Welcome to our November issue!

When piecing together this edition, the principal theme that emerged was versatility. The option to adapt a piece of machinery to perform a diverse range of functions; the ability of one brand to access and appeal to the demands of many different markets and customer bases; the opportunity to transform or salvage a material intended for an alternate purpose and, perhaps most significantly, the versatility brought about by CNC machining.

From page 18, you can find my interview with the managing director of Lydwood, Emma Jones, who took the helm of the family company in 2021. Celebrating 60 years of trading, the business has evolved from a relatively small outfit making cedar home extensions and one-off production runs, to a multi-faceted operation producing everything from simple components and plywood packaging to complex laminated oak products.

The key to unlocking this potential was the early adoption of CNC routing, with Emma’s father, Nick, acquiring the company’s first CNC router in 1989. As Emma drives the company forward into its next phase of growth, better utilisation of its machinery and an ability to appeal to a diversified array of sectors will be fundamental to Lydwood’s continued success.

From page 40 onwards, you’ll find a curated array of the latest and greatest in CNC machinery, from HOMAG’s pioneering automated solutions for window manufacturing to JJ Smith’s innovative woodworking machinery for garden product manufacturing.

Elsewhere, we focus on Fittings, Materials & Components – headed up by our cover star, Titus, with details of the newest addition to its Tekform family of draw systems – as well as Sanding Technology, with the exciting launch of Mirka®’s DEXOS 1217 M AFC dust extractor.

Happy reading!

OHRA expands sales team in the UK

Optimism remains despite subdued wood imports

Imports for July were higher than in July 2023 – the second consecutive month of growth compared to the previous year – reports TDUK. Import volumes grew by 0.5% in June 2024, followed by 2.9% in July. The deficit of import volumes in 2024 compared to 2023 thus continues to reduce.

Considering that the market saw weaker import volumes during the second half of 2023, if modest improvements were to continue during the second half of 2024, total import volumes for the year will likely move ahead of 2023.

“It’s encouraging to see a continued fall in the timber import deficit for 2024 when compared to the first seven months of 2023,” says TDUK Head of Technical & Trade, Nick Boulton. “While it’s still too early to have a clear idea of second half wood imports, the optimism for increased private housing and RMI in 2025 is certainly encouraging businesses to maintain wood stocks through regular imports rather than letting them fall.” www.timberdevelopment.uk

Celebrating Lydwood’s 60-year success story

In celebration of Lydwood’s 60 years of trading, we spoke with MD Emma Jones to discuss the company’s legacy as a third-generation family business, the extensive expertise and machinery that facilitate its highquality output, and her plans to drive the business forward within an ever more competitive arena ...

It’s always gratifying to see businesses pass from generation to generation, each new proprietor bringing fresh ideas and a new perspective to the table. Established in 1964, Lydwood has passed through three generations, building a firm reputation and a widely-respected breadth of expertise over the course of its 60 years of trading.

Lydwood was the brainchild of Bob Jones, whose love of machinery drove him to swap a career teaching engineering in a local school, cash in his pension, and build a factory in Lydbrook, Gloucestershire.

In 1987, Robert’s son Nick and his wife, Georgie, joined the family business, adding a new dimension – CNC Routing. As talented engineering graduates with backgrounds in aerospace, they were able to introduce state-of-the-art production technology into the woodworking field.

Today, the company is managed by Emma Jones, a qualified Mechanical Engineer whose passion, technical expertise and entrepreneurialism have seen the business grow by an impressive 300%.

“My grandfather started out making cedar home extensions and one-off production runs, such as one-armed bandit machines,” Emma explains.

“The business then became very focused on shields and trophies. Despite being destroyed by fire in 1979, by 1986, the company was producing around 10,000 shields and trophies per week for the UK’s trophy industry.

“My father, Nick, was very early into CNC routing, which opened many doors and avenues of potential work. As a result, the business moved more into being a contract manufacturer of wooden components, primarily for other manufacturers.

“Although the customer base has changed significantly since the early 1990s, that remains the core of the business. However, as CNC routers have become cheaper and more accessible from a technical perspective since that time, our CNC routing work has shifted to be more tailored to the unique capabilities of our routers and the combination of services we can provide.”

Taking on such a legacy from her grandfather and parents is, naturally, a great source of pride for Emma, whose

interest in the industry was sparked in early childhood.

“I have been interested in engineering from a young age – with engineers for parents and growing up around motorbikes, cars and traction engines!” she says.

“I studied Mechanical Engineering at Cardiff University and spent a year working as a Junior Design Engineer at

Williams Advanced Engineering. WAE was the sister company to Williams Formula 1 team, applying F1 technology to a range of different problems. I worked on a range of projects, from electric car platforms through to a BAE Systems Hawk flight simulator.

“After graduating from Cardiff with a First Class degree, I secured a position as a Fuel and Hydraulics design engineer at Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team. There, I learned about complex design work, but also top-level industrial processes around production, quality, reliability and problem solving. I enjoyed some fantastic experiences at Mercedes, including being on the wheel gun in practice pit stops and celebrating two double world championship wins, but found my desire for entrepreneurship was left unfulfilled.

“During the COVID pandemic, in the

summer of 2020, while on holiday in the pouring rain in North Wales, it suddenly occurred to me that Lydwood might present such an opportunity and that my parents were getting older and had no succession plan. I suggested the idea of taking on Lydwood to my parents –expecting a reply of “Are you crazy?” – but they were very receptive to it. I became Managing Director of Lydwood in July 2021. Three years as MD have flown past,

and I am pleased to say that the business has grown over 300% since I joined!”

Emma’s fresh approach to marketing and her innate ability to help customers with product development have catapulted Lydwood into a new phase of growth. Winning new contracts and investing in machinery have been integral to its success, with Emma’s partner Peter joining this year to assist with Lydwood’s continued development.

“Today, our capabilities include our design expertise – helping our customers to develop wooden products to be as technically sound as possible while accounting for the quirks of using timber and also being cost-effective to manufacture; routing with our “copy-head” routers, which enable us to machine up to six identical components at a time, or drill up to six holes at a time at custom hole centres; edge-banding with our automatic edge-bander; processing of solid timber from live-edged boards through to finished components; laminating capability with edge and face presses and a depth of expertise with adhesives for indoor and outdoor applications; and sanding and spraying,” Emma tells us.

“We are, therefore, a broad church, from making simple components such as unseen furniture panels and plywood packaging for industry, to complex laminated oak products for external

use and children’s furniture in plywood. Bespoke point-of-sale display stands in edge-banded chipboard have also become a significant part of our business – we have applied more than 5 miles of edge banding tape in the last three months!

“We are seeing a pushback from overseas production and also an increase in the appeal of wooden products, rather than plastic alternatives, to offer lower embedded carbon solutions.”

The primary factors in Lydwood’s longevity and success for the past six decades appear to be its ability to generate unique solutions to customers’ problems, utilising a depth and breadth of technical expertise and an impressive fleet of machinery and tools. Next, its ability to build trust with its customers through reliable quality and service delivery. And finally, a drive to invest in both its equipment and its people.

As ever, it is the people behind the brand that truly shape and drive its progress. Lydwood’s founder, Bob, certainly laid the foundations of the brand’s entrepreneurial spirit, as well as its strong relationship with its customers.

