Welcome to our final issue of 2024! It’s certainly been a very challenging year for many businesses, and the full effects of the recent Budget are perhaps yet to be felt, but the past 12 months have also seen a great many highlights, achievements, and causes for celebration. No doubt 2025 will offer its fair share of opportunities and reasons to be optimistic. (Look out for our 2025 forecast piece in January’s issue, complete with contributions from across the industry).

One of the biggest topics for 2025 is likely to be the continued evolution of digital technologies, and particularly AI, in manufacturing. On page 20, I interview Markus Seibold, the talented CEO of MakerVerse, on this very subject. Having founded MakerVerse in Berlin just two years ago, Markus and his team have built a sophisticated AI-powered fulfilment platform for on-demand manufacturing that is already making waves in the industry.

Sustainability is perhaps the other most talked about topic, and will continue to be for the foreseeable. With this being said, such is the pressure to showcase green credentials that unintentionally exaggerating one’s policies is a very real pitfall. On page 62, sustainability consultancy Oakdene Hollins’ director, Simon Scholes, highlights the ease with which companies can fall into the greenwashing trap, and how to avoid doing so.

Published in tandem with this issue is our annual edgebanding supplement. With the growing demand for bespoke designs and ever-more exacting material choices, the edgebanding sector is rising to the occasion with increasingly sophisticated designs – a fantastic selection of which are contained within the supplement. We hope you find it a useful and inspiring resource.

Last but not least, as the year draws to a close, we’d like to thank all of our clients, partners and industry colleagues for their continued support. It’s a pleasure to record and share your expertise, innovation and success stories in these pages.

On behalf of the whole Furniture & Joinery Production team, we wish you a peaceful and happy festive season, and look forward to working with you in 2025!

Continental Plants earn ISCC PLUS Sustainability Certification

The ContiTech group sector’s facilities in Waltershausen and Eislingen recently became the first Continental plants in Germany to receive the internationally recognised International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS. This certification confirms Continental’s compliance with and documentation of certain

processes for the mass balance of raw materials.

The transparent balancing principle allows renewable and recycled raw materials to be mixed into existing systems and processes. The quantity of certified materials used for the manufacture of a product is tracked along the entire value chain and can be precisely accounted for.

The plants in Waltershausen and Eislingen can thus precisely trace the share of certified renewable and recycled raw materials in its products without changing its existing production processes. This enables more efficient use of resources and promotes the integration of alternative materials. www.continental.com

Group increases net sales by 10.3%

Despite a year and a half of historically weak demand in the building industry, STARK Group continues to grow.

Driven by the acquisition of one of the UK’s largest distributors of building materials in February 2023, net sales increased by 10.3%. However, leveraging scale benefits and tight cost management were not enough to offset inflationary pressures, resulting in an 18.4% decline in operating profit.

“We deliver a satisfactory result after a year of headwinds,” says Group CEO,

Wood import fluctuations stabilise in 2024

The latest figures for August 2024 show imports of the main timber and panel products fell below the levels seen in August 2023 by nearly 4%.

Lower hardwood plywood imports contributed to this lower volume, down 19% in the month. However, hardwood plywood volumes were untypically high in August 2023, exaggerating this year’s monthly decline.

Despite the fall seen in August, overall import volumes of the main timber and panel products remain just 2.8%

lower in the first eight months of 2024 than during the same period in 2023 – with the overall deficit remaining the same as last month. This shows timber and panel imports have largely steadied over the last 18 months, following a period of

BFM re-named as British Furniture Association

The British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) has announced a change of name to the British Furniture Association (BFA) to consolidate its expanding representation in the UK marketplace.

Representatives from the BFA announced the new name at a press reception held on 21st November at the Furniture Makers’ Hall in London.

“With the changing nature of the industry and more recent expansion of membership, we felt it was the right time to change the name of the organisation to reflect the broader range of businesses

in our industry and Association,” says Phil Spademan, Chief Executive of the BFA.

“The title British Furniture Association provides a catch-all description of the new markets we operate in, without any change in our fundamental position to represent those organisations committed to supporting British furniture, from design, manufacture and industry engagement, right through to the sales.

“We look forward to exciting times ahead and to continue being the voice of a diverse, exciting and vibrant industry.”

“The BFM was founded in 1947,

and since its formation, the industry has changed substantially,” adds Nick Garratt, Chair of the BFA. “The number of manufacturers has declined, and consequently, manufacturing membership of BFM is now much smaller than it once was.

“Businesses in the industry are now much broader, with vertical integration blurring the lines of traditional business models. Retailers have moved into manufacturing, manufacturers have moved into retail, and in some instances, manufacturers have acquired downstream suppliers.

“The membership of the Association had already changed to reflect the broader needs of the industry.

“The long-established Supply category has grown substantially, and the industry and organisation has seen the benefits of bringing suppliers and manufacturers closer together.

“The more recently launched ‘Retail’ category is also expected to continue to grow.

“As an organisation, there are many benefits of scale. A key part of our objectives includes lobbying Government. The bigger our scale – the more companies and types of companies we represent.”

Phil Spademan concludes: “We felt that the name change to the British Furniture Association provided a great opportunity to share news about our achievements to date, and plans for the future.

“We are blessed to represent a superb industry, and we are proud to be the voice of the sector in the UK.”

2024 Wood Awards winners announced

The 2024 Wood Awards reached its conclusion on 20th November, recognising a fleet of prestigious projects and products selected by a judging panel of leading architects, engineers, designers, artists, critics and sustainability experts.

HIAVEN

Led by Jim Greaves of Hopkins Architects, The Wood Awards building judges visited all 18 buildings shortlisted in the Wood Awards before deciding the winner, in one of the UK’s most rigorous assessments for any competition.

A “remarkable’ retrofit of The Brighton Dome Corn Exchange & Studio Theatre by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios was given the Gold Award.

Meanwhile, HIAVEN, WorkStack, Clare College, Bough Terrace and Rhodes House Garden Pavilion all won their categories, showcasing the diversity and beauty of

timber, from large workspaces to jewel-like pavilions.

Haileybury SciTech and Uist House were recipients of the special Sustainability and Research & Innovation awards.

Among the furniture and object winners were Communion by Giles Tettey Nartey, the Ebworth Stools by the Sylva Foundation and National Trust, Endless Orbit by Oliver Spendley and Karl and Rita by Alex Radivan – each showing outstanding talent in British design using wood.

“Congratulations to the team behind the Brighton Dome Corn Exchange & Studio Theatre, and

all entrants in this year’s Wood Awards,” says David Hopkins, CEO of Timber Development UK – organisers of the Wood Awards.

“Timber – and retrofit – have crucial roles in decarbonising construction, and as an organisation, we spend a lot of time campaigning, promoting and educating about the role of timber. But there is no substitute for showing examples in practice.

