As I write, the Christmas period is nearly upon us, offering –we hope – a well-deserved moment of pause and rest for our hardworking colleagues and readers after a busy year.

It is undoubtedly a challenging climate that we find ourselves in as we enter 2025, economically, politically and socially. Still, there is much to be celebrated in the way that the industry continues to rise to the occasion.

Within this issue, we have incorporated a sizeable feature focused on the opportunities, trends and challenges the furniture manufacturing industry may face in 2025 and beyond.

From Lectra’s take on ‘the six trends that will shape the furniture industry in 2025’, to projections from the likes of Daltons Wadkin, SCM, Mirka and TDUK, we hope this makes for an insightful and interesting read.

With Ligna and interzum just around the corner, 2025 will be an important year from an events perspective, too. Both provide a crucial opportunity for the international community to come together, and to celebrate the industry’s innovation and ingenuity. We will, of course, be featuring plentiful coverage within the magazine ahead of these events, and we look forward to seeing many of you there.

Elsewhere this issue, we’ve started the year with a true success story, as we explore the meteoric rise of Combilift within the global market. You’ll also find the story of a fascinating timber structure created for The Office Group in Shoreditch, as well as a report on how Striebig vertical panel saws have played a key role in supporting a leading UK-based modular housing manufacturer.

Last but not least, we explore the latest innovations in the Sanding Technology, CNC Machinery and Panel-based Production sectors. We hope you enjoy the issue, and we look forward to working alongside you in 2025.

Q3 sees volumes rise for softwood, OSB and EWP

Timber import volumes for Q3 of 2024 were encouragingly ahead of Q3 2023 for softwood, OSB and engineered wood products, but these increases were counterbalanced by falls elsewhere in the market.

While softwood imports in Q3 2024 were 1% higher compared to Q3 2023, and OSB and Engineered Wood Products (EWP) also recorded growth, there was still an overall deficit of 1.2%, due to volume reductions of other main products, like hardwood plywood and MDF.

Average prices of timber and panel products edged upwards in the nine months to September 2024, confirming the end of a sustained period of price volatility between 2000-2023.

During the first nine months of 2024, solid wood imports were 1.7% lower than over the same period of 2023, while imports of panel products were 5.2% lower.

“It’s encouraging to see prices continuing to stabilise, albeit at a low level, and the overall import deficit shrink to just 1.2%,” says TDUK Head of Technical and Trade, Nick Boulton.

“Going forward there are likely even more significant challenges ahead for timber businesses, with softwood log availability and very low stocks being most pressing on the agenda.

Screwfix gives a voice to the trade in Government

Following the release of its Voice of the Trade report earlier this year, which surveyed over 1,000 of the nation’s hardworking tradespeople, Screwfix, in partnership with its parent company Kingfisher, invited several finalists and winners from its Top Tradesperson and Trade Apprentice competitions to share their insights with MPs, civil servants, and Lords at the Houses of Parliament.

Speaking at the

parliamentary event were Mohammed Rahman, Screwfix Top Tradesperson 2024, and Astrid Arnold who won the title in 2023. With recent from Screwfix’s report highlighting 79% of SMEs and sole traders have been unable to take on an apprentice, both Mohammed and Astrid used their speeches to call for clearer support from those charged with policy to aid not only those thinking of entering the trades, but also to help the small, often sole

traders, who might be unable to take on an apprentice.

“When we carried out our research for the Voice of The Trade report, it was striking to see that 79% of SMEs and sole traders have been unable to take on an apprentice. As the industry continues to face the skills gap, it’s clear that much support is needed here to ensure we have the very best talent entering the trades,” said Screwfix CEO, John Mewett. www.screwfix.com

Acimall presents latest findings for Italian market

Acimall, the Italian Woodworking Technology Association, has released its report on Italian woodfurniture technology during the third quarter of 2024.

Despite the difficult “deployment” of the procedures, and waiting for the simplification measures, the incentives for “Industry 5.0” initiatives are also starting to generate some effects in the industry of machinery and technology

for wood and wood-based materials, especially for large plants, reports the Studies Office of Acimall –the Confindustria member association representing Italian manufacturers.

A short in the arm for the Italian market, after more than two years of dropping orders, it’s a trend reversal that will hopefully be repeated in exports, taking the total value of orders back to positive.

The association’s quarterly

survey depicts another quarter of shrinking business, with orders decreasing by another 9.4 percent compared to the same period of 2023.

Positive news comes from domestic demand, up by 16.1 percent compared to the third quarter of the current year. There’s a further reduction in international orders, losing another 12.4 percent.

Looking ahead to 2025 ...

In the following pages, we look at some of the key ‘trends’, challenges and opportunities facing the industry in 2025 and beyond.

Alongside trend reports centred on specific sectors, we’ve consulted a range of individuals and brands on the most pressing issues and themes that will influence the operation and direction of their businesses in the coming year.

What emerges is a challenging landscape, with rising costs, supply chain disruptions and a skills shortage – amongst other factors – applying considerable pressure. These demanding conditions will necessitate a careful balance of maintaining profitability with an eye on corporate social responsibility.

Within this difficult climate, boosting productivity and efficiency, while reducing waste, will be king. In the following pages, we’ll explore how agile production methods and the continued growth of smart manufacturing can help to achieve these goals.

Of course, no trends article could overlook the ever-present focus on sustainability. From the sourcing and handling of materials, to fine-tuning production processes and waste reduction measures, this overriding issue will continue to shape and inspire the output of the industry for the foreseeable future.

“Sustainability will dominate the industry, with a focus on ecofriendly materials, carbon-neutral production processes, and waste reduction”

Alex Dalton, MD, Daltons Wadkin

Trend/theme of the year:

Sustainability and Circular Economy Practices. Sustainability will dominate the industry as manufacturers and consumers alike focus on eco-friendly materials, carbon-neutral production processes, and waste reduction.

Other themes will include the increased adoption of modular and repairable furniture designs to align with circular economy principles, as well as Smart manufacturing using AI and IoT to enhance efficiency and reduce waste.

Challenge of the year: Navigating supply chain disruptions. Continued unpredictability in the global supply chain – particularly in sourcing timber and other raw materials – due to environmental regulations, geopolitical tensions, and climate change will continue to pose a challenge.

Secondly, managing rising costs of energy and raw materials while maintaining profitability in a price-sensitive market.

Lastly, addressing skills shortages, especially in skilled joinery and advanced machinery operation.

Opportunity of the year: Growth in customised and bespoke solutions. Increasing consumer demand for personalised, bespoke furniture and joinery solutions will create opportunities for companies offering flexible, small-batch production services.

Advanced CNC technology and 3D printing will enable rapid prototyping and customisation, helping businesses cater to this trend efficiently.

Expanding markets in emerging economies where the middle class is growing and looking for high-quality, tailored furniture.

www.daltonswadkin.com

“The challenge remains a general uncertainty on the European markets vs an upcoming clear expansionistic policy in the US”

Gabriele De Col, MD, SCM Group UK

Trend/theme of the year: The hope is that the new build policy announced by the government will soon be reflected with a boost to the whole construction sector, revitalising with an upward trend in our industry. Other relevant themes will be the sustainability of materials and processes used to build furniture and joinery products, benefitting from reduced energy consumption offered by systems like scm SaveEnergy, and modular design in construction, hence requiring larger and more automated equipment like scm Oikos, Oikos X and Area CNC machining centres for beams and walls.

Challenge of the year: The challenge remains a general uncertainty on the European markets vs an upcoming clear expansionistic policy in the US. This means that private expenditure might remain conservative if we sit where we are. On top of the financial elements just mentioned, disruptions in the supply chain due to international instability and labour shortages are the everyday battles our customers need to fight even before looking at broader spectrum challenges like sustainability and inclusion of technological advances like AI in fairly traditional work environments.

Opportunity of the year: Automation and digital systems to improve productivity, amid the lack of skilled personnel, increasing costs and need of hybrid working. Automation and robotics like the scm Flexstore automatic storage or Windorflex door and windows manufacturing cell are increasingly being used to improve efficiency and precision in the manufacturing process, while digital tools like Maestro suite software, Maestro Connect’s services and Win Mes, aimed at exploiting the work floor at its best, are revolutionising the level of control and performance achievable by all manufacturing entities, from very small to very large, thanks to the scalability of the tools. www.scmgroup.com

“We think that legal and sustainably sourced Hardwood timbers will play a significant role in 2025’s design trends”

Nick Boulton Head of Technical and Trade Policy, TDUK

Trend/theme of the year: Many interior design organisations are predicting that natural and earth tones will dominate in 2025. This creates a fantastic opportunity for timber, which is, of course, a natural material that sits perfectly alongside these neutral tones, as well as the continuing preference for biophilic designs that ‘bring the outside in’. In particular, we think that legal and sustainably sourced Hardwood timbers will play a significant role in 2025’s design trends, thanks to the amazing depth and range of colours and textures they can provide.