“Routing with our “copyhead” routers enables us to machine up to six identical components at a time, or drill up to six holes at a time at custom hole centres”

“Although I met my grandfather, I didn’t know him well as he died in 1998 when I was only 2,” Emma says. “However, I have heard many stories about him and greatly admire his bravery and entrepreneurship in leaving teaching to start Lydwood in 1964. There are many reminders of my grandfather’s time here, and one of his first employees still lives in the village. I hope that he would be pleased that I have taken on the business.

“It is a great privilege but also a lot of

responsibility. Both my grandfather and my parents made a success of Lydwood – serving customers and providing meaningful employment for dozens of people in the community.”

Under Emma’s leadership, the future is looking bright for Lydwood. Against the backdrop of an industry under increasing pressure from regulation, as well as transport, labour and energy costs, she has a strong strategy in place to drive the business forward.

“I’ve been fortunate to work with Goldman Sachs on their 10,000 Small Businesses Programme alongside the business schools at Oxford University and Aston University to develop a business growth plan,” she explains. “Despite our 300% growth in the last three years, our machine utilisation remains modest. Artful timber structure creates versatile addition to library

A striking refurbishment and extension of Lea Bridge Library in East London has seen the addition of an adaptable wood-lined community space and café, creating an inspiring and dynamic space in which to work, learn and socialise.

The 250m2 single-storey wing features a mass timber primary structure to improve access and connection to the public gardens, bringing a new lease of life to this Grade-II Listed Edwardian library. In order to accommodate the constraints of the historic setting and the protected mature trees, structural engineer, Andrew Trotman, has developed a lightweight ‘pavilion’ in both form and construction methodology.

The elongated footprint of the building extends from the original library building and runs along the perimeter wall of the green, planted area called Friendship Gardens. Tapered LVL beams support a length of floor-to-ceiling overhead glazing along the entire east elevation. By anchoring the structure and bulk of the building to one side, this continuous, open connection to the gardens is generated.

The refurbished main entrance and

foyer leads to a new café, before opening into the main community centre, where the dividable open plan layout contains interspersed ‘reading room’ spaces. With reuse at the heart of the project, salvaged wood from trees felled across London is used for all the internal joinery and furniture. A HOMAG homage, courtesy of a small business owner

Ian Woollard, owner of the family-run Woollards of Mildenhall, was recently interviewed regarding the purchase of HOMAG’s EDGETEQ S-300. He spoke with such eloquence not just about machinery but about HOMAG in general, that he more or less encapsulated what it means for a small business to partner up with the woodworking giant. With a special thanks to Ian, here’s the full story.

About the company

Woollards of Mildenhall is a small familyrun business that has been creating high-quality, bespoke kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom interiors for over 75 years. With a reputation for personal, dedicated service, Woollards has always prided itself on delivering exceptional craftsmanship.

Machine learning

When the time came to upgrade their machinery, the company’s first thought was HOMAG. “We needed a new machine to replace an old faithful,” Ian Woollard explains. “We had a HOMAG edge bander 17 years previously, which had worked pretty much flawlessly throughout that period of time.

“Right from the get-go, going back

“These machines open doors, but it’s the people behind them who show you the way through”

to when we purchased that original machine, it was always the HOMAG way to understand a business before they recommended the machines to be considered – machines which would lend themselves to current need as well as potential need for a growing business.

“When you start off with an edge bander, or any machine, when you haven’t had the benefit of it before, you don’t really appreciate the true value that machine brings to your business – until you’re using it. HOMAG, of course, know exactly what their machines are capable of, and they share this wisdom with you in a way that doesn’t feel forced. These machines open doors, but it’s the people behind them who show you the way through.

“Anyway, after 17 years of it, we were

no strangers to edge banding and all the benefits it brings to our small business. But nothing lasts forever, and the time came for us to invest in something new. Although, having said that, our old edge bander has since been recommissioned, and is now with another small business over in Norfolk. They’re thrilled with it, and for us, it’s great knowing its lifespan has been expanded with another family business. But I digress!”

Discovering the EDGETEQ S-300

“So, we were in the market for a new machine, and to be frank, there was never any question of looking anywhere other than HOMAG – we’d been so delighted with everything they had done for us up until that point.

“Our minimum requirement for the new edge bander was that it needed to do everything the old one did. We also suspected there may have been one or two advancements in edge banding technology since the early 2000s, so we were more than happy for HOMAG to educate us on those advancements and the benefits they could bring.”

For Woollards, the relationship with HOMAG has always been more than just about the machines. “As a HOMAG customer, you benefit from a gentle relationship of service. Not only do they keep your machines in good nick, they’re also a great source of information with regards to recent developments in the market.”

Guided by the expertise of HOMAG technicians, it wasn’t long before Woollards had their sights firmly set on the EDGETEQ S-300.

The technical edge

The EDGETEQ S-300 offered not only familiarity but also added benefits, thanks to the advancements in edge banding technology. “The most noticeable improvement with the EDGETEQ S-300 is a greater level of accuracy. The fine tuning of all the tooling, the output of the machine, the consistency… it’s next level. We were really impressed.

“We’re also really enjoying the ease of use and the adjustment. The software probably deserves an article of its own – honestly, it’s a delight. Remarkably intuitive. Altogether, in our experience, the system is flawless. From start to finish the edge banding process has become seamless.”

“We found in HOMAG a partner who we can readily identify with, who understands our needs, wants, and our direction of travel, who can even help with the steering of our business moving forward”

Installation and training

The installation process was equally as smooth. Ian recalls, “The guys who delivered and installed the machine were highly professional individuals. And very friendly – they didn’t mind us being specific and awkward! For instance, we asked them to reposition the machine three times, which they did without complaint. In fact, like us, they were determined to get the positioning just right, down to the millimetre.

“HOMAG then disseminated two tiers of training – an advanced level of training for myself and my eldest son David, covering the administrative detail of the machine which we didn’t want to burden the wider team with, and a more basic level which provided the necessary information for our operators to use the machine effectively.”

This programme was devised and coordinated by Carl Mullins from HOMAG. “Carl was exceptionally good at understanding our operation,” Ian reflects. “We were honestly amazed at the extent to which he tailored the training to our specific needs.”

Praise for the people

“Everyone from HOMAG, particularly those we dealt with directly, is worthy of praise – Punit Hirani, Charles Smith,

Marie Harrison, Kyle Smith, to name a few. But I want to give a special mention to Carl Mullins. He really embodies the professionalism of the HOMAG brand, working with a level of care and attention that has benefited our business beyond measure.

“No matter who you deal with at HOMAG, the calibre of the people is a great reflection of the calibre of their machinery. We’ve never encountered someone who hasn’t made time for us, who hasn’t been patient, who hasn’t either been able to answer a question or ask us to bear with them as they seek the solution that’s right for us.”

Final thoughts

Ian Woollard concludes, “We found in HOMAG a partner who we can readily identify with, who understands our needs, wants, and our direction of travel, who can even help with the steering of our business moving forward. For us, HOMAG was, is, and always will be the staple choice.”

Extractly system cleans air (quietly) at Staverton

Leading dust and fume extraction specialist, Extractly Limited, has recently completed the installation and commissioning of a new dust extraction and filtration plant for a major UK furniture manufacturer based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

Originating from the village of Staverton, in South Devon, and with almost a century of history behind it, the Staverton brand has become synonymous with highquality, contemporary office furniture. In the late 1920s, a team of craftsmen, including joiners and cabinet makers, was recruited to undertake works on the Dartington Hall estate and, in 1931, Staverton Builders Ltd was incorporated. Over the decades, the business has ridden the storms of change but, throughout its various phases and guises, has continued to be design-led and, today, Staverton (UK) Ltd enjoys an enviable reputation as a responsible and reliable, award-winning British manufacturer.