“All of the winners and the shortlisted projects are incredible examples of British architecture and design, and I know the judging gets more

difficult every year – with so many wonderful timber buildings in the UK continuing to emerge.

“We are seeing climateconscious architects, engineers, and other designers increasingly choosing to use wood as the primary material in their projects – recognising its low-carbon nature, warmth, and beauty – which has so brilliantly been put on display this year.

“Every single one of the entrants was remarkable, and we hope that the 2024 awards will inspire even more designers to work with wood.”

MakerVerse – building the future of on-demand manufacturing

Gemma Lochhead had the pleasure of speaking with Markus Seibold, CEO of MakerVerse to discover more about its leading platform for the sourcing of industrial parts ...

Whatever side you land on in the AI debate, there is little doubt that artificial intelligence wields the power to transform the industrial landscape irrevocably. Indeed, AI has seamlessly permeated so many aspects of our daily lives – curating the content we consume, “enhancing” our communication and informing our healthcare, education, security and more.

Though current adoption among UK businesses is comparatively small, a 2022 research report commissioned by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport indicates that the overall adoption rate of AI among UK businesses is set to reach 34.8% by 2040.

Within the furniture industry specifically, AI is already making an impact when it comes to inventory management, prototype generation, monitoring of production equipment, improving efficiency, and so much more.

Though ethical questions – from security, to bias and job displacement – must be carefully considered as AI continues to evolve, its onward progress seems inevitable. The onus will be on manufacturers, therefore, to explore how it might benefit them.

With large numbers of manufacturers planning to invest in AI in the coming years, there will be increasing demand for specialist companies with an implicit understanding of how AI might meet the industry’s unique needs and challenges.

One such business is Berlin-based MakerVerse. Founded in 2022 and offering a sophisticated AI-powered fulfilment platform for on-demand

“One of MakerVerse’s most significant achievements is the recent release of its advanced AI-based automatic pricing technology for CNC quotes”

manufacturing, MakerVerse’s evolution over the past two years has been immense. Today, it has a talented team of more than 50 – a large proportion of which have an engineering/manufacturing background.

“MakerVerse was founded to make manufacturing as easy as ordering on an e-commerce website,” explains CEO Markus Seibold. “We had the early backing of industrial companies such as Siemens Energy and ZEISS. Since 2022, we’ve expanded as an on-demand manufacturing platform in all areas.

“We now offer a full range of manufacturing technologies, including

CEO Markus Seibold

3D printing, CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication and many more.

“We started with an industrial focus, but now serve companies across all industries and sizes. Our projects include prototypes for furniture or advanced components for electric vehicles. Regardless of the project, we’re focused on reliably delivering high-quality parts.”

Resolving a universal issue

Prior to co-founding MakerVerse, Markus gained extensive experience as VP of Additive Manufacturing at Siemens Energy, where he was responsible for increasing the adoption of 3D printing.

“Although I focused on heavy machinery, such as turbines, aviation, rockets and high-performance cars, my challenges were universal across all industries,” explains Markus.

“Sourcing parts was a major hassle, requiring a lot of paperwork, time, and supplier validation. We calculated that for a procurement and engineering manager, about 30% of their time was spent on

“We’re still in the early stages, but companies that embrace AI now will fare much better than those that don’t”

paperwork. MakerVerse was created to solve this issue.”

Meeting challenges head-on

The primary benefits of AI are widely accepted to include its improvement of process efficiency, minimisation of errors, and assistance in risky or arduous tasks –all of which are immensely valuable within the manufacturing industry.

MakerVerse is passionate about removing the burden of these lengthy and often inefficient processes, giving engineers and procurement departments the time and headspace for innovation.

“Furniture manufacturers face some of the same challenges affecting the wider manufacturing industry,” says Markus. “Prices are going up, supply chain disruptions are becoming hard to avoid, and too much time is being spent on “old-school” processes instead of more impactful things.

“We want to make it easy for procurement managers and designers to focus on what matters most – innovation. We care for the rest by finding the best suppliers, organising all the shipments, and digitalising the design and purchase process.”

Introducing MakerVerse’s AI-based automatic pricing technology

One of MakerVerse’s most significant achievements to date is the recent release of its advanced AI-based automatic pricing technology for CNC quotes. This groundbreaking new feature enables precise and highly customisable autoquotes for CNC-manufactured parts, taking into account full part specifications based on 2D drawings.

“Before, getting a CNC machining quote was always a highly manual process that took far too long,” says Markus. “Even when a company offers an “automatic” CNC quote, the result is incomplete, following only general tolerances and standards and not precisely what’s specific on the technical drawing for this specific part.

“CNC machining is furniture companies’ most popular manufacturing technology, so we wanted to disrupt the process completely. Our AI-powered pricing engine uses AI to extract and analyse geometric metadata from 3D files and the full product manufacturing information from 2D technical drawings. This feature makes it easy to get precise and

“The exciting thing is that the benefits from AI can be seen right now, and they’re not just hypotheticals for years down the road”

customisable quotes for more than 150 materials and dozens of finishes in just a few moments. So far, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.”

Few could argue that the availability of sophisticated and dynamic features such as this will not benefit manufacturers exponentially. Indeed, AI’s impact on predictive maintenance, quality control and streamlined processes can have a profound impact on daily operation, and ultimately, profit margins.

“I’m a big believer in AI, and I’m always looking for applications that help with manufacturing,” affirms Markus. “The exciting thing is that the benefits from AI can be seen right now, and they’re not just hypotheticals for years down the road.

“AI-powered instant quotes for manufacturing technologies like CNC machining are just one benefit for the furniture manufacturing industry, as they save time while encouraging experimentation in different designs and materials.

“The other applications are exciting, too. AI-assisted demand planning eliminates much of the uncertainty surrounding the process. The same goes for supply planning, as AI is extremely effective at getting insights from structured and unstructured data across various sources.

“We’re still in the early stages, but companies that embrace AI now will fare much better than those that don’t.”

The future of MakerVerse

Interest in AI and an awareness of its benefits are at an all-time high within the manufacturing sphere, but research suggests that implementation is lagging behind, particularly in Europe.

MakerVerse’s 2024 report on AI in European Manufacturing suggests that lack of expertise is the biggest challenge when it comes to implementing AI, followed by high initial investment costs and data privacy/security concerns.

Though these are credible challenges, there is an overwhelming sense of optimism about AI’s potential to improve efficiency in the future. Where there’s a will, there’s a way, as they say.

So, what does the future hold for MakerVerse? “We want to be the Amazon of on-demand manufacturing,” says Markus. “That means we’re the one place customers need to order high-quality parts from any manufacturing method and material.

“Like Amazon, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re in the furniture manufacturing industry and looking to strengthen your supply chain, or you’re building a highly technical device in the heavy machinery industry, you can find exactly what you need with MakerVerse.”

