September saw the third annual National Manufacturing Day, run by the trade body, Make UK. This celebratory occasion allowed the public to experience manufacturers’ facilities, with factories and sites countrywide opening up their doors.
Against the backdrop of a shrinking labour pool and diminishing skillset, this opportunity to engage with various demographics – from school leavers and graduates to local residents looking to reskill – is particularly valuable.
Hopefully, it was an occasion that highlighted the breadth of the industry, its highly skilled roles and many exciting opportunities. Bolstering the manufacturing industry’s appeal for the next generation will, of course, be fundamental in securing and making the most of investment opportunities in the future.
Indeed, ahead of the upcoming Autumn Statement and Spending Review in October, there are increasing calls for the Government to publish further details on its long-awaited industrial strategy. Despite some uncertainty surrounding this, findings from Make UK and BDO’s latest Manufacturing Outlook report for Q3 2024 indicate that firms are forecasting a boost to overall economic prospects from a period of greater political stability, with almost 6 in 10 expecting better growth over the next 12 months as a result.
Against this unsettled yet hopeful backdrop, our October issue features numerous case studies and insightful articles. On page 14, we explore a recent installation at September’s London Design Festival entitled ‘CascadeUp’. Masterminded by University College London’s Circular Economy Lab and UK CLT, the structure utilises waste wood remanufactured to create a sustainable alternative to high-carbon structural products.
Within our installations section, discover how the Biesse Rover B FT HD has transformed Unitech Oxon’s kitchen machining operation; explore Extractly Ltd’s installation and commissioning of a comprehensive new dust extraction system at Sweet Joinery Ltd, and learn how HOMAG machinery has enhanced the operational efficiency of Hurst Doors.
Elsewhere, we explore the latest and greatest in surfacing and decorative panels, saws and cutting technology, software & automation, and solid wood processing.
Happy reading!

Combilift secures raft of award wins Half-year timber import figures show deficit continues to fall
Combilift has seen great success on the awards scene of late, securing a doublewin at the UK Engineering & Manufacturing Awards 2024, as well as collecting two major accolades at the UKMHA Archie Awards.
At the UK Engineering & Manufacturing Awards, the ‘Design Team of the Year’ award was presented to Combilift’s Heavy Equipment Team for their exceptional work on the groundbreaking 12-Wheel “Combi-LC Blade”, while Combilift’s co-founder and CEO, Martin McVicar, received the coveted ‘Industry Leader Award’ for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to innovation.
At the UK Materials Handling Association Awards, the company walked away with the coveted ‘Ergonomic Innovation of the Year’ and the ‘Manufacturer Product Innovation of the Year’. The Combi-CB70E was celebrated for its groundbreaking ergonomic design. Combilift’s ‘Manufacturer Product Innovation of the Year’, went to the Combi LC Blade, a cuttingedge machine designed specifically to address the growing challenges of transporting offshore wind turbine blades from the manufacturing plant to storage or transportation facilities. www.combilift.com
According to Timber Development UK, timber import volumes for the first six months of 2024 remain lower than 2023, but monthly figures show that the deficit is continuing to fall, raising hopes that 2024 may end up meeting, or exceeding the previous year.
“The continued timber import deficit remains disappointing but is nevertheless unsurprising given the wider construction outlook,” says TDUK Head of Technical and Trade, Nick Boulton. “The most recent data from the Ministry of Housing, Communities, and Local Government shows that housing starts in Q1 2024 were the lowest Q1 starts for 15 years and 39% below those seen in Q1 2023.
“However, the latest Construction Products Association summer forecast is predicting growth will return in 2025, preceded by an estimated 11% decrease for 2024 as a whole.

Contraction endures for woodworking technology
The woodworking and furniture technology business is still waiting for a change of the economic scenario, according to Acimall’s report on Italian wood-furniture technology in the second quarter 2024..
The current phase of reducing orders has been going on for nine quarters and is certainly the most apparent consequence of the formidable
growth recorded by this industry and the economy in general in the post-pandemic two-year period. This abrupt return to normal has pushed the indexes back to prepandemic levels, and so far, no signs of improvement can be seen.
“We must not surrender to pessimism, as the values are remaining at significant levels,”
says Dario Corbetta, director of Acimall, the association of Italian manufacturers. “For sure, the international situation is not supporting companies with an optimistic outlook that would encourage them to reconsider investments in instrumental goods, but the Italian industry remains an excellence of the national offer”.

From ‘waste wood’ to ‘mass timber’
Years of research into how we might transform our built environment and rapidly shift to a circular economy came to fruition in a fascinating installation at this year’s London Design Festival.
Entitled ‘CascadeUp’, the installation was masterminded by University College London’s Circular Economy Lab – a crossfaculty, cross-discipline initiative aiming to use UCL’s expertise to improve the design of buildings and products – and UK CLT –a research and development-led company that localises the manufacture of crosslaminated timber and glulam using high quality recovered wood.
Timber otherwise destined for demolition waste streams was instead prepared for reuse and manufactured into ‘glued-laminated secondary timber’ (glulamST) for the building’s structural frame, and ‘cross-laminated secondary timber’ (CLST) for use as wall and floor panels.
According to the research team, the project is the “first of its kind to test this approach to the manufacture of woodbased panels and beams from reused, solid timber and assemble it at buildingscale”, offering a fascinating method of extending wood’s ability to store carbon over the long term.
The structure – which stood at 3.5m high, 2.5m wide and 2m deep – was both a symbol of the pioneering work in this sector, and offered practical use within the context of the festival as a physical stage
upon which to host talks and knowledgesharing opportunities.
“We can’t solve the climate crisis without transforming our built environment,” shares Dr Colin Rose, an architect, Senior Research Fellow at UCL and Founding Partner of UK CLT, who has led on the project.
“CascadeUp fully embraces circularity – taking wood which would be chipped and downcycled or sent to the incinerator and instead remanufacturing it to make a sustainable alternative to high-carbon
“According to the research team, the project is the “first of its kind to test this approach to the manufacture of woodbased panels and beams from reused, solid timber and assemble it at building-scale”
structural products such as concrete, steel and brick.
“Taken at scale, this is an approach that can boost local economies and drive new employment in reclamation and manufacturing sectors close to urban areas.”
Fully modular and reusable, the installation was designed with disassembly in mind. The structure can be easily upgraded and repurposed, ensuring that no materials are discarded. When no further reuse is possible, the timber can still be recycled into panel products (e.g. chipboard or MDF) and then finally incinerated for energy.
The project was supported by numerous collaborators, among them Portakabin – a longstanding company devoted to making a better future by reusing and repurposing its products and buildings – and Timber Development UK. Indeed, CascadeUp constitutes one component of the wider movement
towards a more sustainable, low-carbon future centred in London’s South Bank, which also plays host to Material Matters and the Wood Awards. There are many passionate and extremely knowledgeable voices within the design, manufacturing and construction arenas speaking to the importance of materials and their ability
“Taken at scale, this is an approach that can boost local economies and drive new employment in reclamation and manufacturing sectors close to urban areas”
to profoundly shape society. Seeing installations such as CascadeUp take shape on the design stage provides a fascinating insight into the pioneering role timber might play in this movement. www.ucl.ac.uk/circular-economy-lab www.ukclt.com www.portakabin.com