Whilst Staverton’s showroom and sales team are based in the heart of London’s creative Clerkenwell district, its design, manufacturing and admin functions are accommodated in a strategically-located 38,000 sq. ft. facility, alongside the M18 motorway, on the outskirts of Rotherham. In the busy workshop, responsibility for supervising and managing machining operations is the duty of Production

33,000 m3/hr capacity

to

“The new extraction works really well – the new filter unit has made a significant difference to the efficiency of our waste collection, and Extractly managed to complete the whole installation with minimal machine

Manager Mark Powell. “When it comes to dust-producing machines, we’ve got some big hitters here,” says Mark, who’s been with Staverton for just a quarter of a century. “There are three high-speed CNC machining centres requiring around 15,000m3 of extraction an hour between them, plus a couple of big saws and an edgebander that together need about 10,000m3. On top of that, we have a snip saw, spindle moulders and BHX drilling centres; all of which can easily add another 5,000m3 an hour if they’re all being used at the same time.”

Staverton’s previous main fan and filter unit were both nearing the end of their

downtime”

service life, and, although the extraction system had been upgraded back in 2015 to take advantage of Ecogate® ‘ondemand’ energy-saving technology, the company’s additional investments over the years in newer, high-speed machinery meant that the system was now operating close to its maximum capacity. Extractly Ltd is also the master UK distributor and installer for Ecogate® in the UK and, as a result of a timely customer relationship interaction with Staverton, sales director, Jake Oldfield, was invited to visit the Rotherham factory to survey the site and assess Staverton’s current extraction requirements.

15kW transport fan blows waste into storage container
ATEX filter unit with main fan fitted
‘clean side’ of the filter unit for maximum efficiency. Noise is attenuated by the silencer fitted above the fan

As Jake explains: “Since Staverton already had Ecogate® technology installed across the factory, it was evident from recorded system data that the old filter unit and fan were being stretched to the limit and now clearly lacked the power required to efficiently extract dust and wood waste from all the machinery being used.” With the old fan and filter being rather long in the tooth, the only satisfactory solution was to install a modern, efficient replacement filter unit, with greater capacity, together with a more powerful main fan.

“Extractly put together a compelling proposal”, added Mark Powell. “We previously had a 37kW fan, running flat out, but Jake recommended replacing this with a 55kW fan which would easily cope with today’s requirements, but also give us plenty of leeway for future expansion. Compared with our previous fan, this is quite a step up in power but, with Ecogate® already installed, it means the fan only consumes the energy needed to extract from machines that are operating at any point in time.”

For dust collection and filtration, Extractly installed a new ATEX filter unit with sufficient capacity to filter 33,000m3 of dust-laden air every hour. “To achieve maximum extraction efficiency from the new system, we’ve installed the fan on the ‘clean’ side of the filter unit,” says Jake Oldfield, “and, since dust and wood waste doesn’t pass through the fan, a

more efficient impeller design can be used. As a result, the fan consumes less electricity, and ongoing maintenance is minimised due to the inevitable reduction in wear and tear.” Dust and woodwaste is removed from the airflow as it’s drawn through an array of tubular filter bags, which in turn are cleaned by three 1.5kW regeneration fans. Collected waste is then removed, pressure-free, from the filter unit by a rotary valve before being blown by a 15kW ATEX transport fan into an adjacent storage container.

Of benefit to personnel working in the Staverton factory, as well as those in neighbouring businesses, the silencer Extractly fitted above the main fan is

very effective in keeping noise to a minimum. In addition, and to comply with ATEX regulations, Extractly installed an explosion isolation valve into the main ductwork, close to the filter unit. “We always recommend the inclusion of a non-return valve”, Jake Oldfield explains. “In the unlikely event of an explosion occurring in the filter unit, the valve prevents a pressure wave and flames travelling through the ductwork and into the factory.”

In conclusion, Mark Powell confirmed: “The new extraction works really well –the new filter unit has made a significant difference to the efficiency of our waste collection, and Extractly managed to complete the whole installation with minimal machine downtime.”

Titus, a worldwide leader in furniture hardware, has led the way in drawer innovation with its Tekform range of double wall drawers. These innovative systems are easy to install and feature integrated soft-close mechanisms, ensuring dependable, long-lasting performance.

The newest addition to the Tekform family, the Slimline+ drawer, represents a significant advancement in drawer technology. This second-generation double wall drawer system features slim sides that increase interior drawer space, resonating with consumers who prioritise storage efficiency in their homes.

“The newest addition to the Tekform family, the Slimline+ drawer, represents a significant advancement in drawer technology”

One of the standout features of the Tekform Slimline+ is its enhanced adjustment mechanism. This system offers height, side, and tilt adjustment with convenient access, allowing for precise drawer alignment. This flexibility is vital for achieving a flawless finish in kitchen and bathroom installations, as even minor misalignments can compromise the overall look.

The Slimline+ also introduces an innovative front panel engagement mechanism. This upgraded clipping system allows for an intuitive and secure front panel connection, making attachment and detachment straightforward and dependable. This feature is particularly beneficial for manufacturers and installers, as it streamlines the assembly process and ensures a firm hold regardless of the size or weight of the drawer front.

Titus has incorporated its latest damper technology with Adaptive Response Technology (ART) into the Tekform Slimline+. This innovative damping system adapts to various closing speeds, providing a consistent and gentle closing

experience every time. The precise tuning of the damping and spring forces delivers a comfortable opening feel without sacrificing the preferred soft closing action, resulting in quiet operation with a soft landing and minimal rebound upon closing.

In response to the growing trend of handleless cabinet designs, Titus has developed the Tekform Slimline Tacto. This system utilises a touch opening mechanism for handleless drawer fronts, making it an ideal choice for modern kitchens, bathrooms, wardrobes and living rooms. The Tacto system features an activator built into the drawer runner, while

all other components remain the same as the standard Slimline version. This design choice simplifies installation and maintains consistency in drilling and fixing positions.

A standout feature of the Tacto system is its commitment to Titus’ “One-for-All” principle. This allows one item to deliver push-open functionality across various drawer sizes, significantly simplifying stock management and on-site logistics for both manufacturers and installers.

The Tacto mechanism features a narrow 1.5mm operating gap, which ensures that the fronts align evenly and enables easy opening and closing. This level of precision is essential for attaining the sleek, uniform look that is much desired in modern cabinet design.

Titus has also paid close attention to the user experience with these drawer systems. The spring force in the Tacto mechanism is carefully tuned with the damping force of the drawer rail to provide the best opening and closing experience. The Titus damper inside ensures reliable damping at any closing speed, a feature that contributes to the overall quality feel of the furniture.

For those seeking a more traditional look, the original Tekform drawer continues to be an excellent option. It offers quick and intuitive assembly, thanks to the EasyFix locking system of the front panel connector with manual insertion. The rigid drawer and rail design ensures drawer stability in the open position, which is essential for user satisfaction.

Both the Tekform Slimline and original Tekform drawers are available in a range of heights and colours, with options for glass sides and inner drawer fronts. This versatility allows manufacturers to cater to various design preferences and functional requirements.