Challenge of the year: Dare we say just choosing two or even three of the many possible Hardwood species that you could use as inspiration for your next project?

Whether you’re familiar with Oak, Maple, Walnut, Cherry, Beech or Ash, why not try using a species that you’ve never tried before – there are plenty to choose from, and they offer all the strength, durability and quality that you need for your furniture and joinery projects.

Opportunity of the year: If you’re looking for a way to grow your business and find like-minded contacts to collaborate with, consider Building a relationship with specialist Hardwood suppliers who are Timber Development UK members. They can give the best advice on which timbers are the best for your project, as well as supplying sustainably sourced Hardwoods in an amazing range of colours and textures.

Working with a TDUK supplier means you’re choosing a company that is compliant with all the relevant regulations, and who has agreed to abide by TDUK’s Code of Conduct, so you can rely on the advice and support they provide. www.timberdevelopment.uk

“This year represents a great opportunity for the wood furniture industry to take the lead as consumers move away from plastic and ‘throw-away’ items’”

Neil Newbrook Business Sector Manager for Wood, Mirka

Trend/theme of the year: I believe the trend will be towards furniture with a strong sense of harmony with the natural world and sustainable sourcing. Consumers want to know that they are purchasing items with a low environmental impact, so they will be looking for long-life products, with local sourcing from companies that can clearly show their measures to reduce waste and create circularity.

Challenge of the year: Cost of living remains a concern for people, and large luxury purchases take careful consideration. As such, we expect there to still be a strong market for low-cost furniture. However, this will become more challenging to produce while companies also strive to make investments in new, responsible manufacturing techniques. It is clear that the market will need to consciously accept these higher costs in order to create a pipeline of genuinely sustainable furniture products, and not just a series of nice-sounding promises with no substance behind them.

Opportunity of the year: This year represents a great opportunity for the wood furniture industry to take the lead as consumers move away from plastic and “throw-away” items while looking to UK manufacturers to set the tone for what a truly sustainable home will look like. We are already seeing more popularity in recycled solid surface materials, recycled boards and long-life wood products. Any company that can’t demonstrate their actions to address sustainability will likely be left behind as industry regulations tighten up to ensure the UK continues to make positive contributions towards global targets. www.mirka.com

“Choosing suppliers with a strong inventory and logistics network will be key for manufacturers to respond quickly and efficiently”

Richard Curtis, MD, Häfele

Trend/theme of the year: ‘Working smarter’ will be a theme for 2025 and one that will manifest itself in many ways. Across the home, we expect the demand for connected homes and technologies to continue to rise as more and more consumers understand IOT’s (the Internet of Things) opportunities (and risks).

For furniture and joinery manufacturing, this will see greater integration of smart lighting, such as Hafele’s Loox Lighting range and appliances into designs. But working smarter also means working more efficiently.

“As more manufacturers recognise the benefits of premium hardware solutions, suppliers will need to balance increased demand with consistent quality and service levels”

With a shortage of skills in the industry, we’re expecting more manufacturers to make use of design services and customisation support, to streamline their operations and increase their efficiency.

Challenge/opportunity of the year: Bouncing back from challenging economic circumstances will be both a challenge and an opportunity in 2025. The past 12 months have seen a downturn in work for many manufacturers, and businesses have had to cut their cloth accordingly. However, the tide will turn in 2025, so manufacturers must be ready for when the opportunity strikes. Choosing suppliers with a strong inventory and logistics network will be key for manufacturers to respond quickly and efficiently.

www.hafele.co.uk

Phil Beddoe, General Manager, Titus

Trend/theme of the year: The furniture industry will see a significant shift towards value-driven solutions as consumers face continued economic pressures. With household budgets remaining tight and manufacturers grappling with inflationary pressures and reduced volumes, there will be an increased focus on suppliers who can deliver added value across the entire product lifecycle – from production and installation through to the end product. Manufacturers will prioritise partnerships with suppliers who can enhance their overall competitiveness while ensuring products remain fit for purpose.

Challenge of the year: The key challenge will be maintaining sustainable growth in an increasingly competitive market. As more manufacturers recognise the benefits of premium hardware solutions, suppliers will need to balance increased demand with consistent quality and service levels. This will require careful management of supply chains, production capacity, and customer relationships while maintaining the high standards that the industry has come to expect.

Opportunity of the year:

Innovation in hardware technology presents significant opportunities for manufacturers to differentiate their products. The six trends that will shape the furniture industry in 2025

Amid rapid transformation, the furniture industry is reinventing its models to meet the challenges of personalisation, sustainability and competitiveness in a tense economic and geopolitical context. Here, Lectra presents its take on the six major trends shaping the future of this vital sector ...

1. A market held back by economic constraints

While the pandemic initially boosted the furniture market, inflation and persistently high – though declining – interest rates are now dampening sales. Additionally, limited access to homeownership continues to suppress demand. By 2025, technology and innovation will play pivotal roles in overcoming these challenges. The adoption of cost-effective production methods and the development of modular, affordable solutions are expected to revitalise sales and drive growth.

2. Agile production: the era of ondemand production

Mass production is increasingly giving way to more agile methods, tailored to meet consumer demands for personalisation while addressing economic constraints. By 2025, the adoption of automation and on-demand manufacturing technologies is expected to rise significantly. These models, designed to reduce inventory and adapt to the specific requirements of each order, offer a proactive response to market fluctuations. Manufacturers are focusing on reactive production processes that

minimise lead times while delivering a customised customer experience.

3. Flexible, resilient supply chains

Geopolitical tensions, growing protectionism and rising logistics costs are reshaping traditional supply chains. Companies are increasingly opting for strategic relocation based on geopolitical alliances (friend-shoring) and/or geographical proximity (nearshoring). The goals are clear: bypass trade barriers, shorten lead times, and control transportation costs.

Simultaneously, automated factories are

“Mass production is increasingly giving way to more agile methods, tailored to meet consumer demands for personalisation while addressing economic constraints”

enhancing the ability to respond swiftly to sudden demand fluctuations. This trend aligns with the growing importance of sustainability and proximity in supply chain management.

4. A changing geography of production

While China remains a dominant player, new production hubs are emerging in Vietnam, Indonesia, and India. These regions are capitalising on competitive costs, local demand growth, and trade barriers targeting China. India, in particular, benefits from a burgeoning middle class that is driving demand and attracting investment. By 2025, the global furniture production landscape will become more diversified as manufacturers seek to spread their risks and seize opportunities in these growing markets.

5. Sustainability as a competitive lever

By 2025, the pressure of environmental regulations will force the industry to intensify its efforts toward environmentally-friendly production.

In Europe, the EU Regulation against Deforestation and Forest Degradation (EUDR), adopted in June 2023, will have an impact on producers, who must ensure that the materials they use do not come from deforested land after December 31, 2020.

“Companies are increasingly opting for strategic relocation based on geopolitical alliances (friend-shoring) and/or geographical proximity (near-shoring)”

6. Digital revolutionises the customer experience

As for the United States, the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFPLA) prohibits imports of Chinese products manufactured using with forced Uyghur labor. To comply with these stringent environmental and social standards, brands will need to increase their reliance on sustainable materials and ensure traceability through green certifications and comprehensive data collection across the production chain. Beyond regulatory compliance, adopting these measures will also help brands resonate with a growing base of environmentally conscious consumers.

Companies that successfully integrate environmental values into their marketing strategies will position themselves as leaders in a more sustainable and socially responsible market.

BOXOUT

As a major player in the furniture, fashion, and automotive markets, Lectra offers industrial intelligence solutions that facilitate the digital transformation of the companies it serves. With its software, cutting equipment, data analysis solutions and associated services, Lectra helps its customers push boundaries and unlock their potential. The Group is proud to state that its 3,000 employees are driven by three core values: being open-minded thinkers, trusted partners and passionate innovators.

Personalisation and technology are redefining the furniture buying experience. Consumers now expect to co-create their furniture, visualise designs through augmented reality and explore virtual showrooms from the comfort of their living rooms. These innovations strengthen customer engagement while simplifying purchasing decisions. By 2025, the distinction between physical and digital furniture will be increasingly blurred.

Conclusion

Sustainability is no longer just an environmental initiative; it is now a core component of a brand’s economic model and decision-making process. The intersection of economy and ecology, or what we call “Econogy”, is driving businesses to merge corporate social responsibility (CSR) with profitability. Brands no longer need to choose between sustainability and economic growth – both can coexist and fuel each other. This approach enables the furniture industry to respond to a real paradox.

Consumers increasingly demand more responsible, higher-quality, and customisable furniture, yet they also seek lower-priced options to match their shrinking purchasing power. As a result, brands must rise to the challenge of offering better-quality furniture at more affordable prices.

The industry is entering a new era where flexibility, durability, and innovation will be the key drivers. Those who can anticipate and adapt to these changes will be best positioned to thrive in a market undergoing radical transformation. www.lectra.com

What does 2025 hold for the UK’s kitchen, living and bedroom spaces?