Extractly applauded for Sweet extraction
Dust and fume extraction specialist, Extractly Ltd, has recently completed the installation and commissioning of a comprehensive new dust extraction system to maintain a safe, clean workspace for North Somerset-based Sweet Joinery Ltd – one of the most successful and respected joinery firms in South West England.
Although Sweet Joinery Ltd was incorporated as recently as 2017, the business has family roots going back over five decades. Company founder, Dan Sweet, started his career in the early 2000s as an apprentice carpenter for his grandfather’s company, H. Sweet & Sons, and later went on to manage the firm’s specialist joinery shop. In 2019, Sweet Joinery’s rapid expansion was bolstered with the acquisition of Woodhill Joinery, another local family concern, also established back in the 1970s.
In addition to a collection of traditional woodworking tools that are typically employed in the crafting of bespoke kitchen cabinetry and window frames, the company’s workshop, located just a few miles southwest of Bristol, houses a comprehensive range of highperformance production machinery, including a Biesse Rover machining centre, Hebrock Edgebander and Altendorf F45 Panel Saw, along with SCM Spindle Moulder and Planer Thicknesser, and a Sedgwick Tenoner. This comprehensive set-up, teamed with a dedicated and experienced workforce, has enabled Sweet Joinery to build an enviable reputation for high-quality bespoke joinery for their clients in the retail, education and transport sectors.
As Dan Sweet explained: “To eliminate our wood waste disposal costs and to get ‘free’ heating for the workshop in the process, we wanted to install a modern,
“The installation not only provides Sweet Joinery with a renewable heating source and cuts the cost of woodwaste disposal, but it’s also a great way for the business to reduce its carbon footprint”
efficient, waste wood burner. However, to effectively filter and collect all the wood waste material our machines were producing, which was necessary to make the installation viable, it was obvious that our existing extraction would require something of an upgrade. After discussing our requirements with other colleagues in the industry, it was recommended that we
should contact Extractly for advice.”
The advice was provided by UK Sales Manager for Extractly and Ecogate, Ian Rayner: “This was a challenging but really interesting project to be involved with”, says Ian. “Key to the success of the installation was going to be a new and more efficient filter unit, including a more powerful main fan, but space and access
at the site was particularly restricted. The wood burner was being installed internally, at the rear of the workshop, along with a high-powered Reinbold Shredder, and there was just enough space here to site the 30kW ATEX fan unit we’d specified to provide the necessary maximum airflow volume of 17,000m³/hr. This would provide effective extraction from all the current machinery, plus a margin of extra capacity for future additions, but siting the filter was going to require a more complex operation, as space in front of the factory needed to be kept clear for delivery vehicles and personnel access, and a narrow passageway to the rear of the premises had already been earmarked for a vast, externally-located silo which would store the collected waste before feeding it to the new burner.”
The solution Extractly’s design engineers provided was for the new filter unit to be mounted on top of the silo. The unit selected for the task was an LBR-S HJ2 reverse air baghouse weighing in at around 2 tonnes. The unit is fitted with XT15 ‘Superbag’ filter media, and two 1.1kW regeneration fans provide filter cleaning. The modular, galvanised steel housing, with a 2.4m x 2.4m square footprint and around 6 metres tall, was craned-in over the roof of the factory and fixed into place above the silo. “The positioning of the filter unit is actually ideal”, Ian Rayner remarked. “Collected waste is discharged from below the hopper, then delivered directly into the silo, pressure-free, via an ATEX rotary valve.”
The installation not only provides Sweet Joinery with a renewable heating source and cuts the cost of woodwaste disposal, but it’s also a great way for the business to reduce its carbon footprint. And, to ensure the company derives maximum cost savings and reduces its carbon footprint even further, Ian Rayner also put forward a proposal to include Ecogate® energy-saving technology to control the dust extraction system.
“In common with all workshops involved in the production of bespoke joinery, the machines at Sweet Joinery are never all in use at the same time, so demand for extraction is continually changing throughout the working day.”
With an ‘On-Demand’ Ecogate® system controlling the extraction system, a sensor fitted to each machine monitors machine usage and sends a signal to the Ecogate® greenBOX controller whenever an individual machine comes on or off line. In turn, the greenBOX controller, via the Ecogate® PowerMASTER™ Variable
“By taking advantage of the Laws of Physics, Ecogate® technology can typically reduce electricity usage by at least 50% when the fan speed is reduced
by as little as 20%”
Speed Drive unit, immediately adjusts the fan speed to exactly match the change in demand; reducing power consumption, and obviously saving on electricity costs. However, the level of savings a company like Sweet Joinery can achieve are quite significant, as Ian went on to explain: “By taking advantage of the Laws of Physics, Ecogate® technology can typically reduce electricity usage by at least 50% when the fan speed is reduced by as little as 20%. This sort of saving is easily achieved when machine usage is varying throughout the day and, when it’s breaktime and all machines shut down, the fan also shuts down – automatically.”
In conclusion, Dan Sweet commented: “We were really pleased with the installation team from Extractly; they worked efficiently around us, and I found them to be professional and very flexible when delays on other equipment installations inevitably impacted their installation work schedules.”