Titus’ Tekform family of drawer systems represents a significant advancement in cabinet functionality and design. By focusing on ease of installation, smooth operation, and aesthetic flexibility, Titus has created drawer solutions that meet the needs of manufacturers, installers, and end-users alike. Efficiency – the universal heart of the matter for installers

For today’s busy installers and manufacturers, saving time and costs on-site is essential to running a successful business. Any tool that can achieve both, while also assuring precision and robustness in production, ticks too many boxes to be ignored.

Described as ‘the ideal problem solver on any project’, the UC 16/64, a new universal connector from Häfele, is designed to transform the way installers and manufacturers operate.

Manufactured at Häfele’s production facility in Berlin, the UC 16/64 is a polycarbonate connection device which mixes snap-in studs and clips with a latching nose and screw holes to achieve multiple applications with just one device.

Suitable for corner, surface and upright connections, as well as offset, angled and double joints, the UC 16/64 also acts as an assembly aid, cable guide, spacer and floor guide.

“The UC 16/64 is the device every installer has been waiting for,” says Justin Crofts, Category Manager - Furniture Construction at Häfele UK. “Its design ensures extremely durable connections across countless applications, minimising the number of different devices that need to be used in projects.

“By standardising multiple installation techniques, it helps get jobs done faster, more efficiently and is a true problem solver in just one compact piece of kit”

“By standardising multiple installation techniques, it helps get jobs done faster, more efficiently and is a true problem solver in just one compact piece of kit.”

The UC 16/64 was launched for the first time earlier this year at the InstallerSHOW and received a resounding response from attendees.

“Feedback from those who saw our demonstrations of the UC 16/64 was that it would make the process of buying parts for projects much easier – because this one piece of equipment can take the place of multiple fittings – and that it’ll make a huge impact on site too, which is exactly what we wanted to achieve when designing the connector,” adds Justin.

“Our priority is to constantly explore the challenges our customers are facing and find solutions to them. The UC 16/64 is an example of the innovation that runs throughout Häfele, and we look forward to seeing how it goes on to transform the lives of installers and manufacturers the world over.”

To ensure the DEXOS can work for long periods without a break, it has automatic filter cleaning capabilities, which ensure consistent suction from the first use to the last. In addition, there is an integrated airflow sensor that provides users with real-time feedback on its performance via the MyMirka app, so they are aware of any deviations from the optimal flow rates of the tool.

The extractor’s ergonomic design makes it easy to handle and manoeuvre around job sites and its built-in storage space accommodates the 4m hose. It is also compatible with the Mirka case and toolbox as well as existing Mirka hoses. This enables users to have everything they require in one place. In addition, it has an easy-to-clean construction that ensures hassle-free maintenance as and when required.

One of the DEXOS’ innovative features is the Bluetooth-enabled remote control (sold

separately) that is strapped around the dust hose and senses tool vibrations to start the extractor and offers the user two operating modes: auto sense and manual. The remote control has a Bluetooth range of up to 20m, and it eliminates the need for a pneumatic box.

The extractor’s Bluetooth connectivity also enables it to connect to the MyMirka app. Via the app, the user will be able to access numerous insights from air flow indication to a running time display and a hot PCB alarm. These insights provide the user with comprehensive monitoring of the tool, so it can perform at optimal level and users are aware of any issues.

Kundig’s Autumn Open House showcases expertise

The surface finish is the first impression set by anyone looking at fine pieces of furniture or, in fact, any wood-based product. This often denotes the level of expertise, care and quality of the product during the manufacturing process.

When creating either a high gloss or semi-gloss finish, the surface needs to be truly flat to allow a mirrored reflection, free from distortion. Also, as veneer slicing technology has advanced, veneer thickness has become less and less, emphasising the importance of both controlled and accurate sanding to protect vulnerable corners and edges. These are areas in which Kundig excels.

The Autumn Open House allowed Kundig to showcase the advantages of its products, from methods of construction to ensure long-term accuracy and longevity, through to choice and application of different sanding aggregates. Several discussions took place covering various topics, including the advantages of individual sanding heads compared to combi units, calibration rollers with steel vs hard rubber coated, fixed sanding beds compared to moving beds and, of course, the advantages of the patented Kundig Oblique sanding versus traditional and

‘super finishing’ heads, which use an inner chevron belt.

Another area which is often both overlooked and misunderstood when it comes to sanding is the correct choice of abrasive for the application. Many machinery manufacturers talk about the capability of a machine with large diameter rollers and big motor HP, etc. However, all sanding machines are limited to the capability of the abrasive.

“The Autumn Open House allowed Kundig to showcase the advantages of its products, from methods of construction to ensure long-term accuracy and longevity, through to choice and application of different sanding aggregates”

If a sanding belt is overloaded, then it will become consumed very quickly, resulting in high running costs. Kundig manufactures its own abrasives to support its own machinery and is able to offer informed advice on all aspects of sanding.

The all-new Kundig Master was demonstrated sanding both solid wood and veneered panels. This latest version now includes a 200mm working height and an ‘Enormatic’ automatic setting device, which makes the sanding of even the largest panels an easy process, as there is no need for the operator to return to the control panel once this function is activated.

The Kundig Perfect was also shown sanding solid wood, veneer and de nibbing sprayed surfaces. The machine on display was also fitted with a structure brush complete with the new ‘Twinex’ brush to give a textured surface by leaving the hard grain raised.

Also displayed was the complete lineup of Kundig edge sanding machines, from the Uniq with motorised tilting of the abrasive and programmable oscillation to the Uniq-S, complete with an integrated feed system. HOMAG celebrates 25 years of pioneering window production

HOMAG is marking a significant milestone: 25 years of pioneering window production solutions. Since the introduction of its first CNC technology in the late 1990s, HOMAG has consistently led the way in developing automated solutions for window manufacturing. What started as a response to the need for handling diverse window construction without manual tool changes has evolved into a robust line of machines that have transformed the industry.

A legacy of innovation

Since 1999, HOMAG has been at the forefront of creating state-of-the-art CNC window production technology. The journey began with the introduction of the BOF 311/40/PM, the company’s first machine designed with a specific clamping system for window scantlings, delivering unprecedented performance and laying the groundwork for further innovation.

Key developments included the Flex5 unit in 2004 for versatile sawing, routing, and drilling at any angle, and the chain changer for quick tool changes. In 2008, HOMAG launched the powerProfiler BOF 700, an automatic machining centre featuring the innovative MA table for automatic reclamping.

The powerProfiler 2 was unveiled in 2011, boasting a new design for improved efficiency in automated window production. In 2014, HOMAG introduced the next generation of powerProfilers with extended functions, including 3D clamping technology and the Tooltower tool storage system for faster changeover times.

Two decades of development came to a head in 2018 with a significant design change and the rebranding of the powerProfiler series to the CENTATEQ S-800/900 – a stark indication that HOMAG, and by extension the window manufacturing industry as a whole, had entered a new era.

CENTATEQ S-900

The latest luxuries

The culmination of HOMAG’s 25-year legacy can be seen in its latest CENTATEQ series, which represents the pinnacle of window production technology. Each machine in the series – CENTATEQ P-310, CENTATEQ P-510, and CENTATEQ S-800/S-900 – has been designed to meet the demands of modern manufacturers, combining sophisticated technology with user-friendly operation.

