of up to 25kg per shelf. The shelves themselves are of a modern linear design and, in contrast to competitors’ products, make do without unnecessary indentations – the storage space is therefore utilised to the maximum as they can be used to their full extent. The system is also convenient for the fitter – it consists of just three parts, and one mounting point. A single fixing pole ensures maximum stability, and makes the height easy to adjust even after it has been fitted. VauthSagel also achieves this with fewer screws and drilling. vs@vauth-sagel.com vauth-sagel.com

SOLID WOOD PROCESSING

www.furnitureproduction.net

In solid wood manufacturing today, flexibility is key. For anyone switching between jobs such as making ‘A’ energy-rated timber windows to creating workpieces with complex shapes, Weinig’s Multirex CNC uses the very latest technology to make easy work of the most challenging manufacturing processes, opening up new production potential.

Leading five-axis technology for solid wood processing from Weinig

Weinig’s long understanding of the changing needs of solid timber processing makes all the difference. The Multirex 7125 and Multirex 7225 offer almost unlimited possibilities in five-axis machining. Constructed for highly demanding work, the solid and well-thought-out construction

of both machines represents the latest in modern and application-friendly industrial design. The Multirex CNC features innovative and robust clamping technology, specifically developed to guarantee the precise machining of solid timber components. The robust

construction of the Multirex offers the stock removal performance expected for solid wood applications. The stability of the travelling column has been optimised using ‘finite element software’, which has resulted in a low dead weight, combined with high loading capability, extreme acceleration

values and exceptional dynamics. With the integration of intelligent software and sophisticated technology, CNC processing centres offer increasingly powerful manufacturing solutions, whose intuitive and user-friendly interfaces considerably shorten operator training. Open software architecture means that no ongoing licence fees are needed which might restrict future choice and company development. Promising the perfect processing centre for any business that needs flexibility combined with economy, the Multirex is unique in its price category. CNC processing means that traditional methods requiring significant skill and individual tolerances can be created today with ease. Just a few clicks of a mouse are needed to start the process and, with the utmost precision, bespoke

work such as mortised door frames or dovetail joints are created with production efficiency. Its unique capabilities enable customers to develop products for the market, rather than having to work within the limitations of a machine. Weinig’s solid wood processing solutions bring economy and craftsmanship back to CNC manufacturing – be it for batch size 1 or mass production. Four-sided planing has never been so easy In day-to-day work, manufacturers need machinery that is both robust and simple to operate. The Cube Plus delivers precisely this for easy planing up before CNC production. The Cube Plus is the latest version of Weinig’s easy-to-use, four-sided planing solution. With nearly 100 of the original Cubes sold in the UK,

53

the additional advantages of the Cube Plus make this simple processing machine a must-have for many workshops and production lines. Exceptionally simple setting is supported by automatic adjustments, and the MoulderPreView green and red lasers clearly show exactly how much will be planed off before the timber goes through. The Cube Plus creates straight, dimensionally-accurate, 90° right-angled workpieces in a single pass. New developments for the CubePlus include a larger 10in touchscreen, improved chip extraction, noise reduction, and the EasyLock knife change system enables the operator to change the knives without dismounting the cutterhead. 01235 557600 weinig.co.uk

Intorex, a specialist manufacturer of five-axis ‘between centres’ CNC machining centres, has enjoyed another successful year, and now has a total of seven high-spec TMC CNC machining centres working in the UK and Ireland, with a total of well over 150 sold worldwide …

Intorex five-axis CNC centres a UK hit According to Intorex, its machines are proving ideal for the production of finished sanded solid wood furniture and stair parts – even the most complex designs and shapes. Drawing on 40 years’ experience in the production of semi-automatic and CNC turning equipment, Intorex has manufactured a range of CNC machining centres that can be used for both the production of standard turned items, and the more complex contemporary design parts which have become popular in recent years. The current range consists of three models, which each suit varying production requirements. As standard, all machines are equipped with automatic hopper feed-loading systems, a milling head for shaping, and a flat belt-sanding unit for finish-sanding flat faces. The TC1000 model also has two router head units fitted, one working in the vertical and the other in the horizontal. This gives the machine the ability to produce a wide range of different components. The new TKC1500 model has the same milling/sanding heads, but is also fitted with an overhead router head with a six-position rotary tool changer and a sawblade for producing turned parts. With this specially-designed patented blade, it is possible to remove a large amount of stock in one pass, without sacrificing the quality and detail of the turning.