Given MakerVerse’s ingenuity and the impressive diversification of its services and technologies over the past two years, this is by no means an unrealistic target. www.makerverse.com

The Brighton Dome Corn Exchange & Studio Theatre

We take a closer look at the “remarkable” retrofit of Brighton’s timber-framed landmark arts centre by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, recently named the UK’s best timber building at the 2024 Wood Awards.

“The project saw the painstaking repair and restoration of the UK’s longest single-span timber frame”

Set within historic Regency gardens and adjoining the famous Royal Pavilion, the Grade-I Listed Corn Exchange and GradeII Listed Studio Theatre buildings have been thoughtfully restored, strengthened and remodelled – revealing a rich timber heritage to visitors fortunate enough to visit.

In addition to a new foyer space and café that considerably improves connection and accessibility, the project saw the painstaking repair and restoration of “the UK’s longest single-span timber frame”, requiring significant engineering talent from the project team.

The construction was completed by R. Durtnell & Sons and Westridge Construction Ltd, with wood supplied by Neil Burke Joinery and Weitzer Parkett.

Arup were appointed as structural engineers, while the building services and sustainability consultants were Max Fordham.

By meticulously re-analysing the whole structure, the project team brought the building up to modern design standards with a solution that preserves and enhances the original timber roof –repairing rather than replacing damaged parts.

The matching of old timber with new creates a striking space with an inherent sense of warmth – an ode to the UK’s timber heritage.

“Every aspect of design has been considered within the interior of this building,” affirms Jim Greaves, lead judge of the Wood Awards and Principal of Hopkins Architects.

“The

matching of old timber with new creates a striking space with an inherent sense of warmth –an ode to the UK’s timber heritage”

“The historic roof, stripped bare, sits atop a newly restored interior that recalls the earlier use of the building as a riding school. The building demonstrates that advanced engineering and skilled craftmanship, allied with a sensitive approach to design, can deliver a newly restored and repurposed building fit for the 21st century.”

As the most comprehensive supply chain body for timber in the UK, TDUK is a crucial resource that connects, inspires and supports more than 1500 businesses to “build a better world through wood” For further details of this project, and access to TDUK’s full library of 174 technical case studies, sign up for free on its website. www.timberdevelopment.uk www.woodawards.com

McEvoy & Rowley brings kitchen manufacturing in-house with HOMAG machinery

McEvoy & Rowley, a family-run business with over 50 years of history, has long been a staple in the Maidenhead community, offering top-tier kitchen designs and appliances. Originally, they relied on suppliers from Scotland and Germany to provide their kitchen products. However, the disruptions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic exposed critical vulnerabilities in their supply chain, leading to issues with quality, lead times, and overall customer satisfaction.

Faced with these challenges, McEvoy & Rowley made the strategic decision to take control of their manufacturing process by bringing it in-house. To achieve this pivotal move, they turned to HOMAG, who stood ready with a bespoke solution consisting of no less than nine machines.

Choosing HOMAG

The transition from purchasing kitchens to manufacturing them required careful planning and investment in the right machinery. McEvoy & Rowley needed a solution that would allow them to produce high-quality kitchen units quickly and

accurately, without the common issues they had experienced with supplier-made products, such as units arriving out of square.

Jake Howard, the Factory Manager at McEvoy & Rowley, recalls the company’s initial approach: “We were new to manufacturing, so we spoke with several of the big manufacturing giants to explore our options. As you’d expect, HOMAG were on that list – and after our meeting with Ian Woodall, their Sales Manager, we were more or less convinced that they were the best choice for us.

“What set HOMAG apart was their willingness to listen to our specific needs

and provide tailored advice. They didn’t just give a big sales pitch – they genuinely wanted to ensure we had the right equipment for our operations.”

To the nines

After detailed consultations, HOMAG recommended a suite of machines that perfectly aligned with McEvoy & Rowley’s goals. Rather than pushing for CNC machines, which are commonly used but might not meet the speed and precision requirements for their specific needs, HOMAG guided them towards beam saws and edgebanders.

“A lot of manufacturers seem to go

“What set HOMAG apart was their willingness to listen to our specific needs and provide tailored advice”

down the CNC route. But we’ve found that, a lot of the time, you can attribute faults in products back to the CNC machine being used. We also wanted machines that could work faster. So Ian introduced us to HOMAG’s beam saws, which promised perfect cuts 99.9% of the time – and at speed. This would solve a lot of the issues we had when we were buying kitchens from suppliers.”

The SAWTEQ S-300 panel saw was, therefore, selected, but this was just one piece of the puzzle. Also purchased were two EDGETEQ S-300 edge banders, a LOOPTEQ O-300 return conveyor, a Makor Start One spray machine, two DRILLTEQ models (V-200 and V-500) for drilling and doweling, an XES Glue Service Station, and a CABTEQ T-200 case clamp.

“The advice given by HOMAG was absolutely spot on. It was the first time our company had gone into any kind of manufacturing, so it was great to have their expertise at hand, and we couldn’t be happier with how all nine machines are performing.”

Implementation

The implementation process was smooth and well-coordinated, beginning with a thorough site survey conducted by HOMAG. “They were very clear on who was going to arrive and when,” Jake

noted. “The entire installation was very professional, and HOMAG had a great presence on-site, which really put us at ease.”

Training was another critical aspect of the transition. HOMAG provided comprehensive training sessions for McEvoy & Rowley’s team, ensuring they were fully equipped to operate the new machinery. This training allowed the company to gradually shift their production in-house, significantly reducing their reliance on external suppliers.

Benefits realised

Since bringing the manufacturing process in-house, McEvoy & Rowley have seen numerous benefits.

“Cost savings is the obvious one. We were spending crazy money on kitchens from external suppliers. Moving everything in-house will save us a fortune in the long run.

“Equally, if not more beneficial, is the quality assurance we’ve gained. We now have full control over the product we sell, and when you’re working with such accurate and reliable machinery, that’s a great position to be in. It also means we can make tweaks to products as and when needed, which customers always appreciate.”

Additionally, McEvoy & Rowley now

have the ability to invite customers to view their kitchens being made, providing transparency and boosting confidence in their products. “We’ve enjoyed showing customers around our factory to see the HOMAG machinery in action. It’s made a huge difference to how our guys can sell our kitchens – and it’s improved the customer experience as a whole.”

Final thoughts

One of the standout aspects of working with HOMAG, according to Jake, was their honest and consultative approach. “They even challenge us on things to make sure it’s the right decision. We’ve always appreciated that they won’t just let you spend your money on something you don’t actually need.”

He concludes, “Bringing our manufacturing in-house was a huge decision – daunting, to say the least. HOMAG not only made it possible, but they also made it as seamless as can be. From start to finish, the service was excellent, and we’re glad to consider them a partner as our business continues moving forward.”

As the end of the year approaches, rich, dark autumnal colours are becoming increasingly popular in interior design, adding sophistication, luxury and depth to any room. These colours create a cosy yet dramatic atmosphere.