The CENTATEQ P-310 is celebrated for its versatile performance in CNC processing. Its compact design and customisable configuration with a great choice of clamps and fixtures makes it ideal for window/joinery production.

The machine’s advanced area scanner technology (safeScan) ensures safe and efficient operation without compromising productivity.

“We were asked the other day what was the key benefit of the new HOMAG CENTATEQ P-310 to our business, and I blurted out: ‘You can make money using it!’”, praises Ryan Woodward, Director at French & Westcott, who was recently interviewed regarding his company’s investment in the P-310. “And ultimately, that’s what it’s all about. We now process almost every component of a window or door on the CNC because it is so much quicker and more accurate. It is a real game-changer, without a shadow of a doubt.”

Similarly, the CENTATEQ P-510 takes production capabilities to the next level, offering a complete system for the most

“What started as a response to the need for handling diverse window construction without manual tool changes has evolved into a robust line of machines that have transformed the industry”

demanding production requirements.

With scalable performance and a moving gantry designed for high-precision work, this machine is ideal for manufacturing stairs, furniture, doors and, of course, windows. Its innovative design allows for complex tasks to be handled efficiently, meeting diverse customer needs with exceptional accuracy.

Last but certainly not least, the CENTATEQ S-800/S-900 models, which stand out as the ultimate solutions for automated window production. Designed for both entry-level applications and high-capacity industrial operations, these machines offer automated loading and clamping, multi head four- & fiveaxis technology and independent part processing capabilities. The series supports continuous, multi-shift operation, significantly increasing throughput.

“The results we’ve achieved with this new machine have been outstanding,” shares Dion Panting, Managing Director at Mumford & Wood. “We even managed

to process 270 components in one ninehour shift, which is unheard of in complex window manufacturing. Every part comes off correct and finished to the premium quality standards we demand.”

Looking to the future

Even as HOMAG celebrates this significant milestone, the company remains focused on the ever-evolving demands of window manufacturing and finding new ways to give its customers a razor-sharp, crystal-clear edge.

There’s no telling what the next 25 years will hold for HOMAG. But given its history of innovation, its active adoption of the latest technologies, and its commitment to evolve alongside the needs of its customers, it’s safe to assume there’s plenty more where that came from.

The company understands that purchasing a CNC is one of the biggest investments most businesses will make, so it takes time and care to ensure that the machines, software and overall package are right for the customers’ needs and production.

The benefits of investing in CNC technology

Adding a first CNC is always a big decision. It’s a big investment, both in time and money, plus the initial learning curve of going from traditional methods to programming and machining. However, the benefits of being able to repeat programs at a moment’s notice, produce components in a fraction of the time, and optimise programs to machine multiple components in one machining cycle, ultimately save time and money.

To provide an example of production differences: to produce a typical staircase using traditional methods could take a single joiner up to a week, including measuring and drawing. With the help of specialist stair software, even a complex winder staircase can be drawn, machined and assembled in less than a day.

We also offer full service back-up on all our machines with many customers taking out service plans on the machines

“Our engineers have a very thorough knowledge on CNC machines which we brought to our Technos machines to develop them into one of the best-selling machines in the UK”

to keeping them in optimum working order.

“Our engineers have a very thorough knowledge on CNC machines which we brought to our Technos machines to develop them into one of the best-selling machines in the UK.

The benefits of investing in CNC technology such as the Technos Series from VWM is fairly clear, but worth repeating. The key advantages CNC holds over traditional machines is they are fully-automated giving constant accuracy and a reliability of production output, in a word, consistency. The machining time is accurate and via the software provides clear timing scenarios allowing manufacturers to accurately quote jobs – and of course, CNC don’t require tea breaks or call in sick!

“The performance expected from any of our CNC range is very high,” says Jason, “as they are all very high accuracy machines proven by the fact that we supply these into aerospace industry which have very high tolerances on all their products, and they also demand repeatability on these as well.

“Other elements to look at when purchasing a CNC should be the software … our machines are geared to work with any software on the market, this is evidenced by the fact that we numerous machines in the field working successfully

with many different software brands.

“Another key element should be the construction and fabrication of the machinery itself – a scenario where our Technos range wins hands down! We have well over 170 successful installs since 2003 out in the field in the UK.

“To evidence this, a couple of customers that spring to mind, the first being a pallet manufacturer who developed a flat-pack case for exporting goods. He was manufacturing this the old way with overhead pin routers and jigs and this was a very time-consuming job, now on the CNC, what took them four hours to cut and make is completed in 20 minutes.

The other, is a customer of ours who make refrigerated vehicles, they first came to us as they were using hand saws to cut very large panels of up to 10m long by 3m wide! Over the last six years we have now supplied them with seven CNC machines, two of which have beds of 14 x 3m and this output has helped make them into one of Europe’s biggest refrigerated vehicle manufacturers.”

AES holds successful Autumn Open House

The AES Group Machinery UK Autumn Open House – held between 26-29th September – was the third UK event this year to showcase the broad range of CNC machinery available to the industrial-based customer.

Previous shows included the March Open House to officially launch the new UKbased AES Showroom and support centre, followed by the Materials and Finishes show held at Birmingham NEC in May.

The Autumn Open House saw new and existing customers visit to see the latest technology in both CNC machinery and software available from Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence. One of the ‘star’ attractions was the AES Vega fiveaxis CNC machine showing simultaneous, multi-axis movements whilst performing several milling, engraving, shaping and cutting operations.

Along with the AES Vega five-axis CNC, there was a ‘fire door’ spec AES Vega Ultra Evo showing the advantages of the double-sided horizontal router head and how having three active router tools in the machine increases productivity.

Another area which proved of interest

and quite unique was the demonstration of cutting typical shapes, such as point-ofsale curved tabletops on the AES Extreme Ultra, followed by edging on the SNX contour edge banding machine. These two machines can be supplied for around half the cost of the ‘all in one’ combined CNC/edge bander, whilst offering greater flexibility and productivity.

The AES Beta beamsaw was also shown working using optimised cutting patterns imported from CAD generated by Cabinet Design Software. The machine on display was complete with a barcode printer, which was then scanned by the AES CNC drilling machines, calling up the relevant program for face drilling, end drilling, grooving and pocketing operations.

The AES Flexa Pro has been AES’ bestselling CNC nesting machine and was kept busy showing typical cabinet parts using Rafix as the construction method, with the ‘next level’ AES Super Nova showing the production of various styles of kitchen doors. The Super Nova comes complete with a gantry cover with LED status light bars, rotary tool changer and face drilling.

“One of the ‘star’ attractions was the AES Vega fiveaxis CNC machine showing simultaneous, multi-axis movements whilst performing several milling, engraving, shaping and cutting operations”

For more automation, the AES Extreme Ultra nesting cell was shown in action. In one cycle, the machine can automatically align and label a board, then load, nest/ face drill/groove/shape etc, before being automatically pushed onto an outfeed conveyor whilst the spoil board is also cleaned in the same process. This was demonstrated using designs from Cabinet Vision, which were sent directly to the machine.

AES Group would like to thank all who took the time to visit, as well as Barista Sister for the refreshments and Fratelli’s for the on-site catering.

From little acorns, great oaks grow

Established for over 30 years, ECC Timber Products is a €100m+ turnover business with over 150 staff employed based in County Galway, Ireland. With exponential growth over recent years, one thing has always been a constant: its unwavering belief in its saw blade sharpening technology from Vollmer UK.