Optionally, to give further turning possibilities, a vee-type cutting gouge can be fitted, and also a narrow vertical sanding unit for the turned parts – the machine has two separate sanding heads. In total, the TKC is equipped with six CNCcontrolled axes, five of which are interpolated. Other features include a self-centring system for manually loading large section blanks, and a pneumatically-activated ‘cushion’ which prevents the machined part from being damaged when ejected onto the lateral exit conveyor belt.

The TMC can be supplied with a working length capacity of 1500 or 3000mm and has a total of nine CNC-controlled axes – five of which are interpolated. One big advantage offered by the additional controlled axes is the ability to mill and sand at the same time. Also, the TMC has a larger working capacity than the other two models, offering a maximum section size to be loaded of 300mm2 (150mm2 in automatic). Other features include a 10-position rotary tool

SOLID WOOD PROCESSING

www.furnitureproduction.net

changer and 22kW headstock motor. On request, the TMC can also be equipped with a fixed or removable flat bed table, to facilitate traditional four-axis CNC machining with the router head. The table can be specified in different sizes with various pneumatic or vacuum clamping systems. At the heart of the machines’ construction is the electro-welded mono block solid steel plate base structure, which has a wall thickness of 30mm. Only with this type of basement is it possible to achieve the highest quality machined components, even when working with pieces that can be up to 300mm2 x 3000mm long.

The rest of the design and build of the machines follows the same path, using heavy steel construction of the main column along with the automatic hopper feed loader. As standard, machines are supplied with Intorex’s 3D IntorEDIT design software, but on request can be supplied with the leading Solidworks/ Solidcam software package that includes kinematics and simulation, offering the ability to produce complex asymmetric parts. Alternatively, customers can choose their own software company to work with. While the machine construction itself is of

55

critical importance, there are some significant features that assist the actual operation and set-up. These include hydraulic operation of the tailstock, which is needed when producing items that may be quite thin, and only when using hydraulics is it possible to properly regulate the clamping pressure. If not, the piece will break. When working with long, thin or narrow parts such as stair spindles, there is also a need to have some form of steady to hold the blank while it is being machined, to help prevent any movement. As a result, Intorex designed a patented automatic adjustable pneumatic steady that works in conjunction with the CNC machine cycle so no manual intervention is needed. Other items of note are the eccentric tailstock device to enable off-centre machining, and the optional narrow sanding belt for turned parts, which incorporates a pneumatic jump action controlled through the CNC program, with two top and bottom knife-edge rollers, making it possible to precisely control what part or detail of the turning is sanded. Lastly, the main movements and adjustments of the hopper feed loader are all controlled by screw, with a Siko mechanical digital readout to aid quick and precise set-ups. Highlighting the progress the company has made, and its commitment to product development and aftersales support and service – for which it already has an excellent reputation worldwide – Intorex recently moved into a new purpose-built manufacturing, demonstration and training facility, which covers a total of 3500m2. Joinery the Smart way Traditional methods of producing solid wood components, whilst effective, are less flexible than CNC, and require more initial set up time. With the correct specification a Cosmec Smart 30 can provide the flexibility required for both batch one and continuous production of many traditional solid wood components such as stair parts, windows and interior/exterior doors and linings. In a basic format, normally used for panel processing, the Smart 30 comes as standard with a powerful 12Kw router spindle (ISO or HSK), 10 position rotary tool changer and a large format drill block consisting of 10 vertical spindles, six horizontal spindles and a 120mm sawblade. The most critical aspect of successful

“The most critical aspect of successful production is workpiece holding, particularly when considering stair and window components”

production is workpiece holding, particularly when considering stair and window components, dependent upon component dimensions and work to be carried out the component can be held by vacuum or pneumatic clamp, both of which are available. With the components firmly held the next consideration is the content of the work to be carried out. Most profiling work would be done using a standard vertical tool picked up from the tool changer, whilst there are many options available for horizontal routing or deep hole boring, such as: a fixed horizontal router motor – most commonly used in door production for mortice locks and hinges; a C axis and aggregates – used for more flexibility and access to all edges of a workpiece; and a five axis unit – the ultimate in flexibility, little or no restrictions. Add to the specification loading arms for heavy panels and an overhead laser system for component positioning and customers have a machine capable of producing within the fast paced, bespoke joinery sector. 024 7630 8100 ney.co.uk

SOLID WOOD PROCESSING

www.furnitureproduction.net

Having gained more than 20 years of experience in the solid wood industry with CNC machining centres and supporting equipment, Homag has announced its further expansion into this market sector with the launch of a range of industrial foursided planer/moulding machines.