Lastly, Ristretto Baroque Oak is a strong woodgrain design with dark coffee brown highlights, featuring a vintage look with a subtle grain. It combines straight and slightly elliptical shapes throughout, creating an elegant aesthetic.

Slow Living Simplicity

The slow living simplicity trend has gained momentum in recent years as people seek to reduce stress and find more meaningful experiences in their daily lives. The use of neutral colours, which play a key role in creating a calm and harmonious environment, is an integral part of this trend.

Carat Beige, Macadamia, Keren, Alpaca, and Cajun Premier Matts offer a selection of natural colours that can be mixed or used alone to create a natural environment.

Carat Beige Premier Matt presents a beige tone with delicate, warm grey hints, creating a neutral and modern appearance. As beige makes a comeback, this new shade with a fresh twist reflects a revived interest in warmth and cosiness in interior design.

Blum Space Step – two storage solutions in one

Floor-to-ceiling storage ideas don’t come more practical than Blum’s Space Step, which makes it the ideal product to round off the ‘all you need is space’ campaign from Hill’s Panel Products (HPP) and its long-time trading partner, Blum.

Each month for the past five months, the two renowned companies have been highlighting products that improve workspace and workflow, space and storage, and convenience – such as Blum’s Pull Out Shelf Lock, Space Tower, Sink Cabinet and Space Twin.

Space Step not only allows you to install higher cabinets, but also creates extra storage space in the toe kick of base units. Two solutions rolled into one that can be applied up to 1200mm wide –perfect for customers who want to store lots of things.

“Space Step not only allows you to install higher cabinets, but also creates extra storage space in the toe kick of base units”

Versatile applications

Space Step provides a step platform and pull-out under the step (provided the plinth is at least 150mm high). Of course, the higher the plinth (the maximum is 250mm), the bigger the storage space. Ideal for seldom-used items.

There are three different plinth options – recessed plinth, recessed low plinth and flush plinth – to choose from, making the Space Step suitable for applications throughout the home.

The Servo-Drive electrical motion support system delivers supreme ease of use. Space Step opens at a single touch anywhere on the front and closes again

softly and effortlessly with Blumotion. Activated by a weight of just 8kg and supporting up to 150kg, an anti-slip system securely locks the Space Step in position, ensuring safety and stability.

Step into innovation

Space Step can be used with all Blum’s box and runner systems anywhere in the home, particularly in bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens.

For example, you could upgrade the Space Tower larder unit with the two-fold benefits of Space Step.

Firstly, it creates extra storage under the step, and secondly, it gives easy access to storage items on the top shelf – access to which could be made easier thanks to Aventos, Blum’s inspiring range of lift systems that provide easy access to wall cabinets.

With Aventos, users still have full freedom of movement even when cabinet fronts are open.

HPP – official Blum partner

HPP, which has its manufacturing and supply headquarters in Oldham, Lancashire, and a trade counter in Sheffield, Yorkshire, has been trading with Blum throughout its 33-year history.

Most Blum products are available off the shelf for next-day delivery across the UK.

Unilin Panels doubles Master Oak collection with six new designs

Unilin Panels has introduced 12 striking new designs, six new Master Oak designs and six new Supermat designs, doubling the range of its acclaimed Master Oak and elevating interior design possibilities.

This latest expansion brings the Master Oak collection to a total of twelve designs, which, when combined with the six new Supermat designs, offers unparalleled choice and versatility for architects and designers.

A next-generation surface that redefines interiors

Over the past two years, Master Oak has garnered numerous awards across various countries, recognised for its outstanding design and craftsmanship. The secret behind this success lies in the collection’s ability to capture the natural beauty of real oak so closely that even experts find it hard to tell the difference. This impressive realism has now been translated into six new colours. While patina natural and natural hay explore beautiful original oak tones, it is the natural copper, soft white, patina greige and green that stand out.

Adding colour explorations to Master Oak, these new designs are expressive and give new depth to interiors without sacrificing authenticity. Subtle tonal hues are created in harmony with the grain –colour, pattern and texture are in perfect synchronicity.

From rough to smooth and everywhere in between, Master Oak feels like touching the real thing. And with a uniquely matt surface with almost absent shine, it looks like it too.

Master Oak has “three times the scratch resistance of oak veneer” and a UV-stable surface that doesn’t fade. The surfaces are safe from stains and simple to clean to enhance their longevity. Heat- and impact-resistant, Master Oak is a faultless performer that brings interiors a durable, low-maintenance finish.

Introducing six new Supermat designs

In addition to the new Master Oak colours, the soft touch of Supermat is now ready to heighten sensory experiences in six new colours, providing a modern twist that complements the classic appeal of oak.

In Stone, Taupe, Fresco, Conifer, Mahogany and Night, the new Supermat options explore rich and warm hues to enrich interiors. The purist colours combine with a soft and warm touch for a surface that invites a tactile connection beyond the ordinary and one that’s kept clear with Supermat’s anti-fingerprint technology.

“This next-generation surface has been revolutionary in the interior industry and is rapidly growing as a sustainable and superior quality alternative to solid oak and veneers”

Together, these 12 new designs elevate the Master Oak collection, blending seamlessly with the top-performing designs already beloved by customers.

Discover the perfect material for every project

Every interior project begins with the careful selection of materials that meet both functional needs and aesthetic aspirations. With the expanded Master Oak collection, Unilin Panels offers a selection that not only feels natural and timeless but also redefines functionality through cutting-edge wood technology.

A wood revolution

Master Oak is available in MDF and melamine-faced chipboard panels. For the chipboard, 95% recycled wood is used, offering a more sustainable alternative to oak and oak veneer. By taking old furniture and wood waste and turning it into chipboards, Unilin Panels uses less new materials and gives old wood a new life as Master Oak panels. By making chipboards in this way, Unilin Panels processes more

than 900,000 tonnes of recycled wood every year.

Supermat comes in melamine-faced MDF and, here, Unilin is making a move towards more sustainable production with the development of the world’s first MDF recycling technology. Recovering and reusing wood fibres, by 2030 Unilin Panels will use an MDF wood mix containing 25% recycled fibres. This will lock in an extra 380,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.

Also available as HPL sheets and edge tape, the Master Oak and Supermat updates to the Decorative Range 20222026 are ready to enhance and inspire. www.unilinpanels.com

HELPING TO CREATE A BETTER ENVIRONMENT FOR YOU, YOUR CLIENTS AND FOR THE PLANET.

Hotmelt PUR adhesives for panel assembly and flat lamination

No two panels are the same; some are made for furniture, others for doors, and others are composite panels for the lightweight construction of commercial buildings or the interior outfitting of ships and yachts. On the one hand, this results in major differences in production – for example, the bonding of different materials – but also different process parameters. For the right choice of adhesive, you must take all these aspects into account. It is, therefore, essential to seek expert advice when choosing an adhesive.