Unitech Oxon works smarter with Biesse Rover B FT HD
The high-performance Biesse Rover B FT HD has transformed Unitech Oxon’s kitchen machining operation. The Banbury-based furniture manufacturer has streamlined its workflow to capitalise on faster machine times, enabling it to produce in three days what would previously have taken five days. Furthermore, thanks to the combination of a new factory dust extraction system and the T-JET feature on the Rover, the working environment is vastly improved.
Those in the surrounding area will know Unitech Oxon as a high-end, bespoke kitchen and bedroom designer and manufacturer and may even have visited its factory showroom. But there is more than one dimension to this family-run business, which has been growing steadily since it was founded by Kevin Crouch over 20 years ago. As well as selling directly to the public, Unitech Oxon services a mix of trade customers, including retailers and fitters. In recent years, the company has also moved into the contract market, manufacturing kitchens for new housing developments.
In late 2022, the contract market was booming and the kitchen manufacturer needed a faster CNC machine to cope with demand. Arguably the most productive machine on the market today for nesting operations, Biesse’s highspeed Rover B FT HD, was the obvious candidate.
Breaking boundaries
By rewriting the rules of machine design, Biesse has pushed out the boundaries of CNC performance to deliver a 30% faster cycle time with this machine. Biesse’s engineers have removed all the covers from the machine itself, instead housing the flat table in a self-contained enclosure with sliding doors for access. This provides a safe environment for operators whilst allowing machining speed to be ramped up safely. The machine’s motors, rails, racks & pinions have also been upgraded to cope with the extra inertia.
The Rover B FT HD has also been engineered to ramp up to the desired speed more quickly, with faster deceleration when turning into a corner. With an acceleration time of 10m/second, it reaches its programmed routing speed, up to a maximum of 128m/minute far sooner than the standard Rover B and other rival CNCs. That has a dramatic
impact on overall cycle time.
“We couldn’t have coped with the contract work we had without the Biesse Rover B FT HD – it provided us with a productivity boost when we desperately needed it,” says Kevin Crouch.
A productive streamlining exercise
Shortly after the installation of the new CNC, interest rates started to creep up, signalling the start of a slowdown in the property market. Anticipating the effect this would have on the contract side of its business, Unitech Oxon streamlined its CNC workflow to better utilise the Rover B’s productivity potential.
“We had less work to process and a faster machine to process it. Instead of running the machine and extraction systems for five days a week, it made sense to compress all of our CNC work into three days, which would save considerably on running costs such as
electricity and allow us to redeploy the excess labour elsewhere in the business,” explains Unitech Oxon’s head of sales and business development, Adam Watts.
For Unitech Oxon, the main challenge of moving to a three-day CNC operation has been keeping up with the machine, particularly from a preparation, loading and unloading perspective.
“Because the machine itself is so quick, we have had to change the way we work. We have had to become more efficient at getting the panels on and off the machine and have essentially had to rethink the way we manage the workflow. We still run the factory five days a week - just more efficiently,” says Kevin.
Drilling into knowledge
Biesse has supported Unitech Oxon in this efficiency drive by equipping the Rover B with features including a 32-spindle drill block and showing operators how to use this bigger drill block to increase machine productivity.
“Drilling can account for 60% of overall nesting time,” explains Mark Trapnell, the Biesse area sales manager who led this project. “For a company like Unitech Oxon, who are high-speed nesting and turning out a lot of panels that require drilling, having the wrong number of drills in the drill block can slow the process right down.”
This is exactly what was happening at Unitech Oxon with its previous machine.
“With our old machine, although we had a drilling block, we weren’t using it in an efficient way. Mark showed us how to use it properly – multi-drilling rather than pecking – and this changed the way we
“By rewriting the rules of machine design, Biesse has pushed out the boundaries of CNC performance to deliver a 30% faster cycle time with this machine”
worked. Now, if we have a line of holes that need drilling, instead of drilling each hole individually, the drill block drops five drills down and drills five holes simultaneously,” says Adam.
He estimates that this shaves approximately one minute of drilling time per panel, which may not seem much, but adds up over the course of a day.
“By the end of the day, this amounts to a time saving of up to an hour,” says Adam.
Cumulative savings
When this is combined with the time saved by the streamlined loading and
offloading operation, up to two hours a day are accrued – and that doesn’t even take into account the faster processing time of the Rover B.
“The time it takes to load a panel, to machine that panel, and to offload that panel is significantly faster than with our old machine,” says Kevin. “Previously, if we had screwed an operator’s feet to the floor and made him stand there all day long, he would have got 40 sheets of board across it. If we did the same thing with our new machine, we would get in excess of 60 sheets through the machine.”
Whilst Unitech Oxon doesn’t expect to be running at reduced capacity for much longer, when it does revert to a five-day operation, it will stick with these production principles to ensure the efficiency is maintained.
“Essentially, the Rover B has forced us to work smarter, which has given us the flexibility to accommodate ebbs and flows in the business,” says Adam.
Dealing with dust
At the same time as its investment in the Rover B, Unitech Oxon installed a new extraction system in the factory to improve the working environment.
The machining of MFC and MDF panels generates large amounts of dust, which has historically been an issue for the company.
When Unitech Oxon heard about the
award-winning T-JET feature that is available as an add-on to the Rover B, it was excited about the prospect of seeing whether this dust mitigation solution could work alongside its new extraction system to contain dust.
“With the old CNC there was an awful lot of dust left on the workpiece because as the router cut through the panel, dust fell into the channel,” explains Kevin.
T-JET: cleaning while machining
By cleaning the cut line as the dust is produced, Biesse’s T-JET offers a simple yet unique solution to this problem. A set of high-pressured nozzles are mounted to the rotating c-axis and follow the cut line, dislodging any dust that has settled in the cutting channel. As soon as it becomes airborne, the dust is removed by the extraction system so that channels are clean and free from dust.
Cleaning whilst machining is a simple enough concept but designing a rotating air jet system that can keep up with the tool as it changes direction and turns corners is no mean engineering feat. In this respect, T-JET represents a breakthrough solution – an achievement that was recognised when Biesse received the IWF 2022 Challengers Award for T-JET.
With targeted dust collection at the point of production, no further cleaning of the
“Essentially, the Rover B has forced us to work smarter, which has given us the flexibility to accommodate ebbs and flows in the business”
flat bed is required. This supports Unitech Oxon’s efficiency gains as the operator can simply offload the panels and start the next programme straight away, rather than having to clean the bed between programmes using a vacuum cleaner or sweeping arm. From an operator perspective, T-JET mitigates the amount of residual dust that remains in the working environment.
Unitech Oxon says the combination of the T-JET and the new extraction system has created a vastly improved working environment.
“It is a different workplace,” notes Kevin. “Previously there was dust everywhere –in the offices, on the computer screens. Assisted by the T-JET, the new extraction system has eliminated the issue of dust in the workplace.”
Stream A Smart: gaining an edge
On the back of its positive experience with the Rover B, Unitech Oxon has placed an order for a Stream A Smart edgebander equipped with Biesse’s innovative AR70 corner rounding unit.
Its aim is to enhance the finish on the
doors it produces for the contract market whilst improving efficiency. Historically, edging was applied using coloured glues, which meant different colours for different boards. The new edgebander will facilitate the switch to a transparent PUR glue that can be used across all doors, resulting in a thinner, more moisture-resistant glue line and a faster process.
The decision to change its approach to gluing came from attending a Biesse Edgebanding Masterclass. “Although I have been in the industry a long time, I am essentially self-taught – there is no ‘university of edgebanding’ – so it has been great to learn from Biesse. The team there has been generous in sharing its knowledge and has supported us in the implementation of its technology every step of the way,” says Kevin.
He adds: “The Rover B and the Stream A Smart are part of an investment strategy that will streamline the business and get us in the best shape to grow and move forward.”

Ambic on track for energy selfsufficiency with finance from Siemens Financial Services
Though many businesses are worried about the impact of energy prices on their operationsi, this increased pressure drives the opportunity to review consumption and consider more sustainable options. In fact, in one recent survey of energy decision-makers at UK organisations, 61% ranked energy security as a top three driver of energy decarbonisationii.
While approximately a third of surveyed executives are reviewing energy procurement or renegotiating contracts, just 23% have reduced their energy consumption, and only 19% have invested in on-site renewable energy generation.iii As the study notes, in many cases, capital investment is needed to support change.
This was the case for furniture manufacturer Ambic. Ambic manufactures bespoke contract furniture for global customers in a multitude of industries, including leisure, retail, marine, hospitality, pharma, medical, and more.
Based in the North-East of England, the business has a reputation for making quality, robust furniture. Its manufacturing centre in County Durham uses state-ofthe-art CNC machines to turn computeraided designs into precision-made furniture and fittings.
Given the energy-intensive nature of manufacturing, Ambic found costs were quickly becoming unsustainable in the face of rising energy prices. The company knew that generating its own power would be key to staying competitive in the marketplace and looked into installing solar panels on the roof of its Chester Le Street factory.
Originally, the company planned to make a small investment using its own capital funds. However, after getting in touch with finance broker Anglo Scottish and running the numbers, Ambic found that by increasing the size of the investment,
“With the new solar installation, Ambic is expecting to save £1.94m over 25 years, and eventually run on 100% renewable energy”
the business could become entirely selfsufficient.
Such an investment was beyond their budget, so Ambic set about trying to find the ideal financing partner for the project. Anglo Scottish gathered all the financial information and determined that Siemens Financial Services (SFS) would be able to provide the best solution. As a specialist financier, SFS is practised at creating solutions that consider every factor: commercial requirements, the specifications of the desired product, and its real-world application. SFS were, therefore, able to tailor an agreement to
match Ambic’s business needs and the expected outcomes of the installation.
Taking into account Ambic’s existing energy costs, SFS supplied a financing package that spread the cost of investment over a seven-year term, and structured the arrangement so that the energy cost savings from the solar panels would cover almost the whole cost of the initial investment. As an added bonus, Ambic has been able to keep its electricity costs below prior levels, all whilst servicing the new asset debt.