Solid timber technology – a global first for Homag

The Homag LPP 307 planermoulder for solid wood processing

The introduction of this genuinely unique profiling solution represents a milestone in the company’s history, and enables Homag to offer a full range of solid wood processing machines to the joinery sector. Simon Brooks, Homag UK’s sales and marketing director, explains: “The launch of the new LPP 300 series emphasises Homag’s dedication to offer high-quality machinery for every stage of the solid wood processing chain. “The ever-increasing complex designs of window profiles, intricate machining details of door frames and the demand for smaller batch sizes are significant challenges manufacturers face. Remaining competitive is centred on the sheer quality of the finished product and the ability to produce it efficiently. That’s why it’s so important that the solid timber is planed to the highest possible standard, creating the perfect quality foundation ahead of the next stage of production. “The new LPP 300 series is a real game changer for small- to medium-sized manufacturers. Homag has taken what is

considered a very traditional piece of machinery and created a solution that combines stateof-the-art technology with solid mechanical engineering.” Offering a high level of flexibility, Homag’s new LPP 300 planer-moulders deliver not only variable feed speeds from 6-24m/min, but also variable spindle speeds. Each spindle can be individually programmed between 40008000rpm. This particular design feature is driven by the singular motors dedicated to each spindle, whereby operators can control each head to create optimal workpiece quality. The LPP 300 series for solid wood focuses highly on profile processing, offering various performance classes throughout the range’s models, which are equipped with five, six or even seven spindles. Each is equipped with tool management and Homag’s own proLock spindle clamp system, allowing for quick setups and efficient machine operation. In keeping with the Homag standard, the LPP 300 series is powerTouch operated – a unique feature in the moulder industry. Established

as the operating philosophy of Homag, this system unites design and function in a new generation of control systems. It is easy, ergonomic and user friendly – with just a few touches, the operator can efficiently load and select processing programs on the 21.5in widescreen interactive monitor. Simon concludes: “Homag launched two four-sided moulders from its new range at Ligna 2017 – the LPP 305 five-head machine which has a capacity of 230 x 130mm was demonstrated alongside the larger LPP 307F model with seven heads. These models attracted great interest from the crowds, and we have since received countless enquiries for the new Homag range. “The introduction of planer-moulders to the Homag range is a clear indication of the growth strategy for the company, and its continuous commitment to offer customers all solutions for wood processing from a single source – for both the joinery and panel sectors.” 01332 856424 homag.com

SOLID WOOD PROCESSING

www.furnitureproduction.net

For many years, all small workshops contained the classic machines – overhand planer, thicknesser, chisel mortiser, single end tenoner, vertical spindle moulder, and, in some cases, an overhead router and a stair trencher. These machines all relied heavily on the skills of dedicated wood machinists.

Masterwood – solid solutions Then the revolution started, and along came the through-feed planer/moulder, and suddenly the small workshops could do all their planning in a quarter of the time, leaving the skilled workforce to perform the more complicated jobs. Today, with a big decline in trained wood machinists and woodworkers in general, most companies find it very hard to recruit either skilled tradesman or youngsters to be trained. So often one hears of companies which have spent a number of years training staff, who then leave. Many companies now find that the answer to this lack of skilled workers is the CNC machining centre. For many years, Masterwood Spa has been recognised around the world as one of the leading suppliers of CNC machinery for the solid timber industry, starting with the Muti oscillating chisel mortisers, moving on to CNC drilling machines, and finally the all-round CNC machining centres. The panel industry was always the big area for companies producing CNC machines – it was simple drilling and routering. However, Masterwood followed the solid timber industry – a far more difficult route due to the materials used, type of work involved, and for many companies everything made is different. Masterwood soon developed dedicated machines like the Teknomat and Project Door that were ideal for door frame components plus solid core and composite doors, and this was closely followed by the DoorLine, a CNC machine that can cut all the hinges, with pilot holes, door lock, and handle holes, in less than 30 seconds. Coupled with handling equipment, this allowed small production lines for dedicated door set companies. In the late 90s, Masterwood commissioned its first staircase software package, a DOS-based programme which allowed small customers to