An expert will analyse your processes, check the material compatibility and then select the adhesive with the appropriate product characteristics. This is because properties such as viscosity, open time and curing time have a direct impact on production efficiency as well as the quality of the finished products.

PUR hotmelt adhesives for flat lamination must be easy and even to apply, and there are generally two application methods: by slot nozzle directly onto the decorative film or by roller application onto the panel. Do you want a high gloss or super matt

finish on the surface? There are specially designed adhesives for this.

In the production of sandwich or composite panels, different types of material are usually bonded together. The panels often have a foam or honeycomb core, which is enclosed by two thinner panels made of wood, plastic or even metal. The number of material layers and the thickness of the panels can vary depending on the function and requirements, but it is important that the PUR adhesive has a broad adhesion spectrum to permanently bond all materials together.

Another important point is occupational safety. In addition to traditional PUR hotmelt adhesives, low-emission adhesives are increasingly being used. They have a reduced content of free isocyanate monomers of less than 0.1%. They are, therefore, not subject to labelling requirements under the Hazardous Substances Ordinance, nor are they subject to mandatory training for the safe handling of isocyanate-containing substances. By using these low-emission adhesives, you reduce your employees’ exposure to potentially harmful substances. After all these important aspects, are you sure that you are using the ideal adhesive for your processes and materials, or is there potential for optimisation? Extraction Solutions and Modesta working together towards cleaner air.

Both UK-based Extraction Solutions (ESL) and Dutch family business

Modesta are experts on dust extraction with several generations of experience. They found each other in their shared mission of finding the right solution for every customer. Now, they work together on UK-based projects to ensure clean, safe and efficient factories.

Wyboud Kloppenburg and James Parkes are both in the business of dust extraction. Being the third and second generation in their family businesses, respectively, they make sure woodworking businesses can keep their factories clean and safe. Their close-knit collaboration has been going on for almost seven years, but it started out with a single phone call in 2018.

“With many projects in the UK and Ireland, I found myself traveling back and forth regularly,” recalls Wyboud, from Modesta.

Modesta’s Wyboud Kloppenburg and Extraction Solutions’ James Parkes

In order to enable a faster service to clients on the other side of the sea, he was looking for a local partner.

“I had seen Extraction Solutions’ work on a couple of occasions at jobs throughout the country and I’d noticed the quality of their work: from all the different projects I’d seen, they were the best.”

The feeling was mutual: “We’d seen Modesta’s filters at work on-site and liked their cascading system and built-in fans, and were particularly impressed by how much energy they saved, so when Wyboud called us up to arrange for a meeting, we were very happy,” recalls James from Extraction Solutions.

Turn-key solutions

Extraction Solutions is a Yorkshirebased business that started out in 2012. Founders Neil Parkes and Nick Wright had worked on over 100 installations together in their previous jobs, Nick with a focus on installation and Neil as an extraction specialist.

They realised that together, they could design and implement the best extraction and handling solutions available. With their business, they deliver everything from small-scale projects to turn-key extraction systems for big factories, mostly within the woodworking industry.

Both of their sons are currently active in the company as well. James Parkes started on-site but gradually moved into contracting and designing. Now, he oversees the larger projects.

“From all the different projects I’d seen in the UK, Extraction Solutions’ jobs were the best”

Wyboud Kloppenburg, Modesta

“I’ve had a lot of freedom to discover the different jobs and departments within the company,” James says. “That helps me do my job well: having worked on-site in various roles has given me a better understanding of the whole process.”

Empowering clean air

Like James, Wyboud Kloppenburg has had several roles within his family’s company before taking over the baton from his father, Diederick, in 2018. His grandfather founded the business in 1949, amid the post-war reconstruction period in the Netherlands.

Starting out as a company specialised in the drying and conditioning of grains and grasses by applying heat and air, Modesta slowly shifted towards ventilation technology for the agri, woodworking and recycling industry under the reign of Diederick Kloppenburg, son of the founder. When Wyboud took over his father’s role, he had been involved in the family business for many years already. He currently oversees general operations, sales and client contact, travelling all over the world regularly.

Modesta and ESL recently delivered their largest project to date, at Wren Kitchens, with an extraction capacity of 1,700,000m3/h

Efficiency and transparency

Both family businesses value a customerfirst approach. “Being family-owned, we’re not trying to please any shareholders,” says James. “For both me and Wyboud, it’s not just about selling: it’s about doing a good job. We want to provide a great solution for a reasonable price.” That translates to an efficient, transparent way of working.

“We don’t just go in and provide what a customer asks for: we also challenge their ideas and offer advice based on our past experience,” explains James. “They appreciate that a lot. We work together with the customer to ensure they get the best system possible.”

Joining forces

Both companies have their own expertises: while Modesta has three generations worth of experience in extraction, ESL brings its extensive knowledge about ducting.

Their first mutual project took place in 2016, when they delivered a filter

installation at the Images Kitchens and Bedrooms factory in Chester.

Recently, they delivered their largest project to date, at Wren Kitchens, with an extraction capacity of 1,700,000m3/h. But smaller projects, like the one at Select Interiors, are part of their mutual portfolio, too.

“For us, it’s an added value that we have a local partner on the ground, someone that has a network in the area and can take care of the operational and practical aspects of installing a project,” says

Wyboud, “they can also take care of service and stocking spare parts.”

James elaborates: “We can do most of the servicing ourselves, but if we need any modifications on the software, we simply call Modesta and they fix things remotely.”

By combining the two companies’ knowledge and capacity, they’re able to take on any dust extraction project, whether big or small. www.modestafilters.com www.extractionsolutions.co.uk

Ecogate® controls Riverside airflow

At Riverside Wood Products Ltd, in Darwen, Lancashire, Extractly Ltd has carried out a significant upgrade and reconfiguration of the company’s dust extraction system, including the installation of energy-saving ‘extraction on-demand’ technology.

Headed up by Paul Sullivan, RWP is a well-established, family-owned joinery shop offering a wide range of machining services. As well as processing high volumes of panels and ‘cut & edge’ boards, plus timber components in all shapes and sizes, the company also undertakes everything from carcassing and assembly work to individual bespoke furniture projects.

For over a decade, the company had enjoyed steady and continuous growth in the relative comfort of a 9,000 sq. ft. workshop. In more recent years, however, having invested in several new machines to keep pace with the demands of an ever-expanding order book, it’s fair to say the company’s workshop was bulging at

“Extractly’s onsite installation engineers, led by experienced operations director, Graham Day, were a credit to the company”

the seams. So, in early 2024, when the adjacent warehouse space unexpectedly became vacant, Paul Sullivan took the decision to literally ‘knock through to next door’ and has more than doubled the available floor space.