HOMAG machinery delivers significant operational efficiencies
Hurst Doors is proud to claim that it is the UK’s largest manufacturer of PVC-U door panels, composite doors, and fire doors. The company has been a trusted name in the industry for over 27 years, with a commitment to quality, service and value that continues to benefit customers across the UK and Europe.
Like many manufacturers, Hurst Doors faced formidable challenges during the pandemic. However, rather than surrendering to COVID and its complications, the management at Hurst Doors recognised an opportunity to turn lemons into lemonade by making significant operational improvements to their business. This was achieved with the help of HOMAG.
The rising challenge
The main challenge in question was the cost of materials, which skyrocketed during the pandemic. Howard Wilson, the Composite Manager at Hurst Doors, explains, “Aluminium prices in particular were going through the roof and, processwise, we were reliant on aluminium
extrusions that were cut to a length, then trimmed by hand on a chop saw to the required size, before being manually applied to the door edge – a rudimentary, time consuming and costly endeavour.”
The cut and edged solution
Determined to reduce costs and increase efficiency, Hurst Doors conducted a costbenefit analysis on switching to high-spec woodworking machinery. Specifically, they were looking at using a beam saw and an edge bander, along with a glue storage unit – a highly technological solution and,
crucially, one that would no longer require the use of aluminium edging.
The forecast was compelling, showing cost benefits, as well as operational and aesthetic improvements. “The numbers were heavily stacked in favour of the machines,” Howard reflects. “And for our composite guys – a team of 31 – life was about to become a lot easier.” With this in mind, Howard and his team began evaluating potential suppliers for the necessary machinery.
Having previously owned a HOMAG CNC machine, Hurst Doors was already
“We’re turning doors around with far greater speed and accuracy, improving labour costs and the quality of the product – which our customers can attest to”
familiar with the brand’s reputation for quality and reliability. After considering a couple of other manufacturers, they decided to move forward with HOMAG due to their positive past experiences and the consistently high level of service they had received. “We’ve found that the service with HOMAG has always been top-notch. The quality of their product and level of service made the decision-making process easy,” Howard shared.
To finalise their decision, the team visited HOMAG’s Castle Donington site, where they were given a thorough demonstration of the SAWTEQ S-200, EDGETEQ S-300, and XES 200. They even brought along some of their own materials to test the machines firsthand. The demonstration impressed the team, and they were confident that HOMAG was the right choice for their needs. “Seeing the machines in action and testing them with our own materials was an eyeopener, to say the least. A whole new world of efficiency. We were sold.”
Installation and training
HOMAG provided three days of comprehensive training on the new
equipment, ensuring that the Hurst Doors team was fully equipped to operate the machines effectively.
“The training was excellent. HOMAG’s team made sure we were comfortable with the new equipment from day one,” Howard noted.
Operational benefits
The investment in the SAWTEQ S-200, EDGETEQ S-300, and XES 200 has been transformative for Hurst Doors. The machinery has significantly improved the efficiency and accuracy of their production process.
He continues, “We’ve massively improved our efficiency. We’re turning doors around with far greater speed and accuracy, improving labour costs and the quality of the product – which our customers can attest to. We’ve had great feedback regarding the improved appearance of our doors and the ease with which they can be fitted.
“HOMAG also provided software which allows us to take manufacturing data and input it directly into the machine. The technology handles the rest, again, making our lives a whole lot easier. The
“The new machinery has allowed them to navigate challenges posed by rising material costs and inefficient production methods, leading to significantly improved operational efficiency and overall business performance”
new process feels completely seamless, especially compared to how we were doing it before. We’ve often asked ourselves why we didn’t invest in this kit earlier!”
Closing thoughts
For Hurst Doors, the decision to partner with HOMAG has proven to be a highly beneficial one. The new machinery has allowed them to navigate challenges posed by rising material costs and inefficient production methods, leading to significantly improved operational efficiency and overall business performance.
Howard Wilson’s ongoing positive experience with HOMAG’s customer service and the high quality of their machines ensures that Hurst Doors will continue to rely on HOMAG as they move forward.
He concludes, “I personally deal with the HOMAG guys on a day-today basis, and have always found it to be a positive experience. It’s easy for me to recommend them to other manufacturers. The machines are transformative to a business, and the degree of customer service is second to none.”

“We can just enjoy the free heating without having to worry about how much it’s costing!”
A Leicestershire interiors manufacturer has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to get the money-saving benefits of waste disposal and heating.
Albert Henry Interiors manufactures traditional and sliding wardrobes, home offices and other freestanding furniture from its headquarters in Ibstock. The workshop could be a cold place to work in the winter months, with the large doors opening for loading and unloading and letting all the cold air in. Whilst the business could use gas heaters on the coldest days to try to warm the workshop, rising energy costs made the heaters very expensive to run.
The company was recommended by similar businesses to investigate the benefits of using a wood waste heater to reduce skip costs and generate free heating, and to speak to Wood Waste Technology for more information.
Managing Director of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft visited the premises to undertake a site survey, following which Albert Henry Interiors purchased a WT10 which was installed last year.
General manager at Albert Henry Interiors, Stuart Lansdowne says: “Wood Waste Technology has a great reputation for producing quality, reliable wood waste heaters, so we had no hesitation purchasing our heater from there. It’s a brilliant investment, as it means we now save a significant amount of money on waste disposal bills, and we can just enjoy the free heating without having to worry about how much it’s costing to warm the workshop!”
“Wood Waste Technology has a great reputation for producing quality, reliable wood waste heaters, so we had no hesitation purchasing our heater from there”
Having experienced the benefits of a wood waste heater for Albert Henry Interiors, the company also purchased two WT5 wood waste heaters for accompanying businesses on the site which are part of the same group.
“Much of our business comes from recommendation, so we’re delighted that we were mentioned to Albert Henry Interiors and that the business is benefitting from the investment,” says Kurt Cockroft from Wood Waste Technology. “We’re also grateful to the group for purchasing two other heaters for the two other businesses on-site, so their teams can experience the benefits of wood waste heaters too.”
Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from
small hand-fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares that it is proud to claim are “up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers”.
In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precisionengineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor of Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk www.putzmaus.co.uk

Wilsonart unifies bathroom proposition under Wetwall brand
Wilsonart UK, the global engineered surfaces specialist, has combined two of the leading names in the bathrooms category as it looks to invest in a unified brand committed to setting new standards in design, durability and functionality.
The tactical brand consolidation sees Wilsonart bring the strengths of its established Mermaid range of bathroom wall panels under the globally recognised Wetwall brand.
By leveraging the rich heritage and innovative spirit of both brands, Wilsonart will introduce a comprehensive range of Wetwall products structured in a ‘good, better, best’ tiered proposition to cater for the distinct needs and preferences of its extensive network of distributors.
Founded in 1991, Wetwall has remained committed to meticulous on-site design, manufacturing and testing of bathroom wall panels over three decades of continued growth and expansion from its headquarters in Perth, Scotland.
With four collections of bathroom wall panels comprising over 100 striking decors, the new Wetwall offering enables distributors a design and finish to appeal to any customer’s taste and budget. The designs span modern marbles and textured stones to designer decors and trend-led colours.
Every product across the four collections guarantees ease of installation and maintenance thanks to being completely grout-free. All Wetwall panels create a 100% waterproof system backed by an
industry-leading lifetime guarantee, when fitted in line with the relevant installation guidance and using Wilsonart Complete Adhesive and Sealant plus trims where required.

John Penny Joinery cuts costs by 13% with MEDITE MR PLUS
John Penny Joinery recently completed a bespoke bedroom suite in Edinburgh featuring a fitted wardrobe, set of drawers, table, and nightstand. They chose MEDITE MR PLUS, a premium white primed moisture-resistant MDF panel, to achieve a luxurious finish and long-lasting performance for the doors and drawers. MEDITE MR PLUS eliminates the need for primer, saving both time and money. The project took around two weeks — a reduction of 2.5 days from the typical span — and resulted in a 13% cost saving.
“Running a business means constantly looking for optimal solutions that provide superior end-product quality while ensuring cost-effective and efficient installation,” says John Penny, Director at John Penny Joinery.
“With MEDITE MR PLUS, I managed to save 13% of the project costs. These savings came from reduced material and labour costs. It took us a few days less than usual to complete the entire suite, keeping the client happy. Fewer distractions, higher quality than any other materials on the market, and faster installation — it is a win-win for all.”
MEDITE MR PLUS is a game-changer for joiners. Its primed surface saves time, cutting out the need for additional priming. An added benefit is the reduced need for sanding, allowing the end user to apply paint directly onto the panel. The matte low-gloss primer provides a perfect base for further paint application. The increased opacity of the primer reduces the need for multiple finishing coats, maintaining quality while saving on paint costs.
“I’ve been using MEDITE MR PLUS for the past nine months, and it has completely transformed my business”
For this project, 12 sheets of MEDITE MR PLUS (1220 x 2440mm, 18mm thick) were used for the doors and drawers. By selecting MEDITE MR PLUS, John ensured the furniture’s longevity and durability. He also used Tikkurila Intact 8, a water-based, fast-drying, durable furniture paint for indoor use that leaves a smooth and hard surface.
“I’ve been using MEDITE MR PLUS for the past nine months, and it has completely transformed my business,” adds John. “It’s my go-to material for all joinery projects because it’s easy to use, delivers stunning surface quality, and saves money. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for peace of mind and a flawless finish.”