As the business has grown, its portfolio has evolved to encompass products for construction, fencing and landscaping, pallet and packaging, motorway fencing, acoustic panel products and much more. The environmentally conscious manufacturer processes more than 600,000 tons of timber every year, utilising its by-products from the wood milling facility to supply products such as bark, wood chip, sawdust and dry shavings to the horticulture, panel manufacturing, biomass and animal bedding sectors.

Soon after its inception, the company invested heavily in its saw-sharpening facility. During those early days, ECC purchased a CAS bandsaw sharpening machine, an EMS twin-head side grinder, a first-generation bandsaw, Stellite tipping machine and a VWM bandsaw and rolling bench, all from Vollmer. The circular section of the saw shop was also augmented with the purchase of a Vollmer CHC22H TCT grinder and an FS2A side grinder.

This investment was copper fastened over the following years with additions and updates, including CA200 profile grinders, an Alligator Stellite tipping machine, and more recently, an RC100 automatic levelling and tensioning machine – all from Vollmer. Many of these Vollmer machines are still in active service today – demonstrating the longevity and quality of the brand.

As part of a strategic plan, ECC is planning the next phase of their sawmill upgrade, and as an initial part of this, the saw shop that services and maintains circular saws and band saw blades needed to be moved from its previous location.

As ECC Timber Products maintenance manager, Mr Pat Mullarkey, says: “We needed to move the saw shop on-site, and we saw this as an opportunity to invest in a brand-new purpose-built facility encompassing the latest technology to future-proof our business. We also saw this as an opportunity to improve quality and create efficiencies.

“Many of our previous Vollmer machines were 25 years old and had more than served their time. Despite their age, the Vollmer machines still ran well, and we refurbished and re-purposed some of them. The all-new purpose-built facility allowed us to explore opportunities and invest in the next generation of technology. After the proven performance and longevity of the Vollmer brand here at ECC, we had no intention of looking anywhere else.”

Following a consultation with the new MD of Vollmer UK, Martyn Cross, ECC took delivery of a Vollmer CHF840 side grinding machine. This was accompanied by a fully automated CS860 for universal tooth face and top grinding of TCT saw blades with an ND320 robot loading automation system. ECC placed the order in November 2023. Landing in March 2024, the new arrivals have significantly benefitted ECC. Pat continues: “We picked these two

machines as they perfectly matched our processes and desired results. Having seen these machines operating in similar environments before purchasing, it gave us 100% confidence in what we were buying.

“We only service saws for our own site, and the previous machines perfectly served our limited requirements in the past. However, we have evolved over the years, and along with many other changes, we currently have a USNR Versagang that takes a box of 25 guided 28in saws per shift. In addition, we have four multi-head cross-cut lines, two board edgers, an 18-saw trimmer and a Ledinek high-speed planer with a splitting module.

“These machines all run two shifts daily, and many workstations require daily saw blade changes. This means we go through a lot of saw blades. This placed significant demands on our saw shop, the old Vollmer machines and our ability to service the fast-paced production department with the quality required. The new machines have changed all that.”

Cutting through challenges

After purchasing new circular saw blades, the self-sufficient saw shop undertakes servicing, maintenance and re-tipping of its blades in-house, performing the duties while achieving the throughput and quality any saw shop would be proud of. With up to 14,000m3 of timber processed weekly, saw blade performance and efficiency are critical. Here, the new Vollmer CHF840 and CS860 have demonstrated their value. Not only did the arrival of automated

saw processing generate staff efficiencies, but it drastically improved productivity. By removing the time required for manual loading/unloading, the CS860 maximises processing uptime. Additionally, the latest CNC control and drive technology, optimised kinematics, in-process measurement and calibration further reduce saw blade cycle times by more than 30%.

Another key benefit of the new Vollmer arrivals is the precision and quality of the blades sharpened on the CS860 and CHF840. Alluding to this, Pat adds: “The in-process monitoring and calibration is improving the precision of our blades far beyond anything achievable on our previous machines.

Furthermore, the new Vollmer machines have introduced an oil cooling system instead of a water-soluble coolant. Our tip surface and edge finishes are much better than those on our previous machines. Improved precision and surface finishes positively affect our saw blades’ productivity and cut quality. The result in the sawmill is greater productivity and longevity from our saw blades with far superior edge finishes and precision levels on our sawn products.”

Concluding on the investment in the two new Vollmer machines, Pat says: “The automated CS860 and the CHF840 have made a massive impact on everything from labour, manufacturing efficiency and productivity in the saw shop to precision, quality and improved saw service life in the sawmill. We have had the machines

for a few months, and we still haven’t fully challenged or utilised the benefits of Vollmer’s latest CNC technology. We have more to learn, but regardless of this, the benefits of the new machines have been immeasurable.”

Unilin achieves C2C certification of its chipboard and MFC

In July, Unilin’s entire range of raw- and melamine-faced particleboard received full Cradle to Cradle Certified® Bronze v4.0 certification, claiming a first in this sector.

As a global operator, Unilin says it is acutely aware of its environmental impact – and that’s why it focuses on developing resource-sensitive solutions, from design through to implementation and beyond. Hence, the company is maximising the use of renewable and recycled materials throughout its manufacturing processes.

To this end, it is employing the Cradle to Cradle methodology and is ultimately aiming for C2C certifications for several of its products.

What is C2C Certified?

Cradle to Cradle Certified is a certification awarded to safer, more sustainable products, manufactured in accordance with circular economy principles, using six criteria: environmental policy, material health, product circularity, air quality and climate protection, water and soil management, and social justice.

With this a stragey objective, Charlotte Van Vlierberghe, Brand Manager at Unilin Panels, underlines the company’s position: “The natural progression for our One Home strategy is for Unilin to achieve C2C certification across the board. With C2C Certified, we are focusing on the durability of our products. Our previous certification

“Going through the certification process has proved to be more important than the attainment of the certificates, as it enabled us to implement the One Home sustainability strategy at all levels of our organisation”

already complied with all Bronze standard Material Health specifications, but this latest development takes things to the next level. In fact, our particleboard products now also meet the stringent requirements of the following areas:

• Product Circularity: designing materials to be reused or recycled with no loss of quality (e.g. the wood in our particleboard is 95% recycled).

• Clean Air & Climate Protection: promoting renewable energies and reducing harmful emissions (for example we are maximising our renewables thanks to our factories’ own biomass generators).

• Responsible Water & Soil Management: ensuring that the water supply is kept

Manufacturer and supplier of ABS / PVC & Veneer Edgebanding material

We have an extensive range with over 3000 decors matching all main board suppliers as well as door manufacturers and paint colours.

Slitting Edgeband to any size is available on site as well as pre-glueing to order.

We carry both 1mm and 2mm off the shelf and can deliver the next day across the UK and Ireland.

Our website hosts its own decor finder which is a fantastic tool that lets you find an edge to board match within seconds.

We offer a wide range of veneer edging from local and foreign tree species, as well as fine-line veneers of various thicknesses and widths – fleece-backed, sanded and upon request, brushed and lacquered. We offer only the highest quality veneer supplied in rolls.

CAMCO Edging can meet requirements of large and small manufacturers

clean and soil kept healthy (as exemplified by our state-of-the-art waste water purification system at the Wielsbeke site).

• Social Responsibility: ensuring that we have a positive social impact and fair working conditions (e.g. our Zero Harm safety programme in all our factories).”