The now vastly-improved production facility includes an impressive line-up of Homag machinery; including several CNC machining centres, plus a couple of edge banders, as well as a horizontal beam saw. “When all these high-speed machines are in operation, the need for an equally efficient dust extraction system is obviously essential”, says Paul Sullivan, “and this reorganisation of the factory presented us with the perfect opportunity to upgrade and reconfigure the system as we relocated the various machines.”

Extractly’s sales director, Jake Oldfield, had initially been invited to assess the company’s requirements for a completely new extraction system, including the supply and installation of a new filter unit. Subsequently, however, following the winding down of production at L&G

Modular Homes’ factory in Yorkshire, and obviously with a keen eye for a good deal, Paul Sullivan had acquired a substantial pre-owned filter unit, complete with its 75kW main extraction fan. “Getting it transported across the Pennines and fixed securely in place here was the easy part,” Paul conceded, “but installing new ductwork throughout the factory, and getting the whole system to work safely and efficiently with a second-hand filter unit, was definitely a job best left to the professionals!”

To serve all the newly-located machinery, Extractly installed Nordfab Quick-Fit ductwork throughout the expansive production space

“Although we’d had to forgo an order for a new filter unit,” says Jake Oldfield, “this was still a sizeable project for Extractly and, because the fan and filter Paul had installed was probably powerful enough to extract from a factory twice the size, our revised proposal also included for the supply and installation of Ecogate® energy-saving ‘On-Demand’ extraction control technology.”

Without Ecogate® installed, the main fan would be operating at full power, throughout the working day, with a total annual electricity consumption estimated at around 180,000kW.

However, with an Ecogate® greenBOX controller continuously monitoring individual machine usage and, via the Ecogate® PowerMASTER™, continually adjusting fan speed to exactly match

“The workshop is a much calmer, quieter place to work than it used to be!”

extraction demand, huge reductions in electricity consumption are possible –resulting in correspondingly significant cost savings, as Paul confirmed: “Although the fan’s motor has the capacity to give us up to 75kW worth of extraction power, the Ecogate® system provides real-time data on power consumption and typically, with most machines running, we’re only using around 35kW … but that then reduces at break times, as machines are powered down, and once all machines are shut down the fan also shuts down automatically.” And, as Paul also points out: “The workshop is a much calmer, quieter place to work than it used to be!”

Although the Ecogate system is configured to control electricity usage at current production levels, it has more than enough capacity in reserve to continue providing efficient extraction if RWP invest in further new machinery. The Ecogate® greenBOX installed at Riverside is the highly intelligent ‘Nxt’ model, which has the capacity to control the operation of an extraction system with multiple main fans and up to 72 individual workstations, so the extraction system is now effectively ‘future-proofed’.

The Nxt controller has an industrial PC onboard, and a built-in web server provides remote access for fast, automated software updates. In addition, with systems controlled by a greenBOX Nxt, the processor integrated into each 24V DC motorised ‘Smart’ damper provides reports on pressure, air velocity, and air volume and, to ensure employees’ safety, minimal airflow is automatically managed across the entire ductwork system to reduce the risk of fire or explosion.

“I had a lot of confidence in the team from Extractly,” Paul explains: “In the past, we’ve probably been guilty of just going with the cheapest quote for extraction work, but once bitten, twice shy, and Extractly’s onsite installation engineers, led by experienced operations director, Graham Day, were a credit to the company.”

SAM Mouldings benefits from Dustraction’s expertise

SAM Mouldings, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of interior and exterior MDF architectural mouldings, has benefitted from dust extraction equipment supplied by Dustraction.

Founded in 1990 by Sam and Julienne McCrea, the family-run business is situated in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, and is renowned for its highquality architectural mouldings, from skirting and cladding to soffits and fascia.

The company is proud of its continued investment in product quality, delivery and service packages, and indeed in the efficiency and environment within its factories and offices. So, when it came to upgrading its existing dust extraction system, the company turned to the well-established, Leicester-based brand, Dustraction.

The immediate need was for an upgrade to SAM Mouldings woodwaste extraction system. In order to enhance the existing extraction system, Dustraction’s Steve Matuska was called upon to install a new external cyclo-filter, which would serve Weinig moulders, beam saws and various other machines, such as X-cut saws, double-end tenoners and CNC routers.

The specification was also to allow for the future addition of extra moulding and sawing capacity. The total air volume to be handled by the enhanced systems was to be almost 76,000m3/hr, plus 45% future spare capacity in the Cyclofilter.

Dustruction’s solution was the Dustrax 4X9 Cyclo filter, which would be located externally in the yard. The cyclonic filter body would be manufactured from 3mm thick mild steel sheet. Mounted within the body would be a perforated cylindrical thimble housing the filter sleeves, which would be manufactured from 450 gm/m² polyester felt.

Once fitted, the waste was to be tangentially blown into the filter chamber, and 95 per cent of the material cyclonically separated before reaching the filter media. Air passes through the filter element, leaving the remaining 5 per cent of the particulate to cake on the outside of the filter media.

At a pre-set pressure drop across the filter media, a short burst of compressed air is released down the inside of the filter sleeve in the opposite direction to the air flow to dislodge the accumulated dust cake.

In a typical reverse jet cleaning cycle, rapid-acting diaphragm valves are triggered by solenoid-operated pilot valves at intervals in a continuous sequence by an electronic controller.

By employing circular sleeves, the tendency to bridge is reduced, and the amount of sleeve deformation is restricted to give a good cake release without significant cloth movement. The filter is suitable for operating on a continuous

basis, as there are very few moving parts, and for this reason, maintenance is minimised.

The waste from the Cyclo filter would be extracted from the base of the unit and conveyed to the existing Biomass bunker, or diverted to the existing externally mounted trailers via two new pneumatic two-way valves.

All the work was carried out by Dustraction in one unbroken visit, minimising downtime for SAM Mouldings. Two years on, SAM Mouldings hasn’t experienced any issues with the system, and is highly satisfied with the service and products supplied.

The Japanese Experience, in timber-framed buildings (continued)

Chris Franklin, MD at Ranheat Engineering Ltd – a leading UK manufacturer of wood combustion equipment –continues his series of articles exclusively for Furniture and Joinery Production. In our November issue, Chris looked at how timber framed housing could help meet the UK Government’s targets on new builds. This month’s article follows on from this, and was written by Chris whilst researching timber-framed housing in Japan, in October 2024.

The new Labour Government, in its first budget, has made further commitments to build more affordable housing. This again points to the use of timber framed housing.

Timber-framed housing looks like the only way to meet Government targets with regard to the number of houses needed in the UK and maintaining carbon neutrality. With the use of timber-framed houses, housing can be erected quickly, as well as being well insulated. They can be made in a quality-controlled environment using the latest in timber technology, including engineered sections.

By embracing this new approach to housing (although others have used timber for centuries), the ambitious targets set by the new Government have the potential to be met.

The use of timber-framed construction is not limited to domestic properties only. Timber is a strong material with

engineered timber and laminated timber being used to replace steel frames.