Daval Furniture, award-winning British designer and manufacturer of quality fitted furniture gives insight into the latest furniture trends impacting the UK’s kitchen, living and bedroom spaces in 2025 ...

“Our research spans everything from young families and professional couples to multi-generational households, and early indications for next year show that space optimisation will be fundamental to the design conversation in 2025,” explains Simon Bodsworth, Managing Director at Daval.

“As trends continue to focus on decluttering the home, UK homeowners are seeking storage solutions that assist with the day to day running of daily life across all floors, and this is creating a deeper appreciation for fitted furniture given its versatile nature, comprehensive range of styles and excellent space making qualities.

“In 2025, made-to-measure, madeto-order furniture will become the market leader, able to create lifestyle friendly interiors which are on trend and

ergonomically designed.”

The best-dressed interiors in 2025 will embrace the following key trends:

Lifestyle Kitchens

The latest kitchen interiors are primed to enhance workflow in 2025, serving as a natural extension to both home and lifestyle with top-level furniture being used across the entire ground floor space. Designed to help any style and size of household running smoothly, practical fitted furniture is lending itself to the creation of ergonomic kitchen layouts, which are supported by adjoining functional areas like a walk-in pantry, hidden utility room or dedicated laundry away from the main kitchen living space. From full height doors, complementary skirting plinths, and island pilasters for grounding the island unit, through to the

latest built-in appliances at eye level to make cooking and laundry a breeze, the very best kitchens will optimise storage space and maximise liveability.

Style and finish will also tune into the latest lifestyle trends next year, with a preference for both classic and contemporary furniture collections, which bring order, warmth and the feelings of tranquillity. Versatile in-frame Shaker designs will continue to bring a contemporary edge to the classic kitchen space whereas handleless doors and drawers will cater to modern décors, where the fusion of organic elements such as stone and timber will provide a rich, layered effect.

Deep blues, leafy greens and soothing greys will remain a popular choice, with darker shades lending a contemporary edge for those craving gentle contrasts.

Social Living

No longer contained by four walls, the 2025 kitchen living space will focus on the social aspects of design, with open plan schemes incorporating everything from dedicated coffee stations, breakfast cupboards and wine cabinets through to casual dining, media walls, integrated home bars, and even rec areas. In fact, social living will be a key part of kitchen design next year with planned-in functionality enhancing food prep, home entertaining and everyday life for the long term.

Wellness Bedrooms

The master suite will undergo a makeover next year, as blended living becomes top priority and welcomes hybrid dressing rooms, walk-in wardrobes and en-suite bathrooms being introduced into the sleep zone. Premium storage solutions will include floating dressing tables and floor-to-ceiling wardrobes combined with a variety of mood lighting and reflective surfaces for a truly connected environment.

“Early indications for next year show that space optimisation will be fundamental to the design conversation in 2025”

Custom furniture will be pivotal to the overall look and feel of the wellness bedroom with built-in wardrobes top priority! Extremely flexible, look out for designs with clothing rails, drawers, lighting, shelving for shoes, or multi-stack drawer arrangements to ensure the ultimate in boutique style dressing at home.

Raw Materials

The home-centred lifestyle will continue to influence the UK home, as consumers will adopt a more emotional approach to design so, customisation will become the norm in terms of furniture style, finish and complementary hardware and accessories. In fact, key research from Statista indicates that furniture will be an important consideration next year, as the optimisation of interiors will encourage sustainably made, durable solutions with ethically sourced solid wood furniture, hand painted cabinetry, and UV lacquered custom doors and drawers coming out on top.

Future-proof design to lead the way in 2025

LEICHT Contracts, one of the UK’s leading providers of German-engineered kitchen furniture to the new build and regeneration construction market, reports on the latest interior trends shaping the UK home next year ...

“The contracts market continues to be governed by a need for future-proof design, which supports UK building regulations and other factors such as demographics, cultural trends, lifestyle preferences, and community dynamics,” says Sarah Edwards, Managing Director UK at LEICHT Contracts.

“Luxury property trends in 2025 are therefore looking at next-level design, where both style and function of the furniture are now viewed as one.

Contributing to the creation of nurturing home environments for the UK’s prime residential sector, next year will inspire a host of contemporary environments which focus on quality materials and a rich interplay between colour, texture and construction.”

Keeping both the home and buyer in mind, LEICHT Contracts identifies the following interior design trends as ‘ones to watch’ in 2025:

Multi-sensory furniture

Ergonomic furniture design will point towards quality materials next year, which help to engage all the senses and positively influence the home environment, such as the look and feel, ambience, and functionality.

Material choice is therefore paramount when creating a sensory interior scheme, with both dark and light wood furniture bringing the calming effects of mother nature in 2025, along with accents in glass that reflect natural light around the home.

Low contrast design

Interior spaces will promote seamless living next year, and provide a new take on the neutral colour palette, with warm whites, greys, and soft shades of beige coming through as signature colours. From pale sand and delicate fawn to creamy vanilla and taupe, muted light shades will be the go-to when combined with solid wood or veneer cabinets that showcase distinct patterns and textures. The desire for greater personal expression will also see a range of bold colour options next year, including primary hues like blue and red or more earthy

“2025 will inspire a host of contemporary environments which focus on quality materials and a rich interplay between colour, texture and construction”

shades of green and yellow, which are considered the most visible colours in nature. In terms of material, then, the most beautiful natural resources such as fine marble, European walnut and light oak will shape schemes where dark, low contrast cabinets add sophistication and tactility in design.

Geometric forms

Whether square or rectangular, furniture in 2025 will welcome a series of fixed structures in the kitchen living space that provide a flawless aesthetic with clean,

straight lines. From ceiling-mounted solutions for added light and storage in the cook zone through to full-height cabinets that bring a sense of stability, furniture next year will adopt a minimalist style and mirror the market’s growing desire for simple forms and negative space.

Hardware will also adopt a geometrical style with one-dimensional handles in distinct finishes being used to elevate the drawers and cabinet doors to full effect. enquiries@leichtcontracts.com www.leichtcontracts.com

Combilift’s journey into the Global Market

Combilift, the material handling solutions provider, has set the benchmark for the mass production of customised, innovative products. Here, Combilift’s CEO, Martin McVicar, delves into the company’s meteoric journey into the Global Market ...

“In 1998, Robert Moffett and I cofounded the business with a unique forklift concept,” he says. “We designed a truck that could move forwards and backwards like any regular forklift but, at the flick of a switch, could also travel sideways. Our first model, the multidirectional four-tonne C-Series, is still in production 26 years later.

“We started in March 1998, and by July, we had completed three units for customers in Norway. I told my girlfriend, now my wife, that we were taking a week’s holiday to Norway. In reality, we were there so I could oversee the delivery of those first trucks. By the end of that year, we had produced 18 Combilifts, 17 of which were exported.

“From day one, exports were our primary focus, and as of today, they account for 97-98% of our business.”

“From day one, exports were our primary focus, and as of today, they account for 97-98% of our business”

Transporting large goods

“When you’re focused on exporting, minimising transportation costs becomes a priority,” Martin explains. “Shipping efficiently is key, so from the start, we designed compact, multi-directional trucks that fit into containers, reducing freight costs. Our larger products, like straddle carriers, which can reach up to 14 metres tall, are designed like a Lego Meccano set, so after testing, they can be disassembled and shipped within containers.

“For oversized equipment, we use rollon, roll-off shipping, where the vehicle is loaded in our yard and driven directly onto the ship and then off again at its destination. So far, we’ve never had a vehicle we couldn’t ship.”

Navigating export rules and regulations

When starting a business, ignorance of export rules can actually be a blessing – knowing too much might have discouraged us from pursuing the global market. The regulations we faced were diverse and complex, depending on the

market, but strong customer relationships, and a bit of hand-holding, helped us navigate these challenges. Our customers often guided us through their country’s specific requirements.

“Back in 1998, we were a team of 13 engineers and fabricators. Today, we have 850 employees, including an expert team dedicated to handling exports, so thankfully I no longer need to worry about the finer details. Our logistics team of over 30 people ensures that, from pre-delivery inspections through final testing and shipping, everything runs smoothly.”

Global support network

Like any moving vehicle, forklifts need servicing to keep running efficiently. For Combilift, our route to market is through a global dealer network with skilled service engineers. We provide comprehensive in-house training and also offer service training in local markets. Having professional local service on the customer’s doorstep is crucial, along with rapid access to parts, and, today, Combilift has more than 300 dealer distributors around the world.

>> What winning Exporter of the Year means

Over the years, we’ve been fortunate to receive various awards, but being named Irish Exporter of the Year is a significant achievement. Competing with industries across the island, including large global manufacturers in sectors like pharmaceuticals and medical devices, was no easy task. This award wasn’t just about submitting an application; it also involved two rigorous interviews in front of a panel of 14-15 independent judges from diverse industries. Winning this award shows that we’ve been recognised as a fully-fledged manufacturing company that truly exports globally. We don’t simply rebadge products — we design, fabricate, paint, and assemble our vehicles from start to finish before exporting them worldwide.