Striebig & AL-KO: tackling Fermacell
The challenges of using Fermacell are well documented. The fire-resistant fibre gypsum board, which is often used as an alternative for plasterboard, blockwork and wet screed, offers home builders some seriously good credentials, but its extremely fragile DNA can lead to a more labour-intensive approach to manufacturing in a bid to avoid excessive material waste and the accumulation of workplace dust.
For Heywood Timber Engineering, these challenges were behind a compressive two-year search for the right cutting solution to tackle these problems headon. The outcome was a Striebig Compact vertical panel saw and AL-KO dust extraction unit from TM Machinery.
“We manufacture roof trusses, floor products and timber frames for our sister company, Heywood Homes and other third parties,” begins Domonic Farley, Operations, QHSE, Transport and Logistics Manager at Heywood Timber Engineering. “To do this, we cut a lot of 8x4 Fermacell board. At 52kg per board, they are extremely difficult to cut, and due to their brittle nature, they can easily be broken when handled or machined incorrectly. The compressed fibre structure also means they unleash an unworldly amount of fine dust when cut, which is difficult to extract.
“Our old vertical panel saw was struggling with this, and to try and compensate we ended up outsourcing our Fermacell strip work. We needed to combat these issues. A lot of saw manufacturers said their models could cut a wide range of materials, but Fermacell really is a whole different ball game. It was only once we’d seen the Striebig Compact 4164 vertical panel saw perform some cuts with a six-tooth blade and the AL-KO PU 160 P dust extraction unit running alongside it, that we knew we’d found what we’d spent two years looking for. It
“It was only once we’d seen the Striebig Compact 4164 vertical panel saw perform some cuts with a six-tooth blade and the AL-KO PU 160 P dust extraction unit running alongside it, that we knew we’d found what we’d spent two years looking for”
offered a clean, precise cut and made light work of fine dust.”
Following a very simple installation process, which saw the manufacturer merely needing to add additional threephase electric points into its 40,000 sqft factory, the saw and dust extraction duo were installed within a day. “It was as simple as it comes, and the AL-KO was plug and play. The whole process was done very quickly with very little disruption. We got TM’s experts to give our team some training so they could get a real understating of how the saw worked and how best to use it when cutting Fermacell and other materials. This helped us hit the ground running.”
Time and labour savings in the timber frame department were immediate.
“Before the Striebig, we’d have five people cutting, snapping and scoring Fermacell boards by hand. It wasn’t a productive method. An average job would take the team five days to cut. Now, with the introduction of the Striebig and AL-KO, the same job can be done in half a day by a single operator. Productivity has skyrocketed!”
Domonic continues, “Not only does this allow us to utilise our labour force more effectively and use them in other areas of the business, we can be less reliant on skilled labour to complete the job. In our business, everyone has a role to play, but if you get the right people in the right roles, you can save money and increase productivity. That you can be sure of.
“We’ve also seen a huge reduction in waste due to the way the saw cuts through the material, and that fine dust that would always cause so many problems in the factory has now been eradicated.” This is due in part to AL-KO’s extended filters, which increase surface area and reduce pressure on the filters - essential for working efficiently with fine dust. They are also made from an SMP-Tex surface coated filter material, which has been designed to prevent fine
dust penetrating the filters. In addition to this, its large integral air surge tank also ensures maximum filter cleaning with low demand on your compressed air supply.
“The automatic cleaning is also a great feature. It really helps us stay on top of maintenance,” says Domonic.
The Striebig and AL-KO partnership also offers the growing company flexibility going forward. “The house building sector is constantly looking at ways to make their homes more energy-efficient. This means we are always evolving and finding new ways to achieve even better results. That’s why we need the right machinery on our factory floor to keep up with new materials and techniques. The Striebig ticks this box and allows us to improve our manufacturing capabilities and work with a wider range of materials quickly and accurately. This in turn has allowed us to stop outsourcing pre-cut strips and saves us time and money during the production process.”
Domonic concludes, “This investment has resulted in us being able to not only complete existing jobs 80% quicker and create a cleaner environment for our workers. It’s also allowed us to streamline production and restructure our workforce to increase productivity. We couldn’t be happier and would definitely recommend TM Machinery to others.”

Is yield really the be-all and end-all when it comes to cutting optimisation?
Whether your business manufactures furniture from concept to sale – be that for kitchen, bedroom, bathroom or office – or supplies panel products such as kitchen and bedroom doors to the fitted furniture industry, the production process centres around producing a series of cut parts from stock material. Cutting optimisation systems have been integral in such production planning for many years, replacing the timeconsuming and often inaccurate manual calculation of cutting plans.
Whilst all optimisers available on the market are proud of their maximum yield/minimum wastage solutions, as SECANT is, should this really be all that is of concern when optimising production? Financial gains through savings in material can be rapidly lost through additional processing time at the saw. When cutting bar or beam, this could be due to inefficient use of the full cutting capacity of the saw or through multiple changes of part length within the same pattern, whilst for panel and sheet time, it can be lost through overly complicated patterns containing multiple turns and recuts.
The highest yields and the most efficient saw usage can generally be achieved by allowing an optimiser to freely combine any of the piece sizes in the cutting list. However, such patterns may result in an unacceptable amount of work in progress where, at any time, a large number of
“With the company’s state-of-the-art cutting optimiser, you have the capability to generate solutions tailored to balance material yield against production time”
orders are partially complete. SECANT can constrain the result so that pieces are produced broadly in line with a production schedule, or to meet the production requirements downstream of the saw.
With the company’s state-of-the-art cutting optimiser, you have the capability to generate solutions tailored to balance material yield against production time. This balance may vary depending on the cost of material being cut, the lead time for the product, or the capacity of the factory at any time. SECANT Enterprise can also display the user a list of solutions where this balance is varied, allowing the user to choose for themselves the most appropriate cutting plan for the current requirements of the business.
With SECANT, you can rest assured that you’ll be working at maximum capacity, saving both time and money.