Unilin Panels’ Sustainability Manager Cristian Delaere notes: “Sustainability is a unique asset, and in the very near future, will be a vital matter, hence the importance of this certification process. Once certification has been obtained, the company has between three- to six years to take things to the next level. This timeframe ensures continuous improvement of both process and products, otherwise certification will be rendered null and void. Our purchasing, R&D, HSE and HR teams, amongst others, will be doing their utmost to ensure we upgrade our certifications.

“Sharing this info allowed us to analyse how we as Unilin can take further steps to make our products even more sustainable”

“Going through the certification process has proved to be more important than the attainment of the certificates, as it enabled us to implement the One Home sustainability strategy at all levels of our organisation. This has tested all aspects of our products and our manufacturing processes. This process has united all participants, both internal and external, around the common theme of sustainability.

“A thorough analysis of our products was only possible through close cooperation with our suppliers. Together with our purchasing department, our suppliers were given context about our sustainability process and asked to provide extensive info on the raw materials supplied to us. Sharing this info allowed us to analyse how we as Unilin can take further steps to make our products even more sustainable.

“The great thing is that by providing Unilin with the information, suppliers themselves also gain insights into their product and some of them have meanwhile joined the C2C Certified story themselves. Unilin thus indirectly initiates sustainability awareness throughout the value chain.

This virtuous circle has now resulted in all of our products being awarded C2C Bronze v4.0 certification. The process of working towards C2C Certified certification has been a rewarding one, due to the complexity of our products, the range of materials and the manufacturing processes involved. It also constitutes a positive contribution to a circular and responsible economy.”

New nesting options on mobidelli x range

Two new solutions have been unveiled by SCM to further enhance and integrate its popular morbidelli x range. By applying high speed and maximum flexibility to nesting machining, the company aims to meet a market demand that is increasingly focused on batch one production.

In so doing, SCM once again demonstrates its ability to transfer high performance onto entry level solutions, delivering a number of advantages which differentiate its nesting range at highly competitive prices. Every detail has been designed with a view to making all the necessary features accessible from an efficiency, machining quality and predictive maintenance point of view. With regards to software, it not only has the new Maestro Lab intuitive and dynamic CAD/CAM design system for programming both from the office and machine, but the morbidelli x50 and x100 also have a state-of-the-art SCM Smart cut algorithm.

Elimination of both unproductive times and waste, alongside a reduction in energy consumption and material scraps, are the main advantages of this optimiser which proves ideal for the nesting cut of even the smallest pieces.

SCM Smart cut applies sequences

and cutting technologies which, without affecting either the speed or arrangement of the pieces in the program, improve the finishing quality and reduce cycle times.

Highlighted for both machining centres, there is also the SMS – Spoilboard Management System software, an advanced solution which makes it easier for the operator to manage the spoil panel signalling pro-actively.

Innovations of the mechanical characteristics

One example is the worktable with High Grip Vacuum technology on the morbidelli x50. Practical and sturdy, it is “the only one of its kind to guarantee a strong grip on the piece thanks to a patented deflector which distributes the vacuum across the whole surface, thus maximising the grip even in the case of panels that are smaller than the machine’s overall area”.

Another advantage of the morbidelli x50 is its flexibility courtesy of the XS Device, which makes it easier for the operator to refer and machine all the pieces directly on the spoil panel, even the smallest ones. Also worth noting is the SAFE – Safe Advanced Fixed Equipment protection system, which delivers maximum operator safety at all times. This occurs due to

a perimeter photocell system which provides free access to all four sides to machine right across the board.

The advantages of the morbidelli x50 are rounded off with the top performances of the drilling units, with 8000rpm RO.AX technology, and boring units capable of machining in nesting up to 40m per minute.

The innovation at the heart of SCM’s new machining centres for nesting is further amplified with the morbidelli x100. The model is available in different versions, from stand-alone machine to integrated cell with automatic flexstore magazine, right up to the push- and mat-versions, respectively fitted with automatic pusher and motorised unloading belt to simplify and speed up the exit of the pieces in complete safety and, in this latter case, even without manual interventions. Another distinctive feature is the maximum grip on the piece guaranteed by Smart vacuum, the system which concentrates the vacuum only in the parts still to be machined, thus avoiding dispersion in the areas already nested.

An innovation that has been added to an already high-performing worktable with PHE– Phenolic High Efficiency technology especially designed for use with the spoil panel.

Keep your workshop running – the importance of regular machine maintenance

In woodworking, keeping your machines in optimal condition is essential to maintaining smooth production. Like any machinery, woodworking equipment requires regular check-ups to prevent unexpected breakdowns.

Unfortunately, many workshops only think about maintenance when something has already gone wrong, but by then, the damage is often done.

Advanced Machinery Services (AMS) strongly recommends implementing an annual maintenance plan for all woodworking machinery. This not only extends the lifespan of your machines but also prevents costly production disruptions that can happen when equipment fails at the worst possible moment.

Real stories of production disruptions due to the absence of maintenance

Consider a joinery workshop in London. Their rip saw unexpectedly stopped midproduction, causing a complete pause in their operations.

AMS’ engineer, Lukasz, discovered that worn bearings and an unbalanced blade –issues that could have been identified with routine servicing – were responsible for the breakdown. If a simple maintenance check had been completed, this delay could have been avoided.

“Advanced Machinery Services (AMS) strongly recommends implementing an annual maintenance plan for all woodworking machinery”

Recently, a furniture manufacturing company in Leicestershire faced a significant challenge when their panel saw broke down unexpectedly, again due to the absence of regular maintenance. This breakdown forced them to pause production, impacting their project deadlines and customer commitments. AMS was fortunate to have engineers in the East Midlands who responded quickly, allowing the company to provide the replacement part from its available stock, and ensure the panel saw was only down for 24 hours. However, this situation could have been far worse.

Similarly, a sawmill company in Newcastle faced a major breakdown of their planer moulder, a vital machine in their production line. Without a maintenance plan in place, they were forced to suspend production for over a week while waiting for replacement parts. Regular servicing could have caught the damage, preventing the downtime.

A word from Paul on repairs and maintenance

“I’ve been an engineer for years, covering areas such as the South, Kent, and London. One of the most rewarding parts of my job is solving difficult problems, especially when a customer is struggling to keep their production line moving.

“Identifying the issue, fixing it, and getting their business back on track is a great feeling — though there’s some pressure involved!

“I also enjoy the maintenance side of things because it’s more relaxed. It gives me the chance to spot potential

problems before they happen and make sure everything runs smoothly. It’s less stressful for both me and the customer, knowing they won’t have any surprise breakdowns!”

Factory relocations and machine installations

AMS’ team doesn’t just keep your machines in top condition — it also specialises in relocating machinery from one workshop to another. Whether you purchase a machine from AMS or you’re moving locally or across the country, AMS manages the entire process with precision and care, ensuring your machines are dismantled, transported, and reinstalled safely.

Its engineers are based across the UK, with its main workshop located in Leicestershire, where machines are rebuilt and reconditioned by its expert team. Contact AMS for assistance with repairs, regular maintenance plans, machine rebuilding, relocation, or installations. 0844 844 9949

Can timber windows and doors bring more profit in 2025?

As 2025 approaches, timber windows and doors are experiencing a resurgence, offering significant profit potential for joinery companies.