“For Combilift, this recognition feels like winning an Olympic gold medal. It’s a stamp of approval that we’re doing, and continue to do, things right.”

“Today, we are in a strong market position as a debt-free, privately owned company with over €500m in revenue”

Looking ahead

Like many entrepreneurs, Robert and I came from humble beginnings, growing up on a farm where hard work was essential. I was never handed anything, and that work ethic has stayed with me. Today, we are in a strong market position as a debt-free, privately owned company with over €500m in revenue. The only downturn we’ve experienced in the last

26 years was during the financial crisis of 2008/09; every other year has seen continued growth.

Innovation has been key to our success. Our team continues to design new, exciting products, which keeps us ahead of the market. That’s what really drives me – knowing that Combilift’s innovation keeps us moving forward.

“Treated like kings”: Fabtops’ experience with HOMAG and the CENTATEQ N-210

Based in Northern Ireland, Fabtops Solid Surfaces is a specialist fabricator offering high-quality solid surface solutions for residential, commercial, and healthcare projects. The company, while purposefully small in number, combines over three decades of shopfitting expertise with a passion for craftsmanship. Their bespoke services, from DuPont Corian® to LG Hi-Macs and more, have earned them a loyal, high-end customer base.

Despite their strong reputation, Fabtops recently faced challenges with their ageing equipment, leading to inefficiencies and limitations in production capabilities. To overcome these issues, they turned to HOMAG for a state-of-theart solution.

Out with the old Fabtops’ older machinery was becoming a bottleneck in their production. Managing Director Patrick Hannaway explains, “The clamping system was outdated, leading to movement and sizing errors. It was inefficient, a nightmare to operate, and we were afraid to push it too hard for fear of breaking something. It felt like we were stuck.”

Recognising the need for a modern solution to maintain their high standards while improving efficiency, Fabtops began searching for a machine that could meet their current and future needs.

Choosing HOMAG

After hearing positive feedback from similar businesses using HOMAG equipment, Fabtops initiated their search. Their first point of contact was Paul from HOMAG, whose hands-on approach made a lasting impression.

“Paul was fantastic,” recalls Patrick. “He cut out samples and sent them to us, and we couldn’t believe the quality. He took the time to understand our business and recommended exactly what we needed – and what we didn’t. Without Paul, we might have overspent. HOMAG genuinely wants what’s best for you.”

After evaluating their options, Fabtops chose the CENTATEQ N-210, a CNC gantry-processing centre designed to handle high-precision tasks with ease.

Seamless installation and training

The installation process was smooth

and efficient. “It couldn’t have been better,” says Patrick. “We were given clear timelines months in advance, and the machine arrived exactly on schedule.”

On-site training was equally impressive: “Aaron led the integration, and my team loved the training. They couldn’t wait to get started with the machine. We were treated like kings at their training centre – the catering was especially fantastic! HOMAG’s professionalism is unmatched.”

Immediate benefits

Since installing the CENTATEQ N-210, Fabtops has seen transformative improvements in their operations. The increased speed of production has been a standout benefit, as Patrick explains: “The speed is incredible. We only need to run the machine 3-4 hours a day, and it’s doing far more than we ever managed before.”

In addition to faster production, the

machine has significantly lowered operating costs. “The machine uses less power and has reduced our operating costs. The ability to turn it off when tasks are complete is a big saving.”

Precision has also improved dramatically. “We can handle big sheets with big rigging easily, and the accuracy is unmatched. It’s easier to program and run, making production smoother than ever.”

Outstanding service

Fabtops’ experience with HOMAG didn’t end at the point of sale; their ongoing support has been a standout feature. “The machine has been so reliable that we’ve only had to call HOMAG once since installation. In fact, they rang us the other week because they hadn’t heard from us and wanted to make sure we were getting on OK! I’ve been in this industry long enough to know – that level of service is rare indeed.

“The CENTATEQ N-210 is helping us do what we’ve always done – only faster, better, and more efficiently”

“I also want to give a special mention to Dereck Reed, the HOMAG agent in Ireland. From the moment we met, Dereck’s service was first-class. He got us on track right away, inviting us to the HOMAG HQ in England and introducing us to Paul. Within two weeks, they had our programmes ready to run on our Corian surfaces, which was just so impressive.”

Looking ahead

While Fabtops remains content with their niche market and manageable size, they’re already considering expanding their product range. With the

CENTATEQ N-210 as the cornerstone of their workshop, their next move will undoubtedly involve HOMAG.

“We’re not chasing wild growth, but when it’s time to expand, HOMAG will be our first choice. For now, the CENTATEQ N-210 is helping us do what we’ve always done – only faster, better, and more efficiently. We couldn’t be happier with the investment.”

Streamlining modular housing production with Striebig

In the modular housing sector, manufacturers are increasingly turning to Striebig vertical panel saws to optimise production and maintain sustainability. Earlier this year, TM Machinery caught up with one of its clients, a leading UK-based modular housing manufacturer, to find out how Striebig machines have played a key role in supporting their production process, improving efficiency, and reducing waste —20 months after the installation of their latest Striebig vertical panel saw, the automated Control model.

“We needed machinery that could sustain our high production volumes without compromising on quality or sustainability,” starts Marius Bucovanu, Engineering Manager. “Striebig’s vertical panel saws fit the bill perfectly, delivering consistently accurate cuts across various materials while minimising waste – all within a compact footprint.”

As production demands increased, precision cutting became critical for maintaining the high-quality standards expected in modular housing. Traditional table saws lacked the space efficiency, accuracy, and dust control features offered by Striebig saws, making them ideally suited for lean manufacturing. Striebig’s saws also offer the flexibility to work

with materials such as cement boards, plywood, non-ferrous metals, and plastics – capabilities essential for modular construction, where a range of materials are often needed.

Marius highlights, “The Striebig allows us to maximise our workspace, which is crucial when every square foot counts. We achieve precise cuts for each module, minimising rework and material waste, and our team values the saw’s reliability.”

The company first invested in a manual Striebig saw in 2017, and it quickly became a reliable workhorse as production demands increased. The team was impressed by its durability and precision, which helped them maintain their production standards. “The manual saw

“With their ability to cut diverse materials accurately and the ease of switching between tasks, these saws have streamlined workflows and minimised material waste”

was great – it gave us the consistency we needed when our volumes started to rise,” Marius explains. “But as our needs grew, we knew it was time to take the next step.”

By 2022, as demand for modular housing continued to grow, the company recognised that automation was the key to streamlining production. The manual saw had done its job, but the addition of the fully automated Striebig Control model in October 2022 marked a significant shift in their production process.

“We found that by adding a fully automated Striebig saw, we could improve both capacity and precision,” says Marius. “Before the automated saw, our capacity was limited, and we had to make manual adjustments for certain design features, which occasionally resulted in waste due to operator error. The new automated saw allows us to make these adjustments from the system, eliminating those issues entirely.”

Marius Bucovanu, Engineering Manager

The addition of the automated Striebig saw also improved the overall workflow. Marius explains, “We significantly reduced labour costs and minimised the need for a second shift. The new system increased capacity without requiring additional staffing or overtime, saving us £25,000 annually in shift-related costs.”

With Striebig’s reputation for precision and efficiency, TM Machinery recommended the automated Compact model to support high production while remaining cost-effective. Marius notes, “TM Machinery understood our specific requirements and guided us to the right model. Their honest approach meant we invested only in what was essential.”

Striebig saws also support sustainable manufacturing with advanced dust management features. Paired with an AL-KO Mobil Jet 160 dust extraction system, they help to keep the workspace cleaner and safer by significantly reducing airborne particles.

Marius shares, “The Striebig and AL-KO combination has really helped us maintain a cleaner shop floor, and the low-noise extraction system is ideal for singlemachine use without a costly centralised setup.”

Since the installation of the second saw in October 2022, the company has seen marked improvements in productivity and flexibility. With their ability to cut diverse materials accurately and the ease of switching between tasks, these saws have streamlined workflows and minimised material waste – a reduction of up to 16% in some areas. “We’re able to adapt to last-minute changes and urgent orders without delays, and the

straightforward setup allows us to quickly shift between tasks, which supports our lean manufacturing approach,” Marius explains.

This successful implementation owes much to TM Machinery’s continued support, with their experienced team providing guidance through setup, maintenance, and optimisation. Marius shares, “TM has been fantastic – they’re not just a vendor; they’re part of our extended team.” Their knowledgeable engineers helped ensure the smooth integration of the saws and have been responsive to any needs, ensuring consistent operational efficiency.

For one of the UK’s leading modular housing manufacturers, where precision, sustainability, and efficiency are essential, Striebig’s vertical panel saws have proven transformative. With dedicated support from TM Machinery, the company has not only optimised workflows but also set a new standard for quality and efficiency in the modular construction industry.

The Black and White Building

Standing 17.8m tall, the Black & White Building is an artful example of timber construction. Aside from its concrete foundations and a slab, everything bar the connections is made of timber ...