With the drive to Carbon Neutral construction, the use of timber is a way this can be achieved. More and more architects are looking at new construction methods, and companies are increasingly keen to show their “Green Credentials” to customers, so a step towards this is to design and make their headquarters using timber-framed technology.

The other advantage of this technology is the insulation quality that a timber

framed construction brings, giving lower heating costs and sustainability.

My experience in Japan showed what was possible to achieve, but on looking closer, I found that the use of timber as an industrial construction method was already right here on my doorstep.

The photo of the industrial offices was taken within 5 miles of where I live in Northamptonshire.

The use of timber in construction, as a construction method, can only be good for the UK woodworking industry.

“The wood waste heater will have paid for itself in around a year!”

A joinery company in Suffolk has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on its operating costs.

Cleveland Joinery (East Anglia) Ltd has been producing high-quality bespoke joinery from its workshop for over 30 years, for both commercial and private customers. Having previously experienced the benefits of a wood waste heater, the management team at Cleveland Joinery (E.A.) started looking for a model that complied with the Clean Air Act due to the workshop being surrounded by residential properties.

Cleveland Joinery (E.A.) operates out of two buildings that were previously boat sheds, which have been connected to form one working workshop. With no in-built source of heating, the only options to keep the employees warm were bottled gas or electric heaters – both of which could be quite costly to use in today’s economy.

Operations Manager Andrew Cleveland saw an advert in the trade press from Wood Waste Technology and got in touch to find out more. Following a conversation with Kurt Cockroft, MD at Wood Waste Technology and a site survey, a WT5 heater was ordered and installed at the company’s 4500 sq. ft unit in Lowestoft by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers, who were able to duct the heat to warm both the workshops from one heater.

Andrew says: “The heaters are great value for money and ideal for woodworking companies like ours. Wood is a natural by-product of our business, so it’s great to be able to save money on waste disposal costs by burning our wood offcuts and turning them into free

“Given the increases in fuel costs recently, we purchased a wood waste heater at exactly the right time! We think the heater will have paid for itself in around a year because of all the savings it is providing”

heating. And, given the increases in fuel costs recently, we purchased a wood waste heater at exactly the right time! We think the heater will have paid for itself in around a year because of all the savings it is providing.

“We’ve been delighted with the advice from Wood Waste Technology about the size of heater to buy and the best place to locate it within our building, as well as the ongoing service. Coming to work in a warm environment makes everyone happier, plus we’re saving money, so the wood waste heater is proving very effective.”

“We’re delighted that the company is enjoying the benefits of its wood waste heater,” says Kurt Cockroft, MD of Wood Waste Technology. “Businesses generating waste wood should

investigate the benefits of biomass technology to reduce operating costs and improve the bottom line. Like Cleveland Joinery (E.A.), some companies get payback on the investment in less than 12 months.”

Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and is proud to claim that it supplies genuine spares “up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers”. 01785 250400

How to avoid the greenwashing trap

Sustainability consultancy Oakdene Hollins’ director, Simon Scholes, highlights the ease with which companies can fall into the greenwashing trap, and what to look for to avoid them ...

Sustainability has become one of the most misunderstood buzz words of our times. As a ‘cover all’ for everything from carbon emissions to End of Life (EoL) recycling, its context has caused many companies to fall into the trap of ‘greenwashing’ – making green claims that don’t actually stand up to verifiable scrutiny.

As well as risking coming under the probing eyes of the ASA Advertising Standards Authority, there are also regulatory initiatives such as the UK

Green Claims Code, and the European Green Claims Directive, set up in direct response to the increasing prevalence of greenwashing across industry sectors. These initiatives exist not as a punitive measure, but to help encourage and nudge organisations towards a more level playing field when it comes to incorporating sustainability claims into overall marketing messaging.

Greenwashing is often unintentional. Companies invest time and money to increase sustainability in their products and operations and, understandably, want to take credit for it. The problem arises when claims are not specific enough, tell just part of the story or lack robust data to demonstrate the claimed benefits of products or processes.

“The problem arises when claims are not specific enough, tell just part of the story or lack robust data to demonstrate the claimed benefits of products or processes”

Oakdene Hollins’ director, Simon Scholes

The following checklist highlights the key areas you need to consider when assessing the robustness of your green claims.

1. Are your claims truthful and accurate, avoiding any misleading impressions, and presented in a way that is transparent and straightforward for consumers to understand?

2. When making claims, have you considered the entire life cycle of the product or service, from initial design through to end of life? Cherry picking information or focusing only on certain aspects while neglecting others may lead to misrepresentation.

3. Have you substantiated your environmental claims by using tools such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and carbon accounting for core insight into your overall processes?

4. Is the supporting evidence for your claims publicly available and easily accessible for consumers? Documentation should prominently disclose any relevant information, condition or limitations.

5. If making comparative claims – whether about your product is better than before or better than your competitors – are you considering equivalent assessment

methodologies, environmental attributes, and lifecycle stages?

6. Do you scrutinise the green claims of raw materials and component suppliers to ensure their own systems are compliant with industry wide sustainability regulations, backed by verifiable data?

7. Have your claims been independently verified or certified by an accredited third party?

The surest road to remain green claims compliant is to be very specific, consider the full product lifecycle when claiming environmental benefits and making statements with objective facts obtained from widely accepted methodologies such as the GHG protocol or solid LCAs.

Oakdene Hollins has worked extensively in the furniture industry, both with individual companies and trade associations, to create a growing collaborative approach which will make compliance increasingly accessible for all.

At Oakdene Hollins, we are a sustainability consultancy championing the circular economy as a key solution to the climate and biodiversity crises. We help businesses create net-zero strategies and adopt circular practices that reduce environmental impact while boosting competitiveness through resource optimisation, circular design and value retention.

Commercial Timber Guidebook published

A major collaboration between property developers, insurers, and technical experts has led to the launch of the “UK’s first Commercial Timber Guidebook”. The guide aims to promote the use of structural timber in office construction, and represents a key step toward broader adoption of sustainable timber construction practices within the commercial building sector.

The initiative is spearheaded by Elliott Wood, Waugh Thistleton Architects and OFR Consultants, working with specialist insurance consultants, Lignum Risk Partners, to engage the wider sector.

The project, kickstarted with a €200,000 grant from the Built by Nature network and fund, also attracted co-funding and support from major developers Stanhope PLC, British Land, Lendlease, Related Argent, Derwent London, Landsec, MUSE, Berkeley Estate Asset Management (BEAM) and Great Portland Estates – all seeking to overcome existing barriers to mass timber adoption.

The Guidebook aims to drive the adoption of timber by demonstrating both its technical viability and its insurability. The project team worked directly with architects, developers, and engineers to create a consensus of good practice on how to incorporate structural timber into new office buildings.