design and build a full winder stair in a couple of man hours. Over 20 years later, the software packages have developed through Masterwood’s own UKproduced MasterStair to the current Masterwood Stair package, developed in partnership with StairBiz. Today’s software allows nearly any design of stair to be developed in minutes. This includes stairs in more than one direction, open plan, cut string, curved strings, winders, and landings. Cutting sheets and drawings are produced along with rendered 3D views. Programmes are produced for every component, including strings, treads, newels and handrails. Once on the CNC, every operation – even the draw bore holes – is machined, and a couple of hours of machining results in a full stair kit that goes together, and with no real bench work to make it fit, as with traditional methods. Masterwood now has over 120 UK and Ireland customers using one of these stair packages, and there are even a few still using the original DOS-based package. With more and more stairs being demanded by the industry, new developments have been made that will allow stair components to be automated with CNC and handling equipment to allow

higher production with less labour costs. The biggest changes for the bespoke joinery industry is that as PCs have become more powerful, better software has been developed. This is an important area for the solid timber market, and to this extent, Masterwood has continued to develop software with its own company and preferred partners to allow the same sort of system developed for stairs to be applied to windows, timber frame doors, traditional box windows, furniture, roofs, conservatories, decorative panels and carvings. “As a fully-qualified wood machinist I know how time consuming it was to make one-off jobs in the workshop, especially stairs. With the continuous development of CNC machines and software it means that any workshop can still provide the complicated and impressive work that their clients demand,” says Masterwood GB director Dave Kennard. “Masterwood has many customers in the UK and Ireland producing one-off bespoke joinery, some of it is shown in the pictures here. Over the coming years we hope to see even more of this work as the machines and software become a vital part of any small workshop.” 01293 402700 masterwood.com

Expansion of the Makita 10.8V cordless range continues with the introduction of two CXT jigsaws. Boasting brushless motors and 90mm cutting capacity in wood, both models will challenge higher voltage cordless products within the current market.

Makita newest brushless jigsaws The new Makita JV102D features a barrel grip with raised front pommel which allows twohanded control of the machine, whilst the JV103D is a top handle model, most often used

for single-hand operation. Both new jigsaws will run up to 3000 strokes per minute, with a 23mm stroke length and toolless blade change for the B-type bayonet blades. Integral dust extraction is standard, while a host of features in these compact and lightweight jigsaws include: electric brake; variable speed dial; constant speed control; soft start and a soft no-load function; LED job light; and matching capacities of 90mm in timber, 20mm in aluminium and 10mm in mild steel. The bevel capacity is 0-45°, left or right. A side-mounted change lever enables

ProWood Finance – long-time supporters of Ney customers So why is ProWood better equipped to serve woodworking companies? 50% of all contracts with ProWood are never terminated as contracted. Customers have to exchange and update machinery in order to follow requirements of productivity, quality and product development. According to Ney, traditional finance houses would apply hefty penalties and complex procedures because they are unable to dispose of outdated equipment. In co-operation with Ney these machines find their market again. ProWood is able to accept new applicants more or less on the spot whilst traditional finance houses have to go in search of balance sheets – and this takes time. Unforeseen developments or new challenges need to be discussed with people who understand production problems and the market. Both Ney and ProWood employ people who possess this expertise and are available for consultations with Ney customers. Modern finance solutions In the past, banks liked to secure loans with a ‘fixed and floating charge’ over all the assets

of the company. This resulted in a deadly dependency on the good will of the Bank Manager. Many have experienced Banks which paradoxically withdraw the umbrella when it rains and then offer it back when the sun shines. The situation becomes worse when a director’s guarantee becomes a condition of any loan arrangement. This is dangerous and also morally unjustified in a world where the personal efficiency of a managing director is only one of the many factors deciding the fate of a company. Modern financing should be related to the subject to be financed. Long term bank loans should finance buildings, working capital should be financed through the collateral of outstanding debtors and capital goods should be financed by the prospective viability of the undertaking. The seller of asset finance should be able to discuss with the company the benefit of the proposed acquisition, ‘the payback time’ and offer technical and commercially based alternatives. Also one has to view future plans, expansion and foreseeable changes which could reflect back on the investment strategy in order to keep control of costs.