“872 pieces of timber were used in the building, and arrived by truck before being craned into place”

The client – workspace providers, The Office Group – required an office space with built-in adaptability, and one which allowed for future layout changes, at a site in Shoreditch, East London.

When The Office Group first acquired the site, it had planning permission for a new-build office space. The site had two existing buildings on it, one of which was a timber building, about 115 years old, that had been a curing shed for an old timber company; behind it was a 1970s concrete and steel building.

The possibility of refurbishment was examined, but, unfortunately, proved not to be viable. As such, The Office Group were concerned about the embodied carbon cost of the new building. Despite having an in-house team of designers, the group’s preference is to collaborate with external architects.

For this particular project, its longterm collaborators, Waugh Thistleton Architects, were selected, and provided a solution centred upon engineered timber.

The structure

The Black & White Building’s structure comprises a frame made of a beech-based laminated veneer lumber (LVL), with crosslaminated timber (CLT) floor slabs and core. 872 pieces of timber were used in the building, and arrived by truck before being craned into place.

“It is primarily the strength and stability of the LVL that provides the structural frame with strength comparable to one made of steel,” explains Andrew Waugh. “Yet the structure weighs some 20 to 30 per cent less than a comparable concrete one.”

The beech LVL in the frame’s beams and columns was sourced from near Frankfurt and is “equivalent in strength to C50/60 concrete”. This allows the frame to take all the gravitational load, while the softwood CLT of the floor slabs and core provide the shear capacity.

Moisture management

One challenge for any timber building is dealing with water, and thus, numerous precautions were taken to avoid any potential water ingress.

The roof has an inherent fall to it and, at the building’s completion, had tapered gutters to direct water to outlets.

The CLT in the floor slabs in the bathrooms – which are located next to the core on each floor – were removed. This was replaced by joists and plywood, which not only satisfied the insurers, but was also cheaper.

Interior

‘An adaptable building is a sustainable one’ was a key concept behind the design. There are no structural internal partition walls in the Black & White building, so the workspaces are large and open.

Additional space was gained by services being inlaid into the LVL beams, leaving plenty of opportunity for layout customisation in any alternative future uses of the building.

Windows are openable throughout, and timber is left exposed almost everywhere internally, with even the main staircase being timber.

TEK Contracts accelerates growth with HOMAG’s DRILLTEQ V-310 and EDGETEQ S-300

Founded in 2005, TEK Contracts is a family-owned business based in Burntwood, specialising in bespoke joinery and shopfitting for diverse sectors, including leisure, retail, and healthcare. With a 13,000 sq. ft. facility and a skilled team of 19, TEK delivers tailored solutions that not only meet each client’s unique requirements, but meets them in style.

TEK’s commitment to quality, which they have maintained for 19 years, has ensured their continued growth. To keep pace with their own success, however, they needed to fully embrace an automated workflow by investing in machinery that was up to the task. Waiting in the wings was HOMAG.

The shift to automation

For Chris, TEK’s Managing Director, the journey began with the implementation of a new software system, Microvellum, which automated TEK’s previously manual processes. “Microvellum was transformative,” Chris explains, “but the issue was that our machines weren’t equipped to work at that level. To fully commit to automation, we needed machines that were on technological par with the Microvellum software.”

Selecting the right machines for future growth

After evaluating several manufacturers over six months, TEK found that HOMAG’s exceptional service distinguished them from competitors. “Good service was one of our main criteria – we suspected that we could do better than what we were currently getting.”

As for the machines, TEK initially considered the DRILLTEQ V-200 but set their sights instead on the V-310 after witnessing its capabilities firsthand at HOMAG’s Castle Donington workshop. “Despite it being a bigger machine than what we actually needed at the time, we couldn’t resist the V-310. We knew that it would open a lot of doors for the future growth of the business.”

To support their vision, TEK also upgraded their edgebanding process with the EDGETEQ S-300, consolidating all

“With

machinery under the HOMAG brand for consistency. And as Chris explains, TEK have no intention of stopping at just a drill and edgebander: “Our next purchase will be HOMAG’s CENTATEQ N-210, a CNC machining centre – we’re itching to press go on that one!”

Immediate impact and future potential “The machines have made our lives easier and improved our operation in every conceivable way,” praises Chris. “Our previous workflow was a little on the awkward side, requiring manual adjustments at almost every stage of the process. With HOMAG’s machines working alongside Microvellum, we’ve streamlined our operations and have become a lot more efficient.”

The new machines have also unlocked future opportunities. “For example, we’re now able to essentially provide flatpacks of furniture – with the parts pre-cut, edged, and drilled – as well as preassembled furniture, which has increased our potential client base significantly.”

Chris and his team have also been pleased with the service. “As I mentioned, one of our main reasons for choosing HOMAG was their reputation for top-quality service – and they didn’t disappoint. It’s been outstanding. If ever there’s a fault or issue, a HOMAG technician arrives within 24 hours of us flagging it, without fail.

“And I’d like to give a special mention to Jon, our HOMAG sales rep. He was really on the ball, happy to answer any questions or queries, and if he didn’t know something he went and found out and came back to us with an answer. We still speak with Jon; he checks in on how we’re getting on with the machine. You do get the sense that HOMAG genuinely cares about your business.”

HOMAG’s machines working alongside Microvellum, we’ve streamlined our operations and have become a lot more efficient”

Installation and training

Both the EDGETEQ S-300 and DRILLTEQ V-310 were installed at the start of 2024. Chris reflects: “The installation was smooth; we wanted both machines to arrive at a similar time, which HOMAG were happy to accommodate.”

Next came four days of training for each of the machines. “I can’t fault the training, either,” says Chris. “It’s a lot of information to take in, but HOMAG presented it very well and took the time to ensure we were comfortable with everything.”

Looking ahead with confidence

With HOMAG’s ongoing support and machinery that enhances productivity and product quality, TEK Contracts is well-positioned to meet future demands, increase production capacity, and capitalise on new market opportunities.

The latest SCM innovations for panel sizing

The gabbiani p range has expanded to incorporate the new p95 and pt95 models, suitable for both batch one and mass production. Automated machines – affordable to all users – ensure the production process is intuitive and safe. These new models are equipped with all the higher-end features and options that the market demands, including:

• FLEXCUT 1/S: more cuts in less time. High performance is enabled by the use of two fully independent pushers. There’s a dramatic reduction

in machine cycle time due to the simultaneous processing of multiple bars with differentiated cuts (with a maximum number of two side-byside 600mm bars).

• Cutting with high finishes up to 50 m/min. thanks to blade motors with power up to 18.5 kW.

• Led indicators of both front and rear loading in the presence of a lifting table. An intelligent led bar system guides the user during the processing stages for intuitive and

safe production monitoring. In the version with the lifting table, the system guides the user to the correct forklift loading of the panel stack, signals the need for a stack change, and signals, if present, the removal of the pallet/martyr.

• Led device for guided positioning of movable air floating tables: an intelligent led system that indicates to the user the correct positioning of the movable air floating tables with respect to the format of the panels being processed.

• The angular cutting device provides for inclination of the squaring guide by handwheel and automatic positioning at panel dimension by a linear stop positioned on the main pusher.

“An intelligent led bar system guides the user during the processing stages for intuitive and safe production monitoring”

MAESTRO STACKWISE

MAESTRO STACKWISE is a state-ofthe-art solution designed to increase efficiency and productivity. The system uses advanced algorithms to analyse and optimise piece stacking during the madeto-measure cutting process, ensuring that they are strategically placed to achieve maximum efficiency, reducing scraps to a minimum and maximising return.

MAESTRO OPTIWISE

In the manufacturing industry, competition is not just based on its ability to offer a quality product. Nowadays, being able to rely on sustainable processes which optimise both the consumption of raw materials and relative costs as much as possible, is an increasingly decisive factor. A requirement which has become ever more pressing for companies working with wood. Panel cutting is a particularly crucial part of the production cycle, and any improvement in this area could have a very significant impact on profits. This is why SCM has developed its Maestro optiwise optimisation software for panel saws. Let’s take a look at its main advantages:

Less waste

One of the most significant advantages in using Maestro optiwise is its ability to maximise the use of material. SCM’s software was designed to optimise panel cutting diagrams, reducing waste to a

minimum.

The software intelligently arranges the cuts by ensuring that as much as possible of each sheet of material is used.

Sustainability and cost reduction

The efficient use of material achieved with SCM’s software can help companies reduce the impact on the environment while simultaneously bringing down production costs.

Increased productivity

Maestro optiwise’s easy parameter setting allows you to “customise” the cutting result to suit actual production demand, after which, SCM’s panel saw optimises the steps needed to machine the material. So, not only is time saved but the machine’s lifespan is extended thanks to reduced wear.

Simpler management

Maestro optiwise’s user-friendly interface simplifies the entire machining process. It is easy to use and integrates perfectly with the panel saw, making it accessible even to less qualified operators. This advantage reduces training times and the risk of error.