Holz-Her’s sprint – a game changer in edgebanding
Working with retail giants like Tesco, KFC and The Fragrance Shop, specialist architectural joinery company, Adams Joinery Ltd, knows all too well the importance of producing consistent, high-quality edging. When their old edgebander’s performance started to impact production, the Londonbased joinery invested in a Sprint 1329 edgebander from Holz-Her UK to increase efficiencies throughout the edging process.
“The right machine in any workshop should be a help and not a hindrance to your production,” begins Alex Adkinss, Senior Production Manager at Adam’s Joinery. “This simply wasn’t the case with our old edgebander. We knew we needed more control over our edging. This meant being able to quickly and easily change
“The Sprint has given us the confidence to complete jobs to a much higher standard and has reduced production times”
glue colours when required, reduce the amount of manual set-up involved and eradicate the hand finishing of panels once they’d been edged.”
It was clear from the off that Holz-Her’s Sprint offered Alex and the team the complete package, thanks to its sturdy German build quality and wealth of automated features designed to simplify operation and guarantee repeatable, near invisible glue lines.
“We could see how it’s multi-function milling, fa.s.t (fast setting technology) and integrated finishing units could de-skill the operation for us, whilst its ability to apply veneer lippings, melamine, HPL, real wood coil and up to 15mm thick solid wood onto work pieces up to 60mm thick offered us the flexibility we were after.
“Then there was the Glu Jet system it came with,” adds Alex adds. “We’d read about its insanely quick heat-up times, its ability to switch between EVA and PUR and easy cleaning, but it all sounded a bit too good to be true. How wrong were we? When we saw the machine in action, we were immediately sold. No other manufacturer could offer anything like it.
We knew it would be a game-changer for our business, and we were right.
“Due to the bespoke nature of our work, we can easily perform 20 different setups on the machine in a week, which, on our old edgebander, was difficult to say the least. Everything needed to be set by hand – requiring a certain level of skill and patience – and changing glue colours was one of the most painful experiences of them all,” admits Alex.
“With the Glu Jet, it takes just five
minutes to change from one glue colour to another and only requires a 300g cartridge to complete the process. It was taking us three hours to change the glue on our old edgebander and 5kg of slugs to guarantee a good job,” explains Alex.
“Because the old machine would be out of action for so long, we’d have to make the decision to swap the glue the night before and be in a position to halt work on the machine. It was our biggest headache. If we didn’t do it, we’d risk producing poor-quality edging and an ugly glue line. Now, we simply use the automatic cleaning function to purge the machine until the solution runs clear. This saves us three hours of downtime, as well as wasted labour and a potential production backlog.”
Then there are the automatic set-up functions. “Each job we work on may require a different panel type or lipping thickness, but the set-up on the Sprint is exactly the same. If you’re running a job and you’ve got 12mm, 25mm and 60mm thick workpieces, you can click a button and the machine will automatically change its settings to accommodate the different sizes in seconds, without you having to stop and re-set the machine. Plus, thanks to its smart premilling features, it compensates for any discrepancies on the board and allows you to make fine adjustments between 0.1–0.01mm yourself.”
The finishing units and automated anti-static spray on the Sprint have also eradicated hand finishing and, thanks to the machine’s buffers, it works effectively on even the most delicate veneers. “As well as buffers, scraper and four different cutter types, we opted for spray units on the front and back to avoid any additional finishing, especially on high gloss melamine. Not having to
scrape off excess glue from every panel saves us two to three minutes per board, which soon adds up when you’re running thousands of pieces through it. It also means the risk of human error – like digging a chisel in too deeply and marking the panel – is no longer an issue. No glue spills on the face, no poorly cut edge, just a perfectly clean, flat board.”
On top of this, the Sprint also aids the operator in other ways. “It tells you how much glue you have left and how much edging you’ve used. It takes the guesswork out of the process and doesn’t lead to any downtime whatsoever. This is particularly handy when working on larger shopfitting projects where we might require 1,000m of edging at a time as you don’t need to stop the machine to check.”
Alex continues, “Heat-up times have also gone from anywhere between 30 minutes and one hour, to just five minutes. This not only saves on energy but production time, too. It also means we can be more reactive if an unplanned board needs to be run through. Now we can just turn it on and go. This level of flexibility cannot be underestimated in any joinery business.”
When it comes to labour, there is also no longer a reliance on skilled operators. “We had two primary operators on the old edgebander because of the level of skill required to use it. Now, we have eight people that can use the Sprint easily. The difference is night and day and, if somebody retires or leaves, it doesn’t leave us in a vulnerable position to find an experienced replacement.” Alex adds, “Following the visual prompts on the screen and operating the machine really is child’s play.”
Following a smooth installation process and three days of training on the machine, the edgebander has now been in use for 12 months. “I started by
“On the face of it, it’s not a cheap machine, but its build quality, speed, accuracy, and simple set-up will pay us back over and over again”
saying this machine was a game-changer and it has been. The Sprint has given us the confidence to complete jobs to a much higher standard and has reduced production times,” says Alex.
“On the face of it, it’s not a cheap machine, but its build quality, speed, accuracy, and simple set-up will pay us back over and over again. All these areas positively impact our labour and material costs, as well as the ability to future-proof our business. These areas cannot get overlooked.”
Alex continues, “Some machinery manufacturers try and sell you a machine with this idea that it can do everything, but inevitably, you don’t end up using most of the features on it. It’s safe to say we use everything on the Sprint, and everything it does, it does well. The ongoing service with Holz-Her has also been the best I’ve experienced from a machinery manufacturer, and their troubleshooting has been exceptional. The Sprint is really straightforward, but if I need help or support, I can WhatsApp one of the edgebanding experts in Abingdon, and within five minutes, he’s telling me what I need to do to resolve the problem. That’s unheard of in this industry. It’s actions like this that give us resounding confidence in Holz-Her and peace of mind in both the edgebander and the aftercare going forward.”

ATEMAG optimises its flush trimming aggregate
ATEMAG, a leading supplier of CNC aggregates for the woodworking industry, presents a technical enhancement of its proven flush trimming aggregate. Thanks to an innovative design and the use of new technologies, the CNC aggregate can now be offered at a lower cost without sacrificing quality and performance.
Innovation in edge processing
The flush trimming aggregate is primarily used in the edge finishing of panel materials. Here, protrusions of the glued edges are removed, and a radius or chamfer is milled flush at the same time, resulting in a precise and even edge. This technique, known as flush milling of edges, is used for kitchen worktops or furniture elements, for example. Solid
“The improved flush trimming aggregate not only offers greater efficiency and precision, but also an attractive cost structure”
wood steps are also processed flush with the floating aggregate in staircase production.
Thanks to the individual probing technology of the aggregate, edges can be probed and processed simultaneously and separately (from above and below). Both sides of the workpiece panel are copied individually and compensate for unevenness and thickness variations. The processing time is also considerably reduced by processing on both sides.
Cost efficiency and flexibility
By reducing the number of components and optimising the design, ATEMAG has succeeded in making the flush milling aggregate more cost-effective. The savings are passed on directly to the customer, making the aggregate available at a more attractive price. Despite the
cost reduction, the high quality and performance of the aggregate remain unchanged.
The standard version of the aggregate is equipped with a vertical feeler. An optional horizontal scanning of the edge is also available, which enables a probing range of ±2 mm. This flexibility allows an even greater variety of applications in different areas of woodworking.
With this technical innovation, ATEMAG is once again setting new standards in the woodworking industry. The improved flush trimming aggregate not only offers greater efficiency and precision, but also an attractive cost structure. Woodworking companies thus benefit from an advanced technology that both reduces production costs and increases the quality of the end products.

Transforming limited space into a storage marvel – the Blum sink cabinet
Sink cabinets are not exactly known for providing ample storage capacity, but only in the way Blum can, it has come up with a solution – a sink cabinet that’s a storage space marvel.
The ingenious thinking even includes the spaces down each side of the sink’s undermounting, making it an ideal solution to feature in the ‘all you need is space’ campaign being run by Hill’s Panel Products (HPP) and its trading partner Blum.
Each month, the two market-leading companies are highlighting products that improve on workspace and workflow, space and storage, and convenience.
The Blum Sink Cabinet’s U-shaped pull-
out puts the space to the left and right of the sink to the best possible use. It’s ideal for clearing away sponges, washing-up liquid and dishwasher tablets. (This pullout is recommended for cabinet widths of 900mm or more.)
Below this, practical inner dividing systems such as Ambia-Line and OrgaLine ensure that cleaning products are held securely, while full extension makes it easy to throw away waste, and empty and clean waste bins if that’s the configuration the customer has opted for.
Look – no hands!
It’s often the case that hands are full, wet or dirty when a consumer wants to open the sink unit.
This is where the Servo-Drive electrical opening support system comes in. All they have to do is simply touch the front with their knee, hip or toe, and the pull-out opens by itself.
Servo-Drive is also available as an individual solution – Servo-Drive Uno.
Easy. Fast. Digital
There’s a fast and easy way to configure the Sink Cabinet. Selecting the right
fittings solution has never been easier thanks to the Product Configurator by Blum. Parts lists can be ordered directly from HPP, and manufacturing information is available in PDF, CAD or CAM format whenever you need it. Easy. Fast. Digital. And the easy assembly app makes assembling and installing Blum products easy. Created to be a helpful reference tool, this app uses instruction sheets and videos to show step-by-step directions for every product.
HPP – official Blum partner
HPP, which has its manufacturing and supply headquarters in Oldham, Lancashire, and a trade counter in Sheffield, Yorkshire, has been trading with Blum throughout its 33-year history.
The long-standing association with the market-leading Austria-based business was cemented when HPP, which makes and supplies board, doors, fitting and accessories for the fitted furniture industry, became an official Blum brand partner – one of only four in the UK. Most Blum products are available off the shelf for next-day delivery across the UK. www.hpponline.co.uk/cat/860/blum