The clients of ProWood Finance Starter companies This is the best justification for the existence of our company. Without the chains and restrictions of government supported schemes we have set up many starter companies. Not every company succeeded however there are today a smaller number of millionaire companies which started from scratch with the help of ProWood Finance. We are looking primarily into the ability and determination of the owner his markets and planned products when deciding to approve finance. Obviously balance sheets or other historic records are non-existent in the case of starter companies. Our specialists will advise about the most prudent and bold ways to move ahead. Expanding companies The profile of our existing customers proves the point of our successful approach: • Our customers are mostly the younger generation • Our customers are showing above average profitability • The productivity per employee is the highest in the country • Our typical customer gives priority to quality, design and marketing • Our customers show low stock levels and still offer very flexible lead times Restructuring companies Most companies are managed by partnership between two people – the technical person and the sales person. Such partnerships also include married couples. If the business is successful, often enough the partnership breaks down and a split is unavoidable with financial consequences. In this case we are prepared to support the efforts to continue the company by refinancing equipment and machinery or whatever the individual case requires. It is very rewarding to work with our customers on positive ideas and to discuss the way forward. 024 7630 8100 ney.co.uk

Close Brothers Asset Finance has a long history financing SMEs in the furniture and joinery sector, funding a wide range of woodworking machinery. To find out more, Furniture & Joinery Production gave Ian Barker, Close Brothers Asset Finance’s Manufacturing MD, the opportunity to tell us about the critical role alternative funders play in ensuring SMEs have access to the funds they need to grow their business …

Growing business with alternative funding

Many small business owners are still unaware of the benefits that a wellstructured asset finance facility can bring to their business. The route to finance is still, for many, through traditional channels, when considering investing in new equipment. As mainstream sources move further away from the traditional overdraft facility, it is now more likely that any headroom in the overdraft facility will be used to pay overheads and suppliers rather than be tied up in capital equipment.

Asset finance – a fast growing finance option Access to finance is a common challenge for SMEs which can see the potential to grow their business but do not have enough working capital to pursue the opportunities. A key benefit of asset finance is that it offers an effective solution to this problem by spreading the cost of an asset over its useful working life. A well-structured hire purchase or leasing facility gives a business access to the machinery or equipment it needs without compromising cash flow. Repayments can be structured to take account of seasonal cash flow fluctuations and hire purchase charges, while leasing payments can be offset against pre-tax profits. Additionally, there are no restrictions in the choice of supplier, and asset finance can be used for both new and second hand assets. Refinance for fast release of funds Looking more closely at the various finance products, Sale and HP back is a quick way to release cash against existing assets. The funds released can be used to expand a business, settle outstanding bills or to fund a deposit on a new piece of equipment or even premises. A business has interrupted use of the asset,

Ian Barker

and repayments are matched with projected income stream. Sale and HP back can be used to release cash regardless of whether an asset is already owned or is on finance with a different lender. Acquiring a business using asset finance In today’s financial market, it may not always be straightforward to secure mainstream bank funding to acquire a new business. However, if the target company has a good fixed asset base consisting of vehicles, plant or machinery, it may be possible to re-finance the assets of the target company to fund the acquisition. 01244 457569 closeassetfinance.co.uk/woodworking

A Midlands manufacturing company that has invested in two wood waste heaters from Wood Waste Technology is saving time and money as a result of better managing its waste wood.

Wood waste heaters offer dramatic savings Launched in 1999, Rocket Scenery manufactures highquality, beautifully finished theatre scenery from its 2475m2 premises in Nottingham. Creating sets for theatres across the UK and the world means a significant amount of waste wood is generated, which varies in type, size, shape and ability to be easily disposed of. A recommendation to speak to Wood Waste Technology introduced Rocket Scenery to the numerous benefits of wood waste heaters. Whilst the team was impressed with the savings that could be made on waste removal and heating, it could also see how investing in a wood waste heater would really help the company’s growing waste management problem – especially the unproductive man hours spent dealing with wood waste. Helen Skelton, general manager of Rocket Scenery, explains: “Due to the diverse nature of our projects,

our wood waste varies tremendously depending on what we’re manufacturing. We also manufacture using fire-retardant wood, which adds a further complication when it comes to disposing of the waste. “Far too many man hours were being spent moving waste around and loading bins to get the waste off the premises as quickly as possible. We realised that investing in a wood waste heater could help organise waste management in our business, as well as providing other benefits including free heating for our manufacturing units and saving money on waste disposal costs.” Following a site survey and quotation the business purchased a WT15 from Wood Waste Technology, followed by the purchase of a second heater a few years later. Helen says: “We were very cautious at first and asked a lot of questions, but the staff at Wood Waste Technology were great and helped us evaluate the investment.