Customisation and flexibility

Maestro optiwise is not a “standard” solution. The software can be customised

to meet specific production requirements. Parameters and priorities can also be set to suit objectives and company preferences, so that the software adapts to one’s specific needs.

Reporting

Maestro optiwise offers complete reporting tools. This approach, based on data, helps companies make strategic changes to further optimise their work.

Integration with other SCM solutions

Maestro optiwise integrates perfectly with SCM’s extensive range of products, enhancing efficiency and productivity. Investing in Maestro optiwise means achieving the maximum potential from an SCM panel saw and opening up unimaginable new horizons for one’s business.

Investing in the future with Ferwood

For Essex-based Mason Projects, who began manufacturing high-end bespoke joinery solutions for the private and commercial market in the wake of a global pandemic, clear direction for the future and a plan to overhaul its original machinery within 18 months was at the heart of its business model. With the help of used machinery specialist, Ferwood UK, the company was able to invest in a Biesse Rover A CNC router and Holzma HPP230 Beam Saw to help them reach their production goals.

“We originally started our business in 2017 to work in partnership with two existing joinery companies, but in a relatively short period of time, one folded and the other closed due to retirement,” begins Kerry Mason, Co-Director of Mason Projects Ltd. “We made the decision to start manufacturing bespoke joinery ourselves and took on the lease of our 15,000sqft factory in May 2020.

“Budget was tight,” admits Kerry. “Most of our staff members came from the other two companies, as did some of our equipment. In theory, we could start manufacturing from day one but we soon ran into problems due to the age of our machines. This is where Ferwood came in.”

“Ferwood not only had machines in stock and available to view, but they could also test the machine and do all the heavy lifting – leaving us to get on with our day jobs”

The family-run business couldn’t afford new machinery – nor could they afford to wait for a machine when faced with longer than normal lead times due to the pandemic, but Ferwood’s Ferwood Functional buying option – which sees used machinery function tested before being installed to reassure customers the machine they are buying is in good order –ticked the box.

“Ferwood’s offering really worked for us,” says Kerry. “Ferwood not only had machines in stock and available to view, but they could also test the machine and do all the heavy lifting – leaving us to get on with our day jobs.” Kerry adds, “Their prices also meant that we could spread our budget more widely and invest in other machines and areas of the business.”

The need for modern machinery with updated technology was a huge factor for the ambitious company. Paul Mason, Co-Director of Mason Projects says, “We had an operational factory but we needed it to work efficiently. We needed to work smart in order for our company to move forward. For us, this meant stepping away from the manual imputing of data directly onto the machines and being able to transfer data from the office directly onto our machines.”

Kerry and Paul wanted to replace their failing Busellato Jet 3000 CNC router and their unreliable Holzma beam saw. “We had a rough idea what we wanted but the team were great at explaining each of the machine’s core processes and limitations,” says Paul.

Working predominantly with 8 x 4 MDF, as well as Medite and Egger board measuring 18mm thick, a Biesse Rover A

4-axis pod and rail and Holzma HPP230 Beam Saw were the best fit for Mason Projects.

“The difference when each machine was installed was like night and day,” admits Paul. “Both machines have massively changed how we work and have significantly reduced production times and human error. Jobs that would have taken us a day due to our aging technology can now take us a couple of hours. This has had a massive knock on effect throughout the business and has given us much needed flexibility on the factory floor.”

Working in tandem, the new machines have allowed the company to take on bigger projects and maintain strong profit margins. “We’ve recently finished a project that saw us create hundreds of wardrobes for a housing developer. This saw us produce large quantities of carcasses tht needed to be consistently accurate and cleanly cut before being moved to the CNC and edgebander. This is where the beamsaw really came into its own. It was so much simpler to programme and quicker and more precise when performing each cut cycle.

“As a company, we’re not afraid of change and we wanted to invest in the right machinery to help us grow,” Kerry concludes. “Ferwood have given us the tools we needed to make every success of our business. Now, we’re working towards doubling our capacity in the next four years.”

Upgraded as well as brand new power tools launched by Mirka

As a family-owned Finnish company, Mirka is widely recognised as being a highly focused and enlightened business with numerous attributes that help the company stand out from its peers.

Our editorial director, John Legg, attended a recent product launch in Milton Keynes, which once more served to underline Mirka’s stated continuous development strategy, as well as showing a significant commitment to its long-held sustainability mantra, which could well see the company anchoring itself at the very centre of the challenges surrounding the life-cycle of the industry’s abrasive products.

Mirka has, for more than 80 years, been focused on developing abrasives and tools under the same roof in Jeppo, Finland. At the core of company business is sustainability. Not only does Mirka put great effort into ensuring that its products are of high quality, but also

that its production has as little impact on the environment as possible. The company’s mission, ‘Our ambition is to give people the opportunity to perform better’, is highlighted by its commitment to continuous improvement, including a number of innovations such as in 2000, the invention of Abranet®, the world’s first net abrasive which heralded dust-free sanding, and in 2013, the award-winning Mirka® DEROS sander, Mirka has to be regarded as a pioneer in our industry.

Regarding the new tools, the new DEROS II (DEROS standing for Direct Electric Random Orbital Sander) has a number of improvements over the first version, but is thankfully blessed with the same assured handling and performance of the original.

First of all, the brushless motor has increased from 350W to 400W, which adds to the smooth, controlled performance of the tool, and this also helps improve stability in the hand,

“Whilst the new extractor is a design departure from its forebear, the new design delivers advantages to improve practicalities in a number of ways”

lowering the vibration readings. There is also a new LED display, which provides the user with an easy, clear reference. With an existing choice of ø125/150mm pads, DEROS II 5650CV is a premium product and, for many, the most natural sander design in the hand. Its compact size, symmetrical design and supreme ergonomics elevate this tool above the norm. Standard features, including the soft start and the variable power band, ensure the tool is controlled in use and intuitive under load.

Those looking for something with a wider capacity will appreciate the new

New and updated sanders plus a completely new dust extractor have recently been launched
Neil Newbrook, Business Sector Manager Wood, Mirka UK

Mirka® DEROS 750CV with a ø175mm pad, which will be great for faster stock removal, especially on larger flat surfaces.

The upgraded DEROS II now also comes with improved Bluetooth connectivity and a two-plus-one-year warranty, the updated DEROS II is a compelling option.

The sibling Mirka® DEOS sander with its rectangular and delta pad formats also benefits from the new upgrades of a 400W motor, the LED display, improved Bluetooth connectivity and lower HAV readings.

For joiners, carpenters, flooring and wall-panelling installers and those working on large flat surfaces requiring plenty of stock removal, the new Mirka® DEROS RS 600 sander will undoubtedly be of interest. Weighing in at 1.8kg with a powerful 750W brushless motor, the RS is impressively quiet in use at just 61dB –and that’s in either what Mirka describes as the Standard or Ramp-Up modes.

Whilst being easy to use, this is a powerful, heavy-duty sander, that undoubtedly has an appetite for stripping back stock safely and quickly and readily copes with all manner of surfaces, including solid surface, wood, metal and painted surfaces.

Another key introduction from Mirka, alongside the new and upgraded sanders, is an intrinsic and critical element of Mirka’s clean, dust-free sanding solution, that being the all-important dust extractor. Mirka’s new dust extractor – the Mirka® DEXOS – is a completely new design which follows the Mirka DNA of being compact and ergonomic but adds a new level of user-friendliness.

“The new DEROS II (DEROS standing for Direct Electric Random Orbital Sander) has a number of improvements over the first version, but is thankfully blessed with the same assured handling and performance of the original”

Designed from the ground up to be part of Mirka’s next generation of power tools, the Mirka® DEXOS 1217 M AFC dust extractor features numerous clever touches to make sanding easier and more efficient for the operator.

Whilst the new extractor is a design departure from its forebear, the new design delivers advantages to improve practicalities in a number of ways. From the top of the unit, the cable, hose and sleeve, which used to wrap around the body, can now neatly be stored inside the top of the lid – which also makes for the perfect tea break perch! Additional usability benefits come

From left: the DEOS II and DEROS II sanders have been upgraded, and a new 175mm pad is an option for the latter
The DEOS II is ideal on things with square corners

in the form of a second socket, to have another tool plugged in, or as a battery or phone charger, for instance. When used with two tools plugged in, the autostart functionality will kick in on both. A usefully updated brushless electric motor makes the DEXOS quietly impressive, delivering increased efficiency whilst requiring less energy and having a longer life cycle. This M class dust extractor also boasts a simplified method when having to change the dust bag and has easy-to-replace filters to boot. In terms of handling, the DEXOS tips

the scales at 13kg and is easy to move around with sturdy rear wheels and rubber tyres. On the rear of the unit, it also has a new, user-friendly foot-operated brake pedal.

Mirka has clearly been busy of late, informed and empowered by the feedback it generates from its customers, this innovation-forward stance is serving the company well. And what’s more, there are further upgrades and introductions promised for 2025.