Innovative material handling solutions from Combilift
Innovation is in Combilift’s DNA. The company invests 7% of its revenue in research and development, with about 98% of it focused on the development of new electric material-handling solutions. In 2023, Combilift launched five new products to mark its 25 years in business: the Combi-Cube, the Combi-CB70E, the Combi-AGT, the Combi-LC Blade, and the Combi-Connect. The company has already introduced two more innovations in 2024: the Combi-SafeLift and the Combi-CLL (Log Loader).
Within the market for industrial trucks, two of Combilift’s latest innovations are the Combi-Cube and the Combi-CB70E, both fully electric and featuring the new Combi-Eco green colour. These models prioritise driver comfort and reduce strain by including Combilift’s newly developed Auto Swivel Seat – patent pending – as a standard option.
The Combi-CB70E, with a lifting capacity of 7t, is the shortest counterbalance truck on the market of its capacity and offers multidirectional ability, enabling the versatile space-saving handling of both long and bulky loads. The Combi-Cube, with a load capacity of up to 3t, features Combilift’s unique Dynamic 360 Steering
“The integration of software into machinery is becoming more popular, and Combi Connect is a cutting-edge telematics software that enhances efficiency and productivity”
as an optional feature, making it the most maneuverable counterbalance forklift available.
Sustainability is a top priority for every company, and Combilift has shown its commitment to making material-handling operations more environmentally friendly through its investments and efforts to introduce new electric equipment, such as those mentioned above. In addition, the advancement of renewable energies is leading to greater demand for handling larger components. The Combi-LC Blade, developed in collaboration with Siemens Gamesa, was specifically designed to meet the load-handling requirements of largescale offshore wind manufacturers. This equipment is capable of transporting wind turbine blades and towers, some as long as 115m and weighing around 70t.
The integration of software into machinery is becoming more popular, and Combi Connect is a cutting-edge telematics software that enhances efficiency and productivity. It is customised to meet the specific needs of each customer, revolutionising how you operate and manage your fleet.
Ensuring safe forklift operations is a priority for Combilift. Forklift operators must be aware of the type of load they are handling, its load centre and overall weight, as well as the height it needs to be lifted. Not being knowledgeable about these can lead to potentially exceeding the forkliftrated capacity, risking overloading, which can place operators and everyone working around them at risk.
Since the groundbreaking C4000 model was first designed in 1998, Combilift has developed a wide array of innovative material handling solutions. These advancements serve as a testament to Combilift’s commitment to continuing its Lifting Innovation for many years to come. www.combilift.com

“Perfect Matt” finish complements Ostermann’s portfolio of matt edgings
Edging specialist Ostermann has just launched a new surface finish for extremely matt furniture edgings. Processors can now choose from three qualities – Super Matt, Excellent Matt and the newly added Perfect Matt finish. Board suppliers present an increasing number of matt surfaces in their collections. You will soon establish, however, that there are different types of matt. If you place the boards of different manufacturers next to each other, it becomes clear that not only the diversity of colours and decors but also different versions of matt must be considered. To present furniture makers with as much choice as possible to find the best solution for the edging, Ostermann has now extended its portfolio of surface finishes. In addition to the existing “Super Matt” and “Excellent Matt” versions, “Perfect Matt” now presents a new option that is even more pleasant to the touch. 17 plain colours are already available with a finish in the new matt quality. Find all new edgings by typing in the
search term “#Highlights05” on the Ostermann website www.ostermann. eu. They are available from stock in 1mm thickness and many widths. All Ostermann ABS edgings can be cut to any required width up to 100mm on request. Processors working with zero bondline machines can also get their edgings with a functional layer specially made to match the respective technology.
New finish: Perfect Matt
The new edgings feature a soft and warm matt finish with a uniquely even touch and feel. The surface is non-porous and, therefore, easy to clean. High scratch resistance and anti-fingerprint properties are obligatory with this variant. Colours range from various shades of white and grey to selected plain colours such as taupe, burgundy, black, green, and blue.
Classic finish: Excellent Matt
Edgings with an Excellent Matt finish have a dull matt, coarse surface and feature anti-fingerprint properties. They
are highly scratch-resistant, and the range of colours is even bigger. These come in different thicknesses with 1 and 2mm available.
Standard Finish: Super Matt
Super matt edgings have a smooth matt standard surface. They are available from Ostermann in a wide range of colours and different thicknesses. Unlike the previously mentioned variants, this one does not have anti-fingerprint properties, which is why the Ostermann experts recommend the super matt surface finish mainly for less exposed elements, such as furniture parts that are rarely touched or come into contact with grease.
Tip: the right cleaner
The new REDOCOL greenline Finish Cleaner Perfect Matt was specially developed for extremely matt surfaces and effectively removes fingerprints or spots that inevitably occur when installing furniture without leaving streaks. www.ostermann.eu

SCM Windorflex – the machining cell for producing windows and doors
Nowadays, design and eco-sustainability are the two main trends defining wooden window production. The design dictates windows’ finish quality and shape, while eco-sustainability mainly involves the way in which they are manufactured.
As concerns the execution of wooden windows, the level of perceived finish quality is steadily growing. Therefore, in order to optimise production rates and flexibility, it is essential to pay significant attention to the machine’s constructive features.
Being a technology partner of the world’s leading window and door manufacturers for 70 years gives SCM the opportunity to continuously listen to customers’ most detailed requirements and allows the company to constantly come up with advanced responses.
Based on these prerogatives, SCM designed Windorflex, the machining cell for the production of windows and doors. Windorflex has a fixed gantry structure that enables high machining speeds
whilst ensuring the best accuracy.
The configurability of the machining units with four- and five-axis electrospindles allows for performing all the necessary operations for the production of complete windows, regardless of the type. The alternate use of the two routing units reduces the cycle time: while one unit is working, the other performs the tool change in masked time.
The innovative automatic worktable, available in a single or double version, is equipped with dedicated clamps for the constant holding of the work-pieces. It is possible to process from one to four
work-pieces in sequence. The worktable modularity allows managing three workpiece lengths: 3500, 4500, and 6000mm.
The work-piece repositioning, from the internal side machining to the external one, is direct between the clamps, without needing additional devices, to ensure excellent finish quality.
Another advantage is the automatic work-pieces loading/unloading systems that enable the machine to work autonomously, without the continuous input of the operator. These systems are available in two solutions: with a loading/unloading bench or with an anthropomorphous robot that picks up the rough elements and unloads the finished work-pieces on special trolleys.
Moreover, depending on the customer’s needs, the machine can be fitted with two handling devices for the workpieces loading, with the aim to increase performance and productivity, and the front loading bench, to reduce the longitudinal footprint.
The exclusive Maestro active windoor software, specifically developed for the control and the programming of Windorflex, is capable of meeting any demands related to windows and doors production thanks also to Maestro connect, the SCM IoT system. www.scmgroup.com

Titus launches space-efficient slimline drawer range
Cabinet hardware expert, Titus, has launched a second-generation range of its popular Tekform double-wall drawers. The new slimline versions feature a sleek and visually appealing design, and have 14mm side panels that maximise efficient utilisation of drawer space. They also incorporate the precisionengineered Titus hydraulic dampers to ensure a reliable and consistent soft closing action, combined with low pullout force.
Tekform slimline drawers are available in three heights – 70, 145 and 182mm – and can be supplied in a range of visually appealing finishes that ideally complement contemporary furniture designs. A further key benefit is that they use the same drilling pattern for runners as their predecessors, which facilitates mounting in existing products and designs.
Drawers are fast and easy to assemble, thanks to the EasyFix locking system used for the front-panel connector, which requires only hand insertion and a quarter of a turn with a screwdriver to lock the panel securely in place. Reliable life-long ‘ConfidentClose’ soft closing is assured by the use of the renowned TITUS singledirection precision-engineered hydraulic
dampers, which smoothly slow down the linear movement of the drawer as it reaches the closed position but offers minimal resistance to movement when the drawer is being opened.
Installation of the drawers within the cabinet is fast and straightforward. Extended tolerances in cabinet construction can be accommodated without compromising accurate alignment, smooth and silent operation and excellent stability in the open position. In addition, variations of up to ± 1mm in bottom panel width size are acceptable. www.cabinet.titusplus.com