Purchasing a wood waste heater just made commercial sense, which is why a few years later we purchased a second one. “The heaters have helped us manage our waste better and are very easy to use. With increasing energy prices we never felt we were in control of our fuel bills, so generating free heating is a real bonus. We’re especially delighted that we’ve probably halved the amount of waste we’re now sending to landfill, saving us money on our waste disposal bills. We’d definitely recommend Wood Waste Technology to other businesses who generate a lot of wood waste.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters and boilers, from small hand-fired units to larger fully-automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies

genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 01785 250400 woodwastetechnology.com grossuk.co.uk putzmaus.co.uk

Advanced application with Hesse’s one-coat colour system Last year, Hesse Lignal raised the standard once again with the launch of its FantasticColor system. From its state-of-the-art laboratories in Germany, Hesse developed a product that in just a single step uses up to 60% more material applied to vertical surfaces in comparison to other similar coloured lacquer systems. Hesse Fantastic-Color is a pigmented, light-fast and well-balanced two-component PU acrylic resin lacquer with impressive opacity and a fast drying time. Its increased opacity achieves greater coverage than competitors, and a rapid intermediate drying time of two hours is a big step forward in the marketplace. The product’s particular distinguishing features are its outstanding ability to stay on vertical surfaces together with impressive levelling on horizontal surfaces. The lacquer can be applied directly to MDF edges without using special primers and fillers. The desired result is therefore achieved much faster, saving both time and effort. What this means for finishing is significantly reduced

processing times, allowing for greater production but without compromising on quality. Hesse strives to be at the forefront of wood coatings, and once more it has surpassed standards for heat-, chemical- and scratch-resistance with Fantastic-Color. The company’s lacquers are independently tested and certified, resulting in a system which meets the IMO standard for coatings applicable to seagoing vessels as well as Class B1 fire certification. In respect of the wellbeing of the sprayers as well as end users, Hesse’s Fantastic-Color formulation is free of wood preservatives, toxic heavy metals, phthalate plasticisers, formaldehyde, CMRs category 1A and 1B and volatile aromatic and halogenated organic compounds. The result is a first-class coloured lacquer

finish with an impressive feel. Its surface invites the touch, and the senses are simultaneously stimulated with colour and smoothness. Following the successful launch of FantasticColor in Europe, Hesse Lignal has utilised its partnership with Redwood Innovations to distribute the product in the UK. The uniquely close relationship between Hesse and Redwood ensures that customers buying this system have the benefit of strong technical back-up. The highly-trained staff at Redwood can answer queries on applications over the phone and on site if required. To find out more about FantasticColor, and to take advantage of Hesse Lignal’s latest technological advancement, contact Redwood Innovations, which is open Monday to Friday from 7.30am-4.30pm. 02392 233310 redwoodinnovations.co.uk

Combilift unveils new electric multi-directional counterbalance 4000kg capacity forklift truck Combilift has unveiled a new all-wheel drive, electric, multi-directional counterbalance forklift truck, with a lift capacity of 4000 kg. The Combi-CBE 4t forklift was launched by Managing Director Martin McVicar at the recent GIS show at the Piacenza Expo centre in Italy.

Combilift’s new Combi-CBE 4t

The innovative Combi-CBE 4t is based on the original and very successful Combi-CB which Combilift launched in 2008, and until now the electric models in the range have been available with a maximum lift capacity of 3000kg. The all-wheel drive Combi-CBE 4t, coupled with large rubber tyres, allows the truck to work effortlessly indoors and out and on all types of terrains. Its versatility enables it to offload from HGVs, bring product directly to racking or free stacking areas, as well as to feed production lines. Combined with load sensing steering and no fumes, this makes it ideal for indoor warehouse operations. Driver convenience and comfort was a priority during the design phase. Side shift comes as standard and an integrated hydraulic fork positioner is an option to facilitate the handling of various sized loads, without operators having to leave the cab to manually adjust the forks. Quick service and maintenance procedures with easy access to the tried and tested components avoid any inconvenience for the end user. Speaking at the launch, Martin McVicar revealed that the new model was developed in response to a specific customer request for heavier lift capacities on electric forklift trucks. “As a

customer focused company, Combilift strives to provide our dealers and customers with machines that not only do the job but also save them money. This forklift is particularly interesting for the Italian market where 93% of forklifts are electric. The initial enquiry came to us in 2015 and this week we are delighted to launch the Combi-CBE 4t in Italy. The launch of this forklift also underlines the continued expansion of our product range.” After the exhibition, Combilift’s Italian dealer Euro Assistance will deliver the Combi-CBE to the customer, Mirrione Legnami, a leading timber supplier in Sicily and a new customer for Combilift. combilift.com