With developments to the DEROS II and DEOS II sanders, Mirka has delivered

“Mirka’s

new DEROS RS 600 sander will undoubtedly be of interest. Weighing in at 1.8kg with a powerful 750W brushless motor the RS is impressively quiet in use at just 61dB – and that’s in either what Mirka describes as the Standard or Ramp-Up modes”

stronger performance and practical upgrades to what were already excellent tools. Alongside which, the introduction of the highly capable DEROS RS rotary sander will deliver the required punch and consistency for those needing a more aggressive stock removal tool.

Capping it all off, the brand new DEXOS with clear design and usability improvements – doubtless informed by its customer base – represents a step change in dust extractor usability, which will be roundly welcomed by fans of the yellow and black tools.

Building smarter, faster, better: ar18’s manufacturing upgrade with Microvellum

Founded in 2003, ar18 operates out of a 25,000 sq. ft. facility in Uxbridge, offering a comprehensive range of services – from retail furniture and display stands to bespoke, one-ofa-kind pieces. Their expertise spans CNC machining, joinery, paint spraying, metalwork, and printing, supporting clients from concept to final product.

As client expectations evolved and projects grew more complex, ar18 recognised the need to accelerate their design process and efficiently manage outputs across multiple CNC machines. Staying ahead in today’s competitive market required embracing cutting-edge technology and streamlining every aspect of their workflow.

Challenges that prompted a search for solutions ar18 faced challenges common to many manufacturers: outdated tools and fragmented processes were slowing progress and creating unnecessary complexity. Routine tasks consumed significant time, delaying order processing and straining resources. Client demands for tailored product variations and repeat bespoke work further exposed the limitations of their existing systems, with design adjustments often leading to errors, increased material waste, and extended production timelines.

The need for a smarter, more connected solution – one that could streamline workflows, improve accuracy, and enable faster, more consistent results – became impossible to ignore.

Why Microvellum was the right fit

In 2023, ar18 implemented Microvellum Software, a decision that transformed their operations. “Microvellum has increased the speed and accuracy at which projects can be completed, and it’s hard to think of not having it,” shares Gurney Peterson, Design Manager at ar18.

One of the first advantages ar18 experienced was Microvellum’s seamless integration with AutoCAD. As an industryleading CAD software used by millions of designers, drafters, and engineers worldwide, AutoCAD is a critical tool for creating precise 2D and 3D designs. With Microvellum, all the manufacturing data is embedded directly within the product drawings. Once their CAD designs are

approved, projects can be sent straight to production without the need for additional steps, significantly saving time and minimising errors.

Microvellum’s open architecture brought unparalleled flexibility. “With Microvellum, we’re not limited by predefined products,” says Gurney. “No two joinery jobs are the same. With Microvellum, we bid on any project, engineer any design, and make almost anything. The flexibility means we’re never boxed in.” This adaptability has allowed ar18 to confidently take on diverse projects, from cabinetry and retail fit-outs to bespoke furniture for bars

and restaurants. “The ability to access the backend of the products and work with the parametric logic provides much greater versatility compared to other software.”

A key to this success is Microvellum’s library data, which balances standardisation with customisation. It ensures consistent quality across projects while enabling tailored solutions for clientspecific needs.

Transforming production and reporting

With three MultiCam 3000 CNC routers, two Weeke Vantage CNC machining centres, and a Homag STORETEQ, ar18 relies on precision machinery to maintain high-quality production. Microvellum’s direct integration with this equipment has streamlined processes, automating tasks from g-code generation to part optimisation and labelling. This seamless connection has maximised efficiency and precision while eliminating the need for additional third-party software.

Microvellum’s reporting tools have introduced a new level of efficiency and insight. With an integrated report designer and access to an open database, ar18 can generate detailed production reports for every project while also having the flexibility to create fully customised reports tailored to their specific needs. “The purchasing of materials, hardware, and our assembly and edge banding processes have improved with the various reports that can be produced,”

Additionally, Microvellum’s Solid Modelling Tools have expanded ar18’s capabilities. These tools allow users to analyse 3D models and assemblies to create CNC-ready products, ensuring

“The software has empowered the team to confidently tackle complex and creative projects while providing a scalable solution to support their expansion”

precision and efficiency in production. By leveraging this functionality, ar18 has engineered and visualised highly customised products like display fixtures, bespoke bars, and restaurant seating. Whether working with AutoCAD models or importing designs from other software, ar18 ensures every part meets exact specifications, minimising errors and delays.

The ability to generate detailed reports and visualise complex designs has also enhanced communication with clients, fostering stronger relationships and greater transparency throughout the project lifecycle.

Growth and new opportunities

Microvellum has not only addressed ar18’s challenges but also set the stage for long-term growth. The software has

empowered the team to confidently tackle complex and creative projects while providing a scalable solution to support their expansion into a state-of-the-art factory with cutting-edge machinery. By embracing innovation and streamlining their processes, ar18 has improved efficiency and positioned itself to explore new markets and opportunities. Microvellum’s flexibility, precision, and robust tools have become integral to their ability to meet the demands of their diverse client base.

For ar18, Microvellum is more than just a software solution – it’s a trusted partner in their journey toward continued success. As they look to the future, the partnership is a cornerstone of their strategy for growth, enabling them to redefine what’s possible in modern manufacturing. www.microvellum.com

As reflected by exhibitors on the autumn trade fair circuit, linoleum fronts are celebrating a comeback in kitchen design. Furniture makers who wish to implement this kitchen trend for their customers can find matching linoleum edgings from Ostermann.

Linoleum in the kitchen goes as far back as the early 20th century, when worktops of sideboards were coated with this robust material. Modern plastics then took over, and durable linoleum disappeared for a longer period. Now, it is experiencing something of a resurgence, favoured for its antistatic and antibacterial properties.

Furniture makers who want to use linoleum for kitchen fronts to create something special for their customers can get the surface material in rolls or cut to size from Ostermann. Edgings made from the same material finish off the furniture and give it a truly high-grade look.

Ostermann stocks all surfaces and matching edgings in 24 modern colours. Alternatively, it can also supply ready-toinstall linoleum furniture fronts made to

measure with matching linoleum edgings. All information on the available surfaces, edgings and services can be found under the search term “highlights12” on the Ostermann website www.ostermann.eu.

Ostermann linoleum edgings have proven their practical worth in manifold applications since their introduction to the market. They are available in three widths (26, 36 and 46 mm) from stock and can be applied either with an edgebanding machine or manually. For machine processing, Ostermann’s experts recommend using a PUR hotmelt adhesive, such as REDOCOL Kantomelt PUR.

Applied as fronts with light and bright colours such as “Spring green”, “Orange blast”, or “Pistachio”, Ostermann’s Furniture Linoleum Desktop immediately brings a cheerful mood to the kitchen. For a more discreet look, the company also offers rolled goods for pressing in many other neutral colours. The corresponding backing is important when processing the rolls.

Titus expands T-type hinges with two innovative additions

Two innovative new products have been added to the highly successful range of T-type hinges from cabinet hardware expert, Titus. The T-type PressTo offers fast and easy tool-less hinge mounting, while the T-type-i 170 allows cabinet doors to open to a full 170º with an integrated damper. Like all products in the T-type range, the new additions reliably deliver the soft closing action preferred by end users, and are suitable for use with door thicknesses from 15 to 26mm.

The new T-type PressTo is securely locked to the door simply by pressing on the integrated mounting lever. No tools are needed, and an audible click confirms that the hinge has been properly mounted.

This arrangement simplifies hinge installation, saves time, and is equally suitable for factory- or home-assembled products.

Developed to allow full access to cabinet interiors, the T-type-i 170 combines wideangle opening with an integrated damper to ensure smooth, controlled operation. It offers exceptional stability throughout its operating range and provides zero door protrusion at a door opening angle of 90º, making it an ideal choice for use in kitchen units with inner drawers or pull-out systems.

T-type hinges feature the renowned Titus ‘Confident Close’, the consumer-preferred reliable and consistent soft-close damping characterised by late-start deceleration

and quiet landing in the last stage of closing as the door leans against the cabinet side. The proprietary Titus multipurpose integrated damping technology is positioned transversal in the hinge cup, ensuring life-long damping with no bounce-back and superior performance.

In addition, the hinges are exceptionally tolerant of misalignment and drilling variations. Their unique 3Way tool-less snap-on mounting plate, which offers intuitive hinge-to-plate mounting in three directions, greatly simplifies door installation, especially with tall doors that need four or even five hinges. The unique design of the mounting plate reinforces stability and rigidity while maintaining smooth hinge operation.

Titus T-type hinges have passed FIRA tests for BS 6222-2-2009, Test Level H and can be supplied with cross-mounting plates or with linear mounting plates that simplify both hinge alignment and hingeto-plate attachment.

Cabinet Face Frames – no compressor required!

Kitchen cabinets with a beaded face frame immediately convey a high level of quality and craftsmanship, and precisely machined joints and accurately fitted inset doors and drawers elevate even the simplest single door design. The task of producing such high-quality, tasteful kitchen designs falls upon the cabinetmaker.