By providing clear and agreed guidelines, the Guidebook helps developers, designers, and insurers align on risk mitigation strategies, ensuring that timber buildings can be constructed with confidence.

Catas defines the risk of sharp edges

The safety of furniture has always been one of the main focuses of standardisation, and the subject of “sharp edges” is dealt with in all European standard documents concerning furniture, whether for domestic use (EN 14749), non-domestic use, or for office storage and community places (EN 16121). These standards require that all “accessible” parts of a piece of furniture with which a person may come into contact must have rounded edges and vertices.

It is therefore necessary to verify that this potentially dangerous situation does not exist, but the standard does not indicate how to “measure” it to avoid assessments that are little more than subjective.

In recent years, however, Catas has decided to conduct a study to define an objective system for assessing and measuring the risk of injuries that a “sharp edge” can create, moving on two levels: people’s perception of the danger and the validation of a laboratory instrument that can objectively measure whether an edge is sharp and how much.

The tests carried out firstly established that most people consider edges and vertices of panels with a radius of curvature of fewer than 0.6 millimetres to be “sharp”. The second part of the project involved the laboratory implementation of an instrument that emulates a person’s finger, with a spring system that allows a known force to be applied to an evaluation pad that simulates human skin. By sliding this “roll” over the edge of a piece of furniture, exactly as if it were the finger of a hand, it is possible to detect whether the furniture is more or less dangerous.

The comparison between the two phases of this research made it possible to establish a precise correlation between the values collected, demonstrating how the instrument developed by Catas gives a “measure” of the actual dangerousness of an edge, providing laboratory technicians with a way of assessing the dangerousness of an edge or a vertex of furniture by applying a reliable, objective, repeatable and reproducible criterion. www.catas.com/en-GB

The centrepiece of every workshop: a MARTIN sliding table saw

The new T66 and T77 sliding table saws from MARTIN are the ideal solution for professionals who not only love wood as a material, but also value maximum precision when processing it. Both machine series fulfil the latest requirements and stand for innovation and reliability.

The T66 sliding table saw is often referred to as the ‘little sister’ of the T77. With its single-sided swivelling saw blade, it is the ideal introduction to the world of MARTIN. The T77, on the other hand, the ‘big sister’, can also be optionally equipped

with a saw unit that can be swivelled on both sides. The standard infinitely variable drive of the main saw blade, which offers power from 4.0 kW to 11 kW depending on the model, is another common feature of both models. With this drive power, cutting heights of up to 205mm can be powerfully processed. In addition, the edging table on both machines, which has been tried and tested for decades, ensures excellent cutting results.

Thanks to the innovative MARTIN ConnectControl operating system, both the T66 and T77 model series can be

seamlessly integrated into digitally networked operations. This operating concept optimally supports the use of digitalisation for operations.

Both machines offer an almost identical selection of rip and cross-cut fences with a wide range of options.

In addition, numerous modern additional options are available for the sliding table saws: from a rip fence positioned by an electric motor and the three-axis scoring saw to innovative systems such as the RadioCompens angle cutting system and the VacuSlide vacuum workpiece fixture. Whether wood-based materials, solid wood, plastics or aluminium – the T77 is a first-class partner for results with maximum precision.

With the new T66 and T77 sliding table saws, MARTIN offers a perfect combination of precision, versatility and modern technology – ideal for taking the trade to the next level.

SCM maker – the compact portable CNC router

The portable CNC router is easy to handle, so it can be placed directly on the work surface. It allows routing on large surfaces without taking up permanent space.

It is aimed at a very wide audience, from artisans, designers and makers, through to set designers, construction industries, and shared workspaces such as schools, universities and co-working spaces.

Autonomous routing

Thanks to the CAM software that generates the cutting path, SCM maker receives indications of where it should position itself to carry out the project. Once work has started, you can relax and enjoy the show as the robot will work autonomously.

Practically unlimited work area

There are no longer physical limits to the work area thanks to the sensor system that can be repositioned multiple times on the panel. Thanks to this innovation, it is possible to work panels with a diagonal of up to 3.5m.

Ease of use

SCM maker and its software are designed to be used by anyone. Once the project has been drawn and imported into the control software, the machine path is calculated, and the user will be able to check the progress thanks to a userfriendly interface with step-by-step guides.

Freedom of movement

The robot is fitted with three omnidirectional wheels, enabling it to move freely on the worktable. The three-module wheels have been specially designed so that two rollers are always in contact with the panel. In this way, the movements of SCM maker are not influenced by grooves or shapes that have already been cut.

High accuracy

The positioning system, consisting of two tower sensors powered by a rechargeable battery, triangulates the router position with the necessary exactitude, and it corrects its trajectory in case of wheels loss of traction, ensuring smooth movement and accurate cutting for each processing.

SCM Blade Off technology –redefining safety in panel sawing

Leading SCM dealer, Daltons Wadkin, is excited to announce the new Blade Off technology from SCM. In the woodworking industry, precision, efficiency, and safety are paramount. SCM, a global leader in woodworking technology, has consistently pushed the boundaries of innovation to enhance user experiences while addressing critical safety concerns.

The SCM Blade Off technology, a revolutionary safety feature for panel saws, exemplifies this commitment, offering a ground-breaking solution to one of the industry’s most pressing challenges: accidental blade contact.

Traditional safety measures for panel saws often rely on external safeguards

“At its core, the Blade Off system employs advanced sensors and real-time monitoring to detect the operator’s proximity to the saw blade”

such as physical barriers or manual intervention. While effective to an extent, these methods have limitations, particularly in environments where highspeed production demands can lead to lapses in safety protocols. The SCM Blade Off technology provides a proactive and automated approach, significantly reducing the risk of injuries.

At its core, the Blade Off system employs advanced sensors and realtime monitoring to detect the operator’s proximity to the saw blade. When a potential hazard is identified—such as an unintentional hand movement towards the blade—the system automatically stops the blade within milliseconds. This quick response is crucial in preventing accidents and ensures that production downtime is minimal.

Beyond its safety features, the technology does not compromise on performance. The integration of Blade Off is seamless, allowing panel saws to operate at full efficiency without sacrificing precision or throughput. This is particularly appealing for high-volume

production environments where safety and productivity must coexist.

Another notable benefit of the Blade Off system is its user-centric design. The intuitive interface and minimal maintenance requirements mean operators can focus on their craft without worrying about complex configurations or frequent downtimes. This ease of use enhances adoption across teams and reduces training time, making it a costeffective investment.

In a time when workplace safety is under greater scrutiny than ever, SCM’s Blade Off technology stands as a testament to how innovation can drive meaningful change. It not only safeguards operators but also reinforces the industry’s commitment to a safer, smarter future in woodworking. For businesses striving for excellence, this is a technology worth embracing.

The Blade Off system is available on the SCM Class and L’invincible panel saws. For more information contact Daltons Wadkin. 0115 986 5201