Lamello to exhibit at the North Of England Woodworking Show
This November, Lamello UK will be exhibiting at the North of England Woodworking Show in Harrogate. The event, which will take place from Friday 15th to Sunday 17th November 2024, will offer visitors an opportunity to get hands-on with over 80 brands and watch seminars and demonstrations in five theatres in the Yorkshire Event Centre.
Well attended by smaller workshops and hobbyists, the three-day event lends itself to demonstrations on Lamello’s Classic X original biscuit joiner, but unlike other models on the market, the Classic X is much more than a biscuit joiner. Suitable for use with a wide range of connectors – including Lamello’s C10, C20, K20, E20L and E20H – the Classic X provides a complete solution for those looking for a highly efficient, simple and accurate joining system for panels. Plus, its multifunctional stop square allows for perfect mitres by applying on the exterior surface and stabilises the machine in vertical position.
What’s more, the Classic X works effectively with Lamello’s latest detachable furniture connector, the Clamex S-20. Designed to work with a universal 4mm cut, it’s versatile and quick to use. Mitre joints are now possible on materials as thin as 14mm thick, and butt joints with installation into the edges can measure as little as 8mm thick. The Clamex S-20 can also be used for angle connections from 30º - 180º, and to make life even simpler, the system comes with its own drilling jig for precise positioning.
Adding to the fixings flexibility, the Clamex S-20 isn’t limited for use on a specific biscuit joiner. Instead, it can be used on any biscuit joining machine with a 4mm blade, making it an affordable and adaptable option for those working on-site without an existing Lamello joiner or hobbyists and DIY enthusiasts that are yet to invest in Lamello’s P-System but still want a strong and accurate solution to creating connections at all angles without the need for adhesives.
“The North of England Woodworking Show isn’t the longest-running woodworking event in the country for no reason,” says Shaye Chatfield, Lamello Area Sales Manager International for Lamello in the UK and Ireland. “It offers
smaller furniture makers and hobbyists that may not get an opportunity to attend larger shows in and around Europe a chance to see the products that are relatable to them. For Lamello UK, it offers us an opportunity to reach out to a different demographic and present the ease and affordability of Lamello’s innovative joining solutions.
“Plus, with live demonstrations taking place on our award-winning P-System, drilling system and Lamello system, visitors will be able to see just how easy it is to incorporate Lamello’s solutions into their woodworking practises.”

Makita launches new 40VMax XGT orbit sanders
Makita has added six new orbit sanders to its 40VMax XGT range. Due to an innovative cable connection to the battery, the new cordless sanders offer superior ease of use and manoeuvrability, as well as delivering the excellent levels of performance and runtimes that professionals demand.
The powerful additions to the range provide an ideal alternative to pneumatic sanders without the increased maintenance or the time-consuming management of the compressor. The efficient brushless motor utilised by the new range of sanders reduces wasted energy to help deliver maximum power and extended runtimes from each battery charge. The six XGT sanders all deliver between 6,000 and 10,000 orbits per minute, with the variable speed control operated from a conveniently placed dial on the tool’s side.
The BO001CG and BO002CG are 5mm random orbit sanders with 125mm and 150mm sanding disc diameters, respectively, while the 125mm BO003CG and 150mm BO004CG have 3mm random sanding orbits. The BO005CG and BO006CG have 80 x 130mm square and 100 x 150mm triangular sanding pads respectively, with a 3mm sanding orbit.
One of the key advantages of these sanders is the battery is not mounted directly on the tool. Instead, the power is supplied from the battery via a connector and cable. The 1.6 metre cable supplied as standard with the sanders allows the battery to be easily clipped to the user’s belt or placed in a convenient location nearby. There is also the option of a five-metre cable to provide even greater flexibility.
“The new 40VMax XGT sanders offer a simpler-to-use alternative to pneumatic sanders that still provides the performance required for many of the toughest sanding tasks,” says Kevin Brannigan, marketing manager at Makita.
“The innovative battery connection makes these sanders more manoeuvrable and comfortable to operate, while the AWS technology helps ensure a safer working environment.”

A “Nice” Installation!
Chris Franklin, MD at Ranheat Engineering Ltd – a leading UK manufacturer of wood combustion equipment – continues his series of articles exclusively for Furniture and Joinery Production.
In last month’s edition, Chris looked at how to maximise wood-waste utilisation. One of the methods was using woodwaste for kilning of timber. This month, he presents a case study using wood-waste to kiln dry timber prior to treatment with preservatives, for a specialist fencing supplier.
M W Nice Ltd, a manufacturer and re-seller of a wide range of fencing products based near Bury St. Edmunds, have invested in a kiln supplied by Kilning specialists Kiln Services Ltd. This is powered by a Ranheat wood burning installation.
When trees are harvested, they have a high moisture content. The traditional drying method is air drying, but this can take months. The alternative, quick method is to use a kiln.
In recent years, the fencing sector has become an increasingly important market. Many companies have installed kilns to obtain the correct penetration and chemical loading by drying down to fibre saturation point prior to treatment.
When drying species that are classed as “resistant to treatment”, such as Spruce, care should be taken not to dry below the fibre saturation point. A final moisture of 28 – 30% usually provides the best results.
Drying programs should be modified to ensure the maximum temperature does not exceed 65 degrees centigrade and relative humidity is no lower than 55%. Although drying times will be extended, modifying the programs in this way prevents the outer layers from drying too quickly, causing a resistance to penetration and ensuring that the preservative impregnation standards of BS8417:2011 are met. This is of particular
importance where the minimum service life of 15 years defined in the Standard is required for components destined for Class 4 / Ground Contact use.
There is, of course, a cost in removing a proportion of the moisture prior to treatment, but this is minimal when compared with the replacement of a failed product, which in turn often means customers have a lack of confidence in timber and turn to other less sustainable materials.
John recommended Ranheat Engineering Ltd. for the wood-burning system as they have successfully worked together for over 40 years in the UK and Africa on kilning projects.
Not all wood-burning boilers are suitable for use with kilns as kilns have a sudden high demand for energy on start up and the boiler system needs a large water content to deal with this “surge”. As the kilning cycle progresses, the demand for heat falls off, so a good turn down ratio is also needed to cope with this fluctuation in heat demand.
Traditionally, a powerful heat exchanger with an oil-fired boiler would be used, but with the move away from conventional fuels, enter the wood-waste burning boiler.
There is a wide range of wood-waste as an off-shoot of manufacturing wooden fencing products. This was to be used as the fuel for the boiler. The wood fuel needs to be in the form of woodchips. As the manufacturing site for the fencing and kilning was remote, a tractor-mounted chipper was decided on.
“John recommended Ranheat
Engineering
Ltd. for the wood-burning system as they have successfully worked together for over 40 years in the UK and Africa on kilning projects”
Will Nice goes on to say, “We had a lot of help from Ranheat with obtaining local authority permits and planning consents, some of which we were not aware that we needed. Chris pointed out that the woodworking operation needed a local authority permit as we will be processing more than 1,000m3 per year of wood under guidance note PGN 602. As part of this permit, we added our wood combustion process, which came under a separate guidance note PG5/1 (21).
“Chris dealt directly with the local Environmental Health Officer who was interpreting the guidance incorrectly. Without Ranheat’s help, we might have
had unnecessary conditions placed on our permit and incurred extra costs as they were asking for an annual test on the boiler, which is not what the guidance note said. Ranheat’s experience with dealing with local authorities was invaluable and is part of the service they provide, so there was no need to employ expensive consultants.”