The most common approach to manufacture beaded face frames is to use square profiles and to apply the bead moulding separately. The major disadvantage to this system is the time required to produce a complete frame.

Other problems include mismatched grain and colour on stained cabinets, as well as mismatched mitre joints due to inconsistent bead mouldings. Another concern is the potential for glue-joint separation between the square section and the bead moulding.

The Hoffmann Beaded Face Frame System offers cabinet and millwork shops of all sizes a fast, precise and efficient way to manufacture beaded face frames, whether it’s one or one hundred frames per job. Starting with beaded moulding, all the above-mentioned disadvantages would be eliminated from the start. The stiles are notched and the rails are coped on the MORSØ fixed-blade, guillotine style notching machine.

The MORSØ-NF is a patented footoperated notch cutting machine for cutting window bars, mullions, and cabinet front frames requiring haunch joints. It cuts all kinds of wood, plastic, MDF and plywood. MORSØ-NF leaves the cut surface of the wood perfectly smooth and accurate, requiring no further preparation before joining.

A second step takes place on the Hoffmann dovetail routing machine (MU3), equipped with special fixtures for the notched material. Dovetail keyways are routed in all mating parts and the frames are assembled simply with glue and Dovetail Keys. When the two parts are drawn together using a Hoffmann key, a precise, durable and accurate joint is produced without the aid of clamps or alignment jigs. The frames can be sanded and finished immediately upon assembly. www.hoffmann-uk.com

How will your business cope with the energy price cap increase?

The UK’s soaring energy prices are already causing financial strain to some small businesses, and yet the energy price cap is set to rise in early 2025. Managing spiralling operational costs in an already uncertain market is crippling some small businesses, with the only possible solutions being to raise prices for customers or absorb the losses themselves.

There are already signs that people are tightening their belts in this current economic climate. With both household and commercial budgets already being squeezed, many business owners are fearful of increasing prices in case it alienates their clientele.

Over the past few years, UK energy prices have surged. For small businesses with energy-intensive operations, such as manufacturing companies, this sharp increase has a huge effect on the bottom line.

Despite the bleak landscape, some businesses are managing to find alternative solutions. Those companies that generate or have access to waste

wood could benefit from purchasing a wood waste heater. Wood waste heaters allow businesses to convert waste wood into affordable and renewable energy, slashing energy and waste disposal costs simultaneously.

Whilst the purchase of a wood waste heater requires an initial investment, the payback period can be quite short. Businesses that generate waste wood are urged to find out more and do some calculations, as with the savings on energy and waste disposal costs, some businesses can get payback on their investment in a wood waste heater in less than 12 months.

Wood Waste Technology offers a range of durable, reliable and easy-to-use wood waste heaters to suit all sizes of businesses.

By investing in a wood waste heater, a business can benefit from free factory heating whilst saving money on skips and other waste disposal charges, as well as helping reduce a company’s carbon footprint.

BPI facilitates seamless retirement transition for AM Products

A M Products, a well-respected joinery manufacturing business based in Highbridge, Somerset, faced a significant turning point when its owner, Andrew Willment, made the decision to retire. After years of successfully leading a progressive operation in the high-end kitchen and bedroom manufacturing sector, Andrew sought an efficient and profitable solution for exiting the business.

The challenge

A M Products had built a strong reputation for producing high-quality joinery over the years. As Andrew approached retirement, he knew it was time to step away from the day-to-day operations of the business. With advanced machinery, tools, and stock in place, Andrew faced the challenge of finding the best way to sell these assets while ensuring maximum return.

After reading about BPI, Andrew felt confident that its deep industry knowledge

“BPI implemented targeted marketing strategies to attract the right buyers, resulting in a highly successful online auction”

and strong reputation would help him achieve a smooth and seamless exit.

Having heard of BPI’s expertise in asset disposal, particularly for businesses transitioning into retirement, he decided to reach out.

The solution

BPI’s team responded quickly, setting up a comprehensive auction strategy for A M Products’ entire contents. This included a range of high-quality CNC machinery, tools, and stock – essential assets for any woodworking operation.

The standout assets of the sale included:

• 2020 SCM Morbidelli X200 3 Axis CNC Router

• 2018 SCM Stefani KDR CNC Hot Melt Edgebander

• 2020 SCM Gabbiani S95 CNC Beam Saw

• 2016 SCM Morbidelli Machining Centre

• 2018 SCM Stefani Edgebander

• 2016 and 2018 Compressors

• 2000 Mitsubishi SE 3000kg Gas Powered Forklift Truck

• Tooling, stocks and more

In total, the auction featured 125 lots of high-quality equipment and materials. The BPI team worked efficiently, cataloguing

and photographing the items, and completing the lotting process in just two days. BPI implemented targeted marketing strategies to attract the right buyers, resulting in a highly successful online auction.

The process was further streamlined thanks to A M Products’ clean, wellorganised premises and Andrew’s cooperation. With a dedicated machine mover on-site, BPI facilitated collections over the course of a week, ensuring a smooth transition from sale to removal.

The results

The sale exceeded expectations, with a total hammer price of over £147,000 – an outstanding result that maximised the value of A M Products’ assets.

Andrew was delighted with the outcome, praising the efficiency and professionalism displayed by the BPI team throughout the entire process.

“Please pass on my sincere thanks to all your colleagues for their hard work in delivering a positive outcome from the auction,” says Andrew. I’m delighted with how smooth and successful the process was, and I’m now able to retire with peace of mind.”

My friend and competitor, the late Bob Talbott

Chris Franklin, MD at Ranheat Engineering Ltd – a leading UK manufacturer of wood combustion equipment –continues his series of articles exclusively for Furniture and Joinery Production. This month, he remembers and writes about one of the pioneers of industrial wood-waste heating systems in the UK, Bob Talbott.

Bob’s first foray into woodburning was via a woodburning stove and cooker retail outlet in a village called Eccleshall. Bob was also a serving fireman for 18 years. The stove shop led Bob onto industrial heaters for the woodworking industry.

I first met Bob in the 80’s. Ranheat were mainly boilerbased systems at that time, and Talbotts were mainly warm air heaters. So, although we were to some extent competitors, we used to pass each other enquiries. I would pass warm air enquiries to Bob and he would pass boilerbased enquiries to me.

Bob had wonderful tales about his experiences as a fireman. One day, he was called to a chimney fire nearby. On arrival, he recognised the owner as he had sold them a wood burning stove recently. He kept his breathing apparatus on, hoping she would not recognise him!

We always met up at the “woodmex” exhibitions, and over the many years we knew each other, we became friends, partly due to our common love of skiing. Bob was an excellent skier (far better than me) and loved the French Alps.

It was with much sadness that I saw on Linkedin that he had sadly passed away on the 20th July 2024, at the age of 76.

Bob was passionate about the use of industrial woodwaste to use on-site to heat factories within the woodworking industry.

Ranheat’s origins were

“Bob was a true pioneer of the wood burning industry in the UK”

in Randers, a small city in Denmark, where wood was a fuel for Danes as they had no reserves of coal, oil or gas. The Danes could not understand why the UK woodworking industry literally sent tonnes of wood-waste to landfill each year.

Bob had a similar vision, zero wood-waste to landfill. As such, warm air space heaters for industrial wood-waste did not exist, so Bob Talbott set about designing a range of hand-loaded warm air heaters, specifically for the UK woodworking industry.

The original units were manufactured in the village

of Eccleshall in Staffordshire.

The Talbott T range soon became synonymous with industrial wood-waste heating as Hoovers were to vacuum cleaners.

As the years passed, Talbotts moved into boiler-based systems with a link with Farm 2000, owned by Peter Teisen (Peters’ father was a Dane).

Bob went on to develop his own range of boilers, and Ranheat developed a range of warm air heaters, mainly automatically fed rather than hand-loaded. It was inevitable that the two companies would overlap, but Bob and I remained friends throughout.

Talbott systems were sold all over the world, not just in the UK. I remember Bob towing a T500 warm air heater down to the Ligna exhibition in Germany. His Ford Sierra was struggling to drive up the loading ramp in Dover to get on the ferry. So they waited until everything else was loaded, then lifted the ramp to level so Bob could drive onto the ferry!

We would sometimes accidentally meet up in Belfast International airport and sit next to each other on the flight home (no doubt we had both been visiting the same customers in Ireland!).

Bob had three children: Amy, Ben and Lucie. Amy Talbott (now Fielding) is a compliance consultant helping customers with all of the permits and permissions needed to burn industrial wood-waste. Ben is in the Biomass industry working on larger installations, and Lucie is a dance instructor. Sadly, Bob was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease, and Talbotts were taken over by the Smiths group, based in Leicestershire, and became part of Airplants Dust Extraction. The name, however, remains in Bob’s memory. He was a true pioneer of the wood-burning industry in the UK.

The BFA aims to address industry-wide challenges and opportunities through its inclusive approach.