Homeowners, builders, housebuilders, developers, and architects are increasingly choosing timber for its sustainability, durability, and aesthetic appeal. To help businesses capitalise on this trend, The Joinery Network has a proven track record of boosting profits for UK joinery companies through its fully certified timber window and door system and its manufacturing support programme.

JF Joinery, based in North Devon, was one of the first businesses to begin manufacturing Lignum. The integration of the Lignum tooling system from Leitz has streamlined the machining process, resulting in a significant increase in production volumes.

John Fanthorpe, JF Joinery’s managing director, explains how revolutionary the switch to Lignum has been: “Our cycle times have massively decreased since adopting the Lignum system. Today, we spend more time assembling and decorating our products than we do machining them — without any compromise in quality. In fact, the high-quality finish has reduced our need to sand or rework products, allowing us to move straight to assembly and decoration.”

Andy Ball, director at The Joinery Network, adds: “Over the last five years, The Joinery Network has developed Lignum, a fully certified timber window and door system that complies with building regulations. We currently have more than 50 members manufacturing the Lignum system in the UK, and we are adding more joinery companies every month.

“A key part of this success is the combination of the Lignum system with our comprehensive manufacturing support programme. In addition to onsite training for managers and operatives, our team provides business and marketing support to our joinery company members. We also connect them with our network of expert partners, giving them access to an invaluable knowledge base.

“This year, alongside our full range of timber windows and doors, we’ve introduced the GUTMANN-LIGNUM wood-aluminium suite, developed in collaboration with aluminium specialist GUTMANN, as well as a Lignum entrance door system, available either fully finished or in kit form.

“The Joinery Network has also launched its Lignum Accoya French doors, which

have achieved PAS24:2022 certification. We are leading the market with vacuumglazed windows and doors, offering sustainable, energy-efficient solutions.”

Andy adds: “We offer the widest range of window and door products to suit both traditional and modern projects. Combined with growing demand, we believe 2025 is the perfect year for joinery manufacturers to expand their timber window and door offerings. The Joinery Network provides the expertise, training, and product development they need to succeed.”

Let the machine do the maths

Length compensation, double mitre, saw blade thickness compensation –the RadioCompens system takes care of all this.

Otto Martin believes that double mitre cuts should be just as easy, fast and accurate as simple 90° cuts, and the RADIOCOMPENS SYSTEM from MARTIN makes sure of that. Once the angle of the parallelogram cross table has been set, the machine takes care of everything else. The angle is transmitted by radio to the control unit, where the length error is calculated and the compensation dimension is then transmitted by radio to the digital displays of the cross cut fence.

The cutting thickness of the saw blade used is also compensated for, so it doesn’t matter whether you are

working with a 2.8 or 5.4 mm saw blade, the cut will always be perfect.

If you need the dimension on the top of the material instead of the dimension at table level, simply enter this

information in the control unit and the corresponding corrected dimensions will be displayed.

Another feature is the so-called 4th parameter. This enables you to specify

the length dimensions of a workpiece in relation to its system. Simply enter the material width into the machine and you will receive the corresponding dimension. www.martin.info/en/

With multiple machine sizes, power specifications and accessory options, the wide range of VOTECS briquetting presses and shredders has the capacity to deliver efficient solutions… whatever your waste reduction needs.

“We’re saving the costs of two skips every month!”

The owner of a Rutland-based manufacturing company is delighted with the purchase of a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology, as it delivers everything promised.

I-Design Furniture creates innovative and robust educational accommodation furniture and other bespoke pieces for offices, reception areas and laboratories for independent schools, universities and other private clients.

The business manufactures in many materials, but uses a lot of plywood due to it being an eco-friendly, strong and durable wood that can be easily fabricated to create curved surfaces and other desired eye-catching shapes. I-Design’s workshop had no heating, so it was very cold in winter. Temporary heat sources tried to add some warmth to the factory on the coldest days, but these were often inefficient and expensive to use.

Managing Directors Ben Walsgrove and Adam Ross did some investigation into wood waste heaters after hearing that other wood-based manufacturing companies recommended investing in one. A quick search on the internet led to Wood Waste Technology, and a realisation that a wood waste heater could be the solution. Following more information and a site survey, Wood Waste Technology’s specialist engineers installed a WT10 wood waste heater in the factory last year. i-Design also purchased a summer heat

dump option along with the heater, to allow the company to burn its waste all year round and send the heat to atmosphere during the warmer months.

Ben Walsgrove says: “Once Wood Waste Technology’s engineers installed the heater the difference was obvious, as the workshop went from freezing cold to beautifully warm. We’re delighted with our purchase. We’re now saving around £750 each month on skip costs, and the burner also heats the workshop for free. Our team are more content now the workshop is warmer, so it’s good for morale as well as the bottom line. Some of our team now come to work in shorts, even in the winter! The wood waste heater does everything we were promised it would, and burns a large amount of our wood waste, including plywood. It more than fulfils our business requirements and has been a great investment that will pay back quickly.”

Kurt Cockroft, MD at Wood Waste Technology, says: “We’re delighted that I-Design is benefitting from the purchase of a wood waste heater. We’d suggest any business which is manufacturing using wood should investigate the options, as some companies can experience payback on the investment in less than one year!”

“The wood waste heater does everything we were promised it would, and burns a large amount of our wood waste, including plywood”

Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand-fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and is proud to claim that it “supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers”.

In addition, Wood Waste

Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precisionengineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology .com

This month’s article was written whilst he was researching timber frame housing in Japan, in October 2024. He looks at how, for many years, the Japanese have successfully built timber frame buildings that he claims not only make great homes but can also withstand earthquakes!

One of the fears with timber frame housing is longevity in use. Modern manufacturing methods and environmentally friendly treatment of the timber ensure this happens. My recent Japanese experience showed that the buildings had a long life even if not made using modern timber construction methods and using modern materials. Houses and other buildings, including shrines, still stand that were made in the 18th century and before. Indeed, a shrine made of timber is one of the few buildings to remain in Tokyo that survived the intense bombing of the Second World War.

The other major fear with timber frame houses is fire. However, there are fire retardant treatments available, and have been available in the UK for many years for treating roof trusses and other structural timber. Also, timber has a natural protection. When the outer surface becomes charred, this protects the timber within and retains structural strength.

During my research, I discovered modern methods (using timber) to construct safe, affordable housing. Many of these were in areas in Japan affected by heavy snow in winter, so good insulation, as well as structural strength, were needed to take the weight of the snow.

Timber frame housing looks like the only way to meet Government targets with regard to the number of houses needed in the UK and maintaining Carbon Neutrality.

With the use of timber frame houses, housing can be erected quickly, as well as being well insulated. They can be made in a quality-controlled environment using the latest in timber technology, including engineered sections. By embracing this new approach to housing (although others have used timber for centuries), the ambitious targets set by the new Government could possibly be met.

Japan is a high-technology country. As I moved around Japan, I was bombarded with the use of the latest new technology. In hotels, you access the Wi-Fi using a QR code, you can then control the lighting, the room temperature and entertainment in your room by using your “smartphone”. No article written in Japan, even on timber frame housing, can go by without reference to the Japanese WC! This

high-tech multifunction device sets new standards in personal hygiene. And yes, it can be controlled by your smartphone! It also takes up less room than conventional toilets and bidet combinations.

In the cities, the Japanese are still building concrete tower blocks, but in urban areas, timber frame buildings have been and are being used more and more. Japan, like the UK, has a wealth of timber growing in the many mountainous areas that surround their cities.
